======= Conference room one, SB 234

Shane listened to all the reports without any questions or
remarks. When the last report ended, Shane looked at all the
assembled officers and said: "Thank you ladies and
gentleman. I arrived just a few hours ago, so I will
definitely need more time to settle down and get an
impression of the picture. I will talk with every single of
you some later and we shall go over each department in more
detail. Since that, please consult all daily operations with
Colonel DuPont. He's both Task Force Deputy CO and
Unity's XO and he has my full trust.

He waited for a moment before adding: "For the time being,
we have three priorities. The top one is Security. We are @
war and this station is a vital point of operation for both
Starfleet and SSF and so a high level target for our enemy.
Turning to Chisulo, Shane said: "Captain, I want you to
prioritize what tactical systems will suit us best and began
with the installations immediately. Engineering will help
you with this."

Slightly sighing, Shane went on : "With the current
condition of Commander Rodgers, I need someone else to take
over Engineering till we find a permanent replacement.
Colonel DuPont, you are hereby put in charge of Unity's
Engineering. Please coordinate with Captain Chisulo all
necessary."

Other point is internal security. Not only the case of
Commander Rodgers, but a dozen more security reports on my
desk confirm that internal security is a big issue on this
station. I asked a friend of mine … and a skilled security
officer to take over the role of Task Force Expeditionary
Force Commander as well as Unity's Chief Security officer.
It's Marine Captain Joeleco 283 … some of you know him
from the time he served on the Chimera. He will take care of
internal security, but he will need support from tactical
and intel, so Captain and Commander …" Shane looked at
Chisulo and Harbright, "please help him as much as
possible."

Looking at Rangi, Shane said: "Our second priority is
medical. With the ongoing war, there will be many
causalities and we are the best and only spot for large
numbers of patients to be treated. I am glad that our
infirmary is almost full functional. Commander Summers, you
have my authority to use every single bit of resources not
needed by tactical and security for your needs."

Looking away from Rangi, Shane looked at Terek and went on:
"Our third priority is resources. I hoped that SSF will
provide us with whatever resources we shall need, but cause
of the war, resources are valuable and we wont get as many
of them as needed. Therefore … we need to find own
resources. Commander Terek, you're task is it to search
this system for suitable resources. There is a small colony
in the polar region on Aeran III … go there, talk with the
miners and if possible, make them to double their
production. Old sensor logs of this system suspect one or
two sources of dilithium … maybe in the asteroid belt.
Take the Qashqai and search for that dilithium"

"As far Fleet operation in this sector, I have no comments
so far, I need to learn far more about the situation before
I issue any orders. That means that you, Captain Chisulo
please continue doing what you do".

"The same applies to Intel. Commander Harbright, go on
with your own agenda … you know what we need most …
information about enemy movement along our borders.
Nonetheless it is important to know what other powers think
about this war and if they do … we need to know what side
they will aid. Preferably … before someone attacks us
unexpected. The Erassians are powerful in Intel … and
since we have an MDP now … squeeze as much as possible
from their sources. Without actual Intel, we are like
blind."

"if there are no questions …" Shane paused,
"you're dismissed. If anyone want to talk to me in
private, stay here …"

OCC:<happens before Harbright evaluation>

=/\= SB 234  - A Small Cafe =/\=
Between her work on the evaluations and celebrating her engagement and one small shopping trip, Athena hadn't gotten the chance to catch up with Lieutenant Jardan, yet.  {Well, at least he's making quick progress} she thought as she sat at the cafe sipping at her chocolate.  The lieutenant's schedule never seem to be free when her was either, but she sincerely hoped he received her invitation and would arrive soon.

Shortly after his meeting with Capt. Rojac, Tommy left the security office. He had received the invitation to lunch with Athena, and left the last of the details to Johnson.  He walked to the cafe and entered. He spotted Athena, went over and sat down." Hello Athena." Tommy smiled.

"Hi, I was afraid you'd be tied up again or I'd be called away," she smiled as he sat down.  She took a swallow of her hot chocolate and motioned to the waiter.

"Actually, I was in a meeting with Captain Rojac.  I'm trying to put together the new Chimera's security crew. It has been definitely hectic." Tommy looked at his menu.

When the waiter she approached, she looked up and asked, "Could I, please, get a Grilled chicken sandwich?"  The waiter nodded and looked at Tom.

Tommy looked at the waiter." I'll get the salmon and a glass of the ale.The older the better." The waiter wrote the order down and walked to the kitchen. Tommy turned back to Athena," Well, you sure grew into a pretty woman. I was sorry to hear about your grandmother. What happened? I thought she was going to be OK?"

"Well, I'm sure if you could ask her she'd tell to I was the death of her, but after she managed to get me pushed through to work with some of the diplomats... she just sort of seemed to slow down."  She reached across the table and place her hand on his arm that was resting there before finishing, "She died of natural causes ... old age .... and it was peaceful.

"Well, I am glad she got to live a few more years. The doctors said it would be an iffy chance of surviving the wound. I am also glad that she was able to raise you. After your parents..." Tommy let his words drift off.

"Do you know what I remember most about you," she asked with a small smile.

Tommy smiled back ion return." Why don't you tell me."

"When you rolled me over in the mud with your hand over your my mouth until those people dressed in gray went away."  A curious furrow passed over the waiters face as he set down their order.  He walked away with a small nod as the conversation continued.

"To tell the truth, I remember you most as a carefree, very spirited child, who just wanted to grow up and save the universe from the evil clutches of the 'ugly gray guys', I believe you called them." Tommy laughed at the memory.

"Well, weren't they," she chuckled.  She took a bite of her sandwich and chewed while Tommy took a bite of his.  "You know I would have been in a lot more trouble if you hadn't kept stepping in and telling my grandmother that you encouraged my behavior," she stated and then added to jog his memory, "such as being covered in mud.... and running off when she got hurt."

"I was trying to teach you to be safe.Your grandmother did not see it that way. But it worked. Of that I am glad."

"I don't think she ever realized that I had walked off to find her help because I was worried," Athena shrugged and took a drink of her hot chocolate.

Tommy smiled," I'm not surprised, with it being a long time ago. And your age at the time. You knew. You did OK. And the help arrived just in time." Tommy frowned a little, remembering what happened afterwards.

"Tommy... is it still okay if I call you Tommy," she asked.

"Of course it's OK." Tommy turned away little," Your family used to call me that. They were the first, you know. I just wish.."

Athena reached across the table with her left hand, touching his arm.  When his gaze met her's she said, "Don't let whatever happened then rule your life... I know that's hard to hear from some who was around 5 at the time but... just don't let it hang around forever.."

"I try not to..but I should never have involved your family. Especially with a small child involved." Tommy frowned again,' But they were so eager to help.."

"My parents worked as spies before I was born which is why my grandmother was raising me .... and trust me when I say grandmother wouldn't have offered if she didn't think it was important," she responded with a comforting smile.

Tommy nodded. It had been important work. " The work she did, in the end, did save a lot of lives. And it looks like she gave you something to work for. And, congrats on the engagement." Tommy took a drink and then asked," have you decided on who is giving you away?" Left unspoken was the thought { And why him? Are you sure he is the one?}

At the mention of her engagement, Athena's smile turned to one of delight.  "I wish.... no, I haven't decided."  At the expression that was on his face she asked, "Is something wrong?"

Tommy smiled," No, well I wish your grandmother could see the look on your face. I was thinking..I would love to be the one to give you away. As your friend. Please let me. " {Yep. He is the one. Look at her. She is so happy.}

Thinking about how Vik felt about some of the others she could offer the giving of the bride away to {Maybe an old friend would be best.}  "I'll count on you for it," she decided in the next moment.

Tommy smiled even deeper. "Well then, set a date! I must be off to check with my crew." Tommy waited for Athena to stand up. " I am really happy for you. And jealous of the General. Remember, I will always be here to talk to and to be there for you." Tommy turned to leave. As he did so, he tried something he hadn't done since Betazed, trying to send Athena a salute using his mind{{Little General}} Tommy smiled and started whistling as he left.

She smiled thinking {I would have thought he would have forgotten that one... lets hope he has forgotten the other one.}

Terek Weranis <annemion@seznam.cz> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

========== / CSciO's Office \ ==========

Now that the overhauling had been completed Terek finally got a
permanent office. It was not too big. Just the right size, to fit in a
standard issue work desk, large wall screen, personal computer and close
to the viewport a two opposingly faced sofas with the sidetables. He was
just sitting on one of them admiring the scenery. This was the reason
he asked if he could be assigned this office. It was on the outter rim
of the main Unity's core and right in the spot, where the hull was
changing its curvature so the viewport was extralarge covering whole
side wall and even [art of the ceiling. The main docking ring wasn't
far but not blocking the view so he could watch over the inbound and
outbound traffict, while figurring out the great mysteries of
science.... well at least those that still left in this century.

Mostly when he sat and watched, he however thought about Alex trying to
overcome her death. Now was one of those moments. He just sat there,
watching a photo of her in a digital frame having a steaming mug of
dimbula petiagalla on the sidetable. Suddenly he was brought back from
memmories by a chime.

"Yes, come in." he answered and put down the picture. The door opened
and let in a friendli figure.
"Jerom. Hello, good to see you."

Since he arrived on the station he has only seen his half-bajoran friend
only a few times. Jerom was a slightly taller than himself, with short
red hair and beard, dark eyes and friendly smile. He was half bajoran
after his mother, but he only got the dark eyes from her and bit
wrinkled nose, but the rest of the genetic markers came from his father
and that sort of made him center of attention when he arrived somewhere.
It was unusual to see a person who resembled a Bajjoran but with flaming
red hair that in fact no Bajoran has ever had.

"Hi Weranis, sorry to bother you this late, but we have a little problem
in the rad lab."

Terek sighed, this was the only pain in the side he has got left in the
department. Everything else was at the moment fine, but it seemed they
can't get the radiation lab to get working. It was almost like back on
the Chimera.

"Oh Prophets, this radiation lab issue is like a curse. Back on Chimera
it were those high yield particle generators we couldn't get and now not
only the radiation shields aren't working properly."

"Yeah, sorry to disappoint you mate, but there's another bug."

"Come on, you do this on purpose."

Jerom shook his head with appologetic look. His friend really helped him
to move over Alex in those last few months and he was really grateful.
He's been a good friend of his since one Halloween party way back on the
Chimera-A.
"You know I'm not. The Lab is simply remodeled cargo bay and its EPS
grid is a bit weaker than it would normaly be. But still well withing
the requirements. I'm not sure why this is happening, but no worries,
we'll figure it out."

"All right, let's go. I want to see this."

Jerom thought that would do no good for Terek to see the problem, but
after all he was the boss so he just shrugged and led the way. Few
hundred meters of corridors, one turbolift ride and another few meters
of corridors led them to the large cargo bay door.

"Watch out, the overloads are unpredictable." warned him Jroem and
opened the door.

"...ckly, reroute the power!"

"And where the hell am I supposed to reroute it to?! The particle
generator's transformer output is ten times larger than..."

the rest of the heated conversation in the room was unintelligible for
both Jerom and Terek as they were nearly deafened by the loud crack and
blinded by a bolt of bright blue light that sparked between the large
particle emitter at the back of the room and the isolation padd it was
on. The both ducked in a reflect response to the shock.

"HOLY SMOKES WHAT'S HAPPENING IN HERE?!!" shouted Terek probably too
loud cause his ears were still ringing like a jingle bells. The two
technicians in the main control room that hung from the left side of the
ceiling like a large shuttle just looked puzzled at each other and then
just shouted back:

"WHAT?!! WE CAN'T HEAR YOU!!"

Jerom touched Terek;s arm to attract his attention and tried to sign him
that this is going nowhere. Terek nodded and rather walked to the ladder
and climbed to the control room. During the way his hearing got back a
bit although the high pitched noise was still in the background.

"I've said: What are you two doing?!"

"Eh, sir we were just trying to recalibrate the power distribution..."

"By blowing out the particle emitter? Do you even have an idea how hard
is it to get one of those? Let me see the grid."
he moved to the console and tapped a few commands. The hologram appeared
that displayed the layout of the all EPS rellays and conduits directly
affecting the radiation lab. He saw that more than half of them wasnn't
working right now and done his best to keep an anger at bay. Those two
morrons, just probably fried them all and it will take at least another
three days to replace.

"Jerom, do you think that if we use a rellays with higher capacity it
would help?"

He just shook his head: "No, because the grid is not built to handle it.
We have three options. One we move the lab somewhere else. Two, we
rebuild the whole energy distribution system with adjacent power nodes
or three we try to figure out something else."

"Those aren't options. We have to find another way around this. What's
in this section?"

Jerom approached console as well and called up the schematics for the
section of the station.
"Just three storages, one of them empty and currently unoccupied living
quaters. And wait, there is a backup secondary sensory platform built
from on the hull exterior right outside of the cargo bay."

"Are you kidding? You;ve been having a power problems and you haven't
noticed this leech?"

"Well what ca nI say? We didn't have power problem until now."

Suddenly it clicked in for Jerom. "Wait a second... The astrometrics is
still working on the sensory upgrades, aren't they?"

Terek nodded and suuddenly realized where Jerom is heading.

He tapped a few more commands to see the progress of astrometrics and
they read the details for a while.

"Jerom, can you...?"

"Already on it." Terek looked aside to see his friend at the next
console veryfiing the numbers.

"There it is. They use the same frequency band as the power rellays. No
wonder it has been causing the problems. They were interfering with each
other. The power distribution net for the lab might be a bit weaker, but
still it has to be able to hold."

"Great, we'll just need to compromise with the astrometrics about the
frequency band. I'll change ours for the moment, but we need to be sure,
they don't switch it again."

"Just send me the necessary modifications and I'll go and tell Jessica."
replied Terek and headed back to his office. "I'll leave this to your
capable hands here."

Mnemosyme sat at a quiet table and waited for the next person she had to give an eval to and clear for duty.  She drummed her finger on the table as she waited; preferring the informal setting to a stuffy office.  She watched the steady gait of the man walking up to where she was sitting.

Vlimar was surprised that he was called for a second exam, since he rejoined. Vlimar was used to "at war" status, him that fought in the Insurrection War as a Commanding Officer. He shrugged, thinking that if that's what he must do, it's what he's going to do. Vlimar entered the lounge, looking around for 2nd Lt Nyx. He immediately spotted her, as she was one of two wearing the Marine Officer uniform and the other one was a Major.

"Lieutenant Nyx, I presume?", Vlimar asked.

"Yes, I'm 2nd Lieutenant Nyx.  Please, have a seat, Colonel and my first name is  Mnemosyme."  She had stood to address him but motioned toward a chair and sat back down.

Vlimar smiled and sat down slowly. As the  waiter was passing by, he waves at him. "Can you bring me a Café au Lait?", he asked. His eyes then went from the waiter to Mnemosyme.

She waited while the colonel put in the quick order and when the waiter looked to her, she merely gave a small shake of her  head.   As the waiter went to retrieve the order, she continued, "But as my first name is as long as my rank perhaps you'd prefer to use my nick name, Nym or just my last name Nyx."

Vlimar smiled to remark. He agreed that Second Lieutenant Mnemosyme Nyx was a barrier to get on the shortlist, as Vlimar called it, of officer you want to call. It's always easier to call Jake than Christopher-Alexandre... Vlimar nodded.

"Then, Nyx it is... and you can call me Pont...", he replied.

The waiter place the colonel's drink on the table in front of him.   Nym asked, "There are a lot of things to do here, are you very busy?"  She thought these after battle evals were annoying when there was clearly much more important things to do.

Vlimar smiled to the question. In a way, a senior officer in a ship is always busy and can be free when they feel it is necessary. That was one of those cases. Vlimar looked at Nyx.

"Well, I give you all the time you need, Nyx.", he said. "This has to be done and I don't think I would be able to get away from it...", he added, laughing. Obviously, Vlimar decided to make the best of the meeting, whatever apprehensions he might have.

"Sir, with as much double talk as you just gave me, I'm sure you could have found a plausible reason to stall an evaluation."  Nym smiled back politely.  "But , getting back to business, Do you like your job?"

Vlimar couldn't but think {clever}. He smiled kindly and replied.

"I love my job. To be honest, I wanted to come back in Starfleet after a too long retirement.", he said. "When you've been doing the same thing for 20 years, want it or not, you start to love your job.", he added, simply.
Vlimar smiled as he concluded that initial answer, then sipped his Café au lait.

Mnemosyme made a noncommittal sound and asked, "How do you feel about your follow officers?"

Vlimar smiles, as he was taking another sip of his café. He put his cup down and looked at Nyx.

"Well, as a Starfleet Officer myself, I think it is important to respect the others and understand some have weaknesses and strengths... Some have more flaws than others, but, overall, I enjoy dealing with each and everyone of them.", Vlimar said, obvious referring to Jluaz for the "more flaws than others" part.

She mentally made a check mark and asked the next blank question.  "How do you feel about Starfleet?"

Vlimar then smiled. It was obvious rigid questions, taken from the counselor's course books and instructions. Vlimar liked originality and out of context situation. He though that the best way to really know someone is to go beyond the battered paths and surprise people.

"I love Starfleet, but I hate it's evolution, sometimes. Too much politics, I guess.", he instinctively replied.
Vlimar then stopped and looked at Nyx.. "Nyx, you know, you can talk to me directly, not through your academic books...", he replied,  waiting for an answer.

"But, I've already surmised that you are an excellent strategist that thrills at his job, but takes what he can get ... working with the raw material so to speak."  She took a moment to stare at him perhaps in the hopes it would make him feel as though she were stealing the information right from his head.  "I further find you fit for duty at this time.... just didn't want to disappoint ... or be found lacking in my job, Sir."  She continued to watch him from her relaxed position.  {At least he was as truly bored by those questions as I was.}

Vlimar smiled to the compliment. He showed a half surprised face, because he was not fully surprised. He expected Nyx to be able to describe him in words, words that Vlimar felt were his to lose...

"I realize you did your duty, and well, if I may say...", he added.  Vlimar then took the last sip of his café, then looked at Nyx again.  "Tell me about you, Nyx... Why Starfleet?", he dared asking.

"Why not," she replied with typical marine attitude.

Vlimar grinned to the answer. {Marines are Marines}, he told himself.  Even though Vlimar was wearing the Marines' uniform, he was hardly a Marine. When the Starfleet Secret Services were disbanded to let place
to the SSF, all SSS Officers were kept in the system, but were ordered  to wear the Marines uniform, so they wouldn't have to change their rank appellation. It was mostly a question of continuity.

"Then, tell me about you, Nyx...", he replied, expecting a cold Marine-type answer.

"I'm afraid there's not much to tell.... I'm a marine with half a brain.... I profile... that's all," she answered succinctly.  "I wouldn't want to waste any more of you time, Sir, Thank you."

Vlimar saw that anxiousness to leave. He slowly adopted a more relaxed position, almost feeling the roles were inversed.

"Oh, you are not wasting any time, Nyx. I know that you had 1 hour reserved for this interview and it's been... oh... 27 minutes...",he added, looking at his watch. "So, I have 33 minutes left to know you better...", he concluded.  "Where are you from, Nyx?"

"An outpost is where I was born," She replied.  "How many siblings do you have," she questioned back.  Banter was easier when both parties had to bee involved and less revealing which suited her fine.

Vlimar smiled to the answer. The PontBrillant family was unique in it's genre. Vlimar had no siblings what so ever, such his father had no siblings, as his father, etc.

"None, what so ever...", he replied, immediately. "I am the only child.", he said... "Am I sharing this infortune?", he asked.

"I don't find it unfortunate.  And you were born?"  Nym sat comfortably and watched the time tic away.  {33 minutes.... 31 minutes.... 30 minutes to go.}

Vlimar obviously saw that Nyx did not want to be there. He smiled, as he did not wish to hold her against her will, sort of a respectfully confinement.

"Well, I think I will get back to my duties. You owe me 28 minutes", Vlimar replied, as he stood up and offered his hand to Nyx to shake.

"I'll take them in PT," she responded and stood.

"Commander," T'Vel greeted Rangi as the Medical Advisor
approached her. "This is the latest diagnosis of Commander
Rodgers." The doctor handed Rangi a padd containing the
relevant information.

"Thankyou.." Rangi took the padd and read through the
information, glancing at Rick before she did so. He was

awake and murmuring to himself, unitelligible sounds. He
seemed at ease and in way, quite happy.

The report showed no improvement and Rangi did not expect
miracles. She handed back the padd.
" Captain Rodgers will be taking him this afternoon."
She looked at Rick, playing like a baby with his hands in
the air."

"Its tragic." she said

T'Vel looked at the man who, one moment was an esteemed
engineer and Starfleet officer, and the next seemed like an
infantile child, unable to help or care for himself.

"I believe that regenerative brain cell therapy may be
beneficial to him, but that is just speculation on my part,"
T'Vel said. "Even if such therapy succeeds, he would most
likely have to relearn all behaviors."

"Yes..." Rangi agreed, turning away. ".... and even with
that, his memory cannot be recaptured...all of its gone."
She looked at T'Vel and changed the subject. " So...'at
last' we have an almost completed infirmary."

T'Vel nodded. "Now that we have vacated the civilian medical
facilities, I believe Starfleet will appoint more civilian
staff. Aeran III has limited medical facilities and they
depend on us for advanced medical treatment."

They began to walk towards the door as they spoke, left the
Isolation unit and moved out into a wide corridor.Rangi
turned left and turning her head to T'Vel said :
"Yes...and I wanted to talk to you about that, indirectly
speaking."

"Commander?" T'Vel queried, raising an eyebrow.

"Scott came to see me yesterday. He is applying for a post on
the planet..the chief MO to be exact. It will be quite a
challenge to bring things up to scratch and I'm sure he
would do wellt. I'm pretty certain that he will be

offered the job."

"He is a qualified officer and certainly capable of filling
the position," T'Vel agreed.

Rangi nodded as they neared the lobby. "My job as Med

advisor demands alot of my time but, to be
honest, and particularly since I've been working in the CMO
position for the last few months, I know I'm going to miss
the hands on aspect. I have a solution though and I hope you
agree it will be a wise one."

"Indeed, being CMO of a starbase this size is not an easy
task," T'Vel said. "Especially during war time. The influx
of casualties has been high."

"Very high." Rangi agreed." I would like to propose that you
take a deputy CMO position." Rangi said. " It would free me
for my other work but at the same time I will be able to
keep an active role here too. What do you say T'vel?...will
you take it?"

"I will be honoured to accept the position, Commander
Summers," T'Vel said, inclining her head towards Rangi.

"Excellent." Rangi replied with a very satisfied tone. She
smiled to the Vulcan doctor. " I'm glad you said that."

"When would you like the position to take effect,
Commander?" T'Vel asked.

" Almost immediately." Rangi answered. " We have after all
overseen the rebuilding of the infirmary jointly havent we?
Your suggestions were sometimes very useful so I would like
to confirm the arrangement with the Commodore and then we
can put it into practice."

"Thank you, Commander," T'Vel replied. "I am grateful for
your consideration." Though not typically a sentimental
species, somewhere deep inside T'Vel it felt good that she
would be serving in the position that was once her mate's.

Rangi was satisfied. It felt as though things were beginning
to go well.
"Shall we take at look at the orthodepidic department?" she
asked and T'Vel agreed.

T'Vel walked down the corridor in the outer ring where her apartment was located. It had been a long day and thoughts of Commander Rodgers still stayed with her, as well as the conversation she had with Commander Summers concerning her new position. All signs pointed to a calculated act of revenge that was carried out on the Starbase's Engineer, but the motivation remained a mystery. It was a tragic event indeed, and T'Vel wished the best for MaiKai and Rachel, who were undoubtedly the hardest hit by this. MaiKai had looked calm when T'Vel had seen her, and situation strangely enough reminded her of her own.

Both were senior medical officers with children on the starbase, both who had lost a partner in one way or another. There was still hope for MaiKai that Rick would recover, even though the chances were miniscule and his memories were practically gone. But for T'Vel, there was no such hope. And hope was not an emotion she allowed herself to indulge in. She had become somewhat frayed at the edges since Sokas' death. There had been no time to grieve properly. Savek and Paleris depended on her, perhaps Savek more so than his younger sister.

It was not easy raising a child with V'Lyr Syndrome. He lacked the mental capacity fully analyse and suppress his emotions. He would never be seen as a "normal" Vulcan, unable to follow kolinahr or be enlightened by logic. Still, Savek had on occasion expressed the urge to try, inspired by his father's strong control over his own emotions and his infallible logic. Sokas had been the boy's mentor and idol, but now he was gone and T'Vel remained, a mother who was unsure of how to adequately express affection towards a child that so desperately needed to be shown it.

Her own grasp on logical was not exemplary. She had never completed kolinahr, finding it too hard to accomplish. She had not grown up on Vulcan and been around emotional species for most of her life. It was on her first visit to Vulcan that she met Sokas. Their marriage had been arranged by their parents and she was eager to be in his presence, thinking that it would inspire her to become more logical, to seek out the teachings of Surak with more vigor. But she didn't not feel that. Instead, she saw herself as inferior to him, and although their bond was affectionate and strong, he was always the more logical one.

His death was easier on her than she expected. Perhaps all these years apart prepared her for losing him eventually. But still it was trying. She walked into the residence they once shared, one of the few that remained standing following the attack. It was once again pristine, decorated in a late 22nd century Vulcan style, but it was not complete, and would never be complete without Sokas.

Bren was still on the bridge when his combadge chirruped again. "Ohmsford here," he said, tapping the badge.

"Commander, you have an incoming transmission from Starbase Unity," the voice of one of the communications officers from the Omega Shipyards said. "It's from Captain Rojac."

"Send it through, please," Bren replied as he turned to the Tactical Console. "Now is as good a time as any to see if the viewer's working properly," he muttered to himself as he rerouted the communication to the main viewer.

The screen flickered, and shifted form the First Taskforce logo to that of Rojac's familiar, bearded face. "Hello old friend." Rojac greeted his former Commanding Officer. "What are you doing to MY ship?"

"Rojac," Bren greeted the Chimera's captain with a broad grin. He walked closer to the viewer so that Rojac could see him more clearly. He crossed his arms and stared comically at the screen. "Who says she's your ship. If I recall, I'm the only Chimera CO so far who hasn't lost a ship."

"You better knock on wood, Bren." Rojac replied. "You still have to make the trip here."

Bren just laughed. "It's good to see you too. How do you like your new bridge?" He stepped to one side a little so that Rojac could more clearly survey the Chimera-C's bridge.

"Efficient." Rojac nodded approvingly. "I like the silver. Reminds me of how they used to be. Is it all operational yet?"

"All primary systems are online," Bren replied. "They're not as efficient yet as I'd like them to be, but we were rushed into post-production so Mr Kroizter will have to tweak them while underway."

"Last report had the warp drive maxing out at warp four. Has Mr. Kroitzer improved that any yet?" Rojac asked.

- Hide quoted text -
"Yes, as a matter of fact," Bren replied with a nod. "You have a very smart young engineer there, Cropa. You caught us just before a warp flight test, actually. We're even running ahead of schedule. Imagine that... not something you hear often in Starfleet."

"No. Not often." Rojac gave a sullen grin. "Rick must have trained him well..."

"If all goes well we should have her for you by early next week," Bren said, confident that they would make their launch date.

Rojac tried to cheer himself up, and grinned back up at the screen. "I'll provide the champagne. Early next week then."

"It's a date," Bren grinned. "I'll let you know how the warp flight test went and send it to you with my latest report."

"Very well, boss." Rojac gave a mock salute, touching his right brow with a stiff right hand. "Rojac out."

*** Guzman / Summers Quarters * SB Unity ***

Freshly bathed and dressed in cherry red pyjamas, Martin
hopped his way towards his bedroom, narrowly missing an
elegant vase of flowers positioned near the sofa.
"You'll have an accident if you're not careful." Rangi
warned as she followed behind him.
The hopping ceased for four steps.

"Rachel wasnt at school today" he said, breaking into a run.

"Wasn't she?" Rangi asked. " ..though I'm not really
surprised.

Martin catapulted himself onto his bed as Rangi reached the
door.
"Why aren't you? Isnt she very well?" he asked bouncing up
and down.

"Her Dad isn't." Rangi replied, stooping to pick up a toy
which she placed on one the shelves lining the wall."She may
have been saying goodbye to him."

"Is he dead?" Martin asked allowing himself to bounce to a
standstill.
Rangi glanced at him quickly. " No no." she answered. " But
he's....not himself." She walked towards a tall cupboard and
opened the door.

" What's the matter with him?" Martin wanted to know.

" He had a ...a mishap." Rangi said, opening a drawer and
carefully laying the clothes she carried into it.
"What's one of those?" Martin asked.

Rangi closed the drawer and shut the cupboard.
" It's when something unpleasant happens to you that you
can't avoid." she said and smiled to him as she turned to
face him.

"Is he going to be in the 'firmary for long?" came the next
question.

"The INfirmary." Rangi corrected automatically " No..he's
being moved to a facilty on Earth. The specialist doctors
there will be able to help him more than we can here." she
said "...but it will be quite some time before he's well
again."

Martin considered this briefly. " Poor Rachel." he stated
then asked "Will my dad be home tonight?"

"Yes..poor Rachel. " Rangi repeated quietly then answered "
Yes he will but not for an hour or so. He has alot of work
to do." She looked down at the little boy sitting on the
pillows of his bed.
"Is it because of the war?" he asked, looking up at her with
large brown eyes.

"Yes..get in please." she replied and he lifted the
coverlet, wriggling himself into bed.
He frowned."When will the war end?" he enquired with a tone
of complaint . " Daddy doesnt have time to play much now."

"I dont know." Rangi answered, pulling the coverlet
straighter. " Sometimes they can last a very long time."

"Well when I'm big I'm going to join the war." he said. " I
will be a tactical officer and my ship will win all the
battles like I do in the TacSim."
He looked up at as she bent to tuck him in, a confident
expression on his face.

"Wars aren't games Martin." Rangi said "They aren't fun and
I hope you never have to go to war."
She saw his expression change so stooped closer and kissed
him, smiling as she stood up to show she wasn't annoyed with
him despite the tone she had used. "Would you like a story?"
she suggested."

"Yes please! " he said at once " Noggin!!"

Rangi feined surprise. " Again?" she asked and he nodded
eagerly."Where is it?" she asked.
He pointed across the room "There." he said and snuggled
under the covers he had pulled up around him as she went to
find the picturepadd.
He grinned at her when she returned and moved so that there
was more room for her to sit on the edge of his bed.
She pressed a button on the beside table and immediately the
main lights dimmed, leaving only a pool of light shining
down on them.
"Ok..." Rangi said and looking at her son but already
knowing the answer asked : " Are we going from the
beginning?"

"Yes we are." he said, reaching out to tap the padd. Notes
of music began to play, a familiar introduction to the
stories.
Rangi settled herself with one arm around him as he leaned
against her and the pillows.
The first picture appeared on the padd and Rangi began to
read the words.

In the lands of the North, where the black rocks stand
guard.."
"Against the sea." Martin joined in. He looked up at her and
grinned. She smiled back. "The sea." she said in agreement
then continued: "...In the dark night that is.."

"Very long." Martin chimed in.

"The men of the Northlands sit by the.."

"Great log fires and they tell a tale.." Martin and Rangi
said together.
He settled down further onto the pillows and Rangi began the
stories as he watched the pictures change. He knew the well
loved tales very well and occasionally finished sentences
for her as the Sagas of Noggin unfolded.
He pointed to his favourite character when it appeared,
smiling up at her happily and Rangi read on about the
bravest soldier Thor Nogson and the strongest one.. Olaf,
finally coming to her own favourite... Graculus the Green
bird.
Eventually it was ended and Martin settled to sleep.

"NogBad the Bad never wins does he?" Martin said happily and
Rangi shook her head. " No..he never does." she replied "
Now go to sleep..it's getting late.... Goodnight."
They kissed each other and Rangi walked to the door.
"Goodnight" Martin answered as the light went out.
Rangi gently closed the door and wandered across to the sofa
glancing at the time as she went, wondering what time Shane
would get in.

After Gustav and the others had finished and was satisfied with the
simulation Gustav contacted Commander Ohmsford.

+taps+ Lieutenant Kroitzer to Commander Ohmsford

Bren was alone on the Main Bridge tapping away at the MSD display when
his combadge chirruped.

"Ohmsford here," he replied, tapping his badge. "How can I help you,
Lieutenant?"

"I'm contacting you to report that the warp drive, transporters and
tractor beam are now fully operational, and that all minor engineering
works will be completed within the hour" Gustav said proud of the
engineering team for working so hard all this time.

Bren, surprised, stopped what he was doing. "That's quite impressive,
Lieutenant. You managed to finish up sooner than I expected."

"I had a good team behind me sir" Gustav said "how are things
progressing on your end?" he added.

"The internal sensors are almost fully online. I'm busy rerouting the
available systems to the bridge and the Master Systems Display," Bren
replied.

"Great sir.....any idea when we will be able to take the ship out for
a bit of a joy ride?". Gustav asked wanting test out the new systems
installed on the drive.

"It shouldn't be too long now, Lieutenant," Bren replied as he
accessed a systems list on the MSD. "Within the next two hours she
should be ready for a warp flight test, then we can see if she's ready
for the great unknown. How does that sound?"

"Sounds good sir, if there is any way I can help seed things up then
just tell me?." Gustav said, after a week of nearly constant work he
was eager to get underway, he wanted to get back to Unity and back to
Mimi.

"I think a thorough diagnostic on the internal sensors can help
eliminate any remaining teething problems," Bren suggested. He was
just as eager to get to Unity to see Liev, who'd been stationed there
since the base opened. "Then everything should be fine."

"Copy that Commander, I'll get on it right away then report to the
bridge before we launch". Gustav said already moving to start more
work.

"See you in a few, Lieutenant," Bren said as he continued to work on the MSD.

"Aye sir" was Gustav's response as he ran the diagnostic on the
internal sensors.

After the diagnostic results showed after about an hour on the console
in front of him Gustav looked over the results "Hmmm......the sensors
power are fluctuating on deck five" Gustav said to himself while
tracking down the problem, a power relay by holodeck 2, {I'll fix that
on my way to the bridge} picking up what he needed Gustav made his way
to deck 5.

The relay had only taken about 30 minutes to fix, just a faulty
connection, after Gustav had packed his work gear up he headed to the
bridge, handing his kit to a passing engineer and asking him to put it
back in storage.

Upon entering the bridge Gustav reported to Bren and handed him his
full report of the work done on the ship since his arrival minus his
work on the power relay, {I'm glad that I added to the report every
night after knocking off my shift} he then took his position at the
engineering station on the bridge.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240811.22 Meeting Log, Cmdr. Lernen Harbright, 1TF IA

----------
Begin Log
----------

Lernen cleared his throat. "Well firstly I'll hope you forgive
me for not standing."  The bitter humour didn't really strike
a chord and there was no laughter even forced from around
the table.  Lernen guessed that most of them were
uncomfortable having to deal with someone confined to a
chair especially these days.  "I'll break my report down into
three seperate pieces. The Romulans, Local Powers and
Ranged Powers."

"Firstly The Romulans.  Whilst the Colonel is correct in saying
that Tal'Shiar communications perhaps more important is
where those spikes in communications took place.   The
spikes in communications activity took place on several
worlds along the Romulan border with Federation and Alliance
space there.  No particular surprise there.  However there was
another spike in communications triangulated to somewhere a
bit deeper into Romulan territory, a place called the Raylin
System.  I looks like that is their regional command post
coordinating the forward command posts.  We've sent in a few
deep cover operatives to validate that information.  Overall the
Romulan Military Strategy appears to be focused on taking out
the sensor grids observing their borders.  General Ivanov
confirmed that after the Battle of Aeren III that the first target
the Romulans had hit was the Alliance Sensor Network."

"The Klingons have shown surprising reluctance to enter conflict
with the Romulans.  This is most likely due to inter-House tensions
being at their hight since around forty years ago.  I suspect the
Tal'Shiar is likely stirring that particular Hornet's nest with all
they've got.  The Alliance on the other hand seems to be doing the
opposite.  Intelligence indicates that there was a massive Romulan
Force which tried to attack the Rios System where the Erassians
have a small shipyard facility early reports seem to indicate the
Battle size was on a par with the Battle of Aeren III.  The Erassians
sent in the Second and Third Fleets and the Romulans were repelled
though rumours indicate the Hermes and several of it's support
Destroyers were either badly damaged or destroyed.  Other evidence
supporting this includes the sharp rise in the cost of shipbuilding
materials indicating a sudden lack of it on the open market."

"Further away the Cardassian Union has been stirring and have been
aggressively patroling their borders.  Whilst it doesn't immediately
effect us it could have a knock on effect if the situation deteriorates.
Our intelligence on Breen activity is sketchy at best during most times
but what we have managed to glean seems to indicate eratic
movements of ships.  This may be tied in to last years incident in the
Antigonis System, so we've joined resources with SFI and sent a few
cloaked ships into the area to verify whats going on.  Oh and before
anyone asks I'm not going to comment on internal investigations."

[USS Chimera] SD 240811.22 | USS Rapier | Duty Log, Cmdr Trzetrzelewska (ACO)

= USS Rapier - Shuttlebay =

Natalia stood inside the Shuttlebay Control Room of the Rapier's single shuttlebay and watched as all crew cleared the bay floor. When it was all clear, the light on the console in front of her turned green, signaling that the bay was ready for launch. She looked through the glass pane at the oval shaped two-deck structure on the shuttlebay. The registry SG-160 was painted on the hull and it was the last of the Romulan NZ listening outposts to be deployed. SG-160's crew was already inside the cramped structure, standing by for Natalia's order.

"Bridge this is Shuttlebay; we are ready to launch 160," Natalia said when she pressed the comm, repeating the same words she had said almost 159 times before.

"Shuttlebay, you are clear for launch," came Pazla's somewhat weary-sounding reply.

"SG-160, this is Shuttlebay Control, stand by for deployment," she said as she opened the shuttlebay doors.

The large bay spacedoors opened slowly, revealing the blackness of the Neutral Zone outside. Two tractor beams latched onto the SG-160 and the station's commander spoke to Natalia over the comm.

"This is Lieutenant Vember," he said to her. "We are ready to launch, Shuttlebay Control."

"Acknowledged. You are clear to launch, SG-160. Good luck. See you in a few months," Natalia said with a smile as SG-160 engaged its thrusters, lifting up slowly off the ground.

The crew inside the Shuttlebay Control Room watched tensely as the tractor beams steadied, SG-160 moving it through the doors with literally one meter to spare on each side. As soon as it was clear, Natalia released the tractor beams.

"All clear, Rapier. Engaging cloak now. Godspeed!" Vember said as the station cloaked and disappeared, passing through the Rapier's cloak undetected and into position of the NZ sensor outpost grid.

Natalia let out a breath she didn't realise she'd been holding. At last, the mission was done! Behind her, the four crewmen in the room started applauding. It had been a trying past few months and now they could finally head back to Unity. Turning around, Natalia clapped her hands together as well, applauding them as well.

"I believe it's time to go home!" she said as she walked towards. "Day after tomorrow this time we'll be home. I'm sure the captain wants his ship back."

While the Rapier's original captain had been assigned by Intel for some classified mission, Natalia had been Acting CO for the duration of the mission. She had spent very little time on the bridge however, with Pazla being in charge of ship operations while Natalia was in charge and oversaw the project and the deployment of the outposts.

"Commander Trzetrzelewksa to Lieutenant Dacour," she said, tapping her commbadge as she walked out of the shuttlebay and into the corridor. "We're done at last, Pazla. Set a course for Unity!"

[USS Chimera] SD 240811.22 | USS Rapier | Duty Log, ALt Dacour (AXO)

= USS Rapier - Romulan Neutral Zone =

Pazla Dacour sat in the command chair of the USS Rapier, reviewing the latest statistics and reports of the ship's mission: to deploy the covert Starfleet outposts along the Neutral Zone. The mission was painstakingly slow and required a lot of patience, something which Pazla wasn't exactly known for but had to learn very quickly when she was assigned as the Rapier's Acting XO almost 6 months ago.

The assignment had come quickly, shortly after the Battle of Aeran III. So quickly, in fact, that she had shipped out not three weeks later. Starfleet wanted to get the outposts deployed as quickly as possible, not having any time to waste while the Romulans managed to regroup themselves with the Federation's knowledge. The Rapier was cloaked and under communications silence as well during the its time in the NZ, and continuously on Yellow Alert. She returned once a month to Unity to fetch a new batch of outposts as well as new crew and give a status update of the project.

The Cargo Bays and some of the non-essential deck space had been converted to accommodate the small outposts, which were stacked onboard the ship like sardines in a can and assembled just before their deployment in space. The outposts were based on hulls that were used for captain's yachts for older Nebula class and Galaxy class ships, of which there seemed to be a surpluss. The yachts were overhauled, their warp capabilities removed and their internal configuration optimised to contain accommodations for six crew and the technology necessary to serve as a listening post.

The small, saucer-shaped outposts were cloaked so deployment happened undercover, with no one being any the wiser. But still it was a painstaking and nerve wrecking process. The outposts barely fit through the Saber class ship's small shuttle bay doors and the activation of their cloak had to be perfectly timed when they were released. One wrong move and the Rapier's cloak could be disrupted, revealing their presence to any Romulan spy satellites or similarly cloaked ships that were nearby.

But the mission was almost coming to an end after several months and Pazla was very grateful for it. The ship's resources were being stretched to the limit with maintaining the cloak for weeks at a time, and there had been a few close calls. They needed to return to Unity to refuel and refit the ship again, as well as replenish personnel. The Rapier herself was operating only on skeleton staff, but had been full of officers on departure every time who were going to serve as crew for the outposts.

She was busy reading the status of the cloaking device when she was interupted by a call from the Shuttlebay.

"Shuttlebay to Bridge; we are ready to deploy 159," the voice of the acting CO said. "Just one more to go after this, then we're done."

And not a moment too soon, she thought. "Confirm Shuttlebay, you are clear to deploy. Go ahead."

[USS Chimera] SD 240811.21 NPC Duty Log [Starbase 234] MasterChief Heath Johnson (MAA)

***Sickbay***

Johnson looked at Commander Rodgers, who was sleeping. Since the attack, there had been a huge uproar, with Lt.JG Jardan finally assigning the investigation to him. His first task had been to check on Rodgers, to get a sense of what had happened. Now, as he looked on, a deep and fierce rage filled his mind. { Don't worry sir, I'll get the bastard who did this.} Johnson took one last look and left sickbay.

***Operations Room***

" So you managed to set up a camera? I thought there wasn't any in the area?" Johnson asked the Technician. The tech smiled." It was a need to know basis. After what had happened in the battle, I got a verbal order from command to set up a security field. Unfortunately, I was only able to set up the camera system. No audio, I'm afraid. " The tech pushed a few buttons and soon they were watching the attack on screen. " So how were they not able to see the cam?" Johnson wanted to know." I used these," replied the tech handing what looked like a button to Johnson.," Very small and hard to spot, unless you know what to look for." They watched the attack. While they were watching Johnson thought out loud, " I wish I could read lips. Wait, that looks like Arnold! I thought he died in the battle?" " Apparently not. Who was he, anyway?" " He was part of the security department. "

The tech thought a moment," I know a little about reading lips, Chief. let me look again" The tech watched closly this time. Finally, he looked up." I think l have a name for you. Actually, two. Hoack something and a Duvoro. And something about a brother?" Thinking a moment, Johnson decided to ask around. " Good work. It gives me something to work with." Johnson left the room.

*** Security Office***

Johnson entered the office and walked over to the computer. First, he entered the Hoack into the computer.[No records].He next checked the name Duvoro, but got the same result. He then brought up Rodger's file and searched for the names. He did not find them, but came up with the information that he had a brother named Trent. ( Interesting. ) He thought a moment, then walked over to the comm system +Please find a Trent Rodgers and get him for me. It's a security matter. I'll Hold.+

=Starbase Unity=

Newly promoted Captain Trent Rodgers stood quietly over his brother,
who laid asleep peacefully on a biobed.

Trent had arrived a few minutes ago on a runabout. The Lancelot, which
was recently repaired, was being kept in reserve for the time being. The
Lance would probably see action the moment Trent returned to Earth.

When Trent had arrived at the starbase, Rick hadn't even recognized him.
Everything Trent had been told was true. His brother didn't even speak.
He just had this stare, this glazed look in his eyes. There was nothing
behind those eyes, at least not what he could tell.

A few days earlier, a passing starbase security crewman had found
Rick tied to a chair in a dark room. The door had been left open, making
finding the engineer easier. They had rushed him to sickbay, only to
discover that there was nothing they could do for him.

As Trent watched Rick sleep, he couldn't help to feel that this was his
fault. He held a copy of the isolinear rod that they had found with Rick in
his left hand. He had viewed it on the runabout. He then watched it again
and again. He had viewed it several times, feeling more helpless than
angry.

He had also read the medical report from Commander Summers more
than once, which made him fell even more helpless.

Trent reached down and gently pulled up the covers up over Rick's
shoulders. As he did so, he heard the door open behind him. He noticed
MaiKai enter the room.

Mai just stood there upon entering the room realizing Trent was ... well
paying his respects.  Are mind was already paralyzed she felt, so she
decided to stop all movement at the moment.

"How are you holding up?" Trent asked, keeping his focus on Rick.

"I'm not.  That's how I'm holding up..." Mai stated flatly.  Like Trent really
had to ask.

"I'm going to take him back to Earth," Trent said, finally turning to
face his sister-in-law.

She could only nod.  She tried to open her mouth, but nothing would
come out.

"Starfleet Medical is going to provide him with the best care possible,"
Trent said. "They already have a room set up for him and are gathering
some of the best people in their fields to see what they can do to help.
While I don't like the idea of Ricky being treated like a Guinea Pig, I
don't see any other choice."

Trent knew he didn't mean to make her cry, but she started to.  With each
sentence that he said just rippled an emotion through her never felt before.
It tore at her heart letting the tears flow that she thought she had gotten rid
of.

"You're welcome to come back with me," Trent said.

"Thanks, but no," Mai wasn't even thinking really what Trent was saying
though she should've been.  She stood there letting her face be cleansed by
an ocean of tears.  Her lips started to tremble as the tears were starting to
cease.

"I understand," Trent said. "And don't worry. Sarah and I will make sure
that he's taken care of properly. If I'm off somewhere on the Lancelot, at
least she'll be there for him."

Trent knelt down and ran a hand over Rick's left cheek.

"As for the man responsible for this ...," Trent said, with a hint of anger in
his voice and his eyes. "... the Romulans, nor anyone else for that matter will
be able to protect him. I'll find Hoack and his associate. And, when I do ..."

MaiKai reached out and touched her brother-in-law on the shoulder and
retracted once he stopped talking.

"You and Rachel are family. You always will be," Trent said. "I want you
to understand that."

"I know thank you Trent.  For everything".

Trent stood in front of Mai. He surprised himself when he gave her a hug,
Maybe it was because he thought that's what Rick would have wanted. Then
again, maybe that's what he thought was needed. Maybe that's what he
needed.

When he pulled back after a long moment, he put a hand on each of her
shoulders and looked at her.

"If you need anything, and I mean anything, then you let me know," he said
still feeling as numb as he did when he first arrived, She just nodded as he
turned to face his brother once more.

"I'd better go and make arraignments for the trip back," he said softly. He didn't
move for a moment, but then turned and exited the room.

=/\= SB 234 - Unity - Guest quarters =/\=
Dadick paced nervously over and over on the same bit of carpet in their rented suite on Starbase 234: Unity.  His nerves were reaching breaking point as he waited on the arrival of their would be employer whose icy demeanour was far more terrifying than the thought of currently being camped out on the front lines of an interstellar war between two Galactic Superpowers.

Rowl tried to ignore Dadick's pacing and present a calm front.  His fingers beat out an agitated rhythm that seemed to provide the dirge for Dadick's repeated steps.  "What time is it now," Rowl asked hoping that this would be over soon.
"Five minutes after you last bloody asked me!" Dadick snapped.  "She should be on board the station now she'll be coming to us."

"I know... I just wish it was over with," Rowl said on a sigh.  "What's taking her so long.... never mind .... forget I asked that... its just nerves I guess."   He stood and started his own pacing, "I bought a bottle of whiskey when I was out earlier."  It was as if the silence begged to be filled by something even if it was idle chatter.
"And I would love to have a drink now but if she comes in and smells booze on us..." Dadick let the sentence fall by the wayside. It was obvious enough what would happen.
Rowl nodded his head and after a long pause, "After?"
Dadick grinned "Of course, we'll have our paycheck to celebrate."  The grin fell from his face as there was a hiss from the door opening and he automatically turned and bowed towards the door. "High Priestess, You honour us with your presence."
Rowl turned as well and repeated Dadick's actions, but allowed the other man to do the talking.

"Oh save the grovelling you pathetic wretches.  I'm not here for you in any case, I'm here to deal with the target.  Your job is at an end."  She said in her matriarchal tone.  It was odd despite her being over 60 she looked like she was still in her mid forties, her skin was still taught, her bearing elegant and proud as well as the sheer atmosphere of dominance that she exuded.  Even Dadick whose tastes ran to women quite a bit younger than himself was despite his fear of her deeply attracted to her.  He could only wonder if Rowl felt the same.
Rowl couldn't help it but to look the priestess over from top to bottom and quite approved of the whole package.  He might have even tried to be charming if it wasn't for that icy stare.  He did however pull out a chair and offered her a seat while asking, "Can I get you something?"

She sniffed haughtily "As if I would deign to eat or drink anything in this filthy hovel.  Tell me where is the target?"
"She's staying in the temporary quarters at the moment.... waiting for her new orders or ship  to arrive," Rowl spouted quickly and pushed the chair back in.
"Good"  She said then spun to depart.
"High Priestess?"  Dadick ventured softly.
What is it?" She said without turning back, though the venom in her voice was loud enough.
"About the matter of us being paid..." Dadick continued softly.
She gave a snort of disgust and waved to her aide standing in the doorway who handed out a briefcase each to both of the men.  "As agreed upon." she said before walking out of the room.
Rowl waited until the door hissed closed and then smiled at Dadick as he reached into the nearest cabinet and pulled down the bottle of whiskey.

rangi.summers@mojwap.sk wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

*** CMO Office * StarBase Unity ***

The two part report was done.
It began:
' Commander Rodgers.Rick / Isolation unit 1, SB 234.' and
continued with his current state then listed all tests
carried out to date, the reason they were conducted and
detailed results if known.
A prognosis was given at the end.

The second part was written free of medical terminology and
made sober reading.

'Commander Rodgers condition has seen only slight
improvement since he was adimitted to the infirmary in that
his overall fear has diminished.

He responds to light and sound stimulation.

He has semi control of his head and can follow a moving
object.

He is showing signs of recognising his main carer by making
attempts to smile and with general excitement when she
appears.

He exhibits unease with unfamiliar faces.

His gross motor skills are limited to controlled eye
movement and supporting his own head.

He is unable to balance so cannot sit unaided.

He is unable to feed unaided.

He is unable to control bodily function.

His fine motor skills are poor, with limited hand / eye
coordination.

I would gauge his ability as that of a twelve week old
infant.

The results of our tests but moreso the information given to
me by Captain Rojac, leads to the conclusion that Command
Rodgers memory has been wiped clean by use of an
unidentified process carried out by person or persons
unknown.

I cannot yet determine if Commander Rodgers will regain any
or all of his former abilities although I am confident that
his episodic and semantic memory will remain a void.

It is my recommendation that Commander Rodgers be moved to a
permanent location specialising in long term rehabilitation.

+/+Addendum+/+

The explanation of the method used to bring about Commander
Rodgers condition details the level of pain inflicted.
This is beyond the 'norm' as laid out in the Schultz 101
Scale and I think it a strong possiblity that Commander
Rodgers may have revealed classified information under this
prolonged level of duress.'

-=- Medical Starbase 19 - Deck 4 -=-

David Hackworth chimed the door of the room and nodded at the

nurse who was just leaving. The room smelt of disinfectant. It was a

smell that raised the heckles on the back of his neck. To a soldier's

brain, it meant that things were bad and going to get worse.

He looked down at the figure on the bed. There were five medals

pinned to the pillow, apparently someone had not forgotten the

actions taken by the crew of Star base 234 in the midst of giving

every other guy in the rescue fleet a pat on the back and a pay rise.

He shook his head and sat down.

"You really missed a good party," he whispered, pulling out a bottle

of the good stuff that he had saved.. The solid gold pips of full lieutenant

winked for a moment in the light for the night light next to the

bed, "General Bretam was buying. Damn, he can drink. And that

snake colonel that followed him around. And the general told this

story, damn it was funny. 'bout how the colonel used to command

an ODA detachment and was always getting into trouble. And

another him being on waste disposal duty."

So David told is friend the two stories, and a few others. About

how MCaptain McKnight used to have a crush on some Chief

medical officer and almost broke her foot at a dance, to cap it all

she was dating the ships commanding officer at the time. He told

her about the meetings between all the ship Captain's that had been

involved in the rescue of SB234.

And he told her about how one of vessels had managed to

transport the civilians off the station and warping away, making a run

for the Klingon space under fire. It was a Nova Class of all things,

it had no life support and was a complete blaze, or so the Klingons

said, but the civilians had survived, along with a few of the crew.

But after telling story after story and joke after joke, the bottle

was finally empty and it was time to leave. "Well, Annie Elgars…."

He paused and smiled, "Lieutenant. They say you might be able to

hear me. And they say you might come out of it someday. I've left t

he name of my…. are unit with them. They are taking all the combat

survivors from The Stand on the Star base 234 and making some

Expeditionary Force for 1st Task Force." He laughed and wiped

away a tear, "If you can believe that. You're included as one of

us. You and all the over…. wounded. And the dead. So, you

can, you know…."

He stopped and wiped a tear away. "And you know about the

medals and promotion…. you are an officer now girl." He smiled

and tried to think of something else to say but nothing came to

mind, "I gotta go," he said looking at the time and trying not to

look at the burnt face behind the tubes, as the machine sucked

in and out.

"since you've no next of kin, no one will, you know…. turn

you off. And apparently they are moving you to a nice green

planet. They've got plenty of room and really good facilities

they've got plenty of room and really good facilities. So they

are going to leave you hooked up just encase…"

He wished now he hadn't finished the bottle. He could use a

little taste. He took her hand one last time. "Thanks for rigging up

subsection twenty." He nodded at her, one soldier to another.

"I know it saved your ass too. But it still saved mine." He nodded

again hoping she wuld do the thing with grabbing his hand, but

there was no response. "Well, bye, Annie Elgars." He lent down and

kissed her on bandage rapped around her forehead, "take care."

Finally, he turned and left the room. Behind him it was silent except

for the suck and whir of the machines.

Mimi was determined to make their night out for who knew how long a
great one. She pushed her concerns to the back of her mind and left
them there to chill out. The steak dinners had been delicious and
Gustav was entertaining as always. As they finished up their shared
dessert of triple chocolate fudge cake; Mimi suggested, "Let's go
dancing... please?" Her eyes sparkled like a blue flame in the
candlelight as she waited for his reply.

Gustav wasn't much of a dancer and Mimi knew this but after a night
like this he couldn't refuse her request "If that is what you'd like
dear" he said while lightly taking Mimi's hand in his and leading her
up to the dance floor.

She beamed at him for his efforts because she knew he didn't like to
dance much. He always said it was because he wasn't very good, but at
least he didn't step on her feet and he could keep rhythm.... that's
more than many others could do. She laid her head on his shoulder and
let him sort of sway and step their way around the room to the music
of the orchestra.

As they made there way around the dance floor Gustav couldn't help but
notice the eyes that were on them both, he felt nervous as he thought
they were probably criticising his dancing but he didn't care to much
as he was there with the woman that he loved making her happy.

She sensed him tense up a bit and moved her head so that she could
place a small kiss on his neck just above the collar of his shirt.
"Sweetie, how about a walk through the arboretum instead?"

Not wanting to sound to eager t leave the dance floor all Gustav said
was "please".

Mimi couldn't help the small giggle at his response, but grabbed his
hand and lead him off the dance floor.

Once in the arboretum Gustav relaxed again, gently putting his arm
around Mimi's waist  they both started walking through the greenery
taking in the flowers and other assorted plants, picking a rose from
one of the bushes that they passed Gustav handed it to Mimi, not
saying a word he leaned down and kissed her gently but passionately on
the lips.

The soft lighting of the arboretum was romantic and the fragrance from
the flowers was intoxicating. She leaned further into his embrace as
her arms came around his neck. She held the flower in one hand almost
crushing it while the fingers on her other hand played with the hair
at the nape of his neck.

After the kiss had finished Gustav looked deep into her blue eyes
Gustav said "I love you Mimi" while pulling out a box from his pocket,
he opened it to reveal a delicate diamond and gold necklace nestled in
the felt lined box.

"You... I.... its beautiful," her fingers trembled as they traced the
chain. "I don't need this," she started as she met his expectant gaze.
She brushed her fingers through the hair at his temple whispering,
"Love you."

"I know you don't need it, but I wanted to give you this before I left
for the new Chimera" Gustav said smiling at Mimi while taking the
necklace from the box.

He put the necklace on her and the diamond twinkle against the black
dress like a star in the night sky. She smiled and a tear slid down
her cheek as she stood on tip toe and brushed her lips over his.

Gustav kissed Mimi back them brushed her tear away with the back of
his finger "I don't want this night to end but I think we should be
heading back, I've an early transport to catch" he said with regret in
his voice.

Too choked up to say anything Mimi nodded and rested her head on his shoulder again as they walked back through arboretum to their quarters.  She smiled enjoying the warmth of him holding her close as they went.

Athena entered the small living space that she'd been assigned to use and tossed the medication that the doctor had given her on the stand by the door.  Other than a bit of bruising; the gash on her left temple had been repaired.  She dropped into a chair and pulled her feet up to rest on the chair's edge.  She rubbed a finger over the bridge of her nose in the hopes of easing the pounding in her head.

{One department tells you to rest: while the other practically drive you insane with question.}  She sighed as she placed her feet on the floor and stood.  She went to the small desk and accessed the required programs on the small console there.  {I'll do these last two reports and then a nap.}

    Subject:  Commander Lernen Harbright
    Status:  Fit for Duty

Although the commander could benefit from a few more counseling sessions, he is Fit for Duty.  He pours his energies into his job enough to let it be his sole focus.  I would say that he is only a danger to himself, but not enough so to effect his abilities.

Subject:  Rat'Tel Snacdok  - Med Tech
    Status:  Unfit for Duty

Further assessment of Mr. Snacdok indicates he needs to be placed in the psychiatric ward and listed as a danger to himself and others.  He exhibits all the signs of Post Traumatic Stress.  His recent as well as distant background needs to be checked; looking for a point when he may have been tortured.

Athena signed and sent in her reports.  She requested that all light sources be eliminated from the room.  She stood for several minutes in silence while her eyes adjusted to the darkness.  She started off in the direction of the bed; seeking a nap that she hoped would eliminate the aching in her head.  She stripped off her uniform and folded it into a neat stack on the floor.  She crawled on the bed and closed her eyes; unfortunately her mind didn't switch off as easily.

"Paul Howorth" <palsh963@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=/\= Chimera – C – Main Engineering =/\=

It had been 6 days since Gustav arrived on the new Chimera to help
with the finishings, 6 long days with maybe 5 hours of sleep between
sifts, he needed everything to be perfect on the ship before he handed
over the proverbial keys to the Captain.

The transporters were sorted within the first two days, something
about faulty relays as well badly aligned targeting sensors, he let
the engineers work on that by themselves with minimum input from
himself, all he did with them was sign off on the requisition forms
and watch the testing making sure everything worked.

The Tractor beam was another matter altogether, when Commander
Ohmsford said that it didn't work he wasn't telling the whole truth,
the damned thing was still in it packing crates and needed to be
fitted from scratch, yet again Gustav let the engineers do most the
work themselves while he worked on the warp drive, it was slow going
at first but once the transporter teams had finished he reassigned
them to getting the tractor beam operational, that was successfully
tested just few hours ago with Gustav signing off on that.

Gustav's main concern though was the warp drive in the first 3 days of
working on it Guilder, Vah'toth and himself had only managed to bring
the top speed up to warp 7.6, still well below what was needed,
Commander Guilder had managed to get the warp field more than stable
for maximum warp by the problems seemed to lay with the drive itself.

By the 5th day Gustav was wiped and ready to through a hydrospanner at
the core when Vah'toth and Guilder approached him with readouts form
simulations and tests on the antimatter injectors as well as the
stability of the dilithium matrix, it turned out that there was an
inherent flaw in the injectors and the matrix was becoming unstable at
high warp.

The injectors were easy to fix but Vah'toth had other plans, she had
plans for some experimental injector assemblies with her that would
work well with the Chimera's drive system, Gustav gave the green light
to manufacture them and he helped install the new injectors.

While Gustav and lieutenant Vah'toth were working on the anti matter
injectors Guilder was busy removing the offending algorithms in the
program that monitored and compensated for power fluctuations within
the core, like Vah'toth Julian had been working on some experimental
warp software and she incorporated some of what she had been working
on into the new monitoring program, she also reinstalled uncorrupted
versions of the old algorithms just in case the new ones didn't work.

After all the work had been completed with a steaming mug of coffee
that was strong enough to use as paint stripper all three started a
new warp simulation inputting the data from the new software and
hardware that was installed.

Looking at the simulation readout on the warp drive Gustav was finally
satisfied that ship would be able to go at the speed that the ship
should go but the Chimera would also be able to reach that speed using
15% less power than it should this was done by Vah'toth incorporating
the new injector assembly deigns meant for the next generation of
starships, as well as the new algorithms that monitored the stability
of the dilithium matrix within the core.

Happy with the results Gustav contacted Bren over the comms.

[Chief Medical Officer's Office - SB 234: UNITY]

Rojac strode briskly into the infirmary and quickly looked
around. He had hurried to Security once he had heard the
news. Jardan was already on the case, leading a team of
officers on a deck by deck sweep, under the orders of the
station's security chief. After Rojac had reviewed the data
on the isolinear rod that the teams had recovered, he
pocketed it and made his way to the infrimary, where the
Commander had been sent.

He spotted a stressed Commander Summers on her way to her
office.

"Commander, do you have a minute?" He asked as he approached
her.

Rangi had recieved news of Ricks admission to the infirmary
from Scott who was on duty when the CEO had arrived. The
news was sketchy to say the least and a number of tests were
already taking place. Intent on seeing Rick and assessing
his condition herself, she paused her fast walk as a worried
looking Rojac came into view.

"Yes ofcourse." she replied.

"In your office please." He said, and followed her in. He
waited for the door to shut behind him before turning around
and pressing  the button that frosted the glass for privacy.
He produced the isolinear rod from his pocket when he turned
around and handed it to her. "You need to see this."

" Do I? " she asked, wishing he wouldnt delay her but
accepting the rod just the same. She didnt see a reason for
him to hand her such a thing but judging by his expression
it was serious information indeed. " What is it?" she asked
warily.

"It was found next to Rick's body when the crewman
discovered him." Rojac said from behind the chair. "It
documents the procedure that was performed on him in lurid
detail. I thought it might help in his treatment."

Rangi stared at Rojac, taking in what he said. " Who did it"
she asked "..I mean..why?" Both her tone and expression
showed that it was beyond her to think that Ricks condition
was inflicted deliberately.

Rojac sighed. "That's still under investigation, Commander.
And due to this beaing a breach of station security,
information is being held on a need-to-know basis. I'm
afraid I'm not at liberty to share the complete details." He
grabbed the back of the chair in front of him. "What I can
say, is that whoever did it knew what they were doing. And
they had been planning it for quite some time."

Rangi shook her head. "It's unbelievable." she said quietly
then looking at him asked " You think it's a Romulan act?
Why would they choose Rodgers of all people?"

"We can't tie it to the Romulans." Rojac replied flatly.
"But it still may still be a possibility." He neglected to

include the information that a scheduled shuttle had

diverted from it's projected flight path to the Omega system
and had taken a trajectory toward the Neutral Zone. When the
USS Valiant intercepted it, its crew was already gone and
its memory core was already wiped.

"I've had preliminary reports on his condition." she said
"...although that might answer alot of the questions we
have." she said looking at the rod and placing it on her
desk.

"He is as a baby with the capabilities of a three months

old. He is totally reliant on us for care." She shook her
head as she added:"I'm sorry Captain but I just cant

get to grips with what you're telling me. We thought it was
some neurological condition....but someone aboard this base
has done it."

"Someone that was aboard this base, it would appear." Rojac
said, looking up from the floor. "But that's beside the
matter, Commander. That part is in someone else's hands. We
need you to try and see if the information on that rod can
help get him back to normal."

"It will be the priority ofcourse." she replied glancing at
the object.

Rojac looked nervously at his chronometer. "I need to go,
Commander. The Commodore would be expecting a report."

"I'll keep you updated with our findings." she told him.
"Thankyou Captain."

Rojac nodded, and silently left the room leaving Rangi alone with the lisolinear rod, and the horrors it held tighly within.

***Security Office***

Tommy strode to the podium and looked around at the new faces. After recieving approval he had sent the requests out and they had been arriving at regular intervals. This was to be the first meeting of the new security detachment.

" Welcome to Starbase Unity. My name is Lt. JG Tom Jardan. I am the Chief of Security of the USS Chimera. I will be your Commanding officer. That is, after Captain Rojac and the XO. For most of you, this will be your first assignment." Tommy took a sip of water.

" My requirements are simple. Do your job to the best of your abilities. Follow the chain of command. Learn when you can. I am trusting that you want to be the best. If you do what is asked of you, you will achieve this. I will work to ensure that you all come to be the best that you can be. I have faith in you, or I would have not asked for you."

Tommy shifted slightly." Yes, it is true that we are at war. We will prevail. But our job is not just to be warriors, but to be protectors."
Tommy smiled." Fortunately, we have a chance now to get you some experience. Our job until the ship arrives is to protect the Erassian delegation. We are also helping the staff of this starbase. You will be paired with an experienced crewman to learn. Pay attention to everything they tell you."

Tommy leaned forward. " Again, I have every faith in you. Do me proud! Dismissed." He watched as the detachment came to attention, then left.{ They just might do}

After Bren had assigned tasks to both the lieutenants Gustav turned to
Reese and "asked how many engineers do you think you will need to help
you get the decks up and running?"

"I'm thinking I'll need at least twenty engineers." Jade said looking
through the decks it wasn't looking that bad, but it'll still take
some time.

"OK I'll send them to help anyway they can.... you mentioned as well
about helping decode Romulan messages faster like I said before I'm no
expert at that but if it has something to do with hard ware and
programming I'm sure I can help".

"Yes and no being able to break Romulan code faster would also help,
but I was thinking more of breaking a communications jamming." Jade
said, "here are some ideas that I was thinking of." Jade said handing
him a PADD.

"I think I can mange that" Gustav said referring to the engineers,
looking over the rough plans on the PADD Gustav saw the potential of
what Reese had planned and figured that he would be able to help,
"Well I think the plans are still a little vague at the moment from an
engineering standpoint but when you have some solid plans for me and
my engineers we'll be sure to make it a priority".

"Sounds good and thanks for your help. I'll have some more time to
work on it once we get the Chimera up and running." Jade said grinning
slightly. Jade then looked over the new list of the engineers and she
realized that she had a few ops specialists to run diagnostics after
the engineers get the EPS relays up and running.

"Anyway before I get started here I'm going to try and get the
replicators in the mess hall calibrated as I'm famished, your welcome
to join me if you want it should only take me about 10 minutes to get
at least one working properly?".

"Uh sure I could use some food before I get to work." Jade said
following Gustav.

Before going to the mess hall Gustav picked up an engineering kit as
well as the only piece of personal equipment that he managed to save
from the Chimera – B before it's destruction....his modified PADD that
links to replicators and is loaded with a bunch of decent recipes.

As soon as the two arrived at the mess hall Gustav headed to a
replicator and removed the service panel and started working on the
fine calibration's, asking Jade to pass him tools when he needed them,
after about 7 minutes he was done.

Gustav linked his PADD to the replicator and picked what he wanted,
some seafood gumbo from new Orleans as well as a cup off coffee made
with finely roasted Kenyan beans, looking back at Reese Gustav noticed
her giving him and the PADD a funny look "I modified this PADD when I
was at the academy, I was never a fan of there replicated food and I
didn't see the point of sitting for hours programing recipes into the
replicators every time I went somewhere new" he said explaining why he
had the PADD "feel free to use it but please don't tell everyone about
it" he added moving away from the replicator and heading towards a
table.

"Ah." Jade said taking the PADD and looking over the menu she hit a
few buttons ordering a small egg omelet and coffee. Jade sat there
eating in silence watching Gustav she used this tactic a lot when
dealing with new people she always felt that she could learn more
about them this way then by talking, but not everything.

=/\= Starbase 234:UNITY : Gustav's and Mimi's Temporary Quarters =/\=

Heading back to his quarters after being receiving his promotion and
new orders from Rojac the only thing on his mind was telling the most
important person to him, Mimi.

Over the last six months Mimi and Gustav had grown very close to one
another going on date after date until Mimi asked him to move in
together, this shocked Gustav as Mimi didn't take the lead on most
things but he agreed without thinking about it to much.

Mimi had the rest of the afternoon off and she was going to take
advantage of it.

Gustav was going at some pace when it dawned on him that she might not
be there, stopping half way he tapped his comm badge

+taps+ "Kroitzer to Ensign Hopeler"

She stretched to reach the combadge from her current location to
answer the call.

+taps+ "Yes"

+taps+ "Just wondering where you are, I need to talk to you"

+taps+ "In our quarters." splash!

{Oh, darn where'd that bar of soap go.}

Starting towards their quarters again Gustav carried on with the
conversation with Mimi.

+taps+ "What was that slash?" Kroitzer asked wondering what Mimi was up to.

With a sigh Mimi forgot the soap for the moment and stretched for the
combadge again.
+taps+ "Uummm.... nothing. Could we finish this when you get here?"

+taps+ "Sure thing love, Gustav out" Gustav said hurrying to the quarters.

Five minutes later he was at his quarters, he entered and upon not
seeing Mimi he gently called out her name "Mimi".

She had thought she heard her name and she called back, "In here,"
from the tub where she had finally located the soap and was trying to
wash her back.

Not really thinking about where the response came from Gustav went
into the bathroom where he say Mimi soaping herself up in the bath {I
wish we had a bath big enough for two}.

Kneeling down by the bath splashing the water abit Gustav started
talking "I've got to head to starbase Bragg tomorrow I'm not to sure
how long I'll be gone for".

"But.." she started and then fell silent as she wasn't sure what she
wanted to say just that she wanted to object. Feeling a bit
frustrated, she tightened her grip on the soap causing it to slip
through her fingers and toward Gustav.

"Ouch" Gustav said rubbing his forehead where the soap hit it, "Don't
worry it'll not be that long plus I'll be coming back in style, on a
stead if you will, I'm going to help finish the new Chimera" he added
with a smile on his face.

"That's not all, I've been promoted to Acting lieutenant JG" Gustav
showed Mimi the new bar on the collar of his tunic.

She raised up out of the water a bit saying, "congratulations!" She
then put her arms around his neck and plastered herself to him as she
gave him a kiss in celebration.

She raised up out of the water a bit saying, "congratulations!" She
then put her arms around his neck and plastered herself to him as she
gave him a kiss in celebration.

Not really caring how wet he was becoming he wrapped his arms around
Mimi and kissed her back saying afterwards "I figured we could go out
tonight to celebrate" {Even if the situation isn't ideal considering
Rick's condition}.

"Are you sure," she asked knowing that Gustav hadn't felt like doing
much but whatever Rick's last orders were since .... rick's accident.
She stepped out of the tub using Gustav's shoulders for balance and
reached for the towel behind his shoulder.

Still looking at the bath water contemplating what to say, Rojac's
words entered his mind "we need to keep moving, neither the universe
or this world is going to slow down for us to grieve." he said to Mimi
adding "Captain Rojac said this to me before I came to see you.....I
just seemed to put things into perspective.....well that and having a
beautiful woman there with me always helps".

Mimi blushed as she wrapped the towel around herself. "Captain Rojac
seems very wise... how long do I have to make myself as beautiful as
you suggest?"

Getting up from the floor and standing behind Mimi with his arms
around her and his head chin leaning on her right shoulder he said
with a smile "not long.......I think your pretty with you sleeping and
drool plastering your face to a pillow".

"You do realize there is a sofa and a bed in this place don't you and
you just painted a very unflattering picture." Mimi pulled out of his
embrace and started for the bedroom.

"You know I mean to me your beautiful no matter the situation or how
unflattering the picture maybe, you'll be the one I'll always want to
come home to" Gustav said following Mimi into the bedroom.

"And you're sure you be coming home this time," she asked as she
stopped suddenly and turned around to meet his gaze.

Acting dumb Gustav replied "Why wouldn't I be coming home, I have the
most beautiful woman in the world living with me don't I?"

She turned her head to the side but didn't break eye contact, "You
know what I meant." She turned away not want to think about all the
dark possibilities that just ran through her head.

Not wanting to continue this conversation Gustav went to the wardrobe
and pulled out to suites, his best James Bond style tux and a clown
costume that Mimi had convinced him to wear at a party for some of the
kids on the station including Rachel and Martin.

"Maybe I should have asked where we're going if those are what you're
deciding between." She looked at the couple of dresses that hung in
the closet as her thoughts ran wild.

"Well the circus for this one" Gustav said pointing to the clown
costume "or the best restaurant on the station if you pick this one"
nodding towards the tux.

"Take your pick" he said to Mimi.

Mimi walked over to the clown costume and ran some of the fabric
between her fingers. "That one" she said pointing to the tux at the
last minute.

Gustav smiled and was relived he didn't need to put on the clown outfit.

He undressed, showered and put on the tux and was ready only a little
after Mimi had finished getting ready.

Mimi had pulled on her little black dress and was looking at herself
in the mirror when Gustav asked if she was ready to go. She turned and
looked at him and smiled. She closed the distance between them and
began to straighten his bow tie, then she brushed some imaginary lint
from his shoulders as he put his arms around her waist. Looking up
into his eyes she said, "Be safe," and then their lips met in a
passionate kiss .

"I will as long as your there" was the only thing Gustav could say as
they both turned and left their quarters.

Athena looked at the bland walls of the borrowed counseling office as she was drumming her fingers.  She checked the time on the hideous device that hung on the wall.  {Where is Mr. Snacdook?  He's already 15 minutes late.}  She went to the replicator and got a chi tea latte.  Steam rose from the mug as she sat down, blowing on the top to cool it enough to drink.  Her derriere had barely touched the cushion of the shair when the chime rang.  "Come in."

The medical technician entered the office loooking a bit ragged.  Athena pointed to her own steaming mug and asked, "Can I get you something?"

Mr. Snacdok flopped into the chair opposite her, shaking his head.  She offered a sympathetic smile asking, "Rough day?"

"Aren't they all," was Rat'Tel's emotionless reply.

"Sometimes it can seem that way."  Athena set her mug on the stand beside her chair.  "Are things in your job getting any better," she asked remembering a couple of statements from his last counseling session.

"Yes," Rat'Tel started.  "Actually.... no they aren't."  He continued as his gaze seemed to be fixated on the one spot that would let him know when his time was over.  "I'm not being subjected to trying to figure out which body part belongs to who.  DO you know what that's like?"

Athena shook her head, but encouraged him to continue.

"I'll tell you what its was like.... there's this coppery smell that never... never seems to go away ... no matter how much you bathe ..... I smell it now..."

Athena sat more attentive and alert in her chair as he continued.

"... Bodies laid there some with 3 arms and 1 leg ... but none of the appendages belonged to the torso that laid there.... with it's intestines hanging all over..... sometimes even off the edge of the table..... And their eyes always staring.... always watching ..... every move...."

He fell silent for a few seconds.  Athena was still but uncomfortable; however, she gave him the time to  collect his thoughts.  His next question surprised her.

"They're watching now aren't they?"

"Who's watching now," Athena countered softly.

"You know who ... Are they listening too?"

"Mr. Snacdok," she started as she moved to the edge of her chair, "Who do you think is listening to and watching us?"

"DON'T PLAY GAMES WITH ME," he yelled.  "You KNOW who..... You're ONE of THEM, aren't you," he asked as he shot to his feet.

She stood as well taking a step away, "What are you talking about?"

He pointed toward the horrid timepiece and lunged at her as she tapped her combadge.

+taps+ "Co...Welling... to....Secur..."

She threw one punch after another as she tried to get security, but his fingers around her throat kept cutting her words short.  Finally getting her legs pulled up far enough, she kicked hard.. sending Rat'Tel staggering back a couple of steps, as she tapped her combadge and tried again.

+taps+ "I need security ... NOw!"

Athena was tackled as she sucked in a good breath of air in the next second.  They tumbled over the chair she had been sitting in.

THUD!   THUMP!

Her head smacked the wall and even though stars floated in front of her eyes; she reached up and found her mug.  She threw the still hot contents at him and then broke the mug when she hit him with it.

=/\= Several Minutes Later =/\=
"Counselor........ Counselor."

Athena opened her eyes slowly to find someone from security there.  He helped her to sit up and she surveyed the room.  The bland walls weren't so dull anymore for now there was a bright red spot on one of them.  And the hideous time keeper now hung by one thin cable.

"Counselor, let's get you to the infirmary."

=/\= SB 234 - Borrowed Counseling Office =/\=

Athena sat in the bland office waiting for commander Harbirght to arrive for his counseling session.  {He'll be on time unless he wants me to assume he has something to hide.  Could they have made this office any more boring in its decor?}  She drummed her fingers on the stand that sat between a couple of chairs.

Lernen floated up in his hoverchair and pressed the chime for the office.  Annoyingly he had run out of reasons for busying himself elsewhere.

At the sound of the chime she looked up and noted the time before saying, "Enter."  {At your own risk of being bored to death by plain white walls and colorless furniture as well.}  She rose from the chair she'd been sitting in so that she was standing to greet her incoming guest.

"Commander Wellington, looks like you picked a nice venue for proceedings...no windows, all white, it's like one of the interrogation rooms at SFI Headquarters with more soft furnishings."  Lernen said dryly as he floated in.

"I didn't pick it ... I was assigned to it... and you're late," Athena said in a matter of fact tone.  More pleasantly she asked, "Could I offer you a drink?"  She motioned to the replicator that was now supposed to be in working order.

"Tea if I can have it in some semi-acceptable form. IE no mugs or tasting like weak coffee." Lernen found a position in the room he could see all the necessary angles and stopped.

Athena nodded to his request and took a deep breath silently praying {Work this time damn it.}  She hummed a tune in her head as she waited finally both tea cups on saucers appeared.  {Right color.... hot... smells okay..}  Athena picked up one of the cups and sipped.  With a relieved sigh her shoulders relaxed.  {Finally ... it got one right.}  She placed her cup on the stand and handed the other Cup and saucer to Lernen.  "I hope this meets with your approval," she said knowing she couldn't care less.

Lernen took a tentative sip then placed the cup down.  He kept a poker face so she didn't know his exact thoughts for the foul tasting tea.

"So should we go right in for the routine questions or would you like a more original approach," she asked as she sat down.

"Well the original approach sounds interesting enough but its up to you to lead your own interrogation.  Choose whichever approach you see fit."  Lernen said evenly.

"Why do you assume its going to be an interrogation," she started.

"Because there's always certain information you want only you counselors always go for.  It's much the same in my line of work only we have more methods of retrieving that information."  Lernen stated.

"So, what information do you think I want," Athena asked as she took a sip of her tea.

"That would depend on what your goal is.  Now all I'm bothered about is being able to get back to work so please just get your questions out of the way."

"Do you like your job,"  She inquired but answered it as well, "obviously, as you can't wait to be back to it."  She set her cup back in the saucer, "So, let's move on to the next question.... What do you do for fun?"

Lernen pulled a face and looked at the hoverchair he was confined to before answering "I run marathons."

Athena held her composure and responded, "Do you win much?"

"Depends on how much faith you put in the rule book, I suppose.  What about you counselor?  What do you do for fun?" Lernen asked without showing a hint of interest.

"I'd tell you ... but I don't think it'd be good for your heart.  There are rules about not causing harm to patients," she quipped.  "Do you think it gives you respect to be so stern all the time   ... or are you just afraid of making more mistakes," she asked before she could stop herself.

"It gives me respect but it also gives me fear.  Besides considering I'm dying of a terminal illness and I'm not even sure which is more likely dying of what's currently killing me or dying by a Romulan or any other rival power's hand...would you expect me to have a sunny disposition?  Also which mistakes are you talking about? It's intreaguing to know that you understand so much about me when you don't even have clearance to look at my proper file." Lernen stared at her intently.

"Most people who use sternness and fear to order others around and gain respect do so because they've made mistakes... it was an educated guess, you could say," she started.  "I shouldn't have asked that way though... I'm not always politically correct... probably from all the time I used to spend with diplomats."  She sighed and looked at her cup for a moment, "No you don't have to have a sunny disposition but does having such a dismal one make things any better either?"

"It was once said that being a leader was simply a case of making your subordinates and allies fear you more than they fear your enemies.  If I'm this way it's because I have to be.  If I don't smile I don't have anything to smile for.  Does that answer your question?"  Lernen said bluntly.

"More than aptly.... but its a shame.... because I think you have a very wicked but funny sense of humor."

"Well unfortunately all there's room for at the moment is dark humour.  I may have heard something that might interest you although I don't know if you would necessarily find it comforting." Lernen said gravely.

Athena looked at him seriously, "And that would be?"

"Just over a month ago we received information that the Erassian Second Fleet engaged a Romulan Attack Force outside the Rios System.  The information was sketchy at best but from what we can tell it was roughly a stalemate with both sides coming off badly.  The Hermes and a few of the Destroyers haven't been seen publicly for some time."  Lernen paused to take some of the foul tea.

{Not the first time I've heard something like that.}  "I see," she said blandly, "Don't drink it.... its not really very good yet... needs more work."  She stood and took her own cup and saucer and had them recycled.

"Still I suppose there is one good indicator that General Ivanov still lives...Romulus and Remus are still on the map.  And one other reason I doubt he's dead...I helped train him."  With that Lernen left Athena to digest that piece of information and floated off out of the room.

Athena waited until she heard the door hiss close until she let the tears fall down her cheeks.

=/\= Aeran III - Sea of Tranquility =/\=
This was the first time in about six months that Athena had been anywhere other than on the base.  At least since her shopping expedition with Anya.  She stood on the shore looking out over the smooth surface of the water as the wind blew against her.  {I've been on a short leash.}  She let her thoughts flow threw her mind in whatever random order she wanted as her toes curled in the cooling white sand.  {I'm a white dove that yearns to fly but every time I spread my wings; I find that they have been clipped ... making flight impossible.}  The sun was beginning its decline in the afternoon sky as she let it warm her skin.

{Dr. Jacobs, chief counselor of the base, wants help... but reorganizes everything I do ... including reassigning all the evaluations.}  She uncurled her toes and then wiggled them in the sand enjoying the feel.  {I haven't seen Vik since...There hasn't even been a note for..}  She sighed and lifted her face to the sun.  {Do I believe the bits I've heard here and there.}  She bowed her head and ran a hand over her face before looking out over the water.  {Is he shacking up with the high-powered blonde official during the negotiations I've been banned from or is he missing in action trying to retrieve intel from a Romulan outpost .... or is that he's died in a border battle.}  She shook a little bit and fought back the tears that threatened to flow like a river feeding an ocean.

<<Flashbacks>>  Shooters Pub -  "Don't get me wrong Viktor's a good guy and I count him as one of a few good friends but he does have a tendency of going too far at times."  Anya shouted to the waitress "Tequila, a bottle of it and plenty of glasses, salt and lime."

"Here's to change," Athena said and downed the shot she was holding.

"Seriously though all of the people focusing on him will now focus on you as well.  Viktor's just helped kill a shit load of Romulans you don't think they'll not be looking for revenge do you?  People will try to get to him through you and people will try and get to you through him."

Charos III -  Besides as you're marrying Vik you do know there's going to be much more than just yours and his demands sitting at the negotiation table.  You have the Alliance to deal with for a start.  They'll want to turn the wedding into a national spectacle...hell they'd probably end up having you married on the steps of Parliament or in the Cathedral." Anya spouted as she finished off the dregs of her beer.

Anya's words had Athena finishing her drink an ordering another one.   "Even Generals are subject to the whims of politicians in the Alliance not to mention the time scales involved are all dependant on the level of enemy activity at the time.  Trust me he's smarter to not commit to a date at this point than to commit to a date and cancel because of enemy activity or a subversive plot,"  Anya stood and let Athena lead off.

SB 234 - "Well I hope you enjoyed your shopping trip Miss Xerxes.  Your flight clearance is temporarily restricted to local system only with escorts from the security department and Commander you shouldn't wander around by yourself your fiance wouldn't like you getting hurt."  With that Lernen turned and limped off.
"Maybe so but don't think even the sight of you naked would put a smile on his face.  His son was my former squadron CO and Lernen disowned him for not jumping to his tune and he didn't even show up for his funeral."  Anya scowled deeply.

Days later SB 234 - "Mimi, relax," Athena said afraid that she'd get jittery just from the strength of the other woman's emotions.  "I wanted to thank you for filling in for me when I couldn't get back to the ship and I've read your report and its satisfactory."

"Well, I'd been doing extra studies specifically on children when I was ...." the younger woman's words fell short when she tried to think about how she felt when the orders to report to the Chimera had been given to her.

"When your life was abruptly interrupted by with a new direction and challenge," Athena finished for her.  "The truth is I requested you from your academy scores and the studies you were doing.  I needed a counselor that could relate to children.... wasn't afraid to work with them and made them feel comfortable."  Athena sighed and took a couple sips of tea while that information sunk in.  "Believe it or not sometimes when working on a ship ...like the Chimera, you forget how to just be."   << End Flashbacks >>

Athena wiggled her toes some more burying them even further into the cooling sand.   {How long could this take...one ... five.... ten years?}  She took a deep cleansing breath of fresh air and let it out slowly. There was a rustling in the foliage behind her and her head whipped around only to see a small animal scurrying back to where it had come from.  {Damn... all those warnings from.... Everyone... are getting to me.}    She closed her eyes {Vik... where are you...}  She opened her eyes and focused on the mountain in the background on the other side of the water.

{Be positive} she encouraged herself as the breeze fluttered about her shoulders.   {Why do we have to have some big affair?  Deep breath in...... Don't think about it...... out slowly...}  She moved a bit closer to the water and more into the sun and sat down.  {IF ... I bothered to listen to any of them I'd .... I'd have to believe that.... that... Don't think that way} she tried to redirect her thoughts.   {Deep breath in....} she coached herself {out slowly.}  Her lips pursed and she let the a breath out slowly.

{Is he hurt.... no ... stop... he's fine...}  A small sigh shuttered out of her lungs and hung in the air. {MIA.... KIA.... or just disinterested... busy.... will I ever see Vik again... has he found someone else  ... it could explain why he hasn't contacted me at all in the last 3 months....or is he dead...Stop.... its what you believe.}  She took a deep breath in and focused on the mountains, then closed her eyes again taking a picture with her as she began to meditate.   {Picture the mountains ... cool and crisp.... breath in .... breath out.... again...}  She repeated the steps in her head until finally her breathing was slow and soft.  She was as still as the trees and her hair rustled like the leaves on the branches.

"So T'Vel tells me that you're coping very well. Has
anything been too taxing for you?"
Rangi handed a steaming cup of coffee to Scott as she posed
the question.

He thanked her and waited for her to sit down before he
replied:
" No..I've not had any problems..a bit tired now and then
but nothing to worry about."

"Mmmm.well...I'd prefer you to stay on light duties for the
time being." she replied."You know as well as I that its too
easy to overdo it."

He sipped the hot liquid and placed the cup carefully back
on its saucer then set it on the arm of his chair.
" I..err..I have something to ask you." he said and Rangi
looked at him enquiringly.
"What might that be?" she asked.

" I've been thinking about everything...I've had lots of
time to do that over the past six months." He flicked a
glimmer of a smile which she returned.
" Coming so close to dying, escaping death...it puts a new
prospective on everything..at least it has for me.
I used to think that I'd be CMO on a ship like Chimera,
running the sickbay and feeling fulfilled by it all but
thats no longer true...I want to do more than that."

Rangi waited for him to explain, her head tilted slightly to
one side as she listened to him.

" You know ofcourse about the new medcentres on Aeran 3..in
the outlying settlements at Braddock?"
Rangi gave a small nod.
"There's a Chief MO position opening there. I'd like to
have it."

"I see." Rangi said.
She knew about the medical facilities on the planet and
Starfleets part in their improvements.
"Are you sure about this?" she asked. " It would be a huge
change..planet based as opposed to a ship."

"It's what I'd like." he said "..and its not much more of a
change than a starbase is it?"

"Ok..I'll give you that." Rangi agreed reflecting his smile
but she grew serious as she asked:
"Scott...has this got something to do with the fact that the
settlers rescued you from the pod? Is that swaying your
thoughts?"

He shook his head. "Thats not the whole reason." he said. "
I just feel thats it the right time to make a change."

" Right." Rangi considered him for a few moments.
" I wont stand in your way." she said " If you're certain
its what you want. "

"It is." he replied nodding his head. " It's what I want
exactly"

"There's a meeting in a few days." Rangi told him. "
...between the Aeran medical council and the Starfleet
representitive...that's me." She smiled to him.
" I'll put your name forward and with your record and my
recommendation..well...I'd say the chances are looking good
for you."

Scotts face broke into a wide smile. " Thankyou." he said.

"There is one condition though." she added raising her hand
as though in warning. " You remain here until you're fully
recovered...agreed?"

"Agreed." Scott echoed, glad that she wasnt going to impose
restrictions. He got to his feet and looked down at her. "
Rangi... " he said. " Would it be out of place to hug a med
advisor?"

She laughed and shook her head. "No it wouldnt...in fact..."
she stood up "...its expected."

He stepped forward and clasped her in his arms then released
her a moment or two later. They smiled at each other,
friends and colleagues for a long time.

"Will you continue to act as CMO here then?" he asked.

"Mmm.well...I have an idea about that..." she said "...it's
something I've been considering for a while but I cant tell
you yet..not until I've spoken to the person concerned."

"So new beginnings all round then?" he suggested.

"Yes, you could say that." Rangi replied.
Scott held out his hand.
"Thankyou." he said simply.

She offered her hand in return, thinking he would shake it
but instead he lifted it and gently kissed her fingers in an
old fashioned act of chivalry.
He squeezed her hand and they exhanged a smile of lasting
friendship but in that moment, in another time, another
universe, mirrored a thousand and more times away where
things were already different, something else began.

She stretched to reach the combadge from her current location to
answer the call.

+taps+ "Yes"

+taps+ "Just wondering where you are, I need to talk to you"

+taps+ "In our quarters." splash!

{Oh, darn where'd that bar of soap go.}

Starting towards their quarters again Gustav carried on with the
conversation with Mimi.

+taps+ "What was that slash?" Kroitzer asked wondering what Mimi was up to.

With a sigh Mimi forgot the soap for the moment and stretched for the

+taps+ "Uummm.... nothing. Could we finish this when you get here?"

+taps+ "Sure thing love, Gustav out" Gustav said hurrying to the quarters.

Five minutes later he was at his quarters, he entered and upon not

She had thought she heard her name and she called back, "In here,"
from the tub where she had finally located the soap and was trying to
wash her back.

Not really thinking about where the response came from Gustav went
into the bathroom where he say Mimi soaping herself up in the bath {I
wish we had a bath big enough for two}.

Kneeling down by the bath splashing the water abit Gustav started
talking "I've got to head to starbase Bragg tomorrow I'm not to sure

"That's not all, I've been promoted to Acting lieutenant JG" Gustav
showed Mimi the new bar on the collar of his tunic.

She raised up out of the water a bit saying, "congratulations!" She
then put her arms around his neck and plastered herself to him as she
gave him a kiss in celebration.

Rangi glanced around the conference room as she entered,
quickly locating Shane who stood with his back turned to the
room, staring out through the large viewport. Beyond him
the usual activity outside the Starbase continued as the
little yellow 'worker bees' skimmed back and forth.

She took her place at the table, laying one padd in front of
her and acknowledging the other officers already present.
Their murmured talking ceased as Pakosii approached Shane
and quietly informed him that all officers were present at
which he turned immediately and took his place at the head
of the oval table glancing at each officer in turn.

"Let's begin with the meeting. Please start with the
reports I requested." he said. His eye settled on Vlimar who
got to his feet and began to speak.
After Terek and Chisulo had made their reports, it was
Rangis turn. She switched on the padd, stood up and cleared
her throat, scanning the company with a last look at Shane.

" Medical report of Fleet Casualties." she stated and with
reference to the padd now and then, read out a somewhat
depressing report, for even the battles that now counted as
victories had claimed many lives and left dozens with
severe injuries.
She listed Charos IV, Aeran III and the Khasi Pass
confrontation and ended with the Battle of Qualos.
" There were no survivors at all from the USS Svalinn or the
Tintagel.... " she said, a fact which was already known and
one that would go down in history as StarFleets blackest
day.
" ....so a total of 3321 crew were lost and 1156
casualties were treated, of whom 301 did not survive. "

She paused, glancing around the table once more.
"On a positive note." she said with a valiant effort to
sound so, " I'm pleased to report that Unitys infirmary is
almost complete..I'm assured it will be ..'in a day or so'.
To date we have two hundred and thirty six special forces
and starfleet crew under our care and fourty nine
civilians."
She waited for a moment then resumed her place, switching
off the padd and thinking it was one of the worst reports
she had ever had to make.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240811.20 Joint Duty Backlog, Capt. Cropa Rojac/MCapt. Anya Xerxes, CO/SCO

------------
Begin Log
------------

[Tactical Labratories - SB 234: UNITY]

Anya filled a packing crate with the junk of the previous occupant of her new office.  The new stand alone computer core was due to arrive in the next two days and the research and development staff were settling in, whilst her engineers were busy at work repairing the shuttle bay itself.  The area was now under high security due to the sensitivity of the project.  A noise behind Anya caused her to turn.

Rojac paused in the door way. "Lieutenant Xerxes. Just the person I was looking for."

"Captain, its a not so unexpected surprise to see you here.  I thought you had been reassigned to another ship."  Anya said wiping some of the dust off her hands.  "How can I help you today?"

"You can help me a great deal, Lieutenant." Rojac replied. he reached in his satchel and pulled out a small box. "But first things first." He tossed her the box. "You're up for promotion too, Captain."

"Thanks sir, a pay rise is always welcome."  Anya waited for the real reason as to why he was here.

"Congratualtions." Rojac said. "But that is not the only reason I'm here. I want you to command the Chimera-C's fighter squadron."

"The fact I would be bringing along the most advanced squadron in the Federation, just being a sweetner I suppose." Anya waited for her moment.

"If that's how you wish to look upon it, then go for it." Rojac replied.

"I have three demands I need before I can accept the position.  One-I not only run my Squadron but the support fighters as well and run the unit to my standards and no one elses.  Two-I pick the people who fly for me and wont take anyone who doesn't meet the cut, trust me on this one and I'll build you a squadron the fleet will envy and the Rommies fear.  Three-and this one is the one you're not going to like...I have final veto over launch/abort of fighter missions.  Before you say it, this isn't to undermine your authority, only to protect my people from being fed into the meat grinder for no decent reason.  Don't think it's cowardice either I'll willingly lead my people into hell and back but only if the ends justify the means, I respected your speciality abilities as a TAC officer on the Chimera - B and in return I hope you respect by abilities to lead and organise a squadron."  Anya met his gaze levelly waiting for his response.

Rojac furrowed his brow and crossed his arms infront of his chest. "It all sounded good until that last one, Ms. Xerxes. You having final veto on missions usurps the chain of command. You act as if I won't be taking you and your teams best interest, or your advice, into account." He sighed, and found a seat in the rather plain looking office. Sighing he placed his hands on his knees. "You know, Xerxes, I think I'm a pretty reasonable commander. I listen to the advice of my senior staff and I plan our course of action accordingly. Have I done something in the past to make you second guess my judgement?"

Anya sighed and dropped into the seat "I wouldn't say it was you personally.  As a TAC officer I read back through the situations that Chimera-B had faced before I came aboard and to be perfectly honest I wasn't impressed.  Granted you weren't the CO in those days but for many of them you were CTAC.  The use and tactical deployment of the fighters was well...lets face it piss poor but thats not to say the pilots weren't any good.  If there wasn't any good pilots in the Federation I wouldn't be designing this new fighter.  The truth is Starfleet just doesn't know how to use fighters either tactically or strategically.  Point in case...the USS Hindenburg - A, a Typhon Class Carrier has been guarding Starbase Bragg for over three months, now SB Bragg already has significant fighter capabilities so why would it need a carrier to defend it?  Why turn the Chimera - B and the Manticore into floating office blocks when they performed so well? Why was it Chimera - B only deployed fighters to attack other fighters or minor enemies?  So don't get me wrong sir, this isn't for the fact I want to disobey you but more for the fact if you are killled, replaced or immobilised I want to be sure that I can do my upmost to fufill my duty without being forced to defect like a certain General we both know and probably owe our lives to."

"Well, I certainly hope you don't think I will be expring soon." Rojac said. "But I think we can come to a compromise. On the new Chimera-C, your department will be run much like the old ODA squads used to be, or like anyother marine contigent on a fleet ship. You operate independently, under the jurisdiction of SSF Flight Operations Command. The only person you and your department answer to on the Chimera is me, and me only. You run your own show. I give you the mission, you decide how to handle it. Will that suffice, Captain?" Rojac steepled his fingers together at his lips upon the conclusion of his offer.

Anya nodded in agreement  "Good enough Sir.  I may also suggest plans of action to take out secondary targets but there is one more thing I would like to ask although its more of a favour.  In the Alliance from the lowest NCO to the Generals in charge of the fleets everyone is addressed by rank rather than honorifics with as much respect attatched as calling them sir.  Would there be any particular problem with me reverting back to that Sir?"

"If that is what makes you feel most comfortable, Captain, then I have no problem whatsoever." Rojac sighed, and pushed up off the armrests into a standing position. "I'm looking forward to our future service together, Captain Xerxes." He shouldered his satchel. "I'll leave you to your work now."

"Thank you Captain, I'll give you a squadron that'll make Romulan's everywhere leave skid marks on their underwear."  Anya waited till he was out of the office before resuming her clearout.

"I repeat. Shuttlecraft McGregor, power down engines and stand down. You are wanted for questioning. Comply or we will be forced to coerce you." Commander Verek, the vulcan commanding officer of the defiant class USS Valiant turned around to his tactical officer who shook her bajoran head. Verek nodded, singnalling for the junior grade lieutenant to cut the audio transmission.

"That is three attempts, captain." Verek's XO, Lieutenant Yal'ura reported. "Standard operating procedure calls for red alert, and demobilization of the target vessel."

Verek nodded. "Proceed." He ordered as he took to his seat at the center of the bridge.

Yal'ura raised her voice and began issuing orders. "Red Alert. Tactical arm all forward torpedoes, prioritize propulsion systems. Boarding party on stand-by. All hands battle stations." Yal'ura was an effective officer. She had risen through the operations ranks and was known for her high level of effeciency. She was beautiful, with a graceful betazoid figure from her mother's side, but she held the discipline of her father's vulcan heritage. Her enhanced empathic capabilities made it easy for her to delegate tasks to the Valiant's highly trained bridge crew.

"Target acquired." Lt JG Jinto Mina, the bajoran tactical chief reported. "Launch tubes one and two ready."

"Transporter Room one reports that the away team is green." The Bolian COps reported.

Verek nodded, soaking in the myriad of information pouring in from the room around him. He noticed Yal'uras eager stare. "Engage."

The usual chirp emantated from the Valiant's torpedo tubes and traveled faster han the two ships' warp velocities to strike at the McGregor's warp nacelles. A bright orange flash appeared on the viewscreen.

"Direct hit!" Jinto reported. "Massive deceleration. There's dropping out of warp."

"Helm!" Yal'ura ordered. "Take us about. Attack pattern Theta-nine-zero. Target shields and impulse."

"Aye." Came the andorian thaan's response.

The pulse's of orange light exploded from the pulse cannons and lit up the hull of the McGregor.

"Shields down!" Jinto reported.

Yal'ura tapped her com-badge. "Bridge to transporter room 1. Energize."

Verek watched the display on his chair as the distance between the Valiant and the ead-in-the-water McGregor quicly dwindled. This seemed almost too easy, he thought to himself.

"Away team aboard." The Operations Chief reported, holding a finger to his ear where he was monitoring their comm chatter. He looked dumbfounded, and turned back to face Commander Verek and Lieutenant Yal'ura. "The vessel's emtpy, sir."

Yal'ura looked rather taken aback. The betazoid emotional response overwheled her traditional vulcan training. Verek on the other hand remained stoic while Yal'ura turned her back and walked toward the back of the bridge in frustration. "Secure the craft. Send a forensics team and gather as much data as is possible. We will also need a record of their computer core and communications logs."

"Aye sir."

Verek turned to his deputy, who held an obvious visage of discontent. "Lieutenant, there is a chance we may still obtain our quarry. Do not admit defeat just yet." She only nodded in reply, his comments doing little to quell the fire inside her. "I am going to report our findings to UNITY. You have the conn."

And with that, Commander Verek disappeared intot he confines of his ready room.

<<OOC:This is a post time skip backlog set before the JL with Bren,
Reese and myself>>

[Main Engineering - SB 234: UNITY]

Captain Rojac walked through the hissing doors and marveled at the
site of the starbase's spacious Main Engineering deck. He looked
around at the throngs of sombre faces as the toiled away at their work
in a seeming stupor, devastated from the attack on their CEO, Rick
Rodgers.

Roajc had wanted to visit Maikai and Rachel, to see how they were
fairing, but he opted to send Commander Wellington instead. The
counselor would be better prepared for that kind of encounter, he told
himself. So instead Rojac went to visit Ensign Gustav Kroitzer, to
discuss business and get his mind off things.

He spotted the Ensign toiling away at one of the various tabletop
consoles in the center of the workspace.

It had only been a few hours since he and the other engineers and
officer had been told of the attack on Rick, although Gustav had only
known him for quite a short time he respected his CEO and appreciated
the the trust that Rick had shown him by giving him the
reproducibility's that he had in that short time, the only way Gustav
thought he could honor that trust was to work as hard as he could on
the last project that he was given by him, the cloaked sensor network.

Looking up from his console he noticed Captain Rojac approaching him,
I'm abit of a daze Gustav stood to attention and cracked off a salute
to Cropa.

"At ease, Ensign." Rojac told him. "How are you fairing?"

"OK under the circumstances sir" Gustav said to the Captain while
taking a more relaxed pose.

"That's good." He looked down to the floor and took in a deep
cleansing breath. "Ensign, I'm going to ask that you suspend
activities on the sensor network for now and turn them over to Lt
Tobok. I have booked passage for you and Lieutenant Reese to the Omega
system to help in the post-production of the Chimera-C and help in the
delivery."

Looking at Rojac almost like he had two heads Gustav wondered why the
sudden change in orders but he figured that there would be good reason
for them so he didn't interrupt Cropa.

"You will be reporting to a Commander Bren Ohmsford there. He's an old
friend, and can be trusted." Rojac looked around the room once more.
"I know you probably want to stay here, but we need to keep moving.
neither the universe or this world is going to slow down for us to
grieve."

"Aye sir" was all he could say to the Captain, he knew Rojac was right
but he still couldn't help but feel like he was betraying Rick
somehow.

"One more thing, Ensign." Rojac reached into his pocket and pulled out
a small silver box. "Rick was supposed to give you this."

Taking the box from Cropa Gustav opened it and saw a shiny new bar inside.

"You're being field commissioned to the rank of acting Lieutenant
Junior Grade. You application for the full rank is still pending, but
I didn't feel like waiting." Rojac said. "Your a good officer, and a
damn good engineer. I hope that one day you'll be in the Chief spot."

Cheering up a little from the Captains comments Gustav said "Thank you
sir I'll try my best, when do I leave".

"Your transport leaves tomorrow. Be on time." He handed the Lieutenant
a padd with the itinerary. "Don't be late. I don't want Commander
Ohmsford to think I'm letting my crew slack off."

"No fears there sir one thing I've never been accused of was being
late, lost yes but not late".

Roajc allowed himself to show a slight grin. "Good." He nodded and
took a deep breath. "As you were then, Lieutenant."

Gustav gave bid Rojac farewell and decided he would leave to pack for
the new Chimera asap, there was also someone he wanted to see before
he left.

"Paul Howorth" <palsh963@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=/\= Chimera – C – Main Engineering =/\=

Gustav made his way to main engineering's lower area on deck 16 on the
way there he was thinking how much easier to navigate the corridors
than the Chimera – B probably because it was so much larger than the
new ship, he looked at the new computer terminals on the side of the
corridor {why is it always beige they always put on the walls} as well
as the new carpet {hmm retro} , he was a little afraid that he might
ruin something new and shiny but it still didn't stop him from wanting
to get the ship prepared for his captain.

When he got to main engineering he tapped his comm badge and called
all available engineers to main engineering and started to brief them
on he was and the tasks that were the priorities that were set by
Commander Ohmsford.

"I'm glad you could all make it, I'd like to first introduce myself,
I'm the new Deputy CEO of the Chimera, Acting Lieutenant JG Gustav
Kroitzer, I've been sent here to help co-ordinate the teams trying to
the ship up to spec paying most attention to the warp drive,
transporters and tractor beam, about thirty of you will be assigned to
1st Lieutenant Jade Reese the Chief Operations Officer, she is here to
get the offline decks online" Gustav said in almost one long breath
not used to speaking to large crowds.

After he sent the selected engineers to meet with Reese Gustav
continued to address the 170 or so personnel that were left "I'm going
to split the rest of you into multiple groups 15 of you will be
working on the tractor beam, 15 of you will be working on getting the
transporters operational and 20 of you will be working with me getting
the warp drive up to speed, the remaining personnel will be put into 2
and 3 man teams working on the less important systems.....replicators,
personal terminals and the like but you will also be the back up if
any of the 3 first groups need any help".

After handing out the assignments Gustav got to work on the warp
drive, before giving the assignments out Gustav made sure that each of
the main teams had engineers that specialized in that particular field
and his team was no exception, he had 2 warp specialists, Cmdr Julian
Guilder and Lt Vah'toth.

According to their profiles that Gustav had a very quick look over,
Cmdr Guilder was a straight talking human woman from Ohio that
specialized in warp field theory and Lt Vah'toth was a Vulcan –
Klingon hybrid {not very common ridges and pointy ears} who excelled
at warp core design it also stated that while not able to suppress her
emotions like a Vulcan she does use the same techniques to keep her
Klingon temper at bay.

Walking over to the main engineering console in front of the warp core
Gustav pulled up the specs of the drive systems as well as the
readouts on the core it self during the Chimeras last warp test,
looking over the results he noticed the more obvious problems,
misaligned injectors, EPS conduits not channeling enough power as well
as a myriad of other minor problems. The main problems though was to
do with the warp field and the dilithium matrix, these tasks he
decided to give to Guilder and Vah'toth respectively.

Handing PADD's with all relevant data on it to Guilder and Vah'toth
Gustav said "I'm glad that you to are here , while I'm sure that the
engineers and myself would be able to solve all the problems with the
warp drive it would have probably taken us about 3 weeks to sort but
with you onboard I'm sure we can solve it far sooner".

Taking the PADD from Gustav Vah'toth looked over the amassed data and
in a cool almost Vulcan way said "Thank you for the welcome sir I'm
sure we can help you work out the kinks in the systems here".

"Well I can see what the main problem is right away" Guilder said
after being handed a PADD with the warp field data "The warp drive
looks like it was fitted by armatures" she added in short fashion.

Looking at Vah'toth Gustav stated "No sir's here please call me
Gustav, I don't think I'll ever get used to sir".

"As you please Gustav" Vah'toth said.

Looking to get going Gustav said "shall we get started then".

Almost in unison both Guilder and Vah'toth said "Yes Sir".

[Conference Room - SB 234: UNITY]

Chisulo stood with his hands behind his back, and nodded towards the previous officer as they took their seat. He cleared his throat for his report.

"Tactically speaking, I would estimate the starbase's readiness level to be at 75%." Chisulo reported. "Phaser banks and torpedo turrets are fully operational, but were are onyl stocked to 60% of capacity. I recommend designating Tactical Lab 2 as a torpedo manufacturing center to boost our supply, and to provide supplies for restocking other ships in the fleet."

"On future upgrades, Research and Development has sent me a list of experimental deflector programs and other weapons technology." Chisulo reached down to the embedded console infront of his chair on the table and keyed in a presentation file. Everyone's display began showing data on the new technologies.

"These upgrades would require the construction and distribution of six tactical deflectors across the station's habitat ring. Estimate dtime for completion at current available labor hours would be two to three weeks." He keyed in the next slide. "Deflector programs include a sensor blackout pulse, a shield reinforcement pulse, a shield disruptor pulse, and carboite defelctor."

"The tactical labs are also working on adapting other experimantal technolgies for starbase use, including point-defense phaser arrays, auto-targetting pulse phaser turrets, and rapid fire micro-torpedo turrets." Chisulo looked toward the empty Engineering seat, and then back toward the Commodore. "We are working with Engineering to adapt these weapons to the higher output of a starbase's power supply and increasing their effectiveness."

"On the strageic side of the war, I would put us at an alert level of orange." Chisulo keyed in another side displaying a map of the Federation/Erassian/Klingon/Romulan Border, which had since become known as the 'Four Corners'. "The excurion into the Khasazi Pass has been a success. Captain Joeleco was successful in the capture of the Romulan Listening post and research facility in the sector. Intelligence is currently conducting their investigation of the facility there, and I have placed Captain Brahmus of the Excalibur in command of the sector. As per our request, Standard Starfleet ships are now patrolling the sector and the Corps of Engineers is working on adapting the listening post for our use."

"In response to an increase in coded Romulan chatter, I recommend bolstering patrols in the Draken, Barradas, and Calder sectors, if only to discourage the Romulans from infilrating those areas. Their most probable target would be the Barradas sector, where we have three colonies and large supply of duranium."

"The Sensor outpost grid is at 82% completion. Commander Trzetrzelewska reports that the project will be completed by this time next week. There were some software errors on stations 045, 076, and 112, but we have since upgraded the software with a patch."

Placed his hands behind his back. "That would conclude my report. Are there any questions?" Chisulo waited for ny, and took his seat.

Tommy and Johnson were standing next to a small desk, looking at datapadds containing the service records of the new personnel expected to arrive shortly. So far, everything was looking good. except for a couple. Johnson spoke first. " I not so sure about these three, sir. The files say that they are experienced, but what's with the restricted part? And, if they are what these say they are, why transfer them?" Tommy nodded," Excellent questions, Chief. I checked out the restricted sections. They are discplinary records available only for my eyes. And they do not look pretty."

Captain Rojac passed through the doors as the sighed to the side with a hiss of air. He looked around briefly, and spotted his new Chief of Security, Tom Jardan, standing next to Master Chief Johnson, the new Master at Arms. He briskly made his way over to them.

"Hello gentlemen." Rojac greeted as he approached. "Do you two have a minute?"

" Tommy looked at the Captain and smiled, " Aye, sir. congradulations on your promotion. And thank you for keeping me on your crew, sir." Johnson likewise also came to attention and said," At your service, sir."

"How is our new security Department coming together, Lieutenant?" Rojac asked his new Chief of Security.

"First, everything is coming along better than I expected. We are getting first dibs on incoming new servicemembers sir. It is the Non-Coms I'm worried about. I have three records here from two ships for transfers. I do not like their records. It seems that a couple of Captains took the opportunity to get rid of their discplinary problems, and gave them to us. " Tommy handed over  the padds after entering his security code to access the restricted sections.

Rojac thumbed through the files, scratching his beards as he read. "Failure to appear for duty... conduct unbecoming... insubordination?" Rojac looked up with a slight smirk toward Jardan. "I know of at least one former non-com with that last a charge."

Rojac thought he heard a stifled chuckle from Chief Johnson.

Tommy blushed slightly," I'm not to worried about the insubordination. That I can handle. However... Failure to appear for duty? Not exactly my idea of a proper non-com." Tommy thought a moment." Also, I only have at this moment one other officer in my department. I need a couple of more to cover all shifts. Other than that, like I said, it's coming along nicely. We will be ready, sir."

"Choose wisely, Lieutenant. Good officers are a scarce find in times of war. Most of them are already taken." Rojac said. "Try and have the list at my desk by friday for approval. The new ship should be arrivign by next week's end."

"May I ask about Ensign Martin, sir? I was wondering if medical has had a chance to examine him?" Tommy was genuinly interested.

"Medical has cleared him. They found several subdural and neural implants, but intel has yet to crack them, or him for that matter." Rojac replied. "the last memo I ahd the priveledge to belive had him sent back to SFI HQ for interrogation and investigation. Major Varis in J.A.G. is in charge of the court martial investigations."

Tommy nodded. he was glad that they had been able to remove the implants, but was saddened to here that they were proceeding with the court-martial, especially in light of the lack thereof for servicemembers under the influence of Borg inplants.

"By the way," Rojac said, "I never formally thanked you for your work in ensign Martin's apprehension. In subordination or not, you're a good officer." He smirked beneath his beard at the last comment.

" Just doing my job, sir.And I will have my report ready in time." As Tommy finished Johnson added," Sir, except for what we said, the selections are ready. The hard part now will be getting them ready for departure when the ship arrives."

"I'm sure you two will do fine." Rojac turned half-way toward the door. "I'll talk to you later gentlemen. Be sure to send me the final roster for approval."

They both came to attention and saluted.

===== Main Conference room, Deck 2, SB 234 =====

Waiting for others to finnish their reports, Terek finally stood up to
give the update on the science department. He didn't have any bad news,
but there were some troubles and complications he needed to point out.
As usually feelign a bit uneasy he started:

"As far as I'm concerned, the science department runs rather smoothly.
Lieutenant Patel Rajesha assured me that hydroponics is operating at
full capacity, xenobiology under the command of doctor Colin Burr
reports no unusual findings. They sweeped the station for the usual
pests and no serious infestation has been found. Two larger nests of
errasian centipedes had been found and erradicated, otherwise the
station was clean.

Lieutenant Jones from astrometrics reports that her team managed to
increase the resolution of the long range sensors by 2.7 percent and is
currently updating our local starcharts. The radiation lab reports some
problems with the newly installed equipment, but lieutenant commander
Worik is working on the problem with the engineering crew and he said
that they should have it solved soon enough.

Last week, there was a malfunction in the arboretum radiation shield and
two sections died out completely. Luckily there were no crew present at
the time so no injuries. Doctor Dirok has been put in charge of the
restoration process.

Still, there is one large issue I need help with. During the battle
department suffered 86 casualties and those people hasn't been replaced
yet, so we are currently really undermanned. I've requested a new
personel transport, but got a reply of the kind that tells me to shut up
and wait, wrapped in sweet talk. And it has already been two months.

Otherwise, there are no more issues, thank you for your attention."

With that he sat back down and listened to the rest of the meeting.

the starbase. He was also organizing the new Chimera engineering
department.

Rick had taken a few former Chimera people with him to work on the
starbase. So, most of Tobok's roster consisted of new officers and
crewmen, fresh faced ensigns and teens just out of basic. Preparing
these young 'kids' was difficult without a starship to prepare them on.

So, they made regular use of the holosuites. They trained and trained
and trained some more.

Rick's staff on the starbase was already at full capacity, and things were
almost back to normal, so there wasn't that much real work for the
Chimera crew until their new ship arrived.

His deputy, acting Lieutenant (j.g.) Gustav Kroitzer, had been sent
ahead to inspect the new ship. Tobok already knew the specs inside and
out and deemed it logical to remain at Unity to work with the new
department.

Tobok noticed the captain approach.

"Captain," the vulcan said politely with a nod.
"Lieutenant." Rojac returned the gesture and refrained from the usual offer
of his hand, as Vulcans preferred not to make physical contact. "I see our
engineering department is shaping up well."

"As well as can be expected," Tobok stated. "Many are young and will only
gain knowledge through experience and proper training. Thus far, they
have met their goals according to expectations."
"Very well." Rojac nodded. "How is that project Commander Rodgers gave
you coming? Commander Trzetrzelewska reports it as going well."

"Indeed," Tobok said. "We should have all of the outposts in place by the
end of next week."
"Very good. I'm sure the Commodore will be pleased." Rojac replied. With
a nervous glance at his chronometer he looked back up. "Ah, I need to get
over to see Lieutenant Xerxes. I will catch up with you later Tobok."

Tobok respectfully nodded as Rojac walked away.

OOC>> The following may be considered dark by some, so be
advised. Also be advised that it is kinda long. :)

=Starbase 234 - Unity=

It was early afternoon and Rick had told Lieutenant Commander
Utley, his deputy, that he was going to surprise Mai and Rachel
and take the rest of the day off. The last six months had been
almost non-stop at times, and any time one could take off was
a rare commodity.

He walked into an area of the starbase that had no foot traffic.
That's when he thought he heard footsteps behind him. He
turned and look, but saw no one. He turned and continued to
walk. Moments later, he felt something heavy slam into the
back of his head.

Everything quickly went dark.

Rick slowly opened his eyes, sitting in a chair and feeling a
sharp pain throughout his head. When he attempted to move
his arms to rub his head, he realized that they were in some
sort of restraints. His waist and legs were also tied to the chair.
He struggled, but was unable to budge.

"Ah, good ... you are finally awake," Rick heard as a figure
approached. He recognized the man as a security crewman
who had served numerous shifts guarding the Chimera-B
engineering department. Rick had even made small talk with
this crewman on a couple of occasions.

Arnold. His name was Arnold something. Or maybe that was
his first name. He couldn't be certain. But whoever he was,
he had a smile on his face.

"What ... what's going on?" Rick asked, trying to ignore the
pain.

Just then, another person approached out of the darkness. This
man was also wearing a starfleet uniform ... this one medical
department blue. He, too, Rick recognized.

"I have looked forward to this day for a long time, commander,"
the security crewman said, then his smile turned into something
else. Something dark. "A long, long time. Scream if you want,
but no one will be able to hear you."

"What's this about?" Rick asked. "Why have you done this?
Why am I here?"

The security crewman let a sadistic grin cross his face.

"You're still under the assumption that I'm a starfleet crewman.
Let me assure you that I am not, though I have had to wear this
uniform for more than a year."

"Then who are you?" Rick asked.

"Let's just say I'm an old friend of the family," the crewman said.
"Perhaps you have heard of me. My real name is Hoack. Your
brother knows me well. Well enough to have destroyed my life."

'Hoack, Hoack ... where have I heard that name before,' Rick
thought.

Then he remembered. It must have been seen on his face as
Hoack smiled again.

"Good. It seems you do know who I am," Hoack said as he
knelt toward Rick, nodding. "I've gotten to know you real well
for the past year. I've followed you routines. I know quite a bit
about you, commander."

Rick remembered that Hoack was a Nenon, head of their special
forces, the Nex, and a man responsible for killing his father. That
resulted in sanctions and an embargo placed against the Nenons.
Trent had later suspected an assassination of a council member to
have originated from Nenon space.

When Trent went there to investigate, he learn that the Nenons
were secretly working with the Romulans. Trent was captured
and tortured by Hoack, but managed to escape and warned the
Federation of the Nenon-Romulan union. The Romulans, not
interested in confronting the Federation at the time, pulled out
of Nenon space, ending their dealings. The Nenon population
had no idea this was taking place and rallied against the
government who, in turn, exiled Hoack from Nenon space in
disgrace.

In an alternate universe, Hoack had managed to kill Rick. It
looked like this Hoack would accomplish them same thing here.
Rick knew that Nenons took out their revenge on family
members. That's why the Rick in that other universe had been
killed, even though Trent had been the target.

"So, you're going to kill me. Is that it?" Rick said, wondering
why they hadn't just done so already.

"No, commander. If I wanted you dead. I would have done so
a long time ago. Killing you would have been easy. No, I have
something else in mind. Something that I have been waiting
for the right moment to use."

Hoack nodded to the medical crewman, who returned to the
darkness.

"By the way, that's Duvoro, my most trusted ... as you would
say ... right-hand man. You are probably wondering how I look
like your Crewman Arnold? You see, there was a real Arnold,
but he's dead ... as is a medical specialist Hoff. We took their
identities with the help of a nice little gadget we acquired
from the Romulans. I won't bore you with the technicalities,
but lets just say that it's flaw is that it doesn't work with the
Romulan anatomy. Nenons, on the other hand ... well, as you
can tell, it works with amazing results. We are almost exact
copies. Even medical exams can not tell the difference.
Unfortunately, there's one side effect ... it's permanent."

Durvoro returned, rolling in a large device of some sort.

"No matter. In a moment, I will have gained my revenge
against your brother and returned an honor oath to my family
name."

"What ... you're going to torture me?" Rick said, laughing.

"No, no ... it's much more than that," Hoack said as he slid
his hand along the surface of the device. "This is something
that my people have been working on for years."

He removed an attachment from the device.

"We don't have a name for it, but such a device doesn't need
something so trivial as a name. What it does, though ... that's
what matters, is it not?"

He placed the attachment to Rick's head, right on top of his
left temple.

"No, Commander Rodgers, I'm not going to kill you. I'm
going to do much worse. I'm going to take away the one thing
that makes you who you are. And there's nothing your brother
can do about it."

He placed another attachment on top of Rick's right temple as
the engineer began to struggle.

"This takes away your memories, your knowledge. Everything
you have ever learned in your lifetime will be erased. It's a
slow process. Painful from what I've been told. But, in the
end, you will have the mind of an infant. You will know how
to breath, but that's about it."

Hoack took another attachment from the device. This one with
a long needle-like appendage. Rick's eyes widened at the sight
of it.

"Why?" Rick asked, worried.

"Your brother ruined me. He ruined my name. I was an
important figure among my people. Now, I am nothing thanks
to your brother!"

Rick struggled some more as Hoack moved behind Rick, then
inserted the needle-like appendage into the back of Rick's head
just below his skull. He screamed in pain as the needle was
inserted into the back of his brain.

"There, that should do it," Hoack said calmly.

"When my brother finds out about this, he will hunt you down
and ..."

"I'M COUNTING ON IT!" Hoack screamed. "But he won't find
me and you will be a living reminder ... a living reminder of
his inability to protect his family ... of how weak he truly is.
Revenge shall be mine!"

Hoack turned on the device and slowly turned a knob. The pain
in Rick's head increased. He tried to fight it. He tried to ... to
remember. But in time, he knew that he was forgetting things.
He was forgetting things he had learned as an engineer. But,
more importantly, he was forgetting personal things.

Memories he had with his brother.

Memories he had as a child.

Memories he had with Rachel ... with Mai.

Then he started to forget their names ... and names of all of those
he had met throughout his life.

His own name.

'I love you, Mai,' was his last thought of her as a tear streaked
down his face.

Then, their images began to fade from his mind.

Simple mathematics and vocabulary went.

Basic skills such as walking.

And the whole time, there was this pain ... both physical and
psychological. He tired to hold on to something, anything, but in
the end, it was of no use.

After about three hours, Hoack turned off the device. Rick just
sat, drooling, not even knowing how grateful he was that the pain
had ended.

Hoack removed the attachments and returned them to the device.
The Nenon then had his aide to remove the device. It would be
easily dismantled in minutes and taken off the station.

"Commander?" Hoack said.

Rick looked up at Hoack, only because he was reacting to the
man's voice.

"Good. Very good," Hoack said, crossing his arms, looking
into Rick's eyes.

Rick felt fear. He didn't know why. He didn't understand what
fear was, but he felt it. Hoack scanned Rick's brain with a
specialized medical tricorder that had been configured for
this purpose alone.

"Very good indeed," Hoack muttered.

After a few minutes ...

"The device is dismantled and has been transported to our ship,"
Duvoro said.

Hoack nodded.

"What about him?" Duvoro added, motioning to Rick.

"We will program the door to this room to open once we have
left the system and are on our way to Romulus. Someone should
have no trouble finding him."

Hoack took an isolinear rod he had used to record the whole
event and placed it on a table next to Rick. Hoack then turned
and the Nenons left the room, closing the door behind them.

All Rick could do was watch the door close, leaving him alone and
frightened.

Vlimar stood up. His double duty as Executive Officer and Strategic Operations Advisor made him have quite a few subject to report about. He looked though a PADD that his Aide just brought him and nodded at it.

"Since the last Romulan attack, 16 different introsion have been signal to our Department", he started, obviously talking as the Strategist. "Within those 16, 7 have been confirmed by a Source as being cloaked Romulan scouts, acting on Reconnaisance mission.", he added.

"However, since Commander Rogers activated our new sensor network, the intrusions reduced by 68%, which, as you may agree, is substancial. We avoided direct confrontation with the Romulans, escorting 2 civilian Romulan vessels outside the Federation space, within the Buffer zone.", he added, again.

"As you may know, I handle various sources within the different allegences. We have to assume they are doing the same, so, please, be discreet.", he concluded.

Vlimar grabbed another PADD, reviewing his notes.

"Starbase 234's major improvement are finished, but Cmdr Rogers and his team still have work to do. I ask you to accomodate them as much as it is possible. If you have any concerns regarding this, you can contact me and I will help you solve it.", he added, now speaking as the Executive Officer.

"Last issue. Informations are that the Romulan TalShiar chatter increased. I ask you to be on Yellow alert and report any suspecious activities. A request was sent by Commodore Guzman to SSF Command for ship assignment in our sector for a open time frame. We are still awaiting their decision.", he finished.

"Any questions?"

= Starbase Unity - Outer Ring - Civilian Medical Facitilies =

T'Vel lifted the medical tricorder up to scan Scott's cranial area, looking carefully at the readings as she moved the device slowly upwards.

"Are you still experiencing any headaches?" she asked as she continued.

"Some." he replied "... but nothing as bad as they were. I've not needed medication for a few days..well..a couple of days. "

T'Vel nodded as she continued the scan, proceeding down his neck to his spine. "Your vertebrae have healed well," she commented. "How is your motor coordination?"

" It's ..better." he said, though not sounding too convinced. " It takes me a while to evaluate some situations though...like the lifts for example...the doors open,
people go in and some come out and I need to decide who is going where" He frowned as he made the answer but T'vel made no comment on it.

"Please lie down and touch your right knee and right toe with the heel of your left foot," she instructed.

He settled back on the biobed, readied himself and did exactly as she asked.

T'Vel observed him and made mental notes. "Now please draw a figure eight in the air with both arms," she continued, not giving any of her observations.

"Both arms?" he asked giving her a quick glance at which she nodded. Once again he settled for a moment or two before lifting his arms. After a moments hesitation he drew the figures in the air then dropped his arms back at his sides and glanced at her again.

The Vulcan doctor now held out her hand towards Scott and pointed her index finger. "Follow the movement with your eyes," she instructed, quickly moving her finger about in front of him.

He watched the finger move past his face left, right and left before he lost sight of it.

"For the last test, please stand and balance on first the left leg, and then the right," she indicated.

Scott sat up,eased himself off the bed, steadied himself and raised his left foot, holding it off the floor for a few seconds before lowering it. T'Vel merely stood watching his feet when he looked at her so he began the second part of the exercise. This time the foot wasnt held quite as steadily and he lowered it more quickly.

"Well?.." he asked hopefully.

"Judging from your physical examination you are fit for light duty," T'Vel replied as she made a note on the padd she held. "However, I will schedule a short knowledge exam for you to test your competence and an appointment with the Starbase Counselor. If you pass the exam and the psychiatric evaluation, you may return to duty for 4 hours per day."

Scott nodded, knowing  that the other tests were essential but feeling pleased that T'Vel had given him the 'all clear' even if only for short shifts.

A young nurse popped her head into the exam room. "Excuse me for interrupting, Dr T'Vel, but your son is here and insisting to see you," she said in an apologetic tone.

"Please tell him that I am busy with a patient and will see him shortly," T'Vel said curtly, but just as she finished her sentence, the tall figure of a young Vulcan male appeared behind the nurse.

"Mother," he greeted her with a quick nod. His hair was somewhat unkempt and his demeanor not quite as stiff as a typical Vulcan's.

"Savek," T'Vel replied in a stern voice. "I am busy with a patient. Please wait until I am done, then I will speak with you."

Savek paused a moment then nodded, standing clear of the door and allowing the nurse to leave. The door closed again and T'Vel turned her attention back to Scott.

"I apologise for the interruption," she said.

Scott had been surprised by the interruption but more so by the fact that T'Vel had called the young man 'son'.

"Its ok.." he said. "...errr...but I didn't know you had a son."

"I have two children," T'Vel volunteered as she placed the padd down on a tray. She often didn't share personal information without being asked, but the last few months she had found herself often talking about her family to people she knew well. Vulcans were known to be secretive, but T'Vel had known Scott for a long time and considered him a friend; she didn't think it inappropriate to tell him "Savek is the eldest and my daughter, Paleris, is the youngest. They've lived on the starbase a long time."

Scott considered the information wondering how he could have known someone for so long yet hardly know them at all.

"My mate was Commander Sokas. He was the former Chief Medical Officer of Unity, killed during the battle," she said calmly.

"Ah...I'm sorry. " Scott said watching her making notes on the medpadd. "Look..T'Vel...I had no idea you had family here and I 'am' sorry. It must be..difficult."

"Thank you, Scott. I... appreciate your concern," she said, using his name for the first time in a long while. "It is challenging at times." Turning her attention back to the situation at hand, she said, "The test is complete, you are free to go."

"Ok..well..thankyou." It was obvious that the conversation was at an end so crossed the short distance to the door, opened it and went out. Savek was standing nearby.

"Hi" Scott said as he went passed.

<<OOC … first of my POST time skip logs, I'd like to ask
everyone to "phase" 6 months ahead and join the right
time …>>

====== Main Conference room, Deck 2, SB 234
======

Shane was standing with his back facing the large conference
table and looking through the large window frame into the
deep space. The view was different from the one he was used
on the Chimera … here is was filled with occasional
shuttles and runabouts, fighters on patrol and swarms of
work bees busy with repairs and upgrades. Even after half a
year after the battle of Aeran III …

The last several months were tiring for Shane. He was not
given the luxury to stay on SB 234 and command the station
and his task force … he rather "enjoyed" doing some
politician/diplomatic work.

It was quite an irony that Admiral Janeway awarded him with
the Archon award for his diplomatic work towards Erassian
Alliance … when the award would be more fitting for his
months long quarrel with Starfleet Admirals and Federation
council man and delegates regarding the Mutual Defence
Treaty between Federation and Erassian Alliance.

He left SB 234 just a few days after taking command over the
station, leaving her in the capable hands of Colonel
PontBrilliant. He and Captain Chisulo were in charge of
fleet operations and Captain Rojac was assigned to help
them.

For those several months, Shane was doing a type of work his
father (Ambassador John Guzman) would be proud of. Talking
and convincing, taking part on endless meetings, pulling
strings, asking for favors and doing them … that's the
world of a politician/military top brass.

Shane was not quite happy about the work he was doing, but
he knew that it was necessary to maintain the weak alliance
between Erassia and Federation and have the MDP signed.
Sure, council man Turan was supporting the treaty as well as
Generals Nerris & Bretam, Admiral Janeway and President
Spock … but that was where their work ended … it was
Shane who had to do the many runs to and fro … talking to
a lot of middle class politicians and beaurocrats.

Thinking about the bit battles of this war …

Charos IV – Starfleet/Alliance vs. Romulan Empire
(victory)

Aeran III - Starfleet/Alliance vs. Romulan Empire (victory)

Khasazi Pass Confrontation – Starfleet vs. Romulan Empire
(victory)

Battle of Qualos – Starfleet vs. Romulan Empire (defeat)

… he cursed the months wasted on Earth. If he would be
there, maybe the defeat @ Qualos would not happen, maybe
other battles and minor skirmishes would cost less lives.

Another point that grieved his heart was the fact that he
was only three times for a short visit @ SB 234 … during
all those long months … and the woman he loved and the son
he valued above his life were left most time alone …

The Mutual Defence Treaty was signed three days ago on Earth
with all the glory a big treaty deserved. As usual, there
was small thank given to those who worked hard for this
treaty … and all the praise went to the top dogs in
Federation and Alliance. Just after the ceremony, Shane
beamed on board the Qashqai, called all of his crew on board
and speeded with high warp to the Arean System.

Arrving two hours ago, Shane immediately called for a staff
meeting. He should see after Rangi & Martin first, but
Martin was in child care facility and Rangi busy with
medical, so he decided to go for the meeting.

He advised his aide, LT. Pakosii to call all the staff
members from SB 234 & Task Force. Some positions were held
by the same person (like DuPont was SB 234's XO and SSF
1st TF DCO), but some were not (like Ohmsford was SSF 1st TF
science advisor and Terek was SB 234's CSCiO). He left
detailed orders for reports he'd like to hear on the
meeting …

Engineering report of ships repair (damage inflicted during
the recent battles)

Medical report of fleet casualties

Tactical report of current state of war & ongoing operations

&

Engineering, Security&Tactical, Medical, Science reports of
SB 234

The room began to fill as more and more officers arrived @
the requested time. Shane took little notice of his staff
taking places and still looked out of the window. When
Pakosii whispered to him that everyone is present, Shane
seated himself in his seat as well and said …

"Let's begin with the meeting. Please start with the
reports I requested …"

[USS Chimera] SD: 240811.18 Joint Triple Backlog, Cmdr. Athena Wellington/Cmdr. Lernen Harbright/MCapt. Anya Xerxes, CCON/TFIA/ATAC

----------------
Begin Log
----------------

=/\= Starbase 234 - Main Shuttle Bay =/\=

Anya slowly guided the runabout into the main shuttle bay and maneuvered it to the designated landing area.  One of the people waiting on the shuttle caused Anya to cringe.  "Oh hell the old man is here to wreck the day" she said to Athena.

Athena perk up from her position to see who Anya was talking about.  "Don't worry about it," Athena said with far more confidence than she felt.

Anya merely shrugged and walked down the boarding ramp of the shuttle "Commander Harbright how pleasant of you to come and greet us especially considering your busy schedule."
Lernen scowled in return "Don't think thats going to cut it Xerxes.  Leaving the starbase is a breach of security."  He turned to Athena "And you must be Commander Wellington..."

"Yes", was the simple reply.
Lernen harumphed at the one word reply "You wouldn't think you two were considered to be high value targets would you just up and leaving the station without an armed escort."

"And you would assume that we aren't armed because..," Athena left the question hanging in the air.
Athena usually didn't carry weapons, but she had learned a couple of things from Viktor and she hadn't let Anya's warnings go unnoticed.  "It's your right to make an ass of yourself," she turned to Anya asking,  "Do you remember at the hospital about what they were saying about paranoia?"  Athena looked back at Harbright with a knife in her hand; fortunately for him the handle was facing him instead of the blade.

Anya certainly had not picked up on Athena carrying a blade and it wasn't something she would usually miss.  Judging by the look on Lernen's face he hadn't expected that either.  "Well there you go Commander armed to the teeth.  Oh by the way I ordered a dozen of the new Holden D5 Target Drones they should arrive in a week.  If your agents can take a break from bugging my quarters and looking through my panties drawer and check out the drones to make sure they're not loaded with spyware."
Athena moved her hand back and the blade disappeared.  She waited and watched the other commanders reactions.  At the corner of her eye she noticed a cadet that was beginning to unload the shuttle.

"Well I hope you enjoyed your shopping trip Miss Xerxes.  Your flight clearance is temporarily restricted to local system only with escorts from the security department and Commander you shouldn't wander around by yourself your fiance wouldn't like you getting hurt."  With that Lernen turned and limped off.

Anya hissed in annoyance.  "I think he expects me to live with one set of clothes for the rest of my life."

Athena let Harbright get another couple of steps further away before adding to the conversation, "I'm sure he wouldn't want me running around the base naked either but I could have obliged."
Maybe so but don't think even the sight of you naked would put a smile on his face.  His son was my former squadron CO and Lernen disowned him for not jumping to his tune and he didn't even show up for his funeral."  Anya scowled deeply.

"Commander Harbright," Athena called.  She waited until he turned around before continuing, "I'm scheduled to give you an evaluation... would now be a good time?"  The cadet went to hand one of the bags to Athena, but his face turned red as he dropped it and several matching bra and panty sets fell to the floor.  He looked apologetic and Athena shooed him away as she bent to pick them up.  The shirt she'd been wearing inched up her thighs as she bent to pick the items up herself as she waited for the commander's answer.  Athena commented to Anya loud enough for the other commander to hear, "Its a shame I can't wear any of these under that ivory dress."  She winked at Anya letting her know that she was wasting time until she got an answer.

Lernen didn't even bother turning around but the cadet was turning a deeper shade of beetroot.  "Careful kid that's dangerous territory your minds crossing into."  Anya warned.  You didn't need to be a telepath to figure out what was going on in the little brain there.

Athena flashed the young cadet a smile and softly said, "I'd listen to her if I were you."  She then turned back finding that Harbright had stopped but hadn't bothered to turn around or answered her question.  "Commander.... I'm waiting."

"Next Thursday 1400." Lernen answered briskly then limped off.

"Looks like you got a result there...do us all a favour and send him off to an asylum in deepest darkest Vulcan." Anya said
Athena held back her laughter until the commander was out of hearing range.  "I'll see what I can do ... within the scope of my job."

Terek Weranis <annemion@seznam.cz> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

===== Near med centre * SB Unity =====

Rangi was returning to her duty at the med. centre, still
thinking over her recent evaluation meeting with Stephen
Jacobs.
She had had many evalutions in her time, carried out by a
number of counsellors but never had she had one quite like
that before.
Still puzzling over the events, she drew closer to one of
the observation bays that lined the corridor. Her steps
slowed as she saw a lone figure standing staring out into
space and thinking that she recognised him said tentatively:
" Terek?...Terek is it you?"

Young Bajoran was staring into the vastness of the space
deep in thoughts and grief.
The alcohol just blurred things a little, smoothed the
edges,
but now it was all back
and he could only think about the agrgument he had with
Alex, before he left. {Why
was I so stupid... I'm such an idiot. This is all my fault
and I haven't even told
her goodbye and that I love her.} Like from a great
distance, he heard his name so he
forced his thoughts to focus to present and looked over his
shoulder to see a
familiar friendly face.

"Rangi! Yes, it's me. I'm glad to see you're OK." he said
with the weak
smile on his lips. He was really glad to see that she has
come to no harm.
"How's Shane? And Martin? Are everyone all right?"

Rangi moved towards him, a happy smile on her face, pleased
to see an old friend.
" Thankyou, yes they're both well " she replied but caught
back the words that would
have followed. Her smile faded.
"And you?" she asked. "...how are things?"

"Alex is dead." he paused as he didn't know what else to
say. "She was
one of the casualties on the Chimera. I've been trying to
get some information from
morgue if there is her body and if they have notified her
parents, but they told me
to wait." he shook his head and looked outside of the
viewport again blinking
quickly as he felt tears trying to make its way to the
surface. After a few moments
when he knew that his voice won't shake he continued:
"And I didn't even say goodbye before my LOA... how can I go
to her parents and
" he left the sentence unfinished and threw his hands
apart in desperate
gesture.

Rangi touched gently laid her hand on his arm.
" Please.." she said quietly "...try not to get
upset....come and sit down..or better yet, come to my
office. I think I can help you."

Confused, he followed her along the corridor until
they arrived at the slightly cramped office.
"The thing is,I've never done this before... I mean
arranging for a funeral. I was going to perform
a Bajoran death chant of course to make sure her spirit gets
to the Prophets, but I'm
not sure if I can even do that... shall I ask her parents if
they agree?" He
certainly was confused and trying to keep his mind busy with
insignifficant things
that kept him going.

" Sit down." she said as they entered the room and as he
seated
himself on a chair, she perched on the edge of her desk a
short distance in
front of him.

"I'm sure there are people here who can help you with
Bajoran rituals." she said. " ...we can find that out if you
like."

"No, it's OK. I know how to perform the ritual, I'll just
get in touch with some
Vedek that would guide me through it. But I really want to
know if there is her
body."

"Yes, there is. " Rangi replied. "She's in the morgue
waiting until we can assure safe passage home for her.
If you want, I can arrange for you to see her." Rangi
said.

"We're gonna need her body moved to the temple to perform
the ritual. I'll have
to arrange everything at first." He was glad that at least
Alex's body has been
found.

"Do the doctors know how did she die?"

" Yes we do, in fact all the details are known because we
have the flight recorder from the escape pod..
Going by the time of launch, it was one of the last pods to
leave. There were three people inside..Alex, Scott
Fisher..one of my AMO's and Phillip Jenkinson..a member of
Alex's xenobiology crew.
The pod came under fire from a Romulan ship and took an
indirect hit as it began to enter Aerans atmosphere.
It came down miles off course in a shallow sea...actually
its a huge inland lake but the settlers have named it the
Sea of Tranquillity...after the area on the Moon?
Anyway...some saw the pod come down and ran to try to
find it. It was partially submerged in mud but they got to
it before it sank and found one person barely alive...that
was Scott..... the others had died on impact."

"So they made it out, but she didn't survive the reentry to
the atmosphere...
that's really ironic." He shook his head thinking that it
really is a silly, to
survive the destruction of the ship but being killed in an
escape pod. "At least
one survived though." he sighed "Has her family been
notified?"

" Her family have been informed but I dont know if Captain
Rojac has written to them personally yet. I can find that
out too if you like.
Terek...I'm so sorry...I know you and she were very close."

"It doesn't matter, I'll use my subspace time to contact
them and explain them
personaly. Yes we were close, but not the last few months I
was on Chimera. We argued
a lot and when I told her that I need some time for
soulsearching, she disagreed...
and not expressed herself with the nice words."

He got up and paced around Rangi's office for a while. "You
know, maybe it
wasn't meant to be. I loved Alex, but this was probably the
way Prophets laid out for
us. I have to accept it and move on. So I can't delay it
anymore. I have to call her
parents and arrange for the ritual as soon as possible and
then get back to work,
keep my mind busy."

Rangi watched the pacing figure until he came to standstill
beside her.
She understood the need to keep busy but knew too that
everyone needs time to grieve.

"Let me know when your arrangements have been made and I'll
organise the moving of her body.
Terek..." He raised his head and she continued "....give
yourself some time won't you?"

"I will, thank you very much for your help. I''m sure this will help me to 'cope' with it."
With that, he bowed a little and headed from the office.

[USS Chimera] SD 240808.18 Personal Log, Admiral Janeway (JDC CO)

= Geneva, European Union - Earth =

Admiral Kathryn Janeway sat at her antique oak wood desk and reviewed the information on the padd in front of her. It was almost midnight and for a change she was having an early night, which meant getting to bed before 2AM. Outside a storm was raging, sending rain down from the clouds in torrents. An empty cup of coffee stood on the desk next to her computer terminal, and next to it a stack of several padds leaned threateningly to one side like the legendary Tower of Pisa... before it toppled over during World War III.

The padd she was reading - and the last one for the evening, she'd promised Mark - was concerning the SSF's 1st Task Force Commanding Officer, Commodore Shane Guzman. His actions regarding sending aid to the Erassians before the war broke out had cost him his position and nearly his rank. The order to relieve Guzman had come from Admiral Jefferson, Janeway's deputy, and Kathryn had to jump to stop the order in its tracks before it did more damage than good.

Jefferson didn't like having his orders disobeyed, and his ego sometimes got the better of him. He and Janeway didn't often see eye to eye, but he was a brilliant tactician and had served in Starfleet for almost 21 years. A feared and respected man, no one dared question his orders, except Janeway herself.

And considering Guzman practically single-handedly saved the Federation from a Romulan invasion at Aeran III, Janeway had no choice but to retract Jefferson's reprimand. At least that was the reason she gave him. She couldn't very well tell him to his face it was because he was behaving like a hothead.

With a letter to General Kira, Janeway had personally authorised Guzman's reinstatement as 1st Task Force CO and approved the proposed plan to convert SB 234 into the new headquarters for the SSF's 1st Task Force. An addition, she awarded him the Archon Award with Solare Flare for his negotiations with the Erassian Alliance. Who would have known that his history with the notorious General Ivanov would have proved to be beneficial in the end?

Since the Battle of Aeran III, not everything had gone according to plan. The Romulans had tried their luck again at the Khasazi Pass, but a small task force of ships led by Captain Chisulo had managed to head them off and push them back through the Neutral Zone.

An inevitable defeat came at the Qualor System, pushing Uhnari's fleet of seven ships back into a retreat and capturing the system. But the Qualor System was a much less strategic location than the Aeran System. There were no starbases at Qualor and no inhabited colonies near it. What was at Qualor, however, was a thriving Stone Age civilisation on Qualor II which Janeway hoped the Romulans would leave alone, but there was little chance of that.

"Are you coming to bed?"

Kathryn looked up at Mark who was standing in the doorway to her study. "Yes," she replied with a smile and put the padd down on her desk. "For one night the war can wait."

OOC: Thanks for the JL guys! :)

= USS Chimera-C - SSF Fleet Yards - Omega System =

Commander Bren Ohmsford looked around Main Engineering of the Century Class ship that was
the brand new USS Chimera NCC 96899-C. It seemed like not to long ago
the brand new Chimera Class USS Chimera NX 96899-B was launched, but
SSF ships seemed to have a high turnover rate, especially ones with
the name Chimera.

The ship had been rushed into post-production since the start of the
war, and as a result many of her systems were still not working
properly and not fully integrated. Non-essential decks were still
operating without power and internal sensors and transporters were
non-existent. Several modules had to be fitted still and the warp
drive needed to brought up to spec.

With the project nearing completion, new personnel had been arriving for the ship and Bren was glad to hear that some
of the Chimera's personnel were being sent to Bragg and were going to help
with the post-production process. There was nothing like getting to
know your own ship by helping to build it.

"Transporter Room 5 to Commander Ohmsford," the voice of the
transporter operated spoke through his chirruping combadge.

"Ohmsford here," he replied with a tap.

"Lieutenants Reese and Kroitzer have arrived, sir."

"Ah, excellent," he replied with a grin. "Please send them to Main Engineering."

= Starbase Bragg =

Gustav had been waiting for about an hour to transfer over to the new
Chimera in that hour Gustav had met up with Jade Reese and had was
busy going over the specs and documentation on the new Century class
ship most of which was classified but as the new DCEO of the Chimera
he was cleared to view it, when the call came in he couldn't be
happier.

Jade was going over the operation system when the DCEO walked up,
"Greetings ready to head over to the Chimera?" Jade asked Gustav.

"Any time, I'm sick of being stuck on station, I can't await to start
work on the new ship" Gustav said a little impatient to get going.

"Also once we finish with dealing with the new Chimera I would like to
talk to you about an idea have of dealing with communication jamming
and how to maybe break it more easily then it is right now?" Jade
asked knowing that a engineer perspective could help her out.

"To be honest comm jamming isn't my specialty but I'll help anyway I
can" Gustav responded while stepping onto the transporter pad and
looked at the Ensign behind the controls and gave the orders to
energize.

= USS Chimera-C - SSF Fleet Yards - Omega System =

Stepping off the Chimera's transporter pad both the Lieutenants were
sent to engineering where they were greeted by Commander Ohmsford.

"Lieutenants, welcome to Main Engineering," Bren welcomed the two
officers as they approached him beside the warp core, extending his
hand to greet them. "Mr Kroitzer, you'll be spending a lot of time in
this room so I hope you like the decor."

"Far more spacious than I thought it would be" Kroitzer said a little
surprised at the amount of space there was in engineering, by no means
was it as large as the previous Chimera but it was still impressive.

Grinning broadly, Bren said, "I hope you've both gone over the specs
you were sent. I will be putting you both in charge of teams. There
are about 200 free personnel onboard which you can assign as you see
fit. More should be arriving to the Starbase shortly, and I'm sure
Colonel PontBrillant can assign you some more authorized temporary
personnel if you send in a request. Commander Rodgers has his hand
full with the station, but he might also be stopping by."

Rubbing his hands together Gustav said "Excellent, if he does stop by
I'll be sure to get a hydrospanner in  his hand asap"

" Jade smiled always enjoying getting her hands dirty working on
something, ""sounds good sir." Jade said pulling the specs up for the
new Chimera on her tablet.

"Lieutenant Reese," Bren said, handing her a padd. "Your priority is
getting the offline decks online. The EPS relays need to be properly
connected and the internal sensors calibrated."

"Alright." Jade said taking the PADD and looking over the list of
personnel she had to use to get the offline decks online.

"Lieutenant Kroitzer, Engineering is yours," Bren said, turning to
Gustav. "At the moment, she can't go faster than Warp 4.2. It's up to you to
get her running up to spec, otherwise it'll take us a month to get to Unity. I'm sure the captain will want to do a
warp flight test when he gets onboard. Transporters are also
non-operational... oh yes, and the tractor beam isn't working. Any
questions?"

"Just one, are the replicators operational?" Gustav asked with a
slight grin on his face.

"Only in the main mess," Bren said with a slight grimace. "But they're not properly calibrated. We don't have a cook onboard yet and I made the mistake of trying the replicated coffee. I wouldn't recommend it."

[USS Chimera] SD: 240811.17 Joint Personal Log LtCdr.MaiKai Rodgers,CMO & Cdr.Rick Rodgers,CEO

=Shooter's Pub=
=Starbase 234=

"...so, you haven't told MaiKai about this, have you?" Trant asked as he took
a swig from his glass of vodka.

Rick shook his head.

"And why not?"

"I just don't know how'll she will respond," Rick said, drink a glass of ginger ale.

Trent just smiles, "You accepted the job with task force and didn't even discuss
it with your wife. Boy, you screwed up."

"I didn't accept anything ... yet."

"But you're going to," Trent said.

Rick shrugged, then nodded, "I think it's probably for the best."

Trent laughed, finishing his vodka then standing.

"Try explaning that to MaiKai," Trent said, tossing down a couple of slips of latinum.
"I'd like to watch that myself, but with our warp core ready, we need to return to
Earth for a long overdue overhaul and upgrades."

Rick stood.

"You don't want to say goodbye to Mai and Rachel?"

Trent shook his head, "You know me and goodbyes ... I don't do goodbyes well. Give
them my best wishes."

"Give Sarah and Annie my best wishes," Rick said.

After shaking his brother's hand, Rick watched as Trent exited the pub. Rick then
followed and went to the temporary quarters he and Mai were sharing.

He saw Mai, Rachel and Mimi playing some sort of game. Rick couldn't help but to
notice how much Mimi was becoming a part of the family. He kissed Rachel, then Mai
before whispering in his wife's ear.

"Sweetheart, can I talk to you alone for a moment," Rick whispered.

Mai nodded.  "Rachel stay here and play with Mimi, okay?" the child nodded.  Mai got
up and was followed by Rick.

They went to their bedroom and sat on the foot of the bed. He held her hands in his.

"Mai, Commodore Guzman has offered me the task force's engineering adviser's job as
well as the chief engineer's position on the Starbase," Rick was to the point.

MaiKai nodded.  She knew her husband would come with an alternative where they could
stay and be with Rachel.

"I think it would be best for Rachel. They have good schools and other children here.
Martin will also be here. She will have to be here, or we'll have to send her to Earth,"
Rick looked into Mai's eyes. "What do you think?"

"It sounds great," Mai gave a weak smile.  She knew this is what was best for Rachel,
however she couldn't help, but think that she had just gotten accustomed to being a CMO
and know she would probably have to take a lower ranking job.  Not exactly what Mai
wanted, but she would do anything to stay with Rick and Rachel.

Rick knew that Mai was trying to be brave. He wanted her to be happy. It was more
important for Rick that she was happy than his own happiness.

"What do you want, sweetheart? What do you want to do?" Rick asked.

"It sounds fine, Rick," MaiKai paused for a moment, "It's what's best for Rachel".  Mai
knew she was being cut and dry, but there really was no need for an argument or of
bringing up issues when it would probably result in the same outcome anyway.

Mai noticed the look that Rick was giving her, "Really.  It'll be okay," she kissed him on the
cheek.

Rick kissed her back, this time on the lips. He then looked into her eyes, running his hand
through her hair.

"In the morning, I'll tell the commodore that I'll take the job," Rick said softly as he then
kissed her again.

All Mai could think at this point was what she was going to have to do.  Letting it all be pushed aside she continued to kiss her loving husband.

=/\= Begin Log =/\=
Athena had put in the proper paper work to clear the passage for her and Anya to go to Charos III.  At least the documents all looked proper and official and above question.  The flight there was uneventful and the landing went smooth.  As the pair walked to their first destination, they received a few interested looks.  Whether it was Anya's outfit of the extremely form fitting Erassian flight suit or Athena's which was just one of Vik's longer shirts belted at her waist was anyone's guess.

Anya guided them through the maze of small streets and passageways which made up the city of Tresanburg.  "It's lucky I still remember my way around here, we only got shore leave here twice during the Solrin War."

The tour of the hospital was boring and thankfully short.  As they were walking out Athena turned to Anya, saying, "I'm a bit parched... How about you?"

Anya grinned "Thought you'd never ask.  The runabout's computer already has the autopilot pre-programmed for the return journey.  There's a boulevard with plenty of decent eats and drinks which don't break the bank.  There's a few shops there too which are well worth a look."

They stopped at a restaurant and had a quick bite of something to eat and two bottles of champagne to celebrate.  A quick stop at a bar for a good luck shot and they were on their way after Anya made a purchase.

Anya picked up a cute light blue top as well as a dark purple sleeveless top in a shimmering material cut seductively down the back to reveal more of her spots than was usual.  She also picked up a few pairs of tight fitting boot cut jeans in different shades of blue and black.

It was a exotic looking boutique that Athena went into first.  She was drawn further into the store by the vivid colors.  She ran her hand along a rack and pulled out a dress that was a bright shade of indigo.  The color of the dress popped the shade of her eyes and the off the shoulder sleeves were just a thin band.

"Nice. I'm sure Vik would approve but then again the way he is with you; you could wear a burlap sack and he would approve.  I, however, am a harder audience to please and I definitely approve." Anya gave her thoughts freely.

Athena bought the dress and several tops in a variety of blues, greens and purples.  She also found a pair of black velvet and a pair of black leather pants that she purchased in addition to a couple pairs of jeans.  A shoe shop caught her attention next and Athena bought sensible shoes for climbing and running and duty.  A then a pair of stilettos that were black and strappy.  And a couple of pairs of boots.

Anya also bought herself a couple of pairs of boots and a decent pair of running trainers.  "I'm thinking this is beginning to get thirsty work, care for some more liquid refreshment?"

Athena watched the ring on her finger flash in the sunlight as they enjoyed a bit of refreshment at a colorful pub.

Anya sat just drinking a simple bottled beer "We could take a look at wedding dresses too if you want?"

"Betazoids don't typically wear wedding dresses,"  Athena pointed out as she drank a spicy little drink called 'hot sex'.

"I know but humans do and you're half human right?  Besides as you're marrying Vik you do know there's going to be much more than just yours and his demands sitting at the negotiation table.

She muttered to herself, "probably one of the many reasons he won't discuss a date."  She gave the waitress a smile as her new drink was placed in front of her.   She quickly downed the brandy laced drink and said, "OK, lets go look at wedding dresses."

"Well I wouldn't blame him for that.  Even Generals are subject to the whims of politicians in the Alliance not to mention the time scales involved are all dependant on the level of enemy activity at the time.  Trust me he's smarter to not commit to a date at this point than to commit to a date and cancel because of enemy activity or a subversive plot.  Trust me I know what vagaries in the Fleet are like." Anya stood and let Athena lead off.

There were words that floated around in Athena's head that could defeat every excuse mentioned but she said nothing.  She came to a halt in front of a shop that had one dress that took up the whole display window.  Athena raised an eyebrow and looked at Anya, "That's a lot of dress."

"Well considering that you could probably fit the whole orchestra in there as well...yeah." Anya said quietly.

Athena shrugged and went in keeping an open mind.  The inside was very surprising as the dresses seemed to be of varying volumes of material.  She passed a dress that she was sure had enough material to make a dress for herself, Anya and about five others.  Athena stopped at a dress done in ivory that had a plunging neckline and was backless.  "What do you think of this one?"

Anya nodded "Revealing enough to scandalise the starfleet side and voyeuristic enough to entertain the Erassian nobles...perfect."

"Maybe... " Athena hedged as she caught sight of another dress, "I should try it on."  She slipped into the dressing room and then into the dress.  She stepped out and asked, "What do you think," as she examined herself in the mirror.

Anya looked the dress over "I like it, it fits you well."  Athena's figure was very tantalising in the dress and Anya was almost feeling jealous of Viktor.

She reached out a grabbed the other dress that had caught her eye and tried it on as well.  She stepped out with the new dress on, "This ones better... Don't you think?"

Anya shook her head "Personally I think the first one suits you better.  Hey I've just thought of something who will give you away?  And who do you think Vik would pick as his best man?"

Anya's question made Athena  think of her father and mother.  {Missing in Action...officially  any ways.}  Her eyes filled with tears as she stepped back into the dressing room to put her own clothes back on.  "I'm not sure who Vik will pick .... maybe you," Athena suggested to lighten the mood and to avoid the first question.

"I doubt that, most likely would be either Hendrix or Sterns.  That's if Viktor just goes the standard way and picks one of his immediate subordinates.  I doubt Prime Minister Alexander would do it.  Premier Lephren or General Bordon are also on relatively good terms with Viktor but I don't know if the Alliance would want any of those High Risk people all in the same room.  That ones bit us in the ass before."  Anya mused.

Athena cane out of the dressing room saying, "How about another drink I feel like I have something caught in my throat?"

"Probably a good idea.  Remember I have to meet that sales rep from Holton Defense Contractors about acquiring some target drones in just under an hour."  Anya led the way back towards the bar district.

They found a nice quiet spot, that Athena decided to stay at for the duration of Anya's meeting.  They had a couple of drinks together before Anya left for the meeting and then had another one or two when she returned.  Athena sipped on a drink or two while she waited in thought for Anya to return.

" Commander...please, come in."

The door slid closed behind Rangi as she entered a moderate
sized room, decorated and furnished in tones of cream and
grey.
Colour was added by groups of paintings on the walls and by
a large vase of brilliant red flowers standing on a low
table near a pair of sofas set at right angle to each other.
The man who spoke stood up from his seat on one of them,
held out his hand and said:
" Stephen Jacobs...and as Twain famously said 'Reports of my
death have been grossly exaggerated."

Rangi took the offered hand, smiling widely at the quote, for
the rumour that the Chief Counsellor had met an untimely end
during the recent battle had reached her too.
She found her fingers grasped firmly for a moment.

"Rangi Summers." she said in reply.

"Take a seat.." he said, indicating the sofas "..may I get
you a refreshment?"

"Umm..juice please." she replied and at his quizzical
expression added " ..Apple."

"Apple." he repeated, turning to a selection of bottles set
on a nearby cabinet. " Lets see..." he murmured, running his
eyes over the collection.

Rangi sat down onto the softness of a cream sofa and
observed him.
He was tall and slim with thick yet receding hair which had
been dark brown but was now greying. He had a trim moustache
and a short beard tinged white and wore comfortable
informal clothes.
"I'll be glad when the replicators are fixed. " he
commented, glancing back to her "...its alot quicker than
this."

Rangi settled herself a little more as he poured liquid from
bottles and added ice.
"It's priorities though." he said.
His tone and expression were both kindly as he returned to
her smiling with deep brown eyes as he handed her a glass. "
Here we go....I hope thats a type you enjoy."

"Thankyou." Rangi accepted the drink and took a sip as
Stephen sat down adjacent to her, holding a glass of his
own. He looked at her.

"It's very good." she said.

He raised his own glass and took a drink, savoured the taste
and leaning forward to set the glass onto the table said:
" I needn't run through the '
Just-look-on-this-as-an-informal-chat' routine need I? "
He sat back and looked at her with slight amusement in his
eyes. "Let's cut to the chase. I'll ask you a few questions
and you give me the answers ok? Where are you from?"

Taken a little by surprise at his approach Rangi replied "
Earth."

" Brought up where?"

"England mostly."

"Family?" She was obviously answering too slowly for he
prompted her " Parents, dead or alive?"

" Dead..both dead."

" Siblings?"

" No"

"Married?"

"No."

"Children?"

"Yes."

"How many?"

" One...a son"

Stephen smiled to her as though to say 'You did that rather
well' but began again with another round of fast fired
questions.

"You're a former XO.. miss it?"

Rangi hesitated, for she didnt think it was the sort of
question that was easily answered by a 'yes or no' but the
Counsellor obviously thought it was.

"Yes or no" he urged.

Rangi took a second to reply and managed to sound uncertain
as she replied: " Yes."

"CMO position?"

"Yes"

"Think you'll do well here?"

"Yes"

She was astonished that he would pose the question in that
way and her expression reflected it but the counsellor didnt
appear to notice as he got to his feet, picked up his drink
and wandered across the room to a brightly lit aquarium.
He inspected the contents for a few seconds, swallowed a
mouthful of liquid from his glass then still not looking at
her asked:
"Do you like fish?"

Rangi wondered if the formal part of her routine appraisal
was on hold, so looked at the part of the Aquarium visible
to her from where she sat.
It appeared to be a well set up system with numerous
colourful things swimming about between plants and
waterweeds.
"It's very pretty." she said.

Stephen glanced at her, turning his head quickly at her
reply. " I didn't ask if you thought it was pretty.." he
said meeting her eye. " I asked if you like fish." His gaze
remained on her for a split second longer before he returned
his attention to the Aquarium.

Rangi had not liked his tone but after a second or so
replied evenly:
"I like to eat them."

" Eat them.." he repeated and this time when he looked at
her she was sure there was hidden amusement in expression
and voice.
She raised her chin.
"Actually, I find them rather irritating." she informed him.

He took a swig from his glass eyeing her all the time and
walked back with relaxed easy strides to retake his place on
the sofa.
"...and why might that be?" he asked.

Rangis eyes moved to the watery world and back to his. " I
find their constant activity distracting sometimes." she
said " ..they never keep still."

" They do tend to move alot." Stephen agreed " Could it be
they forget they have visited the same place five hundred
times in a day?....perhaps they constantly search for
something...perhaps we will never know."

His face broke into a disarming smile and once again he got
to his feet, setting the almost empty glass back on the
table.
"Thankyou for coming Commander. It's been a pleasure meeting
you." He sounded as if he meant it.
Rangi got to her feet too. { Is that it?} she thought.

" It's been a pleasure meeting you too counsellor." she
replied.

He took the glass she held in her hand."Allow me to see you
to the door." he said and walked beside her, opening the
door and bidding her goodbye as she went out.
The door slid shut with a faint 'hissss'

Rangi set off along the corridor but a frown developed
between her grey eyes.
It was the most surprising Counselling Evaluation she had
ever had. She shook her head and released a long breath as
she headed back to the medcentre rerunning the meeting
through her mind.

Inside the room, Stephen returned to the sofa, sat down,
reached for his glass and smiled down into the remaining
liquid before downing it in one go.
He leaned back against the cushions and looked at the
aquarium.

{Yes..} he told himself {..you can certainly learn alot
about people simply from the way they say 'yes' or 'no' }

"Eat them." he said and laughed.

[USS Chimera] || STARBASE 234 || SD: 240811.17 Joint Personal Log, Cmdr. Athena Wellington, Cmdr. Terek Weranis

==================== Starbase 234 ====================

"Sorry sir, but I'm gonna need your clearance identification."

The moment Terek stepped of the airlock, the guy that certainly matched
the person stereotype when someone mentions security, stopped him.

"Ah, right. Commander Terek Weranis. I was ordered to report to this
station."

"That might be sir, but I'm still gonna need your clearance ID."

"I just gave it to you. Verify my personal file and assignment status!"

Terek was getting a little annoyed but this. As usually when there were
some byrocratical nonsense that really didn't serve any purpose.

"No sir, that's not the clearance."

"Well and where can I get one?"

"At the chief of security of station commanding officer."

"Let me go and get one for myself then."

"No can do sir."

"Then call the chief of security and I'll talk to him."

"The chief of security is busy sir."

{Oh holy Prophets this is never going to end is it?}

"Then the station commander!"

"He's in a meeting."

"OH COME ON! How am I supposed to get the clearance when both people who
can give one to me are occupied?!"

Suddenly he saw a familiar person walking in the corridor behind the
guards or at least he hoped that it was her so he tried his luck and
shouted:

"Commander Wellington!! Athena!!"

Athena was taking a walk to get away from the evaluations when she heard her name being shouted.  She turned back and went down the short hallway to see if she recognized who was calling her name.  She furrowed her brow and then saw the a face that was indeed friendly.  She walked past the guard and gave the science officer a hug; hoping that she had correctly identified the problem. "Commander Terek," she started respecting his Bajoran heritage, "you are certainly a sight for sore eyes."

{Good grief, it is her} shrugged Terek with relief so heavy that his traditional earring tingled and was even more surprised by the hug he had received.

Bustling him past the guard she continued talking not letting either man get a word in, "I think I have a problem that need your attention.  How fortunate for me?"

The guard raised his phaser calling, "Halt, Commander Wellington, I' sorry but he hasn't been cleared."

"I'm vouching for him and if either Security or the Commanding officer has a problem with that... then tell them I abducted their best scientific mind."  She smiled as Terek and ushered him further down the short hallway.

The moment she got him to the hallway he chuckled slightly when she mentioned the abduction. As soon as they cleared the vicinity of the airlock he turned his her to see her.

"An abduction? I wouldn't expect this coming from you. And if I leave aside the your obvious delusion of me being the best scientific mind, the question springs in my mind. How many other scientists have you already abducted? What is your evil master plan and how do you intend to overtake this station? he smiled broadly.

"All it take is a counselor that confuses all and one good scientist, but if you tell anyone else that I'll deny it."

"No, seriously, thank you very much for helping me out there. I'm not sure where it would all end. Probably me being in the brig for unauthorized access to the station. And I'm pretty sure that security guy wouldn't have any troubles with me whatsoever. He'd just stun me with the phaser and then carried me under his arm. Does he have that from canteen? What do you feed those people with?"

Athena shrugged, "Personnel is kind of a disaster ... "

"Nonetheless he should probably get checked on the sickbay. Or science dept can take care of him. I'm not sure how equipped is this station, but I guess that genetics team would be thrilled to get a few samples."

They slowly walked to the section of the docking ring where were the large view ports to the either side of the ring. One facing the deep blackness of space and the other towards the central core that was softly illuminated by the exterior lights and light from offices, labs and quarters.

"To start with more serious things. What happened after I left the Chimera? A few days after I arrived on Valaris, the war started and my home world became one of the first battlegrounds. In the later days the fights moved to another systems, but we were cut off almost everything, including news and means of communication."

"Quite a lot has been going on.... warring with the Romulans mostly.  Part of the reason personnel is such a disaster is that many ships were destroyed and other need a lot of repair."  She reached out and touched his arm, "The Chimera was one of the ships destroyed..."

Terek already heard some rumors about Chimera taking heavy damage, but this was shock. {How could that behemoth ship be destroyed? How many people died? And what happened to Alex and Jerom?}

"Destroyed? How? When? What about the casualties? Did everyone got to the escape pods in time?"

Now he realized, why the Bragg officers were so serious. He was supposed to be there.

"Can I just say it was awful?  I wasn't even aboard myself... I had to watch it from another ship," she answered quietly.  She tried to answer his questions to the best of her ability though.  "The ship was destroyed during the battle ..... Many made it to escape pods but the Romulans shot at them like there were duck in a shooting gallery until ....." choked up at the remembered feelings, Athena's words fell short.  She swallowed down the emotions that threatened to spill over and started again, "I ... I don't know who ....."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to watch..." he has left the sentence unfinished as he didn't know what to say. His thoughts were scattered right now. Memories flashing through his head. He knew he had to ask. He didn't have any news from Alex for too long by now. Before he left the Chimera, they argued a lot. She didn't agree with him taking the leave and tried to persuade him to stay.

"Is... she... I mean, is there any manifest or casualties list? I just need to know." he asked quietly. This really wasn't the thing he expected upon his return to duty. Perhaps the Prophets were punishing him for that LOA he never should have taken.

"On here," Athena said and allowed Terek to look through the new information she had just received on causalities and such.

Terek looked at the console where the names were sliding slowly. He hoped and prayed for Alex Quinn not to be there. But it wasn't meant to be. Slowly as the long list was about to end, the dreaded letters glided on the black screen. 'LtCmdr. Alex Quinn - deceased'
Not even missing in action, not even false hope left for him. In shock he watched as the rest of the list passed away and only somewhere deep in his subconscious he noticed that Jerom Worik wasn't there. But right now, he didn't even realized it. He touched the empty screen, like if he tried to verify the reality of the situation. Then taking a deep breath he faced Athena again.

"Has her family been notified? Did she have a propper burial? Was the body even recovered?"
He knew that there was almost no chance how Alex's body could have been spared the Chimera's demise.

Feeling utterly useless and sensing Terek's emotions jumping around like the questions he asked in rapid succession, she shook her head, "I.. I'm sorry I don't know.  I'm sure Rojac is on top of things."

Taking a few deep breaths to get together he said with as calm and emotionless voice as possible: "I think I need a drink." and the moment he siad those words, the irony of the situation struck him. There he was, with the counselor, telling her that he needs to solve his issue with drink. His mouth twisted in a bitter smirk.
"Care to join me? I mean... you will probably have to show me where to get drunk here."

"Fortunately for you I know just the place," she started and lead him off in another direction before adding, "just don't spread it around."  They walked together for a couple of steps and added, "And don't make this a habit."

"Can't make any promises right now, but I'll do my best."

-------------------------
The week kicks off with the Lancealot heading to Aeran III. Vlimar has his doubts about the Romulan withdrawl and asks the crew of the D'Artangnan to abort their boarding action.  Cropa reflects on the battle and sees the orders for the divergance of the crew.  Martin chases after a creature of Aeran III but gets bitten as a result, Rangi frets like most mothers would.  Shane thinks about the course of actions for the future and plans to land the Qashqai near survivors including Martin and Rachel.  Trent searches for Rick and finds him and his group of survivors.  MaiKai and Lindsay discuss Mai's mental health whilst trying to get out of their escape pod.  The D'Artangan witnesses the Romulans killing one of their own ships.  Vlimar prepares himself for landing on Aeran III.
The Head of the Erassian Alliance Josef Lephren declares war on the Romulan Star Empire.  Cropa writes some notification letters and puts in requests for a few promotions and medals to be passed out. Gustav and Mimi spend some quality time together on Aeran III.  Vlimar reviews his new work environment. Viktor helps treat Athena's injuries and in a surprise move pops the question.  Terek makes a hasty withdrawl from Valaris with his grandfather. Cropa congratulates Athena on her engagement and orders her to Starbase counselling.  Rangi and Vlimar have a chat.  Shane has a chat with Councilman Turan So about the Mutual Defence Treaty.  Post timeskip Rangi and T'Vel arrange for Scott to return to work.  Anya and Athena knock back some drinks and arrange for a shopping trip to Charos III.  Rick meets his former Deputy and seeks to arrange the repair of Unity.  Vlimar meets the CO of the D'Artangan who wants to thank him.  Rick and Trent fly to pick up MaiKai and Rick learns he is to be an uncle again.  Terek flies to Unity aboard a freighter.  Rick organises the repair of Unity.  A promotions service is held on SB 234 before the crew heads off to their individual assignments.

So how will the development of Chimera - C go?  Will Viktor and Athena head for an early seperation?  And will there be cake if the next Chimera manages to make it to retirement?  Find out next time on the next exciting installment of USS Chimera!

"What about Commander Utley?" Kon asked.
"Commander Utley?" Rick said.
"Lieutenant Commander Chloe Utley. She is Starbase 234's

"I knew who Commander Utley was," Kon said as if it was

"As did I?" Tobok added.

Sign language?........

The Ensign couldn't say no to another officer, especially
not to a Lieutenant-Colonel which the reputation is known
for... well... be unknown. That said a lot, in a world that
everything is readily accesible by two or three hit of a
finger on a console... The Ensign came back to Vlimar with
the coffee. Vlimar thanked him with a nod of the head and
started sipping it. It was good. Very good. Vlimar waved at
the Ensign again and pointed at Shane. He though that Shane
could use a little booster as well.

but we have a good time even then. You are unlike anyone

"Hey! Don't talk to pilot when he's flying." came a haste
reply in a tone that suggested that Terek's mind is
currently somewhere else. Considering his flight pattern, it
was probably some happy place where reality had little
influence.

"Like Antony and Cleopatra." Rojac grinned. "It will

"I can only make a recommendation if you meet the minimum

matter-of-factually, clasping her hands behind her back and
looking him up and down. "But from what I observe you seem

Strange visitors?......
Vlimar raised his right eyebrow, being surprised of such a
reply. "Repay me?", he asked. A moment of silence.
"Repay me for what?  I've only did transmit the warning,
Ms. Henry...", he finally  added.
Moira nodded. She was still holding Vlimar's hand,
starting to make  him feel uncomfortable. She smiled
slightly and let Vlimar's hand go,slowly. "Thank you,
Colonel... It's been a pleasure working with you.. ",
she said. Moira smiled and left the Operations deck right
away,  leaving  Vlimar standing there, looking puzzled.
"That... was... weird...", he said. Vlimar looked back
at his right  hand, closing it into a fist. He gathered his
thoughs and turned  around.
"Oh yes, the sensors...", he said. He sat back down,
looking  through some data.

"You know Mai - I'm going to need a little more heavy duty style of some foot wear for all your bullshit I'm about to be standing in," Lindsay knew that would get Mai's attention.  The CMO hated when people got a smart mouth with her.

Mai just glared at her like ' I will set you ablaze with my eyes' type of look.  "Whatever...."

- Subject Lines
-------------------------
Please remember to use the following format for your subject lines:
SD 24YYMM.DD, Duty/Personal Log, Rank Name
e.g., SD 240502.01, CO's Log, Capt Rojac
e.g., SD 240502.01, Personal Log, Cropa Rojac
The [USS Chimera] part of the subject is placed automatically by the listserv, so you don't need to include it.
Also remember to include your details at the end of your log
e.g.,
Captain Cropa Rojac

-------------------------
- Logging Guidelines
-------------------------
Logging:
The weekly logging deadline is at Midnight (12:00AM/00:00) GMT/UTC (19:00 EST); all logs received after the deadline will be counted for the following week. If you are pressed for time and would like a log to count for the previous week, but it is sent after the deadline, please send an email to the command team when you send the log so that we can make the corrections.
Please remember that all MAJOR plot changes need to be cleared with the command staff before a log goes through! You can do this by sending the command staff (chimera-command@ucip.org ) a log labeled with "Draft" tagged to the subject line. We'll typically let you know if it's approved within 24 to 48 hours, or tell you what might need to be modified before it's sent to the listserv.
When using other characters in your logs, please keep in mind that person's characteristics. Character information can be found on the UCIP website or the USS Chimera website (under CREW - just click on the Star Trek symbol next to the character's name). If you're still unsure how to interact with a character, then privately mail the person
involved, and I'm sure they'll be willing to help.
Conversely, if you feel that your character is being portrayed incorrectly by someone please contact them to try to work out an agreeable solution. Just keep in mind when logging to treat other characters the way you'd like them to treat you - with the respect due to any member of Starfleet who is a specialist in their field.
If you think your log may be going out of bounds, then please ask! If you are having problems finding things to write about or would just like some help with your log, please contact your department head or the command team. Remember, you don't always have to log about things relating to the main plot - logs that develop your character's
personality are encouraged! We're eager to help if you're having trouble; just email the command team (
chimera-command@ucip.org).

- On Report
-------------------------
Any officer who is Absent Without Leave (0) for two or more consecutive
weeks is considered "On Report." Crewmen on report should email the command staff immediately to explain their absence (too much to do in RL is a fine excuse) and say when they anticipate being able to log again in the future.
The following crewmen are on report:

none.

- Removals/Resignations
-------------------------
The following crew have either resigned or have been dropped due to lack of activity. If they would like a position on the USS Chimera, they will need to reapply.

[USS Chimera] SD 240811.16 Duty Log [Starbase 234] Lt. JG Tom Jardan (CSEC)

[Starbase 234] *** security office***

Tommy walked up to the podium and looked at the assembled security crew. He was not happy withn what he saw. He only counted 30 specialists and was hoping for more.To his right stood chief johnson, who was also a little discouraged. With so little numbers it would be hard to both maintain security for both the Erassian delegation and the station itself.

" Thank you all for coming. I will be brief. Over the next few weeks I will be setting a schedule for all shifts regarding your assignments. Needless to say, we all will be working doubles. I am sorry for this. Until replacements start to arrive here at the station, we are the first line of defense. I have faith in each and every one of you." Tommy cleared his throut.

" We are also responsible for the safety of our guests. We have seen them come to help us, so now it is our turn to help them be safe to carry on forward. Now for some good news. Spc Gordon, front and center." Tommy watched as Gordon strode forward. " Gordon, you have demonstrated the best of mankind, no, starfleet has to offer. You are hereby promoted to the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. Congradulations. You are also hereby given the Kragite Order of Heroism. MasterChief Johnson, you are promoted to the position Master of Arms." Tommy smiled " Let these men's actions serve to inspire us all. Dismissed."

[USS Chimera] ||STARBASE 234|| 240811.16, Joint Duty Log, Cdr Rick Rodgers & ALt JG Gustav Kroitzer

"Paul Howorth" <palsh963@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=Starbase 234=

<<SNIP>>

"OK, we all know what we need to do. Lets make it happen," Rick concluded,
not needing to dismiss anyone. "Gustav, Tobok … stay behind for a moment."

With the meeting concluded, he pulled his two engineers from the Chimera
aside, to a more secluded location.

"OK, here's what's going to happen," Rick said in a low tone. "A number of
sensors are going to be deployed from a couple of runabouts. These sensors
are going to be dummy sensors, deployed closer to the starbase. We want the
Romulans to believe that this is our sensor network."

Gustav nodded while listening intently to what Rick was saying.

"Our actual sensor network will extend just inside the netural zone,
or what's left
of it. The difference with these sensors will be that they'll be
cloaked," Rick said.
"Only a handful of people, including you two, will know this."

Still listening Gustav wondered who else know of this plan but then
shrugged off theneed to know and blamed it on his natural curiosity.

"The ship deploying these sensors will look as if they are on a simple
patrol," Rick
said. "By then, the decoy sensor network will have already been deployed, so
the Rommies shouldn't be the wiser. That's why we're keeping this as much of a
secert as possible. We'll be able to see the Romulans when they don't think they
are in our sensor range."

Gustav realising how volitile this sector could become saw the
necessity in setting up the new sensor network and thought that the
fact the sensors will be cloaked was almost genius.

"Guys, I'm trusting you with this because, with the expection of Commander
Kordova, I don't know the engineers from the starbase or the other
starships well
enough. Any questions?"

"No questions from me Rick" Gustav said undestanding the importance of
keeping this quite.

"Well, then. Good luck," Rick said.

[USS Chimera] SD 240811.16 || Personal Log || Capt Cropa Rojac ||

[Personal Quarters - SB 234 - UNITY - Aeran III]

A layer of icing fell into the sink bowl beneath Cropa as he wiped at his face with the towel in his hands. Mushroom pie was hard to get out, and was made increasingly more difficult with the addition of facial hair. As Rojac was meticulously picking the bits of pie from between the follicles he heard his computer chime with a message.

"Computer." He said aloud. "Transfer call to the restroom."

The system beeped in acknowledgment, and he saw a flashing icon appear on the mirror below his face. He stepped back wiped some more icing from his nose, and pressed the box. It expanded to cover his face, and the text appeared before him.

It was a status report from the Bragg Shipyards regarding his new ship. The ship would be ready in two weeks, and they were requesting he send some people for final inspections before delivery. In truth, Rojac had already designated his team leaders for that excursion. 1Lt Jade Reese, his new Chief of Operations, and (A)LtJG Gustav Kroitzer, his Deputy Chief Engineer, were in charge of the crew team for final inspections, and would accompany the project director on the delivery. And the project director was none other than Rojac's former Commanding Officer, Commander Bren Ohmsford.

Rojac smiled at the thought of Bren, now the only Captain of a Chimera that hadn't had his ship destroyed. That was quite an accomplishment. But Bren was meant for more than Starship command, he was Fleet material, and went on to be the Deputy Director of SSF Research and Development. Now it seemed that the War was calling Ohmsford back to a more direct form of service, where his experience would be more valuable to the war effort.

Rojac quickly typed up a memo to Reese and Kroitzer and told them to contact Commander Ohmsford to schedule a meeting. He had scheduled a runabout to transport them to Bragg, with a departure time at 1300 hours the next day.

When he was done, he swiveled around in his chair and checked out the view from his viewport of Aeran III below. It was a beautiful planet, and Rojac wished he could have spent more time there. He thought of purchasing some land on the water somewhere, and setting up a  dock with a sailboat, and exploring the waters. Perhaps after the war, he told himself. Perhaps.
