Commander Moïra Henry was sitting in her guest room, while she was catching up on old transmission. Moïra was really bad at answering to her family's "calls". Since childhood, she was a very independant person. She always had to have her way. "My way or the Highway", she used to say. And, with time, it served her well. She was in the top 5 in her Academy year, she had a good career, starting as a Science Officer, moving slowly into ranks. She went back to the Academy, nearly after 13 years of service, just to learn the basics of tactics and operations, so she could hold a more "bridgeable" position. Once again, it paid off.
On SD240610.28, 2 years agos, day for day, she was on board the USS Flintstone, a Akira refit class ship, on an Inbound patrol mission when a severe explosition occured inside the ship. The explosition killed severely the XO and injured severely the CO, along with many crew member. The ship's morale immediately died with the XO, which was a great leader and a great friend for Moïra, and the mentor of many young officers. Starfleet sent in special investigators who conducted interrogations on all the crew. Moïra was a little disappointed from that "interview". She immediately knew it was an "inside job", targetted directly at her XO. The assassin was named after a few weeks of investigations, which during all that time, the crew was quarantine inside the Flintstone. The culprit was Lieutenant John Glasgow, the 1st Engineering Assistant. Glasgow was know to everyone as being a morose, but yet enjoyable shipmate, who enjoy pulling tricks on it's collegues. Glasgow had more that 30 years of experience, coming from the Enlisted ranks. Moïra read the report over and over again, but couldn't figure out the reason that would have push Glasgow. At that time requested a transfer to another ship, which was immediately declined, along with all the other requests for transfer from the same ship.
Moïra remembers received the transmission of that refusal. What she didn't know, at that time, is that it was a stepping stone to her career. Moïra was bumped into a temporary Commanding Officer position, since StarFleet was afraid a change a command would benefit it's ennemies, especially because the news of an "inside job" would look rather bad on it's stability. Moïra's mission was to command the ship from it's current location to the end of the neutral zone, to get seen by Romulans and come back to Earth, so it can be dry docked and refitted. Moïra completed that mission without incident, encountering two warbird patrolling the border of the NZ and came back, without talking anyone outside her ship. Moïra was then told that she would serve at the Academy as a Science Instructor for two years, then be reassigned.
The two years of teaching what she loved more than anything else and learning what she ignored, she finally received her reassignment. She was to report to the University of Copernicius Fleet Yard to take command of the newly built USS D'Artagnan, a Souverein class Mark II starship. Moïra was rather surprised of that assignment as she was only a newly promoted Commander and she felt that her science background would better fit a Science ship or a Medical ship, not an exploration ship. However, she was thrilled with the possibility of a new experience and was equally thrilled of learning the name of her XO. It was Commander Marcus Blitz, well known for the "Blitz principle". Blitz was overlyknown in the Academy as being one of the best tactican around (that is without knowing the Chimera's crew quality... ;) ). Blitz was also known for declining any command offer that was sent to him. Blitz did not want the responsability of having a full ship at his mercy, feeling he was unable to control himself in a crisis situation, enhancing the need for a CO who would control him.
Moïra finished answering to her sister's message and smiled. She knew she would have a great deal of adventure to tell the next time she writes. At that time, the yellow alert lights started shining. Moïra looked up, curiously. She just received a message on her terminal. The orders that that she had to report to the D'Artagnan immediately and leave to SB234. Moïra expecting this to be a mistaked, as she was told the D'Artagnan wouldn't be ready before 36 hours, then the official naming ceremony, and so on. But the order came directly from Admiral Janeway, which, let's be honest, was a God for Moïra.
Moïra exited her room and started running towards the shuttle bay, which she saw a shuttle waiting for her. She stepped inside the Shuttle and looked to her right. Blitz was smiling with all his teeths and said: "That's an early departure".
Moïra couldn't help but feel her hands shaking. She saw, from her position, the D'Artagnan, still having teams working on him. The name was U.S.S. D'A, as it was left uncompleted. She hung her head down for a few seconds, taking a deep breath, as the shuttle entered the main bay of the D'Artagnan...
