= USS Chimera - Environmental Control =
Specialist Harry Marina was trying to divert all power he
could from the environmental systems to the main grid. He
was tasked by Lieutenant Klein, his superior officer. He
went with three other members of his team, who were slightly
less experienced than him.
Marina tasked his teammates into verifying the validity of
decreasing slightly the deck temperatures and level of
oxygen in non-essential areas. He thought he could save
close to 7% of the total Environmental control energy by
doing so. However, these actions could be made only
on-location.
Marina heard a loud noise coming from behind him. He was
halfway into a collecting tube, rerouting the "hardware", to
be able to by pass the computer's security warnings. He knew
this would not be legal in normal time, but in times of war,
everything is legit. Marina heard another big noise, some
sort of a metal on metal noise. The racket was followed by a
loud and desperate scream coming from behind him.
Marina backed up into the room, and stood. At that exact
same time, one of the pipes, carrying plasma based cooling
liquids exploded, directly into Marina's face, hands and
chest. Marina felt the excrutiating burning of the cold. He
opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out.
Marina realized he was looking his eyesight as well, but
still managed to see the room darkening, and become red.
= Sickbay =
All was mostly quiet in Sickbay while the battle raged on
outside, but as was protocol the staff were on standby and ready to
accept any casualties or injuries that might arise. Alexander Rice was
at his station near Emergency Room 1 reviewing Lieutenant Kroitzer's
latest
medical exam when things started getting hairy.
A male nurse hurried down the corridor towards him and two other
doctors who were milling about. "Doctor, I'm
getting reports of ventilation leakage in the environmental
systems. Several sections have been affected; patients are being beamed in."
Alexander put down the padd he'd been reading and rushed into the
emergency room as patients were being transported in from the affected
sections. The first patient was lifted onto the bed and Alexander took
a closer look. Coolant leakage was a nasty business.
"Specialist Marina," Lucy said as she pulled the medtray
closer. "He was on the deck 10, environmental control."
Quickly glancing at the readings from the medical scanner,
Alexander nodded. "His lungs are seared. 10ccs dexalin and
anesthezine. We can probably expect more of the same." Alexander
reached for the medtray behind him and selected a scalpel. He sliced
through Marina's uniform and searched for a patch of unaffected skin
to attach the small oxygen transfuser which delivered oxygen directly
to the bloodstream. He had just attached the device, when the
biomonitor indicated that Marina's vital signs were falling.
"Heartrate is falling quickly," Lucy said. "I think we might lose
him." Her words were barely cold when Marina flatlined. Without
missing a beat, she reached for the cardiostimulators and handed them
to Alexander.
"Quick thinking," he said as he took them and placed on Marina's
chest. "Stand by!"
The stimulators delivered voltage directly into his heart, but there
was no response. "Come on," Alexander muttered under his breath and
tried again. A second charge was delivered and it worked as the
sinusoidal rhythm returned. Lucy let out an audible sigh of relief.
"Take him to Intensive Care," Alexander ordered. "Sterilize him and
set up a bioregenerative field."
"Yes, Doctor," Lucy nodded as two orderlies her with moving the bed
out to the ICU ward. Alexander went to scrub his hands and wait for
the next patient.
