"Next order of business I believe to be a Starfleet
Intelligence vessel attempting transit through the outer
edge of the Erass System with trajectory to end up in the
Canna System. I'd guess looking for the Breen base in that
system." Alecto quipped.
Shane smiled: "I hope you do not expect me to comment SFI
movements. But to keep the conversation flowing … there
was really a STARFLEET ship that attempted to pass Erass
System, but was denied access, I wonder about the
reasons…"
"The same reasons that SSF would block one of the Alliance's
ships from traveling through the Omega System. The Erass
System is the seat of power for the Alliance and you expect
us to let an Intelligence vessel from a foreign power pass
through without challenge? Plus if you ever bothered to
read the Mutual Defense Treaty you would see that in every
single draft from the first to the final the Erass System
was listed as a denied zone." Alecto smiled back acidly.
"Perhaps Commodore you would care to explain why Starfleet
would be in such a hurry to break the terms of the treaty?"
"Well, indeed there is a matter of importance for SSF
Command within Erassian space and just as we speak a group
of four SSF ships including the USS Chimera is prepared to
investigate the matter. Maybe we could agree on an unlimited
passage of that group through Erassian space"
Alecto couldn't contain herself and burst out laughing in
the Commodore's face. "We refuse one lightly armed vessel
passage through a denied area and you now expect us to roll
out the red carpet for a battle group to roam where they
please. As you may well be aware Commodore the Erassian
Alliance and the United Federation of Planets signed up to
a MUTUAL Defense Treaty, nowhere within the bounds of that
treaty did it say that the Alliance would bend over to be
shafted at the Federation's whim. To put it simply your
outrageous request is denied."
"Well said, Ambassador" Shane replied. "I hoped we can
add our small bits to the effort of solving this issue, but
now I see I was mistaken. You can inform your people about
the task group heading way to Erassian space … and I hope
your superiors will think different about our request. Both
our worlds are on very thin ice and its sad that you still
hammer the ice. Have a nice day". With that, Shane bowed
slightly towards the Erassian woman and left the room.
The stand-offish response had been expected from the
Commodore. His dislike for the Alliance was widespread
knowledge but the fact that he would be willing to
break the Mutual Defense Treaty so flagrantly would be
pushing the Alliance too far. If this task force were to
force its way into the Erass System the Alliance wouldn't
take it as grounds for a complaint it would see it as an
act of war. As for the whole situation around the strike
on the Narendra Station the Alliance had a right to
protect itself and if anyone had a legal right to complain
it was the Klingon Empire certainly not the Federation who
held no jurisdiction within the borders of the Empire. Still
though it was surprising that Guzman revered the Klingons
as allies above the Alliance when the Klingons hadn't lifted a
finger (and in the case of Narendra cooperated with the
Romulans) whereas the Alliance had helped stop the capture
of this very starbase. Some people had short memories indeed.
