Trent rubbed his eyes as he looked over the reports that had awaited
him when he arrived at his office this morning. He shook his head, knowing
that eventually he was going to have to deal with it.
"Great, just great," he muttered.
Just then, First Lieutenant Bannister entered his office.
"Lieutenant, I just sent out your transfer request 15 minutes ago. So no, I
haven't received a response," Trent said, looking up from the reports at the
marine.
"That's not why I'm here," Bannister said.
Trent sighed.
"Let me guess, this has something to do with Commander Utley."
Bannister nodded.
"You know, since I arrived here, I haven't heard a peep from her or anything
bad about her. It's as if everything in engineering is in excellent shape. Then
I get this," Trent said, waiving his right arm over the PADDs. "Complaints from
every section of the starbase, from task force personnel on down to the
janitor."
"Sir, I was unaware UNITY had a janitor," Bannister interrupted.
"You know what I mean, lieutenant. It seems that problems have been
popping up all over the starbase and that she's responsible."
"Well, sir, you are not going to like this," Bannister said, handing Trent another
PADD. "Security cameras caught this 40 minutes ago."
Trent looked at the PADD, which showed a video image. He took a deep breath
and closed his eyes.
"I envy you, lieutenant," Trent finally said.
"Sir?"
"You'll be joining a combat unit where you either kill or be killed. I, on the other
hand, will have to continue to deal with this," Trent lifted the PADD Bannister
had given him.
Trent stood, using both hands on his desk to force himself up.
"Where is she now?" Trent asked.
"The brig."
"Inform Lieutenant Mumacik that I'll be paying Commander Utley a visit. Just me
and her. Afterwards, he can deal with her anyway he wishes."
"Aye, sir," Bannister said as Trent walked past him and out of the office.
Several minutes later, after proving to the security personnal in the brig that he
was who he said he was, Trent was escorted to the cell that Chloe Utley
occupied. She remained seated as Trent walked up to the force field barrier.
"Commander, you know why I'm here," Trent said.
The starbase CEO shook her head.
"Security cameras showed you planting surveillance devices near the
ambassadors' offices. This seems to coincide with a rash of problems that took
place throughout the starbase. Do you deny this?"
She again shook her head.
"Now, I've been told that I'm a pretty good gambler, so I would wager that if I
had Mr. Mumacik's people perform scans of sensitive areas of the starbase that
other such devices would be discovered. Would I be wrong to make this wager?"
This time, Chloe remained still.
"I take your lack of response as a yes," Trent said. "So, my next question, which
I'm sure I don't need to ask, but I will anyway to amuse myself is, 'who are you
planting these devices for?'"
"The Romulans," she said.
Trent smiled, "Nah, if it was the Romulans, you wouldn't be so willing to reveil that
fact. No, it wasn't the Rommies, but I'm not going to be the one who sits here and
interrogates you. Task force and starbase security will sort that out along with
anything else pertaining to your activities. Good day, Ms. Utley."
As Trent walked away, Chloe stood and rushed to the front of the cell.
"Sir!" she shouted out.
Trent stopped and turned to face Utley.
"Yes," he replied.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out. Then, after a
few seconds, she finally spoke.
"Uh, nothing sir," she said in a near whisper as he lowered her head.
Trent nodded as he turned and walked away.
