"Come in." Rangi called. She looked up from her work as the door opened to admit the person she had been waiting for and with a welcoming smile she got to her feet, skirted her desk and crossed the room to meet the newcomer.
"T'Vel....how good to see you again." she said holding out her hand. "How are you?"
"Greetings, Commander," T'Vel said as she greeted the 1TF Medical Advisor. "It is agreeable to see you again."
"Please take a seat.." Rangi said gesturing towards the chair and as T'Vel walked forward she added: "Ahhh...a promotion I see."
"I have been well," the Vulcan doctor replied. "On my return to Vulcan I applied for full transfer to naval rank. I was assigned as acting Chief of Medicine at the Starfleet Compound and promoted to Lieutenant Commander."
"Congratulations." Rangi said and as T'Vel seated herself Rangi too returned to her place and sat down.
"May I ask why you decided to return here?" she asked. "When you left you had concerns for your children."
"My decision to return is in part because I believe that I can be of more use here than on Vulcan. My son is grown now and my daughter has begun her education. My parents remain on Vulcan and will provide the required support to them," she explained. "How is your son?"
"Oh he is very well, thank you....full of energy and endless questions." She smiled, then changed the subject.
"I was very pleased to see your application for the DCMO's job. Scott Fisher has transferred to Chimera as CMO. It was a sudden necessity and left Unity in need of a replacement as I too expect to be called away anytime soon. I cannot think of anyone more suitable than yourself and this interview is really a formality although you 'do' have the right to refuse the offer."
"Thank you, there is no need. I accept the offer," T'Vel said simply.
"Excellent." Rangi said having expected the answer. "I'd hoped you'd say that. So...."
She looked at the three neat stacks of padd's set on the right hand side of her desk and selected the first one.
"...these will bring you up to speed with the current state of play in both infirmaries. There's nothing that needs urgent attention."
T'Vel nodded. "I will see to them immediately. Is there anything else you need me for, Commander?"
Rangi hesitated, then reaching for a second padd said: "This might interest you." She held out the padd for T'Vel to take.
"The patient was exposed to radiation... as you can see there has been some alteration in her DNA but she's also developing telepathic abilities."
T'Vel glanced quickly at the padd and then back at Rangi. "That is unusual. Doctor Hastings is handling her case?"
"Yes he is." Rangi replied. "I can't foresee that he will have any problems and I know you'll keep an eye on it...but it's a very interesting case."
"Indeed," T'Vel replied. "She has a unique physiology and documentation of this case will certain prove useful if a similar situation should arise in the future."
" Exactly." Rangi replied. "It's rare to be in at the beginning of something like this."
