"First Lieutenant Carlos Castillo", Charly said almost boastfully as
he handed his orders to the guard posted at the entrance to the USS
Chimera. He clumsily shifted the heavy duffel bag that slung over his
back. It was beginning to cause his shoulder to ache.
"Yes Sir", the Marine responded as he validated the credentials.
"Everything seems to be in order, please step through the scanner".
Charly eyed the guard with puzzlement. As if sensing the officers
hesitation the Marine quickly added, "Its standard procedure sir, we
have to ensure that nobody brings anything unauthorized onto the
ship".
Charly sighed, he supposed he was going to have to get used to the
extra security on an actual starship. "Yes, of course you do", he
added matter-of-factly and stepped through the scanner.
The Marine handed the Lieutenants credentials back to him, "Thank you
sir, you are all clear, welcome to the Chimera".
Charly nodded, half turned then paused for a second and stared at the
guard. "I was under the impression that Corporals such as yourself
were supposed to salute an officer?", he said raising an eyebrow.
"Uh...yes sir", the guard responded with a sharp salute which Charly
quickly reciprocated. "That's better", he added then turned to walk
away. As he stepped into the turbolift he could almost feel the guard
giving him the finger while his back was turned. He decided it was
best not to turn around and check.

Some minutes later Charly found his way to his quarters and frowned as
the door slid open. "Well I suppose it will have to do", he grumbled.
He was used to the large apartment his family's fortune had afforded
him back at his old duty station and after having seen the size of the
ship from the port had hoped that his room would have been larger,
especially if the Captain knew who he was. Having been born into
wealth he wasn't used to such small sized quarters, in fact the entire
living quarters were roughly the size of one of the closets back at
the old place. "Perhaps I could see the operations officer about
procuring a larger room", he thought to himself, then quickly
dismissed the idea. He was supposed to be roughing it after all and
besides, there was no need to make the other officers jealous.
Stepping further into the room he slid the duffel bag containing his
belongings onto the floor and sat down. The ache in his shoulder had
now moved down to his upper back, "I'd better see the ships medical
staff about that", he thought, "It could get worse". The thought of
calling a masseuse to his quarters had passed through his mind, but
was quickly shot down when he realized that the starship he was on now
most likely did not have one, he was 'roughing it', after all.
Better check anyways.
"Computer", he said out-loud. "Does this ship have a masseuse on board".
BLEEP. THE STARSHIP USS CHIMERA DOES NOT HAVE A POSITION WITH THE
DESIGNATION OF MASSEUSE.
He would have to talk to the Captain about that. He'd hoped that he
and the Captain would get along, after all how could anybody not like
Lieutenant Castillo. He smiled thinking about the women executive
officer and almost laughed, 'maybe she knows how to give a good back
rub'. He honestly couldn't think of very many reasons why a female
would be given the responsibility of XO aboard a starship, he'd heard
of females commanding ships before, but had always assumed it was to
satisfy the politicians back home.
Leaning his head back into the chair he closed his eyes, took a deep
breath then decided to take a nap. It had been a long trip after all.
