*** Med Advisors Office * StarBase Unity ***
When Rangi returned to her office for the first time in
several weeks, she had expected to find a great deal of work
waiting for her attention. Even with the help from her
deputy it had piled up but when she entered the room she
stopped and said slowly : "Wow" when she saw the neat stacks
of padds.
She crossed to her chair, sat down and scooted it forward
then taking and releasing a deep breath she opened the first
report.
The hours passed without much interruption and by midmorning
she was beginning to think she had made some headway and
decided to break off for a drink. She had just got to her
feet when the door opened and a man she did not recognise
entered the room followed quickly by her yeoman who said :
" Ma'am I'm so sorry..but he wouldnt listen to me."
First Lieutenant Castillo walked into the office and
immediately approached the Commander,
"Excuse me, but I have a pressing medical issue that could
not wait. "
He glanced at the man who had attempted to block his
entrance, " You see, I have several pressing matters to
attend to shortly and my ships medical staff isn't fully
staffed at the moment..."
He stopped suddenly,
"Can I speak with you PRIVATELY", he added glaring at the
yeoman.
"Shall I call security ma'am?" the yeoman asked glaring back
at the intruder.
" No..its alright Nick. Thankyou I'll deal with this." Rangi
answered.
Nick seemed none too sure that this was a wise move but gave
a short nod and backed away.
" Very well ma'am..I'll be right outside."
When the door closed behind him Rangi looked at the
newcomer.
" And who might you be and what is this pressing medical
issue that cannot wait?" she asked.
"Lieutenant Castillo.Actually", Charly began. "I was hoping
you would tell me". He stepped closer to the doctor, "My
shoulder is aching quite badly."
As he stepped he placed his left arm over his right shoulder
and rubbed it,
"Unfortunately I was unable to find a masseuse anywhere",
he said clearly expecting the Commander to agree with him at
what a horrible tragedy that was.
Rangi looked at him in silence wondering for a moment
whether he was trying to be funny. She stepped back from her
desk and walked around it to stand in front of him.
" You burst in here because you have an aching shoulder?"
she asked coldly.
Charly stopped as if someone had just slapped him. His hand
moved away from his shoulder.
"Perhaps you didn't understand me", he began slowly. "I
think it may be sprained, or worse, You are a DOCTOR are you
not?". Without waiting for her to reply, "then do something
to help me, or give me something to help with the pain!"
He did his best not to sound condescending.
{ Is all medical staff on this damn starbase this
incompetent } he thought.
" Oh, you're in pain are you?" she asked. " Well I wonder
why you didnt go straight to the infirmary. There are 'many'
qualified doctors there who would have treated you."
Charly sighed, "Look", he began, "I didn't want to say
anything, but the truth is", he paused, "I'm not sure you
have the proper security clearance to hear this, but, well
I'm the Deputy Chief Security officer on board the USS
Chimera." he said, obviously ignorant to Rangi's own service
aboard the ship.
"Its a Special Forces ship", he added clearly attempting to
impress her. "I don't have time to be waiting in the normal
infirmary where all the regular starfleet people go, I have
several important pressing matters that I need to attend
too, soon".
" I see." she replied, in a tone that implied she had just
been allowed to know a great secret. "Well, in that case you
had better take a seat." she replied " I'll examine you at
once ofcourse. Just a moment."
She turned away, hiding the amusement that filled her eyes
and threatened to make her laugh and retreived a
medtricorder from the grey medcase that lay on floor beside
her chair.
She gave him a reassuring smile as she returned to where he
sat.
" Initial scan." she explained and hovered the tool above
his shoulder then swept it over the entire area.
" Mmmmmm..." she said, sounding thoughtful then " Ohhhhh."
She took a step back and made great play of adjusting the
setting.
With another small smile she resumed her position and began
a second scan which by now had told her there was certainly
no damage to the joint and in fact very little problem
whatsoever.
"Uhha." she said after a few seconds as though all had been
revealed.
She switched off the medtool.
" I need to carry out a physical exam." she said.
"What?, Why?, Charly said suddenly worried. "What does that
mean?"
Rangi shrugged.
" It means a physical examination of your shoulder. I can
manipulate it to find out the amount of movement you have
and then decide on any ......treatment."
She smiled.
The lieutenant's eyes widened when she said the word
'treatment', and that wicked little smile she gave made him
feel uncomfortable,
"Uhhh, you know, now that I think of it, my shoulder is
starting to feel better already, perhaps I don't need to do
a physical?", he said, getting up and stepping towards the
door, "Perhaps if it gets worse after a few days I could
come back". he added half-way out the door with a wave.
" Come back here!"
Her tone told him he had better listen or face the
consequences.
Rangi remained where she was and waited for him to return.
She could see Nick looking in through the open door as
Charley made his way back.
"Now lets get a few things straight." she said. " I'll tell
you when to leave."
She looked him up and down slowly.
" I dont know who you think you are Lieutenant but you will
never again assume that you can enter the office of the
First Task Forces Medical Advisor without an appointment.
Neither will you waste any of my doctors time with a
nonexistant complaint. There's nothing wrong with your
shoulder. At most you have lifted or carried a heavy weight
and the unaccustomed exercise is causing a minor ache which
will pass very quickly.
Further more..." she continued as he was about to speak.
"...I'm astounded that you have the position on board
Chimera when you seem ready to divulge any and all
information about yourself and your ship to someone you do
not know."
"Ma'am", Charly coughed as if he'd swallowed something
extremely bitter. "I didn't know", he swallowed, "I mean, I
thought you were just a doctor...Look, can we not report
this, I just got here, they'd probably send me packing if
they heard that".
He looked appalled but Rangi wasnt entirely convinced. "It
states it clearly enough on the door." she said then without
answering his plea added curtly : " You're dismissed." and
turned away, placing him in her mind into the list of
hypochondriacs she knew and also as a young upstart who
thought he was a big fish in a small pond.
Nick, who had heard the end of the conversation stepped
inside the room. " Lieutenant?" he said loudly.
Charly turned and looked at the man now addressing him. "I
know where the door is", he said abrasively and walked out.
