[USS Chimera] SD 240908.03 | Joint Log | MGen. Richard Sharpe & Cmdr. Rangi Summers

*** Infirmary * SB Unity ***

Richard disliked sickbays, infirmaries, medic stations and any other variation of the name. It was a view he knew was shared by many in the service, but was one of those inevitable evils that had to be done, especially for him. Being the recipient of on-going medical treatment since his last near-death encounter, he’d need to see the doctors eventually, so he chose to just get on with it.

Arriving at the Infirmary, he glanced around his surroundings, and took stock of the fact that Starfleet really didn’t make sickbays look pleasant to be in. Having spent considerable time in these things, he had kind of hoped they’d make them more… attractive.

" May I help you Sir?"     The nurse manning the main reception desk smiled a welcome to the newcomer.

“Yes, I’m looking for a…” He looked down at a padd he was holding. “Doctor Summers.”

She too checked a list and then looked up to him. " Please follow the signs to section C. The CMO will meet you there."

She watched him set off and put through a call to the CMOs office. " General Sharpe is on his way to meet you ma'am." she said. Rangi thanked her and pushed her chair back looking at the chrono as she did so. {Right on time} she thought and appreciated the fact.

Richard nodded curtly, and once out of eyesight, rolled his eyes and walked down the corridor. It reminded him of an NHS hospital, when he travelled through time some years ago and landed in Britain in the 1990’s. God how he loathed that place.

By the time he arrived, Rangi had left her office and was waiting to greet him personally. He made an impressive figure as he strode into the waiting area. " General Sharpe?" she said stepping forward. " I'm Commander Summers, CMO here. A pleasure to meet you." She offered a hand as he drew near.

Richard grasped the hand and shook it firmly. “Good to meet you, doctor.” He said, formally. “Just here for my new posting physical.”

"Please come this way." Rangi said, indicating the room she wished him to enter but led the way herself, standing aside for him and then closing the door. " I'm sure you know what to expect. " she said " If you'd care to make yourself comfortable on the bio bed."

Nodding, Richard sat on the edge of the bio bed and wiggled to get comfortable. “I trust they sent over my medical records from the Enterprise?” He asked.

" Oh yes." she replied. " I've been looking through them. " She waited until he seemed settled, glancing up at the overbed display and taking a medtricorder from the tray nearby. " Have you had any problems or concerns lately? " she asked beginning a routine scan.

“Just the usual dull ache in my chest, but Doc Roe on the Enterprise warned me that it would take time for the muscles in my chest to completely recover from the trauma of being seered by hot plasma.” Richard said. “I’m taking the Triazapol mix he prescribed for me to relieve the pain.”

" Do you find that its sufficient?" Rangi asked, making a note into the medical records. " I can prescribe an alternative. I see that he mentioned minor headaches and suggests that it could be  a side effect."

Richard nodded. “Also seems to irritate my ocular implant. Some mornings I wake up and it just won’t auto-align. Walk around in a half-blind stupor for an hour.”

She glanced at him, setting the tricorder aside and taking up a different tool. " And you didnt report it?" she asked, knowing that he hadnt for Doctor Roe would have made mention of it in Sharpe’s med history. She wondered what excuse he would provide.

“Nope.” He said. “Usually it clears up after an hour, and besides, I’m used to roughing it.”

"Might I suggest that that's unnecessary?" she said and moved closer to him. " Look straight ahead please. " She leaned forward, placing the tool in front of his eye. " Look left....right?...straight ahead.....there's no need to 'rough it' here you know. Thats fine." She stood up and made more notes on the medpadd.

“I’m a marine, doctor.” Richard said. “In the field, I don’t have the luxury of going back to an aid station every time I have a small aliment. After 35 years of that mentality, its hard to come crying to sickbay about a wee headache or an eye that runs on Windows Vista.”

" I appreciate that..." Rangi replied "...but you are not in the field now and after your recent injuries, its important that you report any problems. What might seem a small and insignificant irritant to you can be an indication of a problem. Heart and eye transplants might well be common place relatively speaking but they are still major operations. "

“I’m a big boy doctor, I can take care of myself. I always have.” Richard said.

Rangi looked down at him seeing the scars that told their own tale on the unshaven face. " With respect..." she said evenly, "...I expect my staff to take care of you whilst you remain on Unity. She gave a small smile that suggested he could argue if he liked but it wouldnt make any difference. She stepped back and lifted the medpadd again. " I'm going to alter the medication... " she said

" ...changing it to Asinocortilene. You need to take it as before, morning and evening. I think you'll find an improvement in a day or so." She moved to the work station and tapped in a few commands, turning back to him. " It will be waiting for you in the pharmacy."

Richard sat up and then got up off the bio bed. “Thank you doctor.” He said. “I look forward to meeting you again.”

" In less formal circumstances i hope." she replied and smiled to him. " The Pharmacy is second on the left as you go out."

“I hope so too, Commander.” Richard said. “Good afternoon.”

He walked to the door and went out and Rangi returned once more to his medical history, reading over the notes she had made. He was certainly one of the more interesting patients and she made an appointment reminder that would recall him again in a months time.
