[USS Chimera] SD 240908.03 | SB Unity | Joint Log, Cmdr Ohmsford & Lt Carpenter

OOC: Follows directly after Scott says goodbye to Mercedes before departure on the Chimera.

[ Cmdr Ohmsford's Office - SB Unity, Task Force Section ]

Bren had just finished up his work for the day and left his office when he heard a pair of footsteps hurrying up behind him in the corridor. He turned around to see a mass of brown curls coming up to him, the pretty face they framed seeming vaguely familiar.

"Commander Ohmsford," the voice said, slightly out of breath. "I'm sorry to catch you at a bad time, but I was hoping I could speak with you."

"What can I do for you, Lieutenant..." he replied, glancing at her collar.

"Lieutenant Mercedes Carpenter," she answered.

"Ah yes, you're the Medical Research Intel officer, if I'm not mistaken?"

"That's correct, sir," Mercedes replied with a quick nod. "But I was hoping for a temporary transfer... to the USS Chimera."

Bren frowned, not quite following. "Shouldn't you be speaking with the recruitment office then? Or with Captain Rojac?"

"Yes, sir, but... my request would be too late and would only be considered after the Chimera leaves for her next mission," she explained. "I would like to join the Science department and I thought with your recommendation, Captain Rojac would consider me at the last minute." Mercedes handed the padd over to Ohmsford. "This is my record. As you can see I served for a long time in Chimera's medical department, but I left because of personal reasons."

"Hmmm," Bren said as he read over her file. "You seem to be in quite a hurry, Dr Carpenter. Is it that important to you?"

"Yes, Commander," Mercedes nodded. "Let's just say I'm trying to make up for past mistakes."

Bren smiled at her words and thought that he should at least try to help her. "Your knowledge of science is quite sound. Obviously you're an expert in xenophysiology and biology, you completed the Advanced Science curriculum, good grades in astrophysics..." Looking up, he handed the padd back to her. "I'll make a recommendation to Captain Rojac. Science personnel have been scarce lately; you've served on the ship before, so it shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I believe they have an opening as deputy science chief. I remember reading something to that effect, so you might just be in luck."

Mercedes beamed and breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you sir, this means a lot to me."

"Then you best get packing, lieutenant. Just in case you have to leave soon," he smiled. "Good luck."

Watching the commander walk away, Mercedes felt a tingle of excitement. It was a bold move, but she wanted to make things right with Scott. Being an SSF officer was a dangerous career to have, especially in war time, and if something were to happen to Scott she needed to know that she'd at least done what she could to make things right by him, even if it meant making some career sacrifices.
