Martin was sleeping soundly and Rangi, standing in the
doorway of his darkened room, quietly turned away, closed
the door behind her and returned to the brightness of the
main living area.

The hour was late but she wanted to get some work completed,
knowing that she might receive a call from Commander
Ohmsford at any time, telling her to make preparation for
their return to Padassa.
She had arranged care for Martin with Laura who could come
at short notice so Rangi had no worries about it. Laura
cared for Martin in Rangis absence and the little boy was
happy in her company.
There were other things though that caused Rangi concern and
the main one at that moment was the vacant Deputy CMO
position on board Unity.

With Scott Fishers transfer to Chimera now completed, the
vacant position needed filling quickly if Rangi too was to
be away.
Unity had two infirmaries. The larger of the two devoted to
SSF personel was large with sixteen departments,
laboratories and a nursing staff of over eight hundred. The
smaller one on the outer ring was for civilain care and so
with such a variety, it needed a permanent medical officer
in control of it all. Although each department had its own
AMO in charge, there was still a need for a Chief and
Deputy.

Rangi had put out a call for applicants although she had
already drawn up a shortlist of possible candidates. The
problem was that many were some distance away and if she had
to leave suddenly, the position would be unmanned, something
she would not allow.

She thought over the names she had in mind as she replicated
herself a mug of hot chocolate before she returned to her
seat at the computer.
She sat down, sipping from the steaming mug as she did so
and was pleasantly surprised to see a message waiting for
her marked with the code of an application. She opened it
and immediately her interest was captured by a signature.

It was indeed a responce to the open deputy CMO position and
in formal phrasing, the applicant set out her interest in
the post, gave past experience and qualifications. Better
yet was the fact that she was nearby.... relatively
speaking... for she was on a transport bringing her to the
Starbase and would arrive within two days. Her aim of coming
to Unity was to discuss a possible position somewhere in 1st
Task Force but having seen the post offered, she had
applied.

All in all Rangi knew that she had to look no further, for
she knew the applicant and could not have chosen a better
doctor.It was perfect.
She drank her chocolate, rereading the application and with
the mug only half empty, set it aside and began the reply.

It was short and to the point. The applicant had all the
qualities needed to fulfill the demands of the DCMO position
and it would be hers upon arrival at Starbase Unity.
She was to report to the CMOs office upon arrival.

Rangi signed it, feeling a sense of relief that she could
leave the infirmary in good hands.
The message was sent and Rangi closed the terminal, leaned
back in her chair mug in hand and drained it before she
stood up, ready now to head for bed and a sound sleep.
