[surrounding starbase 234]

The Oppenhiemer came out of warp into maelstrom of torpedo and disruptor fire all around.Ahead of the ship were the pieces of debris from what seemed to be an Akira class vessel. Also ahead was starbase 234, which was presently surrounded by 10 warbirds, all taking shots at the base.

" Alright. Helm take us, if you can, between the warbirds and the base. Take as many shots at the warbirds as you can. See if you can get them to break off. " " Aye, sir" replied the helmsman and the ship started to corkcrew, firing phasers as she went. The ship made it through the warbirds and came about, continuing to fire her phasers. Riggs ordered," Ok. Keep us between them and the base. Tatical..Thomson, Where are the other warbirds? I only counted ten." Thomson responded," Sir..it looks like several 'birds are engaged with the other vessels who arrived ahead of us. The rest are moving in for their attack runs." As he spoke, another group of romulan vessels dove at the station, firing disruptors. One of the warbirds broke off and headed for the Oppenhiemer. Her shots slammed into the shields, causing the ship to rock violently.

Riggs pulled himself back into his chair and waited for the status report. " Sir, shields are at 83 percent and holding." He nodded to himself." Good so far. Take us to full impulse and follow that warbird.Time for us to return the favor." The helmsman nodded and plotted the course needed to chase the romulan vessel. A few moments later they were right behind her." Full phaser and torpedo spread. Try to take her shields!" Riggs watched as the shots slammed home." Thomson?" " Their shields are down!" Riggs smiled." Power up the drilling lasers! When it's ready, fire it at that bird!" Moments later, a heavy beam hit the ship. As they watched, the warbird started to drift, massive explosions racing through the vessel." yes! Sir, that bird is going to be out of action for a while."

[ Sometime later]

By this time, three other starfleet vessels had been knocked out of action. The romulans had come up with the tactic of drawing vessels to the habitat section of the station, then ambushing the vessel. The oppenhiemer had shifted over to try to prevent anymore casualties.

"Sir, I have two vessels entering the area. Warp signatures indicate starfleet vessels, the Chimera and the Manticore." {Only two?} thought Riggs{ What the hell?} Pretty soon, orders started reaching the ship. The Oppenhiemer complied as best as she could. Suddenly, She started to twist in space, shields knocked out by a mass number of disruptor shots.

+taps+ Riggs to engineering! Whats our status on shields? The response was: + Gone completely, sir. I would need a spacedock and several crews to repair them. We also lost the engines and weapons, sir.+

Riggs sat in his chair and thought a moment. Thomson looked at his screens." Sir, we have five warbirds bearing down on us. What are your orders?" " Evacuate the ship." Soon only he, Thomson and Taylor, his exec, remained on board. The warbirds were now circling the Oppenhiemer, but had not yet fired. Riggs cleared his throat." Computer, set self-destruct, Riggs nine two Alpha execute." The other two officers entered their codes. Two minutes later, the ship exploded, taking out three warbirds and disabling the other two.

*** Task Force Sickbay * USS Chimera-B ***

Section 5 of Deck 27, provided a small and comfortable room
with a wide viewing window.
It was used by patients recovering from minor ops or for
those awaiting results but when Chimera dropped out of warp,
it held small groups of medical personel whose duty posts
were closest to the section.

Many had never been in a battle situation before and the
sight outside stunned them all to silence.

They observed the beginning of the engagement between the
Warbirds and their own ship but could see some of the major
battle already raging around them.
Their faces changed colour, red, yellow, green, reflecting
the explosions which were amazing in their ferociousness.

They hadn't long to be spectators and few wanted to be, when
a call to their posts had them hurrying away, leaving noone
to witness the growing devastation outside.

At first, although they knew from the impacts that Chimera
was hit, there were few casualties.
Noone came to have minor bumps and bruises attended to and
none were willing to leave their positions from cuts and
abrasions although some required it... but soon...too
soon...more serious wounds needed attention and a growing
stream of crewmen arrived at the sickbay.

When they explained their position and the scenes they had
left, it was possible for the sickbay crew to get a vivid
idea of how the battle progressed.

Cargo bay three, one of two transformed into emergency
triage and treatment rooms reported a growing number of
crewmen too but the medical teams were well trained and
found nothing they couldnt deal with...until the power
failed.

Rangi and Lucy, in the process of treating a lieutenants
dislocated arm and broken wrist, were plunged into darkness.

It lasted only a few seconds before the emergency lighting
flickered into play.

"Commander! " Nurse Johnson called out. " Cargo bay six
reports loss of power..they have none at all."

Rangi cursed the power supply silently, concentrating on the
job in hand. She accepted a medical tool from Lucys
outstretched hand
" Tell bay three to evacuate to Deck 20..use the emergency
quarters. Keep me informed of Ops responce."

The nurse gave a brief nod and turned away. Lucy and Rangi
exchanged a glance over the patients prone figure.
They both new the odds for Chimera and the Federation ships
as a whole but neither voiced any platitudes to the other.

{ Is the Qashqai there?} Rangi wondered {...is he alright?}

***Bridge, Deck One, USS Chimera-B***

Anya calmly waited at her station waiting for something to happen.  They had entered the Charos System and so far there had been no sign of the Romulans.  The Quasar was badly damaged and the McCoy had suffered an attack from what they claimed as Erassian Terrorists.  Some how that didn't add up, the Erassians had never been fond of the Federation but suicide bombings on a Federation Medical Ship?  No there was definitely some other factor at work and Anya didn't have a clue what it could be other than some sort of Romulan influence involved.

Anya sent a quick message to the CSEC on the McCoy asking him to send her any information that he had on the attackers.  She returned her thoughts to the situation at hand and resumed monitoring the surrounding area.  Her mundane activities swiftly ended as her Tactical console quickly lit up.  "Four Romulan Warbirds De-Cloaking" she called.

***Reinholt Institute,  Charos VI***

Major Scott Walters paced back and forward in the small control room of the Research and Development Centre that he was in charge of.  The thing was acting now was in direct violation of his orders from Colonel Westbridge and defying her usually meant death.  He wondered what would his older sister do?  Sylvia had always bee the go getter in the family joining the Erassian Alliance Military as soon as she was able and sure enough he had followed her in expecting to do nothing more than follow in her footsteps.  Somewhere along the line though he had gotten ahead of his sister, he was promoted to Major and had control of the entire Reinholt Institute whereas Sylvia was merely a Captain and still only in charge of the EAS Ostia, an IG4GW in the First Fleet.  In essence he had left his sisters shadow long behind him and yet he still looked up to her.  What should he do?  Follow Sylvia's example or Colonel Westbridge's orders?  In his heart of hearts he knew what he had to do.  "Ready the weapon"

***Eigorson Plaza, Charos VI***

Eigorson Plaza had once been a vibrant focal point of the thriving Central Business District in Elgamiya the Capital and first colony of Charos VI.  But now Eigorson Plaza was empty, a barren wasteland populated only by the buildings covered in the corporate logos of  Mega-corporations and Banks whose staff had long since died horribly from the plague delivered upon this planet by it's enemies.  The people who had likely thronged the Plaza had likely watched their skin melt off and drowned in their own blood or if they were lucky had taken their own lives early on.  The people were gone life had forsaken this place, only one focal point remained here.  The Eigorson Spire as it was locally known wasn't the tallest building in the city by far only measuring a mere 5000 ft.   It looked like a fusion of a tall cuboid and a pyramid which was slightly taller sitting at a 45 degree angle to the cuboid structure's alignment.  Viewed from above it looked like an eight pointed star.

The ground in the square began to shake.  The windows of the buildings began to reverberate violently, a few of them even shattering dramatically.  Giant straight cracks appeared on the centre of the outer pyramid's surfaces and slowly but surely the building began to split apart into five separate pieces with the one in the centre looking a little like the Washington Monument on Earth.

A loud humming noise filled the air and sparks of energy shot between the segments of the outer pyramid and the central pillar like a bolt of lightning with a thunderous crack.  Slowly the sparks increased in number, frequency and intensity till the noise was overwhelming and the central pillar began to glow white.

***Reinholt Institute,  Charos VI***

"The Second Fleet has arrived and has begun to engage the Romulan Forces!" Came the shout from the officer observing the sensor readouts from the Planetary Defence Network.

Major Scott Walters watched as the weapon became fully charged.  "Prepare to target Warbird Echo once it clears five clicks from the Starfleet Vessel."   The holographic view screen changed perspective from that of the external view of the weapon to that of the targeting sensors of the weapon.  The Venator Class Warbird appeared large in fully three dimensional form.  It was an extremely powerful warship but in the face of what was about to be unleashed it was like a child's toy.  The targeting reticule went from green to red.  One word came from the mouth of Major Walters and it was delivered with a surety that he had never held before "Fire."

***Eigorson Plaza, Charos VI***

The Eigorson Spire glowed brighter and brighter until there was a blinding flash like the detonation of a nuclear weapon.  As the ultra bright beam lanced upwards from the weapon a shockwave reverberated out from the weapon shattering all the windows in the Plaza and dislodging loose pieces of masonry.

***Reinholt Institute,  Charos VI***

Major Walters let out a sigh of relief.  "It worked well for a weapon that was built twenty years ago and has never been even test fired before.  Send the coded message to General Ivanov that we need to meet once the current situation has abated.  The only other thing we have to prepare for is facing the wrath of Colonel Westbridge."

***Bridge, Deck One, USS Chimera-B***

Anya shouted her reply "Closest thing we have on record is the Sharkapult!"  A drop of cold sweat dripped down her spine as she finally realised where she had seen the Sharkapult before.  It hadn't been a real life encounter, no she would have remembered that far easier.  No instead the place she remembered something like the Sharkapult from before was the last training simulation that they had performed when she graduated from flight training in the Erassian Alliance Military.  The simulation was a no win situation  essentially the Erassian pilots version of Starfleet's Kobayashi Maru.  And the enemy that they had fought in that simulation each one of the enemy fighters was equipped with a sharkapult...the name of the enemy came back to her in a rush.  "Gods help us, they're real. The Karaf."  She breathed feeling more helpless at that moment than any other time.  More than anything else she knew for sure that something old and powerful was stirring and it had something to do with the Karaf.

***Study, Lunar Shrine, Trill***

Her nails tapped the surface of the desk impatiently as she read the latest report from her agents that she had tailing the Betazed woman.  It had been over twenty five years since she had last seen that frightened child on the Dominion occupied planet.  Over quarter of a century since the last time the enemy had tried to venture into their realm.  Whilst they had barely managed to stop the incursion of that one ship their efforts at curbing the more subtle elements of the enemies plan had been far less successful.  A small fist hammering on the study door broke her from her musings.  A young novitiate barged in panting and out of breath.  The novitiate spoke with a mixture of excitement and panic "High Priestess...she's waking up!"

[USS Chimera] SD 240810.25 Duty Log, LtCmdr Trzetrzelewska (XO)

= USS Chimera - Bridge =

As the Chimera's helm officer pulled the ship upwards, Natalia caught a glimpse of a dying warbird, one who's singularity drive had lost containment and literally causing the ship to slowly implode in a gruesome, jerking manner with showering sparks. It was a D'deridex class, with more than 1,500 crew onboard, collapsing under its own stardrive technology.

Such was the sight that for a moment she paid no attention to her console and only looked back when she heard Xerxes call out, "Three more warbirds on our tail... one unknown, the other Norexan class!"

Natalia listened closely and then quickly looked back at the science console where she was standing, quickly performing a tactical scan of the third warbird. It was a smaller vessel with limited firepower and powerful sensor emitters. It also boasted a menacing forward cannon that reminded her of a Galor-class main beam weapon.

"Incoming plasma torpedoes!" Xerxes yelled from behind the tactical station.

"Dexter, fortify aft shields," Rojac ordered calmly. "Xerxes, return torpedo fire."

"Aye, sir," Martin replied, and a moment later the ship rocked as several plasma torpedoes detonated against the shields, causing several consoles to flicker briefly as power distribution was disrupted before coming back to life.

"Shields down to 75%," Natalia said as she read out the damage report on next to her console. She glanced back at the tactical scanner and saw the smaller warbird speed forward between the two large Norexan class ships. A spike in the energy readings alarmed her and as she turned to report it, Xerxes said:

"Sir! The Norexan class warbirds have launched their fighters," the Trill tactical officer said.

"Helm, bring us about and execute tactical maneuver Epsilon Beta 12," Rojac said and Lieutenant Dacour responded with lightening speed, her fingers tapping over the keys before Natalia could object.

"Sir, wait!," the XO said as she rushed forward.

But it was too late. The small warbird, a Tal'Shiar science vessel, fired its primary beam weapon at the large Chimera class vessel, slamming with full force into the starboard shields above the nacelle. The force of the impact caused Natalia to fall down and injure her wrist as she tried to break her fall.

"Sir, our shields are falling!" Dexter shouted in a panicked voice.

"What the..." Rojac said just as Natalia got up and made it back to the science console.

"It was a shield inversion beam, sir!" Natalia reported as her eyes glanced over the information the scrolled across the monitor. "It's inverted our shield modulation frequency, causing our shields to collapse. We need to drop the remaining shields in order to reset the modulation frequency!"

"Romulan fighters are firing on us!" Xerxes called out as the ship shook, this time resulting in blackouts and sparking consoles. Without shields, they were sitting ducks.

"You heard Commander Trzetrzelewska, Lieutenant Dexter," Rojac ordered. "Do it, now!"
