[USS Chimera] SD: 240901.10 Duty Log Cmdr. Wellignton

=/\= Chief Counselor's Office =/\=
Athena and Mimi were going over file and notes together.  It made the process easier for both of them; since they had both been out of commission for a couple of days.

"What about this one," Mimi asked pointing to the new additions of notes in one of the files that laid electronically on the desk top.

Athena was pulled from her thoughts and she quickly reviewed the information in front of her that Mimi had indicated and nodded her head, finally saying, "Yes, that fine ... you did a nice job."  She tapped the desk top closing the once file and opening the next.  It was a file of one of the new members of the crew, and Athena looked at the picture a moment longer than some of the others.  "I .... ,"  she paused staring the oil and water mixture comment in conjunction with another's name, "I already talked to Captain Xerxes about these two," she commented.

Mimi nodded, "That's good... did you finally get her pinned down for an evaluation?"  She had to keep herself focused on what they were doing not how Gustav's physical therapy session was going.

The two of them had been working for a couple of hours when the more yellowish tinting to the lights began to flash.  Athena looked at Mimi, "We'll finish this later ... I think I should visit the bridge."  The junior counselor nodded and made a hasty retreat as Athena closed the files and secured them.  She then made her own retreat and was a bit surprised at how easily she was able to make her way to the bridge.

Mimi sat in what was supposed to be the waiting room waiting to hear
word about how Gustav's surgery was going, but it seemed more like a
prison as she paced the length of the room again biting in worry on
her lower lip. She looked up and checked the time on the wall chrono
and let out a sigh. {This is taking to long.... what I haven't I
gotten another update... I know they know I'm still here.... a nurse
keeps peeking in.}

A nurse peered around the corner, "Miss…. perhaps you'd like to go do
some work or something and will call you when the lieutenant is out of
surgery."

Her eyes practically threw flames as she stared at the nurse for a
full minute before biting out in clipped even tones, "I will remain
here and you will bring me an update.... now.......... please." Mimi
almost choked on the please as she watched the nurse's gaze fall to
the floor. {Oh, that can't be good.}

"They had a complication and we haven't heard anything new since
then," the nurse said calmly and with some remorse that the news
wasn't better.

Mimi slid into the seat that wasn't far behind to where she had
recently paced when a doctor walked in. She popped back up and the
doctor took her hand as if doing so would calm her now rapidly beating
pulse. "He's come through and is in recovery, but it was felt that it
might be good if you were there for when he first wakes up."

The doctor led her to a private room and Mimi sat in the chair by the
bed and held his hand. She let her forehead rest on his shoulder.

Gustav was dreaming, he was in a field of green with a crashed ship in
the centre, it looked like it had been there for some time as it was
over grown, has he approached the wreck he started to hear noises
coming from it, then something large came at him striking Gustav on
his right side, just then he awoke with a jump.

His sudden movement almost made her scream, but instead she asked
calmly as her heart raced, "Are you all right?"

"I'm ok… I was just dreaming" Gustav said groggily.

"What was it about," she asked as her heart rate began to return to normal.

"I don't know, it wasn't nice anyway" he replied to Mimi's question

"Does it hurt much.... Do you need anything," she asked.

Gustav looked at Mimi and smiled and said "not really, what ever they
are giving me seems to be working"

"How are you feeling, I hope all this isn't making you any worse"
Gustav asked concerned about Mimi's health.

"I'm fine," she smiled and brushed a quick kiss over his lips.

"That's good" Gustav said relived but knowing that Mimi probably
wouldn't tell him if she was over doing it.

Gustav sat up in the bed and looked at his new right arm, he was
surprised at how lifelike it looked and felt as he brushed his left
hand over it, that's when he decided now was as good a time as any to
try and use it.

Kroitzer tried to move the arm, at first all he could do was make it
shake a little then with a little more will power it moved up {this is
hard work}, he then moved it over to Mimi's face and clumsily used it
to cup her left cheek.

"You're doing well," she said encouraging even though his hand rested
a bit heavy on her cheek." I bet it will be even easier once you've
had some physical therapy and a bit more practice.

Gustav smiled sweetly at Mimi knowing that she was trying to save him
from getting despondent. "I hope so, otherwise you could end up with a
bruised cheek if I keep dunting you like that" he said trying to make
a joke of his clumsiness with his new arm.

"I'm sure its just like anything new it will just take some practice,"
reassured as she leaned in to hug him. "I'm not hurting you am I,"
she asked giving him a bit more of an enthusiastic hug than she had
originally intended. She was just very happy to see him doing so
well.

Hugging Mimi back Gustav said, "Nah, I'm fine you don't need to worry."

"I'm just waiting until I get out of here and get to tinkering with
this thing,"
Gustav said while looking at his arm.

Mimi gave him a look that said, 'do you really think you should do that,'
but she didn't say a thing.

[USS Chimera] SD 240901.10 || CO Log || Capt Rojac ||

[Bridge - Deck 1 - USS Chimera]

Rojac sat in the Captain's chair and pulled up Captain Xerxes flight plan on the armrest display. Her Lancers and SunGod would take an indirect route, circumnavigating the circumference of outpost 0071's sensor radius. The cloaked shadows, however, would take a more direct route. 1Lt Reese had given them the classified sensor frequencies of the outpost so that their cloaks could be specially calibrated to avoid detection. Scardona and his engineers even changed the transponder frequencies so they could avoid friendly detection that way.

"Captain." Reese called up from her seat at the port station at the fore of the bridge. "Captain Xerxes reports they are ready for launch.

After the senior officer's briefing, Rojac ordered helm to take the Chimera three parsecs beyond 0071's sensor radius. Xerxe's team would have a short flight to their destinations, and the Chimera could warp there in thirty minutes if things got too hairy. "Clearance for launch granted." Rojac said. "But please, no missing arms this time."

"Aye sir."

"Helm," Rojac ordered. "I'm transmitting a flight plan to you now. We're taking a counter clockwise patrol around the circumference. Engage at three-quarters impulse."

"Aye sir." The Bajoran office replied. Rojac was beginning to like her, even if she wasn't exactly Pazla Dacour.

"Tactical, take us to Yellow Alert. Lieutenant Reese, I want all alpha shift personnel on stand-by for scramble." Rojac ordered.

"Aye sir." Reese replied as the klaxons sounded and the track lighting along the ceiling changed hue. Throughout the ship, all personnel went into a heightened state of awareness.

Rojac leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers. All there was to do now was to sit and wait until Shadow squadron reported back. Engineering was preparing the transporters and the computer for their delicate transporter operation. Security was busy outfitting their two-man infiltration teams for the insertion. Operations was collaborating the between the necessary day-to-day operations of the ship and the needs of the mission, and Medical always had their hands full. Rojac had Ra-Zerphimi at the science station pouring over passive scans of the sector on the lookout for any singularity drive emissions or stray tachyon pulses, just incase the Romulans slipped up. So far nothing came up. Of course, it could never be that easy.

As the Captain watched the fighters launch from their hangars on the viewscreen and the stars slowly flow by, he wondered if his executive officer was having any luck with the prisoners in the brig.

[Conference Room - Deck 1 - USS Chimera]

"Over to you, Captain," she said as she took her seat next to Rojac.

"Right." Rojac stood with a nod toward his executive. "Thank you, Commander." He stood tall and straightened out the bottom of his tunic beneath the strange belt that taskforce had issued him. "I have to things for the rest of you. The first dealing with the mission, the second dealing with the recent incidents aboard this vessel. The mission comes first, however."

The Captain cleared his throat, and several of the senior staff shifted awkwardly in their seats. "Captain Xerxes has already received my request for a recon flight with the Shadow squadron we have aboard. Captain how is that progressing?"

"We're prepping the fighters for launch as we speak.  Whilst Ghost Flight will be the only ones doing the actual recon of the Sensor Station.  I've planned for the Lancer Squadron and Sun God to remain on backup just outside of the Sensor Station's detection range.  The Lancers will be carrying an A2 Loadout...whilst I don't expect there to be trouble on this mission I prepare for the worst anyway.  The outline should be on your desk in around 15 minutes although we can leave as soon as the fighters are loaded Captain."  Anya replied. safety precaution." Rojac stood upright again and began to

"Excellent. Keep me updated on the progress, Captain." Rojac said. "Engineering has been working on a way to transport through the ouptpost's cloak and shields. Commander Scardonna, would you care to explain the details?"

Scardona nodded and cleared his throat, beginning his briefing. "Penetrating the cloak shouldn't be difficult. We have the specifications of the outposts cloaking device, and by rigging the main deflector to emit a tachyon pulse at precisely the right frequency, we can force the stations cloak offline. Now, the difficult part lies in transporting through the shields. We've been able to map out the frequency patterns of the outposts shield grid. By doing so, we've found that at fixed times during the grid's rotation, small 'holes' appear. These openings last for approximately three seconds, so transporting will be tricky. We'll have to leave it to the computer, in all honesty. And to make things even more complicated, we can only transport two at a time."

Curtis then stood and tapped a few controls on the main conference table, bringing up a large holographic projection of the outposts technical schematics. He then pointed to three specific locations, all about equidistant from each other.

"It takes about 60 seconds for the frequency pattern to reset, so if we wanted to beam more then two people into a specific area, we would have to wait at least a minute before transporting another team. However, there are three 'holes' in the grid, so we can transport every 20 seconds to these separate locations. Finally...transporting out will be much, much more difficult, so I recommend that once inside, the strike team proceed to disable the shield grid, if possible." His briefing concluded, Curtis nodded and sat down.

"Thank you, Commander." Rojac replied. "Security, you will have very little personnel to work with in the initial transport. Make the best of it. Run a few simulations in the holodecks for covert infiltration and hostage rescue. Remember, we don't want the station to be compromised further, we just want the Romulan agents aboard taken out so we can investigate the extent of the damage they've done."

"Yes sir." Jardan replied, looking a little weaker than usual due to his recent injury. "I will get Adams and Johnson on it straight away. Is there a way I can get a hold of the blueprints of the station?"

"I'll have First Lieutenant Reese forward you the necesary schematics, as she has the clearance. Can you do that for me, Lieutenant?" The Captain asked.

Jade nodded in response to the Captain's question and made a few notes on her tablet, so she could remember what she needed to get done. She already had a huge list of things that needed to get done, but this made the top knowing that it came straight from the Captain.

"Good." Rojac nodded. "Article number two. There have been many incidents abaord that I am not very happy with. Some could not have been helped; Commander Summers was poisoned onboard UNITY, and Ensign Hopeler's illness was rather unexpected. The others, however, could have been avoided." Roajc leaned forward and placed both of his hands palms down on the table. "I would think, that with a crew of seven hundred and twenty personnel, someone would have realized Commander Wellington's strange behavior before I did, and made sure she received the proper medical attention. I am dissappointed in security, for
allowing dangerous, undercover Romulan agents access to materials from which they could improvise a weapon from. This was an incident of inept observation an lack of attention to detail. It is standard procedure, when a prisoner of this caliber is present, to hold them in solitary confinement with NO access to ANY material item. Beam their food directly onto the floor, no cutlery or dinnerware is to be provided."

Rojac continued his lecture, feeling more like a parent berating his child by the minute. "We have been lacking in our safety measures as well, and the Deputy Chief Engineer has lost an arm because of it. This is unacceptable. Everyone learns in starship maitenence 101 at the academy to make sure the power is diverted or the machinery in inoperative before making modifications. It's a standard safety precaution." Roajc stood upright again and began to pace behind the backs of his staff aroudn the table. "Ladies and gentlemen, this ship is the flagship of Special Forces, and the First Taskforce. As such we are expected to be an example to the rest of the fleet. Lately, I feel, we have done a poor job of being so. We need to step up our level of professionalism, and focus on our duties as starfleet officers."

"This is a time of war, as you all know, and in times of war the SSF is called forth to hold the frontlines in battle. We can't afford to loose focus or to be distracted. From this day forward, if anyone in your department fails to uphold their duties as a member of starfleet, if they fail to follow all procedures, or if they do any less than one-hundred percent of their abilities then i want to know about it. I will not tolerate anything less aboard my ship, is that understood?"

"Yes Sir". The reply was uttered by all the senior officers though a little our of sync.

Rangi frowned and bit her lower lip thoughtfully for she had always prided herself on keeping a well run department. Though she encouraged a friendly atmosphere amongst her teams, it had never been suggested to her before that her department was lacking. Scott had been spending alot of time on her care, something he had been ordered to do by the Commodore but even so, she felt the critism hit home and did not like it. Things would have to change. She looked up as the XO spoke.

"Depending on our schedules, the Captain and myself will continue to make unscheduled inspections of departments as has been done the last few weeks, so I expect everyone to be ready at all times. A lot has changed in the last few months, least of all the new uniforms," Natalia said, glancing down at the new uniform she wore, "but I think it accurately symbolizes the fact that there has been a shift in our traditions among Chimera members and, starting with this new ship, I want all department heads to adopt a stricter and more formal attitude towards their assistants while on duty and the chain of command in general. Insubordination of any kind will not be tolerated," Natalia said, look sternly at each of the staff.

Anya had to suppress a smile.  The Erassian Alliance Military had a number of jokes about insubordination in Starfleet a popular one was about a court martial over a cadet wearing his tube socks on the wrong feet.

"Lieutenant Jardan, I would like you to focus on the mission at hand, please leave the interrogation of the prisoners over to me," the XO said with a nod.

"Are their any questions? If not you are dismissed." Rojac said.

Jade walked out of her office into the chaotic nest of the ODCC, "I
need updates." Jade said standing in the middle of the ODCC, so she
could see the entirety of the ODCC.

"We need five more minuets Lieutenant." Lieutenant Vaughn said not
looking up from what he was doing. Rocco Vaughn was the acting deputy
chief of operations as he went back helping a Ensign.

Jade nodded and walked over to a console to look over the EPS power
outputs for the shields and cloaking device Jade was still getting
used to working with clocking devices mainly because ground troops
don't have a lot of use for them. So, jade decided to take look at the
shields and see what was going on with them knowing without shields
the ship was useless.

Just then Lt Vaughn walked over to where she was, "heres the updates
you wanted." Vaughn said setting the tablet down on the desk and
looking at the monitor that Jade was looking at. "I've never seen
readings like that before." Vaughn said scratching his chin continuing
to watch the screen change every second with new readings.

"Same." Jade said, "I need someone to head up a team to take a look at
the EPS readings for the cloaking device." Jade said looking up at
Vaughn.

"Sure. What will I be looking for?" Vaughn asked as he added it to the
list of things that he needed to do.

"Same thing that is happening with the shields I've been getting
reports saying that they're getting weird readings." Jade said taking
a look at the newest updates seeing that the queue program was up and
running for the replicators and hopefully that'll reduce the problems
with the replicators.

Vaughn just nodded as he headed off to start on working the figuring
out what's going on with the cloaking device, "I'll get an update for
you by the end of my shift." Vaughn said smiling.

Jade just nodded and got back to work looking at the EPS readings and
comparing them to the most recent ones to get an idea what might be
happening with them.

"I wish you would change your mind."

"My place is on UNITY ... with Mai and Rachel," Rick said as he
finished packing in the apartment that he, Mai and Rachel had
shared over the past three weeks.

Mai and Rachel departed for UNITY a couple of days earlier,
leaving Rick, who had one more appointment with Dr. Montalban.

"You, Mai and Rachel would be better off here," Sarah argued.
"Especially since Rachel is just a child, there's a war going and that
Mai is pregnant."

"I would feel better with Mai and Rachel here, too. But they're lots
of children on UNITY, and me and Mai are needed there."

"I'm sure Starfleet could get by without you two on UNITY," Sarah
said.

"Maybe. But it not be right," Rick said, closing his Starfleet issued
bag.

"I know, it's just ..."

Sarah walked closer to her brother-in-law.

"It's just that everyday I go over the list of those killed or missing
in action. And everyday, I expect to see Trent's name or the
Lancelot as one of the ships missing. At least I would feel better
with you, Mai and Rachel here."

"UNITY a tough starbase," Rick reassured her. "Rommies could not
destroy it before. We safe there. Safer than most. You Starfleet
officer. You understand."

"I do," she said. "I want you to be careful, OK?"

Rick nodded as Sarah hugged him, a tear flowing down her left
cheek.

"I gotta go," Rick said.

Sarah just nodded, wiping her cheek as they walked out of the
room.

Athena stepped off the turbolift.  She stood as if glued to the spot for several seconds.  {Which way... }  Finally she turned with a sigh and began moving down the hallway.  She followed the unimaginative flooring path until she came to a door that she paused in front of.  She looked at for a couple of seconds shook her head and walked down two more doors.  She paused again staring intensely at the door.  {Is it ... or... isn't it?}  She rubbed her hand over the door as if that would tell her something.  After a few moments her hand feel to her side and she pushed the only code she could think of while staring at the door into the keypad beside it.  Her sigh when the door slide open was almost as loud as the door's hiss.

She walked through to the bedroom and upon seeing the queen-sized bed; she fell into it with a contented sigh.  She rolled over unto her back and lifted her hand up to look at the ring on her left hand.  She stayed like that for a while thinking over one of the questions that Rangi had asked her.  {That really is a lovely ring  ...From?} she recalled.

Athena gave a sigh when no answer still came to mind.  She got up a moved into the bathroom and started the shower.  She striped off the clothes she was wearing and stepped under the spray.  {I know some things take me a minute or two yet ... but why can't I seem to remember that one small piece.}  She tried to let all her errant thoughts drift away with the water as it flowed out the drain.  {Rest and relax those are the orders..and I shall .... try} she thought as she turned off the shower and grabbed a towel.  Moving from the bathroom to the bedroom, she finished toweling dry and slipped between her silky green sheets.

*** Sickbay * USS Chimera-C ***

"This will be a light anaesthetic. You'll feel generally
relaxed and
able to understand what's going on. Before we begin though,
is there
anything else you want to ask?"

It was the morning of Gustav's scheduled surgery and he,
Rangi and
Alexander Rice were in one of Chimera's surgical suites.
Gustav sat on
the edge of the bed. Above him the large overhead cluster
shone
brightly. Nearby were two med trolleys, one set out with
medical tools
and on the other lay what appeared to be an arm. It was
referred to as
an RPL...a Robotic Prosthetic Limb...and was remarkably
lifelike from
the 'skin' colour right down to little freckles. Rice had
explained in
detail how biosensors would detect signals from Gustav's
nervous and
muscular systems and
assured Gustav that the result would be good. Gustav should,
rice
said, be able to carry out most of his working requirements,
given a
little practice.

Looking the Dr Rice Gustav asked "will I be able to tinker
with the
arm… you know modify it after the surgery?"

"Tinker with it?" Rice looked aghast. " It will do
everything its
designed to do… there wont be need to 'tinker'" Rangi gave
rice a
'meaningful' look and turning to Gustav said: " I'm sure
you'll be
able to look it over."

"That's good" Gustav said adding, "I might be able to add
some
engineering essentials to it"

" Indeed." Rangi said, ending the conversation before Rice
could say
anything. " Ok...shall we begin? If you would like to lie
back...
that's fine. Just relax."

Gustav lay back a little nervous as he had never had any
major surgery
before but then again he had never had an arm ripped off
before.

She picked up the hypospray ready loaded with the
anaesthetic and
pressed it against Gustav's neck.

Gustav began to feel more and more relaxed until the point
that he was
almost asleep, it was an odd feeling being awake but not
being able to
move, feel or talk but to be able to hear and understand
what was
happening around him.

It had been agreed between the two that Rice would lead the
surgery
and Rangi would assist. Aware that Gustav would be able to
hear them,
they gave a sort of running commentary, explaining in
laymen's terms
what was happening. They began by implanting electrode
arrays, which
the biosensors would detect. It was delicate work and took
some time.
Something they referred to as needles, which were in fact
not, were implanted into muscles and Rice explained how they
would
work, thinking that Gustav would appreciate the theory.

Gustav listened carefully to what the Doctors were saying,
not really
knowing exactly what they were doing but he could imagine
what they
were doing from the description the pair were giving him
while they
performed the surgery.

"Now lets try the arm." Rice said and Rangi lifted it from
the
trolley. Rice stimulated a muscle in Gustav's shoulder and
the fingers
on the arm clenched tight. "Excellent." Rice declared and
Rangi laid
the limb back in its place as the fingers relaxed.
"We're over half way now" she told Gustav who lay staring up
at the
cluster as though in a dream.

Kroitzer was laying there on the table thinking about how he
could
improve the arm when he heard Dr Rice say " Ahh..damnit..."
very quietly to
himself probably hoping Gustav wouldn't hear him, he then
said
something about heavy bleeding from the Brachial artery,
Gustav
started to worry as although he didn't know a lot about
anatomy he did
know heavy bleeding from an artery wasn't good.

The next thing Gustav heard was Rangi telling Rice that she
was going
to put Kroitzer under a full anaesthetic, Rangi approached
Gustav with
a hypospray in her hand and placed it at Gustav's neck then
everything
went black.

It was perhaps just as well that Gustav would have no
recollection of the following events.
Hypercoagulin stopped the massive bleed but damage had
already been done and a few tense moments passed when
Gustavs vital signs made a rapid drop. Rangi worked to
stabilise him as Rice continued with the surgery but it was
some minutes before Gustav responded well to the 20mg of
Legrazine.

"Done." Rice stepped back, relief clearly written on his
face. " How's he doing?" he asked Rangi.

"Well enough...now." she replied "If you're finished I'll
administer Triptacederin and then we can think about walking
him up."
Rice nodded. " It went well, all things considered." he
said " Pity about the nanotech though."

Rangi glanced towards Rice who was staring thoughtfully at
the sleeping Gustav.
She said nothing but added a phial to
the hypospray, pressed it against Gustavs skin and fired
the medication into his system.

=Trent and Sarah Rodgers' House=
=Near San Jose, California, Earth=

Rachel and Annie sat on the living room floor eating sandwiches.
Rachel had her teddy bear Nicky, while Annie had her stuffed
targ.

"Mommy says that my new baby brother should be here in a
couple of months," Annie said, nibbling on her sandwich. "I
never had a baby brother or even sister before. Mom said she
never had a brother or sister before either until she married
daddy."

Rachel looked saddened.

"What's wrong, Ray Ray," Annie said, scooting closer to her
cousin.

"I ... I never had a baby brother or sister either," she almost
whispered. "I want one, too."

"Really!" Annie said, looking upset.

Rachel nodded.

"MOOOOMMMMMY!" Annie yelled out.

Seconds later, just after she had returned from the dock, Sarah
entered the room.

"What is it, honey? What's wrong?" Sarah asked, worried.

"Rachel wants a baby brother or sister, too," Annie said. "Can
we get her one?"

"Oh, uhh ..." Sarah said.

She wanted to tell Rachel the truth just as she had wanted to
tell Rick. But, that was up to Mai ... and now Rick.

"I don't want one unless Rachel has one," Annie protested,
crossing her arms.

'Think Sarah, think,' she thought.

"Well, Annie, that's uh ... that's up to your Uncle Ricky and Aunt
Mai," Sarah said.

"Oh," Annie replied just as Rick and Mai entered the room,
holding hands.

"Uncle Ricky! Aunt Mai! Rachel wants a baby brother or sister,
too," Annie said. "Mommy says that's up to you."

Rick looked at Sarah and she just shrugged. He then knelt down
next to Rachel and smiled.

"Well ... sweetheart ... that, that may be possible," Rick said, then
looked up at Mai.

MaiKai kneeled down so she was at eye level to her daughter, "You
really want one too, huh? Just like Annie?"

"Uh huh," Ray was making puppy dog eyes.  You could tell she
wanted more company then she was getting.  Annie and Martin
couldn't be around like a little brother or sister could be.

"Well ..." Rick said, reaching and holding Mai's hand. "You going to
have one. You going to have either brother or sister."

"Really?" Rachel's eyes widened.

"Yes, really," Mai smiled and pulled her daughter into a hug.

"Why is your belly not as big as mommy's?" Annie asked.

"Ummm... Sarah?" Mai figured Sarah should answer the questions
to her own daughter.  It would make things a bit simpler.

"It, uh ... it takes time," Sarah said. "Soon, Aunt Mai's belly will be
as big as mine."

"Oh ..." was Annie's puzzled response.

Rachel looked up at Mai.

"When will the baby be here?" she asked.

"Not for awhile.  We got some time, ok?" When the young child just nodded Mai let out a sigh of relief.

=Trent and Sarah Rodgers' House=
=Near San Jose, California, Earth=

Rick sat on the dock behind his brother's home, looking at the bay
spanned out in front of him. He had a fishing pole in his hand, but
was not actively fishing. The calmness of the water allowed him a
moment to think about how quickly everything had happened over
the past few weeks.

He had been cleared medically and by Starfleet to return to duty,
but Dr. Montalban still wanted him to remain on Earth for the next
few days to conduct further tests. It was more of a request than an
order, but with everything he had gone through, what was a few
more days.

Still, he wanted to get back to work. Besides his family, his career
was the most important aspect of his life. He also felt that he had
something to prove to himself that he could still perform at the
same level he had performed prior to that day on UNITY.

"Daddy!" Rachel yelled out as she ran down to the dock and hopped
into Rick's lap.

"Hey, Ray," Rick smiled.

"When are we going back to the starbase?" she asked.

"I not know. You want to go?"

Rick was careful when he spoke to her so that he didn't sound like the
idiot he felt at times.

"Maybe. I like playing with Annie, but I miss Martin," she said.

Rick nodded, "Soon, OK?"

"OK," she replied.

Rick noticed Mai walking toward them.

"Hey you two," She gave Rick a kiss on the cheek and the she held
Rachel by her side a moment.

"Daddy says we can go home soon," Rachel smiled, looking up at Mai.

"He did, did he?" Mai gave her husband a questioning look as if he had
something up his sleeve.

Rachel ran back to the house to play with her cousin.

"Are you OK?" Rick asked, motioning for Mai to sit next to him.

"Yes... Why? I feel ... fine," she managed to say without feeling like she
was lying.

"You not look so well this morning," Rick said. "I thought you were sick."

"I wasn't, but I'm feeling a little bit better now," Mai replied.

"That good," Rick said. "I glad you better. Now, what you keeping from
me?"

"What ever do you mean?," Mai began to fiddle with her fingers and look
down at her feet.

"Sweetheart, I know you. I know when you keep some ... something from
me," Rick said. "Are you really OK. If something bad, you can tell me."

"Nothing bad It's just-," Mai looked into Rick's eyes and just knew he
would have to know sooner or later.. obviously. "I'm pregnant," now all
that awaited was a response of some kind from her husband. Hopefully a
good reaction.

Rick stared at her for a long moment. He had expected her to give him bad
news ... to tell him that something was wrong with her. He tried to prepare
himself for the worse.

But this ...

"You mean that you ..."

"Yes. We will be having a new baby," Mai looked away she braced herself for
the worse that Rick could say.

A smile crept across his face.

"This is wonderful. This ... I ...," he held Mai in his arms.

Numerous emotions filled him at that moment.

"What you not tell me sooner?" he asked.

"I wanted to see how well your recovery was coming along," which was true.
Mai didn't want to give him this news if he wasn't doing so well like he is now.

"This is best news ...," he hugged her again.

Rick's sister-in-law Sarah walked down to the dock and caught part of the
conversation. She too was pregnant - seven months to be exact.

"So, you finally told him?" Sarah smiled.

MaiKai could only nod as she was stuck like glue to her husband.

"Well Ricky, as I told Mai, I'm happy for the both of you," she said, reaching
down to hug Rick. "Now, I'll let you two be alone. I just came down to tell
you that lunch was ready. But take your time."

As Sarah walked away, Rick looked at Mai.

"So, who else knew?" he asked, puzzled.

"My nurse, my psychologist, and Sarah are the only ones to know before you,"
Mai replied.

"That OK. I just happy. I am happy for you. I happy for us," he held her, feeling
that everything was starting to work out for them.

"You know I haven't told Rachel yet," Mai gave Rick a smile.  She figured Rick
would like to tell someone and he could start with their daughter.

Rick stood and reached for Mai's hand.

"We tell her together," Rick said.

MaiKai took Rick's hand and held it tight in hers.  All she could do was to smile in realization that even when Mai thought she was at her worse, good things can happen still.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240901.07 Joint Log Cmdr. Summers & Cmdr. Wellington

=/\= Sickbay - private room 2 =/\=

She lay on a bed sleeping but not well.  She jerked awake
and pulled herself into a semi sitting position.

"Athena..." Rangi approached the bed where the counselor sat
looking shocked and confused.  "How are you feeling?" she
asked.

"I feel fine," she started without thinking, "Shouldn't I be
getting back to.... to...."  She sighed as the thought that
had been right there disappeared and now was inaccessible.

"To your office." Rangi suggested with a smile. She picked
up the medpadd and read through the recent history, noting
the medication and the improvements noticed over the last
few hours. " Do you remember where your office is?" Rangi
asked.

"Its just.."  She started and lamely finished, "Around the
corner?"

" Not quite...but its close to here." Rangi replied. " Do
you know what this place is?" she asked.

"Sickbay," popped out without thought and with a hint of
disgust that she wouldn't know such a simple detail.

"That's right." Rangi replied "...and can you tell me what
you do in your office?"

"I ask annoying questions," she stated matter-of-factly.

Rangi laughed. " Well yes you do...sometimes." she said and
pulled forward a chair. " Do you remember who gave that to
you?" she asked, pointing at the glittering ring on Athena's
finger. " It's beautiful isn't it?"

She looked at the ring {Do I know my name is Athena or am I
just getting used to everyone saying it.}  She nudge the
ring with her finger making it sparkle and glint a little
more as she thought about the questions asked.  She still
felt warmth and security  .... and love when she looked at
the ring... on a small sigh she answered, "Yes.......... Its
beautiful."  She watched the ring a moment or two longer and
tried, "Its from...."  {Damn! I was hoping the name would
just pop out there.}  She felt the urge to cry but didn't
give into it not wanting to analyze the reason.

Rangi tilted her head hoping that Athena would say the name.
" From...? " she waited. " It's from.." Athena met her gaze
and Rangi looked expectantly at her.

"Vvvvv.....," she hung her head and covered up the ring,
"I'm Sorry."

"Don't worry about it." Rangi said in a gentle tone. She
gave Athena a few moments then, seeming to make a change of
subject said : " I'm glad of a few moments to sit down. I
haven't been well and getting back to duty is tougher than I
thought."

"I feel a bit asea myself," Athena responded.  Are you
feeling overwhelmed by your duties after being ill?"

Rangi considered it. " Not overwhelmed exactly...tired
certainly..but its taken my mind off a personal problem.
There are people depending on me and decisions to make." She
saw Athena listening to her words and without a break
continued " Do you remember what Viktor does?"

"He's an Erassian General," Athena's brow furrowed at the
weird placement of the question.  "Why do you ask," she
continued wondering why Rangi had asked.

Rangi smiled and got to her feet. " Because I wanted to see
if you remembered him." she replied. " You do...you
see, you didn't ask me 'Viktor who?'...I'll come back and
see you tomorrow ok?"

"Couldn't I be lying around my quarters instead of here,"
she asked.  "I mean I'm not likely to hurt anyone or myself,
am I?"

"I'd prefer that you stay here for another night." Rangi
replied." By this time tomorrow I think you will find that
you'll have a lot more recall. You wont be so confused. It's
better if you remain here for a few more hours."

Athena sighed heavily show her disgust but didn't argue.
She nodded ignoring the small pang it still gave her to do
so.  She even sort of snuggled down into the bed as if she
were ready for a nap.  {Hopefully I won't have been bored to
death by then.}

Rangi walked to the door then turned and looked back. She
was well aware that Athena didn't want to stay confined to
her room so tried to give her something to dwell on. " That
really is a lovely ring Athena." she said.

"It has something to do with my immune system, my antibodies attack
the nano machines and render them useless, I know it's not in my
medical history and I'd rather it stay that way if you don't mind"
Gustav further explained and asked, adding "If you need proof just
take a sample of my blood and test it by adding nano machines".

Rice frowned before turning his head to look at Rangi who met his gaze
with a similar expression. "I don't understand." she said looking at
Gustav. "You've had blood tests before and they show nothing out of
the ordinary. How do you know this?"

"I've never had any nano tech in my system since joining Starfleet so
you wouldn't see anything out of the ordinary, and to answer your
second question I was told of it and had seen the results while was a
child and a teenager and I'd rather you leave it at that… ma'am"
Gustav asked more sternly than he normally would to a superior
officer.

Rice spoke with a stern tone. " Lieutenant... remember to whom you're speaking!"

Gustav glared at Dr Rice, he didn't intend any disrespect all Kroitzer
wanted to do is convey how much he didn't want to talk about his past
and Ganymede Genetics, the last thing they told him before he left for
starfleet was not to mention them to anyone.

"It's alright Doctor rice. " Rangi said quietly "...The Lieutenant and
I will discuss this later. " She looked at their patient whose right
shoulder was swathed in white dressings.

" If what you say is true, " she said " ...then that throws up a
serious problem. We wouldn't be able to give you the type of
prosthesis we'd like. In fact…" she looked observed him thoughtfully
"...it would by necessity have to be one of a much more basic form."

"That would be fine, all I'm needing is a new arm that will let me do
my job as well as before" Gustav said

"Ha" Rice had smiled to himself at the simplistic statement but seeing
rangis quick glance added " sorry."

"I don't think you appreciate how difficult that is." She said having
turned her attention back to Gustav. "You do intricate work...using a
basic'arm' will probably not
achieve what you want."

Rice took in a deep breath. " Lieutenant.." he said, with great
patience in his tone." We can fit a prosthetic arm to the best of our
ability within limits. Nano technology has moved the whole field
forward and without it we lose close on... ohhh… fifty percent of what
is possible. You must understand that."

Gustav thought to himself for a bit the said " well I guess what's
done is done and you can only do what you can…" adding "is there any
chance that I will be able to get the full technical diagrams for the
arm after the op?"

" I don't see why not." Rangi said and glanced at Rice.

" Certainly." he replied.

" Good." Rangi said and suggested that they set the time for the
surgery as the next morning. Rice agreed. "Then if you will excuse us
doctor, I'd like to talk to the
lieutenant privately. I will take the history."

"Oh...very well then. Thank you Commander...Lieutenant, I'll see you
first thing in the morning then." He nodded to each of them before
turning towards the door and leaving them alone.

"Right." Rangi said seeing Gustav's slightly suspicious expression. "
Lets talk nano tech... your system... and why you want to keep it to
yourself."

Rangi took a seat and listened to Gustav's explanation as to why his
body rejects nano tech and why he wants it kept a secret.

Gustav had just woken up with the sight of a tall red haired figure
standing over him taking notes on his condition and Kroitzer guessed
waiting for him to awake.

It had been a couple of days since the accident, the doctor on duty at
the time had informed Gustav about what had happened when he was lucid
enough to comprehend the situation at first he found it hard to take
as his hands were his livelihood but then he was told that he would be
able to be fitted with a cybernetic prosthesis that would as well if
not better than his original arm after some rehabilitation, now the
surgeon was here to find out all he needed to know before the
operation.

"Ah Lieutenant. You're awake. How are you feeling?" the doctor asked
but before Gustav could answer anything, he and the doctor glanced
towards the door as it slid open. "Commander." the doctor said turning
to face the newcomer.

" Doctor Rice...good morning." Rangi replied then looking at Gustav
greeted him in a similar way but echoed Rice's question " How are you
today?"

"Hanging in there… but with only one arm hanging isn't that easy"
Gustav said trying to keep a sense of humour going.

"Quite" Rangi murmured in response and gave him a stock
'you're-doing-very-well-and-its-all-going-to-be-fine' expression. "
May I?" she asked holding out her hand for the medpadd. Rice handed it
to her and she began to read the notes. " You have one of out most
skilled surgeons here." she said to Gustav and raised her head to look
at him as she added " Doctor Alexander Rice...thank you." she hand the
medpadd back.

Looking back at Dr Rice Gustav said "I'd shake your hand but…" which
made the Dr smile and let out a slight titter before becoming more
serious again.

"Now that you're stable..." he began "...we should think of surgery. "
He cleared his throat as though about to begin a lecture. "Recently a
new and exciting development has been explored with some promising
results. I hope you will agree to taking part in this breakthrough."
He smiled confidently at Gustav.

"I'm interested… what's this exciting development about?" he asked.

" Hhhmmm… well... to keep things simple... standard nano technology
has provided good results but we have discovered a new technique that
I believe will benefit you.
The process involves..."

Gustav cut the Dr off before he could continue any further "I'm sorry
doctor but it turns out that I won't be able to participate in your
new treatment".

"Not participate!?" Rice exclaimed "Why not?"

Rangi raised a hand when Rice flashed a glance at her then looking at
Gustav said: "Lieutenant...although the treatment is new, it's
perfectly safe. Please don't think that we would use you as a 'test'
case." He looked form one to the other.

"Well my body rejects any know form of nano tech" Gustav explained to
Dr Rice and to Rangi.

"Does it?" Rice asked peering at Gustav suspiciously.

"It does?" Rangi asked barely hiding her amazement. "Why?"

Mnemosyme sat at her desk thinking over the session she had with Dr. Rodgers.  It seemed that the doctor was complaining of having nightmares again.  In discussing and checking the record and then looking into any new medical conditions. Nym had a lot to think about.  She wanted to give some thought to the course of action she would recommend to MaiKai.  After all it wouldn't be good if the new pediatric doctor had a mental break while with a patient.

{Pregnancy..... tragedy with hubby..... daughter.... responsibilities... experimental medication... it worked .... at least for a while but all this new stuff.}  Her thoughts ran through her head and she began to put the piece together as the hot tea on her desk became stone cold.

MEMO:
TO: Dr. Rodgers
From: 2nLt. Nyx

Doctor, I believe the medication that had previously been working at its lowest level may need to be upped a little bit.  I hesitate to do this as you are pregnant.  All your new stressors to your life is what I think is the trigger for your nightmares.  I'm sure you are still feeling the majority of the responsibility for your family and with the increased hormones in pregnancy is all just a little too much at this time.  I'm going to suggest seeing a counselor a little more often just for you to blow off steam as it were and I would look into some spa treatments such as a massage to help keep your stress levels down.  I'm also hoping that with the improvements of your husband's condition that you will begin to feel as though the family responsibility is more shared.  I can not in good conscience recommend upping the dosage of your medication at this time because of its unknown effects to the fetus, although it does show no ill effects in the minimal dosage you are currently taking.

Nym updated the doctor's file and made her report.  {I just can't imagine how the doctor kept slipping through the cracks and not getting her evaluation done until now.}  She took a sip of her tea and only because she didn't want to clean up the mess of spitting out the now cold drink did she swallow it.  She took the cup to the replicator and placed it in the appropriate spot and hit the recycle button.  She took two minutes to tiddy the already spotless room and perfectly ordered desk before leaving.

" Did you double check for weapons this time? Because if I get hurt, someone in this office will become the new target for that sniper rifle we got in." Adams was still mad about the meeting with Rojac.{ if jardan had not been so anal about training us "Newbies" I've held my rank for several years....} He did not finish the thought, just waited for the cell to open." Aye, sir none were found," replied the guard.

Adams stepped into the cell and studied the prisoner. The prisoner had seemed different from the others and preffered to be by himself. Also, he had been observed to be meditating several times a day. Most unusual for a Romulan. " I understand you wished to talk? Or would you rather just stab me and die yourself? Your friend thought it was a great idea. " The prisoner seemed to gather himself and spoke," What he did was..unfortunate. However, it accomplished his task. His job was to sow confusion and uncertainy, to make you distrust yourselves. To get you to jump at shadows." " And your job was to.... " The Romulan frowned and said," Good question. Simply put, it was to kill your Captain. However, I did not wish for this to happen." Adams smirked," Yeah. you got a conciense, right? Decided that violence was not the way to go?"

The prisoner nodded and said, " Precisely correct. You see, I belong to a certain group on Romulus. We study the ways of Surak. We had a good teacher....Spock of the Unification movement. And more recently as your president." Adams stood there, for once at a loss for words.

[USS Chimera] 240901.07 Duty Log, Cdr. Rick Rodgers

=Starfleet Command=
=San Francisco, Earth=

Following Rick's release from Dehner Institute, he and Mai were
invited to stay at Trent and Sarah's home in San Jose. Rick, though,
wanted to be alone with Mai and Rachel so they got their own place
overlooking the San Francisco Bay with a grand view of the Golden
Gate Bridge.

Now, Rick was sitting in front of a board of Starfleet brass, trying to
decide if he was capable of returning to work. He was wearing his
uniform for the first time since that day on UNITY.

"Commander Rodgers, as you know, you have been cleared by Doctor
Montalban medically to return to duty. It is up to this board to decide
if you're fit mentally in accordance to Starfleet regulations," the head
of the panel, a rear admiral stated. "During the past few days, you
have been given a number of tests to determine your mental capacity."

The five person panel (a rear admiral, a commodore, two captains and
a commander sat on one end of the room, while Rick sat alone on the
other. He was grateful for the table in front of him as his hands
shuttered under the table, out of eyesight of the panel.

"The results of those tests, given by Admiral LaForge's staff, show that
your knowledge of engineering is in the top percentile of all officers in
Starfleet. Your understanding of basic Starfleet skills are of that of an
officer of your experience," the admiral explained.

Rick allowed a soft sigh, even though his hands still trembled.

"Even so, your verbal exam was not on par to Starfleet standards,"
the admiral continued. "Dr. Montalban explained that this would be
the case, so we lowered the emphasis on the oral exam and allowed
it to be retaken as part of the written exam, which you excelled. So,
it if the decision of this panel to allow you to return to active duty
effective this date."

"Thank you, sir," Rick said.

"While you are able to return to duty, it is also the decision of this
panel that you are, at this time, unable to hold the position of a
department head or higher," the admiral said.

"May ... may I ask why?" Rick carefully asked.

"To run a department, you have to have the ability to give clear
and concise orders. Your verbal tests show that you are unable to do
this," the admiral said. "While you may know what needs to be done
in any situation, being able to explain that to those under your
command, without question, is critical to running a department."

Rick closed his eyes and nodded. As long as he was able to return
to duty, he didn't care if he was in charge of anything or not.

"You will be able to retain the rank of commander which you have
earned through your years of service to Starfleet and the
Federation," the admiral said. "Do you have any questions,
Commander Rodgers?"

Rick shook his head, "No, sir."

"Then I declare this board of inquiry adjourned," the admiral said.
"Welcome back, commander."

"Thank you, sir," Rick said as the board members stood and walked
out of the room. Rick remained seated.

He allowed a smile to cross his face.

=Wilmington, Delaware, Earth=

Dr. Roak Montalban escorted MaiKai down one corridor and then another. They came out in a large recreation area where a number of patients were engaged in various activities from games to painting to reading. Most of the patients were veterans of the war that had recently been admitted for trauma suffered during the fighting.

Off in the corner sitting by himself, Rick looked out a large window looking at the snow falling outside that had already covered the landscape.

MaiKai took a deep breath upon seeing her husband.  She didn't want to get her hopes up and assume how much memory he retained, so she tried to control her breathing to in hopes calm her heart from pounding.

Rick looked up and saw Mai and quickly stood, rushing to her and meeting her in the middle of the room.

Mai smiled as she could tell that Rick was very excited to see her after all she was as well.

"I'll leave you two to talk," Montalban said as he turned and walked away.

Rick watched, then held Mai's arm.

"Lets go," Rick said, wanting Mai to follow him. "Want to be alone."

"Oh, ok. Lets," she followed Rick.  It really didn't bother her that he was talking like a child.  Just hearing his voice again was enough for her.

Moments later, they entered a room.

"My room," Rick said as he then grabbed Mai and hugged her. "I missed you."

"I missed you too, Rick," her eyes were starting to well up, but she refused to let tears fall.  She didn't want him to get confused and feel as though she was upset.  It was just Mai wasn't sure she would've been able to hold her husband ever again.  She held him closer and buried her head in his chest, "I missed you so much".

Rick held his wife for the next couple of minutes, not saying a word. When he gently pulled away, he looked into Mai's eyes. His own eyes watered.

"I so glad to see you again. I re ... re ..." he closed his eyes to calm himself. "I remember last time you here. I not able to talk to you. I can now, but not like I use to."

"I remember too. I held your hand just like this," Mai held up her hand which had one of his in it, "I know, but the important thing is you're getting better and communicate now," she smiled trying to reassure her husband.

"How Rach ... Rachel?" he asked.

"Doing well. She's going to start school soon," Mai paused for a moment, "She asks about you all the time and you're in all of her drawings. She misses you too".

"I miss her, too," Rick said. "But I worried. I not want her to see me like this. But I want to see her."

"I know, Mai reached up and rubbed the back of her husband's head, "You tell me when you want to see her and I'll bring her to you. It'll be all right." Mai smiled brightly trying not to cry.

"I know it be OK," Rick said before giving Mai a puzzled look.

Mai nodded and looked down at their clasps hands.

"There some ... something different about you," Rick said.

"What do you mean by that Rick?" she was hoping she wasn't confusing or frustrating him by asking him a question so broad like that.

Rick stared at his wife for another long moment.

"I not know. You just different," Rick said, sounding confused. "Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it ... it's nothing."

Now Mai was confused.  She couldn't think of anything really that was different about her or gave any indication.  She was just feeling so many emotions at once maybe she was overlooking something.

Rick kissed Mai and held her in his arms. Even though he was told it was unlikely, Rick was concerned that he would revert again to how he was the previous week. He was concerned that he would again lose his memories.

He tried to put those thoughts out of his head.

"You know I love you," Rick said.

"Yes of course. I love you too," MaiKai responded.

"I can never say it enough," Rick said.

Just then, a nurse entered.

"Sorry to bother you, but I was told to ask you if you're ready to see your mother and sister-in-law now?" the nurse asked.

"Just a few minutes more," Rick said, still holding Mai.

The nurse nodded and left Mai and Rick alone again.

Mai and Rick sat on the bed as he kissed her again, this time more passionately.

"I want to be alone with you," Rick said a minute later.

"We are, Rick. It's just me and you here in -," but she was cut short.

"No, really alone," Rick said, shaking his head. "Not here. Somewhere else. No doctors or nurses to bother us."

"Where would you like to go?" MaiKai wondered.

Rick looked down at the deck for a moment, then at Mai.

"Away from here," he said.

"I'll see what I can do, but I can't make any promises". The one thing that Mai didn't want to have to do was not being able to make and keep promises.  She held him close to her and kissed him passionately before they would invite Rick's mother and sister-in-law in.

podium.

"No thank you, but I need you to check with the operations
team that I sent to go help the Engineers to get the
transporters working and get an update from them." Jade said
as they both headed back to her office. Jenny nodded and
went to her desk to check in with the operations team.

Jade then went to sit down at her desk to get everything she
needed for the meeting she was having with the two assistant
operations officers she wanted them to work on the project
that Jade was working on to deal with communication jammers
while on the old Chimera.

Both, LtJg. Dexter and Ensign Baco arrived at Jade's office
at the same time. Dexter was overranking Baco by a grade,
but Baco was the more eager officer, so it was him who
pressed the chime.

"Enter." Jade said not looking up she was finishing reading
LtJg Dexter's jacket and saw that he used to be in tactical
which will help her greatly.

Both officers entered the room and stood to attention. It
was again Baco who said: "Ensign Baco and Lieutenant Dexter
reporting as requested, ma'am"

It was a bit awkward situation. Dexter was one of the most
senior LtJg. on board. He should be a full Lieutenant for a
year, but for this reason or another he was still LtJg. Jade
was First Lieutenant, what was the marine equal to LtJg.
Nonetheless, she was the department head and boss of both
incoming officers.

Jade looked up when the eager Ens spoke for the both of
them, "take a seat." Jade said looking straight into the
Ensign's eyes. Once they were both seated Jade pulled out
her PADD with all the information she wanted them to have
for the idea she had.

"Alright I have a special project that I would like you two
to help me with." She said handing them both PADDs with the
same information on it.

Dexter might have been shy, but he was far from incompetent
and all the years in duty were paying off, as he learned
very fast what Jade's point was. "Ma'am" he said,
"if I understand this right, you want to create a way how
to deal with a possible comm. Jamming field. There are of
course several possible ways to follow, but I must say that
breaking a jamming field is quite a hard task"

"Yes that's correct." Jade said turning her monitor, so that
both
Dexter and Baco could see it, "this was an idea that a
Specialist came
up with on the Chimera-B it's called a cycling program the
idea is
simple it will cycle through the frequencies making sure
that we stay
one step ahead of the jamming frequency." Jade said.

It was Baco who said: "So we need to strengthen our own
communication devices or completely destroy a possible
jamming field".

Dexter looked at the Ensign with a piercing sight. Stating
the obvious was a clever way not to remain silent, but still
not saying anything of value. He shrugged and said:
"Ma'am, I'd suggest using a modified comm relay probe.
The point is to use the probe as a distant comm. transmitter
to be able to communicate while in the jamming field. The
point is to find the right frequency for communication
between the Chimera and the probe."

"Yes and no." Jade said, "the problem with the probe is that
it's a
sitting duck when we send it out there and that's where a EM
field
might work." Jade said having worked with EM fields on the
ground
before and seeing how effective they're she wants to get
them used in
space.

"The EM field can be used to disrupt a torpedos guidance
system or
even the detonation system." Jade added. "As for the jamming
field my
first thought was to use a big EM field to disrupt the
jamming field,
but the EM field would cause issues with other ships in the
area and
cause more problems then it would fix." Jade told the two
ops officers
knowing that the EM field is the easy answer, but it had to
me side
effects to it.

"Hmm" Dexter said, "it must be a frequency that wont
be jammed by the jamming field … so it must be somewhat
… exotic. Sure not in the standard EM band."

"True. That's the other option we've we try and find a new
frequency
that has never been used before or like what Ens Baco said
finding a
way to strengthen our frequency so that the jamming field
doesn't
effect the comm frequency." Jade said smiling now seeing how
much work
they will have with this project.

Dexter nodded: "I would vote for the new frequency. Using
sole strength is a fine thing, but unless the enemy has more
strength to fight us back. Using a frequency that the enemy
does not know could give us a major tactical advantage and
is not much depending on how much power could be reserved
for us …"

"Yes. I'll let you have free reign on how you want to go about getting
this started, but I would like daily progress reports and also if you
need anyone else on the team please come and see me first." Jade said
smiling happy that she was able to get two officers who know what
they're doing with this project. "You two are dismissed." Jade added
and as they both stood up and headed out of the office Jade went back
to work dealing mainly daily reports from the night shift.

Mai was laying in her bed snuggled up to her pillow when she felt a tug by her foot.  She slowly turned around and sat up in bed.  When she had rubbed her eyes until she could visibly see out of them she was peering at her daughter at the end of the bed.

"Come tell Mommy all about it," she made a huge gestures with her arms for Rachel to climb on to the bed and cuddle up to her.

Rachel put her head on her mothers stomach and melded next to her side.  MaiKai began top run her fingers through her daughters hair as she held her close to her with her other arm.  "Now, what happened?"

"Nothing I came in to check on you.."

MaiKai chuckled, "Ray baby, What are you talking about. I was sleeping".

Rachel shook her head, 'No, you were kicking and screaming for daddy to come and save you.." Rachel said and then her nose sniffled.

"What did I want daddy to save me from?" Mai questioned.  She knew she was due for another psych evaluation and maybe she could bring the part where her nightmares seem to be coming back in her session.

"I don't know... Mommy can I try something?" the little child asked with her big shining eyes.

"Sure, what?" Mai stopped running her fingers through her hair so the child could sit up better and say what she needed to.

"Well, when I have a nightmare, you sit up with me all night and hold me until I fall asleep with teddy.  Well, I brought teddy for you to hold while I hold you,"Rachel explained.

MaiKai smiled at her daughter's logic.  How could she say tell her no. "Mommy would like that very much," she kissed Ray on her forehead.  The child giggled in delight and then hopped off the bed to grab her teddy and then curled back in bed with her mother.

Rachel just had a last couple of words before she would fall asleep holding her mom, "You and daddy have been there to hold me when I'm done so much. It's my turn, mommy. my turn," the child yawned and laid her head back while Mai let a tear fall on to teddy's head before trying to muffle her sobs.

MaiKai and Rachel got dressed for the day.  MaiKai didn't have Rachel settled into school all the way as of yet so she decided to take her to work.  She had a very important job for her.  She was going to have her daughter help talk to her patients and hold their hand to make it easier for Mai to do her examinations since she was the Pediatrics doctor now after all.

Mai was ready to be on her way to Sickbay when her stomach started to feel really upset so much that she had been standing, but once her stomach turned, she was planted on the floor from the pain.  She was feeling like she wanted to throw up.

Rachel came in to get Mai after she had finished her breakfast, "Mommy!" she rushed over, "What are you doing on the floor?"

MaiKai made efforts to try and stand without help, "Honey, I'm just not feeling well.  We're gonna have to hurry up and get there so I can have my new nurse do a bio scan on me to figure out what's wrong before my first patient arrives."  MaiKai held on to her stomach as she was standing up straight.

"Well, then come on mommy let's go!" Rachel took Mai's had and started t o make way for the door.

Rachel was playing with her teddy bear in the next room while Mai was laying on a biobed.

"What?! That can't be right. Check it again," Mai had heard the results from her tricorder scan and test results.

"Ma'am there is no mistake and you already had me check it twice," Nurse Leela Niece replied to her.

"How did this happen? Why Me? Why now?" Mai was becoming frantic.

"Well, it happens when a man and a woman -" the petite nurse couldn't finish her explanation because Mai had already reached out and smacked the words out of her mouth.

The nurse grabbed her jaw, "I apologize, ma'am.  I guess that was un-called for..."

"You're damn straight it was," Mai folded her arms across her chest.

"The test results don't lie.  You are pregnant. Pregnant. You should be happy... Shouldn't you?" Leela questioned.

The word 'pregnant' just rung in Mai's ears.

Leela touched her should to bring her back to reality, "Let's start over.  How about later tonight we have a girls night out and we can get to know one another.  Just go grab some dinner or something.  It'd be a nice escape. You could get a bay sitter for a bit.  Us women have to stick together. I'm sure there is another one of us who wouldn't mind watching her," she suggested.

Mai nodded, "Just maybe... Let me think on it".

Leela smiled and exited room still rubbing her jaw a bit and left Mai to her thoughts.

[USS Chimera] 240901.06, Joint Log, LtCdr MaiKai Rodgers and Dr. Roak Montalban

=The Elizabeth Dehner Institute of Psychiatric Studies=
=Wilmington, Delaware, Earth=

Days earlier, Rick was transferred to Starfleet Medical in San Francisco so Dr. Jovak
could conduct the mind meld. Jovak had been successful in locating Rick's memories,
allowing for a series of treatments.

He was sent back to Wilmington for these treatments, which were performed by Dr.
Roak Montalban.

During these few days of treatments, no one outside of the medical staff were updated
on Rick's condition. Montalban had decided to wait until he knew for certain of Rick's
condition before he told the family.

After the final scheduled treatment, he had gathered Mai, Sarah and Elaine in one of the
institute's conference rooms. Trent had been sent out on the Lancelot days earlier to test
the ship's new weapons systems and was unable to attend.

"I want to thank you for your patience during these past few days," Montalban took a seat
at the large conference table. "I know how difficult it has been not to receive any updates
on the treatments, but we wanted to make certain of his condition before we released any
news."

"Everyone in this room is in the medical profession, Dr. Montalban," Elaine said. "I don't see
why we were left out in the cold."

"I am truly sorry, Dr. Beckett, but it was my call and I felt it justified,"  Montalban explained.

Mai wasn't keen on agreeing with Ricks mother, but she happened to agree with her,
"Difficult not receive any updates, sir?  You obviously have no idea".  Dr. Montalban made a
face as if he would like to counter what Mai had just said, but then MaiKai gave him what
appeared to be a death glare and challenged him to say something.

"The good news is Rick's progress has been impressive. He has retained his knowledge
and memories and is communicating with us," Montalban said before looking at Mai. "In fact,
he's been insistent on talking to you. After we're finished here, I'll let you go back and see
him."

MaiKai could've tear up and started the waterfalls again, but didn't.  She just exchanged
glances with Sarah.

"It took some time at first, but he's now able to walk on his own," Montalban said. "We even
had him running and performing various exercises yesterday in one of our holosuites. So,
physically, he's OK."

"His language skills are not what we had hoped," Montalban continued. "He has difficulty
with sentence structure and is easily aggravated. This makes speaking even more difficult.
He knows what he wants to say, but at times he struggles to get his point across. It helps
for him to speak slowly. He may sound like a child, but he's intelligent. This morning, he
repaired a couple of tricorders that had been given us problems. He's also reading
technical manuals that I can't even begin to understand as well as classic works of
literature."

Hearing this Mai could only nod and make check marks of his progress off the list in her head.

"There are also going to be rare moments where he may blackout or forget certain things,"
Montalban said. "These will be short term memory losses, lasting no longer than a couple of
minutes. We believe that, in time, as his mind adjusts, he will no longer have these memory
losses."

"You will also notice that his hands will shake uncontrollably at times when he's nervous, but
other than that, we're pleased with the results,"  Montalban concluded.

"How long do you expect to keep him here?" Sarah asked.

"He can go home tomorrow, but I'll need to see him a couple more times in the next week
before I can clear him to return to duty," Montalban replied.

"Return to duty?" Elaine asked.

"He wants to return to work as soon as possible," Montalban said.

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Elaine asked.

"I don't see why not," Montalban said. "As long as he receives regular evaluations and medical
exams, he should be able to function normally."

Montalban stood and looked at Mai, "Now, Doctor Rodgers, if you'll follow me, I'll take you to see
your husband."

"Thank you Doctor," she stood and started to follow Dr. Montalban.

"Sarah and Doctor Beckett, you will be able to see him in a few minutes," Montalban stated.

They both nodded.

Rangi sighed, leaned back in the chair and pressed a hand to
her forehead and kept it there.
Scott tapped on the door and hearing a reply telling him to
'come in', stepped inside in time to see Rangi raise her
head.

"Hey...whats the matter?" He hesitated as the thought that
she had heard bad news came to his mind. " Theres nothing
wrong is there?" he asked with concern.
She looked at him as he hurried towards her and knelt down
beside her chair making him slightly lower than she was.

"No..there's nothing wrong." she said meeting his eyes. "
Shanes well and it was so good to talk to him..but..."
Try as she might she couldnt prevent tears filling her eyes.

" Tell me." Scott said softly.

She shook her head as though confused.
" I dont know where Martin is." she said " Shane cant tell
me ofcourse but he could be anywhere."

Scott laid a hand on her arm. " Its alright...really it is."
She didnt look at all convinced.
"Look.." he said "... Shane knows loads of people and lots
of places. He wouldnt do anything to put Martin in danger.
He would have thought this through..known who to ask and
what place to choose. He'll make sure that Martin is in the
safest possible place. You know that dont you?" he asked and
when she gave a slight nod added:
" That's why he sent you here. Noone can get to you..and
noone can get to Martin either....it's the safest bet I'd
ever make." He spoke earnestly.
"Rangi...dont worry about this. I know its hard for you but
honestly, Shane would never do anything to jeopardise either
of you.You believe that dont you?"

She nodded again and dashed away a tear that spilled over to
trickle down her cheek.
" Yes...you're right..Im just being silly." she said and
made a brave but not very good attempt at a smile.

Scott said:
" No you're not..its just that you've been very ill and its
all a bit too much to cope with at the moment...but in a day
or so you'll see that all this is for the best and that
Shanes done the right thing....ok?"
He smiled up at her then got to his feet once he saw her
accept his words.
"Lets get you back to your room then". he said stepping
behind the chair. " Time for another dose of the
Nutrienalase, then a long sleep and you'll feel much
better."

" I hate that stuff." she said as the hover chair moved
towards the door ".... it tastes like mud."

" You've eaten mud have you?" Scott enquired and she laughed
" No...but I can imagine what it might be like. she replied.

They left the CMOs office and started back along the
corridor but had only gone a short distance when Scotts
commbadge chirped.
+Fisher here+ he said and at the same moment Lucy rounded
the corner in front of them,

" Scott!.,...come 'quickly!" she said stressing the word "
Gustav Kroitzers had a terrible accident!"

He was exiting the airlock and felt a bit awkward now being
in the wide promenade that stretched around the docking
ring. He got used to the confined spaces of the Qashqai.
Nonetheless, there was no time to waste, he tapped his comm.
badge.

+TAPS+"Terek to Guzman. Commodore, do you have a few
minutes? I've got some interesting news."

+TAPS+ Glad to hear you Terek. I'll be in my office in 15
minutes and will meet you there. Welcome back! +

====== Shane's office, 15 minutes later
======

Shane was already sitting behind his large wooden desk, when
his aide, Lieutenant Pakosii announced the coming of the
Chief Science officer. Shane signaled back that Terek should
come in and within a few seconds he entered the room.

"Welcome Terek" Shane said, standing up and offering his
hand for a shake. "Please take a seat and tell me what I
can get for you ..."

Bajoran shook Shane's hand "Good morning"

"A tarkelian tea would be nice, thank you." asked Terek and
sat down in the comfortable chair.

Coming back from the replicator, Shane placed the requested
drink in front on Terek and walked over to his own seat with
a cup of mild green tea in his hand. Seating himself he said
while smiling a bit: "So, what's your report
Commander."

"Where to begin. I'd say it was a successful mission. We've
discovered two potentialy minable moons. Sigma and Kappa
orbiting Aeran V. One with deposits of meitnerium and
potassium triglyceride and the other one has proven to have
few areas with dilithium veins."

"Sounds very good" Shane replied, "since you went for
the mission, the demand for resources tripled. We have
constantly three capital ships for repairs here in average
and as the war is progressing, I expect that number to rise
to five. Even now we don't have enough resources to cover
all demands and soon the shortage will reach a critical
limit. But the question now is what hardware and crew will
be needed to get those resources?"

"I'm sure that two mining parties would be more than enough
to create a regular weekly deliveries via few runabouts.
We've also discovered some stuff that might be of interest
to us. Some tritanium ore a few transonic elements. It's all
in my report." He handed Shane the data padd.

"Thank you" Shane took the report and briefly run over
the content. "Well done, Terek" Shane said again and
looked back at the CSCiO. "What about the mining
colony?"

"More exciting is that diplomatic team lead by lieutenant
commander Doran made a good deal. We've already brought ten
kilotons of Gallicite and Doran arranged for regular
supplies of it and any other surplus products in exchange
for medical care and military support in case of attack."

Nodding, Shane replied: "That's a good deal. We have
enough medical resources for now and we can get more of them
when needed. Military support is without questions approved.
The Aeran system is a part of the federation and its our
duty to protect it. But I am thinking now about how to mine
all those resources on the moons and asteroid belt. We do
not have the equipment to do it by ourselves and when I ask
Starfleet Command about a mining ship or outpost, they will
send one next year. We can't wait so long"

Terek though for a moment, rubbing his chin: "We could try
give away the mining concessions. We'll provide the scan
results and the best possible locations in exchange for a
percentage of the products. Say 50 percent of production.
The rest of it would be theirs to sell as they like."

"Hmmmm" Shane said, "the idea is not that bad. I am
not very fond about civilians being involved in our matters,
but when we really make an public offer for a concession for
mining, we could get the first resources to us very quickly.
Maybe some Ferengi trader or Bolian business man will use
the chance to make good profit …"

"Aye, but I have serious doubts that any Ferengi would agree
on 50 percent, but we can try to bargain."

"I'll think about it in more detail today and let you
know. Even with mining in civilian hands, we will need some
refinery devices here on the UNITY. Please get in touch with
Engineering and prepare me a list of what devices shall we
need and where we could install them."

Terek took another sip of his tea. The cup was almost empty
and he was getting hungry by the moment. "The needed
equipment could be a bit harder to obtain. Ore purificators
and processing machines are expensive not to mention we'll
have to set up a security storage facilities, because some
of the ores are unstable and potentialy very dangerous. BUt
I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out."

"Heh" Shane smiled, "one last question ... how did you
like a command of your own?"

{Why didn't I expect this question} a bitter smile run
across bajoran's lips and wrinkles on his nose became even
deeper. "How to say it...mmm...I know why I have chosen a
scientific carrier. It wasn't too bad, but it's too
stressful." He chuckled "I prefer my long range sensors."

Shane smiled: "Well, commading is like drinking black tea.
One does not like the taste upon the first time, but the
more one drink the more one like it ... and if one is not
careful, then it get grown to addiction."

<<OOC .. I am sorry for the delay in sending this JL >>

*** CMOs Office * USS Chimera-C ***

Scott had provided a small hover chair to take Rangi to the
CMOs office.

She was glad of it for she was still unsteady on her feet
and she knew the walk there and back would probably have
been too taxing.

She was eager to talk to Shane herself and looked forward to
it immensly as Scott propelled her along the corridor. When
they entered her office,Scott pushed the leather chair out
of the way, setting the hover one in its place. He leaned
forward to activate the desktop terminal for her, tapping in
the first requirements.

Rangi wished he would go away thinking that there was no
need for him to do it all for her but because she
appreciated his effort and his agreement in allowing the
call in the first place, she said nothing but sat patiently
until he straightened up, smiled down at her and told her
he'd be back in a while to collect her.

She thanked him and tapped in her passwords then waited for
the connection, catching sight of her reflection on the
monitor. She raised a hand to her hair which was dull and
lank and noticed how pale she was and how her eyes looked
larger in her thin face. but next moment Pakosii appeared in
front of her and she asked him if Shane was free.

The call was immediately patched through to the Commodore
himself and Shane's face appeared on screen within
seconds.

"Rangi!" Shane called, "Thanks to heaven that you're
all right now. How are you feeling?" he fired the
question.

Rangi beamed a smile at him. "I'm fine." she said "...and so
glad to see you again." but it seemed Shane had too many
questions to ask all at once.

"And what happened to you? Doctor Fisher knew very little
the last time we spoke and I feared that the Tal'shiar got
on you sooner then I could do anything about it …"

"They don't know exactly where from...but it seems I
ingested something that prevented me absorbing any
nourishment...but Im fine now." she said seeing the worry on
his face. " But how are you...and how is Martin? Are you
both alright?"

Shane sighed in relief. It was like a great weight fall of
his shoulders and he could breath free once again. "I am
glad to hear that Rangi. I suppose you will be whole all
right soon, wont you?"

She nodded, eager to reassure him. " Yes, yes I'll be fine.
I have to take a liquid supplement thing..but tell me about
you both...are you ok?"

"I am fine, thank you for asking. Martin … well, to be
honest, I don't know how he is at the moment, but three
days ago he was fine and enjoying himself."

"Where is he?" she asked.

"I had to send him away, Rangi" he replied, "he was in
danger as you were. I am not sure what did Rojac tell you
… but I've got reliable information that the Tal'shiar
is behind my family … that's mainly you and Martin."

She sat silently staring at the screen as Shane explained.

"Both of you were an easy target on the UNITY. There are
way too much foreign officers, civilians and other folks on
the Starbase to keep up security high enough to protect you
24 hours a day. I … I had to deal with the situation"

"Of course you did." Rangi said. " I just wish you'd told me
first before transferring..." Her words tailed away for that
was past and there were far
more important issues.

" But what about you?..are you 'sure' you're alright? You
would tell me wouldnt you Shane...and about Martin too?
You're not just saying everythings alright so that I wont
worry are you?"

Shane shook his head and smiled: "Don't worry about me
Rangi. If Tal Shiar could get on me, they would not make you
to a target. You know how hard it is to come past all the
stages to me and Joeleco's men wont leave me alone for a
moment."

He sighed and said: "I cant tell you where Martin is ...
not over comm., but be assured he's in good hands and
safe. I'd say that he's enjoying himself quite a lot"
He ignored the reference to him not saying anything to Rangi
prior of the transfer and hoped she wont ask again.

Rangi forced a smile. She understood he couldnt tell here
details but it ate away at her not to know.

"How long do you think I'll be here?" she asked, trying not
to sound too concerned about it."

"Well, that's a question for Captain Rojac and SSF
Command" Shane replied, trying to hide that he arranged
the transfer, "but I think you're better off on the
Chimera at least till the Tal'shiar threat is over"

"But...that could be a long time couldn't it?" she replied
with a sinking feeling.

"It's hard to make any time plans for anything now.
During this war is the UNITY more a medical center and
resupply point than anything else and both those functions
are draining a lot of resources and reserves, so finding new
ones is our first priority. Only when this is done, then I
can do more about stations security"

Rangi nodded and tried hard to look as though she understood
and was as contented as she could be with the situation.

"We could do with a little more security here." she said. "
Jardan was attacked by one of the Romulan prisoners...to be
honest..it worried me that
he could make a weapon."

Shane smiled at his beloved and replied: "I am sure Rojac
will look after Security on the Chimera. I have full trust
in his abilities to maintain his ship and the security of
his crew ... if I would not, he would not be given the
command of the SSF Flag ship ..."

He looked away for a moment and then looked at Rangi with
sadness in his eyes. "I have to end my love, please take
care of yourself and please be all right soon ...
promised?"
