Scott set the plate of sandwiches down beside Syrok.
"Cheese and...I dont know what that was." he said eyeing the
plate suspiciously. He took a seat and reached for a morsel,
chewing on it thoughtfully for a moment or two. " Tastes
like pasta!." he said under his breath. He leaned back in
his chair and stretched his acheing muscles.
He and Sryok had worked through the night and now sat in the
small med team lounge waiting for results to come through.

Syrok frowned... the human habit of eating whatever just
pleased them was a bit disgusting:
"If Commander Summers has been poisoned and if she was so
careless in her choice of food as you are, then perhaps we
already know the reason of her intoxication." he replied and
took a sip from his Vulcan tea. A lovely blank taste of
dishwater.

Scott chewed on thinking that Syroks attempt at sarcasm was
sadly lacking.
" Try one." he said pointing at the sandwiches."...you might
be surprised." He raised his own half eaten portion as
though making a toast, popped it into his mouth and grinned.

The look that Syrok gave to Scott was so cold that it could
probably manufacture a superconductive material. "No...
thank you. I believe it is time we return to the laboratory.
The results should be available by now."

Scott pushed himself to his feet, swallowing the last of his
sandwich and followed Syrok out of the lounge. The tests had
been inconclusive and some had been refined. It was in these
that the two doctors hoped to find a solution. They walked
step in step back to the research department.

**

Syrok focused his attention back to the console. There had
to be an answer. It just wasn't obvious. He reviewed the
multispectral results but it showed no sigh of any toxins or
anomalous elements in the organism.
"All right, we need to take a look to the submolecular
level."
He pressed a few buttons to enhance the resolution and
suddenly he noticed something in the villi intestinales
membrane.
"Look at this, what do you think it might suggest?" he said
to the Scott.

Scott too had his attention on the screen. " Go back a
second." he said suddenly leaning more forward."
There....and there...do you see it?"

"Indeed, the Jejunus membranes." The part of the small
intestine that is responsible for food procesing and
nutrients absorbtion looked different.
"The enzymes that usually break down the more complet
elements are not present at all and the membrane itself
seems not to be semipermeable anymore."
He tapped a few more commands and the display changed again
now showing the genetic structure of the intestine.
"Here, there have been a slight change in the genom. Very
insignifficant so the scans didn't picked it up, but really
complex and localized that they have triggered the reaction
that prevented her body from absorbing any nutrients at all.
Now we just have to find out how to reverse it."

" Too simple to be considered!" Scott said." Isnt that what
they say?..the most obvious thing is right in front of you?
Enzyme inhibiters and we overlooked that."
He slapped Syrok on his arm " We got it." he said as though
everything was solved in a moment.
It wasn't ofcourse and next moment he grew more serious.
" I have to inform the Commodore of the findings " he said."
For one thing he's worried sick about Rangi and for
another..she might not be the only one affected in this way.
We have no idea where this originated."
He turned away then stopped and looked back at the Vulcan
doctor.
" Do you recall an incidence in the Sol Draconis system?" he
asked. " A small colony died there didnt it? Am I right in
thinking they starved to death...or at least appeared to
have done so?...but wasnt there plentiful food supplies?"

"Perhaps, but as far as I know there hasn't been any
investigation on that matter. Please inform the Commodore
and then we will focus on repairing the DNA sequences. I'd
suggest a retrovirus as a carrier of the changes."

"Please begin preparations." Scott said." I'll be back in
few minutes."
He turned awayand still thinking over the half remembered
case, headed for the CMOs office. He was sure the Sol
Draconis system was relatively close to Romulan space.
{The colony had been mostly miners hadnt it} he asked
himself. It annoyed him not to have the full history come
to mind but he knew the Commodore would either be aware of
it or would find out soon enough. The main point was that
there was a link, if only a tentative one, with Romulans.

By the time Scott returned to the research dpeartment, Syrok
already had some results from Scotts request to Unity. He
had to work from the first possible supposition that Rangis
illness originated in something she had ingested and had
asked for as many details as possible.
The Vulcan doctor turned to him as Scott enetered the room.
" Any luck?" Scott asked not really expecting anything.

Without turning his head away from the display, Syrok
answered: "Despite that luck has nothing to do with that,
there is one thing about the scans that is not all right.
Look on the level of glucosis in her blood, almost none. And
the results also show that she's anaemic. This is very
strange."

Scott nodded agreement, despite the fact Syroks back was
turned. He joined his colleague at the work bench.
"You've seen the drastic drop in levels?" he asked knowing
that Syrok would have checked everything." I've spoken to
Commodore Guzman." Scott continued " He's promised us any
help we need...anything."

"Yes." he moved to make a space for Scott. "This and her
other symptoms, fatigue, elevated temperature, dizziness and
have you noticed how pale her skin looks?" He looked
directly to Scott's eyes. "My first guess would be a
malnutrition, but so far I haven't been able to find the
cause."

" I know she hasnt been eating properly for a few
days...exactly how many I'm not sure though." he added
frowning at the thought. " Up until Thursday I think toast
had been a main staple of her diet...that and water." He
pulled forward a microscope that displayed the same sample
that Syrok had been studying.

"That would hardly be a reason for malnutrition. It is not
healthy, but a few days don't result in such severe drop of
values."

" I know that." Scott replied raising his head and glancing
sideways at the Vulcan "...but we dont know exactly how long
its been since she ate properly." He saw the eyebrow raise a
fraction on Syroks face. " Ok.." he said "...thats not the
cause of malnutrition but you're correct in saying her
symptoms suggest it." He turned back to the microscope.

"The next logical step is to test the samples for any viral
or bacteriological infection that would be able to cause
those symptoms, but that has already been done and with no
results. So now I'd suggest we look for a traces of toxins.
My hypothesis is that she might be suffering from some sort
of poisoning." He turned back to the console but then paused
for one more moment. "It also might be useful to learn
about the people she's been interacting with during past
seven days."

Scott straightened up, pushing the equipment away. " Im
hoping we'll hear about that soon." he said. "The Commodore
is asking Joeleco to trace Rangis movements...the results
for a list of replicated meals should be here anytime
soon...and I asked the Commodore whether he or their son
have been unwell. They haven't."
He seemed to consider something as he watched Syrok adjust a
setting. " Syrok." he said quietly and when the Vulcan
doctor looked at him explained:
" The Captain wants this to be a top priority case and the
Commodore has referred to something that I can share with
you on a strictly 'need to know' basis. There is a strong
possibility that Romulans are involved in this."

Such non reasonal fast conclusion startled Syrok a little
bit so he raised hiis eybrows and even leaned his head a
bit.
"The Romulans. And on what facts do you base this theory?
Has commander been contacted by Romulans or in any other way
in touch with them? By some operative, subspace messages or
any other means of communication?"

"Not as far as I know." Scott answered. ...but the
Commodore told me that Intel had indicated that Romulans
would be interested in her life...or death. I take that to
mean...that they have her on a sort of Hit List."

"Very well then, if there is evidence from Stafleet
Intelligence, then we should probably investigate the
possibility of poisoning. We should focus on a thinn colon
which is responsible for nutrition absorption. Also I'd
recommend a full spectral scan of the tissue and blood
samples. It will take longer, but will provide us with more
data."

"Agreed." Scott replied simply.

After talking to the Captain, Scott stood up, crossed to the
replicator for some coffee then returned to his place and
requested a secure channel to Commodore Guzman SB Unity.
There was a delay and he settled himself more comfortably in
Rangis chair as the SSF Logo remained on the screen in front
of him.

He tapped in his details when requested and the logo
returned, this time slowly revolving in a some clever 3D
effect which, Scott imagined, some designer would have
thought entertaining in a mind numbing sort of way. Scott
drummed his fingers impatiently on the desk top and at the
next request, tapped in his personal code and authorization.

He ran a hand across his chin which, now unshaven, was dark
shadow. Eventually Pakosii appeared on the screen.

As usual, Pakosii's day was filled with dozen of calls
from across the quadrant (even from other quadrants) from
many people – Starfleet, Federation civilian government,
alien power officials, traders, soldiers of fortune and
other folks requesting to speak with the Special Forces 1st
Task Force Commander. His task as aide was to filter those
requests and patch only the really important ones.

This particular call was from the Chimera and since she was
a member of the 1st Task Force and therefore under
Commodore's immediate command, he swiftly turned his
attention to the call.

"Lieutenant Pakosii, office of Special Forces 1st Task
Force Commander" he introduced himself, "how can I help
you?" he finished.

" Scott Fisher AMO USS Chimera-C...acting CMO. I need to
speak with the Commodore 'immediately'." Scott said,
stressing the last word and hoping that Pakosii would notice
the name of the ship and the mention of acting position and
realize that the reason was urgent.

Pakosii was no field officer, no trained marine or killer or
field agent. He had only meager knowledge of engineering,
medical, tactical or other usual Starfleet areas ... he was
rather a beaurocrat. His world were formulars, requests,
schedules and meetings ... what meant that he was half a
politician. He could sense the urgency in Fisher's words
and he knew that Commodore's gf was the CMO on Chimera ...
so he nodded immediately and said: "I understand, I
contact the Commodore, please stand by".

It took less then half a minute before Shane's face
appeared on the screen: "Lieutenant Fisher" Shane said,
"what happened? Where is Rangi?" he asked with deep
concern in his voice.

Scott didnt hesitate but came straight to the point. " I'm
sorry Sir...she's in a stasis unit as of about an hour ago."

Shane was taken unprepared by this ill news. His face went
somewhat white and he asked: "What happened?"

"She complained of feeling unwell a couple of days ago. I
treated her for nausea which she'd had morning and evening
for a few days. She told me though that she'd felt unwell
for a week or more...since before she left Unity. This
afternoon she called me to her office and told me she
couldnt continue as CMO. She was obviously far from well and
we took her to an emergency room."
Now he stopped because the positive news was coming to an
end.

"Her condition deteriorated rapidly Sir. Dr Syrok and
I..were working against something we don't understand
Sir."

Shane shook his head: "Once again and slowly,
Lieutenant" he requested. "You say that Rangi was
feeling unwell for a couple of days and you don't know
what's the reason?"

" Yes Sir." Scott replied." Thats...thats correct. I thought
it was a stomach upset...something of that nature."

"And now her condition is that dangerous that you put her
in stasis? DO I understand you right that is in danger of
dying?" his face was now quite white.

Scott understood the anger that faced him from the screen
though he had somehow expected Shane to take things more
calmly. Later he would ask himself why he had thought that
but now he answered ina level and unhurred tone: " No
sir,...she's in stasis...she wont die."

"What the hell are you for a doctor !?" Shane yelled,
"she complained to you a couple of days ago and you were
not competent enough to help her !?"

Scott had no immediate answer for Shanes accusations were,
in a way, well founded.

" I treated her for what I believed to be the problem Sir. "
he responded "..unfortunately that didnt prove to be the
answer."

Shane took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment.
When he spoke again, the anger in his voice was gone ...
{but where?} "I am sorry, doctor. I am sure you did
everything possible to her Rangi. I ... I apologize"

"No need Sir. I'm sorry that i have to tell you this." Scott
replied.

Shane took a deep breath again and asked: "Could the
ROmulans be involved in this in any way? I have some
references from Intel that Romulans might be interested in
Rangi's life ... or death …"

Shanes words added to the veiled warning that Rojac had
given Scott earlier. It began to fit too well. "There could
be a possibility." he replied slowly but added " I cant say
Sir....honestly...I have no idea what's wrong with her. "

Shane looked down and Scott could guess the helplessness. "
Commodore." he said in a stronger tone and waiting until
Shane looked up then asked :" I need your help. I've
requested details of everything that Rangi ate and
drank...all the replicated snacks and meals. I have to start
there...but I want you to think...was there anything else
that she consumed...anything at all. Did she make a meal
herself? Did you give her...chocolates...or..anything like
that?"

"Hmm … " Shane thougt, "I am not certain, but I
think Rangi had a meal in some restaurant the day she left
UNITY. I was busy and couldn't join her, but I am not sure
where and when. I'll ask Captain Joeleco, our Chief
security to track down Rangi's movement for the last
several days and get in touch with you"

" Another thing Sir...have you or Martin been unwell? Have
either of you experienced anything thats bothered you? I ask
because this began before Rangi left Unity. It didn't
originate aboard Chimera."

Shane shook his head: "No, both of us are all right.
Martin in not on board the UNITY for a week now, but I know
that he was all right even yesterday. I have no health
problem either, so I suppose whatever happened … it
happened to Rangi alone"

Scott gave an inward sigh. It had been too much to hope that
the Commodore or his son had been unwell...not that he
wanted them to be but it could have helped if they had
been.

" It would seem so Sir." he replied sounding a bit deflated.
" I'd appreciate all help that Joeleco can give...and if you
think of anything...anything at all that rangi
did..ate..drank..where she went...anything out of the
ordinary..please tell me. I'm grasping at straws but
hopeful of finding a lead soon." He tried to sound
optimistic.

Shane nodded: "Of course, doctor. I'll contact now
Captain Joeleco and tell my aide that you're green to
contact me at any time. I'd like to ... ask you to report
me any news regarding Rangi's state. Please don't
hesitate to ask for any help or resources you think might be
needed."

"Red alert!" Shane called. Turning to Vlimar he called:
"report!"

Vlimar looked back at Shane and said with his voice full of
excitement: "Something just passed through our shields!"

"Damn" Shane said and thought about the Romulans.
Turning to the TAC officer, e asked: "Did the sensors pick
the configuration of the intruder vessel?"

"Yes, sir" replied the TAC Officer, "the vessel
appears to be organic, resembling to a wood like structure.
It's a one man vessel, but sensors picked up five life
signatures. One is definitely human, but the other four of
unknown origin"

Shane sighed. "Where is the intruder now?" he asked.

"Docking platform one" replied the flight ops officer.
"The human creature left the vessel and is proceeding to
the promenade deck. The four unknown life forms stayed with
the vessel".

"Intruder alert!" Shane called. "Security to the
promenade deck!"

======= Promenade deck ======

Shane joined the security team and all of them were now
barricaded just behind the entry door, from where the human
creature was about to enter the deck. Ten veteran marines
were just checking their type IIIb rifles and aimed the
door. Suddenly, a loud noise echoed thorough the whole
promenade deck and all the marines nested uneasily.

Finally … the door began to open.

A fat, red clad figure, with a long white beard appeared in
the door: "Hohohooooo … merry Christmas everyone!!"

====== Shane's quarters ======

With a cry Shane woke up and sit up in his bed. He looked
around his dark and quiet quarters and was quite startled
about the sudden change of scenery. He needed a minute to
realize that he was in his quarters and the even of Father

+Priority one message coming from, UNITY. It sounds urgent.+

"All priority one messages are, Lieutenant." Rojac said,
wiping the grit from his eyelids. "Patch it through to here,

+Aye sir.+

Rojac sat up and walked over to the closet along his wall,
he pulled out a duty shirt, and a captain's vest to look
semi-appropriate for the late night call. He made it over to
the small desk in his room and pressed the button accepting
the call from UNITY.

"Rojac here."
On the other end of the screen, Vlimar and Shane appeared.
Vlimar briefed Shane about the transmission and Shane agreed
that this matters was urgent and needed immediate attention.
There was no need to return to the OPS center and Shane

[USS Chimera] SD 240812.24 || JL || Lt Fisher, (A)CMO & Capt Rojac, CO ||

*** CMOs Office * USS Chimera-C ***

Scott sat down on Rangi's chair in the CMOs office and put
through a call to the Captain. It was late and he expected
that Rojac would probably be sleeping or at least preparing
to do so and when the call was not answered immediately he
was not surprised.

He glanced up at the shaded windows as he waited for a reply
then dropped his gaze to a couple of holographs on the desk
in front of him. One was of Martin and Shane, the other of
Shane alone. He met the holographic eyes, knowing he must
call the Commodore as soon as he'd explained the situation
to Rojac.

Rojac had finished the late night emergency briefing with
the Commodore and the Colonel and was busy studying the
specifications of the sensor outposts. He was wide awake
when Sickbay's call came through. He closed out some of the
files he was working on before connecting to the link.

+Rojac here.+ The Captain said as his image appeared on
Rangi's desk. +Lieutenant Fisher? Is something wrong?+

"Yes Sir...some bad news. Commander Summers has been taken
ill and has indicated that I should assume the acting CMO
role..may I ask that you to make it official?"

+Certainly, though I would like to know more about Commander
Summer's current condition.+ Rojac's eyebrows furrowed in
thought. It couldn't be mere coincidence. The Tal' Shiar
were after Guzman and his family, and Rojac was highly
suspicious.

"She's in stasis Sir. She had been feeling off colour for a
while and despite various attempts to treat her, we haven't
been successful yet. Her condition deteriorated rapidly and
I had no choice but to use a stasis unit until we find an
answer.

I'm going to contact Commodre Guzman and inform him of the
Commander's condition. I'm also going to request  a detailed
report of all meals she replicated whilst on board Unity. We
thought at first that it could have been something she ate
or drank and though its certainly worth investigating that,
I'm not  certain now that that will be the cause."

+Whatever you need to do, Lieutenant.+ Rojac said. +Are you
sure she didn't catch this aboard the Chimera?+

"No Sir..it definately originated before she came aboard
Chimera. She had felt off colour for a few days before that
so we have to assume she came into contact with whateveritis
either on the Starbase or even on Aeran 3."

+Understood.+ Rojac replied. +But even so, cover all bases,
Dr. Fisher. For reasons I cannot disclose, this case takes
your top priority at the moment. Find the cause of her
affliction and solve it. If possible see if you can track
the source.+

Scott gave the briefest of nods as Rojac added:

+But keep this on a need-to-know basis with your staff that
you assign to assist you. Understood?+

"Yes Sir...understood." Scott acknowledged and the
communication ended.

He remained motionless, his arm across the desk with fingers
resting near the terminal. Once again, his eyes focused onto the holographs set to the
left side of the desk and the smiling faces of the Commodore
and little Martin Guzman.

{Keep this on a need to know basis} Rojac's words echoed in
his mind. Rangi's condition was his top priority without
Rojac's order, but he now realized that finding the cause and
a cure held a deeper meaning than he had imagined.

In the Ready Room, Captain Rojac rubbed at his temples as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Things were heating up fast. First, the possibility that the secret sensor network had been compromised by the Romulans, and now his CMO may have been nearly assassinated by the Tal' Shiar. He hoped nothing else drastic would happen soon...

[USS Chimera] SD 240812.23 || BACKLOG || Security Inspection JL ||

[Brig and Armory - Deck 12 - USS Chimera-C]

Captain Rojac returned the marines' salutes as he approached the armory doors. "Good morning, Private." He said as the doors sighed to the side. He paused for a moment inside the doors, looking past the front desk to the first senior officer he noticed, the Master at Arms, Master Chief Johnson.

"Chief Johnson," Rojac called out. "Could you summon Lieutenant Jardan for me?"

"Aye, sir," responded Johnson and he pressed a button on the desk +Lt JG Jardan, please report to the brig.+ "He should arrive shortly, sir."

Five minutes later Tommy walked into the brig. After nodding to the chief he walked up to Rojac and saluted, "Sir, Jardan reporting. how may I help you?" Tommy waited for Rojac's response.

Rojac quickly returned the salute before responding. "Yes, Lieutenant. I'm here for my inspection. Is there any news on the crewmen here in the brig?"

Tommy made his report. "Sir, I have currently four crewmembers being held as a result of our scans for Romulan or Xenon infiltrators. As for the ship, we have gone over her with a fine toothed comb. So far everything checks out as being normal and safe." Tommy took out a padd from his pocket, " Here is the hard copy of the investigations and notes I have made as I walked the ship."

Rojac took the padd and briefly perused over the abstract at it's start. "Excellent work. Though, see what you can do about these notes you made about the gaps in the transporter inhibitors. Perhaps the operations department can scrounge up a few more resources to help you plug them."

"I will get with them straight away, sir." Tommy nodded to Johnson, who took some notes.

"Show me to the armoury, Lieutenant. I here there's some new weaponry at our disposal." Rojac requested.

Tommy turned and strode to the armory door. he entered his command code and the doors opened. Looking back at Rojac, Tommy said, " If you follow me? The information is correct." Tommy walked over to a wall and took down a weapon, giving it to the Captain. " Sir, this is a plasma shotgun, commionly refered to a an assault gun. Very nasty and effective. I wish I had some on the old Chimera, although the marine contigent at the time eould not give us any."

Rojac held the but of the shotgun beneath his armpit and sighted down the barrel. It was a nice gun of sturdy construction. Rojac felt sorry for any sentient being that was ever stuck on the business end.

Tommy took back the rifle and took down another. " I do not know why, but we have four of these, sir. It's called the tr-116. It's a sniper rifle. Not very useful in a intraship battle, but if we get into a planetside hostage situation, It will prove to be useful." Tommy waited for Rojac took look over the rifle.

"I'll see if I can find some situation where you can try it out, Lieutenant." Rojac smiled, before shouldering the weapon and testing the scope. "Interesting. I bet it could come in very useful. I might have to test it in the firing range later."

Tommy nodded, "Yes, we also got some of the new combat tricorders. I like them. I have already tried one in the holodeck combat simulator and it works perfectly."

"Glad to hear it." Rojac replied, and handed back the TR-116. "Well Lieutenant, everything looks good to me. Are there any concerns you wish to raise at this time?"

Tommy shook his head. "Not at this time, sir. Except that we have not broken the suspects in the brig. I will try to send you a report on what we find if we do sir." Tommy came to attention.

"See that you do, Lieutenant. I want to know what they know before we have to transfer them to UNITY custody." Rojac said. He looked at his chronometer. "Well, I have another appointment. This has been most beneficial, Lieutenant Jardan." Rojac returned the security chief's salute. "As you were."

***Sickbay***

Tommy entered sickbay clutching a datapadd in his hand.
Looking around, he spotted a desk with an orderly seated
behind and he walked to the desk.
"I'm looking for Commander Summers. I am Lt JG Jardan
and I have an appointment." The
orderly pointed to a door across the room and he thanked
her, then went to the door and rang the chime.

"Enter.." Rangi called, raising her head as she
spoke,looking towards the door.
She had the beginnings of a headache and frowned a little as
she
waited for Jardan to approach.
" What can I do for you?" she asked " It sounded urgent."

Tommy came to the point." I brought the scans with me,
Ma'am. I asked the operator if he could have been mistaken
and he says no. I believe him. He has over 15 years of
experience in what he does."

"Scans?" she asked "...please..take a seat." she added not
wanting to look up at him. She watched him sit down.
" Explain please." she said.

"We have arrested two of your crewmembers and we are holding
them in the brig...
I assumed you had been informed." Tommy clearded his throat
and continued, " The scans
indicated that they are Romulan, engineered to pass as
human."

Rangi expression became incredulous and she reached to
accept the padd he offered her and activated it as Jardan
continued:
" I'm not sure how they managed to go this long undetected.
Starfleet's usually pretty thorough
with the backgrouds checks and medical screenings."

She didnt reply but began reading. The evidence was crystal
clear yet she was astounded that the two could have
infiltrated the medical staff so easily and successfully.

" Is the captain aware of this?" she asked then shook her
head." I'm sorry..my arrival here was very much at the last
minute and I havent yet had time to read all these." She
laid a hand on a neat pile of padds awaiting attention on
the right hand side of her desk.

"Yes The Captain is aware of the results. And the arrests."
Tommy waited a beat and continued,
"will this affect the medical department any?"

Rangi paused in thought. " No..no it shouldnt. Unless.." she
remet his eyes. "...do you suspect that there might be
others?" Her immediate thought was for Shanes warning of the
Talshiar hit list.

"Yes, I do. However, until there has been time for
engineering to work out the
bugs..." Tommy sighed. And then noted the look on Rangi's
face. He caught the message in her eyes.

" Understood. Please keep an eye out for any unusual
behavior. The
scans even may have missed some." Tommy made as if to leave,
"I am sorry to
have this happen as you are reporting in. I will be around
if you need anything."

"Thankyou." Rangi replied, still taking in the news he had
brought and thinking what repercussions there might be. He
turned near the door and added;

"By the way... I have also been tasked with the job of
ensuring that every department is ready
for duty. Basically, it means sending your reports to me so
I can forward them to Lt. Commander
Trzetrzewski. The captain wants me to make sure the reports
are legitamate." Tommy made a face of distaste,
as if he thought that it was taking security a bit far.

"Well if he thinks its essential then ofcourse I''ll do it."
Rangi said "Thankyou."

====== Operations Department Control Center, USS
Chimera ===

Alongside most other (besides those on duty) members of the
operations department, Dexter found himself in the
Operations Department Control Center, where their boss ...
Chief operations officer was about to address them.

Like on many other ships, operations was the heart of
Chimera. Captains might issue orders, security might chase
intruders and Engineering might be in charge of the warp
core ... but if the Captain's orders were not passed to the
crew, security informed about where to find the intruder and
Warp core power distributed along the ship ... nothing would
work as expected.

Seating himself in the 2nd row of seats, Dexter awaited what
would happen next.

Jade was in her office going over something, mainly signing
orders to get some equipment replicated and make sure that
all the power levels were in normal range when she realized
that she was late for the departmental meeting that she set
up in the conference room.

Jade walked out of her office to the conference room with
tablet in hand walking in she saw that it was full up to the
fourth row, "alright I want to make this quick, so we can
get back to work." Jade said tapping a few buttons to
brining up a list to show what needs to be done and which
needs to be done first.

"Alright I'm going to put a team together to go help the
Engineer department on getting the transporters up and
working and then I'll be setting up teams to help keep an
eye on power consumptions and then a team for replicating
equipment and furnishings for crew quarters. Any questions?"
Jade asked looking around the room.

Dexter did not move ... of course ... drawing attention to
one was never a good idea. But not everyone shared this view
and surely not Ensign Baco. Fresh from the academy, Baco was
eager to show his qualities and earn a promotion as soon as
possible.

"If I might suggest, ma'am" he said, "we should concentrate
on our own field of business – operations. I know that
Engineering needs help, but when the Captain will ask for a
status report, it would be great if you could say that all
OUR tasks are done and double checked"

{Damn another young cocky SF recruit} Jade thought, "what's
your name again Ensign?" Jade asked.

"Ferdinand Baco, ma'am" Baco replied. "Passed the academy as
the best from the class and finished my SSF training with
flying colors!" he added. {Let her know who I am!} he
thought.

"Your suggestion is noted Ensign, but we're going to things
my way." Jade said looking around the room. " I also want to
pair up senior officers with the new recruits to get used to
working on the bridge I'll have those ready in a few hours
and who ever has the first shift on the bridge I'll just
pair you up right now." Jade said.

Baco bowed to the will of his superior, but still thought
that he was right. Dexter watched the young ensign with a
mixture of jealousy and irony. He was no young fresh cadet
anymore, serving in Special forces for 5 years now, under
four distinct COs. From Bretam, through Guzman, Ohmsford and
now Rojac. The CO might change, but Dexter was still the
same.

Jade just nodded before moving on, "alright I'll be posting
the teams up on the monitor behind me once we're completed
get into your groups and head out to your assignments." Jade
said tapping a few buttons and the list popping up on the
monitor.

"Oh could LtJg Dexter and Ens Baco please see me in my
office after you see where you need to be." Jade said over
the commotion of people standing up to get a better view of
the monitor.

Baco looked with pride and eagerness on his fellow mates
while Dexter was somewhat uneasy. He did not say a word …
{how the hell did she came across me?} he thought.

"shane.guzman@mojwap.sk" <shane.guzman@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

======= Main OPS, SB 234: UNITY
======

It was not a custom, but Shane was sitting in the high seat
that was rightfully his … command seat of SB 234: UNITY.
He was usually too busy with Task Force business to take
care of daily UNITY business and this seat was manned by the
three officers of the watch … or Colonel DuPont.

But today, Shane made an exception and spend a shift in the
main ops. Yesterday, his team recorded a broadcast message
and it was time to send it. It was addressed to everyone on
the base and made several things that were already reality
… officially.

Looking at the officer behind the ops console, Shane asked:
"Are we ready?"

Some young LtJg replied: "Yes, Commodore. The message is
ready to be broadcasted on all stations monitors and
computer panels, inclusive all big screen panels on the
promenade decks."

Shane nodded and send: "Start it".

Within a few seconds, everywhere on the station the face of
Commodore Shane Guzman appeared saying:

"Ladies and gentleman, officers and crew, inhabitants of
SB UNITY and dear guests … I'd like to inform you all
about the current situation on Starbase 234: UNITY. As most
of you are aware, this station is since a few months under
Starfleet Special Forces jurisdiction and my command. This
months were used to strengthen the defensive capabilities of
this station and several other Engineering adjustments. I
say nothing new … we are at war with the Romulan Empire
and UNITY is the command node for all Starfleet operations
in this sector. Our position is of great strategical value
and so is this station."

Shane paused before continuing:

"You have surely noticed that there is a lot more military
traffic on the base and this wont change for the duration of
this conflict, but I'd like to stress that UNITY in NOT an
military outpost, but a public open starbase that welcomes
business and trade from all the quadrant. Every ship docking
on the UNITY will be carefully scanned and when needed,
searched by a security team, but I say reassure you, unless
you are Romulan or transport forbidden goods, weapons or
explosives … you will be allowed to dock and enter this
starbase. This station needs trade … Federation needs
trade and all business man, woman and business-creatures are
welcome"

There was a second pause:

"With Special Forces jurisdiction come some restrictions
however. UNITY is divided into three distinct sections. The
first one … with deck numbers and IDs painted in green is
publicly accessible and under watch of Promedade security.
Everyone might freely enter this zone and enjoy the
pleasantries of this station. The second zone, with
paintings in blue, is Starfleet zone … only Starfleet
personnel is authorized to enter here. This zone is under
watch of Starbase security. Unauthorized visitors will be
escorted out of the area immediately. The third area is
Special Forces zone and only accessible to special forces
personnel. I'd like to warn everyone that unauthorized
access to this area means immediate arrest. We are @ war and
the Task Force area is under martial law and watched by Task
Force security forces. Color used in this decks is gray. You
might find exact deck listing with zones @ every computer
panel."

Now came the third pause:

"Thank you for your time and I hope all of you will enjoy
your time on Starbase 234: UNITY"

With that, all screens went black, before returning to their
usual state and function. Shane grinned slightly in his
seat. He was not a big speaker, but from time to time, the
need for a speech arose and he had to do his best. The
results were often quite doubtfully … but there were
usually few to complain.

*** CMO Office * Sickbay * Chimera-C ***

Rangi sank down onto her chair and breathed out a long
breath. She leaned back in her seat, pressing the palm of
her hand against her forehead in a futile attempt to ease
the sudden searing headache that had struck. It didnt help
much and she reached out to press the button that would make
the office windows become opaque.

*
Scott Fisher was perched on a stool in one of the medlabs
humming somewhat tunelessly to himself as he read through a
series of results.
'"Fisher." he said in responce to the chirrup of his
commbadge.

+Taps + Scott...can you come to my office...immediately.+

He could tell by the sound of her voice that something was
not right and frowning, he replied:
+Taps+ On my way+ ....already disentangleing his long legs
from the stool.

It took him less than a minute to arrive at the CMOs office
and seeing it screened, he tapped on the door which slid
open for him.
{Jeeeez} he thought when he saw her and hurriedly crossing
the distance to where she sat asked : " Whats wrong?".

" I feel dreadful." she said " ....I cant continue..you're
acting CMO as of now."

He took little notice of her words and glanced quickly
around the room thinking that there was never a medtricorder
about when you needed one.
" Whats happened to you?" he asked laying a hand on her
shoulder and leaning forward to look at her face.

" I just feel so ill." she said "...feverish and weak...I
cant stay on duty like this....I just can't deal with it."

"Don't worry about that." Scott said straightening up. "
Lets get you to a room. Can you stand?"

"Yes." she said but needed to take his arm for support as
they crossed to the door.
" Get Nurse Fleming please." Scott said to a young nurse who
was passing as they appeared in the door way. " Emergency
Room two."
"Yes sir." she replied looking at Rangi in a startled way.

"Come on..nice a steady." Scott said gently holding Rangis
arm but feeling her need more support at each step.
Lucy had joined them by the time they reached the emergency
room but in a few minutes, she and Scott both knew that they
faced a crisis.

For his part, Scott had never seen a patient deteriorate so
quickly.
They treated as best they could with Neodextraline
Leporazine and a Morathial drug but nothing was making a
difference, at least not for long.

Scott summoned help in the form of Lieutenant Syrok, a
Vulcan doctor who had worked aboard Chimera-B. Neither could
find a solution to prevent what appeared to be a fast moving
shut down to Rangis body where one systen after another was
beginning to fail.
Rangi herself was, by this time, incapable of offering
opinion and when Syrok stood back indicating that Scott move
away from the biobed too she was not able to hear his
suggestion.

" Doctor Fisher." he said in measured tone. " The most
logical move is to place the Commander into a Stasis Unit as
we are unable to confirm the cause of her illness. I suggest
we do so within the next ten minutes. That will give us the
necessary time to work through her symptoms from the
beginning."

Scott looked towards the bed. " I think you're right." he
said and moved back to Rangis side.
"Rangi...we need more time...we're going to use a stasis
unit...do you understand?"

She opened her eyes and moved her head slightly as though
trying to nod.

"You'll be fine." Scott said and Syrok wondered at the
wisdom or need to tell patients such platitudes. It was
something he had never become accustomed to although he
occasionally resorted to such phrases himself when treating
human patients..
" I will prepare the unit." he said leaving Scott and Lucy
to move the biobed into the stasis room.

It was done with efficiency and soon all three stood beside
the unit as Scott monitored the suspension of all cellular
activity in their patient.
When it was done Scott looked at his companions.
"I'll inform the Captain...and the Commodore." he said.
Syrok inclined his head in silent agreement and Lucy nodded.
"Then we'll get to the bottom of this." he said looking more
at Rangi than the others.

He strode purposefully back to the CMOs office, leaving the
windows in their opaque form and making straight for the
desktop terminal.
He placed a call to Captain Rojac and informed him what had
happened, that the Commander was currently in a stasis unit
and that as yet he had no idea what was causing her illness.

That done he contacted Starbase unity and while he waited
for the connection, he tried to frame the words he would use
to Shane.

"Odd," Mimi answered as she drew her eyebrows together as if feeling
some discomfort.

Gustav squeezed her hand a little more as if to reassure her that
every thing will be all right.

Rangi entered the room and paused for a split second on seeing Gustav
beside Mimi's bed.

" Miss Hopeler.... Mr Kroitzer..." she said continuing on and looking
at Mimi asked " How are you feeling? Can you tell me what happened?"
She lifted the medpadd from the end of the bio bed as she spoke and
began to read.

"We had a picnic," Mimi started and looked at Gustav as if getting
confirmation of the fact. "And I was on my way to our quarters to put
things away when... I'm sorry I start to get fuzzy there."

"Its alright." Rangi said " Don't worry about it. Have you had this
happen to you before?"

"No never..." Mimi let her words die away as a small pang disrupted
her thoughts.

Rangi set the padd aside." You mentioned a picnic… can you tell me
what you ate? I ask because your blood sugar is very high."

"Let's see... there was sparkling cider...." Mimi closed her eyes and
reached a hand up to rub her forehead.

Gustav seeing Mimi's discomfort answered Rangi's question for her
"Some chicken salad sandwiches, dried apricots, some crisps and
cupcakes".

"Oh yeah," she gave a slight smile adding, "And you made me eat two so
you wouldn't have to feel guilty about the 3 or 4 you ate."

Looking back at Mimi Gustav felt gave a guilty smile.

Rangi looked at him too and then began another scan on Mimi but
stopped after a few seconds. "You have a redness there " she said,
lowering the medtricorder and peering more closely at Mimi's neck. "
Has it been like that for long?"

"I don't think it was there this morning," Mimi said, but swung
another look Gustav's way as if wanting him to confirm her thoughts.

Gustav thought back to the morning trying to remember if he saw
anything on Mimi's neck "not that I can remember… sorry" he said.

Mimi gasped with the twinge of pain she felt in her abdomen, "I kind
of feel a bit crampy."

"Oh?" Rangi altered the scan, concentrating on the area that
Mimi had placed a hand on. She said nothing but perhaps
mindful of the recent examination that Scott had done for
her, spent some time on indepth scan of Mimi's lower abdomen. There
was no sign of a pregnancy and Rangi wondered if Mimi
had considered it.

Mimi's eyes fluttered and she wiped a hand across her forehead before
it fell limply to her side.

Worried about Mimi Gustav asked " how do you feel?"

The answer was apparent very quickly but before Rangi could utter a
word, Mimi's eyes popped open and she blurted out, "I feel..." she
grabbed the tray that was thrust her direction and immediately threw
up. She fell back to the bed looking even
paler than before.

"It's your Appendix..." Rangi said "Don't worry... easily solved." She
glanced from Mimi to Gustav and back again." We can remove it...no
problem"

Gustav just looked relived that it was something easily sorted and
that Mimi would be fine.

Mimi tried not to think about the pain at her side and
closed her eyes.

Rangi turned to Gustav. " If you want to wait you can of course...but
it might be better if you occupied your mind with something? There's
really no need to worry...its a
short and simple operation and Miss Hopeler will be feeling much
better very soon. ok?" She looked at him as though the decision was
already made the turning to the nurse in attendance requested that Dr
Mathieson be called to perform the surgery in unit one. "Come back in
an hour or so." Rangi said returning her attention to Gustav. "She'll
be accepting visitors by then."

Gustav Just nodded to Rangi knowing what she said about occupying his
mind was right but before he left he turned and softly kissed Mimi on
the cheek and whispered, "I love you" into her ear.

=/\= MISSION SUMMARY/QUOTES OF THE WEEK =/\=
==============================================
-------------------------
- Summary (by Rangi and Ixus! The Dynamic duo!)
-------------------------
 Rangi:

Rangi and Scott attend a meeting of Chimera-Cs sickbay
crew.Later she sought his help with medication for herself.
Junior counsellor Mnnemosyme Nyx told Shane she suspected
that he might be under threat from Tal'shiar forces.
Suspicious that she seemed to 'guess' so much, Shane ordered
that she have a full scan to confirm her identity. It was
confirmed.
Rangi hadnt been feeling well for some days and asked Scott
to prescribe medication for her. A pregnancy test proved
negative, something that Rangi found both a relief and
disappointment.Scott gave anit sickness drugs which began to
help.
Vlimar invited Nym to dinner or for a glass of late wine at
least. She accepted.
Athena ate lunch with Dexter and offered to recommend him if
he applied for a transfer of position.
Mai made the quarters she and Rachel would share more
homely.
Jade went to meet Athena to discuss her new found skill in
Telepathy. Athena warned her to use it carefully.
Senior Counsellor Stephen Jacobs had a meeting with Shane to
ask why Nyms identity had been checked. He advised Shane to
remember that the young counsellor was still in training but
that no counsellor ever new all the answers.
Alecto healed her own injuries with Nym in attendance.
Athena was trapped in a lift and Mimi collapsed after eating
too many cupcakes.

Ixus:

Cropa visits Operations where he highlights a couple of concerns that he has regarding a few systems on the ship to Jade.  After that he visits Rangi in sickbay where they talk equipment and biological warfare countermeasures. Previous to his inspection tour Cropa had a psych exam with Athena...the findings?  He's not nuts so he's still in charge...isn't that an oxymoron?  Cropa continues his tour visiting Engineering meeting Curtis and Gustav where tensions are made evident within the department.  Anya shows the good Captain around the Flight Ops department and recieves a warning about playing nice with others.  Gustav learns of Mimi's collapse and rushes to sickbay to be by her side.  Anya meets Athena who isn't acting like herself.  Athena touches her head and her bloody fingers leads Anya to call for a medic.  So does Mimi have a bun in the oven?  How did Alecto get injured?  And what is the meaning of life?  Find out next time on USS Chimera!

- Quotes of the Week (by Rangi and Ixus!)
-------------------------
 Thank heavens for Powerpoint?

She looked across the sea of faces. " In a day or so Captain
Rojac will be paying us a visit. I do 'not' want him to get
a good impression." She paused noting the mix of surprised
or confused expressions. "An impression is just that." she
explained "..something that illustrates what things could be
like. We will make sure that the Captain doesnt get an
'impression'..he will have a presentation.

I think random drug tests sound appealing!

Vlimar smiled. "Oh, I am just wonderful, how about
yourself?", he asked. "Is it raining out?", he asked,
sarcastically.

Lieutenant Colonel Vlimar 'Chocolate Starfish' PontBrillant

***

I think he needs a date...

He paused for a moment, gathering his
thoughts before saying: "To be honest Commander, it's
not very common that high ranking officers sit with me at
one table and women even less. You're both of that and I
ask myself what I have done wrong to earn your attention
…"

Lieutenant JG Martin 'Always The Bridesmaid...' Dexter

Only when hungry?.....

If you have any queries or concerns..or if any other
problems surface then please notify either Lieutenant Fisher
or myself at once." She glanced at Scott then added:
"Despite what you may have heard to the contrary, we do not
bite." "Often." Scott added and a murmur of laughter rippled
around the room.

Silence is golden?.....

Nym stood and said nothing the commodore would have his
answers soon enough. {This will be the last time I volunteer
any of my ideas.} She walked out of the office at a quick
clip and didn't even care if the other marines were keeping
up.

2nd Lieutenant Mnemosyme Nyx Jr. Counselor  SB 234-Unity

Botanical fact...plants like coffee?..................

She accepted the coffee and gave it a sniff before drinking
it.  {Smells good...}  She took a sip {Ohhhhh... gross....
ummmm.}  She looked around her and noticing the potted plant
near by spit what was in her mouth there.

Prince Charming.......

He took a seat next to Mimi's bed and gently took hold of
her hand and
brought it up to his face kissing the soft skin on the back
of her
hand wishing she would wake up and everything would be
alright.

* SUBJECT LINES/LOGGING GUIDELINES/WEBSITE NEWS/IRC INFO *
==============================================
-------------------------
- Subject Lines
-------------------------
Please remember to use the following format for your subject lines:
SD 24YYMM.DD, Duty/Personal Log, Rank Name
e.g., SD 240502.01, CO's Log, Capt Rojac
e.g., SD 240502.01, Personal Log, Cropa Rojac
The [USS Chimera] part of the subject is placed automatically by the listserv, so you don't need to include it.
Also remember to include your details at the end of your log
e.g.,
Captain Cropa Rojac
Commanding Officer
USS Chimera NX 96899-B
-------------------------
- Logging Guidelines
-------------------------
Logging:
The weekly logging deadline is at Midnight (12:00AM/00:00) GMT/UTC (19:00 EST); all logs received after the deadline will be counted for the following week. If you are pressed for time and would like a log to count for the previous week, but it is sent after the deadline, please send an email to the command team when you send the log so that we can make the corrections.
Please remember that all MAJOR plot changes need to be cleared with the command staff before a log goes through! You can do this by sending the command staff (chimera-command@ucip.org ) a log labeled with "Draft" tagged to the subject line. We'll typically let you know if it's approved within 24 to 48 hours, or tell you what might need to be modified before it's sent to the listserv.
When using other characters in your logs, please keep in mind that person's characteristics. Character information can be found on the UCIP website or the USS Chimera website (under CREW - just click on the Star Trek symbol next to the character's name). If you're still unsure how to interact with a character, then privately mail the person
involved, and I'm sure they'll be willing to help.
Conversely, if you feel that your character is being portrayed incorrectly by someone please contact them to try to work out an agreeable solution. Just keep in mind when logging to treat other characters the way you'd like them to treat you - with the respect due to any member of Starfleet who is a specialist in their field.
If you think your log may be going out of bounds, then please ask! If you are having problems finding things to write about or would just like some help with your log, please contact your department head or the command team. Remember, you don't always have to log about things relating to the main plot - logs that develop your character's
personality are encouraged! We're eager to help if you're having trouble; just email the command team (
chimera-command@ucip.org).

- On Report
-------------------------
Any officer who is Absent Without Leave (0) for two or more consecutive
weeks is considered "On Report." Crewmen on report should email the command staff immediately to explain their absence (too much to do in RL is a fine excuse) and say when they anticipate being able to log again in the future.
The following crewmen are on report:

McKnight - MCap Joeleco 283 - Extension requested by Ixus. Extension granted.
-------------------------
- Removals/Resignations
-------------------------
The following crew have either resigned or have been dropped due to lack of activity. If they would like a position on the USS Chimera, they will need to reapply.
