By the time Scott returned to the research dpeartment, Syrok
already had some results from Scotts request to Unity. He
had to work from the first possible supposition that Rangis
illness originated in something she had ingested and had
asked for as many details as possible.
The Vulcan doctor turned to him as Scott enetered the room.
" Any luck?" Scott asked not really expecting anything.
Without turning his head away from the display, Syrok
answered: "Despite that luck has nothing to do with that,
there is one thing about the scans that is not all right.
Look on the level of glucosis in her blood, almost none. And
the results also show that she's anaemic. This is very
strange."
Scott nodded agreement, despite the fact Syroks back was
turned. He joined his colleague at the work bench.
"You've seen the drastic drop in levels?" he asked knowing
that Syrok would have checked everything." I've spoken to
Commodore Guzman." Scott continued " He's promised us any
help we need...anything."
"Yes." he moved to make a space for Scott. "This and her
other symptoms, fatigue, elevated temperature, dizziness and
have you noticed how pale her skin looks?" He looked
directly to Scott's eyes. "My first guess would be a
malnutrition, but so far I haven't been able to find the
cause."
" I know she hasnt been eating properly for a few
days...exactly how many I'm not sure though." he added
frowning at the thought. " Up until Thursday I think toast
had been a main staple of her diet...that and water." He
pulled forward a microscope that displayed the same sample
that Syrok had been studying.
"That would hardly be a reason for malnutrition. It is not
healthy, but a few days don't result in such severe drop of
values."
" I know that." Scott replied raising his head and glancing
sideways at the Vulcan "...but we dont know exactly how long
its been since she ate properly." He saw the eyebrow raise a
fraction on Syroks face. " Ok.." he said "...thats not the
cause of malnutrition but you're correct in saying her
symptoms suggest it." He turned back to the microscope.
"The next logical step is to test the samples for any viral
or bacteriological infection that would be able to cause
those symptoms, but that has already been done and with no
results. So now I'd suggest we look for a traces of toxins.
My hypothesis is that she might be suffering from some sort
of poisoning." He turned back to the console but then paused
for one more moment. "It also might be useful to learn
about the people she's been interacting with during past
seven days."
Scott straightened up, pushing the equipment away. " Im
hoping we'll hear about that soon." he said. "The Commodore
is asking Joeleco to trace Rangis movements...the results
for a list of replicated meals should be here anytime
soon...and I asked the Commodore whether he or their son
have been unwell. They haven't."
He seemed to consider something as he watched Syrok adjust a
setting. " Syrok." he said quietly and when the Vulcan
doctor looked at him explained:
" The Captain wants this to be a top priority case and the
Commodore has referred to something that I can share with
you on a strictly 'need to know' basis. There is a strong
possibility that Romulans are involved in this."
Such non reasonal fast conclusion startled Syrok a little
bit so he raised hiis eybrows and even leaned his head a
bit.
"The Romulans. And on what facts do you base this theory?
Has commander been contacted by Romulans or in any other way
in touch with them? By some operative, subspace messages or
any other means of communication?"
"Not as far as I know." Scott answered. ...but the
Commodore told me that Intel had indicated that Romulans
would be interested in her life...or death. I take that to
mean...that they have her on a sort of Hit List."
"Very well then, if there is evidence from Stafleet
Intelligence, then we should probably investigate the
possibility of poisoning. We should focus on a thinn colon
which is responsible for nutrition absorption. Also I'd
recommend a full spectral scan of the tissue and blood
samples. It will take longer, but will provide us with more
data."
"Agreed." Scott replied simply.
