Watching him go to the cabinet where the liquor was, she almost asked him to get her something. It wasn't because of her past issues with liquor that stoped her from asking though. "So you already knew." She said sitting on the couch, feeling a little more calm now.

“Of course I knew.” He said, turning to face her. “Hell, it was written on her face the moment she met you. I could see her undressing you with her eyes the entire time.” He turned back to the cabinet, poured himself a neat whiskey, and sipped it. “I’m her father, I know the tale-tale signs. All I can say is, she has excellent taste in women.” He allowed himself a small smirk at Chloe.

"It's not funny Richard." Chloe said, not smiling at his joke. "It's something that can cause issues. It already has." Chloe was tring so hard to be a mother for this woman who was only a few years younger than her and she was failing.

“Why? Because she was honest with you, and chose to admit to these feelings, rather than bottle them up and lie to you?” Richard asked, seriously. “Personally, I thought it was incredibly brave of her to admit it to you.”

"Try putting yourself in my place. How would you feel?" Chloe asked of him.

“I’m not saying it isn’t difficult.” Richard said. “But perhaps you should consider her feelings too? Did she make a pass at you? Did she try to seduce you? Force herself on you?”

She shook her head to all of them. "What are you getting at?"

“She’s your step-daughter, for good or for worse.” Richard said. “You’ve held that role with her for about half an hour, and already you can’t stand to be in the same room as her. She wanted to be open and honest with you, and you’ve not exactly been… receptive.”

"How am I supposed to be receptive about the fact that the woman Im supposed to be a stepmother to while she's admitting she's attracted to me?" She asked.

“How would you react if I told you half the MEF have a crush on you?” Richard retorted. “Hell, all the guys and a couple of girls on the flight deck watch you walk past. Don’t pretend you haven’t noticed.”

"I know." She said standing up from the couch to go to the replicator. "And it bothers me now. Im not like I used to be. I used to love it how I would turn attention, but I dont care about it anymore and I wish people wouldn't do that." she said getting a glass of water.

“Face it, its still going to happen. That ring on your finger doesn’t create a field of ugliness.” He said. “You’re just going to have to accept the fact that a lot of people, who like me, find you extremely attractive.” Richard walked over to Chloe, and put his hands on her hips. “Unlike anyone else though, I’m the only one who gets to do this.” He grinned and kissed her softly on the lips.

"And that's what I want Sarah to understand." She said softly pulling away from him. "I want a field of uglieness because I belong to you."

“I don’t think Sarah wants to do anything with you, because you’re her mother now, and I think it’d freak her out too much.” He said. “But I do think you should talk to her, calmly, about it, and about how you feel about it.”

She gave a nod before she took the glass of water from the replicator to take a long sip of it, washing away the taste of liquor Richard had left on her lips.

“And if it makes you feel any better, Patrick isn’t coming with me, so I’ll have him keep an eye on you two.” Richard said. “He’s her godfather, so probably the next best thing to having me around.”

"How did that work?" Chloe said surprised. "He's goes everywhere with you." Chloe said surprised.

“He wasn’t invited.” Richard said, simply. “Plus, I need him to work with Brigadier Stirling on getting our fresh intake up to scratch.”

"Oh, Im sure he's excited about that." Chloe said rolling her eyes. "And I don't think he's a replacement for you in Sarah's life. He spoils her."

“Well, that’s his job, isn’t it?” Richard said, finishing his drink. “I’m the mean one, he’s the favorite uncle.”

“A couple months now.” Sarah said. “I just want to be my own person for a while, before I get tied down in a job.”

Chloe nodded. "I will try to understand." She wanted to, but for her knowing what a person wanted to do and get out of life was something important to her.

“Well, I know I’m not joining Starfleet.” Sarah said. “Dad more or less forbayed it.”

"He's told me. I know he wishes that I wasn't an officer eather." Chloe said sitting on the edge of her and Richard's bed.

“Its only because he cares about you.” Sarah said, sitting down next to her. “Don’t forget that he’s seen more action in the service than both of us put together. He lost my mother to the service, and my elder sister too…”

She tried to push aside the reminder of how much older Richard was than herself, shaking her head in agreement with Sarah. "I might not stay in the service much longer." Chloe said with a frown, looking away. Looking back up to Sarah, she said serious. "Don't mention this to your father. I don't want to tell him until I’m for sure that I want to leave."

“I suspect that once you become pregnant, that’ll be the clinching argument.” Sarah said. “Dad’ll never let you serve in a combat unit if you’re carrying a child. He’s had that policy with all his female marines since I’ve met him.”

Chloe took a deep breath standing up. She knew she should be pregnant, but didn't want to say anything to anyone untill she was sure she was. Putting a smile on her face, she turned to look at Sarah. "You say that as if your sure that I will become pregnant." Chloe had never mentioned it to Sarah.

“I’ve overheard you guys when you think I’ve not been around.” Sarah said, smirking.

"Overheard or ease droped?" Chloe gave an amused smile.

“Bit of both.” She smiled. “Besides, I’m envious of my Dad.”

What Sarah said deffently started to make Chloe uncomfortable. She had a good idea why too. "Im sure that's something you shouldn't tell your father. I am only his." She wanted to get her point across with out sounding rude.

“Oh, don’t worry.” Sarah said, moving away from Chloe slightly. “You’re my mother now, it’d just be wrong… on so many levels. I’m merely saying that I find you attractive, is all. Just because I’m interested in girls, doesn’t mean I want to sleep with just any old girl.” Sarah started to sound rather upset. Even in this day and age, homophobia was still prevalent.

It wasn't that Chloe had felt akward with Sarah's lifestyle, but more so with Sarah's even so slight attraction to her. "I didn't mean anything of the sort." Chloe said, with a little edge in her tone that she didn't purposely mean to be present.

“Chloe, you’re just going to have to accept it. You’re not much older than I am, you’re drop dead gorgeous, and I think you’re hot. Doesn’t mean I’m going to try and do anything about it.” Sarah said, firmly, raising her voice.

"My age has nothing to do with it." Chloe told Sarah firmly. On so many levels Chloe felt if she was much older than Sarah. Her and Richard had finally moved on past the age difference and she didn't want Sarah viewing herself like that. "It doesn't matter what I look like, Sarah." Chloe's tone was starting to match Sarah's. Chloe normally had a soft temperament, but it might of been because of changing hormones that she was letting herself match Sarah's.

At that moment, Richard entered the bedroom. “I heard raised voices as I came in, what’s going on?” He asked, looking between the two ladies. Sarah had turned deep red and was looking at the ground shyly.

"Excuse me." Chloe said after a moment's silence, brushing past Richard in the doorway. She was bothered that she let Sarah get her on edge like that because it wasn't normal for her.

Richard noticed the edge in Chloe’s demeanor, turned to look at Sarah, who wouldn’t meet his gaze. He frowned and walked out after Chloe. “Chloe…” He called after her,

She stoped in the living room, taking a deep breath. "A moment please." She said, then after a few secconds passed, she looked to Richard.

“I’m gone for ten minutes, and you two have a fight?” He asked, incredibly. “What happened?”

"We didn't have an argument, just more so a difference of an opinion." Chloe said, her arms crossed over her chest.

“And that has you the most rattled I’ve seen you?” He asked, sternly. “Are we really going to start our marriage off by lying to one another?”

"No... no were not going to start like this." She started to lower her tone to more of a softness that she normally had. "Sarah was just being honest about her views, and which made me uncomfortable. Things just got worse from there." She let her arms fall from her chest to seem more open.

“Are we going to have problems here?” He asked, seriously, folding his own arms over his chest, looking at her.

"Im tring to avoid them, Richard." She was still sounding a little more prissy than normal, but it wasn't as bad as before.

Richard sighed. “I’ve been selected from the task force to attend a war planning conference on Earth.” He said. “I’ll be gone several days. Are you two going to be okay?”

Chloe knew she wanted to say no. She didn't want him to leave. "Do you want me to tell you the truth, or the answer you want me to tell you?" She asked him.

“The truth would be nice.” He said.

"Im not going to be okay with you gone. It's not because of what just happened with Sarah, I don't want you gone for awhile." The next week or so was going to be very important for her.

“If this were any old conference, I’d blow it off.” He said. “But the President will be there, and I have to go.”

Chloe nodded. "Go. I will still be here when you return." She was only scheduled to fly near the base for the next few weeks. And she wanted to get a lot of flying time in as possible.

“I hope so, after all the trouble you’ve been to get me to this point, I’d hate to think you’d run off with some handsome bloke.” He smirked.

"I don't think some handsome bloke is the issue here, Richard." She said glancing back at their bedroom door where Sarah still was.

Richard raised an eyebrow. “Is there something you want to tell me?”

"A few things that were said made me uncomfortable." She told him simply, but then went on, "Her personal choices don't bother me, but when I personal was put in the conversation."

“Oh, I see.” Richard said. “She told you she had a crush on you, didn’t she?”

"Not in so few words." Chloe said, still feeling a little uncomfortable, especally talking to Richard about it.

“I was afraid something like this might happen.” He said, and took a couple of steps towards the cabinet holding his liquor, and pausing. “She’s mentioned it to me, before the wedding, that she had a thing for you. I wasn’t expecting her to actually tell you.”

Stepping off the transport, Chloe had her hand softly in Richards. Their honeymoon had been much more than she had expected. And that wasn't a bad thing either. During their time there on Risa, She realized how much money he had by all the things they had done while they were there.

Richard felt a certain sadness at being back at Unity. For the last week, he’d been happier than he’d been in a very long time. It had been a very very long time since he’d had proper R&R, and he realized how much he’d missed it. There was also the added joy of being with Chloe – his new wife of only one week. He felt himself fiddling with his wedding band again, and stopped it.

Chloe had noticed him messing with his wedding band before, but hadn't said anything. This time she didn't. "Not having second thoughts are you?" She asked as they made their way to their quarters once again. Now properly theirs.

“No, its not that.” He said, honestly. “Its just it feels weird to have one on my finger again. Its just an odd feeling, is all.”

She nodded, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze. "I couldn't be happier.

" She told him making it to their quarters. "Is Sarah still here do you think?"

“Its rent free, of course she’s still here.” Richard mused. “She’s like her mother, where there be shops, spas, holodecks, replicators and rent-free accommodation, she’ll be there with bells on.”

"That's a little harsh. I’m sure she wants’ to be around you as much as everything else." When they entered their quarters, indeed she saw Sarah sitting on the couch.

“Hey guys!” Sarah said, beaming. “Hi Mom!” She grinned at Chloe, and hugged her.

Chloe felt awkward having Sarah calling her mom. "You can still call me by my name." Chloe said after getting a hug from her step daughter.

“Okay Chloe.” She said, then turned to her dad. “Hi Dad.” She said, and hugged him too.

“You can still call me Dad.” He said, gruffly, but affectionately, hugging her back.

"Have you been here the whole week we were gone?" Chloe asked Sarah, relived that Richard's daughter seemed to have no issues with her being married to her father, or at least not showing it to Chloe.

“Pretty much.” She said. “I was on the holodeck a lot of the time, with a very tasty Orion slave girl program.”

Chloe have a soft chuckle, not really sure how to reply to that. Taking her and Richard's small duffles to their bedroom to start unpacking.

Richard smiled at Sarah as Chloe left. “Go help your step-mother.” He said. “I’ve got to go check in with the office, make sure Harper hasn’t declared war on the Vulcan’s.”

“Okay Dad.” Sarah said, chuckling, and entered the bedroom after Chloe. “Need any help?” She asked.

"Sure." Chloe said half way threw a duffle, that was hers. All the clothes are clean. I didn't want to come home with dirty laundry." Chloe explained. "So they just have to be put away."

“You did laundry whilst on holiday?” Sarah said, stunned. “I know Dad is a bit dull, but he can’t have been THAT dull, so that doing laundry was more fun!”

"No, we had the hotel service do it while we were there. I didn't touch a thing." Chloe said with a laugh. Sarah didn't know how messy Chloe was, and doing the laundry was deffently not something she did often.

“Considering it was Risa, I should hope so.” Sarah said, smirking. “Was Risa every bit as good as the holo-adverts make it out to be?”

"Even better." Chloe said putting things away. She was going to try to keep things in order in Richard and her's quarters, but doubt it would last long. "What have you been up to while we were gone. I hope your father isn't going to find a huge bill in his name."

“Oh, nothing major.” Sarah said. “I flirted with a few of the new transfers, got on really well with a hot little red headed medic, about to ship out on the Dauntless. I gave her a send-off she’ll not forget…” Sarah’s eyes sparkled with untold mischief.

"It might be a good idea not to tell your father that." Chloe said putting the last of their things away.

Sarah made a ‘pfft’ noise through her mouth. “Dad says as long as I’m happy, not getting hurt, or getting myself in the brig, he’s pretty cool with what I do.”

After a moment's thoughts, Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Do you have any plans for yourself?" She wasn't asking how long she was staying, more so seeing how that Sarah had spent the last week or so doing nothing. And Richard had never mentioned what Sarah did to keep herself occupied.

“Not really.” Sarah said. “I completed my education, and now I’m sort of drifting, till I find what I’d like to do.”

"How long have you been -- drifting--?" Chloe asked, not really showing how she felt. Chloe had always known what she wanted to do in life, and it was hard looking at Sarah and seeing that she wasn't going anywhere at the moment. Especially now that Sarah was her daughter.

[USS Chimera] SD 240912.05 || JL || Arrival at Andoria's Moon

[Andoria]

The flight in provided a majestic view of the large ringed gas giant as Lieutenant Dior maneuvered the Altair for an entry trajectory into the moon's atmosphere. Soon the swirling blue gasses of the large planet were drowned out by the frigid swirling mists of the snow clouds on the home world of the Aenar and the Andorians. The helm officer of the Chimera fired up the rcs thruster systems and intertial dampeners to counteract the  turbulent weather as she guided the craft down to the landing site. It was a quick trip.

Jade was in the back finishing up her notes she then looked over at Jones, "you ready for this?" She asked smiling at the junior officer knowing that conferences could be overwhelming at times Jade hasn't actually attended one but she was on protective duty for someone at a conference.

"I think I am ma'am." Jones said returning the smile, "I'm actually looking forward to this conference it'll give me a chance to see how other cultures do things in our department." He said  as he returned to looking at the conference itinerary.

Gustav gathered up his notes on trans-warp drives and stowed them in a rucksack that sat next to his chair.

After wrapping up the post-flight check list, Rayna slapped her palms atop the console and stood. "Alright guys, I'm turning off the seatbelt sign."

"I must commend you on your piloting abilities, Ms. Dior. That was the smoothest ride under your care yet, well done," Levison smiled, inclining his head in thanks to the Lieutenant, "Let's hope that the rest of the conference goes as smoothly."

Dior smirked. "Thank you, sir. It's much easier to fly when there aren't five warbirds gunning at you."

Jade stood up and grabbed her bag glad to be almost getting off the Altair it had been a long trip but she was sure it would be worth it. Double checking that she had everything she stood and waited for the doors to the Runabout to open up and allow them into the winter wonderland that was Andoria.

Gathering his bags and throwing them over his shoulder Gustav waited patently for jade to exit the runabout first.

Jade was the first one to step out of the runabout she stepped to the side not sure of where to go, "brrr it's cold." She said used to a ship were the temperature was always the same or close to it. "Where do we go?" She said looking up at the Chief Engineer.

"Our itineraries diverge a little here, but I believe that most of the symposiums and presentations are over that way," Commander Levison gestured, pointing off to the right vaguely. He had never been to Andoria before and the biting cold was actually quite a pleasant change. 'Might even have to think about here for my next shore leave... could get some skiing done,' he thought to himself before sighing and speaking out loud, "I could be wrong of course... Mr. Kroitzer?"

"I don't care where you all are going," Dior said as she exited the runabout, her parka zipped up to her lips. "But I'm checking into my quarters first." She took off to the right, stuffing her hands deep into the synthetic down lined pockets.

[USS Chimera] SD240912.04 ||PROJECT LOS ALAMOS|| Duty Log, Cdr Rick Rodgers and Trevor Wright

=U.S.S. Descartes (science vessel)=
=Main Bridge=
=On the edge of the Columbia system=

Right now, the Columbia system was the most secure piece of real estate in the entire known galaxy.

Trevor Wright looked over the data for perhaps the final time. He wanted to make certain that everything was in order. In a few minutes, the TechEx, the one he developed all of those years ago, would be sent to a spot near the fourth planet of the system.

It would be transported on an old Valiant-class starship, one of many that was handed over to Wright as a delivery ship. Unlike the Detector, which was to be manned by a skeletal crew, these Valiants would be controlled remotely from a ship stationed on the outside of the system just as this test device was controlled remotely from the Descartes.

Both the Valiants and control ships would be cloaked.

"The function of the device is simple," Wright had explained to Admiral Leland Jefferson, who was overseeing the test for starfleet. "When the TechEx is activated, it will fire a burst that will fry any and all energy-related technologies within a Sol-like star system permanently. It will go down to as deep as 100 kilometers, so caves and mines will not protect anything. After that, with the help of a tachyon field, any ships attempting to enter that system will find their ships power quickly drained, those those effects will be temporary. That is until the field dissipates."

"How long will the tachyon field last?" Jefferson asked.

"With the work of Commander Rodgers these past couple of weeks, we have managed to get the time down to four months."

"Why the tachyon field in the first place?" Jefferson asked.

"That's half of the usefulness of the weapon. Without it, the weapon itself would be a complete waste of time. We need a star system to be without any sort of power for a certain length of time. Without it, the Rommies could easily resupply these systems with working weapon platforms, replicators and such."

"It sends a very powerful message to the Romulans," Jefferson thought out loud.

Wright nodded, "I can convert one of these weapons without the tachyon emitters, but it was made very clear to me that they stay. The good thing is that we have gotten the casualty rate down to 15 to 35 percent. It determines how much food stuffs the Romulans have stored. These days, with replicators, emergency rations are all that most planets have on hand. Even farms will be affected since old-fashioned hand tools are rarely used on most so-called advanced worlds."

Jefferson shook his head. He had only learned about this weapon a month or so ago from Janeway. She wanted him here to make certain everything went off without a hitch.

The cloaked Valiant-class ship, at one time called the Joust, made its way into the Columbia system. Jefferson had assigned Commander T'Jal of the Corps of Engineers to oversee preparing the system for the tests. A little over 250 old, outdated ships were scattered throughout the system. Many of which had been acquired from ship graveyards throughout the Federation. Only a handful had been taken from each graveyard in order to avoid suspicion. Target practice was the excuse given since it was common to use these relics for that purpose, even more so since the beginning of the war.

The oldest was a Daedalus-class ship that Jefferson had thought should have been a museum piece instead of a target ship. The old girl had served during the first Earth-Romulan war, so it seemed fitting that she would serve again, in her own way, in this latest conflict with the Rommies.

Among these ships were sensors spread throughout the system sending back readings.

On three of the planets in the system, various everyday devices were placed and activated. Even very powerful generators were in place in deep bunkers.
Everything was a ready as they could make it.

As the Joust and the device approached their final destination, Rick walked up to where Wright, Jefferson and a handful of other starfleet officials and bridge crew stood.

"How long?" Rick asked.

"Five minutes," Wright said.

Rick just stared out of the viewscreen. They wouldn't actually see anything, but Rick didn't care. The calmness of space helped him to relax.

Wright turned to face Rick.

"Commander ... Rick ... I know you oppose this weapon, but I still want to thank you for your help. It was invaluable."

Rick took a deep breath, but didn't move. He was considering resigning from starfleet because of this, but he didn't want Jefferson to overhear it. Despite the lives they may have saved with their recent adjustments, Rick still felt a little sick to his stomach and it wouldn't go away.

Wright went back to his station looking over the readings, deciding to allow Rick this time to himself. In fact, Rick had been quiet during the entire journey from the Janus system ... eerily quiet.

[T-minus one-minute until activation]

The voice of the computer seemed as cold as Rick at the moment, Wright observed.

"Everything checks out," Wright said.

Rick finally walked over to his station.

"I confirm," Rick said. "All systems go."

[T-minus 45 seconds until activation]

"Still no detection of the Valiant by outside sensors," Rick said.

[T-minus 30 seconds until activation]

"All is good. Preparing final sequence," Wright said.

[T-minus 20 seconds until activation]

"Initiating final sequence," Wright said.

[T-minus 15 seconds until activation]

"Sequence engaged. Everything is out of our hands now," Wright said.

[... 8 ... 7 ... 6 ... 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...]

There was nothing dramatic. No earth-shattering kaboom or anything like that. Sensors simply went out microseconds after sending readings back to the Descartes. Everything within the Columbia system was going exactly how Wright had expected. Even when the tachyon field edged ever-so closely to the Descartes, Wright was not concerned. After about 20 minutes, the tachyon field had reached its limit.

"So," Jefferson finally said impatently.

"Just give me a few more minutes, admiral," Wright said.

Wright looked over the readings. It would take months to fully digest and study the data, but Wright saw enough to make his initial diagnosis.

"The test weapon has been successfully deployed."

Jefferson solemnly nodded, "May our children forgive us."

Wright simply agreed even though he and Jefferson were both old enough to have great grandchildren. Meanwhile, Rick quietly walked off the bridge to the privacy of his quarters.

[USS Chimera] SD 240912.03 || JL || CMO + CSEC || Cmdr. Summers + Major Cortez

Herman <herman.oliver@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=/-\= Main Hospital * SB Unity =/-\=

Cortez sat up in his bed staring at the wall in front of him. It was
nearly time for his latest checkup and from what he'd been told by
Natalie, Summers was going to make an appearance herself. 'Good', he
thought. He hadn't really seen her since he woke up and had a few
questions and complaints as it were. Taking a deep breath he
swallowed and shifted in the bed, 'she'd better not be late', he
grumbled to himself irking his head to the side.

The report from Aeran III followed by the conversation with the CMO
had delayed Rangis usual routine so she was later than expected by the
time she arrived in the hospital. {At least I have some 'good' news}
she thought as she made her way towards the side room that Major
Cortez had been occupying for the last three weeks. { That will make a
pleasant change this morning}

Richards head moved to the sound of the door opening and Summers
stepping through it. "Its about damn time", he said moving his body
so that he was sitting up and his legs were draped over the bed with
his feet touching the floor. "I figured you'd bailed once you'd
realized you gave me a faulty pair of lungs".

She paused for the slightest second uncertain whether or not he was
joking. " Good morning to you too." she replied quite brightly. " How
are feeling today?...been doing the exercises?" She picked up the
medpadd from the locker beside his bed and began to read it.

"Yes I've been doing the damn exercises", he answered sharply. "But
it feels like I've got razor blades in my chest every time I try and
do anything more than walk slowly". He stared at Summers as she
looked at the medpadd. "Where the hell have you been anyways, I
haven't seen you for two weeks".

Rangi read to the end of the latest paragraph then looked at him.

"You've missed me...how sweet." she said replacing the padd to its
previous position." despite my non appearance I 'have' been keeping an
eye on you..." she continued. "... you're an interesting case."

Cortez laughed painfully, "And is that your professional opinion
Doctor"?, he said sarcastically.

"Yes actually it is." she said. " We don't have the opportunity to
carry out advanced procedures very often and as you know, you've had
some cutting edge surgery."

"So I was your little guinea pig then", Richard spat out, "Someone you
could experiment on so you could write a few more chapters in your
memoirs...is that it?". He paused for a moment and then completely
changed the subject. "So who is this Stephen guy", he asked looking
straight at Rangi's eyes. It had been a few days since his meeting
with the stranger and couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't
right about him. He figured he'd test Summers reaction to the
question to see if his suspicions were right.

"Not quite a guinea pig." she replied and answered him
seriously."..but your case will indeed be documented and learned
from." She shifted her weight from one foot to the other. " Now that
you mention it, I wanted to ask you about one of your little
excursions.Perhaps you can tell me why your blood test results were
normal in the morning but had an alcohol content three hours later?"

Richard smiled. "Yes, I admit it, you caught me, I drank a gallon of
Romulan Ale....Does this mean your discharging me since I've failed to
follow the rules?", he said smugly.

"Much as I hate to end our meeting like this.." she said "...the answer is yes."

Cortez looked back up at Rangi immediately. "What?", he replied.

"Yes I'm discharging you." she repeated, enjoying catching him off
guard." There will be a few restrictions of course." she added,
immediately curtailing his pleasure." You'll need weekly examinations,
you need to continue to see the physio but I plan to remove all but
three of the implants and then you can return to your quarters." She
gave him a small smile.

Richard was surprised. "So I can report back for duty on my ship
then", he asked as he stood up and pushed his feet into the slippers
waiting by the bed.

"Nooooo..." Rangi replied slowly and when he met her eyes again she
added: " I said Im releasing you from the hospital...back to your
quarters.....its going to be quite a while until you're fit for duty
and even longer before you'll be back on the front line."

Cortez sighed. "Fine", he finally said after a few moments, clearly
disappointed at the prospect of not being able to return to duty.

"It's not so bad is it?" she asked when a second or two had passed. "
You must remember that you've had a massive surgery and things don't
miraculously get to a hundred percent over night. " He didn't look
convinced. " You really have done very well." she said, speaking
truthfully. " Getting this far in so short a time is tremendously
encouraging."

"So how long then", Cortez asked stepping around the bed to a dresser
and opening it.

"Well....difficult to put a time limit on it." she answered inclining
her head as she considered it "...but I'd hazard a guess as light
duties in...say....a couple of weeks?...possibly less."

He pulled out a clean shirt and pants from the dresser. "Light
duties?", he said turning towards Summers. "You mean a desk job". He
shook his head and sighed. "Do you have any other terrible news for
me?".

"Yes, a desk job." She confirmed his suspicion. "You should be fit for
that and then..we'll see how it goes." She stood looking at him as he
closed the door and slung the clothes on the bed. At the back of her
mind was the thought that he wouldn't take this lying down, that he
would find a holodeck and begin a training program of some kind and
yet... The shirt began to slide to the floor. Rangi reached out to
rescue it and held it out to him. "I know its not what you want." she
said.

Cortez smiled and chuckled as he took the clothes from her. "I can't
have what I want", he said stepping away from her and moving towards
the bathroom. "If there isn't anything else, then could you tell
Doctor Natalie that I need a sponge-bath on your way out?", he irked a
smile and glanced back at Summers.

Rangi raised the glimmer of a smile in return. She had, she thought,
effectively crushed him by denying him the chance to return to his
duties. She had known from the outset that a desk job would be worse
than time spent in the Brig for a man like Cortez but there was no
other way for him to go. "I'll do that." she replied.

Richard smiled, "Unless of course you'd like to help me with that?",
he responded stopping short of the entrance to the bath. He enjoyed
catching Summers off guard and waited for her response.

Her eyebrows raised in surprise but a moment later she replied: "We
don't want to get you over excited Major, now do we?"

Cortez laughed at her response and stepped into the bathroom. "Give
the Admiral my regards", he shouted as the door closed.

Rangi left the room and found, hovering near the door way, the nurse
whom Cortez had mentioned. She looked at Rangi enquiringly. " Is
..is..is everything alright ma'am?" she asked. Rangi gave a nod. "
Yes....just give him a few minutes, he's had a bit of a shock."
Natalie looked at the closed at the closed and Rangi stepped away.
(He'll be alright} she told herself...Cortez will always be alright}

[Washington, D.C. - Earth - Sector 001]

"Here it is!" Rojac decreed, pointing by pulling a gloved hand out of his long winter coat. Across the street, on the bottom floor of a quaint little hotel wa the sign for a quaint little pub - it's named
carved and painted in an aged wooden sign, 'the Dubliner'. "It looks just the same as I remember it."

Walters looked out from between the turned up collar of his heavy greatcoat and reindeer fur lined hat.  He looked at the brick built frontage and at the very traditional looking frontage for the pub.

"The same as you remember it?  I take it you've been here before. I know San Francisco is quite a distance from here but was this during your time at Starfleet Academy or before that?"

"Back in my days back at Harvard, I would come down here to meet some friends that went to Georgetown." Rojac said. "I'd leave Union Station, just as we just did, and meet up with them here." The Captain put his hands back in his pockets as the pair crossed the street.

Walters gave a sentimental chuckle.  "Sounds not that far off my youth before joining up."  He took another look at the building before turning back to Rojac.  "So what's the plan?"

Rojac checked his chronometer and sighed. "I told General Sharpe to meet us here." He looked around briefly. "Maybe he's already inside?"

Richard was indeed inside, at the bar, wearing his usual marine uniform with the ribbons and insignia on it. He was nursing a glass of scotch that he'd ordered about fifteen minutes before-hand, just waiting for his colleagues to arrive.

"Well he either meets us inside or not.  It's freezing out here so I say we go in and find a decent table, what say you?"  Walters said placing heavy emphasis on INSIDE.  He waited whilst the Captain made his decision.

The Captain smirked, noticing his XO's discomfort. "Well then, let's go inside."

Walters followed Rojac in and up to the bar.  The barman turned to them and upon seeing the bulky build of Walters decided to take his order first.  Walters couldn't help but smile and say in a slightly Irish accent "Pint o' plain please and whate'er me good man here's havin'."

Rojac brought a hand to his forehead. "Just a whiskey, on ice please."

"Oh god, another Irishman." Richard said, spotting the Starfleet pair. "I swear to god, I'm  surrounded by your irritating kind, with your folksy wisdom and your quaint accent."

"Ah the good General himself, and I see all terted up fer the occasion.  I take it nobody bothered to tell him the meetin' isn't till the morrow mornin."  Walters said.

"Some of us take pride in our uniform, son." Richard said. "Doesn't hurt to set an example."

"Not if yea don't take into account makin yerself a prime target for Rommie assassins, terrorists and yer average run o the mill loony, no...no harm at all."  Walters quipped.

After receiving his drink, Rojac thanked the bartender and walked over to General's table. "Your wife isn't too upset about losing you to duty so soon after the honeymoon is she?"

"Chloe understands that I have a duty to perform." He said. "But she wasn't happy about it, that's for sure."

Rojac smiled. "She'll get over it." He toog a long swig from his glass, reducing it's contents down to a half an inch of liquid. "Well, welcome to D.C. gentlemen." Rojac said. "Our shuttle doesn't
leave for San Francisco until 1100 tomorrow, so we have all night to haunt my old stomping grounds." He took a swig from his glass, "Any requests?"

Neither responded.

"Well then," Rojac said, holding up his glass, "drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die!"

[USS Chimera] SD: 240912.01 || Unity || Duty Log || Cmdr. Rangi Summers ||

Darrell Smith <erassianalliance@googlemail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

*** Med. Advisors Office. * SB Unity ***

Rangi was staring at a patch of carpet about three inches
left and two inches forward of the leg of a chair. The chair
itself was part of the seating plan at the far end of her
office, a soft and comfortable thing for visitors in
informal discussion. It was vacant at that time and there
was nothing on the carpet that demanded such unbroken
attention.
It was merely that her eyes had settled there as she had
sunk into deep thought.
Open on knee was a padd detailing a medical report and her
fingers, laying lightly across it, had ceased to beat a
rhythm as the thoughts had grown, tapping now only
intermittently.
The report was from the Chief Medical Officer on Aeran III
and from his point of view, the news was interesting but he
would have been surprised to see the effect his report had
had on the Medical Advisor when she had read it.
It told of a hitherto unknown illness which had come to
light only because a doctor had been called to the small
settlement on another matter.
The hamlet, for it was hardly large enough to be called a
settlement, consisted of little more than a dozen homes. It
was situated in a remote part of the Northern Plateau, an
inhospitable place at the best of times, where a mine had
been drilled. An accident there had necessitated the doctors
attendance and whilst there he had noticed that a number of
the miners had what he had supposed at first sight to be
tattoos on their bodies.
Enquiring into the fact, he had learned that the men had
experienced a mild illness a week or so before. They hadnt
called for medical aid because none had been unduly ill and
none had felt the need to involve a medic, experiencing
nothing worse than mild symptoms of headaches, sore
throats, and in a few cases, a certain amount of lethergy
for a day or so.The dark patterns on their skins had emerged
as the illness disappeared.
The doctor had noted that the lines resembled a map of
their circulatory system but he could find no cause for
them.
He had examined all the miners affected with this strange
pattening but had found them all to be in perfect health. His
report had gone to first to Aerans CMO and in time, to
Rangi.

She didnt like it and the unsettled feelings she had
experienced before, returned with a vengance.
It was all too much of a coincidence but try as she might,
she couldnt find a link.
The Breen hostages had been the first and all of them had
died. next had come the three crewmen from the Scavenger and
wayfarer. The worrying thing about them had been that they
had worked at the medical research centre but although they
had been ill, they had all recovered.
Light years away two other instances had occurred, one on
Alpha Leonis and the other on Aurelia Prime.
{A coincidence?} Rangi shook her head slightly. There was
nothing to link them together but the Ferengi ship Me-Vetra
had taken on board wine from one of the planets.
Rangi had seen it on the Inter Galactic News channel
where the reporter had explained the
diplomatic incident whereby the Ferengi had accused the
Federation of selling substandard goods at inflated prices.
The captain had gone so far as to mention attempted poison,
a totally unjustified accusation but her attention had
fixated when the Captian in question had appeared on the
screen covered in dark lines.
The next day she had read the reports on all these cases
which had been waiting on her desk.
Now the same thing was happening very close to home. SB
Unity was a metaphorical 'stones throw' from Aeran III.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sudden 'trilling' of
her desktop terminal, indicating an incoming call. She stood
from her place and walked quickly to her desk.

The spinning logo of the Aeran III Colony was quickly
replaced with the slightly worried looking face of a grey haired human
aged in about his sixties. "Ah Commander Summers I presume. My name is Nicolas
Sturgeon, the Chief Administrator of the Aeran III Colony.
I am calling you direct due to an unsettling 'potential viral
outbreak' situation in a small hamlet called Greensburgh in the
northern hemisphere. Our main medical staff have been investigating this
incident are unable to identify the pathogen, its means of
transmission or its origin."

"Given your recent willingness help with
our flu epidemic it is a hard thing to bother you with yet
another request for help but this may be more than meets the eye.
My Chief Medical Officer has confirmed that the pathogen whatever it
is, is most definitely alien in origin. Given the proliferation of
Romulan Bio-weapons in this region I request Unity provide a helping
hand with it's medical expertise."

Rangi had taken her seat and listened attentively to all
Nicholas had to say.

"Ofcourse we will help." she replied. " Actually, I've just
been reading the report from the CMO. Tell me...have there
been any other cases?"

"I wouldn't say other cases as in previous but initial
reports are coming in from a town about 15 miles from Greenburgh. The
symptoms seem to be the same. As such we've instigated a quarantine
order but local enforcement are too few in number and ill equipped for
such a task. Though it pains me to ask we may have to rely on
Unity for support in this aspect too." He said solemnly.

Rangi frowned then after a second, nodded too.
" I'll speak to Admiral Guzman about it." she said. It was
obvious she was going to add something yet held back.
Mr Sturgeon.." she began ". I dont want to cause alarm but
I'm concerned about this. I'm going to request a further
quarantine than you one you suggest. It will be for Aeran
itself."

"No" He replied. "I'm willing to expand the parameters of
the quarantine up to a thousand miles but a full scale planetary
quarantine is out of the question. No offence but quite
often it seems that a planetary quarantine is the Federation's cue to
pull back to a safe distance and leave well enough alone. We haven't
forgotten what happened to our trading partners on Charos VI when they
were crying out for aid. We helped relay both official Alliance
and civilian requests for medical aide to the Federation High
Command which fell on deaf ears. I will not allow this colony to
suffer the same fate."

" Mr Sturgeon...with respect....you dont understand." Rangi
said quietly. "There is no cause to think we're pulling back...obviously
not if I'm willing to send help to you." she said in a
reasonable tone. " It's just that there might indeed be more
to this than you think and you must see that with the amount
of through traffic that Unity has, I must do all I can to
limit any cross infection."

"A thousand mile radius is more than sufficient for
containment of the virus. Transport systems are already suspended within the
affected zone and extensive screenings are taking place within the
existing quarantine zone. We're doing more than could or SHOULD be
asked of us. Besides the final decision for enforcement of a
planetary quarantine would lie with Admiral Guzman."

" You're correct of course." she replied. " The Admiral will
have the final say....I can only request it."

"A planetary quarantine would be hugely damaging to the
planetary and regional economy and incite mass hysteria amongst the
populace. The death toll caused by the panic could exceed that of the
virus." Said Chief Administrator Sturgeon.

Rangi knew it was pointless to argue for he had valid points
and there would be a need to weigh each side against the
other. She could only press her side when the time came.

" I think you may be over estimating the possible reaction."
Rangi replied "...but you can of course put your concerns to
the Admiral."
