[USS Chimera] SD 240901.31 Duty Log: Commander Rangi Summers CMO

*** CMOs Office * USS Chimera -C ***

Rangi returned to her office after the meeting with Athena, determined to raise the subject of discipline with the Captain.
It didn't take long to compose the message:

"Sir.
Following your orders at the Senior Staff Meeting regarding discipline on board and also at a private meeting with the XO in which we discussed the same subject, I reviewed the working situation in my department.

I understand your concerns and agree that, particularly in our current situation, rules and regulations are of the utmost importance.

However, I consider morale to have a high priority too and have to conclude that the level has fallen in all areas of Sickbay.
My senior AMO, Doctor Fisher, had also noticed this as has the Senior Counsellor Commander Wellington, with whom I discussed the subject today.

After some thought I have concluded that the medical teams need to have the easy interaction with each other that softening of Regulations provides.

I feel that due to their often stressful duties, the camaraderie that existed between my teams is not only beneficial but also essential to their work and should be encouraged and not the reverse.

I realize that being on first name terms might infringe accepted rules in some cases but I feel that friendships formed over time aid the cooperation between all of my teams be they technician, nursing or medical staff  and is essential to aid their highest perfomance level.

I am, ofcourse, fully prepared to accept the failing of any of my teams actions as my own responsibility.

I ask that my department be allowed to resume the former levels of interaction between the ranks."

She read over the message and had signed her name and position at the end when Red Alert suddenly sounded. She glanced quickly towards the door where the red lights were flashing and the medteams were hurrying to their emergency positions.
Rangi returned her attention to the message, added 'Low Priority' to the heading and sent it for attention of the Captain, knowing that it would now indeed be low on his list of concerns.

She hastily got to her feet and leaving her office, hurried towards the main sickbay.

*** Chief Counselor's Office * USS Chimera-C ***

Rangi had received Athena's message earlier in the afternoon
and decided to pay the Counselor a visit on the off chance
that she would have time free to talk. Scott's words of the
previous evening had touched a sore point and, it seemed,
others had noticed too. She arrived at the door, paused a
second, then sounded the
chime.

Athena looked up like she could see through the door and
then shrugged, "Come in."

"I hope I'm not disturbing you...." Rangi said ".... I
should have made an appointment." The door slid shut quietly
behind her. " I received your message and wouldn't mind
hearing your thoughts." She had walked
forward as she spoke and now stood near to the counselor.

Athena motioned to a seat in the more comfortable setting of
the chairs instead of  those by her desk.  "I have plenty of
time at the moment... although you aren't the first one from
medical to just stop in.  Would
you like some water or juice," Athena offered.

"Juice please...pineapple would be nice."  She looked at the
chairs and chose the nearest to herself, taking a seat and
setting her bag down beside her feet.  She waited until
Athena returned with the drinks, not asking who else had
visited, knowing that it wasn't her business.  "I was
talking to Scott last night.." she said as Athena
approached.  "He mentioned a change in sickbay...you noticed
it too it seems."

Setting the glasses down and taking a seat herself she said,
"I felt it... it just feels different.  I would only be able
to  detect it like that if it were ... a shift in morale."

Rangi's expression became resigned. "Exactly...that's what
Scott said suggested." She looked across at Athena. " I'm
not surprised because I'm aware of it as well. There is a
reason but I think I've taken things
too far." She took a tentative sip from her glass, expecting
the juice to be sour but it was, in fact sweet.

"Please don't take this the wrong way... but is it anything
that would have a simple med tech comparing you to a baby
Hitler?"  Athena looked sympathetic as she took a drink of
water.

Rangi couldn't hide her surprise then she gave a weak smile
and shook her head.  "No, not really..it wouldn't." she
replied.

Athena gave a smile, "I don't think that was the exact
phrasing and I assumed there was some exaggeration... "

"I've been tightening up on rules and regulations." Rangi
explained.  "Its worked in so much as everything is running
perfectly...except..." she paused "..well..it was before
really.  The captain and XO have made it clear they want
less familiarity between crew members..more professionalism.
I see their point, but 'my'
department has lost something that it needs. Is that what
you felt?" Rangi asked her question looking directly at
Athena and expecting an honest reply.

Athena closed her eyes thought for a couple of moments and
then meeting Rangi's eyes replied, "Yes... but are you sure
that's what they meant?   I mean with you sick and I'm Sure
Shane put plenty of pressure on Scott that .... well .. I'm
sure a couple of things just weren't delegated as they
normally would .. and so much of the crew seems to be new...
and Young."

"Perhaps that has something to do with it." Rangi said
considering it.  "..But it hit home when the captain
criticized the medical department. It's true it was left
without a CMO for a while and my own arrival was very near
the time of departure...but that can't be used as an excuse.
Scott said that the 'fun' is missing. I know what he means.
Its not as though things were taken lightly but we 'did'
have easy going and friendly familiar feel to the place.
Tightening up has lost a lot of that."

"How effective will everyone continue to be if they feel
that a mistake can't be made and if made can't be talked
about..?"

"Less so." Rangi replied. "I need to redress the
situation...and soon." She smiled weakly and changed the
subject. " How are you Athena?" she asked.

I'm good and I'm glad I thought right in sending you a
personal message first," Athena smiled at the other woman.

"Has your memory become much clearer?" Rangi asked wondering
if clues or prompts of outright information would help.

Athena thought about earlier the flash of a memory when she
looked at the beach picture and replied, "I seem to remember
knew things when I least expect it.... but I think almost
everything is back..," she paused.  Her gaze went to the
beach scene picture above the sofa as her brow furrowed and
asked, "Have I forgotten something that I was supposed to
do?"

"Not as far as I know..." Rangi replied, looking towards the
picture too. "That's very nice...is it somewhere in
particular?" she asked.

"No .. it just reminds me of some place I've been...with
someone..." Athena answered picking up her glass of water
and taking a drink.  {Someone important...}

Rangi sipped from her glass, watching Athena as she did
so.It was difficult 'not' to tell her everything, so after a
few moments she said: " How's Viktor?"

Athena seemed to think before she said anything but finally
replied, "Fine."  Her heart beat a bit faster but she was
glad that her manner remained calm and cool despite her
seemingly conflicting thoughts.

"Athena..I don't know exactly what you remember..either from
the recent past or from times further away. I don't know,
for example, what you recall about the friendship between
us. "
She paused, wondering how to phrase it all.
"If you want..." she said slowly "...I might be able to
answer questions or to explain things more clearly. I know
it's best if your memory returns naturally but it must be
extremely difficult for you living like this. If you want me
to help you then you have only to ask."  She placed her half
empty glass onto the table and waited to see what reaction,
if any, her words might provoke.

"AS far as you and I go we had a very good relationship
until you became jealous of me even though Shane is and was
then totally besotted with you and I don't think my choice
in men has help although we've managed to over come as the
jealous was intensified by a mission with some plant as the
culprit," Athena retold quickly in her unusual flair in
stating things.  She took another sip of water and set her
glass on the stand as well.  "The only thing that is a bit
troubling is ... never mind... I think I should just figure
it out."

Rangi gave a short nod. "As you wish." she said "..but the
offer is always there."
She stood up. "Thanks for your input. I'll act on it."

"I will ... I hope what I said helps... I am always
available for input as well if you find you need help,"
Athena countered and walked Rangi to the door.

The fighters cleared the launch bays quickly with the Lancerss leading the
charge towards the Romulan Fighters.  From the information flowing through
the datalink Anya could see that this was a new class of Romulan fighter
loaded with heavy weaponry like a heavy disruptor and plasma micro-torpedoes.
A Heavy Assault Fighter more useful against capital ships than fighters, still a
direct blast from one of them could prove to be dangerous for the Lancers.

Anya formed a plan of action quickly and transmitted on the unit frequency.
"Ok folks here's the plan Ghost Flight cloak and start tailing that starboard
Warbird but do not engage until ordered.  Sun God keep up the datalink but
avoid combat.  Lancers I want a full missile barrage once we enter effective
range to thin out the opposition we're facing two squadrons of a previously
unseen fighter.  Once that's done break by flights and head to your assigned
combat zones.  Remember your speed and agility is your best weapon in this
fight."

A tone indicated that the Lancers had entered firing range for missile launch
and a counter was displayed indicating a countdown to launch.  The counter
ticked down to zero and 192 Quantum Warhead tipped missiles streaked out
towards the 24 Romulan Heavy Assault Fighters with terrifying speed.  The
Romulan fighters began evasive manoeuvres and managed to shake off a
few of the missiles but they couldn't stop them all.

The missiles clustered in on the Romulan Heavy Assault Fighters and detonated
spectacularly destroying 17 of the enemy in an instant only leaving 7 damaged
survivors "Break by flights!" Anya called over the comms.  Simultaneously her
flight hammered on the afterburners accelerating the fighters up to close to
light speed.  Suddenly it had gone from a long-range duel to close range dogfight.
After the initial barrage the Romulans were left disoriented and the Lancers fell upon
them like a pack of wolves upon a flock of sheep carving them up with pulse phasers
and Quantum Gattling Cannons sending out streams of Quantum Tipped Rounds.

Anya rolled her fighter into a corkscrew manoeuvre coming in to unleash a barrage
of her four Gattling Cannons upon the last remaining Romulan Heavy Assault Fighter
shredding it into a burning ball of fire and metal shards.  "Alright Lancers, form up.
Next target is the big one, the Warbird."

[Bridge - Deck 1 - USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]

Rojac checked his chronometer for his seat. The time had come. He
leaned over toward his executive officer and addressed her loud enough
for the rest of the bridge to hear. "Commander Trzetrzelewska, what is
our status?"

"We are at our point of destination," Natalia replied from her seat.
"All systems are functioning within expected parameters; medical and
security teams are standing by."

"Very well then." Rojac stated. "What are we waiting for? Lieutenant
Howard, take us to Red Alert. Lieutenant Reese, all hands to battle
stations. Away team to designated transporter rooms and damage control
teams on stand-by."

"Aye Sir," Michael said as he punched a few buttons on his tactical
console. The klaxons sounded and the lighting took on the distinctive
red tint that meant danger was imminent.

Reese made the call for all hands to battle stations and checked with
the security teams to make sure they were ready, "Captain everyone is
ready." Jade said typing a few buttons to increase sensor range output
so they wouldn't be surprised by anything.

"Lieutenant Howard, what is the status of our cloak?" Rojac asked.

Michael pulled up the status and gave it a quick look over. "The cloak
is fully operational captain," he said.

"Lieutenant Reese, what is the status of the integrated transporter
program?" Natalia asked the Chief Ops.

"The program is up and running." Jade said waiting for the signal to
activate it and have the transporter room chief transport the security
teams.

"Helm." Rojac called to the blond female bajoran at the controls.

"Set course for wave one."

"Course already set, Captain." She replied over her shoulder. "Waiting
for your command."

Rojac looked over to Natalia for a confirming nod before he turned
back to the view screen to reply. "Take us in."

The Lieutenant slid her slender hands along the impulse controls,
bring the ship into full impulse along it's trajectory. Immediately,

Rojac's armrest display calculated ETAs and different ranges for the
preprogrammed and preplanned aspects of wave one.

"Approaching transporter range." The Lieutenant at helm reported.
Tension was thick on the bridge, as if everyone was holding their
breath. "Within range."

Rojac saw Natalia getting ready to issue the order for the
transportation of the away team, but he held out a hand to halt her
progress. "No. Wait a moment." He said quietly, keeping her eyes glued
to the view screen. "There's a chance our guests will pick up our
transporter signal. I want to keep the element of surprise."

"Let's hope they don't know we're here already," Natalia replied somberly.

"Fifteen seconds to Outpost 0071." The Lieutenant reported. "Now or never, sir."

Rojac gave a nod to Natalia.

"Energize," Natalia ordered and waited with baited breath to hear whether or not they'd been transported successfully.

Jade had the transporter Chief re-route transporter control of the
three transporter rooms to her station so she could load the program
and make sure everything worked. It took her to get all three
transporters synced up before she ran one last quick diagnostic.
Seconds later she had confirmation that all three teams made it over
safely.

"All teams made it Captain." Jade said after double checking everything.

Rojac let out a sigh of relief, and the tension lightened for a few
moments. But this was only part one. It did not matter however, the
brief repose was quickly ended with a sudden announcement from
tactical.

"Sir, we've got two warbirds decloaking starboard!"

"Phase two." Rojac said calmly from his chair.

"Helm, evasive maneuver Epsilon Bravo," Natalia said order and in the
same action tapped her commbadge. "Trzetrzelewska to Xerxes; you are
cleared for take off." Standing up from her seat she moved to Auxiliary
Tactical control station. "Mr Howard, prepare all weapons. Disabling
cloaking device in 3... 2... 1."

"Target the port vessel." Rojac ordered, taking to his feet. "Fire at will."

Liev stopped in front of a door and opened it, ushering the delegation into the private, luxurious waiting room that was reserved on the docking ring for VIPs and diplomats.

"So I hear the Empire's warriors are too busy squabbling amongst each other to have fun with a good fight.  Any comment Envoy Kaj?  Can't have the part time soldiers in the Federation getting all the glory now."  Alecto said stepping through the door.

"I prefer not to discuss politics on an empty stomach, Ambassador," Kaj said firmly to the Erassian Ambassador. "What say you about some gagh?"

"Depends on how lively it is."  Alecto answered with a grin.

Just before Lernen entered the room, Adjur stepped forward to him and said "I believe you helped our strategist for the Klingon beachhead invasion to retake Betazed during the Dominion Occupation.  That was my grandfather Cho'zac.  I believe human tradition is that a handshake is a show of honour, may I?" Adjur held out her hand to Lernen.

Lernen reached up "I remember Cho'zac.  He was a fine warrior and a brilliant strategist.  I was sorry to hear he died in the raid on Horunus."

Adjur replied "Don't be it was a glorious death with much honour.  Unfortunately the same cannot be said for yours."

Lernen's eyes widened and he began to convulse violently, so violently in fact that he was jolted out of his chair and onto the floor.

Alecto didn't hesitate for a millisecond as she turned unsheathed her jet black katana and dropped into a crouching position.  Using most of her enhanced strength she launched herself upwards and back out through the door into Adjur lifting her off the ground.  In midair Alecto drove the katana through Adjur's torso and into the bulkhead behind leaving Adjur nailed to the wall over a foot off the ground.  She caught a sharp look of distaste off Major Liev but all she said was "Non-vital area. She still lives." Before casting a warning glance at the other Klingon Envoys.

Mnemosyme grabbed her phaser from the holster at her side.  Bringing up the rear her view of what was happening was no the best but the crowd parted as a Klingon and the Ambassador traveled into the corridor.

Quickly Rushing forward as Nym holstered her phaser, she dropped to her knees by Harbright and began checking his pulse.  She could tell by the feel of him that things were not right and she couldn't help the glowing tingling that started at her finger tips.

Alecto was cautiously examining the hand of Adjur that Lernen had shook.  "Transdermal poison patch, haven't seen one of those in a while.  Atypical method for a Klingon really.  Major Varis would you take the other security escorts and the Envoys into the lounge so Lieutenant Nyx has some room to work and call for the medics if you would be so kind."  The words may have been polite but the tone and body posture of the Hybrid Assassin left no room for argument.

Nym could hear the others around her and even knew that someone had asked her a question, but she couldn't discern what it was.  {There so much damage already.... }  She shut her thoughts down and quickly pulled her arm away.

After the door shut behind Major Varis and the others, Alecto turned to
Mnemosyme and said "If you're going to use it then nows the time. And before you say it I won't believe you that glowing fingers are there to make it easier to read at night.  Don't worry I don't care about revealing your little gift so don't hesitate because of me."

"I'm trusting your word that you will say nothing."  Nym didn't say anything else as she didn't feel there was time.   She placed both hands on Lernen's chest and looked at Alecto, "You mustn't let any one else know or see."  The look in her eyes became distant and a small glow started that made her fingers look like they had been dipped in glitter.

"vam 'oH qab!" Kaj was shouting in outrage as Liev quickly led them and the marine guards away from the scene and into the lounge.

The door had barely slid shut behind them when Ch'tarig grabbed Liev by the throat and fumed, "ja' jIH qatlh!"

Liev had barely time to register what had happened when two of the marines grabbed and sedated Ch'tarig while the two other each placed a firm grip on the Envoy's shoulders. Kaj didn't resist, but he was clearly boiling with anger. Though whether it was at what his aide had done or what the Erassian Ambassador had done was uncertain.

"Call a medic!" Liev croaked as he rubbed his bruised larynx.

With her eyes glistening like some kind of violet jewel, Nym looked down into the man's face and suddenly pulled her hands away and sagged against the wall.

Lernen's breathing was ragged "No....save it....for someone who...needs it.  You must....you must tell...Lady Tanavia.  They...are moving...quicker than we expected.  The...Spearhead...must be sharpened."

Alecto crouched next to him and benignly said "Any last regrets to confess old man?"

Lernen gave a sort of laugh which came out more as a cough "I'm sorry....I never...told my son how...how very proud...I was that.....he was...his own man."  With that a single tear rolled down the withered face of Lernen Harbright. He gasped in pain and convulsed as little black lines looking almost like the growing of tree branches crawled up from beneath the collar of his uniform and onto his face.  The tension suddenly released from his body and he slumped to the deck.

Alecto rose and said to Mnemosyme "Times up.  Have the medics move the body to the morgue full quarantine procedures.  Do not under any circumstances let them transport it."  Alecto turned and started to walk off in the direction of the promenade.

Nym, sat propped up by the wall behind her, she nodded indicating she had heard the ambassadors orders.  She closed her eyes as she heard the thunder of feet growing closer and meditated for a minute or two.  {Pull it together now; rest later} she told herself as she opened her eyes and pressed her body against the wall and used it as the needed leverage to get back on her feet.

Without turning back Alecto answered simply. "I'm going for a drink."

Alecto stood looking bored for all intents and purposes not paying attention to what was going on around her.  It wasn't true though assassins never really switched off to what was going on around them and of Hybrid assassins that was especially true.  Every slightest movement and gesture was noticed and analysed making reading people into an art form.  The Task Force's Intelligence Advisor Commander Lernen Harbright looked unhappy about being dragged away from his work to preside over the meet and greet for the advance party of envoys from the Klingon Empire before the Ambassador himself would arrive.  The counselor who had offered to help her a few weeks ago was there as well as was a number of other personnel from the Task Force.

Lernen sat in his chair waiting impatiently as the Klingon Envoys disembarked their ship and made their way towards the waiting welcome party.  The pain in his legs was coursing through his body and the painkillers he was on did little to hold back the tide of pain.  Lernen understood well that this initial meeting was important but was unlikely to determine if the Klingons would enter the war on their side.  There had been disturbing rumours of cooperation with the Romulans and internal conflict within the Klingon Empire was rising to the dangerous point of innevitable civil war and this time Starfleet was not in a position to help.

 Mnemosyme watched the disembarking as well as those around her.  As she looked at the posture of the Erassion ambassador all that came to mind was {Stiff, calm politician ... or trained killer?}.  She flicked her attention to the Klingons before continuing with her train of thought.  {If I had to bet it would be the latter.}  Another quick check toward the party approaching and then back to those around her.  {His scowl always seems to indicate pain... I wonder if he ever finds relief.... I wonder if I should help?}

Major Varis Liev looked around at the gathered people in the reception area of the docking bay, waiting for the Klingon delegates to arrive. The Klingons had only sent an Envoy and not a full-bar ambassador, which Liev found rather strange, and their arrival was somewhat unannounced... but that wasn't necessarily a strange thing for Klingons; they tended to do things in their own time, whether it be sooner or later. He watched carefully as three large, imposing Klingons proceeded down the corridor towards them, escorted by four marines. They looked more irritable than usual, no doubt from having to wait before they could as their ship hadn't received the proper clearance as well as the personal security check to make sure they weren't carrying anything untoward.

The three Klingons came to a stop before the assembled group and the tall man in front slammed his fist against his chest. "nuqneH!" he said loudly in greeting.

"nuqneH!" the gathered Starfleet Officers said in return.  The thought occurred to Lernen that perhaps the group chosen to meet the Klingon Envoys may not have been ideal...an old cripple, a lawyer and a counselor.  It would probably turn out that the person who would be on the best terms with the Envoys would be that murderous psychopath from the Alliance.

"I am Kaj of the House of Qua'lon," the envoy introduced himself in a strong voice. "These are my aides; Adjur, daughter of the House of K'tar and Ch'tarig, son of the House of Badich."

Lernen led the introductions "I am Commander Lernen Harbright the First Task Force Intelligence Advisor, this is Major Varis Liev from the Judge Advocate Generals Office, this is Second Lieutenant Mnemosyme Nyx who will be guiding you to your quarters and this..."

"I am Ambassador Alecto Ayanami of the Erassian Alliance and Royal Assassin of the Hybrid Royal Court."  Alecto interrupted Lernen well aware of what his opinion was of her and how he would introduce her as if she was a bit part.

{Well, that's an introduction to make anyone feel welcomed.}  Mnemosyme met each Klingons gaze during the introductions that almost seemed to be more of a sizing up of each other instead.

"Commander," Kaj inclined his head stiffly towards the Starfleet officers. "Ambassador," he said, eyeing Alecto somewhat suspiciously. His aides just remained quiet and imposing, not moving.

"Please follow us this way," Liev said after the greetings. "I'll show you to the waiting rooms; Starfleet personnel will be helping showing you to your quarters shortly." He started down the corridor, followed by the rest of the delegation.

"Why the need for so much security," Kaj asked Harbright.

"Just a precaution really in case the Romulan Star Empire decides to send another fleet to pop in for tea and crumpets again."  Lernen answered in a deadpan fashion.

In the quiet that followed, Nym felt edgy it made her want to put her hand protectively on the phaser that almost always hung at her side.  With a little mental coaching though her arm stayed comfortable hang at her side.

"You could always proclaiming pacifism again.  It's what the Federation is good at and it's worked out well so far." Alecto said with an obvious trace of sarcasm in her voice.

There was a second of uncomfortable silence before Kaj burst out in hearty laughter and for a moment everyone was confused as to why. It continued for a few seconds and then died down; everyone was quiet waiting to see what would happen next.

Lernen shook his head almost immeasurably typical of the Hybrid really and really of any Erassian Diplomat.  Hell the Alliance split from the Federation in the first place because they weren't overly fond of pursuing peace in the face of ongoing aggression from the Romulans and Klingons.

Liev stopped in front of a door and opened it, ushering the delegation into the private, luxurious waiting room that was reserved on the docking ring for VIPs and diplomats.

Athena sat at her desk thinking about the walk she had just taken through sickbay.  {It felt odd... seemed wrong in some way.}  She looked at the picture on the wall as thoughts flitted through her head.  {Understaffed.... maybe.... but not it.  Over worked.... no not busy enough for that ... at least not yet.}  She drummed her fingers on the desk as she continued to stare at the picture.  {Unorganized... no.... things seemed to be running smoothly.  Inefficient.... no not with Rangi in charge.}

Something in her next thought rang true and She decided to send a note to Rangi and hoped it would end there.  It also explained why she had a couple of med technicians come in early for evaluations, or so  they tried.

Rangi,

As I was walking through the main sickbay, after visiting with a patient there, I noticed that the morale in your department felt off.  Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Athena

She sent the quick note off and hoped that everything was fine.  If it didn't seem to correct itself she would have to take more drastic measures.  As she looked back up to the beach scene in the picture; a flash of a memory flitted through her mind.  She shrugged it off and continued to work her way through the messages that had been left for her earlier that day.

*** Sickbay * USS Chimera-C ***

After the unusual conversation with Vlimar PontBrillant,
Lucy set to work immediately to discover why the last three
reports had not arrived at their destination. She was very
aware that Rangi would not be at all pleased to learn about
it and wanted an answer, so that by the time the Captain was
informed, the solution would already be underway.

She soon tracked down the missing reports and read through
them. None were very long, for sickbay had been very quiet,
almost, she thought, like the lull before the storm.
All the reports had all been completed and signed off at the
appropriate time on each shift so it seemed that the problem
didnt lie in sickbay but rather somewhere else.

She contacted Ops and explained the problem to the very
helpful Ensign who answered her. He would look into it, he
assured her, and let her know as soon as he had a result.
She thanked him.

Sickbay remained very quiet.
It was not an unknown scenario and although in one way it
was good, for a quiet sickbay equalled a healthy crew, it
could on the other hand become a little boring.
Lucy preferred to be busy so spent the next half an hour
checking everything that needed to be checked, scrolled
through the next few rotas and contacted Judy Sismey, the
nurse whose shift she was covering.
Judy had had a tummy upset but was already feeling alot
better and told Lucy she would be fit for her next shift.

Someone came in complaining of toothache. Lucy referred her
to Dr Mitchelson.
The hour ticked by.

Lucy reviewed the stock list ..again... then spent some time
reading about the prosthetic arm recently provided for
Gustav Kroitzer. It was interesting but Lucys thoughts
began to stray.

{....Please ensure that I receive daily reports of your
status... }
Lucy smiled to herself remembering again the mans expression
and his obvious embarrassment as he'd tried to cover his
slip of the tongue.
{ I mean your Sickbay's status} he'd added hastily.
Her smile widened. It wasn't often a Colonel was confused
and she felt a bit sorry for him because he must be annoyed
with himself to have appeared so foolish in front of a crew
member.
She propped her elbow on the desk and rested her chin onto
her upraised palm.

{ ...Who are you, anyway?...}
She heard his voice ask the question and idly thought what a
pleasant voice it had been...soft.. yet strong.

She sat up suddenly and shook her head, telling herself not
to be so silly but the thoughts remained not far away.
The crewman with the toothache checked out. Lucy read the
notes from Dr Mitchelson. { UR6..mmm...} She closed the
notes and sighed as the logo returned to the screen. Before
long her chin was resting in her palm as before.

{...I'm.... Lieutenant Fleming Sir..Lucy Fleming...I'm the
head nurse....}
Lucy frowned, hearing her own words echo in her mind.
{Why did I say that!?} she asked herself { Why didnt I just
say ' I'm the head nurse here. Fleming.}
The logo turned slowly on its axis
{ He almost said 'Lucy 'afterwards but changed it to
'Lieutenant'.......ohdon't be so ridiculous!!...you're
thinking like a lovestruck teenager...pull yourself
together!}

She sat up again, eased her collar, smoothed a crinkle away
from her tunic and ran a hand over her hair.

{ Actuallyyyyyyyy.....} she thought eyeing the screen in
front of her then glancing around to check if anyone was
nearby, {..I dont know 'definately' who he is do I?....and
if Rangi wants to know who queried the fault then she'll
expect a name, not just a rank..'some lieutenant
colonel'..well...how can I say that? Best look him up!}

She justified herself speedily enough and it wasnt difficult
to locate the Executive Officer of SB 234

{Vlimar PontBrillant... }
Lucy tilted her head to one side but despite learning his
name, she scrolled on down the biography.
{Age...45...oh!!}

She blinked at the number
{ Well...he doesnt look it.} she thought, remembering the
dark hair with a tinge of grey here and there. {...anyway,
grey is distinguished} she told herself already moving on to
the next line.
{ Birth place ..Earth...ok....marital
status............married....}

She stared at the screen and felt a split second of
disappointment, then scrolled on.
{ Service Record...classified.....what all of
it?....ohh..yes.. all of it.....Medical records
then........classified...}
It was not usual for an entire medical record to be locked
if the person in question held a high rank, particularly in
SSF.
Lucy scrolled on to Commendations. There were a few
standard ribbons but then...
{Classified?....}
She frowned.

"So what have you found that's making you frown?"
She looked up startled by the sudden voice.

" Oh..nothing.." she said smiling at Scott as her finger
pressed the button to close the data.
He peered over the top to look at it but saw only the
swivelling logo.
"Apparantly the reports haven't been getting through to
Unity." she said " I've notified Ops and they will look into
it."
Now it was Scott who frowned.
" That's not good." he said " Rangi wont like the department
to appear lax with reports if the Captain mentions them."

"That's exactly what I thought too." Lucy said "..thats why
it's all in hand already." She gave Scott a smug grin and he
laughed.

" My dear aunt Lucy.." he said "..I wouldnt expect anything
less from you...."

Walking onto the bridge Jade looked around to see if the XO or CO was
on the bridge she didn't see the CO, but she did see the XO walking
down onto the lower part of the bridge where the helm, CO and XO
chairs were. "Commander." Jade said stepping closer to the XO.

"Lieutenant," Natalia greeted the Chief Ops as she looked up from the
padd she was reading. "What can I do for you?"

"I just wanted to show you the program we're going to be using to get
the security teams onto the outpost." Jade said handing the XO the
PADD with the program on it.

"Thank you," she said as she took the padd from Jade and looked
through it. "This looks very promising, Lieutenant Reese. How were the
results in the simulations?"

"Everything went smoothly, but there could be a problem if we've to an
emergency beam out. Mainly because if there is an operative on the
outpost that person can change the timing on the shielding and it'll
take to long to figure out what timing it switched to." Jade said with
a worried look.

"Do you have any suggestions for getting around that?" Natalia asked.
She had an idea of her own in mind, but it could only be used as a
last resort.

"But there might be a way around that." Jade said just thinking of it
on the spot. "We could put in a coding sequence which would force the
shields on the outpost to stay at the same timing for certain amount
of time the problem is the security team would have to input it and we
may only be able to do that for about half and hour max." Jade said.

"Good," Natalia nodded. "I have the external command shut down codes
for the outpost, but I can only use them as a last resort since it
would deactivate the entire outpost - shields, cloak, life support -
and corrupt the main computer banks to keep them from falling into the
wrong hands. So let's go with your suggestions as Plan A and leave the
external shut down for Plan B."

"I'll run this program by the security teams and show them how to
install it once they get on the outpost." Jade said as she turned and
headed back to the turbolift, so she could go write the program that
would lock anyone out of the program that allows the shielding
frequency to be changed.

== Strategic Operations Deck, Office of the Advisor=

Vlimar was in his Strategic Operation office, getting
casuality reports. He was scanning through them, seeing not
too many, in terms of a war. "One Starfleet death is always
tragic. We are living a tragedy that only Shakespeare could
write about...", he said to his attaché. The Attaché
looked at Vlimar with puzzled eyes, as he had no idea what
that was coming from, as Vlimar was silent for the last 20
minutes.

Scanning through the reports, something came to mind. There
was no Chimera reports. Vlimar, knowing that Shane's spouse
was in that ship, couldn't bare not knowing what was going
on there.

Vlimar looked at his attaché. "Get me the Chimera's
Sickbay.".

It was Lucy Fleming who took the call. She had literally
only just sat down to begin the shift, having agreed to fill
in for the nurse rotared to work but had not taken care of
where her shoulder bag was resting and as it crashed down to
the floor.
She had responded " Sickbay" automatically but had bent to
the side
so that, for a moment or two, there was noone apparant to be
seen.

Vlimar looked at the screen for a moment. For a second, he
though someone was playing a bad joke on him. He stood
there, impartial, close to unhappy. "Chimera, respond", he
replied coldly.

Frowning, Lucy pulled the bag free from its tangle with the
leg of the stool and looking rather flustered, straightened
up to continue the conversation.
" I'm sorry....." she paused, taking in the rank and thing
{oh great!} as she did so. "...Lieutenant Colonel. How may I
help you?"

Vlimar saw Lucy's face appearing much like a relief. He was
*not* in the mood to freak out about a prank. Also, Lucy's
"adventure" made him grin.

"Lieutenant, I have yet to receive a report from your
sickbay, since 240901.27.", he said. The sentence came out
softly that he initially planned it would, thank for Lucy's
presence.

This was news indeed and Lucy paused, trying to think of the
reason.
" Ummmm...I'm sorry Sir." she replied, feeling vaguely
foolish to have been caught in such a situation and then not
being able to provide a plausible reason.
" Is there anything in particular you wished to see?" she
asked, trying to sound as efficient as possible given the
circumstances..

Vlimar paused. He looked at Lucy, knowing that she had no
idea what he was looking for.
"Let's start with casualities.", he said. "Then, you can
tell me anything else you want...", he replied, softly.

Vlimar saw, from the background, that there was not much
commotion. It was a good sign, at least, for Vlimar.

Lucy settled herself on her stool. Later she would wonder at
herself for feeling so self concious and so aware of the
gentle tone of Vlimars voice.

"We have three casualties currently in sickbay." she said
meeting the blue eyes looking at her. " The Chief of
Security was released for minimal duty earlier today. The
others have minor wounds from accidents sustained whilst on
duty...Sir." she added for good measure.

Vlimar smiled at the civility. He was impressed with such a
swift report. "Who are you, anyway?", Vlimar let go.

Vlimar's eyes opened widely as it was not as professional as
his usual conversations. He knew he could have get that
information from any crew roster. But he asked, and he had
to stay by his question.

" I'm.... Lieutenant Fleming Sir..Lucy Fleming...I'm the
head nurse." she added hurriedly, mentally kicking herself
for stating her first name, for why would he want or need to
know it.
" If you wish to talk to Commander Summers, then I can
either transfer your call or get her to contact you Sir."

Vlimar smiled. "Lucy... Thank you.", he replied. "I do not
need to contact personally Commander Summers.", he added.

Vlimar's eyes rolled. He realized that newly acquired
celibacy was causing him to have "brain farts". Lucy was
pretty, especially for Vlimar's taste. Which made mad about
himself. After all, he's a freaking 45 years old man,
flirting with a 20 some.
It was painful for him as he realized that, still having
Lucy's image in front of him.

"Well, Lucy... Lieutenant, please insure that I receive
daily reports of your status... I mean, your Sickbay's
status...", he said, softly, trying not to make the mistake
he still made. {End this, already!}

Lucy caught back the smile that came too quickly, for it
wouldnt do to laugh at a Lieutenant Colonels muddled speech.
She couldnt though, hide all the amusement but nodded and
replied demurely:
" Ofcourse Colonel. I'm sorry about the lack of
report...I'll look into the cause immediately and ensure it
wont happen again."
{Stop apologising!} she told herself .

Vlimar took a deep breath. He nodded as Lucy finished her
sentence.
"Then, you owe me one...", he said.
Vlimar head hung back in dispair. "Alright, thank you Lu...
Lieutenant.", he said, obviously wanting to end the
conversation.

" My pleasure Colonel" she said wondering now if he was
feeling alright.
" Is there anything else?" she asked when the conversation
was not terminated. She had expected it to end but he still
sat there staring at her.

Vlimar got awaken by her question. "Oh, no no...", he
replied. {Silly man, stop this... now!} "Thank you. Unity
out..."

Vlimar stood there, in front of the screen, feeling ashamed.
He hoped that no one will be aware of this conversation ever
happend. He also hoped, foolishly, that Lucy didn't realize
his... lack of professionalism. Vlimar stood, turned and
looked through the viewport.

{This is just great, made a fool of yourself in front of
Lucy. Get it togueter, V.}

The screen changed to the usual logo and Lucy asked herself
what had just happened, then, with a smile at her own
thoughts, she bent again to retrieve one or two items from
her bag that still lay on the floor but when she
straightened up again, she was blushing a little and it
wasnt solely from the exercise.

"Says here, Detector was 75 percent complete," Rick said
<<SNIP>>

Jo Weathersby looked over at Rick's screen.

"Interesting. I wonder why they didn't finish it?" she said.

"Don't know," was Rick's reply as he looked over the information
on the screen. "Says here, they abandon station before they finish."

Rick continued to study the info. There were enormous amounts of
information on the Detector project to go over. There was a block of
information that he couldn't bring up. When he tried, it said that it
was encrypted. He decided to worry about that little mystery later.
After all, he could sit here and study what he did have for days and
even weeks.

"One thing for sure. They not take it with them," Rick said.

"Did they scuttle it?" Jo asked.

"Not know," Rick said as he continued to read. "Don't think so."

Rick read the numerous reports from the shipyard's former
occupants. The logs told him a great deal about what had happened
during the final days of their stay on the outpost.

"They left ship behind," Rick said.

"So, it should still be out there, docked with the shipyard," Jo said.
"But it's not. Where is it?"

Rick pointed at his screen.

"It say here in these readouts that following explosion in lower levels
of outpost, there was secondary explosion to shipyard itself. Piece
likely broke off taking Detector with it."

"Could the explosion have destroyed the ship?" she asked.

"No, if did, then there would be debris," Rick answered. "Detector
must have slowly drifted away."

"Where?"

Rick stood and walked over to a larger screen. He had the charts of
the nebula brought up on the screen. He typed in a few calculations.
He then brought up the shipyard's schematics on a split-screen.

"Explosion took place here," he pointed at a spot on the schematics.
"Intensity of explosion would have forced it in this direction. It would
not have been much push. It would have been slow."

He focused on the nebula chart.

"My guess would put it somewhere here," he pointed to an area on the
chart.

"That's less than couple of light years from here," she said.

Rick nodded.

"I think we should take look," Rick said, downloading the info to a PADD
before walking to the exit. "I need talk to Commander Ohmsford."

" I would advise you to be absolutely sure about your answer to my next question, Adams. I'm not very happy right now, and honesty would be good. Who changed the plan of attack on the outpost and why was I not informed?" Adams had never seen Tommy this mad before and was looking for a way to escape the room. " Come on now, don't be shy! I am the security chief and do not appreciate my orders being questioned!"

Adams cleared his throught and said, " We were informed that in order to be able to beam the teams on the station without compromising the cloak that it would need to be small and quick. Also, it was kind of last minute decision and we did not wish to burden you with the details..." Adams literally jumped back about ten feet as Tommy screamed," It's my fucking job to know these things, you damned moron! It does not matter that I was wounded or that you had temporary command of security! The quickest and safest way to ensure success was to use four man teams! You know, maybe you should just go to the bridge and work at the station up there for a while. Just get out." Adams saluted quickly and ran from the room.

*** Bridge***

Five minutes later, Adams relieved the tech at the security panel on the bridge and started to run a couple of scans. He took this time to think of what had transpired and decided that he needed to transfer to another department. (or another ship) He thought.

Leela listened to the hiss of the door closing behind her.  She had just returned from Sickbay.  She sighed exasperatedly as she walked over to the replicator for an ice cool glass of water.  She drank down the glass and disposed of it before stripping on her way to the shower.  She knew that that was always relaxing.

Leela let the water streams beat off the tension that had been caging her muscles.  She knew she could be headstrong at times, so she knew that what her department head had said to her was exactly what she had coming.  Just at times she felt like she was the only that could keep things on track and now that she had this new Department Head that just seemed like a know-it-all, Leela felt like she was out of place and unwanted.  She tried to push those thoughts aside as she continued to let the water cleanse her of all the stress as she took breaths of the steam that was created.

The young nurse stepped out her shower and wrapped herself in a towel.  She got dressed and ready for bed in a silk-fitted night gown.  Leela decided she would actually cook herself dinner before she headed for bed.

She walked into her kitchenette and began to prepare the brunch-like dinner that she had been dying to have for awhile now.  Leela was dicing up accents for her omelette when she thought of how her brother was talking about coming up from Earth to visit her on Unity.  It had been almost a year since she last saw her brother and was just thrilled that she would be able to spend quality time with family.  Even though she talks to him every day, she just felt like it just wasn't the same.  Leela figured she would soften up some if she could have her brother around for awhile to just tell her what to do.

MaiKai was sitting at her desk trying to get a hold of reality for a second.  Rachel seemed to be finally situating into school and living on the base.  Mai was glad of that.  She knew she couldn't be with Rachel all the time and was happy knowing that Rachel didn't seem too bothered by it.  Rick had left on some kind of mission or other.  MaiKai was a little bit upset on a number of accounts.  She was worried about Rick's well being.  She probably not only knew about his situation the best among people from Chimera, but she also knew him best over all.She was afraid that if he was away for too long something would happen that would regress his progress and Mai just wouldn't have it.  With not having Rick around for awhile, Mai was also concerned about her well being.  Being pregnant and all she was worried that if something were to happen to her, nobody would be able to get to her as quick as Rick could.  Mai just had so many stress triggers at the moment she hoped she could find something to take her mind off all of it before she ended up getting herself sick or worse like before.

Just then, Ensign Leela Niece, Mai's nurse, walked into Mai's office and started drilling away.

"Did you update the padd on Johnathan Quintet's file?", Lella asked.

"yes," Mai replied.

"Did you find the answer to the sudden illness of Maria Santos?", Leela fired back.

"yes," Mai huffed

"Did you -", but Leela was cut short.

"What is your deal, Ensign?" Mai almost demanded.  "Do you not understand that I am quite capable of this job and don't need you hovering over my desk? Do you not find your superiors' decisions in staffing not to your liking? Please say something because I can not take much more of this".

Leela closed her mouth that was open.  She had to stop herself from saying to irrational for she was known for speaking before thinking.  "I was just double checking. Wanted to see if you needed me to do anything?"

Mai just shook her head, "Well, there are other ways to go about getting something to do compared to just rattling off at your department head".  MaiKai stood up just then, "You know what you can do for me?  You can message Maria Santos' parents and let them know we need to see her in order to administer the crap I concocted for their daughter".

Lella only nodded, "I'll get right on that".

MaiKai barely gave her a chance to finish, "And I already sent ii a report about everything that we have done in our department up to date since I've started manning it and I mean everything.  "I'll have you know this did not go well".  Mai sat back down and got to work on re-filing the updated padds on her desk.  Maybe if she looked stand-offish the Ensign would go off and think about her choice actions before she walked back in this office.  This only proved to Mai what she'd been thinking all the while - nobody and by all means nobody took her seriously.

[USS Chimera] SD:240901.29 Joint Duty Log, Lt JG Gustav Kroitzer & Lt Cmdr Curtis Scardona

Paul Howorth <palsh963@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=/\= Main Engineering – USS Chimera =/\=

It was the day after Gustav was cleared for duty after his accident
and his very speedy recovery and now he was heading to main
engineering to report to Lt Cmdr Scardona so he could get assigned
some work.

As he entered engineering he was surprised to see that the place was
busier than usual and he didn't know why but he wasn't so surprised by
the fact he didn't know why as he didn't really have much contact with
his CO or anyone else from engineering during his recuperation.

Gustav made his way to Scardona's office when he realised that he
wasn't even sure where the CEO was, he stopped a passing ensign and
asked if he knew Scardona's location, it turned out that he was in his
office, Gustav approached the door and pressed the chime.

Scardona, who was busy running some computer simulations of the new
transporter algorithm, didn't even bother to look up when the door
chimed. He beckoned the occupant to enter, and then was surprised to
see Kroitzer back on duty. He had thought he'd be out for at least
another week. He got up from his seat and offered his Deputy his hand.

"Good to see you back up and about, Lt."

Gustav said, "thank you sir, it's good to be back" while taking
Scardona's hand but gripping it a little to tight.
Scardona glanced at his own artificial limb, much more advanced than
the one Kroitzer currently possessed. But the fact that his limb was
artificial was classified. Only he, the Captain, and the CMO knew of
its existence. It looked just like a normal appendage to the naked
eye. He fixed his gaze back on Kroitzer.

"I'm going to assume you're up to date on our orders. I want you to
coordinate with Ops on the implementation of the new transporter
program. Also, I'm ordering you to take it slow, ok?"

"Aye Sir" was Gustav's only reply, he knew that any gaps in his orders
would be filled in by ops "Is there anything else sir" he added.

Curtis shook his head, not really sure what else to say. He figured
there would be some issues with him returning to duty so soon, but it
couldn't be helped. He needed all the good people he could get, and
Gustav was more then capable.

"Not really. I want hourly reports though. We can't afford anymore mistakes."

"Aye sir" Gustav repeated while thinking about his arm adding, "I'll
head over to ops now to get briefed on the mission" as he turned to
leave.

[USS Chimera] 240901.29 | Tarangor Mission | Duty Log, Cdr Rick Rodgers

=Outpost R-12=
=Tarangor Shipyards=
=Tarangor System=

Rick sat at one of the computer terminals, going over the diagnostic
data coming across the screen. He had wanted to perform a full
diagnostic of the outpost and shipyard, but had to settle for a more
passive scan since they wanted to have everything ready to tow
back to Unity in the next 24 hours or so.

Engineers from the Jameson were readying the facility for the trip.
Damaged sections that couldn't be repaired right away were being
properly prepared for the move.

"Rick, have a look at this," Jo Weathersby said from her console.

He walked over to where she was sitting and looked over her
shoulder.

"What I suppose to be seeing?" he asked.

"This is one of the last logs that was put into the system before the
shipyard was abandoned," she said. "It goes over the designs of a
ship that they are considering building."

"Looks like a Defiant-class ship," Rick muttered.

"Exactly," she smiled. "This might be one of the first designs ever
conceived of that class of ship. It's very experimental."

"Perhaps it is," Rick said, typing in a few commands, bring up the
design specs. "Interesting. Seems as if this ship was being fitted
with extra sensors and commun ... commun ... communications
equipment. There also less firepower."

"And look, they actually gave it a name," Jo said. "The Detector."

"These sensors pretty advanced. More advanced than anything
we have. And look ..." Rick pointed at the screen. "... it had cloak
... cloaking device."

He pointed as another part of the screen, "And see this, this was
years before Defiant was even built. Incredible."

She chuckled, "Imagine, it could have been called the
Detector-class instead of the Defiant-class. How uncool would that
have been? Thankfully they didn't start building it."

Rick was now working on a console next to Jo's. His eyes widened.

"I not be too sure," Rick said.

"Why do you say that?"

"Says here, Detector was 75 percent complete."

*** CMOs Office * USS Chimera-C ***

"Well I think that about wraps it up..." Rangi said, leaning
back in her chair and smiling a weak smile across her desk
to Scott.
He nodded agreement and flashed his usual smile back to her.
" What happened to the planned early night?" he asked,
glancing at the wall clock as he spoke.

" I wanted to get this done." Rangi said, turning off the
terminal." I need to stay ahead of it. Commander
Trzetrzelewska said that she or the Captain will carry out
spot checks. When one or the other of them appears in
sickbay, they won't find anything lacking this time."
She tidied some padds into a neat pile and Scott looked at
her doubtfully but said nothing.

He knew that she had taken the Captains speech personally
and in the past few days had made every effort to have
sickbay running at peak efficiency plus some to spare. It
bothered him on two counts.
Firstly, the department had always run smoothly under her
control and the recent stiffening of her attitude could in
some ways, he thought, perhaps do more harm than good.
She had not in any way been to blame for her own illness and
as for Kroitzers secrecy concerning his past, well wasn't
that more a lapse of security?
Secondly, he was concerned that she was over doing things.
She had been seriously ill not so long ago and was now
driving herself hard.

" What say we get something to eat from the mess hall.." he
suggested.

" Oohhh...I don't know. I might just replicate something
later." she replied but he was ready for her answer.
"Why bother..." he said, getting to his feet. " ...the mess
hall is closer...I'm hungry..so are you...let's go there."

She looked up to his face and laughed. " Alright." she said
"..why not indeed."

He smiled in satisfaction for now he could at least make
sure she ate something nourishing and followed her to the
door falling into step beside her as they walked towards the
main reception area.

The duty nurse sat primly on her stool when she saw them
enter. Scott raised a hand and bid her goodnight and she
promptly replied to his greeting.
" Goodnight Lieutenant" she said, returning the quick smile
he gave but her own died as she added
" Commander." when Rangi looked in her direction too.

" Goodnight." Rangi answered without giving the woman much
thought as they crossed to main doors.

Once outside in the corridor it was only a short distance to
the turbo lift and so to the mess hall.
Scott asked Rangi to find a suitable table whilst he ordered
their meal of chicken with assorted vegetables and a drink
to accompany it, nothing extraordinary but appetising and
good.
With the order given, he turned away holding the drinks and
saw that Rangi had chosen a table near to the view port and
was sitting with her chin cupped in her hands, staring out
at the starstream.
She stirred when he arrived to take his place.

" They will be three minutes." he said, placing a glass in
front of her ." You looked deep in thought." he added as he
took he sat down.

"Mmmm..." she said "...I was just going over a few things."
she told him. " Thankyou." she lifted the glass and took a
sip from it.

He decided to say what he had been thinking.
"Rangi..." he began tentativley "...speaking as a colleague
and a friend....do you think you're over doing it?"

"How do you mean?" she asked, expecting him to say that she
needed her early night.

" The change in you." he said "...It's very noticable how
different things have been over the last few days...the
whole atmosphere to sickbay isnt the same."

"Well, that could be a good thing couldnt it?" she countered
but a waiter approached with their meal so Scott didnt
answer until the food was before them and the waiter had
gone.
" Not necessarily." Scott said, resuming the conversation. "
I think it could be damaging to morale."

"Why do you say that?" she asked, her fork poised against
her plate and surprise in her voice.

Scott studied the chicken then lifted his eyes to meet her
gaze.
" One thing that always struck me was the feeling of
camaraderie. Everyone got along with everyone else..the work
was done in a good atmosphere...but just lately...since the
meeting...there's not so much .." he shook his head and
smiled to himself. "... I was going to say 'fun'" he added
"..but you know what I mean?"

Rangi pushed at a green bean then laid her fork down.
" I suppose you're right." she admitted to her meal. " To be
honest, it feels different to me too."
She looked up at Scott.
" I dont like being such a stickler for rules but noone has
ever had cause to critisise my department before.I didnt
like it...and it won't happen again."

" I know that." he said quietly "..but I dont agree that the
blame lies with you. Security checks should have found out
about Kroitzers history. The fact that he kept things secret
.."

"Was down to me." Rangi finished the sentence with her own
words." No Scott..the captain was right...and perhaps
bringing the feel of camararderie as you say....well perhaps
that wasnt the right approach."

" On the contrary, it was." Scott said and stabbed a potato
as though to emphasise the fact.He chewed it, watching her
as he did so.
" You see..." he said, swallowed his mouthfull and continued
"...now people dont know where they are. friendships...the
odd joke now and then..that was good. Its what we lost when
you left Chimera before."

"Oh come on!" Rangi said in a tone of disbelief. " You're
saying noone is friends anymore? Ofcourse they are."

" Yes they are." Scott agreed " But the feeling of..I dont
know how to explain it...now everyone is being careful of
what they say..what they do. Rangi...their work was
exemplary before..you know that...and if the captain or the
XO found a medi-dish out of place...what would that say to
them?..that the department is failing?"

A few moments passed during which Scott ate another morsel.
Rangi sighed.
" Perhaps you're right." she said. " I dont like it
either."

She caught his eye and he grinned to her. " Eat some
chicken." he said pointing at her plate with his fork.
She did as he ordered smiling rather selfconciously.

" We have 720 crew." he said "...and in the last three days
we have completed dna tests of two thirds that number. You
have triple teams on every shift..they're working round the
clock to complete the task in double quick time. I think
it's the captain who's going to be surprised when he
visits...not us!"

Rangi couldnt help but chuckle at his statement but in
seriousness added
" I dont mind you saying it... I want things to run as they
always have done..it's just...." Her words tailed away.

Scott waited until she looked at him. " It's a combination
isnt it? You were ill..you're away from your family and the
captain...with respect...should have chosen his words
better."

They ate for a while without comment, each enjoying the food
and each thinking over what had been said.

"Have you spoken to the commodore lately?" Scott enquired
and saw the immediate change to Rangis expression.

" Yes..last night." she said. " He mentioned that he's
looking forward to us all being together.... that must mean
that Martin is back on the base..although he couldnt say so
ofcourse."

Scott nodded.
" Perhaps it wont be too long before we return there." he
said and with little effort, steered the conversation to
lighter subjects, knowing that she would consider all that
they had said and that there was no need to add anything
else.

[Gorkan Memorial - Khitomer]

Chisulo looked up at the stately visage enshrined on the marble podium before him. A gargantuan statue of Chancellor Gorkan was stand triumphantly before him, surveying the scene of the deadly Romulan attack that threatened this world so long ago. It was winter in the region, and Tedros held his hands inside the warm confines of his coat's lined pockets. He breath issued forth clouds of condensation as he exhaled through the scarf wrapped tightly about his neck and face. He turned and sat on a stone bench, where he pulled a newspadd out of his breast pocket and began reading. That was the signal his contact would be looking for.

A Klingon figure had been watching Chisulo closely from the path leading towards the forest from the memorial. Recognising their contact signal, the large man walked forwards, digging his hands into the pockets of his large coat. He stopped slightly behind the bench, looking up at the statue of the great Klingon diplomat.
Tedros put down the padd, face down on the bench beside him, not looking his new neighbor in the eyes. "Terrible accident on New Geneva. Twenty million people."

"It was not an honourable way to die," the man simply said, then walked into the trees.
Tedros waited a moment before turning in pursuit. he strolled non chalantly into the treeline where his contact had disappeared, making sure there were no passersby that would see him.

Kortagh didn't look back but new Tedros was following him. He moved quickly and silently through the thick trees, the shaking of their leaves causing clouds of spores to fall down that made it almost look like snow. After several minutes moments he entered a small clearing. In the centre of the clearing a large icy pond was covered with thick layers of fog that stretched out through the whole clearing. Kortagh walked straight ahead and disappeared.
Tedros descended into the thick fog where he saw his contact go, but he lsot sight of him. He looked to the left, but to no avail. He dug his hands deeper into his pockets as he gazed to the right and kept walking forward. Where had he gone? "Quickly, inside," Kortagh's voice suddenly said as he grabbed Tedros' arm and pulled him through a doorway. "Cloaked shuttle. I've made sure it's secure."

Tedros let out a sigh of releif as the klingon Commander closed the door behind him. "Commander, thank you for meeting me at such short notice." Chisulo extended a hand in greeting. "I hope it wasn't too much trouble to get here."

Kortagh gripped Chisulo's hand strongly. "It's no matter. The shuttle makes good speed," he replied, then rubbed his bearded chin. "What can I do for you?"

"It's about the General at Narendra. His cooperation with the Romulans in allowing them access to the duranium mines in the system is most troubling to my superiors. Is the empire joining sides with the Praetor?" Chisulo asked.

"Ptagh!" Kortagh spat, clearly disgusted at the mention of General Torag'k. "The General was once an honourable warrior, but his actions are disgracing the Empire. Unfortunately only a few seem to think so. My people seem to have lost their taste for battle; instead they make friends with enemies that have no honour."
"So this cooperation with the Romulans extends beyond Narendra?" Chisulo asked rhetorically. "How far does it go? Doe the Chancellor support the General?"
"The High Council is divided; some say there is risk of civil war. The High Chancellor does not have much influence anymore," Kortagh said as he paced up and down. "The Houses are constantly at each other's throats about the Romulans. Some say that our only path back to glory is to join the Romulans in war against the Federation."
Chisulo crossed his arms. "That would be most troubling. Why do they not ally with the Federation? Would that not also be a suitable way to regain the empire's honor? It does not make since."
"You see, Captain, the difference is the Federation have redeemed themselves, shown themselves to be honourable," Kortagh explained carefully. "The Romulan Empire has always been deceptive back-stabbers. How goes the saying... a Trill doesn't change her spots? And now Torag'k has allowed the Romulans to mine on Narendra, of all places. The man has no honour!"
"Something doesn't add up." Chisulo muttered as he tried to piece the puzzle together. "Has the Federation made any attempts to speak withthe council?"
"Your Ambassador Torres has tried many times to speak to the High Chancellor, but she is being restricted at every avenue. She has succeeded in convincing him to send a delegation to Unity, but I believe it has been done only to appease the Federation. Anti-Federation sentiment is steadily growing among some of the Houses and she might find her life is not as secure on Q'onos as it once was," he warned.
Chisulo grimaced. "Something is not adding up, Kortagh. I feel there is some underlying motive to the Generals actions. Perhaps he is being bribed, or coerced in some way and is pulling the High Council along with him."

"It is possible," Kortagh replied. "He was an honourable warrior with high standing, respected by many. His alliance with the Romulans is unexpected and not something he would have done lightly... or willingly."

"I'm going to travel to the Narendra system and continue my investigation." Chisulo replied. "According to old Federation records, the duranium quality at Narendra was not suitable for ship building. Either the Romulans are doing something else with it, or using it as a cover for another operation. But that is secondary. I'm ordered to get to the heart of this cooperation between General Torag'k and Romulus, and I can not do that unless I go there myself."

"You must be careful; Narendra is no place for Federation citizens to be seen right," Kortagh warned. "You'll need assistance."

"There is space on my shuttle, Commander, if you would care to join me." Chisulo offered.

After a moment of consideration, Kortagh said, "Very well. We don't have much time to waste. I have some contacts which my be able to help us."

"We'll pick you up in six hours." Chisulo handed the Commander a small device. "This will allow us to lock onto you with our runabout's transporters. Activate it when you're ready to depart." Chisulo approached the hatch. "Until then, Commander Kortag."

[USS Chimera] 240901.28 | Tarangor Mission | Duty Log, Cdr Rick Rodgers

=Outpost R-12=
=Tarangor Shipyards=
=Tarangor System=

Rick's transporter pattern appeared near a group of security personnel
from the Raptor, who had already secured the area. They all wore EVA
suits since the facility had no power, hence no life support or environmental
systems.

It was also dark, with only small portable lights being carried by the new
arrivals giving off any light.

"I hate wearing these things," Jo Weathersby said, standing to Rick.

"You not need to be here," Rick said. "Your place is on Qashqai."

"Yeah, well, I couldn't pass up this opportunity," she countered.

'I also need to keep an eye on you just in case,' she thought.

"Thought you believed better to use this place as target practice," Rick
said.

"True, and I still do. But I also find these old relics interesting. Now,
which way?"

Rick pointed his light to a darkened corridor, "This way."

Rick motioned as if he was going to lead the way, but one of the
security officers stepped in front of him.

"Sorry, sir, but we have no idea what could be down that way. One
of my people will take point," the security officer said.

"Fine ... Lieutenant ..."

"Sidda," the security officer said.

"Sidda. Well, lead the way," Rick said, not wanting an argument, even
though he had his own phaser and knew well enough how to use it.

One of Sidda's crewmen took point as the small team of security and
engineering personnel slowly made their way down the dark corridor.
After a few minutes, they arrived at a partially opened turbolift hatch.

"We need to go down a deck," Rick said. "Reactor down there."

Sidda nodded, having his people force the doors open. After shining a
light down the lift tube, he ordered a couple of his people to climb down.

The others waited for what seemed like an eternity until the two security
crewmen gave the all clear. They all climbed down, two at a time, which
took time. When they had all made it to the lower deck, Rick flashed his
light to his left.

"Reactor a few meters that way," Rick said.

They arrived at the reactor room a minute or so later. Several lights
shined in the direction of the large reactor.

"Time to get to work," Rick said, placing his tool kit on a small table next
to the reactor.

He scanned it with his tricorder and nodded.

"Not too bad. Offline for a few decades. Still good shape."

He looked back at the others.

"Jo, man reactor control console," he said, then pointed to one of the
Jameson's engineers. "You ... what you name?"

"Bullaoff," the engineer replied. "Ensign Bullaoff."

"Bullaoff, you assist me. Do as I say. Got it," Rick said.

Bullaoff just nodded.

Rick got to work. He smiled, hoping that the ensign didn't notice through
the head gear he was wearing. Rick was in his element, not just tinkering
with power relays or transporter emitters, but real engineering work. The
kind of thing that made engineers miracle workers.

Several minutes went by and Rick worked at a quick, but careful pace.
Almost an hour later, he and Bullaoff backed away from the reactor.

"Try it now, Jo," he said.

She nodded and worked the controls. After a couple of minutes of trying,
she shook her head.

"Nothing," she said.

Rick grunted something before returning to the reactor. Several minutes
went by with him looking it over in great detail.

"I see problem," Rick said as he went back to work.

When he backed away a few minutes later, he nodded to Jo.

She nodded back and again worked the controls. This time, lights in the
room began to flicker. When the flickering stopped and everything went
dark again, Rick felt as if he was going to scream.

Then, the lights returned, this time they no longer flickered. Rick smiled,
walking up to the control panel next to Jo.

"We should have power to most of the shipyard and station," Jo said.
"There seems to be considerable damage to the lower levels of the station.
Besides that, everything seems to check out. We should also have life
support, so we can take these damn things off."

Rick grinned, taking off his head gear and taking a deep breath.

+tap+ "Rodgers to Qashqai. Reactor online."

Standing next to Jo Weathersby, Rick looked over the holographic
image of the ship yard that was currently abandoned in the Tarangor
System.

"Looks like a relic," Jo said.

"Maybe old, but still can do job," Rick responded. "Many of systems
basically same use ... same we use today."

"Seems like a waste of time. We'd be better off using it for target
practice. I mean, it's over fifty years old. I don't think my mother
was even born yet when they built this thing."

Rick shook his head, "Still useful. Especially with war. Even a couple
more squadrons of fighters or 'nother Defiant could be big help. With
a little work, more maybe possible."

"If you say so," she said. "I'm just glad to be going out on a mission
that doesn't involve us being thrown directly into a fight or bring fired
upon. For once, I'm caught up on repairs and I'd like to keep it that
way for as long as possible."

"Romulans could still attack us. Not that far from Rommie space."

She turned to look at Rick, "You sure know how to put a nice, positive
spin on things, don'tcha."

"I just realistic. Know how things happen."

"Well, I'm going to live in my little fantasy world ... at least for a
couple more days," she walked back to her main workstation. "So, how
did your wife take it with you going out on this trip?"

"Not well," Rick answered. "But she understand. I worried that she
too worried about me."

"She IS your wife," Jo stated.

Rick nodded, "Still, I can't worry all time about blackouts if I to ... if I'm
to get back to normal duties."

He turned off the holographic image.

"We arrive soon. I need to be on bridge," he said.

"See ya later," she replied as Rick exited the engineering section.

[USS Chimera] SD 240901.27 | Tarangor Mission | Duty Log, Cmdr Ohmsford (1TF Sci/Eng)

= Bridge - USS Qashqai =

"Commander, we're arriving at the Tarangor System," 1st Lieutenant Siashon said from the helm console. The journey to Tarangor had been a quick, barely taking 3 hours at low warp. Two ships were accompanying the Qashqai: the USS Rapier and the USS Jameson. The latter was a tugship assigned to Unity from the Corps of Engineers while the former was there for protection.

"Take us out of warp, Lieutenant. Set a course for the outpost," Bren ordered and a moment later the ship dropped out of warp and the system came into view. The Tarangor System was a beautiful sight to behold. A twinkling old white dwarf that died millions of years before lit up the interior of the crimson planetary nebula that was visible for light years in every direction. It was a common sight from Unity and on Aeran III during the nighttime.

The Regula class design that was Outpost R-12 loomed closer on the small viewscreen of the Defiant class and the shipyard appeared in the distance a few minutes later.

"Having trouble with the long range sensors, Commander," Commander Rodgers said from the Ops console where he was monitoring the Qashqai's systems and the sensors.

Bren nodded. "It's to be expected. The nebula is abundant in heavy metals but interferes with some sensor frequencies." The system was well within Federation space, but still close enough to both the Klingon and Romulan Empires that they had to remain on their guard. It was an ideal hiding place for ships.

"We're within transporter range, sir," the Tellarite helm officer reported.

"All stop," Bren ordered. "Signal the Rapier to patrol the perimeter and the Jameson to stand by."

"Commander Rodgers," Bren said as he stood up from his chair. "I'd like you to investigate the shipyard's reactor and try to get the operations systems going. Once that's done, I'll take a team to access the control centre. We need to know what's functional and if the yard will survive a trip at warp. A security team from the Rapier will accompany you and if you need additional Engineers I'm sure the Jameson can spare a few."

-

A few hours later found Bren sitting at the science station studying the layout of the shipyard and occasionally glancing at the specs of the station. Outpost R-12 had been abandoned in late 2367 when the experimental reactor that had been installed malfunctioned and had to be jettisoned. The resulting explosion destroyed some of the lower decks and left the station partially uninhabitable and without a power source. With the station unable to support the shipyard, the entire project was abandoned and the two structures left derelict.

The shipyard contained some advanced technology for its time and had been built to construct Defiant class ships which would help guard against the looming Borg threat. The Defiant Project was still in development phase then and it had been hoped that R-12 would not only provide additional Defiant ships but also keep an eye on the Romulan Empire, which was suspiciously quiet in the 2360's. The station had scientific laboratories that were intended to conduct research into nanotechnology and assimilation reversal, but they were never implemented.

When the Borg advanced to Sector 001, R-12 was under review for being reactivated, but then the Dominion War broke out and plans were abandoned. With the Borg threat eliminated in the Delta Quadrant, plans to reactivate R-12 was permanently shelved as more pressing matters priortised Federation resources.

"Sir," Lieutenant Siashon said from the helm console as she turned towards Bren. "The Rapier is hailing us; Commander Telson would like to speak with you. He says it's urgent."

[USS Chimera] ||SB 234: UNITY|| SD 240901.26, Personal Log, Commodore Shane Guzman

"shane.guzman@mojwap.sk" <shane.guzman@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

====== Shane's quarters, SB 234: UNITY
======

Shane filled his tall cup with strong red wine, seated
himself on the sofa and said: "Computer, open personal
log"

[Personal Log open, start when ready]

Shane sighed and said: "Personal log, Commodore Shane
Guzman, star date 240901.26. I must say that since both
Rangi and little Martin are away, it's very dull here.
Besides duty business, there is little I can … or better
said I would like to do. Maybe it's because a lot of my
long year friends from the Chimera are away and there are
very few here on the UNITY, I could call friends. "

Shane took a sip and went on: "For example Terek, he's
busy with all the resources business. He is required to
watch the resources supply lines and now build a processing
facility where we could refine some of the material we get.
Since UNITY was never used … or meant to host an ore
processing facility, he had both to find fitting rooms for
all the equipment and find and assemble the equipment as
well. Dirty and tiring work … nothing one could envy".

"Considering the resources, Commander Ohmsford is away on
the Qashqai to acquire and fetch an old Starfleet Fleet yard
that was forgotten for almost 50 years some 3 light years
from here. Special forces Command tasked me with the mission
of getting the ship yard online … and produce ships as
soon as possible. I can understand the need for this, since
Starfleet and especially Special forces took quite some
beating in the recent battles. The need for repairing ships
and building new ones is very high. The old yard, Ohmsford
is going to acquire, is not a bit one … with limitation to
ships up to the defiant class. Considering the nature of
SSF, smaller ships are just what we need … so I expect the
yard become very busy once it will be here and online."

Shane took another sip and continued:" Ohmsford took
Commander Rodgers on the mission and I am happy about it. I
was deeply concerned when Rick was injured some time ago and
very happy when he was cleared fit for duty. I wanted to
assign him back to his old CEO position, but the board
examining his status declared that he can not be assigned to
a department leading role. Usually, I would try to find a
go-around-way this decision, but in the current situation we
need all support we can need and messing with a Starfleet
Command board decision isn't a wise thing. I know that my
acting CEO isn't happy about Rick at all. She was the CEO
until 1TF assumed command over the UNITY and it was me who
assigned Rick to the position afterwards. To be honest, I do
not have the same faith in her abilities that I have into
Rick's … and for the time being, I can only hope that
both of them learn to live and work alongside."

Pausing, Shane scratched his chin before going on:
"Captain Chisulo in again away. I've send him to
investigate the matter of Klingon – Romulan cooperation.
Hints that CHisulo collected on his first trip into Klingon
territory were very disturbing, since an alliance between
this two powers would shift the power balance in the whole
quadrant considerably. Personally, I do not think that the
Klingons would cooperate with the Romulans … but one thins
is sure. The Romulans are far more powerful then
Intelligence assumed. They can have large resources till now
unknown to our Intel … or some other power is aiding them.
I am not sure what scenario is worse for the Federation. I
hope Chisulo will return safe and sound and provide
information that would bring some light into this matter."

"Adding pain to injury … I've got news from the
Federation council. Several diplomatic delegations have been
send to UNITY to represent local powers in this sector. The
council granted them the right to build embassies on the
UNITY and rather sooner then later I can expect dozen of
foreign diplomats running on my station. Of course" Shane
scowled" a lot of them would enjoy diplomatic immunity …
what means that they can do what ever they please and we can
not throw them into our nice shining new cells. The first
delegations are about to arrive within these days, so I am
far from happy."

"My deputy" Shane went on after yet another sip,
"Colonel Pont Brillant is coping with the task force
operations quite well. I am lucky to have an experience
officer like him in this position, because he handles most
affairs on his own and I can concentrate on all the
'development' projects for the task force. One thing is
not so nice … he and me does not communicate very often,
what bothers me. I think we have to set up regular meetings
every other day … so nothing escapes our attention.
Another point is that we have to build a trusting relation
… what is not that easy in a short time. Maybe I was too
long used on Rangi being my XO … and have some
difficulties to accept anyone new"

"Well, Rangi being away on the Chimera caused a gap in
UNITY's medical as well. Sure, Captain T'Vel covers it
nicely, but … hmm … somehow I still expect to see Rangi
in the infirmary. I suppose its alike Pont Brillant, I need
to get more in touch with T'Vel. Her reports are always on
time and filled with precision and it seems that all medical
sub departments are working fine. Maybe I should check with
MaiKai … to see how is she doing." Shane smiled:
"Looks like that the counseling department is one of the
most busy and successful one. As I see the number of
evaluations and internal messages within that department,
they work on overkill mode. A few more weeks like this …
and everyone of this station will be evaluated, what means
that a new round will began … inclusive myself." Shane
frowned: "what is not such a good thing …"

Shane finished the cup and said: "I am concerned about my
security department. Not that Joeleco and hir guys are not
working well … but let's face it … well is not enough.
In the current situation, we need security forces that are
far more active and watchful. This is again a point I need
to address … and soon."

"On a brighter note, I've got some hints that
Tal'shiar finally gave up the vendetta against my family.
Sources telling me this are not 100% reliable, but I think I
can trust them. I shall contact my brother Martin and ask
him to return with little Martin to UNITY. Risa is a great
holiday planet and I am sure both of them had a great time
there, but I long to see my son again and Martin's needed
on the Chimera. I am sure Captain Rojac will be glad to have
his diplomatic advisor finally back. When all will be quiet
… then I recall Rangi back to UNITY and all three of us
will finally be together again."

"Computer, end recording log".
