[USS Chimera] SD 240905.02 | SB Unity | Joint Log, Commo Guzman (1TF CO) & Maj Kinn (1TF Intel)

====== CO's ready room, TF Operations centre,
SB 234: UNITY ======

Unlike his habit, Shane was spending his time in the CO's
ready room in the TF operations area – instead of his own
office in the TF Command area. The reason was simple, Terek
and his investigation in the matter of Rangi&Martin
kidnapping. Shane wanted to be near when any discovery will
be made …just in case a 'speedy' decision will be
required.

When Major Kinn requested a meeting, Shane was half decided
to refuse it for the moment, but TF's acting intel advisor
wasn't someone to be ignored, so Shane reluctantly agreed.

====== Some laters ======

"Commodore," Major Kinn said as she approached the 1st Task
Force Commander. "I'm sorry to interrupt you sir, but I've
discovered something you might find interesting."
Shane nodded in greeting and asked: "What's the matter,
Major?"

"I was studying the information we recovered from the R-12
communications beacon. I cross-referenced it with all Task
Force officers to see if there was any connection, in an
attempt to find some more concrete evidence that we might
have a mole," she explained. "And I think I found him."
"Mole?" Shane asked, "are you sure you know what about
you talk? All TF officers have been cleared by SSFI" he
said, but then his voice trailed off as he remembered that
Tal'shiar was FAR advanced to any Intel Starfleet could
offer. "Whom do you have in mind, Major?"

"Major Varis Liev," Giella said. "He has access to the
communications network, which in itself is not suspicious
given his clearance level, but what I did find suspicious is
his routine access to discarded files. Unity's system
automatically discards sensor ghost information received by
comm relays and he accessed those files, specifically the
ones received by R-12. He also transmitted information on
three occasions to the R-12 beacon, disguised as a routine
identification request from Unity."
"Varis Liev?" Shane asked surprised. It was for the
second time today that the Major's name appeared in
connection to criminal behavior. It was most probably just
mere coincidence, but slowly, Shane began to doubt the
coincidence. "Do you have the details here?" he asked.

She showed him a padd containing the information and the
specific dates Varis accessed the R-12 files. "I know it
gets rather complicated. What it comes down to is that
there's evidence of three people accessing the Tarangor R-12
communications outpost, which was supposed to be inactive;
Major Varis, his accomplice and a third party who's sent us
the repeated Federation news logs. Varis was getting orders
from R-12 and transmitting it back to his accomplice... I
suspect that when Varis found out you were sending Ohmsford
and Rodgers to Tarangor, he sent word and had the bomb
planted to destroy the relay. As for the third party, I
don't think they're directly connected, and I don't think
Varis realised someone else was sending disguised
information to Unity, but I don't think it's a coincidence
they were using the same comm beacon either."
Shane shook his head: "That's really too much
information at once, Major. I really don't see why a JAG
major should access such information and your other points
are rather suspicious, but what is your point?"

"I'd like to request permission to search Varis' quarters
and to access all his files for a full-scale investigation,"
she requested.
"Hmmm" Shane said, "we are here talking about a high
ranking JAG officer with a service record of excellence.
Such an investigation could ruin the man's career" HE
smiled a bit: "But considering the fact that the Major is
possibly kidnapped, such an investigation might bring light
in the whole matter. You have my permission to do so, Major
… start the investigation at once.

"Thank you, sir," the Intel advisor nodded, then braced
herself to raise a sensitive topic.

"Commodore, there's something else... I thought it was
related to something else at the time, sir, but one of the
logs was an article about the kidnapping of an Admiral's
wife and son by Orion pirates. Since the other logs turned
out to be warnings about the attacks on New Geneva and V'Tar
II, I think that was a warning about the kidnapping," Giella
said. "Someone's got inside information about the Romulan
plans, and they're sending it to us."
Shane was a bit shocked. If Giella was right, he had a
warning just under his very nose for a week or so … but
was too silly to understand it. He would yell at himself …
would he be alone, but had to calm down in the Intel
Major's presence. "Do you think someone is warning us
ahead of Romulan plans? Assuming that the kidnapping of
Rangi, Martin and Liev is a plan of Romulan origin?"

"It seems very likely, sir," she replied. "Though the method
is unorthodox, the information we received is more valid
than anything our own agents in the Empire have been able to
come up with recently."

Shane sighed. "I don't suppose there is any more of this
warning messages on R-12, isn't it?"

"There are, sir, we're still studying them, trying to make
sense of it all. There were two names which were repeated
that could be important. You should be familiar with them...
Nicolas Harker and Samantha Palmer?"

"Yes" Shane nodded, "I know both those persons, Mr.
Harker is an ex- Black Ops agent and defected to the Romulan
Empire. Miss Palmer was an ex- agent as well, but she's
dead. Both of them served for a time on board the Chimera
when I was her CO." He looked at Giela and said :
"Major, I'd like you to assign all available sources to
this project. The personal side of Rangi and Martin is one
thing, but those messages warned us of disasters that cost
millions of innocent lives. I want those messages having
sense as soon as possible. If you should require any
additional resources or help, just ask … all will be ready
for you."

"Of course, sir," Giella nodded, understanding the severity of the situation.

"One more things, Major. DO you have any clues about the
current position of the kidnappers?"

"None at the moment, sir," she responded. "We're currently scanning all energy and warp signatures in the vicinity and will hopefully have a more clear indication shortly."

Shane nodded saying nothing. He remained silent for a
moment. What went through his head … one could only guess.
But from the look of his face, it wasn't anything
pleasant.

"Dismissed, Major" he said at last.

Giella nodded with respect to the Commodore before leaving him to his thoughts.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240905.02 ||Hermes Negotiations JL||

[Briefing Room - EAS Hermes - Grand Banks]

"Through these doors, Captain Rojac." The officer waved Cropa toward to large decorative doors affixed with the emblem of the Erassian Second Fleet. Cropa nodded toward the officer, and then looked back toward his entourage. He nodded to Jardan, who stepped forward to the doors and opened it for his Captain to pass.

The room was quite elegant in its design, obviously meant to inspire and awe all those Erassian - and intimidate the rest. One wall was bedecked in various katanas with shining plaques beneath them stating their name and legend, another of various ship designs included in the fleet, the third wall looked out into the far reaches of the stormy nebula and all of its wonder. Rojac took it all in stride, and instead kept his gaze locked on the two individuals already seated along the table. Cropa stopped five feet away from the opposite side of the large conference table and held his hands tightly behind his back. "General, Colonel, you have a beautiful ship here. I am honored to be aboard."

"I suppose you should be honored as you are the first Starfleet Officers to be allowed aboard the Fifth Generation Hermes but in any case it's good to have you here Captain.  That of course applies to the rest of you as well Athena, Anya, Harbright's pet project Lieutenant Jardan and the other security Lieutenant.  Ambassador Ayanami welcome as always."  Viktor replied Colonel Anios just nodded.

Athena let her gaze flick towards Viktor and the Colonel as if taking in their general health and then looked blankly out at the storm thinking {Fair start.}  She remained standing tall in her spot following Rojac's lead as her arms hung relaxed at her side which was in contrast to other involuntary responses.

Alecto said loudly "We may as well get started then.  Feel free to take a seat everyone." and walked to the seat next to where Viktor was sitting.

Colonel Anios walked up to Anya and gave her a hug and then a grin "It's good to see you again Stormchild, it really has been to long."

Anya replied "Likewise Storm-mage."  Upon seeing Captain Rojac's enquiring look Anya said to him "Serena here was my Wing CO during the Solrin War.  We saved each others asses many times and the acid comments that passed between us during the transmission actually passes for humour between us as General Ivanov is already painfully aware."

Viktor rolled his eyes "Well it made briefings back then a hell of a lot harder to go through I tell you."

"I agree." Rojac said, pulling at his collar as he sat in the offered chair. The environmental controls seemed a little more toasty than aboard his own ship.

Turning from the storm outside the window, Athena took a seat while thinking {He looks tired}.  She settled into the seat and folded her arms into her lap and took a closer look at Viktor assessing him with a little more scrutiny this time.  {Is that gray hair... surely not... }  Her gaze briefly flicked to the window again as lightning streaked by and then back to Viktor.  {No.. it is gray.}

"Let me tell you why we're here." Rojac said as the rest of his team took their seats. "As you all know, following the attack on the Aeran system and Starbase UNITY, Starfleet deployed a cloaked sensor outpost network along the border with the Romulans. As you also know, one of the Outposts were compromised by Romulan agents a month ago. It is bad enough that our cloaked sensor network was discovered, but the opportunity exists that the communications codes between our two empires may have been cracked, and our navigation beacons may no longer be secured."

"Of course, we all know about these occurrences, and both of our governments have taken necessary precautions to override these security threats." Rojac continued. "But the puzzling thing is, before the outpost was destroyed and encrypted message was sent out in three separate bursts to three separate locations; and this is the second time this has occurred."

"The first one was sent to a deserted planet in the Qualor system. The second to an asteroid belt in the Barradas system. The third we traced into Erassian space, but Starfleet was not permitted access to continue our search."

Viktor steepled his hands on the table.  "You said that was the second incidence.  What was the first?"

"Yes." Rojac said. "And here is where the situation get more troubling. The first situation this occured was during an incident in the Antigonis system the Chimera was sent to investigate."

"Where you lost the USS Quasar and found it dismantled in a Breen base and as I recall the crew were in much the same state as the ship.  I don't recollect if that was before or after SSF Command ordered the removal of the fighter decks and ODA decks to make way for an office block for the Task Force Brass...after I think.  Strategic thinking there."  Colonel Anios said seriously although she chuckled at the last sentence.

Rojac was rather surprised that Colonel Anios knew about the incident - but then again, Erassian Intelligence was famed throughout the quadrant. "Yes. The Quasar was captured by Breen forces and disassembled at a research base. Before the Chimera destroyed the base however, similar transmissions were broadcast in similar locations. Two ended up as dead ends, and the third went again into Erassian space. Now this was before the Mutual Defense Pact and the current war; and the relations between our governments was even more tenuous. Needless to say, Starfleet investigators were denied access, and we weren't willing to share what we were looking for either."

"A situation which isn't much different from now.  Considering that the Federation had knowledge of Klingon and Romulan cooperation and said nothing to the Alliance despite the very high risk to our Charos and Toren systems where there are populations of around fifteen Billion civillians.  The same couldn't be said of the Alliance who sent warnings to the Federation of the Romulans building up their forces for the past five years and gave intelligence regarding the construction of six Scimitar II Class Carriers.  Both warnings were ignored and what do you have as a result you now have a highly unfavourable war against the Romulans and how many millions dead on V'Tar II?"  Alecto commented loudly.

"It is troubling," Rojac said, "to think that the Romulans at Outpost 0071 and the Breen at Antigonis might be cooperating. If the Breen get involved, starfleet will have to concentrate more ships along our northern border, and draw away our efforts protecting UNITY territory and Erassian space. That is why it is integral we gain access to continue this investigation to see where these leads go. What does the Federation need to do for Erassian cooperation?" The Starfleet Captain asked.

Viktor gave a cold smile "I can give you a long list on that one.  How about first of all and I really do stress this one before sending a ship to the Alliance for the love of the gods read the fucking treaty that you signed up to.  In there it tells you all about how the Erass System is sensitive and as such is a no go area and as such is why nosey Starfleet Intelligence vessels posing as Survey Craft will be told in no uncertain terms where to go.  The other reason we don't usually mention is that the system is heavily mined with stealth mines and automated defense systems.  Secondly the Federation has to recognise that the Alliance isn't a naughty child to be talked down to and chastised.  The Erassian Alliance has been a Soveriegn entity for over one hundred and forty years and before that was not, since then has not been, currently is not and will never be a member of the United Federation of Planets nor subserviant to it.  Therefore the next time a Starfleet Officer demands something off either one of the Alliance's Ships, Worlds or Ambassadors expect the answer to be delivered at the point of a charged plasma cannon.  Don't get me wrong though we have no objections to you asking or requesting something it's just that getting treated like second rate citizens wears thin after a while.  After the Federation has mastered that then we can move on to phase two."

Athena sat quietly listening carefully to what both men said.  A couple of time she bit her lip to keep from giving a sarcastic laugh or two.  And now although she continued to listen carefully; she couldn't help but realize how much the tension that she felt seemed to resemble the storm that she watched out the window from her seat.  She found her hands in her lap tightly clasped to help keep herself from interrupting.  Sometimes it just bit flying monkey butt to be a silent observer.

"All due respect, General, I did read the 'fucking' treaty. Which is one of the reasons why our course was diverted here to the Grand Banks and your fleet's position." Rojac responded. "Second, to the accusation of my fellow Captain's treating your people as second rate citizens, I apologize. However, your side of the fence is not quite pristine either. You ruffle feathers, push boundaries, and mock the principles the Federation is founded upon quite openly.  Which is why the Alliance withdrew from the Federation to begin with. But let me get to my point General, we have our differences. We have our strengths, no matter what technical jargon is tossed about in that treaty, it's sole purpose is to unite our peoples in this struggle against our common enemies. I think its time we go about it." Rojac said. "Now, you mentioned a phase two."

Viktor continued "Phase two is quite simple communication and collaboration.  Firstly communication, whilst our intelligence is very good they still aren't omnipotent, so sharing of information that is beneficial to our security and well being would be much appreciated as our continued existence does continue to benefit you even if certain corrupt members of the Federation Council may disagree.  In turn we would give intelligence that would benefit your continued security and well being...which in turn benefits us by having a strong ally ergo everybody wins.  Secondly, collaboration as mutual partners in this war by now you already know that we both have different strengths.  You have numbers and resources and many multi-talented personnel and we have highly trained elite fighter squadrons and special forces units as well as unique tactics.  Make use of these strengths and bring us in on operations you are planning where our participation can increase the operational efficiency resulting in a quicker result with less casualties.  Surely neither of these are such an extravagant thing to ask?"

"Not at all." Rojac said. "In fact it falls in line with the request I was going to make. Since our access is barred to the Erass system, perhaps you can trace the communication for us?"

Athena smirked and quickly hid it.  She watched the colors swirl out the window as a wave of emotion hit her.  She straighten in her seat and took a calming breath.

"Intelligence already did that.  A Starfleet Intelligence vessel poking around tends to raise eyebrows.  Unsurprisingly the signal did not go to somewhere in the Erass System but was routed through a system of cloaked communications relays to somewhere within the Canna System.  We sent in in a number of drone scouts which detected a number of Breen ships in the area enough to suggest a cloaked Breen Base in the area but the drones haven't found it meaning it's likely on one of the two habitable planets in the system rather than an orbital facility."  Viktor said.

Anya groaned "The Canna System?  I hate the frozen north, I remember trying to dig out rouge Solrin ships at the tail end of the war, it was damn near impossible to find them on those two frozen balls of crud in the Canna System."

"Which is partly why I'm sending the EAS Prometheus with you amongst other reasons too both political and security related."  Viktor replied shortly.

[USS Chimera] SD240905.02 Joint Duty Log - MCapt/Spc COps/AOps Jade Reese and Cooper Morrow (NPC)

=/\= Bridge, USS Chimera C =/\=

+taps+ Specialist Coop (NPC) I need you to run a diagnostic on the short range scanners. +taps+ Jade said reading the reports from the latest scan and seeing that the pass was creating some disturbance, but she wanted to make sure it was only the storm and other things that are happening in the pass.

+taps+"Aye madam." Coop reported. His hands were running across the console. He was disabling single parts of the short range sensor aparatus and running a quick diagnostics. Spectral sensors, radiation sensors, proximity detectors, particle analyzers... one by one shut doww for a few milliseconds and then restarted

+taps+ Once you ran the diagnostic send me the results and I'll get back to you what I need you to do if anything. +taps+ Jade said tapping a few buttons making a small adjustment to the shields and life support to make sure none of the radiation was getting through. It took a few minutes to get back the results of the diagnostics, but so far everything seemed clear.

+taps+ "This is Coop. The diagnostics shows that everything is within the tolerance. Sensor range is limited due to the ongoing storm, but otherwise there is nothing unusual. The disturbance, you're picking up is a residual charge that is building up on the ship's hull. We're already trying to  filter it out."

+taps+ Alright keep an eye on the sensors I also want diagnostics ran on the life support every 30 min and send me the results. +taps+ Jade said wanting to make sure everything stayed in working order, +taps+ also stay in constant contact with the damage control teams. +taps+ Jade added she wanted to make sure nothing fell through the cracks if things got busy.

+taps+ "Of course..." replied Coop thinking {Geee, I understand precaution and awarness, but she's such a control freak...} nevertheless he started the requiered diagnostics and also orderd: "Computer, issue an automatic level four diagnostics on life support systems every thirty minutes and report the shortened results." On the console, he connected his temporary terminal for damage control assignments.

While Jade waited for the reports to roll in she continued to monitor the shields they were holding, but the deeper they went into the Grand Banks chances are the storms were going to get worse. She was also running diagnostics on the communication array every fifteen minuets she didn't want to lose contact with the Eagle or the Hermes lost of contact with the Hermes may prove to be fatal.

So far, everything was going smoothly, the first two scheduled diagnostics reported the same state of the life support systems as before so Coop was quite satisfied that it was going all well. Perhaps too well... as it usually is in these situations. Few minutes afte the second life support check came out the hull monitoring sensors reported rapid increase of the electric charge and before he was able to do anything ship rooked slightly as the charge was released in form of large lightning between ship, its shields and the nebula clouds. Copp was now quickly checking the status of all the ship's systems.

Jade felt the ship rock a little, but that was soon becoming natural occurrence, but this one felt different she ran some scans trying to see what felt differently from the other rocking feelings, +taps+ Coop what's going on? +taps+ Jade asked seeing that her scans were showing nothing.

+taps+"I'm not still sure madam, it was some sort of electric discharge...." he paused for a moment as the new analysis appeared. "At first it appeared to be inocculous, so we have just filtered the interferences it was causing, but suddenly it spiked and discharged."

+taps+ Alright how bad was the damage? +taps+ Jade asked.

+taps+"No, I'm afraid, that this was just first of many. It seems to have triggered some sort of cascade reaction with Chimera as epicenter. All around us are electric discharges."

Jade just shook her head hating this mission there was very little they could do about the electrical discharges mainly because they'll attracted to the shields and any electricity running on the hull, +taps+ Alright what do suggest we do to rectify the situation?+taps+ Jade asked knowing that she should come up with a solution, but she had none.

He checked few more things on his console. +taps+"No it poses no threat, the shields will keep it within safe numbers and if we will change the hull polarity the charge won't build up , however the storm we have triggered will limit the sensor range even further." This was bad. Even now as they were, they were flying almost blindly, but now noone is going to be able to say what is... he checked the console again. "We have visibility 100 kilometers ahead, that's the best I can give you. Perhaps we could use class 4 probes to do the sensor sweep ahead of us and relay the data, but in this environmehnt they wouldn't last very long."

+taps+ Alright go ahead and work on changing the hull polarity so we don't have to deal with these surges. As for the probes I'll need to speak to the CO and XO about the idea. +taps+ Jade said thinking that this Specialist would've made a good officer if he wanted to attend officer school she would put in a good word for him.

+taps+"it should take about two to three hours for the disturbance to dissipate."

+taps+ Alright keep me informed of your progress Specialist. +taps+ Jade said running a few more scans on the sensors seeing if there was anything she could do, but it didn't look like there was anything more that she could to.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240904.30 personal Log 2ndLt. Nyx

=/\= Unity Gymnasium =/\=
Mnemosyme was finishing up her workout regimen with some cool down stretches when Joe and Jack approached.  Joe gave her braid a tug as Jack asked if Nym would like to join them for lunch.  She refused as she swatted Joe's hand away and continued with her routine.  She watched the two leave and couldn't help but notice the figure that seemed to follow them like a shadow from the large room.

Nym shook her head.  {I'm just over reacting... its just been so tense lately.   Its my imagination ... I'm seeing ghosts for no reason.}  She finished up the last couple of stretches and then laid on the floor for a few seconds.  She jumped up and then hit the showers.

=/\= Promenade - Golden Palace Cafe =/\=
Nym shook her head as she sat down at one of the tables that was open to the deck she was on.  The only thing golden about this palace was the decorating accents and how you could call a cafeteria styled serving joint a palace was a huge leap of the imagination.  The food smelled good though and if looks were anything to go by it at least was recognizable.  She picked up her fork and scooped up some rice with the beef pepper steak.  {Ok.... the taste is more like something you might find in a palace.}  The beef was melt in you mouth tender and the gravy was savory.

Nym ate in silence for a couple of minutes and then something caught her attention.  It was the woman whom she had a session with that sent her to the gym for a work out.  Mnemosyme sincerely hope that the decorative potted tree that she sat behind hid her from the red head.  {I don't think I could stand another description of how everything shook, body to body part, before the sky started to fall so to speak.}  Her early appointment wasn't the only thing she noticed; there was that dark figure again following a couple of Starfleet officers.  She shook her head again.  {Don't be so suspicious!}  She went back to her lunch thinking {its just the over load of fashion tips I received earlier.}

"Second Lieutenant Nyx, is that you"

Nym stifled the groan as Mrs. Powell arrived at the table.  "Yes, its me," Nym said brightly.

"You are just a gem.  I have felt soo much better since I saw you this morning,"  Mrs. Powell enthused.

"Good, glad I could help."

"Don't be modest.. I was so afraid to leave our temporary quarters this morning that the mister just had to drag me practically kicking a scream to your office."  The young counselor smiled as she took a bite of food since it was obvious that Mrs. Powell was going to continue.  "But your smile was so sweet and the chair was comfortable but your sofa was just the softest thing I've ever sat on.. and oh that tea you served was lovely.. you know I wouldn't have thought a marine would know how to make a cup of tea."

Nym didn't even have a chance to mention that it was really all the replicator before Mrs. Powell continued, "And you were so patient letting me try every seat until I was comfortable.  It was sweet of you to realize that I'd been jostled enough. You know what I mean I told you all about the rumble and how my stomach just seemed to shake my breakfast all up til I almost lost it and how my breasts seem to just jiggle like large bowls of Jell-O and then there was all that dirt and mud and I don't know what all else and then it was just dark.... dark for ages and my new floral print was all ripped and mussed and ..thhat hand bag that I shopped weeks for to get just the right shade of blue .... d...disappeared..."

Nym pushed out the seat across from her so that Mrs. Powell could sit down.  {I wonder how many times I'll have to hear some version of this story before we get to the real issue.}  Nym let the other woman go on as she tried to finish her lunch.

[USS Chimera] SD 240904.30 | Quorum Space | Joint Log, Nicolas Harker & Regina Harker

= Padassa Trading Station - Quorum Space (Romulan Annexed) =

Regina Harker strode briskly down the corridor of the station towards the room where the man she'd come to meet was waiting for her. Though she'd been on the small backwater station many times, she often had trouble navigating her way through the maze-like layout that was common to Quorum architecture.

Though Quorum space was annexed by the Romulans, it remained fairly autonomous in its governance save for the strong presence of the Anx Militia (so named for the militaristic Anxinar species that makes up most of its numbers, a species basically brainwashed by the Tal'Shiar), a group highly loyal to the Romulan Empire of which Regina was once a member. But that was many years ago, before she became disillusioned with the propaganda spread by the Tal'Shiar to keep the Militia in check. So she decided to disappear and join the Anx Rebel Alliance, a group consisting of Anxinar, Quorum races and a strong number of Unificationist Romulans.

Regina's mother, a former Romulan Senator, was one of these Unificationists. Senator Prekata was still in office when she'd met Regina's father, a handsome Starfleet Special Forces major accompanying a Federation delegation to Romulus. They had a brief affair, and when it was over, Major Jonathan Harker returned home to his wife and son, Nicolas. Several years later, shortly after the youngest Harker, Erik, was born, Jonathan was killed in action; he never knew he had a daughter, which was how Prekata preferred it. Still, she gave Regina a human name and taught her as much about human culture as she could before sending her off to a Romulan-run Anxinar school where she spent most of her life until adulthood before returning to the Empire.

Reaching the end of the corridor and her destination, Regina stopped in front of the tall Romulan man that stood in front of the door. "I'm here to see Harker," she told him in a firm tone.

He nodded brusquely and turned a dial on the wall which caused the hexagonally shaped door to swing inwards. She walked into a small antechamber where an armed Romulan was seated at a triangular table and an Anxinar man stood besides a second door. A moment later the door opened and Nicolas Harker stepped out, followed by another Romulan.

"Regina!" he exclaimed as if to an old friend. "Finally, you're here. Please, have a seat."

"I'd rather stand," she said coldly.

"If you insist," Nicolas smiled, a smile that seemed strangely warm. "Shall we get down to business?"

"I got you Summers and the child," Regina said. "They're on the shuttle."

"I know," Nicolas replied. "I had them moved."

Regina felt the blood leave her face, but tried to keep her cool as she glared at her half-brother. "We had a deal. I kept up my end of the bargain, now it's your turn. I want to see my mother."

"You will, in a few minutes," Nicolas said calmly, than gave a quick nod to the Romulan next to him who moved swiftly towards Regina.

She had anticipated some kind of deception; Nicolas may be a Human, but he was just as manipulative and deceiving as any Romulan spy... and criminally insane. Not hesitating, she pressed the button on her chronometer that would transport her back to the shuttle.

But nothing happened.

"Transport inhibitor," Nicolas smiled sweetly, waving his finger in the air. "Besides, there's no one left one your shuttle. Alive, at least."

"We had a deal, Nicolas!" she screamed at him as the two Romulans grabbed her by the arm. "You promised you'd release my mother in exchange for Summers!"

"Oh come now, don't be so," Nicolas chided as he stepped towards her and took her tear-streaked face in his hand. Regina's eyes burned with hatred, but Nicolas looked at her as if they were full of love. "I'm sorry we never had the chance to get to know each other better..."

"Why?" she gasped as she fought against the two men that held her captive.  "What clout do you have with the Tal'Shiar!? You're a mere Human! A Federation traitor at that!"

Nicolas laughed heartily and stepped back, turning away from her. He continued to laugh as if she'd just told him the funniest joke she's ever heard. "I don't work for the Tal'Shiar, Regina. And it's laughable to even think that they work for me... can you imagine, the Tal'Shiar, the greatest intelligence force in the Beta Quadrant, working for me? Hah!"

He grew quiet suddenly, his face somber as he stared towards the wall as if seeing something. "You see, it's the whispers... they tell us what to do. We're all just pawns in their endgame. Blindly devoted pawns..."

Without so much as blinking, Nicolas drew his disruptor in one swift motion and fired the bright green beam. In seconds his sister was vaporised, the suddenness of it sending the two Romulan guards reeling backward with shock. The Anxinar militia man just stood watching the space where a moment ago a beautiful woman had stood.

"Say hello to your mother for me," Nicolas said softly as he slipped the disruptor back into its holster.

[USS Chimera] SD 240904.30 || V'Tar Mission || "Fighter's Descent" ||

[V'Tar III - V'Tar System]

The rocky, barren landscape of V'Tar III looked especially disheartening from space. Despite the concentration of mineral deposits, and the sparse remains of abandoned mining colonies on the surface, the small planet was devoid of life. V'Tar III had been abandoned half a century ago, when the price of titanium dropped drastically. The new, stronger alloy of duranium became easier to produce - driving the demand for the weaker titanium into the ground. Now the onyl sign of life was the tachyon emitter orbitting the deserted planet.

It was a romulan device, based on a Cardassian tactic used during the Dominion War. Cardassians would take a system, and then put up these tachyon emitters - disrupting subspace and preventing warp travel into the system. This device was accomplishing the same task, but with improved Romulan technology. This emitter had an improved singularity power supply, providing twice the range of a cardassian version. It was a stunning piece of defensive technology. Too bad it didn't last much longer.

The sleek form of the USS Yamato decloaked and simultaneously discharged two blue burning charges at the emitter - transphasic torpedoes. The new, experimental, weapons, phased through the shield frequencies and penetrated the emitter's hull erupting it into bright blue flames.

"Captain!" The tactical officer shouted, a deltan male lieutenant. "Disruptor fire of our port bow! A D'deridex class and two of the new scouts designs have decloaked!"

The Yamato shuddered as the fire rocked the ventral starboard shield emitters.

"Boost power to aft shields, cut power to our starboard fore emitters - make it look like they got us." Captain Daniels ordered. He needed to sell it if he wanted them to bite the bait. "Helm, beta-epsilon."

"Aye sir!" The bulky tellarite helm officer responded, taking the magestic ship into a swan dive.

"The scouts are closing in on either side, Captain." The tactical officer reported. "Torpedoes away!"

Captain Timothy Daniels closed his eyes and grit his teeth. Letting his ship get hit by torpedo fire was the hardest thing - especially when that was the one thing a captain most wanted to avoid. The ship shuddered as two blast rocked the galaxy class ship's port nacelle and starbord saucer impulse engine.

"Damage report!" He shouted.

His XO quickly complied. "Impulse down thirty percent. Damage control teams are responsive in the port nacelle. Engineering reports it as being operational."

"Good. Warp us out!"

The Yamato's nacelles flashed, and in an instant the galaxy class ship warped out of V'Tar III's space. It's three pursuers quickly followed her to her next destination: V'Tar VI, where the Yamato and the USS Darkstrom would be waiting in ambush.

Chisulo allowed himself a slight grin. So far, the plan was running smoothly. There was plenty of time however for one to screw up.

"Sir," the communications officer called to the Captain, "Hindenberg is asking for the green light."

Tedros took in a deep breath, and swiveled in his chair toward the Detector's viewscreen. "Wave one is green." He ordered.

Moments later, squadrons of valkries broke out of the Hindenberg's hangarbays on a course out of the asteroid belt where they would warp to V'Tar II. There they would engage the Romulan fleet in orbit, to weaken their defenses for the arrival of the second wave of anti-ship Warhammers and troop carriers. Chisulo ordered the Detector, Hindenberg, and Akira to set course outside of the Asteroid belt to boost their reaction time in case wave found found more trouble than anticipated.  Chisulo stood up under the blue lights and walked toward the back of the bridge where the sitaution table displayed a realtime representation of the beginning battle.

The Valkyries has just dropped out of warp, and green dots appeared all over the holopgraphic map. There were twice as many as intelligence reports had expected. But it didn't make sense? Why would romulus dedicate this many fighters to aplanet where they had wiped clean the popualtion with thalaron weapons? Romulan fighters had been dispatched when the emitter was destroyed - apparently expecting an invasion. Chisulo didn't want to disappoint.

"We're going in early. Wave two, engage!"

*** Exact location unknown ***

Something or someone was gently patting her cheek, so making
an effort to open her eyes, Rangi began to shake off the
induced sleep and soon saw a blurred face close to her own.
The patting stopped and a voice she recognised said:
"Wake up."
The face swam into focus and she saw it give a tentative
smile which widened when she said:
"Martin"

He stepped back as she sat up and swung her legs over the
side of the bed.
" You've been asleep for ages." he said reproachfully.

" Have I?..I'm sorry." she replied, reaching out her arms
which he immediately snuggled into and hugged her back.
"How are you?" she asked after a few seconds. " Let me look
at your head...does it hurt you?"
The bruise was quite large and covered a small lump.
"Only if you poke it." he replied.

"Then I won't." she said and instead leaned forward to plant
a gentle kiss on it which he accepted without complaint.

Rangi glanced around the room.
It was larger than the previous one and was more comfortably
furnished with chairs and table this time as well as twin
beds.
There was also a view port.

She stood up feeling the lead like heaviness of her limbs
quickly wearing off and walked towards it, eager to see
where they were.

"There's nothing outside." Martin said, following her steps.
He was right.

The viewport looked out onto the rich blackness of space
with its multitude of stars but there was nothing in close
proximity.
Rangi leaned forward and looked down, then to left and right
but the only visible thing was the edge of an overhang when
she looked up.
They were, she decided, either on a starbase or a stationary
ship.It was difficult to tell.
There were no spacecraft plying back and forth as was
usually the case with a starbase but the Romulan had told
them they were being taken off the shuttle so that could
have meant merely to a ship.

She turned away and asked: "Has anyone been in here?"

Martin shook his head. " No, nobody."
She looked at him absently, trying to make sense of things.
"Mmmm." she said but Martin had more pressing matters on his
mind.
"I'm hungry." he announced and his demand snapped her away
from her thoughts."There's a replicator." he said running
across the room towards it "...but its too high for me and
you said not to climb on chairs."
He looked back to her with a faint expression of
displeasure, as though she was solely responsible for his
hunger.

"Well you're a very good boy to remember that." she said as
she walked towards him. "...if you had had an accident when
I was till asleep. " She gave him a knowing look and he
nodded.
"Let's have a look at this then. " she said "...what shall
we have this time?" but she wasnt surprised by his choice of
his current favourite.

The spaghetti arrived on a plate with the required cutlery
along with two full glasses. Martin hurried to seat himself
at the table as Rangi carried the meal towards it.

"Where's your dinner?" Martin asked as she set his plate in
front of him.

"I'm not hungry thankyou." Rangi said " I'll just have a
drink."

The little boy began to wind a long strand around his fork.
"Will daddy know we're not at the beach yet?" he asked.

" Yes...he'll know by now. " Rangi replied.

".....and will he be looking for us?" Martin asked but
frowned when the strand untangled itself. He began to rewind
it.

"Oh yes." Rangi answered. " He'll look for us."

Martin managed to get most of the forkload into his mouth
and munched on it, content that all was well then. His daddy
was looking for them and he had no doubt that it was just a
matter of time before he turned up to collect them.

Rangi watched him enjoying his dinner.

{ I have no idea how he will ever find us.} she thought.

[USS Chimera] SD 240904.28. SB Unity. Duty log: Lt. Mercedes carpenter / Scott Fisher DCMO

rangi.summers@mojwap.sk wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

= SB Unity - TF Infirmary =

Mercedes had only arrived on the starbase a few hours ago,
but since the Intelligence Advisor was unable to see her,
she had been told to settle in in her quarters and wait for
the Advisor to contact her. A tour of the station and an
hour later, Mercedes decided she would go to the Infirmary
to see if Rangi was there.
She was unsure if Rangi knew she would be coming. Intel
informed her that an agent had been requested to Unity for a
special medical research project by the 1TF Medical Advisor,
but Mercedes didn't know if Rangi was aware she was that
person.
Eventually she found her way to the Infirmary Reception and
walked through tall glass doors emblazoned with the
Starfleet Medical symbol, almost feeling like she did the
first day she joined the Chimera.
A yeoman at the reception desk looked up as the doors
opened and Mercedes approached her. "Hello, I'm here to see
Advisor Summers?"

The request was met by a pause and then a frown then... " Do
you have an appointment?" the yeoman asked politely. She had
hastily looked down at the terminal and surrepticiously
tapped a couple of buttons that highlighted Rangis
appointment schedule, thinking that even though she was
aware that Rangi wasn't expected in the infirmary for
another four days, there could have been a mistake
somewhere.

"No..." Mercedes hesitated. "But she would know what it's
about. Please tell her Dr Carpenter is here, SSF Medical
Research Intelligence."

"Oh...I'm sorry but the Commander isn't expected in the
hospital today but the deputy CMO is available if that would
be of help to you." The yeoman gave a polite smile.

"Yes, please," Mercedes said, knowing that the Deputy CMO
didn't have the adequate clearance level she needed for
talking about why she was here, but at least he might be
able to tell her how she could get hold of Rangi.

The Yeoman looked pleased. "I'll have someone show you the
way." she said.
It was perhaps ill luck for Mercedes that the 'someone'
turned out to be Sally Schuman but it was she who happened
to be crossing the reception area at that very moment. "
Excuse me...Miss Schuman..." the yeoman said, raising a hand
to attract Sallys attention. " Would you mind showing Dr
Carpenter to the deputy CMOs office please?"

Sally didnt mind at all and came towards the desk speedily.
" Hellooo" she exclaimed when Mercedes turned her head to
see who her escort was to be. " I thought it must be you!
'Sally' I said to myself 'How many Dr Carpenters do you
know? Only the one' I answered and sure enough its you! A
pleasure to meet you again Doctor."
The Yeoman looked from one to the other, well aware of
Sallys exuberant nature and a little unsure as to how the
Doctor would take it.

"Sally," Mercedes smiled. Sally may never have kept her
mouth shut, but her presence in Sickbay always managed to
cheer up the staff and the patients in difficult situations
and Mercedes had missed her. "It's good to see again, it's
been... years. How are you?"

Sally positively beamed a smile back. " Oh I'm fine
thankyou and how are you? Yes its been ages must be three or
four years at least how time flies when there's fun to be
had, not that its all fun ofcourse not in an infirmary and
with the war and all that but as I always say to George...'
what is a day without a laugh in it'. This way please." She
smiled at Mercedes as though to a long lost friend and began
to lead the way along the nearest corridor. The Yeoman
turned away and grinned to herself feeling sympathy for poor
Dr Carpenter.

Mercedes nodded and smiled at the appropriate places and
followed Sally as she lead the way. "Did you ever start
Nurse's Training? I remember you mentioning once that you
really wanted to be a nurse someday."

" Oh yes I did." Sally replied proudly. "Nurse Fleming..you
know Lucy the head nurse of the old Chimera the one that got
lost in the swamp? well the others as well really but thats
the one I always think of. I can't stand the smell of
spinach since the ship went down Strange isnt it but there
you go its all association ofcourse not that the swamp was
Spinach as you know but the smell is similar don't you
think and the texture as well really."
She flashed Mercedes a smile and returned to the question as
though nothing else had derailed her train of thought. "She
put in a very good word for me and you wont believe it, I
know you wont because even George was surprised but I passed
my preliminary nurse's training
and was assigned to the Commodores own ship." She paused
for affect, eyeing Mercedes to see the result. " But for the
time being I'm working in my old capacitiy of med
technician. There's a shortage you know. Whoopsie...nearly
missed the turning! Its along here. "
She turned at almost right angles into another corridor
narrowly missing tripping mercedes up. She sounded the chime
on the closed door, peering for a moment into the opaque
window.
"Come in." a voice called after a moment or two had passed
and Sally opened the door then stood back for Mercedes to go
in.
"Dr Carpenter to see you Dr Fisher." she said.

In reply to what Sally was saying, Mercedes had managed a
simultaneous frown and grin, which gave her a rather
peculiar expression, but it faded as soon as she mentioned
'Dr Fisher'. Last Mercedes heard about Scott, he had just
come out of a coma and was busy recovering from war
injuries, but that was several months ago and they had lost
contact since then.
Granted she didn't know the extent of his injuries, but she
was surprised that he was the Deputy CMO. His resilience was
admirable. Luckily she hadn't broken out into a cold sweat
yet, but as soon as she stepped through the door and she saw
him, she might as well have swallowed her own tongue.

Scott had spent the last few hours working on the final
reports. Twelve autopsies had taken placeon the victims of
the explosion and the reports had to be fully detailed and
then summarised into laymans terms. He hadnt expected a
visitor and so had merely raised his head slightly and
looked up when the door had opened. Nothing had prepared him
for Sallys words and before he could grasp them there she
was in front of him.
" Mercedes." he said quietly and looked at her from where he
sat, thinking that she was as lovely as she had ever
been. Then he got to his feet, a warm welcoming smile
spreading across his face.
" This is a surprise." He rounded the desk and holding out
his hand moved towards her. It was then that he became aware
of Sally still standing by the wall. He glanced at her.
" Thankyou Sally." he said but Sally remained rooted to the
spot transfixed by the events which were unfolding in front
of her. She was aware of the chemistry between these two and
would regale George and anyone else who had interest, again
and again that evening.
When she didnt move Scott repeated his words a little more
firmly. " 'Thankyou' Sally."

"What?oh! yes...thankyou as well." She exited the room and
when the door had closed behind her, Scott turned his
attention to Mercedes.
" Its really good to see you." he said.

"Hmmm," Mercedes said involuntarily as she looked at him
and realised a second too late that the phrase 'it's good to
see you too' had somehow gotten lost in translation between
her brain and her mouth and came out as 'hmmm'.
"Sorry... hello," she quickly countered, but unintentionally
sounded a little offish. "You've been well?" He certainly
looked very well...

Scott wasnt sure exactly what he had expected but it was
definately more than the slightly chilly responce that he
got so, not wanting to bore her with his recent history,
merely nodded and replied. " Yes...I'm fine thanks..and
you?"
He cringed inwardly at his trite reply and when she didnt
reach to shake his proffered hand, he covered the moment by
pointing to a chair which he then grabbed and pulled nearer
the desk. " Take a seat." he said "...Can I get you
something...tea?. coffee?...double chocolate?"

"Green chocolate, please," Mercedes replied firmly as she
sat down, not realising her mistake.

Scott had moved towards the replicator but stopped at her
choice. " Green?" he queried turning back to look at her.
"Green chocolate?"

"Tea!" she quickly replied, horrified that she didn't even
noticed the first time that she'd said 'green chocolate'.
"Tea... please." Mercedes quickly drew a deep breath and sat
up straight. {Drink the tea, ask about Rangi, and then leave
as fast as you can,} she told herself.

"Right." Scott smiled to her and turned away soon occupying
himself in getting her a drink. " Green tea and black
coffee." he ordered and had to wait only a short time before
the steaming cups materialised.
He carried them back to the desk and asked as he set them
down: " So..what brings you to Unity?" He sat down on his
chair and looked across at her and when he thought about it
afterwards, he would decide that it had been a pleasure and
a pain to see her again.

"Thank you," she said, taking the cup and looking at it as
if it was a long lost friend. "An assignment. I'm working
for Medical Research Intelligence now. I've actually come to
see Rangi, but the receptionist said she wouldn't be in for
a few days. Do you know where I can find her?"

Scott took a sip of the strong coffee. He knew Rangis plans
and also knew that something had gone wrong.Obviously
Mercedes didnt have an inckling that Rangi was missing and
it was not up to him to tell her so he said simply:
" She's away for a few days." and then, thinking that he was
sounding unhelpful added: " She, Shane and Martin had
planned a short break to the planet...for a day or so."

"I arrived a few days earlier than scheduled," Mercedes
replied. "Can I contact her on the planet? I don't want to
interrupt her time with her family, but it's rather urgent."

"That could be a bit of a..problem" Scott said and left the
reason unexplained, hoping that Mercedes might assume the
guzman familys time together was very precious and
interruptions had been vetoed unless under the most dire
circumstances.
He drank from his cup again then asked: " Are you staying
here long?"

"It depends on the... assignment. I can't leave until I've
seen Rangi," Mercedes replied evenly. She didn't want to
straight-forwardly tell him that she had to see Rangi
immediately, but she realised her subtle little
reinforcements weren't going to help either. Until she'd
seen either Major Kinn or Rangi, she had no idea why she was
here or even for how long.

Scott watched her sip from her cup, looking at her slender
fingers, the line of her chin, the way her hair shone in the
light and knew that he would give a great deal if he could
turn back time. Things had changed though, months had passed
and they had lost contact with each other even though they
had said they never would. Now she was distant, removed,
almost as though she disliked having to be here drinking
coffee in his office and answering his questions.
He set his cup down. " Is there anything I can help you
with?" he asked.

Mercedes sighed and then smiled disarmingly at him. She
knew him well enough to know he wasn't purposely keeping her
from Rangi; there had to be a good reason why she wasn't
available. "No, but thank you for offering," was all she
said, not wanting to tell him it was 'classified' because
the word almost felt like a wedge that could be driven
between them.

Scott gave a nod as though he accepted her decision." If
you have time on your hands until Rangi gets back, perhaps
you'd like to look around the infirmary?" he suggested. It
was partly a polite and to be expected suggestion but it
also held a personal reason for himself. If she agreed then
he could spend time showing her around, they could perhaps
then get back to something like the easy friendship they
had once enjoyed. He didnt allow himself to think beyond
that.

Mercedes nodded. "Thank you, I'd like that," she replied. "I
hear you've got some state of the art equipment. I might
need to borrow some of it," she added with a mischievous
grin.

"I'm sure that could be arranged." he replied with a lazy
smile that broadened slowly. " Just tell me when you're free
and I'll make sure I'm available.."

[USS Chimera] SD 240904.28 || Away Team Log || Part I ||

[Main Shuttle Bay (Lower Level) - Deck 16 - USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]

The engineering team pulled away from the shuttle as the Captain and the Away Team arrived. Kroitzer's team had been working on depolarizing the hull plating of the USS Serpent, one of the four Type IX personnel shuttles in the Chimera's compliment, and adding insulated armor to protect the tiny vessel from the power of nature at work ion the nebula. Captain Rojac thanked the petty officer in charge of the hasty re-fit, and made a note to compliment Kroitzer on his team's work upon his return to the ship.

"Captain Xerxes," Rojac said as the group of five approached the hatchway in the back, "you are the best pilot among us, take the helm. Lieutenant Jardan, fill in at the operations and navigation console and maintain a constant link with the bridge."

Anya nodded her acknowledgment {Plus I doubt anyone else knows that much about Erassian Carrier Landing procedures.}

Jardan took a seat at operations and opened a channel to the Chimera. " Aye, sir."

Rojac let the two officers file into the small craft before him, and he put a hand on Athena's shoulder as she approached. "Is everything okay, Commander?" He asked.

"Yes, sir." Athena replied, rather hestiantly. "I'm a little nervous about the storm, but otherwise I am prepared."

"Good." Rojac nodded. "Viktor seemed a little weary of a negotiation with Starfleet while we talked on the Bridge earlier. He is still upset with the Federation's interpretation of the Narendra Event. How can I best approach these negotiations and put that dispute behind us?"

"Carefully, sir." She responded. "He's likely to be sceptical of the Federation. You will have to make quite a compromise to get his fleet on your side. You should probably play to your old friendships." The Captain nodded.

Anya grinned and thought of another method which would work but it was unlikely it would be approved for use. "Two lit and all systems green.  We're good to go Captain."

Tommy listened to the earpiece and turned to Rojac." Sir, bridge says we are clear to launch. Ready to set course."

Rojac took his seat between Commander Wellington and Lieutenant JG Adams of Security and strapped himself in. "Then lets get going. But make it quick, Anya, I don't want to be out in the middle of this hell hole for too long."

"Trust me Sir this isn't a hell hole area of the Grand Banks nor even of the straights, in fact the crossroads where we currently are is actually quite a popular tourist destination."  Anya said as she lifted off out of the shuttle bay.  The shuttle shook violently as it was struck by a bolt of lightning.  "See shields only dropped fifteen percent...elsewhere we'd be calling you Crispin right about now."

Anya opened a comm channel on a frequency she had pre-loaded into the shuttle.  "Hermes ATC this is Stormchild.  Request permission and instructions to drop a Polished Turd in the Car Park."  She saw the saw the response from a hologramatic display of symbols near the entrance to the top flight deck of the Hermes giving her an approach vector and a designated parking bay.  This was essentially the more advanced Erassian version of 'call the ball' although encoded so only Erassian pilots were likely to understand.

Anya called to the back of the shuttle "Heading in on an approach vector now.  We'll be on solid ground in under 120 seconds."

Shaken a little from the blast Rojac replied with more than a slight bit of exasperation, "Thank god."

As promised, the trip to the EAS Hermes was quick - and thankfully - uneventful. Within the stated time frame, Anya Xerxes arrived at the "Car Park" and deftly maneuvered the "Polished Turd" to its designated space. By the looks of it, a delegation had already assembled to receive them. As Jardan and Xerxes completed the docking procedures, Rojac stood erect and straightened his jacket. After everyone was ready, he nodded to Jardan to open the hatch.

Armed soldiers in crisp blue and starched uniforms stood at attention as Rojac stepped out of the hatch and onto the deck plating. One stepped forward with his hands held tightly behind his back. "Captain Rojac, welcome aboard the EAS Hermes. General Ivanov and Colonel Anios are awaiting you in the conference room."

"Then lets get to it. Lead away." Rojac responded, following his leaders to said conference room. It was customary, usually, for the Commanding Officer of a ship to greet an arriving dignitary. Rojac was not surprised at the change in decorum. Often times in diplomatic negotiations one would alter - or ignore - custom in order to throw the other party off-guard, or send a message. Rojac suspected the latter as he follwed the backs of the Erassian soldiers to the turbolift; a message that the Erassians weren't too fond of Federation courtesy as of late either. Rojac hoped to change that.

[USS Chimera] ||SB 234: UNITY|| SD 240904.28, Joint Duty Log, Commodore Shane Guzman & Rear Admiral Leland Jefferson (npc)

"shane.guzman@mojwap.sk" <shane.guzman@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=Joint Defense Command=
=San Francisco, Earth=

Moments after Captain Rodgers walked out of Leland's office,
Jefferson's aide, Lieutenant Mandolin's voice could be heard
over the admiral's intraoffice comm. system

"Admiral Jefferson, we have an open, secure line to
Commodore Guzman's office on Starbase UNITY."

"Very good. I'll take it from here."

"Aye, sir," the lieutenant replied.

Jefferson patiently awaited for Shane's image to appear on
his computer screen.

Getting a call from JDC Command on Earth, Shane expected yet
another meeting to be held. It was nice that he had not to
travel to Earth every time a meeting was held, taking part
via a secure video channel was a great thing, but to be
honest, sometimes Shane was really tired of all those
meeting stuff. It almost looked like that the high admirals
on Earth had far too much free time and little real work …
But this time Shane was surprised to see only Admiral
Jefferson on the other end of the screen.

He was still waiting for any news from Terek about the
kidnapper's ship or for a message from the kidnapper (or
Tal'shiar) telling him conditions of return of Rangi and
Martin. He did his best to hide his own fears and hoped
Jefferson will not notice.

"Commodore Guzman, it's good to see you again," Jefferson
said, leaning a bit forward.

"Admiral Jefferson" Shane replied, "the pleasure is
mine. I thought there is a command meeting to attend, but
obviously I am wrong. What can I do for you, sir?"

"I'll get to the point," the admiral said. "I know that it
has been quite sometime since Colonel PontBrillant was
pulled from his duties as your XO, but I've finally found a
replacement. Someone to take some of the pressure off your
shoulders."

Taken by surprise, Shane only nodded: "It's true that
the Colonel is dearly missed here, his experience and
abilities were of great help to me and the Task Force. A
replacement would do very well, whom do you have in mind,
sir?"

"I believe you're familiar with him. Captain Trent
Rodgers. His brother serves as an engineer under your
command."

Shane nodded again. "Aye, we met a few times with the
Captain. He was head of federation council security before
the war and then a ship's CO serving in this sector. But I
believe his ship was destroyed or badly damaged …"

"Destroyed about a month or so ago," the admiral said. "More
than half of the crew survived. Anyhow, what do you think
about him, Commodore?"

"To be honest, sir, I don't know Captain Rodgers well
enough to judge his abilities or experience. I don't want
to say that I do not trust your judgment here, but unless I
am mistaken, Captain Rodgers isn't enlisted in Special
Forces, is he?"

"Not officially, but he does have an impressive security and
tactical background. He's been in a few covert ops in the
past, so he should be able to fit in well in the SSF."

"I think very high about the Captain's brother –
Commander Rick Rodgers, he's an excellent officer and I
know him since both of us served on the Chimera under
General Bretam's command. He's very fond of his brother
and your trust in him ensures Captain Rodger's value, but
I would really prefer to choose an XO by myself"

'The captain doesn't want the job and the commodore doesn't
seem to want him,' the admiral thought as he smiled.

"I understand, and under normal circumstances, I'd be OK
with that. But you've been without an XO for a few weeks now
and have made no inroads in a replacement. Your task force
is critical to our war efforts and having such a key vacancy
on your staff is ..." Leland's smile disappeared.
"...unacceptable. Now, if you have an XO in mind, then by
all means, I'll fill out the proper paperwork and make it
happen. Do you have an XO in mind, Commodore?"

There was no other way then to say the truth: "No, I have
not, sir. It's hard to find a suitable replacement
now-a-days. Even harder when every other week some of my
senior staff is transferred out of the UNITY"

"Then be expecting Captain Rodgers and myself in a couple of
days," Leland said.

Shane raised an eyebrow … in a fashion learned from
Lieutenant Oriana long years ago. "Expecting you as well,
Admiral?"

"I'm making a long overdue visit to UNITY, Commodore,"
Leland said.

Shane sighed in his mind. With all the troubles of late and
failing security on UNITY, the last thing he needed was
JDC's second in command roaming his station. "Of course,
sir" he said after the slightest of a pause, "I look
forward to welcome you on the UNITY."

"I'll see you in two days. Jefferson out."

As the channel closed, Shane leaned back in his arm chair
with a heavy sigh. {Why did I deserve this?} he asked
himself. But no matter the reasons, Shane had to fill some
of the empty seats in his staff very soon. He tapped his

====== Somewhere on Aeran ======

Shane was holding a little comm. Badge in his hand, staring
blank at it, obviously deep in thought. They've found the
badge immediately after beaming down. Knowing their
business, all twelve ODA soldiers proceeded to secure the
area. Shane was clever enough to stay out of their way,
waiting for the ODA Lieutenant to do his job.

The area was secured quickly. Half of the troop covered the
area with their weapons while Engineering and Science
specialists scanned the environment. Performing a wide
variety of scans, the ODA 1LT was soon able to report the
area as secure. There were mo hidden explosives, no enemy or
any other sort of trap present. Just the badge.

The badge was scanned carefully as well. It was confirmed to
be genuine SSF badge, carrying personal ID of Commander
Summers. If it was the original … or a duplicate, could
not be said. There were no other DNA fragments besides
Rangi's present on the badge. Since the badge was a
relatively simple item, all that could be found out was the
fact that the last message was send to Commodore Guzman and
that it was relayed from a remote source. Origin of the
source could not be identified. The ODA guys continued to
scan the area for more clues, but it was obvious that there
was just nothing more to find.

Turning the badge a few times in his hand, Shane realized
that there was something wrong in play. But to find out
more, Shane needed help. Turning to the ODA Leader, he said:
"Lieutenant, please finish scanning this area and then
return to UNTITY"

When the Lieutenant nodded, Shane tapped his badge:

+TAPS+ Guzman to UNITY. One to beam up +

====== Task Force operations centre, SB 234:
UNITY ======

"No trace of Rangi, little Michal or Major Liev on
Aeran" Terek replied. Of course, it was not possible to
scan directly for them, but Terek made his scans for several
distinct alternatives. First was Liev's badge, other was a
couple of a human woman with a human child with the
respective ages of Rangi and Martin … but none brought any
success. Local militia on Aeran had no evidence about the
three of the eighter, there was no evidence that they even
made it down to Aeran.

The case was now beginning to clear. Rangi and Martin,
presumably Major Liev as well, were kidnapped by force in
the civilian transporter room. The kidnapper killed the
transporter chief and beamed them all to presumably a hidden
ship. The coordinates where the ship was presumed to be were
scanned by a fighter wing, but were found empty. The ship
was most probably using a cloak to hide itself. The question
now was if the ship was still somewhere nearby, waiting for
whatever … or if it already left the Aeran system.

This part was an interesting one. UNITY and Aeran system
were of a great tactical value for Starfleet and since
Romulans were using cloak all the times, the whole system
(and UNITY specially) was protected by a dense tachyon
detection grid. For capital ships it was nearly impossible
to creep undetected to UNITY … but a smaller vessel could
do it, but it would need a hell of a pilot … or very
actual plans of the tachyon grid … alongside with SSF
access codes.

Starting to get paranoid again, Shane immediately suspected
the Romulan … Tal'shiar to be precise. It was the threat
of Tal'shiar that made Shane sending Rangi to the Chimera
and Martin to Rise not so long ago. Intel suggested that
Tal'shiar gave the hunt up … but today proved that
information wrong.

"Can you, please, have a look who accessed information
about the tachyon grid in the last 2 weeks or so?" Shane
asked.

Terek sighed: "Sure I could, but I presume there will be
hundreds of accesses … with all the traffic in this
system"

Shane nodded: "Do it anyway, Terek"

====== 1 hour later ======

Called by Terek, Shane immediately came back to the TF OPS
centre. Terek seemed to be a bit tired and somewhat puzzled.
"What's up?" Shane asked.

"Well, there were a total of 986 accesses in the last 14
days. Most by the operations and tactical staff on UNITY.
Some 23 were a bit suspicious, so I isolated them for
further analysis, but I've found something weird"

Shane remained silent, waiting for Terek to continue.

"It's Major Varis Liev. He accessed information about
the grid three times … and to an extensive amount" Terek
said. Once again, Special Forces (somewhat paranoic and VERY
data storage place consuming) all-what-you-do logging proved
its value.

Shane shrugged: "Hmm … he might needed it for some JAG
work or something. What's weird about that?"

Terek smiled. "Let's presume that that time of the
explosion in the civilian area was the time of kidnapping. I
compared the time of kidnapping with the time of last access
of Major Liev to the requested information … and it was
FIVE minutes afterwards. Not even from the UNITY … the
access was logged as remote and the relay station that took
it up is in the range of the last transport coordinates from
the civilian transporters."

"Damn good work, Terek" Shane said. "That means that
the enemy captured the Major as well and it's using his
codes … taken by force most probably, to get through our
sensor network."

Terek nodded back: "But no more … since you locked the
codes as well as Rangi's ones."

"Any info about the ship the kidnapper is using?" Shane
asked.

"None so far" was the reply, "but I am not yet done
with searching …"

"Go on … please"

Nanee was completing radiation preparations.  Everything would be good to go as planned.  She was happy to see that the medical officers in this Sickbay were eager to complete the necessary checks.  After all, they had a dead line.  The readings on all the machinery and proper medications would be needed to be dealt with the CMO and the CO would need to be notified of their progress.

Nanee also noticed after taking a break to sit at her desk a moment that some people's physicals weren't all the way completed or for some new crew weren't done at all.  She would need to send them notifications letting them know they would need to come in.  She didn't want to have to work on a patient who had radiation poisoning, but didn't have an updated file.  It would just take up to much of everyone's time.

She sometimes wished that more people would have respect for the Medical and Counseling aspects of the ship.  She knew that all the departments were equally important, but when it comes down to people's health, Nanee was under the impression that people thought they could "hold it off".  True she didn't want every ol' Joe who had a slight headache to walk in, but she knew, from dealing with her cousin, MaiKai, that some people would go to any lengths not to go see a doctor for instance an infection or broken bones.  That was one thing that Nanee would never get.  Why people would put off their own health.  They have to know it only affects the ways they perform their job.

Nanee just sighed as she stood up.  She would need to replicate a nice vanilla latte if she was going to be expected to turn in her daily report of events to the CMO.

[USS Chimera] SD 240904.27 | SB Unity | Personal Log, Lt Carpenter (MRI)

= SB Unity - 1TF Transporter Facilities =

Lieutenant Mercedes Carpenter stepped off the transporter pad onto the starbase and looked around her. The transporter room was like any other 6-person transporter room in Starfleet; there was maybe a slight difference in layout, but all in all, most transporter rooms tended to look alike. The only way to tell them apart was the era in which they were built, and from the style of this one, it was fairly up-to-date and state of the art.

Mercedes had done a lot of travelling around the Federation the last few months, and she was still decided where she was happy with it or not. In fact, being back in Starfleet wasn't much of a choice for her. She was happy living her life, retired from Starfleet, as a xenophysiology specialist at a public hospital on Luna, but when the war with the Romulans broke out, Starfleet basically "drafted" her; and since there were no real medical grounds on which she could object, she found herself back in uniform again the next week.

But, this time around things were different and not as bad as Mercedes had expected they would be. Perhaps she'd also grown up a little more over the years and learned to handle situations better. Being Chimera's CMO was a stressful position, being on the front lines all the time in dangerous situations and being responsible for the survival of a crew of over 1,000... It was just too much.

Her new position was quite different, however. She was recruited back into SSF Medical, but assigned to the Department of Medical Research Intelligence, a joint sub-department of Medical and Intelligence. She would become an agent of the department, travelling to wherever the SSF needed sensitive or classified medical information analysed. At first she hadn't expected to do well in the position, but after she completed her brief field training she was soon promoted to senior agent and found the work fulfilling for the most part. Besides the travelling which she didn't like, her work had a strong investigative and scientific slant to it that she found very satisfying. And there were at least no triage situations which required her to delegate six cargo bays full of injured marines between three AMO's.

"Dr Carpenter?" an enlisted crewman wearing a red uniform greeted her, his voice pulling her from her thoughts.

"Yes, that's me," she nodded and held out her hand towards him. "Mercedes Carpenter, Medical Research Intelligence." The title didn't sound as strange to her ears anymore as when she first started using it.

"Major Kinn regrets she's unable to meet you herself; she has urgent business to attend to," he conveyed. "In the meantime, I can give you a quick tour of the starbase and show you to your quarters?"

Mercedes nodded. "That would be nice, thank you."

She followed the yeoman out of the transporter room and down a generic looking corridor until they came to a plaza, areas of the starbase where decks intersected via walkways and escalators. Walking closer to the rail, she looked up and could see at least ten decks up through the oval cutaways in the centre of the deck plaza and she realized just how vast the starbase was.

::Looks up at the Report #::

Hmmm.... I sense a disturbance in the force... OOPS! Wrong sci-fi behemoth!

But seriously, the Chimera is approaching her 300th week of simming excellence! Congratulations! Now I'm not saying that four ships in 300 weeks is a good record, but we've put out some quality logs over the years. Thanks for being a part of it all.

This week. The AT arrives at the Hermes and negotiations begin. Hopefully that means we'll be Rommie hunting soon.

NOTE: If you can't log, ask for an "E".  I feel bad typing 0's next to good simmers.

- Summary (by Ixus and Rangi)
-------------------------

= Chimera Summary = (Ixus)

The week kicks off with the arrival of the Chimera at the Grand Banks.  Gustav preps the ship for the volatile Grand Banks.  Nanee and Pamela chat.  Chimera meets up with the EAS Hermes and negotiations are arranged.

= UNITY Summary = (Rangi)

Following his nightmare, Maikai found Rick sitting in the corner of the bedroom. He still could not bring himself to explain what had happened to him in the past. Rick's brother Trent Rodgers had been thinking over the loss of the Lancelot when he was called to Admiral Leland Jefferson's office. There he received orders which astounded him....he was to take the XO position on SB Unity.

Jo told rick he looked unwell but he passed the comment off and took a small pleasure from the fact that work was progressing in the shipyard, albeit slowly.

Shane and Legrand argued over the jurisdiction concerning some recently captured pirates but eventually Shane was free to, as he thought, join Rangi and Martin on their mini-holiday for as yet he had no knowledge of the explosion in the transporter room. He listened to Rangi message but dismissed what she hoped had been a warning that all was not well.He was about to beam down to the planet when Pakosii contacted him to tell him about the events. He and his bodyguard hurried to the scene where he learned that the transporter chief had been shot at close range by a phaser. Shane asked Terek for help in tracking the last records of transports who was able to determine the last coordinates were in empty space.Shane also learned that Major Liev had been in the transporter room with Rangi and Martin. Shane called for two ODA teams to search for the missing trio on the planet and despite opposition, insisted that he was going to accompany them.

Meanwhile, Rangi and Martin had suffered at the hands of their captors before being sedated and moved from the shuttle to an unknown StarBase.

Logging:
The weekly logging deadline is at Midnight (12:00AM/00:00) GMT/UTC (19:00 EST); all logs received after the deadline will be counted for the following week. If you are pressed for time and would like a log to count for the previous week, but it is sent after the deadline, please send an email to the command team when you send the log so that we can make the corrections.
Please remember that all MAJOR plot changes need to be cleared with the command staff before a log goes through! You can do this by sending the command staff (chimera-command@ucip.org ) a log labeled with "Draft" tagged to the subject line. We'll typically let you know if it's approved within 24 to 48 hours, or tell you what might need to be modified before it's sent to the listserv.
When using other characters in your logs, please keep in mind that person's characteristics. Character information can be found on the UCIP website or the USS Chimera website (under CREW - just click on the Star Trek symbol next to the character's name). If you're still unsure how to interact with a character, then privately mail the person
involved, and I'm sure they'll be willing to help.
Conversely, if you feel that your character is being portrayed incorrectly by someone please contact them to try to work out an agreeable solution. Just keep in mind when logging to treat other characters the way you'd like them to treat you - with the respect due to any member of Starfleet who is a specialist in their field.
If you think your log may be going out of bounds, then please ask! If you are having problems finding things to write about or would just like some help with your log, please contact your department head or the command team. Remember, you don't always have to log about things relating to the main plot - logs that develop your character's
personality are encouraged! We're eager to help if you're having trouble; just email the command team (chimera-command@ucip.org).
