*** Observation Bay * Main Hospital * SB Unity ***
He had sat there waiting for some time, yet was not bothered
by the wait and would in fact have not been annoyed if his
visit had been in vain for he had no problem in spending his
time in this manner.
The viewport looked towards the planet but with scope of the
space beyond and although the scene could be observed from
many places on the base, it was one that Stephen enjoyed.
So he sat back in the reclining chair, totally relaxed and
unconcerned that his working day was ticking away and even
when the person he planned to meet eventually entered the
bay, Stephen merely gave him a short glance then returned to
the view with no sign of a greeting.
Richard Cortez limped into the room with as much authority
as he could muster.
He was wearing the standard issue robes that every sick
person in sickbay received and it seemed as if every part of
his body ached for some reason or another but he did his
best to pretend he was perfectly healthy even though he knew
nobody cared.
In reality he was unable to do much besides walk slowly and
even the smallest of tasks caused him much effort, to the
point that he wondered if Summers had given him a faulty
pair of lungs and screwed up the operation.
It had taken quite a bit of strength to walk even this far
and once he reached the view-port he paused to catch his
breath contemplating how to best convince the Nurse back in
sickbay to give him a few extra pain pills and authorize him
fit for duty.
Stephen turned his head a little and watched Cortez, noting
the mans laboured breathing and slight tremour in his
clenched hand as though he sort to control himself but was
finding it hard to do so.
He said nothing expecting Cortez to notice him, for there
are few people who cannot 'feel' themselves being watched.
" Good view." he said looking out at it again himself.
Richard turned his head at the comment, suddenly noticing
the man sitting down in one of the several chairs pointed
towards
the viewport.
"I've seen better", he responded leaning on the hand rail
surrounding the area.
Stephen made no responce to the comment but instead busied
himself by unfastening the battered rucksack on the seat
beside him, dragging it onto his knee and delving deep into
an outer pocket from which he produced a small silver flask.
He dumped the rucksack to one side, unscrewed the top of the
flask and took a swig from the contents, savouring the
taste.
Richard took as deep a breath as he could and glanced back
at the stranger as he drank from his flask. He smiled, took
a
couple steps back and sat down in the chair where the mans
sack once lay.
"But it is a good view", he added resting his limbs on the
armrests.
Stephen swallowed, nodded his head in agreement and raised
the flask to his lips again taking a smaller sip this time.
He enjoyed it as before and rested his hand holding the
flask on his knee.
After a few seconds he glanced at Cortez and lifting the
flask gestured that he might share a sip or two if he
wished.
Cortez looked over at the man and cocked his head to the
side.
"Thanks", he said taking the flask from his hands and
downing a decent sized swig.
"Whiskey" he said after swallowing. "Not that synthesized
shit either", he added wiping the drops from his chin with
his wrist.
Reaching out his left arm he handed the container back to
the stranger and then offered his right hand, "I'm Richard".
"Stephen." he replied shaking Cortez hand firmly.
"I dont do synthesized." he added "...waste of mans taste
buds."
He watched a shuttle travel right to left across the view
then asked " Been here long?" although he didnt look at
Cortez as he spoke.
Cortez couldn't help but laugh at the question almost
coughing. He took another breath and paused,
"I don't know" he finally said. "I think its been a week or
more....but it feels like only a day or two".
As he said that he turned his head back towards Stephen.
"How about you?", he added.
" I'm often in here." Stephen replied and nodding his head
towards the planet added: " That beats the clinical places."
he glanced at Cortez "...even if the nurses add an
attraction of their own."
He gave a slow smile as he said it and for the first time
was able to study Cortez face for a second or two.
The Major smiled, thinking about Natalie, the nurse who had
attended to him, "yeah", he chuckled. "It seems as thought
its
mandatory for nurses to be pretty", he added rolling his
head back towards the view.
"Never had time for any of that though...", he finally said
after a few moments of silence. "So what are you doing
here....you don't look sick or anything". he added.
"Physically you cannot hope to meet a finer specimen."
Stephen said and chuckled at the ridiculous statement then
changing his tone added: " I talk to counselors quite a
bit."
"Well then you have my pity", Richard responded. "I've
never met a more self involved pious bunch than the people
who call
themselves counselors".
He shook his head at the comment. "Its hard to believe in
this day and age when we are in the middle of a war they
still let people sit in chairs all day and talk....we should
give em a rifle and send em off to the front if you ask me".
"You have a point." Stephen replied although which point he
agreed with was not stated. He lifted the flask but paused,
lowered it and giving Cortez a sideways glance said:
" Shouldnt drink too much of this."
He lifted the flask, took a longer swig and grimaced as it
bit home.
Wordlessly he offered it to Cortez.
