====== Rangi & Shane's quarters, SB 234: UNITY
======

It was dark in the spacious quarters. Rangi was not here,
called by some medical emergency. Little Martin was in his
bed sleeping. Shane, clad in a bed dress himself was sitting
in a soft armchair, looking blank in the darkness.

He was thinking about his son and all the dangers that were
lurking on the little boy on this station. It was not that
easy to say that life in deep space was dangerous and that
thousands of other little boys and their parents lived
there. Martin was on board a Special Forces Task Force
Command Station, near to enemy borders in a time of war. SB
234 … UNTIY, was the ideal target for any massive Romulan
attack and that raised the danger level for anyone on board
considerably.

Shane feared that one day, his son could be injured … even
killed. A young and innocent life … terminated cause the
incompetence of adults to deal with their problems in
civilized manners. A victim of wicked politicians and
bloodthirsty military commanders and their evil plots and
games. It was not just an usual fear for someone's safety
… but it was a deep and freezing fear that bounded
Shane's arms and legs and filled his mind with doubt and
desperation. He felt that this fear was overwhelming him and
lessening his abilities to command.

When Rangi's and his own safety was concerned, Shane was
always sure that he would always put the interest of his
crew and ship forward, but he was no longer sure if a
Romulan assassin would hold a knife to his son's throath
and demand lowering UNITY's shields … that he could bear
to watch his son to die …

His dark thoughts were interrupted by a call from
Operations.

"Commodore, I am sorry to disturb you in this late hour,
but you ask to e notified when the Chimera will arrive. She
docked on platform C one minute ago"

+TAPS+ Thank you for informing me. Please contact Captain
Cropa Rojac and inform him about Chimera's arrival. I am
sure he can't wait to get on board his own ship again +

"I understand, sir" came the reply.

{Chimera – C} Shane thought, {the 4th ship bearing that
name in less then 10 years. One could think that serving on
board a Chimera means a short career} With some black
humour, Shane realized that there was just a single
Chimera's CO who did not loose his ship. It was Commander
Ohmsford, but maybe it was only thank to the short time he
was in command. Bretam lost the original Intrepid class
Chimera, Shane's lost the Katana class Chimera – A and
Rojac's lost the Chimera class Chimera – B. What faith
will meet Centaury class Chimera – C?

Terek walked alongside of Shane. He didn't see him after the
meeting until now. Understandably he was probably really
busy: "I've done a perliminary system scans and the two
dilithium deposits doesn't look so small as they did. The
long range sensors tracked them to the third asteroid belt
on the far side of the system. Although it won't be easy to
get to them. The asteroid belt has been formed in the
earlier stages of the system and is composed not only by ore
rocks, but also a frozen methane, hydrogen and even small
portion of water. And the size of those things is really
amazing. I reallly hope that Qashqai has a good pilot." he
looked at Shane "I'm not sitting behind the conn console
again any time soon."

Shane had to laugh: "Don't look at me Weranis. I am not
going anywhere any time soon and surely not piloting ... not
even my own ship. But if you're looking for a good pilot,
hunt down Marine Captain Xerxes and ask her to pilot the
Qashqai. She's a little bit weird, but knows her trade. By
the way ... please don't forget the mining colony on Aeran
III, we need as much of their resources as possible."

"Aye, we'll stop there on our way back and will try to
negotiate some sort of deal for us. We can also send
salvage teams to the chimera's place of demise."

Shane nodded: "Good idea. The battle field is still full
of debris both from Romulan as well as Erassian and
Federation ships. Most of the debris is of little value, but
you might encounter some nice pieces there. Just be carefull
not to run into any forgotten mine or something ... "

Thinking so hard that his forehead wrinkled and sort of
melted with his naturally wrinkled nose, which gave him a
bit gloomy expression, Terek said: "Well, we could probably
launch a few probes on our way to the asteroid belts and
pick up the results later for risk assessment and possible
benefits. If the probes will pick up anything usefull, we
can drop by on our way back to Unity." At first exploring
the debris field of Chimera seemed like a good idea, but now
Terek realized that it would probably be a bigger deal for
the crew of the Qashqai then he originally thought. He
himself won't feel good being there. Still this had to be
done because if they won't take the advantage of the
resources then someone else may and if there are supposed to
be scavengers, it'd better be them.

Scratching his chin, Shane said: "Back to your request
about personnel. To be honest, SSF Command has little
personnel to dispatch here and both Bretam and Kira are
quite reluctant to sign transfers here. But ..." Shane
smiled, "we have still a lot of Starfleet personnel here
from all the destroyed ships and most of them wait for their
next assignment. If you can find suitable guys for your
department among them, get them to me and I sign their new
assignment immediately. Just remember that you can have only
SSF personnel .. not regular Starfleet ones."

"Yeah, that might be a little problem. The computer can of
course sort out the 'undesirable' ones, but I'm afraid that
will leave us with very few people. What would you say about
for example civilians with proper clearance?" Shane gave him
a suspicious look, but Terek didn't let him start the
sentence he was surely about to say. "I know what you want
to say. That this is SSF and not regular Starfleet or even
civilian installation, but well there are civilian and
Starfleet facilities and areas here aren't there? And I know
for sure that USS Calacirya had on board couple of brilliant
scientific minds. Experts in astrogeology and spatial
topography and even one xenoanthropologist."

Shrugging his shoulders Shane replied: "I am not against
this idea, but please remember that we are Special Forces
and in war. The last thing we need are a couple of civilian
whinnies or Romulan agents. I say it directly, I'll ask
Joeleco to clear all SB 234 personell, so be careful whom to
ask. To be honest, I would prefer SSF personnel, but when
needed ask your civilians, but be carefull what you say and
to whom please …"

Frowning, he replied: "Yes, I'll talk to them first and see
if they would be interested. And yes, I would be careful not
to mention anything clasified..."

Nodding, Shane said: "OK then. Now please excuse me, I
have some other things to attend. I hope that you will like
the UNITY as much as Chimera."

[USS Chimera] SD 240811.30 | USS Chimera | Joint Log CEO LtCmdr Curtis Scardona and Capt Cropa Rojac

Gorno <gornographer2000@yahoo.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

[SB 234: UNITY]

Sitting in the short range shuttle, luggage on his lap, newly recommissioned Lt. Commander Curtis Scardona could only shake his head. Damn them, he thought. Damn them and their dirty tricks. Command had roped him back into service, without so much as a second thought. After all he had given the fleet, they still treated him like a service number, instead of a person.

He stood up inside the cramped shuttle, straightening his uniform. At least they assigned him to a ship which was commanded by someone relatively familiar. He had served with Cropa Rojac a few years before he resigned his commission. Curtis remembered him as being an extremely competent officer, so he knew that the bearded man would run a tight ship...if he still had a beard. He smirked a bit at the thought.

When the shuttle docked at UNITY, Curtis made his through the familiar airlocks and out into the bustling station. After a liason officer showed him to his temporary quarters, Curtis relaxed. He knew he should probably report in, and then suddenly realized that Command didn't tell him where exactly his commanding officer would be before taking the new Chimera as his own. He sighed, slowly making his way over to a communication console. He would notify Command of his arrival, and then they would re-route the message to wherever his new Captain was.

"Computer, send message to Command, LtCmdr Curtis Scardona reporting for duty as Chief Enginner, USS Chimera C...encrypt and send."

The console beeped and then Curtis sank into the chair, bringing up some more specs of a ship which he already knew like the back of his hand.

Cropa's computer in his temporary quarters chimed to signal the incoming message. In his restroom, the Captain put his beard trimmer along the sinks edge and wiped a few stray strands from around his lips. He crossed the small room and hit the command to accept the transmission. He smirked as he saw the message, and reached over to his combadge resting on the tabletop.

"Rojac to Scardona."

Scardona jumped in his chair, not expecting the captain to get back to him so quickly. He tapped the console to answer.

"Scardona here, sir. Wasn't sure if you were on board the station or not, but it appears my question's been answered."

"Glad to see you made it. Can you meet me for lunch at 1300. The chinese restaurant in section 324 is pretty good, as I don't have an office aboard this station." Rojac spoke into the device palmed tightly in his hand.

Curtis rubbed his chin, suddenly realizing that he was pretty hungry. Chinese food sounded great.

"Sounds like a plan, sir. Section 324 at 1300."

"Good. Rojac out." And then he crossed back to the bathroom to finish getting ready.

[Ying's Asian Cuisine - Section 324 - Main Promenade - SB 234: UNITY]

Curtis wandered into the relatively large asian restaurant at 1300, mildly surprised at how authentic the food smelled. A small smirk played over his face, taking in the scene. Deep down in his consciousness, he missed this. He found a small table in the corner and sat, perusing the menu for something interesting.

Rojac arrived across from him and placed his satchel on the floor before taking is seat. "They have a good Peking Duck." Rojac said. "The hoison sauce is a little bland for a traditional tongue, but most sentients wouldn't notice." Rojac smirked. "Good to see you again, Commander." Rojac reached across the table and offered a hand.

Curtis stood and shook the offered hand, consciously aware of the hand he was using. His right arm was entirely cybernetic, and he hoped that it at least felt like flesh and blood to others. He smiled and sat with his superior officer.

"Likewise, Captain. It's been a while. Actually, I had found myself in the mood for some dumplings. It's been a good long while since I've had those.

The waiter came and they placed their orders. When the young lady walked away ROjac reached into his bag and pulled out a padd with the Chimera's new specifications, fresh from Ohmsford's latest report. "Here's the Chimera's latest stats. I've sent your new Deputy, an excellent young Junior Grade Lieutenant named Gustav Kroitzer, to help in the final production. So far, he's improved the efficiency of the warp drive by close to 15%."

Curtis took the PADD in hand, and skimmed over the latest information from the ships test flights. It was impressive work. And Rojac wasn't joking about the deputy. Some of the algorithms used to increase efficiency were extremely clever.

"This is impressive work. I think Mr. Kroitzer may be on to something here. With a little more time to work, I think we can increase efficiency even more."

The numbers were flying though his head, possibilities whizzing about in his conscious mind. There were certainly a lot of variables, the least of which was the fact that much of the new equipment had barely been tested. But Scardona was confident he could come through with this one.

"The Century Class is a little bigger than the Dark Horizon was, but I think you can manage." Rojac said.

Scardona smiled at that. He had broken into the fleet with the Whitestar, flagship of Captain Ian Korin. It was still the largest ship he had ever served on, even after all this time. His eyebrows rose playfully.

"I think we'll be Ok. After all, it's not the size of a ship that matters, is it, Captain?"

Rojac laughed heartily at that one. "No, I guess not. Or else I wouldn't be here waiting on a new ship, would I?"

The waitress arrived with their dishes, and sat them steaming on the table before them. Rojac picked up his chopsticks as she walked off and began picking at the rice bowl. "Your department," Rojac began between mouthfuls of white rice, "will have 30.83% of the ship's crew compliment at 222 personnel. it's the largest department on board, and I'm afraid its going to consist mostly of greenbacks." Rojac put down his bowl and reached for his green tea. "because of the war, all the experienced personnel have been reassigned to the ships already in active service. We're lucky enough to get the academy's best, being Special Forces, but good test scores don't match experience."

Scardona nodded, aware of what that meant. He would have to break these newbies in good, and break them in quick. It wouldn't be easy, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time he would have to deal with an inexperienced staff.

"I had the interim CEO, Lt Tobok, go ahead and put together a roster while I looked for a new CEO." Rojac slid another padd across the table. "It looks good to me, but I want you to look it over before I submit it. If you have any special request get to me to me by 1000 tomorrow morning. We are the flagship; I can pull some strings."

Curtis reached over and grabbed the PADD, absent-mindedly reading over some of the names. None of them sounded even vaguely familiar, which meant that he was going to have to do some hardocre studying before the Chimera arrived. It was something he wasn't exactly looking forward to. Pushing around the dumplings on his plate, he finally popped one in his mouth.

"Well, thank you for lunch, Commander." Rojac said, wiping his mouth and pushing his plate away. "next time it will have to be in the mess hall, or in my new office."

After swallowing what he had been chewing, Scardona quickly nodded, and stood up from his chair.

"Absolutely, sir. You can count on the fact that Engineering will be ready to go before we launch."

They shook hands again, and the Captain left. Curtis remained at the table, silently finishing what was on his plate while giving the information on the PADDs in front of him on closer inspection.

This'll be an interesting assignment, he thought.

= USS Chimera - En Route to Unity =

Everything was going according to plan and the Chimera was on schedule
for her journey to Unity and the Aeran System. All systems were
functioning normally and Bren was happy that the cloaking device was
keeping them concealed from any possible enemy spies who might want to
know just exactly where the new Chimera was and take advantage of her
vulnerable state.

Bren settled back in his seat, pleased that all was going so well when
suddenly... a horrid grinding sort of noise became audible.

"Kroitzer? What's that noise?" he demanded, slapping his hand on the
comm button.

"Not sure, sir," came the hesitant reply. "But don't worry... ignore
it and it will go away."

Bren suddenly had a vision of himself standing in Janeway's office
having to explain why yet another Chimera had been lost, but then she
reassured him that had already sent in a request for a new ship, the
Chimera-D, and she'd set aside stores of latinum (which she won in a
game of Quhn'Dok from a Klingon) to pay for the new ship... which was
needed at regular intervals.

"There's no need to worry, Bren," Janeway said as she strolled to her
the safe in her study and opened it up, revealing the bars of latinum
inside. "We're already there."

"Already there?" Bren asked, puzzled by her statement and somewhat
dazzled by the glimmering latinum bars.

"Yes, Commander Ohmsford, we're approaching our destination," she
repeated with a glimmer in her eye that wasn't unlike that of the Borg
Queen's.

Suddenly Bren started awake, sitting upright in his chair. He quickly
wiped a strand of saliva from the corner of his mouth and looked
around, realising he was in the ready room with a padd on the desk in
front of him.

"Come in," Bren said as a chime sounded at the door, and the doors
parted to reveal Lieutenant Reese standing in the doorway.

"Sir, you didn't answer your comm..." she said, taking in his
disheveled looks. "We've arrived at the Aeran System."

"Oh, right, thank you Lieutenant," Bren said and hurried got up from
behind the desk and followed her onto the bridge.

Reese took her position at ops and Bren sat down next to her at the
helm station. "Lieutenant, please hail the starbase," he said. "I'm
going to disengage the cloak."

"Yes, sir," she replied and carried out the order at the same time as
Bren took the cloak offline. "Channel open."

"Unity, this is the Chimera, Commander Ohmsford speaking. We are
requesting permission to establish orbit," Bren said as he slowed down
to one quarter impulse.

"Chimera, this is Unity; we've been expecting you. You are cleared for
docking at Platform C. Welcome to the Aeran System," came Unity's
reply after a moment.
