[USS Chimera] 240908.05 ||SB 234: UNITY|| NPC Duty Log, Capt. Trent Rodgers

=Task Force XO's Office=
=Starbase UNITY=

Trent rubbed his eyes as he looked over the reports that had awaited
him when he arrived at his office this morning. He shook his head, knowing
that eventually he was going to have to deal with it.

"Great, just great," he muttered.

Just then, First Lieutenant Bannister entered his office.

"Lieutenant, I just sent out your transfer request 15 minutes ago. So no, I
haven't received a response," Trent said, looking up from the reports at the
marine.

"That's not why I'm here," Bannister said.

Trent sighed.

"Let me guess, this has something to do with Commander Utley."

Bannister nodded.

"You know, since I arrived here, I haven't heard a peep from her or anything
bad about her. It's as if everything in engineering is in excellent shape. Then
I get this," Trent said, waiving his right arm over the PADDs. "Complaints from
every section of the starbase, from task force personnel on down to the
janitor."

"Sir, I was unaware UNITY had a janitor," Bannister interrupted.

"You know what I mean, lieutenant. It seems that problems have been
popping up all over the starbase and that she's responsible."

"Well, sir, you are not going to like this," Bannister said, handing Trent another
PADD. "Security cameras caught this 40 minutes ago."

Trent looked at the PADD, which showed a video image. He took a deep breath
and closed his eyes.

"I envy you, lieutenant," Trent finally said.

"Sir?"

"You'll be joining a combat unit where you either kill or be killed. I, on the other
hand, will have to continue to deal with this," Trent lifted the PADD Bannister
had given him.

Trent stood, using both hands on his desk to force himself up.

"Where is she now?" Trent asked.

"The brig."

"Inform Lieutenant Mumacik that I'll be paying Commander Utley a visit. Just me
and her. Afterwards, he can deal with her anyway he wishes."

"Aye, sir," Bannister said as Trent walked past him and out of the office.

Several minutes later, after proving to the security personnal in the brig that he
was who he said he was, Trent was escorted to the cell that Chloe Utley
occupied. She remained seated as Trent walked up to the force field barrier.

"Commander, you know why I'm here," Trent said.

The starbase CEO shook her head.

"Security cameras showed you planting surveillance devices near the
ambassadors' offices. This seems to coincide with a rash of problems that took
place throughout the starbase. Do you deny this?"

She again shook her head.

"Now, I've been told that I'm a pretty good gambler, so I would wager that if I
had Mr. Mumacik's people perform scans of sensitive areas of the starbase that
other such devices would be discovered. Would I be wrong to make this wager?"

This time, Chloe remained still.

"I take your lack of response as a yes," Trent said. "So, my next question, which
I'm sure I don't need to ask, but I will anyway to amuse myself is, 'who are you
planting these devices for?'"

"The Romulans," she said.

Trent smiled, "Nah, if it was the Romulans, you wouldn't be so willing to reveil that
fact. No, it wasn't the Rommies, but I'm not going to be the one who sits here and
interrogates you. Task force and starbase security will sort that out along with
anything else pertaining to your activities. Good day, Ms. Utley."

As Trent walked away, Chloe stood and rushed to the front of the cell.

"Sir!" she shouted out.

Trent stopped and turned to face Utley.

"Yes," he replied.

She opened her mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out. Then, after a
few seconds, she finally spoke.

"Uh, nothing sir," she said in a near whisper as he lowered her head.

Trent nodded as he turned and walked away.

[USS Chimera] SD 240908.04 | Joint Log | LtMjr Shao & Lt Mumacik (NPC)

"Donna Chiang" <aurora@subspacerelay.net> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

====== Corridor in front of MGen. Sharpe's office ======

Would Mumacik have emotions, he would be enraged. He was busy like never
before and it dated back from the time when the MEF arrived. MEF consisted
of marines mostly and marines had the bad habit to walk around all armed
and handling their weapons like pets. Almost a quarter of them tried to
smuggle unregistered weapons on UNITY with the excuse that those are their
personal weapons and they never part with them. Since there was QUITE a
number of marines coming, Mumacik needed almost the entire fleet level
security force to contain the situation. Wouldn't all be SSF trained
professionals, such a situation could easily end in a firefight.

This accident was the reason why some isolated cases of illegal smuggled
weapons passed the security network. They did not go unnoticed, but there
was just none who could investigate the matter. Until now.

Internal sensors located the person carrying a long bladed weapon to Major
General Sharpe's office. Normally, he would contact the General and ask
about the whereabouts, but with contacting the General he could alert the
unknown, so he decided to head straight there with two ODA units. Each ODA
unit consisted of 6 highly trained marines and a power of 13:1 seemed
enough to the Chief of fleet level security.

Just arriving in the corridor leading to Sharpe's office, Mumaick spotted
someone leaving the office. It was not the General, so it must have been
the unknown. Gesturing his team to take fire position, he shouted: "This
is Starbase UNITY security. Stand down and prepare to identify yourself!"

Dare spotted the teams and all 6'7" of lean Ka`Leigh went on the defense.
There were twelve, thirteen if she counted what she assumed was the
leader, strange people pointing weapons at her.

Part of her found it amusing, but the larger part was strategizing how to
take them down before they took her down. She could of course just cloak
or 'dart' past them, but she'd used her native abilities a bit too much
while traveling through Ahith space and her body was still recovering from
that. She couldn't push it too hard.

Instead, she adopted a relaxed stance, leaning against the wall with a
hand on her hip. "I'll tell you my name if you'll tell me yours," she
called back in a sing song voice that belied just how much pain she was
considering inflicting upon these men.

It was a knee-jerk reaction, but her entire 151 years of life had been
spent fighting for survival in some way, shape or form. For her, it was
defend first, take them down before they could take her down.

"I am Lieutenant Mumacik, Chief of fleet level security" he introduced
himself. The woman did not seem very dangerous, but following strict the
rules, he did not ordered his fellow security guys to lower their weapons.
"Our sensors indicate that you carry an unregistered bladed weapon. Such
an action is a violation of SSF Wartime rules and cannot be tolerated.
Now, please, identify yourself and prepare to be searched for the weapon."

Well, these guys did seem to have some skill after all. "Any weapon,
unregistered or otherwise, that I may have on me are for defensive
purposes. I will not be defenseless in this place."

She eyed the group ahead of her shrewdly, considering. After near on a
hundred years away from her home world of New Eden, she'd returned there
and claimed her rightful place amongst the New Eden Elite Guard. It
accorded her the right to carry any weapon without a warrant. It was a
enormous cause of honor and pride for any Ka`Leigh.

Whether it applied to the Federation was an entirely different manner. "I
am Dare Shao, MEF Platoon Leader." It was worth a try though. "I also
serve as a member of the New Eden Elite." As she spoke, she stood up
straight and crossed her arms over her chest.

Mumacik nodded and pulled out a PADD. He connected to the UNITY's main
computer and validated Dare's words. Within a few seconds he looked up and
said: "I am sorry Mrs. Dare Shao. I have no records of any Dare Shao in
the MEF roster, nor any platoon leaders are called that name. Carrying a
weapon on board Starbase UNITY is allowed only for UNITY's security
forces, federation or allied forces members while in duty and bodyguards
of accredited diplomatic staff. Exceptions to this rule can be used on
behalf of direct orders from UNITY's CO, XO or officer in charge as well
as SSF 1st Task Force Command staff. Can you present any such orders,
please?"

Ugh, the Federation were such sticklers for perfect accuracy, she'd
forgotten about that. Considering that most Ka`Leigh were extremely
xenophobic and she was one of maybe ten, if that, in Starfleet she wasn't
surprised that the New Eden Guard was unknown.

"Try looking for Ellesandara Shao, or alternatively Garret." Who knew
what Starfleet had done to her name by now. "I have just been appointed
as MEF Platoon Leader under the command of General Sharpe, my rank is
Lieutenant Major." She rolled her eyes and affected a bored expression.

Mumacik shook his head after another several seconds: "There are no such
records listed. I assume that your appointment is not yet officially
recorded." He looked at the woman

with expressionless face like always: "There are just 2 possible ways now,
Mrs. Shao, we need Major General Sharpe confirming your words in person or
you surrender yourself. You will be taken into custody until your
statements can be confirmed."

Dare shook her head. "It's Lieutenant Major. If you call me Mrs again,
the blade you suspect me of carrying is going to go through your heart."
She stared down the corridor at them.

"It's not my problem that you people are slow. I will not sit around in a
cell while you work it out. I was invited to attend this starbase for the
express reason of being recruited into the MEF."

Granted, it would be easier if she just gave them the blade. But she'd
sacrificed a lot and undergone numerous painful procedures in order to
procure it. She also wanted to see how far they'd go, test them. Check
just how good they were.

Mumacik shook his head the same: "I apologize, but until your statement is
confirmed, you hold no authority on this base. As far you cannot confirm
your identity, I must ask you for the last time to surrender your weapon.
Refusal will result in immediate arrest". All ODA marines were following
the conversation with tense, since one could never know what will happen
next. Six of them were aiming at the enemy woman, four were ready for body
combat and two were somewhere behind the crowd, in reserve.

There was no dilemma for Mumacik present. There was someone breaking a
rule and he was the security officer in charge. SSF regulations were very
clear for such cases and if Shao would refuse disarming and escorting to
brig, he would use all available force to force her. He felt no emotions,
no fear … he knew he cold be hurt, even killed, but he was just doing his
duty … not speaking about the fact that he was skilled in martial arts
himself.

"Lieutenant Mumacik, you will not take a Lieutenant Major into custody,
nor will I surrender my weapon." She read the body language. Oh yes,
they were wary of her and probably about to open fire. "If you want it
registered, give me the paperwork. But try to take it from me, and I will
defend myself. I am a MEF Platoon leader, I will not be weaponless."

Harming them would be a last option, so she'd just dart through them and
return to her shuttle while the paperwork got sorted.

She had to hand it to Mumacik though, it was very dedicated to his duty.
Perhaps these people were worthy of respect.

Considering the situation only a moment, Mumacik said: "One ODA team will
escort you and stay with you until I get the confirmation I need. I shall
contact General Major Sharpe immediately. Until then you stay in your
quarters or vessel if you have no quarters assigned yet. Leaving your
quarters or vessel will be taken as an enemy action and you will be
arrested immediately."

He waited for her decision, his hand ready to give the marines order to
shoot. All weapons wee set to stun of course, but none ever said that a
stun beam was painless.

She flickered, deciding whether or not to just cloak and return to her
vessel and son and spend the time in peace. Already she could feel the
burning in her lower back. Honestly, she couldn't be bothered with all of
this.

Dare shrugged. "Your terms are agreeable. Your ODA team will keep their
distance from me. I know my way back to my vessel." She dropped her
hands to her sides, holding them palms forward and stepped forward, still
flickering. "The weapon remains with me. There is also an adolescent
onboard my vessel, you will grant him access to the starbase."

Her tone made it obvious she wouldn't take no for an answer, despite her
situation. She stood closer to them now, almost a metre away, her
appearance finally stabilizing. Her lower back throbbed. "Come on then,
I don't have all day just to stand around waiting. Are you escorting me
or what?"

Herman <herman.oliver@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=/-\= UNITY STATION =/-\=

Cortez hadn't been on the station for very long, he hadn't spent much
time at Unity Station since he was reassigned from the Chimera but he
still knew better than most that it wasn't exactly the party central
capital of the federation. Plus, if you did find yourself a bit of
enjoyment it was always likely that things would spiral out of
control, and this place wasn't exactly the most lenient place for
conduct not befitting an officer.

Walking the promenade there really wasn't much going on. Security was
so tight here that any unsavory characters wouldn't have a chance on
the station, that wasn't to say that there weren't a few unsavory
characters about the place, they were just affiliated with the Forces
in one way or another. Stepping past a large window he stared at his
new home, at least for a little while. The USS Chimera was different
from the last time he'd seen it, Guzman must of gone and blown up the
last one, he chuckled to himself. This was actually the last place he
ever expected to be again, but with the war going on and the ship in
need of a new Security Chief with 'experience' he was quietly
volunteered. In the end it didn't matter what Cortez wanted, he had
his orders and he would follow them, just like he always had.

Minutes later Cortez found his way to the Chimera and after having his
personal effects beamed aboard decided that he'd get started early.

***

"Seems bigger", he thought to himself as he stepped into his office,
his deputy trailing behind.

"First order of business", Richard said turning to Lt. Castillo, "I
need you to recall all security staff back to the ship, anyone not
reporting back in 60 minutes gets transferred to Unity".

Charly stood a few feet from the door not sure exactly what to make of
his new CO. "They wont like that sir", he began, "They still have
another 24 hours".

"SECOND", The Majors voice boomed louder, "I want Red Alert level
security training exersizes ran with all security personnel not on
duty every four hours, starting in two hours"

The Lieutenant for once remained silent.

Cortez stepped back and sat down in the chair behind his desk. "And
third", he began in a lower voice, "I want you to get me all the ships
personal and security logs from the last 48 hours, I need to know
what's going on on this ship". He paused for a moment and looked back
up at Castillo. "Thats all, your dismissed".

Charly nodded, saluted and quickly left the office.

The Major had just decided to lean back in his chair for a minute when
he noticed a report sitting on top of a pile of reports on his desk.
It detailed the arrest of two of Chimeras officers. "Fighting!",
Cortez mumbled to himself and shook his head. "Fighting and
dishonoring the Forces he expected from fleet, but not from a Marine
Major and commander of the ships fighter wing at that.

Sitting back up his attention was quickly drawn to the time, he had an
appointment with the Captain whom he hadn't seen in some time. In
fact, the last time he'd seen Captain Rojac he was just a Lieutenant.
"This ought to be interesting", he mumbled to himself.

=Trent Rodgers' Apartment/Quarters=
=Starbase UNITY=

Trent stepped out of his bathroom with a towel draped behind his neck, wearing
a pair of standard starfleet physical training shorts, which he found comfortable,
and one of the few civilian clothes that he brought with him from Earth, his
favorite, if not a little worn Rolling Stones T-shirt.

He usually perferred a sonic shower since it was quick and provided a better
cleansing, but since he found himself with some free time on his hands, he
took a hot water shower, which felt great on his tired muscles. As he dried
his still damp hair in his bedroom, he heard a noise and barely had time to
react as someone leaped at him from his left. Trent moved in time to avoid
taking the full blow, but he and his assailant still went tumbling to the deck.

It took Trent a couple of seconds to regain his composure, as his head dodged
a couple of fist that slammed into the deck. Trent wrapped his legs around the
body of what he now realized was a masked figure. With his left hand, he landed
a shot against the assailant's right jaw. The two grappled on the ground for a
few seconds before Trent, after using his towel around the assailant's neck
managed to get to his feet. As he moved to attack the masked person, Trent
instead was tossed into the air, falling hard against a chair. When the assailant
approached, hisk used his left leg to trip him/her.

They fought for a few minutes more, with the two ending up in the main living
area. As Trent sat on the couch, his lip and nose bloodied, he watched his
assailant approach again.

"Not bad," the masked figure said. "For a starfleet officer."

"Not bad yourself," Trent chuckled as the assailant removed his mask to reveal
Lieutenant Bannister. "For a marine."

"Thank you, sir," Trent's aide replied.

"You know, when I told you I wanted to beef up on some of my hand-to-hand
combat training, I didn't mean something like this," Trent said, noticing that the
marine looked as bad as he did.

"It seemed like a good idea," Bannister replied.

"Well, at least you could have let me dry my hair first," Trent said. "Anyhow, I
know now that I haven't completely lost it by sitting behind a desk."

"You did well," Bannister said, taking a seat next to Trent. "But you still have
some room for improvement."

"Yeah, well, don't we all," Trent said. "Has Commander Ohmsford been released
from the brig?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. It won't do to have the science and engineering advisor to the task force
locked away. Besides, with what happened to Major Liev ... well, I can imagine it's
not going to be easy for him."

Bannister nodded.

Trent stood and walked over to the replicator where he replicated an ice pack,
which he placed over his right eye.

"Tell me, lieutenant, why are you here?" Trent asked, as he returned to the couch.

"Because Admiral Jefferson assigned me to be your aide."

"No ... I mean why are you not with a combat outfit in the middle of a war? Your
hand-to-hand and weapons records are outstanding and your even an impressive
pilot. I'm sure you'd rather be on the front lines fighting."

"Aye, sir," Bannister said.

"According to your record, you were transferred to a desk job a little less than two
years ago. Those records did not explain why the transfer was made. You didn't
request it, did you?"

"No, sir."

Trent leaned forward with an inquisitive look in his face.

"What happened, lieutenant?"

Bannister took a deep breath before looking at Trent.

"To make a long story short, I slept with my commanding officer's wife."

Trent couldn't hold back a laugh.

"Really?" Trent said.

Bannister nodded, "At the time, though, I didn't know who she was. When I found
out, it was too late. Captain Bright had me transferred to some lame assignment
back on Earth. He was pissed, to say the least."

Trent leaned back on his couch, putting the ice pack on the end table to his left.

"Would you rather be with the task force's new Marine Expeditionary Force?" Trent
asked.

"Yes, sir," Bannister's mood seemed to brighten. "It would be an honor."

"Well, Lieutenant, I think you've been punished enough. I'll send the transfer
papers to General Sharpe's office first thing in the morning. That, of course, is
subject to the general's approval."

"But sir, what about Admiral Jefferson?"

"The admiral said that I could use you in anyway I see fit. If I believe that you're
better served under Sharpe's command, then so be it. Besides, contrary to the
admiral's belief, I do not need a babysitter."

"Thank you, sir. But this will leave you without an aide," Bannister said.

"No offense, lieutenant, but while your administrative skills are sound, I'm sure
I can easily find a sutible replacement somewhere on this starbase," Trent said.

"No offense taken, sir," Bannister said.

Trent smiled as he grabbed the ice pack and again placed it over his right eye.

"Maybe you should go to sickbay, sir," Bannister said.

"Perhaps you should go as well," Trent replied.

"I'm fine, sir."

"Then so am I," Trent said. "You're excused, lieutenant. I'm sure you have better
things to do during your night off."

"Thank you, sir," Bannister said as he stood, rendered a sharp salute before
turning and exiting Trent's quarters.
