[USS Chimera] SD 240910.02 | Joint Back Log | Richard Sharpe & Chloe Merau

=/\= The Start of a Log… you know, the beginning bit… where you begin… oh well if you haven’t got it yet, I doubt my explaining it will help! =/\=

Chloe stood in front of her locker, taking off her helmet. Her hair was stuck to her head and face in odd positions from the helmet. Tossing the helmet into her locker, it rolled out. She didn't care much at the moment. Taking off her outter uniform flightsuit, she hung that up a little more neat inside her locker before she put her helmet on the proper shelf.

She took a deep breath, letting out a sigh. She was one of the last people in the lockerarea, she was going in a very slow motion at the moment, not really feeling like to move much faster.

Richard left the briefing room, having given the company CO’s of 2nd Battalion 24 hours to prepare for departure. Richard himself had 24 hours to get ready, and made his way to the quarters he was sharing with Chloe. His equipment bag hadn’t actually been unpacked, but it was worth checking his weapons, stripping them down and maintaining them. It was something of a pre-mission tradition of his.

Finishing what she needed to do, she headed to her quarters... or the quarters she shared with Richard. Making her way down a hall, threw a turbolift, and down anthor hall, she finally reached their quarters. Entering, she saw that Richard was already there. "Evening, Love..." She said with a smile on her face.

Richard was sat in the front room, an M16A2 stripped down on the coffee table, as he stood there, cleaning the firing mechanism. He looked up when Chloe arrived, and smiled. “Evening my sweet.”

"Your getting ready to go on a mission yourself, aren't you?" She said, looking from the rifle, to him, some disappointment on her face.

“Indeed I am.” Richard said. “I’ll be leading Operation Valkrye myself.”

"What happened to playing it safe and being a general?" She asked as she moved farther into their quarters. She went to the replicator, turning to look at him. "Do you want anything love?"

“A cold coke, please.” He said, and turned his attention back to his rifle. “You know as well as I do that I can’t be content to sit back here and watch the casualty reports coming in. I have to be in the thick of it.”

"I will never forgive you if you come in on one of those casualty reports, Richard." She said, hope that he never would in the tone of her voice. "Computer- one cold glass of -coke- and..." She paused a moment to choose what she wanted, "And a glass of marlot." She asked, wanting that, even if she knew it was only replicated.

“Alcohol?” Richard asked, his head shooting up.

"Shhhh..." She said as she set his coke down in front of him. "Soon Im going to completely stop." Chloe wanted to enjoy some of the time before she was going to completely stop drinking alcohol for some time.

Richard eyed her carefully. “You and I both know that you and alcohol do not mix.” He sighed. “I fear that Harper’s picked up your old habit, something bad has happened to him, but he wont’ tell me. But he’s been necking the Romulan ale found aboard station like its water rations.”

She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. She set the full glass back into the replicator. "Computer- a glass of cranberry juice." It wasn't what she was craving, but it would help. Taking the new drink, she went to sit down next to him. "It helps when you don't want to open up to others." She said, knowing out of experience. "And he will get over it, I did. I just need reminders sometimes."

Richard put his arm around Chloe’s shoulders and pulled her close to him. “You know I care deeply about you and for you.” He said. “I just don’t want you to start drinking again, just because I’m going into combat.”

"I promise you I won't." She told him, nuzzling her face into the side of his neck. "Im just hoping that soon I won't be able to." This was something he knew she wanted.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked, looking at her.

"When we decide it's time to have the child I want, Im not going to go anywhere near it. Not before or during the time I carry." She told him, relishing the thought in her mind.

“You still want a child with me?” He asked, somewhat amused. “And ruin that fantastic figure of yours?”

"I want *your* child Richard." She said, amused that he thought the idea had worn off her.

“You want Sarah?” He asked, teasingly. “You’ve not even met her!”

"I want a child from the both of us. One thats completely mine." Since their relationship had become very steady, she had started to have a strong urge to have a child of her own.  His desire for marriage first kept her at bay for the time being, but soon as that was put to process, she wanted a child from him. "I want to have the trouble of carrying it, birthing it. Having it be from me."

“And you’re happy to give up your career to bring up this child?” He asked, concerned.

"I will deal with that when it comes up." She told him, moving her face from his neck to look at him.

“You’re absolutely sure you want a child with a man who is old enough to be your own father.” He said, deadpan.

"Richard, we've been over this before. Not in the sence of me wanting a child from you, but when we first got involved. You know that doesn't matter to me." Her hand softly went to his cheek, reassuring him.

“I just feel that I’m stealing your youth.” He said, looking into her eyes. He could not deny his love for her, and looking longingly into her deep blue eyes, he knew she was right, as he could see the love pouring back at him. He leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips.

She returned the kiss softly. "This is something I *need* to do when Im young, Richard. You know it will only get harder for me as I get older."

He nodded at her, and took her hand in his. “To that end, I left some of my… you know… with sickbay on Unity. If anything should happen to me, I want you to use it.”

"But nothing *is* going to happen to you." She told him, wrapping her arms around him tight. With his words, she knew that he realized how important to her it was to have his child. It wasn't just a child that she wanted, but it was his.

“Well, I’ve managed this long without dying. I figure I might make it through, but you had to know I made provisions…” He said.

"If that's what it would take to have your child, but surely you know I would like to conciece in a more .... traditional.... manner." her tone, as well as the expression on her face was obvious.

“I’m certain you’d enjoy it more, in any case.” He said, smiling at her.

"I don't think they would leave me feeling completely satasifed at the end...." She said with a soft laugh.

“Well, I’m glad I satisfy you.” He said, smirking.

"Now there's a good reason for my youth and your experience..." She said, amused that their conversation had left from being serious.

“Well, I can’t deny that age does have its advantages in the bedroom.” He chuckled.

Kissing his lips, she set her glass of cranberry juice down on the coffee table. Both of her hands then went to rest on his chest.

Richard put his own drink down, and wrapped his arms around Chloe, and a thought ran through his mind as he did. Age had its advantages on the sofa too…

[Location: Padassa Station]

[Timeline: 4 hours before departing the station]

A young private ran through the sheer mass of green that had gathered on the main deck, in preparation for the big jump. Operation Valkrye, General Sharpe's big push against the Romulan's, was due to kick off in a few short hours. The private, an adjunct of Colonel Westman, was pushing his way through the groups of men.

"I'm looking for Lieutenant Winters, anyone seen Lieutenant Winters?"

Holding up a hand, Dick tried to wave down the man, "That's me, Private. What I can do for you?"

"Sir, Colonel Westman's compliments, and can you join him in his office ASAP." The private said.

"Uh...sure, thank you, Private," replied the Lieutenant before turning around to his Platoon Sergeant. "Get 'em saddled up and start transferring over. I'll join you when I'm finished with the Colonel." As Randleman nodded Winters turned and began making his way through the crowd himself.

Within minutes Dick found himself outside the Colonels office, waiting for permission to enter.

"Come in Dick!" Colonel John Westman shouted, gesturing with his hand through the open door.

Taking several steps into the office the Lieutenant asked, "You asked to see me, Colonel?"

"Indeed I did." Westman said. "Close the hatch."

Moving to pull the metal hatch closed, Dick couldn't help but wonder what was going on. As far as he was aware neither he nor any of his men had done anything to merit disciplinary action. When the hatch had sealed he turned back around to the Colonel, "Sir?"

"I haven't had a chance to congratulate you on the fine job you and your boys did on Norris. A tough assignment for sure, but we sent the best, and the best pulled through. You handled yourself really well down there Dick. Spiers was rather pleased, and so was General Sharpe." Westman said.

Dick had to force down a smile as he nodded, "Thank you, Colonel. I've got to give the credit to the men, though. They were the ones that really carried out that assault. The recognition should go to them."

"That it does, Dick." Westman said. "But you were the OC, and victory or failure depended on your actions. You accredited yourself with great distinction in the field of battle." The colonel moved around to stand before Winters. "General Sharpe has seen fit to promote you to 1st Lieutenant, for your actions on Norris 8.

Congratulations Dick." Westman removed the bronze bar from Winters' uniform, and replaced it with a silver one instead.

For a moment Winters was speechless. This had been the last thing he had expected to hear from the Regiment CO. He (and Easy along with him) had just been doing their duty. Finally he cleared his throat and responded, "Thank you, Colonel. It's an honor to serve with Easy Company, and I won't let them, or the regiment, down, sir."

"I know you won't son." Westman said. "You'll be pleased to hear that you're going to be bumped to Easy Company XO, since you're the only other 1st Lieutenant in the company right now."

"Understood, Colonel," Dick said with another nod. Thankful he'd still be with his men, the Lieutenant was still well aware that he was about to find that there was a great deal more coming to occupy his time.

"General Sharpe has stated that he would like to be with Easy Company during the assault, and since it is the weakest company at the moment, having the General and the Sergeant Major with you guys might improve things. I'm tasking you with looking after the General, Lieutenant." Westman said, his tone more formal now.

This time Winters was speechless for a different reason. He knew what this was, and he definitely didn't like it. However, he was also fully aware he had absolutely no choice in the matter. Finally Dick nodded, "Understood, sir."

"I don't like this any more than you do, Winters." Westman said. "But he is the CO, and he is more than capable of looking after himself. However… it would not be good for any of our careers if we allowed the General to get killed on our watch."

"I'll do my best to keep that in mind, Colonel," the Lieutenant said rather flatly as he nodded. He knew his duty, and he would do it. If the Colonel said to babysit the General, by by gods he'd babysit the General.

"Just don't make it look like you're baby-sitting." Westman said. "He's a very intelligent man, and he knows when he's being handled. However, these orders came on the advice of his own Sergeant Major, to Brigadier Stirling, who made it an order to me."

Raising an eyebrow Dick asked, "Permission to speak freely, sir?"

"By all means, Lieutenant," Westman said, using the rank to remind him who he was talking to, in case he planned on crossing a line.

"Were the General -truly- intelligent, sir, he would know better than to risk a Flag Officer, himself in this case, by putting them in the middle of a combat action," Dick said, not quite bothering with the niceties of conversation. After all, he had been given permission to speak his mind.

"General Sharpe is a very strange man." Westman said, slowly. "However, he is one hell of a field commander, and I know this from personal experience. That man can see things happening well before they happen. If I'm honest with you Dick, and this doesn't leave this room, it was a real crime promoting that man out of the field."

Westman sighed for a moment. "The reason I picked you for this crap job, Winters, is because I see a lot of what Sharpe has, in you. I truly think that you can learn a great deal from him."

"If you say so, Colonel," Dick replied with a shrug. "I'll take your word for it. But I just really hope he knows how to keep his head down."

"Lieutenant, you don't make it to Major General without learning that." Westman snapped. "You might not like it, but you're a marine, and so is the General. Never forget that."

The Lieutenant shook his head as he replied, "Never, sir."

Westman chucked a PADD at Winters. "That's the man's CV. It might be worth getting to know him as you would any grunt under your command."

"I'll have plenty of time during the trip," admitted Dick as he accepted the PADD. "It'll be nice to have some reading material."

"Very well Lieutenant." Westman said. "Don't let me down son."

[Captain's Quarters - Deck Two - USS Chimera NCC 96899]

Cropa didn't look at the screen when he left the conference room. He had seen enough; enough to personally justify the war with Romulus in his own mind. Their use of thalaron weapons was a travesty of the 'honor' they claimed to hold so dearly. Rojac almost wished the Chimera as equipped with an array like the scimitars - if only to give the Romulans a taste of their own medicine. But then he would remember something his grandfather would tell him every time Cropa got in an argument. 'Take the high road.' He would say. At this point in time, Cropa Rojac was finding the high road quite difficult.

The young Captain entered his quarters and crossed immediately to his bedroom closet. He reached in and pulled out a standard away team jump suit and tossed it on the bed. His tunic was halfway over his head hen the door chimed.

"Come." He called, resuming his activity.

Lieutenant Rayna Dior appeared at his bedroom door. "You're being foolish, you know?"

Cropa turned to sit at the foot of the bed so he could take off his pair of slacks. "What gives you that impression, Lieutenant?"

"Don't get formal on me, Cropa." Rayna said defiantly. "You know very well what I'm talking about. Walters should be on that away team, a Captain is not supposed to partake in suicide missions."

Cropa remained silent as he pulled on the solid black jumpsuit with the red horizontal line running across the chest. He pulled the zipper shut up to his neck before slapping his palms on his knees. "Rayna, I need to go on this mission."

"Why?" She asked, her emotions showing plainly on her face. It was a far cry from the professional officer at the controls of the flagship of the First Taskforce. "You're supposed to make the XO lead away teams. Your too valuable to the fleet."

"I may a promise, Rayna." Cropa replied. "I am not leaving Cortez to die on that station, nor any other of my marines on that station." He stood up, defiantly. "THey are my men, my crew, and I will not let them down."

Rayna took a deep breath and wiped a tear from her eye. After a quiet moment he stood and draped her arms atop his tall shoulders, laying her head against his chest. "You will be careful won't you?"

"If I say yes, will it make you feel better?" He asked with a smirk.

"Marginally."

"Then yes, I'll be careful." He kissed her forehead, then gently pushed her back. "Now chin up, Lieutenant. Major Walters is going to need a damned good helm officer at the controls."

She smiled, and snapped of a salute. "Aye sir." Then she leaned in for a kiss. She urned around as she headed out the door. "Just be back before dinner."

Rojac chuckled, then seated himself to pull on his combat boots. When he was finished, he entered the hallway and walked down to the waiting turbolift doors.

"Shuttle Bay One." He declared. The doors shut.

[Location: Marine AC-808 Dropship SV-196-13]

[Timeline: 36 hours after the mission briefing]

So here we were again. Not three days after the assault on Norris Eight Easy Company was once again on the move towards the next combat zone. The men were uneasy about their rapid redeployment, but for the most part they dealt with it well. They were trained for combat. They knew to expect it.

Lieutenant T'Shal seemed to settle into the role of Company Commander fairly easily. It may have just been her Vulcan training, but if she was uneasy about command she didn't show it. And that really helped the men adjust to her. They knew her, and trusted her, but having a new CO could always throw a wrench into the machinery.

"Bull, have 'em start their final checks. We'll be in drop position in just over an hour," Lieutenant Dick Winters ordered as he moved down through the center of the troop carrier, having just left the small craft's cockpit.

The rather large man nodded and stood up from his seat and moved towards the rear of the chamber in order to start the equipment checklists, "You got it, Lieutenant." Denver 'Bull' Randleman had been Dick's Platoon Sergeant for just over a week at this point, but already Dick knew that he could trust the Gunny with anything.

The assault on the snow-covered moon of Norris VIII had been Dick's first combat action as a commissioned officer in the Starfleet Marine Corps. And that assault, despite being an overall victory, had ended up costing the entire company dearly. Nearly a third had been incapacitated due to injuries, with nearly fifteen percent killed-in-action. Anyone with a common ability with figures could tell this left Easy Company in a very bad spot. First Platoon, through luck more than circumstance, had managed to make it through with only minimal losses.

As always Command had seen fit to replenish the losses with freshly minted soldiers, looking like they all had just come from the same cookie-cutter mold. This is what unsettled the veterans of Easy Company the most. It was difficult to trust a stranger with your lift, no matter what the propaganda of the Corps advertised. An unknown was always an unknown, and these men who had never once been in combat were definitely an unknown.

Dick had wanted to meet up with Lieutenant th'Laxonth before the battalion had left Padassa Station, but apparently Nix had been assigned as part of the forward deployment trying to get as much last-minute intelligence as they could before the assault. Unfortunately not much had come from the intelligence group, which left Easy and the rest of the companies in a nice tight bind.

"Sixty minutes, Lieutenant!" called a voice from the control deck behind him. The compartment fell eerily silent at that announcement, as the men began to look between themselves. They knew this was the calm before the storm, and if the expectations were anywhere near accurate, this was going to be one hellacious storm.

"If you've got any gods," Dick shouted out and he slowly made his way down among the men of First Platoon, "Now would be the time to start praying…"
