Part 1 )

*** Main Hospital. SB Unity ***

"This is USS Montgomery to Starbase Unity, we have a
priority one medical emergency, request immediate transport
for one patient straight to sickbay."

In the main hospital the call was passed to the head nurse
Lucy Fleming who immediately alerted the team on call in the
emergency rooms.

Three people materialized into the middle of the hospital
reception area. Doctor Borvan was holding up a sachet of
plasma as his nurse was trying to keep an oxygen mask on the
patient.

"Details" Lucy said, wasting no time on pleasantries.

"This is Major General Richard Sharpe, male, aged 50,
he's bleeding out internally, but we can't isolate the
source. He's not responding to treatment and he's
slipped into cardiac arrest twice prior to beam down."
Doctor Borvan reported.

"Straight to the sensor suite." Lucy directed although the
team needed no second telling. " ..and contact Doctor
Summers." she said to the duty nurse who nodded and put
through the call. Anyone of high rank was routinely seen by
the CMO whether or not in an emergency.

"How long has he been like this?" Lucy asked walking
extremely quickly to keep up with the trolley and the trio
engaged in keeping the patient stable.

"Just shy of an hour." Doctor Borvan said. "He'd recovered
from his
initial
injuries in sickbay, but he broke out of sickbay, then this
happened."

"When were the injuries...how long ago?" Lucy demanded as
they entered the brightly lit suite.

"Coming on eight hours now." The doctor said.

On the count of three, the Generals body was transferred to
the bio bed and immediately a surgical support frame was
lowered across him.
The nurse was back. " The doctor will be here in a few
minutes." she said.

"Good." Borvan said, just as Richard once again went into
cardiac arrest.
"Damnit! He's coding!" Borvan moved towards the General.
"Don't you
dare die
on me you old fart!"

The 'clamshell' support frame had an inbuilt
cardiostimulator and it was this that stabilised Richard
'though it took a few minutes.

"Whats happened?" Rangi asked as she hurried into the room
and Lucy explained about the previous injury, the cardiac
arrests, the internal bleeding and how Richard had
"...broken out of sickbay." glancing at Borvan as she ended.
Rangi looked sharply in his direction. " Broken out of
sickbay?" she asked.

"He was in a state of emotional distress." Borvan said. "He
refused
to
return to bed, despite repeated requests. He kept blaming
himself for the
failure of the mission, so Sergeant Harper took him
somewhere to try and
cheer him up, then a few moments later, called for help, as
the General had
collapsed and was spewing blood from his mouth."

Rangis lips compressed into a line of annoyance for she had
just left her previous patient who was blaming himself for a
failure which in all probability he couldnt have avoided
either.

"Let's see what he's done." Rangi said taking Lucys place at
the side of the bed, her eyes scanning the multitude of
results made possible by the sensor array above them.

Borvan waited patiently for Rangi's assessment of the
General.

"That's it." Rangi said and looked across at Borvan. " Youve
never treated him for a duodenal ulcer?" she asked.

"A duodenal ulcer?" Borvan said, with a look of mild
surprise. "No, we
were
dealing with combat triage, we dealt with what we could see.
We were
remarkably short staffed, so it is conceivable that a common
alement went
unnoticed."

" I take it he never complained of it then?" she said,
already suspecting the answer would be 'no' She had had
dealings with marines before and was of the opinion that the
vast majority of them felt that seeking medical advice was
tantamount to laying down their phasers in the face of the
enemy.

"I'm not his regular physician." Borvan said, narrowing his
eyes. "I
was
just on duty in the recovery room when the General woke up.
His physician is
the MEF Chief Surgeon, Colonel Veronica Fletcher. But no, he
mentioned
nothing about an ulcer, and it wasn't in his file."

"Then he's probably put up with the discomfort...possibly
for some time." Rangi replied. " he could ofcourse have been
self medicating, taking non prescription drugs to ease
things...he wouldnt be the first to do that."

"With all due respect doctor, this speculation isn't helping
to stop the
bleeding." Borvan said, flatly.

"We wouldnt have to speculate if we had up to date medical
histories." Rangi stated and ignoring Borvan, requested Lucy
to prepare the surgical tools she needed.

"You may observe if you wish." she said looking at Borvan
again and accepting the exoscalpel Lucy held ready, waited
only a moment for his reply.

Borvan shrugged. "I've got other patients to deal with. I
assume I can leave
the General in your charge then?"

"Most certainly." Rangi replied and to Lucy added: " Let's
begin."

[USS Chimera] SD240911.02 ||SB 234: UNITY|| NPC Duty Log, Capt. Trent Rodgers

=TF XO's Office=
=Starbase UNITY=

"There's not much you could have done about any of it," Denaria Loto said as she looked over the same reports that Trent was reading.

"Unfortunately, you're right," Trent said as he tossed on of the PADDs he was reading onto the desk "Still ..."

Operation Magna wasn't looking like the overwhelming success that Trent had hoped for when he had seen off elements of that mission weeks earlier. Padassa had fallen, Anaxis had turned out to be a trap and the Chimera had to deal with an unexpected surprise.

At least this allowed Trent forget all about the death warrant placed on him and his brother being stolen away by some secret starfleet project.

"And out of all of this, the damn Erassians look like they're going to get their hands on some pretty impressive technology," Trent continued. "Sons of bi ..."

"I didn't know you had such animosity toward the Erassians," Demaria responded.

"If you haven't realized by now, I hate everyone," Trent said.

She just stared at him.

"Damn it, I don't hate the Erassians. It would have just been nice if one thing in this entire operation would have gone right for us," Trent added.

"Well, we did shut down that gate and the Bravo part of the operation was, on a whole, a success."

It was Trent's turn to stare at her.

"So, it could have been worse," she finished.

"Yeah, I suppose," Trent said, rubbing his eyes.

"Maybe you should take a break from these reports. You've been at it for five straight hours now."

"Maybe in a few minutes," Trent said.

"You said that an hour ago."

"Did I?"

She nodded as she had the computer on his desk facing her. She downloaded another report onto a PADD.

"Here's the latest from Anaxis," she said, handing him the PADD.

He looked it over for a couple of minutes. Moments later, the expression on his face changed to one of mild grief.

"Ms. Loto, if anyone else asks me for a transfer to a combat assignment, remind me of this day," Trent said before he stood, tossing the PADD back to Demaria. "I think I'll take that break now."

As Trent walked out of the office, Demaria looked over the PADD. She noticed a name that Trent had highlighted from the updated combat casualty report.

[First Lieutenant Benjamin Edward Bannister]

She remembered the name. He was Trent's former aide. The one he had approved a combat transfer for. She looked back at the now closed door.

[USS Chimera] SD 240911.01 | Duty Log | MGen. Richard Sharpe

=/\= Infirmary – USS Montgomery =/\=

Darkness.

He could hear sounds around him. At first they were muffled background sounds, but as consciousness claimed him from the depths of his slumber, he became more aware of those sounds. There were people talking around him in a room filled with other people… some of whom were screaming, others moaning.

“…think he’ll recover?”

“No, I don’t.”

“What do you want me to do, doctor?”

“Give him 20cc’s of impedrezene, let him go quietly, and with a little dignity.”

Richard’s eyes blinked open, and the harsh white light caused him to squint until his eyes adjusted to the light. He could see the two people who had been talking beside the bio-bed next to him. As they moved aside, after giving the patient his injection, he could see a young marine laying there, with half his face missing.

He sat up to take a good look at the young man… barely out of adolescence, laying there. Richard recognized him as Lance Corporal Higgins from Dog Company. He was a replacement from advanced gunnery school, presumably one of the artillery techs.

The doctor spotted that Richard was sitting up and moved next to him, to screen him from the marine. “Good to see you back with us General.” He said, trying to put some enthusiasm in his otherwise dour tone. He was a Tellarite, presumably in his 40’s, Earth year measurement anyway.

“Why am I here?” Richard asked, groggily.

“You suffered multiple injuries from projectile weapon impacts. You suffered a severe loss of blood, but we got to you in time to prevent brain damage due to a lack of oxygen.” The doctor said, uniformly, as if he were discussing the weather.

It was clear that Richard was in some sort of recovery ward, and that through a set of doors on the other side of the room, was the main triage area, where the screams were coming from. Richard slid off the bed, stumbled a little, and regained his composure.

“Sir, I would strongly recommend getting back onto the bio-bed. You need time to rest and recover.” The doctor said, moving to drive Richard back onto the bed. Richard glared at the man, and shoved past him, and strode over to the doorway leading to triage.

Inside was a carnage of blood, guts and agony. He could see doctors, medical technicians, nurses and other support staff rushing around inside the sickbay, tending to more people than the bay could adequately hold. There was blood all over the floor, as marines writhed in agony. Some were silent, which was more concerning to the doctors than those screaming.

The Tellarite doctor appeared at Richard’s side. “Sir, you shouldn’t be here. Please sir…”

Richard moved his arm away from the man’s touch. “I did this…” He said, softly.

“No sir, the Romulan’s did this.” Came a gruff voice from behind him, and Patrick Harper appeared at Richard’s right hand side. “Doctor Borvan contacted me and told me you were awake.”

“I failed them.” Richard said, looking pale and shell shocked. “I lead them into a trap. I failed to support them when things fell apart.”

“That’s not true sir!” Harper snapped. “You did all any one man could do and more. You have nothing to reproach yourself for.”

Richard looked up into the eyes of his Irish Sergeant Major. “Do you really believe that, Patrick?” Richard asked. “Look around this room, and tell me you believe that.”

“I believe it sir, because I was there. As were the countless other marines who aren’t in here because of what you did.” Harper said firmly.

“Starfleet Command will not be as forgiving I fear.” Richard said. “I lead an invasion of a Romulan critical world, and blew it.”

“If you stay in here, of course you’ll believe that.” Harper said. “Come with me.”

Richard dazily followed Harper out of sickbay, and down the corridor, and into another large room. It was the main barracks room, filled with marines who were not wounded.

“Ten-hut!” Someone shouted, and everyone, regardless of what they were doing, ran down to the foot of their bed, and stood at attention.

“At ease.” Harper said. “General Sharpe has recovered from his injuries and has chosen to visit you.”

“Hoo-Rah General Sir!” Cheered the men.

Richard looked at Harper with a cautious eye.

“Let the General hear how you feel about him.” Harper said.

The marines in the room exchanged looks, and one of the Sergeants cocked a sly smile. “From the halls of Montezuma, to the Shores of Tripoli…”

Everyone in the room joined in: “We fight our countries battles, in the air, on land and sea. First to Fight for Right and Freedom, and to keep our honour clean; we are proud to claim the title of United Federation Marines!”

Richard felt tears roll down his cheeks as he heard them sing the marine anthem as by way of an answer. Harper quickly wheeled the General out of the room, turning back to say. “Thank you men, carry on.” He said to the duty sergeant, who got the men to relax.

“We’ll be arriving at Unity in little under an hour sir.” Harper said, steering Richard down the corridor. “When we get back, we’ll have Doctor Summers check you over, before anything else.”

Richard didn’t say anything, he could feel his mind numbing, and without even realising it, he felt lightheaded, free, unrestrained. He felt like he could fly. If only this damn man on his arm wouldn’t keep holding him back. Why was he here anyway, and what was going on?

He didn’t even register the look of horror on Harper’s face as he grinned up, and bubbles of blood came from the corner of his mouth.

[USS Chimera] SD240910.24 Duty Log - MCapt COps Jade Reese - "Advance Operations Course 201" Part I

=/\= Training Simulator, SB UNITY =/\=

Jade was in the room behind the simulator where she could monitor what was going on durning the simulation there was a door that led from the monitoring room to the simulation room which would give Jade easy access to the room. Then the simulation room had a door leading back to the class room where the rest of the students would watch the simulation on a screen in the class room.

After Jade was happy with how everything was set-up she headed out of the monitoring room and into the simulation room and finally into where the classroom where the officers were already filing in. Seeing Ens DeChant, "Ensign I want you to be in the class room while I'm in the observation lounge durning the simulations." Jade said, " and I want you to ask the class questions while the simulation is running." She added.

"Yes ma'am." Louis (NPC) said seeing that it was beneficial seeing, talking about what you saw and what you might to and then actually doing it. Something that the academy does but sometimes not well. He was glad that he was assigned to be her aide seeing that this'll help him learn how to teach seeing that's his main goal is to become an instructor. "How long will you've them be in the simulator." Louis asked.

"45 minuets." Jade said wanting to get at least 2 to 3 groups through the simulation in one class period, "but the simulation well end if the ship is destroyed or if too many systems shut down." Jade added rubbing her forehead feeling a tinge of a headache coming on.

"Are you okay?" Louis asked noticing her rubbing her head and hoping that this wasn't too much to soon.

"I'm fine." Jade said dropping her head once she greeted the class and started the simulator she would take a few minuets to meditate and just get her mental defenses back up. She then looked up and notice that the class was all there and ready to begin. Jade walked over to the podium, "greetings officers and welcome to Advance Operations Course 201." She said stopping and hitting a button that brought up a list of things they were going to learn how to do better.

"All of these things you learned how to do in the Academy but they didn't teach you how to do it when you've two Romulan ships bearing down on you. Or having you transfer power while you're doing 20 other things at the same time." Jade said looking at each and every one of the officers. "RAdm Guzman wants me to get each and everyone of you ready to man the operations post on a ship in the TF and then not piss or sh** your pants when things get a little hairy." Jade said.
