[USS Chimera] SD 240909.08 | Duty Log | MGen. Richard Sharpe

=/\= Starbase Padassa =/\=

Richard looked down at the pile of padds that were awaiting his reading. God he hated paperwork, why he ever took promotion past Lieutenant, he never knew. Vanity thy name is Richard Sharpe.

It was 0700, time to start the working day, and Richard was as ready as he was going to be, wearing his duty threads and full of breakfast and coffee. He had arrived at his office five minutes earlier than he was expected to sign in, so he’d have time to grab a fresh mug of hot tea, before resuming his gruelling duties for another sixteen hour day.

One of the most annoying aspects of his morning routine was Lieutenant Colonel Francine Smith, his attaché for this assignment. Her job was to keep on top of things, and make sure that the wheels remained in motion. She was reputed to be one of the best attaché’s in the service, due to her uncanny ability to get the impossible done. The downside to her fantastic attention to detail and dedication to duty, was her annoying upbeat attitude in the dawn hours, when Richard wanted everyone to be as sullen as he was.

Sure enough, she turned up bang on time, wearing a standard marine uniform. She wasn’t one of the ‘elite’ marines, so was wearing the silver oak leaf on her chest, rather than the elite insignia that he was becoming used to seeing on his staff. “Good Morning General!” She said, in her irritatingly chipper and bouncy mood.

Richard grumbled and muttered “Morning.”

Francine was not the blonde bimbo that everyone thought she was. In fact, she was extremely intelligent, but hid it from her colleagues by pretending to be ditsy and bouncy. In fact, she was very much aware that General Sharpe preferred to wait half an hour after arriving to work before starting, but was resolute in her desire to change that hindrance, as it would slow down operations dramatically that were relying on Sharpe’s quick decision’s. Waiting half an hour in some cases, could cost lives. She knew Sharpe was a field commander, not an armchair general, so this sort of environment was extremely alien to him, and he had no idea that his demands often made things worse. She knew that if he knew, he’d be in at 0400 when the reports came in, ready to make decisions, which was not what was good for the man.

“I have the morning digest, sir.” She said.

Richard growled, resenting her continuing desire to make him work as early as possible, but it made for a peaceful life. “Very well.” He said, sipping his tea from a large mug.

“We received confirmation that Easy Company has begun their assault on the communications relay earlier this morning.” She said. “Naturally, we will know more when the AWACs are able to do a fly-by, but that won’t be for another three hours from now, due to the heightened alert status of the Romulan defences.”

“Order them to do a fly-by now.” Richard said. “Have Lennox’s squadron provide support, and also pass along my order to ignore my standing orders of playing it safe, and to give full air support to Easy Company, regardless of the air defences. Have them take them out if needs be.”

“Yes sir.” Francine said, noting this down, wondering when Richard would get around to repealing that order. Not that it was a bad order, just that it tied the hands of on the spot commander’s too much.

“Operation NightHawk is still being stonewalled by the Klingon’s.” Francine reported, looking at the padd. “But I’ll deal with that for you sir.”

“Appreciated, Francine.” Richard said, smiling.

“Its my job, sir.” She said, not revelling in the thoughts of what she might be called to do to secure Klingon support.

“How is Operation Valkrye coming along?” He asked.

“Well sir, 1st Battalion are en-route to take over station-keeping from 2nd, so as to free them up for the actual mission. Colonel Strayer says that logistically, everything is ready to go.” Francine said. “Brigadier Stirling is coming out from UNITY to take over operations here on your request.”

“Good.” Richard said, flipping through the PADDs. Stirling was far more at home in a command centre than Richard was, and would be ten times better at co-ordinating the station, relations with their allies as well as the battle group. This could free Richard up to head up Operation Valkrye, a high risk operation that called for the entire resources of 2nd Battalion. Once Easy was done on Norris 8, they would be replaced by men from the 1st Battalion, freeing them up to spearhead Valkrye. “Have the senior officers meet me in the conference room for a full briefing on Valkrye in an hour.”

“Yes sir.” Francine said. She would be staying on Padassa to assist Stirling, which suited her just fine, since she wasn’t a field officer, and didn’t really want to be.

“Oh, and drag Harper out of whatever hole he’s dug for himself, and tell him to turn up as well.” Richard said, speaking ill of his command sergeant major, yet once more. He knew that Harper tended to let himself go a bit when not on duty, and since he was on a week furlow right now, chances are he would be in a bar or the brig.

[USS Chimera] 240909.07 ||SB 234: UNITY|| NPC Duty Log, Capt. Trent Rodgers

=Main Brig=
=Starbase UNITY=

Trent stood at the entrance way to the cells when a security officer walked up to him.

"Sir, what can I do for you?" the officer, a lieutenant (j.g.) asked.

Instead of answering right away, Trent made his way to Chloe Utley's cell, who was curled up on her bunk, making certain that she was aware of his presence.

"Lieutenant, I am here to question the commander," Trent finally said in a very low, dark tone, but loud enough for Utley to hear.

"Sir? I did not receive any ..."

Trent interrupted, "You are going to do three things, lieutenant. First, you are going to lower the force field to Ms. Utley's cell. Then, you are going to turn off all recording and monitoring devices to her cell. And third, you are going to leave me and the commander alone."

"But, sir, this is highly irregular. I can't ..."

"Lieutenant," Trent inrerrupted again, keeping a foreboding stare on Utley. "You are going to do these things. You are going to do them and you are going to do them in the order that I stated. Do you understand?"

"But sir, I can not without ..."

Trent sharply turned and faced the security officer, "Do you understand!"

"Sir, I ..."

"This is not up for discussion. File whatever reports you deem necessary, but you will do what I have told you to do. Consider it an order from the XO of this base, which it is."

The lieutenant took a deep, nervous breath. With Mumacik out of action and unable back him up, he had no intention in confronting the captain any further.

"Aye, sir," the security officer finally, reluctantly said as he walked back to his station, lowered the force field to Utley's cell and turned off the monitoring devices before leaving the room.

Utley, who had watched the exchange, slid further back on the bunk as Trent entered the cell. The lieutenant commander and former starbase CEO was now sitting at the head of the bunk, as far in the corner of the cell as she could get. Trent saw the fear in her eyes, which was his intent. He looked like a man capable of anything and she truly didn't know why.

"Commander, a few hours ago, there was an explosion in one of our cargo bays resulting in several deaths. Now, while I know you were not directly involved in the attack, I do believe you know who was responsible."

"Sir, I know nothing about ..."

"You know, commander. Years ago, I was a security officer like that man who just left us. But, unlike him, I was reprimanded on more than one occassion for my treatment of prisoners," it was a lie, but she didn't know that. "How I've been able to remain in starfleet as long as I have is a complete and total mystery."

Trent took a seat in a chair on the other side.

"Tell me what you know, commander."

"I don't know anything about an explosion."

"Bullshit," Trent spat out. "You know, upon further reflection, you were probably the ringleader of the whole affair. Who knows what else your minions have planned. How more people do you plan on killing, Ms. Utley?"

"I don't know what you're talking about," she responded, trying not to sound concerned.

Trent shook his head, "There's only one way to deal with terrorists."

The XO pulled out a knife and looked it over against the cell's light.

"You know what this is, don't you?" Trent continued calmly, keeping his focus on the blade. "Just in case you don't, it a d'k tahg. I've had it for a long time and have become quite masterful in it's use."

Trent placed the blade back in it's sheath. He never hand any intention in using it.

"Now, I'm not a violent person, but when it comes to the safety of this starbase and all of those on board, then I'll do what is necessary," Trent said as he leaned forward. "Tell me, commander. who were you working for when you were caught planting surveillance devices throughout the base?"

She took a deep breath and then another.

"I ... I don't know for sure. But I believe they were romulans."

"You BELIEVE they were romulans. You were betraying the Federation and you have no idea who you were working for."

"They ... they approached me. Before the war. Two men. They threatened to ... to kill my parents and my little sister if I didn't help."

Trent just continued to stare at Chloe as tears formed in her eyes.

"My ... my father was in charge of a geological expedition near the neutral zone. My mother and little sister were a part of that expedition. A month before the war they, along with the rest of their team, were captured by the romulans and sent back to Romulus. A week or so before the attack on UNITY, I was told that I had to do whatever these men said or that they would kill the entire expedition. They said that I wouldn't have to blow up the station or kill anybody or anything like that. All I had to do was disconnect something here or there. Overlook some of my duties. Minor things really. Nothing that would threaten the starbase."

Any anger that Trent had felt disappeared. It was like history repeating itself. His one-time best friend Ernie Walls had Trent tortured for security codes because a man had threatened to kill Ernie's sister and her family. Unfortunatly, when Ernie was caught, the man had followed through with the threat and Trent still had to have the Ernie, who was his best man at his wedding, imprisoned.

Trent thought back to that moment in Ernie's jell cell on Starbase Aurora.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

"Damn it, Ernie. Damn it," Trent, then a security chief on the Archer, muttered.

"I'm sorry about what we did to you," Ernie said. "That was the last thing I wanted to do."

"I don't give a damn what you did to me," Trent said. "No ... no, correct that, I do give a damn. You had me tortured. You had them cut off my fingers. You were going to have me killed."

"I wouldn't have allowed them to kill you," Ernie explained. "I would've came up with something."

"Doesn't matter," Trent said. "What does matter is that you are going to prison, perhaps for a long time."

There was a short pause.

"All you had to do was ask for my help," Trent continued as he turned and left the brig.

-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

Back in the present ...

"And the surveillance devices?" Trent asked, trying to focus on the matter at hand.

"They told me to do that about a month ago. I asked why and they said that it was none of my concern. They were not planted in any secure areas, so I didn't see any harm," Chloe Utley explained.

Trent shook his head, "No matter the reason, what you did was treasonous. You should have asked for help."

She shook her head, "I couldn't do that. I couldn't take the risk."

As he sighed, Trent rubbed his eyes.

"I didn't know anything about any explosives," Chloe continued as tears flowed down her cheeks. "I swear. They told me only what they needed me to know. I was unaware of anything else. I ... I didn't want anyone hurt."

Trent stood and looked down at Chloe.

"You betrayed the Federation, Ms. Utley. For that, you will be dealt with accordingly."

Trent headed for the cell doorway.

"Sir!"

Trent stopped, but didn't turn to face her.

"Could you ... could you find out anyway possible the status of my family," she begged.

Trent took a deep breath.

"I'll see what I can do," he said in almost a whisper as he exited the cell and turned on the force field and monitoring devices.

[USS Chimera] ||UNITY|| SD 240909.07 Joint Duty Log, Jr. Counselor & CO, 2nd Lieutenant Mnemosyme Nyx & RAdm. Shane Guzman

"shane.guzman@mojwap.sk" <shane.guzman@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

=/\= Mnemosyme's Quarters =/\=

Nym laid on the sofa and stared at the ceiling. {Good news
I don't think anyone noticed the help I gave the lieutenant
and according to the docs I only have a concussion. I only
have to lay here for a day and then back to work as usual.}

The two security guards assigned to guard in front of Nyx's
quarters snapped a salute and stood to attention when
realized who came to question the junior counselor.

At the sound of the chime Mnemosyme jumped as she was
startled from her thoughts and the soft noise seemed to echo
in the silence that surrounded her. She swung her feet to
the floor and stood in one smooth movement and regretted it
as her vision momentarily blurred and a queasiness signal
its presence in the pit of her stomach. She took a deep
breath and went to push the button beside the door. "What
could Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum possibly want," she said
softly to herself.

"Lieutenant Nyx, I am Admiral Guzman" Shane introduced
himself as soon as the door to Nyx's quarters opened. "I am
here to question you about the explosion event in front of
explosive carbo bay three"

{Is that my heart thundering ... deep breath.} "Of course,
Sir ... Come in." She remembered her last run in with the
man before her and knew her answers would be short.

Arriving in sickbay, Shane learned about the status of his
Chief of fleet security. Mumacik was lucky to be alive, nine
other security guys were not so lucky. When informed about
the romulan origin of two 'marines', Shane realized that
this was far more then an accident or a simple terrorist
attack. This was surely work of Romulan Intel … and to be
taken seriously. He would normally assign Mumacik to the
case, but since the guy was barely alive, he had none else
with enough trust to deal with the case. Doing the obvious,
he took charge of the investigation himself.

Asked to come inside, Shane (and his four body guards) came
inside Nyx's quarters. Nyx looked not very well herself, but
after the event it was not a big surprise. Shane seated
himself on a chair opposing the counselor and asked: "Let's
keep this simple and informal as possible. I'd like to hear
your story about the explosion. When did it happen, why were
you there and whet did you do … please"

Mnemosyme seated herself back on the furniture and ignored
the goon squad. "I was having trouble sleeping and went for
a jog. The corridors over by the cargo bay aren't very
busy.. especially at that time." She paused to think what
first alerted her that there was a problem. Giving her head
a shake; {poor manners} she stood suddenly. Her hand raised
to her temple and she slowly blew out a breath, "I'm sorry,
would you like a drink?"

Shane raised an eyebrow at the sudden change of topic. It
was a habit learned very long ago from a fellow Vulcan
tactical officer on SB Aurora. "No, thank you, Lieutenant"
Shane said, "nothing for me, but please serve yourself"

"And the party?" She made eye contact with everyone of the
guards now standing around her small great room.

None answered. Their job was to keep the Admiral alive and
unhurt and usually none of the cohort spoke to the Admiral a
word during the entire shift. Shane smiled and said: "I
think we are all fine, please continue, Lieutenant"

She was still in full view of everyone at the replicator
when she continued, "I heard a loud noise and then the floor
seemed to roll on me. I barely remained on my feet and then
I just instinctively went to see if I could be of some
help."

"Do you jog in that area regularly?" Shane asked, "anyone
who can confirm your statement?"

"It would be more accurate to say that I regularly jog and
occasionally in that area." Returning to her seat with a
glass of water. She sat crossed leg on the sofa, holding
her glass. "I don't know if anyone can confirm that fact. I
really try to avoid talking to others while I'm jogging."

It was not that Shane would think that Nyx would be a
traitor and worked together with the enemy. But after the
issue with Commander Utley, who was planting surveying
devices all along the station, there were very few, Shane
trusted. He watched the counselor carefully, trying to read
her heart. "Was there a single explosion or maybe two or
three?" he asked. "Did you hear any voices, conversation?"

Mnemosyme tapped her fingers along the side of her glass and
consider the Admiral's questions. {I was trained to take
things in ... what did I disregard as not important at the
time. Number of explosions? Passers by?} Someone clearing
their throat dragged her from her thoughts and another such
sound brought her fingers to a halt. Her eyesight seemed to
focus more sharply in the present as she met Shane's gaze.
"I only remember one explosion. And yes, I do remember some
voices but just barely and adjusted my course away from
them."

Shane went on with the questioning and asked: "Did you meet
anyone during your jog?" For some reason, Shane believed
that something was not all right with the counselor. Not
that she was lying or telling half truth, but she was on
alert for some reason.

"Yes, one or two people but I didn't pay much attention...
they were dressed much like.." She gestured to the guards
in the room around them. She rubbed her temples and was
glad to find that her head didn't seem to be aching as much.
{The cut there at the temple doesn't seems as tender
either... hhmmm...}

Shane nodded. It looked like that Nyx was just a accidental
part of the explosion and could provide only limited amount
of information.

"Unless you have any more questions, Sir, I hate to admit
I'm feeling a bit fatigued and perhaps I should get some
rest." She took a swig from her water glass and watched the
Admiral.

It was indeed the time to end the questioning and follow
other clues – while they were still hot, but there was
something … something that irritated the Admiral, but he
could not say what it was. The counselor really did not look
well, but somehow it looked like that the wound on her head
was somewhat smaller. Shane blinked and rubbed his eyes. "I
am sorry Lieutenant for troubling you that long" he said at
last. {Must be a trick of light or something} he said to
himself. Standing up from the chair, he added: "Until this
investigation is closed, please do not leave UNITY. If you
are in need to leave the station, contact my office for
prior clearance. If there will be anything you might
remember about, please contact me asap. Thank you for now
…"

"Yes, of course," she readily agreed as she stood and walked
the Admiral and his entourage to the door.

[USS Chimera] [ALPHA] SD240909.06 | Duty Log | 2LT T'Shal [NPC] | PL-E

=/-\= Begin Log =/-\=

Location: Norris VIII-A

Time: 1200 Hours, Federation Standard Time

For the first time since the beginning of the assault silence was prevalent across the frost-covered battlefield on the moon of Norris VIII.

Where only moments before the sound of disruptor and phaser fire had pierced through the installation, now only echos could be heard bounding off the mountainsides surrounding the buildings. Bits and pieces of rubble and debris were still pittering to the ground, and the surface was choked with smoke. Most of the soldiers of Third Platoon found themselves on the ground, dodging the fallout and finding cover under whatever they could.

Second Lieutenant T'Shal was no exception; she was huddled next to a Corporal of the platoon, both gripping their rifles and listening for any sound of movement in the chaos beyond.

The massive explosion, while throwing anyone nearby to their knees, had thankfully been far enough away to spare their lives. Third Platoon had been stationed around a trio of buildings, fighting to keep the Romulan surges back from the bunker that Second Platoon had infiltrated. Apparently Second Platoon had traveled a fairly long distance underground; otherwise that explosion would have destroyed the entire area that Third now occupied.

"Corporal, do not move from this location," T'Shal ordered before pushing to her feet. It was a short move, almost dive really, to the next cover. As she moved she had expected the Romulan defenders to resume their attack, but nothing came. Apparently they had been taken by Just as much surprise as the Marines had.

Moving to rest alongside her Platoon Sergeant, the Vulcan woman pointed at the blown-out wall Spiers had used to gain access to the underground tunnels, "Take Third Squad and see if you can find anyone left alive. But do not linger; there is more that requires our attention."

"Yes, ma'am," the Kriosian man, Jalanak, replied before motioning for the squad to follow him into the building.

Turning back towards the rest of the group she motioned towards the leaders of first and second squad, telling them to regroup and close the holes left by the departure of the others. If they were to continue to guard the entrance, then it would require immediate action. If the Romulans resumed their attacks before the Marines had repositioned themselves it would spell disaster.

Hopelessness is an emotion, T'Shal chided herself. Now is not the time for such foolishness.

"Kilmer, Dorva," he called out to two more of her units; both turned their heads in her direction. With a hand she pointed to the stairway in the far corner of the burnt-out building, then to its second story. Her purpose clear they moved out. The Marines providing cover fire from above may have seen more of what happened or, if they had been killed, needed to be replaced.

In the distance, on an exterior upper level of the communications center, T'Shal watched as a number of First Platoon reentered the building through an emergency hatch.

"Farr  gol'nev ask'er," she muttered under her breath, knowing that only time would show the result of this endeavor…
