[USS Chimera] SD 240910.05 | Duty Log | MGen. Richard Sharpe

=/\= MCS Imperial – En route to Anaxis =/\=

The Imperial wasn’t much of a ship to look at from the inside, Richard mused. Marine engineers were brilliant however, in that they’d got ahold of a Galaxy Refit, torn out all its interior with the exception of key ships systems, and found space for over two thousand marines, plus equipment, and space on the lower decks for an armoured company. The downside to this was that luxurious appointments were sparse, and there was a definite utilitarian feel to quarters, which were at half-size anyway, due to the need to fit as many single berth quarters as possible for officers.

He stood, looking out the single window, his hands clasped behind his back, admiring the stars as they shot past at warp speed. Wearing his green BDU’s, with two stars on either collar lapel in the black subdued style, he felt ready for the fight. So why was he feeling this way? Was it the impending thought of a combat jump after nearly 10 years since he’d done one? Or was it something more? Could it be the thought that this time, he’d be leaving someone behind if he died?

For the first time in a very long time, he had someone who would miss him if he died. He’s survived everything that the service had thrown at him time and time again. Hell, he’d taken the worst the Romulan’s had thrown at him several times already, in previous wars. Tanaris IV, where he’d steadied the line against the Praetorian Guard, against General Jaeih, the most formidable woman the Romulan military had ever produced. Or Kreos Prime, where he’d held out against forces of the legendary 85th Legion, for eight days, unsupplied and unsupported.

So why was this time any different? He’d beaten the Romulan’s before, and damnit, he’d do it again. He’d teach those pointy eared bastards what it meant to mess with the green machine! However, he was beginning to regret opting to lead this battle himself. He wasn’t a young man, not by any means, and he’d known of general’s and other senior ranks who’d gotten good men killed protecting them from themselves. Could he be one of them?

The door opened behind him, and standing in the doorway, wearing his own BDU’s and jump harness, stood Harper. “Its time, Richard.” He said.

Richard nodded, and grabbing his jump harness and combat webbing, he left the dark cold room behind him with Harper.

Everywhere Richard looked, he could see young men and women, who wore eager expressions on their face. He looked down the craft at Lt. Winters, who looked lost in thought, as if contemplating his own death. He’d seen looks like this before in men, who were preparing for what they felt was a desperate fight.

Standing up, Richard looked to Harper, who seemed to be able to read Richard’s mind. He started to sing:

“He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright.
He checked off his equipment and made sure his pack was tight.
He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar.
You ain't gonna jump no more.”

Everyone in the craft looked to both the General and the Command Sergeant Major, as if they’d gone mad, but soon their faces wore broad grins as they recognized the Ballard of the airborne. Everyone in the small craft started to sing along:

“Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die!
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die!
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die!
He ain't gonna jump no more!”

Richard wore a grin as he walked down the craft, as the marines were sitting on a bench on either side of the fuselage. He was waving his arms like a conductor as they sung, he looked at Winters, who seemed to find this all rather amusing.

“The risers swung around his neck, connectors cracked his dome.
Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones.
The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.”

They’d already reached the fourth verse when the Lieutenant at the conn shouted back into the cabin. “One minute to drop!”

Still singing, they stood up and made their way to the tailgate, ready to jump into the atmosphere.

“There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the 'chute.
Intestines were a-dangling from his paratrooper suit.
He was a mess, they picked him up and poured him from his boots.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.”

They’d just sung the last verse, and were at the chorus when the red light came on. Richard was at the front of one row, and Winters the other. The age old tradition of the airborne lived on, and the officer was always the first one out of the aircraft. Richard looked to Winters, who was singing as well, and they both sang:

“Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
He ain't gonna jump no more.”

The green light came on, and Richard jumped into oblivion with the men and women of 1st Platoon, Easy Company.

The dark skinned XO's speech paused for a moment before saying
quietly. "EAS Overlord is still out of contact after four days and
EAS Market Garden went silent fifty three hours ago. We'll have to
assume EAS Overlord is gone and EAS Market Garden is unlikely to be
back in contact..."

"So that leaves just us, all alone in the night. It's strange to to
think we are the probably the last remaining aspect of the Alliance
which only a generation ago was expanding and enjoyed the loyalty of
many skilled commanders and generals, plenty of whom were deserving of
the title of legend. None left now. If we had just one of them here
we could probably win this..." Nikolai said sadly.

"We have a legend in our day and age too. You are still here Colonel
and it's time to make the decision what to do next. Do we join up
with what's left of Starfleet in the Delta Quadrant and help them
fight the Borg? Or do we try and build up our power reserves and
weaponry by getting what we can from the remains of the Supply Network
and checking the Deep Storage Repositories?" Holtzman said as they
entered the bridge.

Nikolai shook his head. "Starfleet is losing the battle and still
they refuse to acknowledge the greater threat we all face. No Major,
they chose their own path and it is not ours to follow. The
Repositories and Network have both been heavily expended and likely
checking them will use more resources than we will gain. We only have
one option left...we have to storm the Romulan gate in the stellar
nursery within Sector 315."

"That would require us to break through three Romulan and Breen lines
of defense and we're not talking about small numbers of ships in those
line Colonel. Even the Samson would be destroyed before we reached
the gate." Major Holtzman said sharply.

"Which is why we wont be taking the 'conventional' route Major. Now
that we are the last Tyrant Class Warship (TCW1G) left we are the only
ones left with Dimension Rippers that function in this universe at
least until the enemy figures out how to make them work." Nikolai
said.

"The enemy can track us when we use the Rippers, Colonel...but of
course you already know that. We can continue to evade the enemy
normally until we come up with another option..." Holtzman replied.

Putting a faint bit of menace into his voice "The only option left
other than the gate is to flee for as long as possible until the enemy
finally runs us to ground. If we storm the gate and break through we
at least have a chance. There's nothing left for us here. The
Alliance is dead and gone, the Federation has fallen and what little
is left of Starfleet and the KDF is hiding and dying in the delta
quadrant. If we do this right we can slam the door in the enemy's
face."

With a sigh Major Holtzman gave a tired nod before bellowing to the
bridge crew. "All hands prepare for battle stations. Bring the Omega
Reactor online and raise weaponry power levels to immediate readiness.
Stand by to charge the Dimension Rippers...EAS Samson has a date with
destiny."

Nikolai woke to the sound of a peal of thunder and the sound of heavy rain.  Groggily he couldn't place where he was.  For a moment he thought he was at his parent's house on Erass Prime but that thought dredged up more painful memories and the cold reality became evident.  In his groggy state he couldn't quite recall when he had made his way to bed numb with exhaustion.  Rising from his bed he depolarized the 'windows' and looked out at the landscape.  There was a flash of lightning in the distance.

"One...Two...Three...Four...Five"

A peal of thunder roared its fury.  He waited a few moments before the next flash in the distance.

"One...Two...Three...Four"

The thunderclap roared loudly.  The storm was getting closer.  These days that seemed to nearly always be the case.  Yawning he made his way to the en suite bathroom where he indulged in a five minute hot water shower...one of the few privileges of rank.  Upon exiting the bathroom Nikolai felt more awake and dressed in a fresh uniform.  He broke fast on one of the standard ration packs, supposedly bacon, sausage and beans but the accuracy of the description was doubtful.

He left his small quarters and made his way down the hallway towards the bridge.  Three quarters of the way along the corridor the XO, Major Claude Holtzman exited one of the Strategic Planning Rooms fell into step alongside Nikolai.  "So how long was I asleep for ?"

"Sixteen Hours, Colonel"  The XO replied in his distinct way keeping his eyes focused ahead not even glancing at Nikolai.

"I missed my shift.  Why didn't you wake me Major?"  Nikolai asked.

"Colonel you were up for over seventy two hours evading enemy units whilst moving us successfully through their area of active operations.  With all due respect, you needed as much rest as you could get and no man on this ship will say otherwise.  Besides the ship is safe in this nebula for the time being."  The XO replied in his slightly accented french voice.

"What are we getting from our intelligence department?"  Nikolai asked although he personally dreaded the answer.

The dark skinned XO's speech paused for a moment before saying quietly.   "EAS Overlord is still out of contact after four days and EAS Market Garden went silent fifty three hours ago.  We'll have to assume EAS Overlord is gone and EAS Market Garden is unlikely to be back in contact..."

[USS Chimera] SD 240910.04 | NPC Log | LCpl. Dawson, PFC. Franklin, PFC. Holland, Pvt. Stone

OOC: This is a very quick, short log, to cover what the marine fire-team found on the planet that is about to be bombarded to hell.

=/\= Runabout Celeste =/\=

“Alright, listen up!” Dawson said, as he entered the aft cabin. “Captain Chisulo wants us to perform a hostage extraction op, before the Hermes opens up its hell fury on the site where the hostages are being held.”

“Are they waiting on our call, Harry?” PFC Franklin asked.

“No, they’re going to do it whether we’re there or not.” Dawson said. “Cap’n says the General won’t call off the strike, and is prepared to nuke the hostages. Cap’n don’t want that, so wants us to extract them as fast as possible.”

“No disrespect, Corp, but the captain’s a f***ing nutter!” Stone said, growling.

“Damn straight!”

“No way!”

“Quiet, all of you!” Harold snapped. “We’ve got our orders, and we’re gonna follow them!”

“But corp…” Stone startd.

“No buts.” Harry said. “I’m not an idiot. Franklin, go into a low orbit. Keep the cloak up, and scan for their lifesigns. I’m not going in if they’re dead.”

Private Franklin moved to the pilots controls and took the runabout into a lower orbit, to detect for lifesigns. They had to get in very close to use the high intensity sensor array to confirm the readings.

“Harold, I’m not detecting the lifesigns of the hostages. However, I am picking up several bodies that read the same as the hostages bio-signs.” Franklin said. “Looks like they were executed.”

“Stupid people.” Harold said. “Take us back up, before they blast the crap out of us.”

“Yes Corporal.” Franklin said.

“Soon as we’re clear of the ionosphere, send a message to Captain Chisulo that the hostages were already dead, so extraction was called off.”
