[USS Chimera] SD 240910.24 | Duty Log | MGen. Richard Sharpe

=/\= Anaxis =/\=

=/\= Main Supply Road – D-Day + 1 =/\=

Another loud explosion in the building behind him told Richard that the Romulan artillery was trying to pound the marines concentrated on the MSR. Another boom, and the earth on his left flank exploded, sending debris and the remains of two troopers flying in all directions.

Just when they’d thought they’d had it made, the Romulan’s had done something that no one expected. They’d played Possum, and let the enemy roll in, and then hit them when their flanks were exposed. As a feat of tactical planning, it was pure genius. The marines were caught out in the open, along the road that divided the city, and were being hit on both their flanks at the same time by heavy artillery and infantry, being supported by armour that had been stored underneath the city, and had thusly been unnoticed.

Overhead, elements of the 414th Squadron were running strafing runs of the left flank, firing their pulse phasers into the buildings, trying to give the bunched up marines support. It was a nightmare scenario, and Richard was caught right in the middle of it. Fitting really, since it was his fault. His own complacency, despite his gut telling him not to over-commit, he’d listened to his advisors, and pushed in, and now they were fighting to retreat.

As soon as the fighting had grown more intensive around the MSR, his staff had rushed in, and insisted that he beam up and save himself. He was having none of that shit, and stood firm. Harper, who had returned with Easy Co. even got involved and insisted Richard beam up, because he was too valuable to be captured or killed. Harper even went as far as to threaten to rat him out to Chloe, when Richard had silenced him with a glare so fierce that everyone backed down.

When the MMCV had been hit, everyone was afraid Richard had bought it, but he clambered out of the wreckage, already in his combat gear, grabbed his M16A2 off of Harper, and had started to fight with the marines. He was covered in soot, muck, grime, dried blood – mostly his own from a very nasty gash on his left leg, right arm and his forehead, but he’d carried on regardless.

As the fighters dropped bombs on the left side, he felt that the right flank was faltering under the intense barrage. Steadying himself on his injured leg, he moved to the right flank, and spotted most of the 2nd Battalion crouched behind a sand bag wall, firing back at the enemy sporadically. Richard moved forward, Harper appeared beside him, also covered in grime, soot and blood, holding Richard’s M60 over his shoulder.

“Hold fire!” Richard shouted. Everyone stopped and looked at him, even some of the Romulan’s. “Make ready!” He shouted, and everyone realised what was about to happen. They cocked their rifles, their heavy machine guns, etc, and waited for the order.

“PRESENT!” Richard barked, and everyone pointed their weapon at something.

“FIRE!” Richard barked, firing his own weapon at a Romulan sticking his head up to look out a window. The entire right side opened fire on Richard’s command.

“Rifles! On me! Machine Guns! Suppressing fire!” He barked at the men, and the rifles got up and started advancing forward, firing in line as Richard lead them. Harper was at Richard’s side, holding his M60 out, hosing anything in their way down.

They made fifty feet into the city, killing just about everything and everyone that moved. A radio man ran up to Richard, and offered him the mouthpiece. “Sharpe here.” He said.

“Sir!” Westman shouted. “What’re your orders?”

“Start the evac. Get the wounded out first, then the dead, then we’ll have to do evac beamouts. Have the Ulysses, the Ticonderoga, the Balmont and the Flemming start combat beamouts, platoon’s at a time.” Richard said.

“Yes sir!” Westman said, and the line went dead.

Richard looked behind him as the vehicles, or those that hadn’t been knocked out anyway, were being beamed up, as well as the wounded and dead. The whole process took about ten minutes, during which time, Richard stayed and held the line. He stayed with his men for as long as he could, until he caught a bullet in the shoulder, which sent him spinning around and flailing on his back. He grunted in pain, grabbing his shoulder.

“Richard!” Harper shouted, and turned to two marines standing nearby. “You two, get the General out of here!”

“Belay that!” Richard snapped, and used his rifle to help him to his feet. He had his hand over the wound on his shoulder, blood oozing through his fingers. He picked up his rifle, released his shoulder, put the handle of the rifle in his blood covered hand, and fired from the hip with his rifle.

“Go!” He shouted at Harper and the other marines. “Get out! Get to the beam out point! I’m right behind you!”

He covered the retreat of the marines he had been fighting with, and an extremely reluctant Harper started to move back, when Richard was hit in the thigh with a bullet. He fell to the ground hard, and gasped in pain as he hit the dirt. Harper ran back to him, grabbed him under his arms, and dragged him backwards towards the beam out point.

The marines who were falling back, spotted this, and ran back to help carry their wounded CO out of danger. They were the last to make it to the MSR, where apart from the burned out wrecks of the tanks that had been knocked out, and the shell of the MMCV, still on fire, there was no one else. The Romulan’s were starting to push through, and Richard felt the familiar tingle of the transporter whisk him away, and the next moment found him on a starship.

He looked around the transporter bay, and spotted the alive and well marines milling around, who turned and spotted who was lying on the floor of the tranporter. Three people barged their way through the crowd, medical officers, and started to scan him.

“He needs to go to sickbay.” One of them said, but Richard pushed him aside.

“No.” He said. “I need to find out the status of the evacuation.”

Without warning, someone had placed a hypo to his neck, and then everything went black.

[USS Chimera] SD 240910.24 || BRAVO || Conference Log || Part I ||

[Main Shuttle Bay (Lower Level) - Deck 16 - USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]

Captain Cropa Rojac was the first out of the Shuttlecraft Serpent's hatch as it lowered to the deck. He waved over the waiting medical team with their gurneys to attend to Cortez and the other deceased members of his squad. Rojac was worried about it, but Fisher had the situation well in hand and it was best to stay out of the doctor's way. Besides - the monstrous ship that came through the gate held a more pressing matter in his line of duties.

Major Walters was standing next to the medical team, and the Captain made his way in their direction.

"Samson maneuver?" Rojac began, "I didn't know that meant summoning a super-ship from an alternate dimension."

"Sometimes I surprise the hell out of even myself Captain.  Usually that means finishing just that little bit ahead of expectations but this..." Walters said before shaking his head.  He couldn't quite wipe the slight grin off his face though.

An operations team moved in to debrief the shuttle crew, so Rojac and Walters began making their way toward Transporter Room 1 to welcome their guests. "What do we know, Major?" Rojac asked, his hands held tight behind his back as they made their way down the hallway toward the turbolift.

"Almost nothing unfortunately.  You probably got as much of the conversation as we did.  Erassian Alliance Starship Samson, commanded by Colonel Nikolai Ivanov.  Judging by the power output of those Arclight Cannons used to destroy the last Thelaron Cruiser and the level of stealth tech on it.  I'd guess at least 25 to 30 years ahead of current Alliance tech which seems to tie in with the assessment from First Task Force HQ on that Harker person's autopsy."  Walters said leading the way into the Turbolift

"Deck four." Rojac ordered the turbolift. "I imagine Major Xerxes is meeting us in the conference room."

"Well I suggested it would be easiest to meet us there but having done that she'll almost definitely not." Walters said wryly stepping out of the turbolift as it stopped.

Sure enough as they stepped into Transporter Room One she was already waiting there still in her flight suit minus the helmet.  Her hair stuck to the side of her face in a few places with perspiration.  Anya turned and looked at them "What took you so long?" She said jokingly.

"I would attribute it to old age, Major, but I wasn't the one called 'Aunty.'" Rojac replied before turning to the Chief Petty Officer manning the room's control console. "Chief, do you have them?" The
Captain asked.

"Aye sir." The engineer responded. "I'm acquiring the lock now. Ready on your order."

Rojac glanced to the man an woman on either side of him. "Places everyone." He took a deep breath. "Energize."

There was the whir of the transporter and standing in front of them was what looked to be a Human male around 25 years of age.  Anya studied him objectively as the transport finished.  He had short, jet black hair and striking blue eyes with a bone structure which looked sculpted by a master.  His body was lean and muscular...Anya abandoned her 'objective' analysis lest she blush.

"Colonel Ivanov, welcome aboard the USS Chimera." Rojac said as the materialization process completed.

"Captain Rojac I presume.  You look quite a bit younger than some of the press photos I've seen of you but that's understandable.  Major Walters you look younger as well, fairly fit and healthy which I take it means the divorce is almost over."  Nikolai turned.  "And you are definitely not the Anya 'Ironheart' Xerxes I remember which I will admit is a good thing."

Anya couldn't tell if that was a compliment or insult so she replied "I don't know you at all Colonel Ivanov, I'll refrain on labeling that good or bad."

Walters looked uncomfortable at Nikolai's words "Pleasure to meet you Colonel Ivanov."

"You assume correctly, Colonel." Rojac said. "I hope in your time that my beard is not too gray." He cracked a smile. "Will you please join us in the Conference room, Colonel?"

Ivanov nodded and Walters turned and gestured before leading them down the hallway.  "This way please people."

When they arrived in the conference room, the guards closed he doors behind them as the group of four took their seats. The Captain sat at the head of the table with his guest to the right of him. Across the table sat Majors Walters and Xerxes.

Cropa crossed his arms atop the table. "You look strikingly familiar, Colonel. I believe I must know both of your parents." He sighed, "But that is a curiosity that can wait for another time. First, I must thank you for arriving when you did. You and your ship have saved my ship and crew. But second I must ask: what the hell is going on?"

"Here and now, on this side of that gate you would know more than I do.  On the other side though...that's something else entirely. Arafel, Ragnarok, Apocalypse, Krazilec, these words are the closest in the human language we have to describing what is happening on the other side of that gate and yet all these words are wrong as within their stories they contain an element which does not exist at the other side of that gate...hope.  There the year is 2439 and the war with the Romulans, Breen and Muhareem has been fought to a bloody stalemate.  Both sides were weakened to the point of mutual collapse and at that point the enemies came in force."  Nikolai paused thinking for a moment, Anya's eyes were boring into him and she gave him an almost imperceptible shake of her head.  Of the two people in this room who he had known in his dimension she was the one he trusted without fail.  "One of them you know well, the Borg."  They had been a player but they weren't the biggest threat.

Walters suppressed a shiver going up his spine as he thought of the horror buried within his old base under Charos VI.  {The end of the world.. I bet they had a hand in it even if this Ivanov doesn't know or isn't saying.}

Anya on the other hand was breathing a silent sigh of relief that he hadn't said the name of the real enemy.  She had seen enough through Prophet to know what Colonel Ivanov's ship was designed to fight.  It wasn't that she distrusted Rojac or Walters but the room hadn't been swept and it wasn't her decision to involve them yet.

[USS Chimera] SD 240910.24 SB UNITY. Duty Log: Commander Rangi Summers

"rangi.summers@mojwap.sk" <rangi.summers@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

*** Med Advisors Office * SB Unity ***

It was late morning and Rangi had planned to work through
her lunch hour and finish early that afternoon, so it was
that instead of a light meal, she was nibbling her way
through five Ginger biscuits and sipping from a tall slim
glass of chilled Apple juice.

She signed a padd and set it neatly on top of the smaller of
the two stacks on the right hand side of her wide desk then
leaned back in her chair but she was feeling cramped and
stiff after sitting for so long and decided to take five
minutes for a change of scene so stood up and walked the
length of her office to the large view port at the end.

A shuttle sped past on its way to the planet, soon
disappearing from sight.
Rangi liked looking out at the world far below and never
tired of it. She often saw shuttles leaving or approaching
Unity, for the traffic was regular and frequent.

Aeran looked a peaceful place and her thoughts turned to the
recent outbreaks of seasonal flu which had caused a need for
some medical staff from Unity to spend over a week there
helping to cover shortages in the main hospital. They had
all returned once the hospitals own staff were fit for duty.

She thought too of the little holiday that she and Shane had
planned to take with Martin beside the Azur Sea. Horrible
circumstances had prevented it but perhaps, she thought,
they could try again at some point.

Staring out of viewports isnt a way to get work done, so she
returned to her desk, sat down and selected a Ginger biscuit
from the three lying on the plate. She took a bite and began
to crunch it, enjoying the taste.
After a sip of juice from her glass, she reached for the
next padd on top of the 'to do' pile and opened it.

She began to read, picking up her biscuit as she did so but
suddenly stopped, her hand suspended midway between plate
and lips and a frown clouding her face.
The news the report contained was not good and the title
itself had caused the frown.
Anything from the + Medical Research Intelligence. Biogenic
Unit + did not make good reading when eating biscuits and
the Ginger one was returned to the plate unfinished.

The subject referred to the six adults and one child rescued
from the Breen freighter.
They had initially been brought to Unity under strict
quarentine protocols but had been transferred to the MRI
unit based on Aphos, an isolated moon in orbit around
Aldebaran in the Alpha Tauri system.

The patients had died one by one in under thirty two hours
despite all efforts to help them.
The 'BFV/A1' virus remained a mystery and research continued
with as yet no conclusion but the report held worring news.

Three cases exhibiting the same symptoms ....fever and
respiratory problems then the dark lines appearing first in
the neck and upper torso...had been reported.
Two were crew of the USS Scavenger and the third from the
USS Wayfarer. All three were in isolation but worse was to
follow.

All three had been part of a medical team at the Aphos'
Biogenic Unit and the implications of that were chilling.

Rangi read the report and sat for a moment as various
scenarios ran through her mind then she pressed the comm
button.

+ Operations. Lieutenant Gee. How may I help you Commander?
+ came a voice in responce.

+ Lieutenant...This is a priority.+ Rangi said
+ I want you to trace three crewmen for me... Pickering and
Karel, currently CMO and CSO respectively on board the USS
Scavenger and Lieutenant Commander Whyles onboard the
Wayfarer.
They were all previously based at the MRI on Aphos. I want
to know the exact dates they joined their ships then I want
you to track the routes of the Scavenger and Wayfarer since
those days...where they've been, where they've docked and
which ship if any has been in contact with them.+

+ Yes ma'am+ came the reply.

+ Copy to be sent to Admiral Guzman. Thankyou.+

Rangi ended the conversation and immediately began another,
this time talking to Pakosii.

As she had feared, Pakosii stated that Shane was in a
meeting so she requested that he be told immediately she
needed to talk to him and stressed that it was of the utmost
importance.

Pakosii, an expert in fielding requests for Shanes time was
also accomplished in knowing when 'utmost importance' was
actually true or a just a ploy. He did not need to ask for
further details but simply requested with his unfailing
politeness, that she " Wait one moment please."

Rangi waited, her fingers tapping quickly on the desk as her
eyes glanced at the half eaten biscuit then back to the
screen as Pakosii announced he was connecting the call.

"Shane?" Rangi said calmly. " We have a potential problem."

[USS Chimera] SD240910.22 ||PROJECT LOS ALAMOS|| Duty Log, Cdr Rick Rodgers and Trevor Wright

=Main Engineering=
=Starbase UNITY=

Rick watched silently as several of his engineers worked away on one of the starbase's main reactors. The CEO was directly overseeing maintenance work that he believed would improve power output which, in turn, would allow for more power consumption throughout the starbase. This meant that not only would more facilities be allowed onto the station, but that science and engineering would be able to conduct more intense projects that required the additional juice. In addition, should the base be attacked, this allowed for more power to shields and weapons systems.

"Sir, we should have the first phase of work completed in the next couple of hours," Ensign Halowack said.

"We're still falling behind on the timetable that I gave Admiral Guzman," Rick stated.

"Rick, if I may speak freely..."

"Of course, Nick."

"That timetable you gave the admiral was overly ambitious."

Rick shook his head, "No, Nick. We just need to pick up the pace. I know we're more than able to complete the project in the time I allotted."

"But Rick ..."

"We WILL get back on schedule," Rick interrupted, then looked at the ensign. "Right?"

"Sir?"

"Right?"

"Of course. No problem. If you will excuse me, I need to get back to work."

Rick allowed for a slight grin as the ensign hurried off. These were good engineers, but they had been lacking any sort of motivation during Utley's reign as CEO. He expected more from them than she did. She allowed for slacking. He did not.

"You know, commander, I really think you're wasting your time and talents here."

Rick turned around and saw Trevor Wright staring at him. Rick noticed that Wright had a small security detail with him.

"I disagree," Rick replied. "What brings you here?"

Wright and Rick watched the engineers work.

"You may not think so, but in you I see somebody who should be accomplishing so much more," Wright said.

"I am quite satisfied with my work," Rick said. "I may not be the mad scientist that you are, but I contribute in my own way."

"Satisfied ... contribute ... words used by those with limited abilities."

"You haven't answered my question."

"No, I suppose I haven't. Can we speak in your office?"

"If you insist," Rick said as he led Wright and his detail to his office. After scanning the office for any listening devices, Wright ordered the security detail to wait outside. Meanwhile, Wright took a unoffered seat on Rick's small couch, while Rick pulled up a chair. "OK, now answer my question."

"What I am about to tell you, no one else on this starbase knows. It must remain that way for now. Understood."

Rick nodded.

"Starfleet is ordering the continued development of the TechEx," Wright said.

Rick stared at Wright for a moment before looking away.

"I thought Admiral Guzman ordered it disassembled."

"He did, but his superiors belayed that order."

The room was quiet for several seconds.

"I take it they're serious about using it," Rick finally said.

Wright nodded, "At first, I considered telling starfleet to go to hell. But, after I thought about it, I realized that perhaps they're right. Maybe the TechEx is the only way we can end this war."

"And unleash a terrible weapon onto the galaxy. One that we might not be able to control. This is insane."

"Yes, it is insane. But war can drive people to insanity," Wright said.

There was more silence.

"Why are you telling me?" Rick asked.

"I want you to help me," Wright said.

"What?"

"I want you to help me during the final phase of the TechEx's development."

"No."

"Commander ..."

"Why me?" Rick asked.

"Because you know more about the device than just about anybody else. You studied it when you discovered it on the Detector. With the exception of myself, you are the foremost expert on the TechEx."

"You give me way too much credit," Rick said.

"No, I don't. I want you to join the small team I'm forming."

"I will not."

"Commander ..."

"I will not be a part of this. I will not be a part of the development of this weapon. I find the whole idea appalling And you do, too."

"Rick, the TechEx is practically finished. All I need is some bright people to help fine tune it in time for a test later next month."

"No, I won't," Rick said.

"Commander, I have it in my authority to order anyone's assistance I deem necessary. Including yours."

"You wouldn't!"

"I would. I'm not completely confident in the TechEx's range and power. There are way too many unknown parameters and variables for my taste. I could use your help with that. A fresh mind, if you will."

"I'm busy here. I don't have time to ..."

"We'll make time," Wright stood. "I have already made out your temporary transfer papers. We leave in the morning."

Wright headed for the door, but stopped just shy.

"I don't want this anymore than you do. But we can't always do what we like. Sometimes we have to just accept things for what they are."

Wright exited the room, leaving an angry CEO behind.
