" I've told your people already." the young woman said with
more than an air of strained patience.
"Then please tell me " Rangi insisted." ...You might have
forgotten something...something insignificant...begin at the
beginning...please."

Georgia Peggs usually pretty face was cast into a frown and
she stared at Rangi as though wondering whether to flatly
refuse which was indeed the case.
She turned away, brushing her hand over her long shining
brown hair that fell in a curtain across her face. Her slim
figure paced across the small room, turned and came back.

" Right..." she said. " I recently returned from a trip home
to visit my parents who live on Danubia 3 and we went to
celebrate our engagement but my fiance Ed Halliday was sent
off on a long range patrol one day before we were due to
leave so I returned alone. I came here by passenger shuttle
four days ago and was meant to restart my job in Harrimans
bar this afternoon!"
She looked pointedly at the chrono.

"On the shuttle, I felt unwell...a bit headachey but nothing
worse than that. It had been an exciting weekend, lots of
celebration with my family and friends and then the long
journey back, well...its not unusual to feel a bit tired is
it?"
She paused and Rangi nodded understanding.

Georgia sighed, impatient to have to repeat again what she
had already said to a nurse and then a doctor.
" I took a couple of Finidax...the medication I always use
for a headache..went to bed and slept it off. I've felt
perfectly well ever since then...as I told the other doctor
earlier."

Rangi nodded again.
"You havent had any nausea or aches or pains of any kind?"
she asked.

" No..none at all." Georgia replied.

" Have the headaches returned?"

" No."

" Have you felt feverish..had a cough or signs of a cold?"

" No!!" Georgia scowled. " I've told you...I feel perfectly
alright. I'm a bit...." she stopped, suddenly realizing that
she had said too much but Rangi immediatley prompted " A bit
what?"

Georgia turned away and took a few paces then looked back
over her shoulder. " I'm just fed up." she said and looked
down at the floor.
" I'm missing Ed if you want to know. We had such a happy
time and then he was sent away at short notice and now...all
this." she said and glared at Rangi as though it was her
fault.

" I know...I'm sorry." Rangi said " I realize you dont want
to stay here but..."

" You can bet your boots I dont!" Georgia said, her patience
finally snapping. " You have no right to keep me here...no
right at all to lock me in a room and go over and over
something I've already explained before! What's wrong with
you people? Havent you got anything better to do with your
time?"

" Miss Pegg...."

" You can let me out...right now!" Georgia demanded. " Dont
try to 'soft soap me because it wont work. I'm perfectly fit
and well....W-E-L-L...well! I only came in here to ask
someone what 'this' is...and you lock me in a room as though
I'm some sort of criminal!"

She had pulled back her left sleeve and exposed her lower
arm and now stood staring at Rangi waiting for an
explanation.

Rangi looked at the arm and then at Georgias face.
" We need to do a few tests." she began.

" Ive had tests." Georgia retorted. " ..and I'm not having
anymore until you let me out of here..today...now."

She pulled down her sleeve, covering the network of dark
lines that showed through her pale skin.

" I'm afraid that wont be possible." Rangi replied quietly.
"..and I can only ask that you cooperate with us. It could
be that the cause of your...skin condition...is a little
more serious than it looks."

Georgia took a few slow steps forward until she stood at the
window and laid her hands on the ledge.

"Its something bad isnt it?" she said, her anger diminished
and replaced by a suspicious tone. " You know something that
you're not telling me...thats why you've locked me in this
room isnt it? That's why you want to go over and over
things...thats it isnt it? You're hiding something."

Rangi glanced sideways to where a guard stood just olutside
the door of the small room that Georgia occupied. He was
staring straight ahead and hadnt questioned why he was to
keep the woman inside. As far as he was concerned he had
orders and would carry them out but the events were
interesting him all the same.

Rangi remet Georgias gaze.
"We need to find out a little more about your condition."
she said. "..and until we can give you the all clear then
I'm afraid you will have to stay in quarentine...hopefully
not for too long."

Georgias shoulders slumped as though she had given in and
hadnt the strength to argue further.

" Can I send a message to Ed?" she asked.

" Ofcourse. " Rangi replied. "There's no restriction on you
doing that...but you have to remain in your room...for the
time being."

Georgia turned away and walked to the bed set against the
far wall. She sat down on it and stared dejectedly at the
floor. After a moment Rangi too turned away and left the
outer room, catching the guards eye as she passed him.
