<<OOC: happens after a JL we are about to finish and send
between General Sharpe and LT. Mumacik>>

======= Office of Fleet level security Chief, SB 234: UNITY
======

Signing the document, Mumacik pressed the "SEND" button and
waited two seconds before the computer confirmed sending the
message. It was addressed to SB 234: UNITY JAG department,
SB 234: UNITY XO and USS Chimera CO. It contained an
official charge of unauthorized entry, Starfleet property
stealing and action conducting unworthy a Starfleet officer
against Major Cortez and two other members of USS Chimera
security department.

The case was relatively simple. Cortez & co. performed a
nice little plan to acquire weapons belonging to USS Chimera
that were sealed in a secure cargo bay. Their plan
succeeded, but it was not very hard to track their actions
down. UNITY was a SSF Starbase on the edge of a warzone and
unauthorized cargo transports could not go unnoticed.
Internal sensors were not blind either and identified the
start and end points of those transports. The cargo was
beamed to USS Chimera and one crate a while later to the
office of Major General Sharpe. The later transport was
fortunately not successful, cause all VIP quarters
(including all Task Force staff) were protected by transport
inhibitors. The transporter beam was relayed into a secure
isolation cargo bay, where the crate was inspected,
identified and transported back to its original location in
secure cargo bay one. The small note: 'A little gift from
the Chimera - Cortez' gave the first hint leading to the
charged officers.

The rest of the investigation was simple and smooth. Using
his privileges, Mumacik inquired a log copy from USS
Chimera's transporter logs. From there it was easy to
identify who and what was beamed from UNITY around the time
the theft was conducted. None of the three officers were on
board the UNITY so Mumacik could not go and arrest them, but
he immediately prepared the charges and send them out to
proper places. Captain Cropa Rojac or Captain Trent Rodgers
or the JAG department will sooner or later chime at the
charged officer's door.

With Admiral Guzman's absence, Captain Rodgers was very busy
with TF and UNITY matters and he had little time to take
care about less important security business. That most
probably the reason why a dozen of requests still remained
unanswered, including complaints from General Sharpe.

[USS Chimera] [Unity] SD240908.09 | Duty Log | 2LT R. Winters | PL-E

For four years we had trained day-in and day-out for a moment like this; however, as I stood there watching the men of First Platoon gather their gear and organize their supply packs, I couldn't help but feel a tingle of anxiety in the pit of my gut. Many of these men had been together for years, fighting countless skirmishes against enemies just as numerable, and here I was with "zero" in my record next to my recorded combat time. Yet they seemed to trust me, at least as much as they could have at that point. I could only hope that trust wasn't misplaced...

"They look ready to you, Sergeant?"

"The boys'll do what they need to, sir," replied the surly man standing beside Lieutenant Winters as the soldiers of First Platoon gathered the equipment from the many racks in the room. Gunnery Sergeant Randleman was of equal height to Winters, if not a couple inches taller, but stood a great deal broader at the shoulders. This man was a workhorse, no doubt about it. "They got their jobs down. They know what needs to be done."

Dick looked over to Randleman and nodded, "I've seen the reports. This unit's got a long, proud history of doing what needs to be done."

"That it does, sir."

Turning back to his own open weapons locker, Winters pulled his Type-II phaser sidarm, snuggled in it's holster, from it's storage unit and placed it in the travel pack. Checking to make sure he had several clip-like energy cells already stored, he moved on to pull out the compression rifle. After checking the targeting sights, the power cell, and the phase actuator, the Lieutenant packed it away. Also stored in the duffel were a pair each of both the photonic-frag and flash grenades, enough dry rations to last a week, and a handful of heatable rations.

Hanging inside the storage locker was his battle-dress uniform, the solid black uniform used by the Starfleet Marines during combat situations, just as clean and pressed as the duty uniform he was currently wearing. Dick ran a hand along down the BDU's sleeve, wondering just how messed up it was going to get in the coming days. This would be his first time in true combat; of course he had been in many mock-up battle situations, but never in life-fire exercise against other living beings. And while at Quantico they worse a uniform similar to combat uniforms from the Dominion War era: solid black uniforms with a green stripe encircling the upper abdomen.

"You'll do fine, sir. Just trust your insticts."

The Lieutenant once again looked over at the Gunny Sergeant and offered a half-cocked smile, "You've done this before. Coaching a green officer going into combat."

"More times than I care to remember, Lieutenant." It was very likely that Randleman had seen a good deal of action during his years of service, though Winters had yet to find out much about him or his past.

"How many Platoon Leaders has Easy gone through?"

The man sighed as he tired to recall, memories playing out across his weathered face, "The company? Probably half a dozen in the last couple years, I'd reckon."

"Though Battalion Command has full confidence in it's most current acquisition," said a new voice from the direction of the room's exit. Dick looked over and smiled at his Andorian friend.

"What brings you down here, Nix?" asked the Lieutenant as th'Laxonth joined him and Randleman beside the storage lockers.

Nix grinned as he replied, "You're looking at second battalion's newest Intelligence Officer. I'll be the liaison Fleet Intelligence and the companies."

"That mean you're brinin us some good news?" asked the Gunny, a bushy eyebrow raised.

Dick cleared his throat before holding up both hands, "I'm sorry. Lieutenant th'Laxonth, this is my platoon sergeant, Gunny Randleman. Gunny, Lieutenant th'Laxonth."

"Pleasure," said the large man in his southern drawl, turning back to his own locker to finish packing his gear.

"So, what's the news?" Winters asked, finished with the pleasantries of conversation.

The Andorian's antennae twitched as he replied in frustration, "Nothing of any consequence. Just updates on the Klingon garrison we're going to support. Nothing from the Romulans yet, though we're fairly certain they're going to make an effort to retake the station very soon. We'll be moving out in less than a day now. How's your group looking?"

Turning back to observe his marines quietly going about their preparations, the Lieutenant offered a slow nod in reply to the inquiry. "I think we're ready, Nix. I think we'll do just fine..."

Location: Deck 312 - Section One-Twelve (Easy Company Briefing)
Time: Half an hour following his report to Captain Spiers

The chamber was large, easily large to seat nearly a couple hundred men if necessary; this afternoon, however, only about forty individuals were present. The room was arranged with stadium-style seating to allow better vantages during briefings, and the units attending the current briefing were standing at attention near the front, in the bottom tiers. They were obviously waiting for direction from somewhere.

"Seats," came the command, originating from Second Lieutenant Winters as he walked down the center aisle in the room. As he made his way to the front of the chamber the soldiers around him all silently sat down, sitting stock still as they did so. Winters set a pair of PADDs down on the only surface in the room, which doubled as a holographic display for briefings, and turned to address the troops. Gunnery Sergeant Denver Randleman, a large man with a bit of a southern accent, stood just behind and to the side of him.

As soon as the Lieutenant had found and met Gunny Randleman, the briefing packet had arrived for him from Captain Spiers. He had then immediately begun studying the material while Randleman and rounded up and assembled the troops of First Platoon. More time would have been preferable, and much appreciated, but the lack thereof was understood.

"I am Lieutenant Winters," he started, looking through the ranks. There were many species represented in the group: Vulcans, Bolian, Tellarite. The platoon had been made into a very diverse group. As his gaze neared the far end of the group, he continued, "And I will be taking over as your Platoon Leader, effective immediately." Dick saw several nods throughout the crowd; had they been without an officer for that long?

"I wish we had more time to get acquainted," he said, reaching back to grab a PADD while still looking at the group. "But General Sharpe has seen to it to assign Second Battalion to Operation Manga. Over the next twenty four hours you will be receiving extensive briefings over this material; however, we're going to go over the role Easy Company is going to play in this operation."

With a tap to the PADD the lights in the chamber dimmed and the holo-projector hummed to life, pulling up a glowing blue representation of the Romulan-esq space station to hover a meter off the table's surface, "This is Passada station, which was recently taken in action from the Romulans by Klingon and Erassian forces. This station, people, is our destination."

Another tap zoomed in on the hologram (now nearly ten meters across), with several dozen internal sections of the installations now glowing a pulsing red. "These are our objectives. We will occupy and defend these locations from any counter attack the Romulans may make against the station while our armada continues on to complete Operation Manga."

"We will be taking along all standard equipment," he continued, closing down the holo-projector. "That means Type-Three compression rifles, p-frags, and flash grenades." Dick turned to look at a group of three men he had already been told about, "Support, I want you equip with a Type-Four Es-Ay-Pee rifle."

The Lieutenant turned his attention back to the group in whole, "Make sure to pack plenty of ammunition cells, rations, and water! We're not sure how long this is going to take so I want you all to be prepared! We depart this station in less than forty-eight hours. Are there any questions?"

The soldiers looked amongst themselves for several moments, but no one spoke up. With a firm nod Dick turned to Randleman, "Alright, Sergeant. Get'em to it..."

Time: Immediately following previous log.

"Enter," came the call from within the office.

The doors parted and Lieutenant Dick Winters stepped into the workspace and moved into the position of attention, though a much looser version that the one he had offered General Sharpe half an hour earlier, "Lieutenant Richard Winters, reporting, sir."

His voice was met with silence; sparing a glance down towards the desk he found Captain Spiers, a Betazoid man not much older than Dick himself, was busy working on his console. The desktop was sparse, as was the office in general. It was very office the Captain spent little time here.

"Stand at east, Lieutenant," came a calm reply at last, as the Captain finished up whatever it was he had been doing and finally looked up locking gazes with Lieutenant. Dick immediately relaxed his stance and rested his arms behind his back. "I just got your assignment from battalion HQ, Lieutenant. Happy to have you with us."

Winters gave a quick nod in response, "Thank you, sir. Happy to be here."

The Captain glanced back down at his console for a moment before clearing his throat, "Alright, Lieutenant, I'm assigning you to First Platoon. You'll need to see Gunny Randleman, goes by Bull with the men. He'll see to introductions with your squads. You can find them in Sections One-Seventeen through One-Thirty on this deck."

Again the Lieuteant nodded, "Yes, sir."

"And make this quick, Lieutenant," Spiers said, walking around the end of his desk to stand next to Winters. "Second Batallion deploys in two days. We're gonna hold down Passada while the fleet takes care of some business further in.  I need Easy to be ready."

"Understood, sir."

The Captain held out his hand for the young man, "I'm sorry you don't have more time to get situated, but I need you to get it done, Winters. Hoo-rah?"

"Hoo-rah, Captain," Dick replied, accepting his commander's hand in a firm shake.

"Dismissed, Lieutenant."

Winters threw up a salute before he turned on his heel and marched out of the room. Section 117 was a bit of a walk from his present location, and he had no time to spare.

So much for seeing his billet.
