T'Vel lifted the medical tricorder up to scan Scott's cranial area, looking carefully at the readings as she moved the device slowly upwards.
"Are you still experiencing any headaches?" she asked as she continued.
"Some." he replied "... but nothing as bad as they were. I've not needed medication for a few days..well..a couple of days. "
T'Vel nodded as she continued the scan, proceeding down his neck to his spine. "Your vertebrae have healed well," she commented. "How is your motor coordination?"
" It's ..better." he said, though not sounding too convinced. " It takes me a while to evaluate some situations though...like the lifts for example...the doors open,
people go in and some come out and I need to decide who is going where" He frowned as he made the answer but T'vel made no comment on it.
"Please lie down and touch your right knee and right toe with the heel of your left foot," she instructed.
He settled back on the biobed, readied himself and did exactly as she asked.
T'Vel observed him and made mental notes. "Now please draw a figure eight in the air with both arms," she continued, not giving any of her observations.
"Both arms?" he asked giving her a quick glance at which she nodded. Once again he settled for a moment or two before lifting his arms. After a moments hesitation he drew the figures in the air then dropped his arms back at his sides and glanced at her again.
The Vulcan doctor now held out her hand towards Scott and pointed her index finger. "Follow the movement with your eyes," she instructed, quickly moving her finger about in front of him.
He watched the finger move past his face left, right and left before he lost sight of it.
"For the last test, please stand and balance on first the left leg, and then the right," she indicated.
Scott sat up,eased himself off the bed, steadied himself and raised his left foot, holding it off the floor for a few seconds before lowering it. T'Vel merely stood watching his feet when he looked at her so he began the second part of the exercise. This time the foot wasnt held quite as steadily and he lowered it more quickly.
"Well?.." he asked hopefully.
"Judging from your physical examination you are fit for light duty," T'Vel replied as she made a note on the padd she held. "However, I will schedule a short knowledge exam for you to test your competence and an appointment with the Starbase Counselor. If you pass the exam and the psychiatric evaluation, you may return to duty for 4 hours per day."
Scott nodded, knowing that the other tests were essential but feeling pleased that T'Vel had given him the 'all clear' even if only for short shifts.
A young nurse popped her head into the exam room. "Excuse me for interrupting, Dr T'Vel, but your son is here and insisting to see you," she said in an apologetic tone.
"Please tell him that I am busy with a patient and will see him shortly," T'Vel said curtly, but just as she finished her sentence, the tall figure of a young Vulcan male appeared behind the nurse.
"Mother," he greeted her with a quick nod. His hair was somewhat unkempt and his demeanor not quite as stiff as a typical Vulcan's.
"Savek," T'Vel replied in a stern voice. "I am busy with a patient. Please wait until I am done, then I will speak with you."
Savek paused a moment then nodded, standing clear of the door and allowing the nurse to leave. The door closed again and T'Vel turned her attention back to Scott.
"I apologise for the interruption," she said.
Scott had been surprised by the interruption but more so by the fact that T'Vel had called the young man 'son'.
"Its ok.." he said. "...errr...but I didn't know you had a son."
"I have two children," T'Vel volunteered as she placed the padd down on a tray. She often didn't share personal information without being asked, but the last few months she had found herself often talking about her family to people she knew well. Vulcans were known to be secretive, but T'Vel had known Scott for a long time and considered him a friend; she didn't think it inappropriate to tell him "Savek is the eldest and my daughter, Paleris, is the youngest. They've lived on the starbase a long time."
Scott considered the information wondering how he could have known someone for so long yet hardly know them at all.
"My mate was Commander Sokas. He was the former Chief Medical Officer of Unity, killed during the battle," she said calmly.
"Ah...I'm sorry. " Scott said watching her making notes on the medpadd. "Look..T'Vel...I had no idea you had family here and I 'am' sorry. It must be..difficult."
"Thank you, Scott. I... appreciate your concern," she said, using his name for the first time in a long while. "It is challenging at times." Turning her attention back to the situation at hand, she said, "The test is complete, you are free to go."
"Ok..well..thankyou." It was obvious that the conversation was at an end so crossed the short distance to the door, opened it and went out. Savek was standing nearby.
"Hi" Scott said as he went passed.
