[USS Chimera] SD: 240811.22 Joint Log LtCol PontBrillant & 2ndLt. Nyx

=/\= SB 234 =/\=

Mnemosyme sat at a quiet table and waited for the next person she had to give an eval to and clear for duty.  She drummed her finger on the table as she waited; preferring the informal setting to a stuffy office.  She watched the steady gait of the man walking up to where she was sitting.

Vlimar was surprised that he was called for a second exam, since he rejoined. Vlimar was used to "at war" status, him that fought in the Insurrection War as a Commanding Officer. He shrugged, thinking that if that's what he must do, it's what he's going to do. Vlimar entered the lounge, looking around for 2nd Lt Nyx. He immediately spotted her, as she was one of two wearing the Marine Officer uniform and the other one was a Major.

"Lieutenant Nyx, I presume?", Vlimar asked.

"Yes, I'm 2nd Lieutenant Nyx.  Please, have a seat, Colonel and my first name is  Mnemosyme."  She had stood to address him but motioned toward a chair and sat back down.

Vlimar smiled and sat down slowly. As the  waiter was passing by, he waves at him. "Can you bring me a Café au Lait?", he asked. His eyes then went from the waiter to Mnemosyme.

She waited while the colonel put in the quick order and when the waiter looked to her, she merely gave a small shake of her  head.   As the waiter went to retrieve the order, she continued, "But as my first name is as long as my rank perhaps you'd prefer to use my nick name, Nym or just my last name Nyx."

Vlimar smiled to remark. He agreed that Second Lieutenant Mnemosyme Nyx was a barrier to get on the shortlist, as Vlimar called it, of officer you want to call. It's always easier to call Jake than Christopher-Alexandre... Vlimar nodded.

"Then, Nyx it is... and you can call me Pont...", he replied.

The waiter place the colonel's drink on the table in front of him.   Nym asked, "There are a lot of things to do here, are you very busy?"  She thought these after battle evals were annoying when there was clearly much more important things to do.

Vlimar smiled to the question. In a way, a senior officer in a ship is always busy and can be free when they feel it is necessary. That was one of those cases. Vlimar looked at Nyx.

"Well, I give you all the time you need, Nyx.", he said. "This has to be done and I don't think I would be able to get away from it...", he added, laughing. Obviously, Vlimar decided to make the best of the meeting, whatever apprehensions he might have.

"Sir, with as much double talk as you just gave me, I'm sure you could have found a plausible reason to stall an evaluation."  Nym smiled back politely.  "But , getting back to business, Do you like your job?"

Vlimar couldn't but think {clever}. He smiled kindly and replied.

"I love my job. To be honest, I wanted to come back in Starfleet after a too long retirement.", he said. "When you've been doing the same thing for 20 years, want it or not, you start to love your job.", he added, simply.
Vlimar smiled as he concluded that initial answer, then sipped his Café au lait.

Mnemosyme made a noncommittal sound and asked, "How do you feel about your follow officers?"

Vlimar smiles, as he was taking another sip of his café. He put his cup down and looked at Nyx.

"Well, as a Starfleet Officer myself, I think it is important to respect the others and understand some have weaknesses and strengths... Some have more flaws than others, but, overall, I enjoy dealing with each and everyone of them.", Vlimar said, obvious referring to Jluaz for the "more flaws than others" part.

She mentally made a check mark and asked the next blank question.  "How do you feel about Starfleet?"

Vlimar then smiled. It was obvious rigid questions, taken from the counselor's course books and instructions. Vlimar liked originality and out of context situation. He though that the best way to really know someone is to go beyond the battered paths and surprise people.

"I love Starfleet, but I hate it's evolution, sometimes. Too much politics, I guess.", he instinctively replied.
Vlimar then stopped and looked at Nyx.. "Nyx, you know, you can talk to me directly, not through your academic books...", he replied,  waiting for an answer.

"But, I've already surmised that you are an excellent strategist that thrills at his job, but takes what he can get ... working with the raw material so to speak."  She took a moment to stare at him perhaps in the hopes it would make him feel as though she were stealing the information right from his head.  "I further find you fit for duty at this time.... just didn't want to disappoint ... or be found lacking in my job, Sir."  She continued to watch him from her relaxed position.  {At least he was as truly bored by those questions as I was.}

Vlimar smiled to the compliment. He showed a half surprised face, because he was not fully surprised. He expected Nyx to be able to describe him in words, words that Vlimar felt were his to lose...

"I realize you did your duty, and well, if I may say...", he added.  Vlimar then took the last sip of his café, then looked at Nyx again.  "Tell me about you, Nyx... Why Starfleet?", he dared asking.

"Why not," she replied with typical marine attitude.

Vlimar grinned to the answer. {Marines are Marines}, he told himself.  Even though Vlimar was wearing the Marines' uniform, he was hardly a Marine. When the Starfleet Secret Services were disbanded to let place
to the SSF, all SSS Officers were kept in the system, but were ordered  to wear the Marines uniform, so they wouldn't have to change their rank appellation. It was mostly a question of continuity.

"Then, tell me about you, Nyx...", he replied, expecting a cold Marine-type answer.

"I'm afraid there's not much to tell.... I'm a marine with half a brain.... I profile... that's all," she answered succinctly.  "I wouldn't want to waste any more of you time, Sir, Thank you."

Vlimar saw that anxiousness to leave. He slowly adopted a more relaxed position, almost feeling the roles were inversed.

"Oh, you are not wasting any time, Nyx. I know that you had 1 hour reserved for this interview and it's been... oh... 27 minutes...",he added, looking at his watch. "So, I have 33 minutes left to know you better...", he concluded.  "Where are you from, Nyx?"

"An outpost is where I was born," She replied.  "How many siblings do you have," she questioned back.  Banter was easier when both parties had to bee involved and less revealing which suited her fine.

Vlimar smiled to the answer. The PontBrillant family was unique in it's genre. Vlimar had no siblings what so ever, such his father had no siblings, as his father, etc.

"None, what so ever...", he replied, immediately. "I am the only child.", he said... "Am I sharing this infortune?", he asked.

"I don't find it unfortunate.  And you were born?"  Nym sat comfortably and watched the time tic away.  {33 minutes.... 31 minutes.... 30 minutes to go.}

Vlimar obviously saw that Nyx did not want to be there. He smiled, as he did not wish to hold her against her will, sort of a respectfully confinement.

"Well, I think I will get back to my duties. You owe me 28 minutes", Vlimar replied, as he stood up and offered his hand to Nyx to shake.

"I'll take them in PT," she responded and stood.
