Ryunosuke interlaced his fingers in front of his mouth and
answered whilst deep in thought. "If it was merely a case of
sabotaging relations between the Federation and the Alliance
they would have put poisoned sheets in every room but
Ambassador Ayanami's.  A lousy frame but it likely would
have been accepted as fact.  No I think there are other
factors involved, perhaps the success of recent missions
against the Romulans.  Removing some of the top strategic
planners on both the front lines of the war would result in
a quagmire.  Who would benefit from both sides of this war
wearing themselves into annihilation?"

"Some third party" Shane replied the obvious. "Or someone
behind the scenes on both sides" he added. "Speaking about a
third party, who the hell, would be capable of such an
action? After all, it's not kid's game to bring someone this
near to the Ambassador and myself. I do not think that any
major powers in this quadrant would do so ... Klingons or
Cardassians. There are of course a number of minor powers
with high ambitions, but if we could track the attack down
to any of them, they would face SERIOUS troubles. That leads
us back to someone behind the scenes, what do you think
about it?"

"It's hard to give a definite answer without more
information.  The Klingons with their fledgling intelligence networks likely
dont have the pull or the expertise for such a high level action and
as for the Cardassians, the Federation never did stamp out the Obsidian
Order to the degree it wanted and they definitely have the ability.
Despite a build up in ships though, they seem to be playing ball as
I'm sure your father would agree.  Those ideas are based on old
thinking though, powers and principalities are no longer the be all
and end all.  The problem is with a group behind the scenes that
could be anyone, if they are long established, wide reaching and have
high level connections...  If they did have a public face it
wouldn't be ultra high visibility but well known enough to be ignored
and easy to overlook.  Possibly a religious or charitable organization?"
Ryunosuke mused.

Shane nodded: "Possible enough. But achieving such a victory
like gaining access to our fleet level area and nearly
killing the Ambassador and me, needs military support. But I
don't like where this conversation is leading. *IF* we are
talking about betrayal (at Krondor) in Starfleet or Erassian
military, then I see black for everyone involved"

Ryunosuke nodded. "Depressingly not trusting anyone is probably the best course of action.  It may not be the most conducive course for long term happiness but its the best way to stay alive.  Although its a risk what counter intelligence assets do you have to hand."

Sighing, Shane added: "You know most probably best yourself.
SFI had no unit on UNITY, SSFI is busy elsewhere and what we
have ..." Shane paused, "is not usable for counter
intelligence. I bet I have to speak with the Ambassador
about some intel backup"

"I'm sure she'll do her best to facilitate the request Admiral.  One last thing before I go.  Officially blame the assassination attempts on Romulan spies.  The easiest way to find the enemy is when they're not aware you are looking for them.  Do be careful who you mention this conversation to.  We do not know who the enemy is and there is a chance they do not know who they are either." He said getting up and moving towards the door.  Just before he exited he said just loudly enough for the Admiral to hear him. "After all it wouldn't be the first time you've had a sleeper agent amongst your crew..."

Rojac stared at the hypnotic, swirling mass of color that was the Romulan dimensional gate. If Rojac did not comprehend the danger the beautiful display represented, he would probably have liked it - instead the sight instilled in his gut a sense of dread and vengeance. He wanted to cut the display short.

The Captain turned to the young Ops Lieutenant to his right. "Jones," he said urgently, "get the detonator from Cortez, quickly."

"Aye Sir." Jones said as he stood up and made his way past chairs and consoles to make it to the back once back there he  looked around looking for Cortez to get the detonator for the Captain. After locating Cortez he headed over to him and also where the doctor was.

"Kroitzer, hop on the sensors and give me whatever you can as soon as you can on whatever is coming out of that gate."

Gustav said "Aye sir" as he left his chair to take up the co-pilots seat and he quickly set about getting all the sensor data he could.

[Serpent - Aft]

Cortez writhed around suddenly waking up to see Fisher the ships CMO standing over him. To his side was another man whose face he couldn't remember.

"Excuse me doc." Jones said he then looked at Cortez, "Sir the Captain needs the detonator where is it?" Jones asked not really wanting to use up more time and allow more of what ever was going to come through the gate.

Scott, was too engrossed in dealing with the massive wound to take much notice of someone standing beside him and it wasnt until he turned to reach for more medication that he found his way blocked. "Out of the way." he said shortly.

Not completely understanding the question or what this man wanted and unable to speak, Cortez pointed to his gear which had been taken off by the medic.  It was laying on the ground a few feet from the bed he was laying down on.

Jones opened the case that Cortez pointed to once it was open Jones moved some stuff around and then shut it again, "it's not in here." Jones said standing up and looking at Cortez with a shock look on his face. He then heard the doc say something which made Jones look and he realized that he was in his way. The Major suddenly felt a warm fuzzy feeling moving up his arm from where the doctor had injected something and into the rest of his body. He realized he was suddenly becoming very drowsy again.

"Detonator?" How should I know?!...will you get out of the way? I need to get in there." Scott pointed to the open medkit.

Jones finally realized what the doc wanted, "Sorry." Jones said stepping back to allow the doc to get in there, "Is there any other cases that the detonator may be in?" Jones said looking around the back compartment hoping that it wasn't on the station. 'Detonator' Cortez thought, 'its on the damn station' he wanted to yell, but all that came out was a few small gasps and grunts.  A few seconds later he was passed out again.

Scott grabbed hold of Cortez arm and looked at the open fingers. "There is no detonator..ok?...now get out of the way!" he said glaring up at Jones

Dare looked down at the bleeding Cortez and tried not to smirk.  Seeing him injured so much gave her a certain sense of satisfaction.  Her team could have done it without ending up like that.  She wasn't entirely ungrateful however, the distraction he'd caused had allowed her team to get their task completed quicker and without as much romulan resistance.  Pity, she'd be looking forward to a good killing spree.  A small sigh then she spoke up.  "Captain Rojac, the data we retrieved is being prepared and entered onto a PADD for you."

[Cockpit]

Gustav looked at the screen in front of him in disbelief  "Sir I think you need to see this" he said pointing to the screen a ship appearing from the gate "It's registering as… large sir, very large… about four miles long and huge".

"Four miles?" Rojac said in disbelief. He pulled up his own navigational sensors. "Holy hell." He muttered. "Xerxes' Lancers are moving in, put us in on their comm system." Rojac said, as he took a course away from the station.

The Chief Engineer activated the comms but the result was a poor connection at best.

Static blared through the audio systems in the cockpit.

+Anti-Ship Missiles to take out the engines first then start dropping the full size torps.  Have Windhover Squadron provide medium range intercept support for Chimera as we only have the primary phaser arrays online.  Keep them busy till we can get in
weapons range.+ It was Walters' voice that was heard on the line.

Rojac listened intently as the fighters confirmed their orders, just as Jones returned from the aft of the shuttle.

Walking back up front after searching through numerous cases, "sir no detonator I believe it's still on the station." Jones said knowing that's not the best of news that the CO wanted to hear.

The Romulan Cruiser was blasted apart by several extremely high intensity energy beams from the gargantuan ship moving through the gate

+Unknown vessel, this is Major Xerxes of the USS Chimera-C.  Identify yourself immediately.+

Rojac barely hear it, he was focused on Jones' revelation. "What?" He grit his teeth. His ace in the hole had met a royal flush. "No detonator."

Jones looked as if he were about to speak when the transmission from the unknown ship came in.

+Aunty Anya?+

Rojac's eyes widened, and he swiveled back around in is chair to face his sensors.

[Bridge - Deck One - USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]

"Lay in a course for the gate, best speed.  Any and all power we have
from  non-essential systems including the SRA reroute to weapons and
shields." Walters ordered.

"Aye aye!" Dior complied. The half-betazoid helm officer ran her
slender fingers across the pitch controls and took the ship hard to
port on an exit course from the small asteroid field. She felt the
engines shudder slightly as she increased the throttle and fired the
port RCS thrusters to keep the vessel from drifting due to the
inactivity of the port impulse drive. "Best speed, point-seven-one c."
She reported, and then held her breath. The asteroid field was their
only protection from the thalaron weapons, but it seemed the XO was
willing to take fate head-on.

"Yes sir." Ian said the first thing he did was starter rerouting all
power that was going to the SRA and moving it to the shields. He then
sent a message down to the ODCC to start shutting down non-essential
systems and transferring the power to the weapons. While he did the
same from the bridge and transferring the power to the shields and
then giving some to helm so it would be easier to maneuver the ship.

Mike spared a quick, grateful nod in the Operations Officer's
direction before he started tapping his own commands into the main
tactical console. What little he had left in the way of weapons, he
quickly locked onto as many targets as he could, focusing on their
weapons systems to try and guarantee the chance of a second shot. All
he could think of at that moment was Tennyson's 'Charge of the Light
Brigade,' and was hoping that the Chimera would not have the same fate
as those brave six-hundred. "Targets acquired, Major. Ready for your
order and weapons range."

Walters opened the channel to the fighter wing "Major Xerxes I need
your Lancers to race ahead dump every bit of heavy ordinance they have
onto the remaining Thelaron Cruiser before their reinforcements
arrive.  Use your Anti-Ship Missiles to take out the engines first
then start dropping the full size torps.  Have Windhover Squadron
provide medium range intercept support for Chimera as we only have the
primary phaser arrays online.  Keep them busy till we can get in
weapons range."  Walters turned to the Science console "Leftenant
Carpenter whats the gate disgorging this time?  I need numbers and
details yesterday."

Lieutenant Carpenter called "One unknown ship, whatever it is its big."

The captain of the Gien'rva gave a satisfied chuckle and grinned.  His
more ambitious fellow Sub-Commanders had paid the price for their
arrogance with their lives and now he was about to finish the match.
There hadn't been a scheduled duty relief planned so it was likely one
of the evacuation convoys and those were usually escorted by one or
two of the big War Cruisers which he could pull rank on as site
commander.  The grin faded as the viewscreen changed to show the tip
of the ship emerging through the gate "Evasive..."

On the expansive bridge of the EAS Samson, Nikolai gave the order
"Forward Batteries, Fire" and at once the forward Heavy Fixed Arclight
Batteries opened up on the Romulan Thelaron Cruiser.  Had the Romulan
Ship been facing an comparable Erassian ship like a 6th Generation
Destroyer it would have had time to put up at least some sort of fight
but the Samson was Tyrant Class.  The biggest, meanest, deadliest and
most advanced ship the Erassian Alliance had ever (and now would ever)
produced.  The Arclight beams burned through the Romulan Shields and
then through the ship itself.  After the beams cut off only a few
small lifeless fragments of the Thelaron Cruiser remained to float
through space.

From her forward vantage point Anya watched as the massive ship that
had destroyed the Thelaron Cruiser with so little effort exited the
gate.  Sensors were giving next to no information about the ship, all
it could do was make estimated guesses at the size and shape of the
ship.  The ship was jet black and when Anya looked closely it looked
almost as if the the darker areas within the black moved...organic
hull tech?  The shape of the ship though was familiar, it looked a
little like the 5th Generation Cruiser EAS Oceanus that had taken up
control of the Canna System after the capture of the Breen base on
Chimera's last mission, but it was a lot bigger.  Sensors estimated
about four miles long.  Anya brought up the first contact scripting
used by the Federation.  'On behalf of the United Federations of
Planets I welcome you'...scrapped.  "Unknown vessel, this is Major
Xerxes of the USS Chimera-C.  Identify yourself immediately."

Anya had heard nearly every response to that demand imaginable but she
wasn't prepared for the one she recieved.  There was an audio reply
over a comm line filled with static "Aunty Anya?"

Anya looked to her immediate right where her wingmate Cerwynn was flying.  She could see into the cockpit as Cerwynn looked towards her shaking her head and miming an 'I don't know' gesture.  "Unknown vessel, you want to clarify that last statement?"

The response was less surprised in tone this time and more measured.  "I think perhaps that may be something more suited to being discussed in person.  Say Chimera in 3 minutes?  Oh and in response to your question, this ship is the EAS Samson and I am her Commanding Officer, Colonel Nikolai Ivanov. Samson out."

[USS Chimera] SD 240910.17 | Duty Log | MGen. Richard Sharpe

=/\= Anaxis – D-Day - H-Hour + 9 =/\=

Lieutenant Buck Compton was walking beside the LDV that had been assigned to their company, his rifle in his hands, ready for anything. It was nervous as they walked down the narrow streets of Anaxis, fearing that behind every corner, every window, every trash receptacle, there could be a sniper, or some other aggressive force.

So far, they had met some slight resistance down the MSR when the tanks had rolled through, mostly at the prefecture. However, once they had been cleared away, it had been down to the infantry to secure each street, one block at a time. Everyone knew that General Sharpe hadn’t wanted to do it this way, but had been forced to when the AWAC’s had come back to inform command that there was some highly magnetized field over the colony, preventing both transporters and even the most basic of sensor readings.

This had put everyone on their guard, as such a shield was only used to hide the true details of the city. It was either hiding the fact that there were no troops on Anaxis or that there was a whole army group hidden in a school building. Either way, it meant a visual search of the city, to establish the status of the colony one way or another.

So far, they’d faced a few fanatical residents who had come out brandishing things from saucepans to disruptor rifles. In almost all cases, they’d simply shot them on stun, and taken them back into their residence to sleep it off. General Sharpe had issued orders to the effect that no civilian, combatant or otherwise, was to be killed unless absolutely necessary. Everyone agreed with this, as they hadn’t joined up to shoot angry Romulan women shaking bread knives at them, and were happy to obey this order.

The most terrifying moment for Buck Compton had been the Romulan boy waving an armed plasma grenade at them, telling them to go away. It was down mostly to the 1st Sergeant’s heroism, in that 1st Sergeant Lipton had walked straight up to the boy, slapped him across the face with the back of his hand, and taken the grenade from him. He’d then passed the grenade to one of the explosive experts of the company, grabbed the boy by one of his pointed ears, and dragged him off to the house they’d seen him come out of, and leave him with his rather angry looking parents.

Lieutenant Heyliger, the acting company CO, had been so impressed, he promised to make sure that Lipton got the silver star for that. Lipton had merely shrugged and said that it wasn’t bravery, but common sense. Being a father himself, he knew how to handle badly behaved children.

And so they carried on through the city, which had so far been very boring. They creeped along with the LDV, as the man on point walked ahead. It was Lieutenant Blakely, the hotshot new academy kid, who seemed to think that because he’d got a bronze bar on his helmet, he was General Patton himself. He was annoying, in his ways, but seemed to be reasonably good at his job. Buck wasn’t really watching him as he looked at him ahead, waiting for the inevitable hand signal to halt the column for the eighth time that hour to investigate a man-hole or something.

So when there was a sudden ‘whoop’ noise, and Lieutenant Blakely slumped forward suddenly and fell over face first, it took a whole second for everyone to realise what’d happened. “Get down!” Buck shouted, and everyone dived to the side of the road, to get behind the low wall there, as the LDV moved forward, rotating its phaser turret to try and return fire.

Suddenly, the street was alight with green disruptor fire, as the whole building on the left opened fire on the LDV and the men behind the wall. With their backs against the building behind them, the mean of Easy attempted to return fire. Men were flying backwards as they were hit by fire, and the LDV was hit by a plasma rocket from somewhere, causing it to explode and flip over.

Heyliger was trying to help a poor young man who had just had his arm torn off by the flying debris of the LDV, when he was engulfed in bright green flame, and disappeared.

Buck Compton grabbed the radio off of the recently deceased radio man, and shouted into the telephone like device: “This is Easy one! We are under heavy fire at grid reference…” He checked his mini-map. “…two seven four eight three. Requesting immediate fire support at grid reference two seven four eight four. We are in the shit and taking heavy fire!”

=/\= MMCV =/\=

Richard had been bored out of his mind, as he sat on a chair in the control room, leaning back on the chair so that the front two legs were off the floor, as he reclined against the wall. There had been steady reports coming in from the field, mostly of sporadic civilian unrest across the city, but for the most part, the populous had been tame and indifferent to the hundreds of marines trooping through their city.

Suddenly there was a burst broadcast from Lt Compton, and Richard fell off his chair. Suddenly, everything had changed. Other units were reporting contacts in the streets. He stood up and looked at the holo map, which was now popping up red dots where contacts were being reported.

“Have the artillery support the action.” Richard said. “Inform all field units to co-ordinate strikes with the MC-200’s and the mortar teams on the MSR.” He said, in his element. He then opened a channel.

“Colonel Marlok, find some way of getting your tanks into the city. Knock down buildings if you have to, but the enemy is holding up in the dense residential areas and industrial areas. I don’t care what you do, but get in there and support our troopers on the ground.” Richard said.

“Yes sir!” Marlok’s growling voice said over the comm.

“Colonel Westman!” Richard said, and the man came into the MMCV. “I want our reserves to try and reinforce the worst hit companies as quickly as possible. Also arrange with the air arm for medivacs as soon as possible.”

“Yes general!” Westman said, cool and calm.

“Harper!” Richard shouted, and the Sergeant Major appeared almost out of thin air behind him.

“Yes sir?” He asked.

“Form up a three squad unit from Force Recon, take the chosen men and go support Easy Company. They’re the worst hit and the furthest away.” Richard said. “Use a troopship to get you there faster.”

“Yes sir.” Harper nodded.

“Oh and Harper, make sure you bring as many medics as you can.” Richard added gravely. “This is going to get much worse before it gets better.”

Harper nodded grimly, but didn’t say anything. Both men had been through too much to need to say what the other was thinking. Harper also knew that Richard would like to be leading this special rescue op, but had seemed to learn that his place was in the MMCV – not in the fighting.
