Ryunosuke interlaced his fingers in front of his mouth and
answered whilst deep in thought. "If it was merely a case of
sabotaging relations between the Federation and the Alliance
they would have put poisoned sheets in every room but
Ambassador Ayanami's.  A lousy frame but it likely would
have been accepted as fact.  No I think there are other
factors involved, perhaps the success of recent missions
against the Romulans.  Removing some of the top strategic
planners on both the front lines of the war would result in
a quagmire.  Who would benefit from both sides of this war
wearing themselves into annihilation?"

"Some third party" Shane replied the obvious. "Or someone
behind the scenes on both sides" he added. "Speaking about a
third party, who the hell, would be capable of such an
action? After all, it's not kid's game to bring someone this
near to the Ambassador and myself. I do not think that any
major powers in this quadrant would do so ... Klingons or
Cardassians. There are of course a number of minor powers
with high ambitions, but if we could track the attack down
to any of them, they would face SERIOUS troubles. That leads
us back to someone behind the scenes, what do you think
about it?"

"It's hard to give a definite answer without more
information.  The Klingons with their fledgling intelligence networks likely
dont have the pull or the expertise for such a high level action and
as for the Cardassians, the Federation never did stamp out the Obsidian
Order to the degree it wanted and they definitely have the ability.
Despite a build up in ships though, they seem to be playing ball as
I'm sure your father would agree.  Those ideas are based on old
thinking though, powers and principalities are no longer the be all
and end all.  The problem is with a group behind the scenes that
could be anyone, if they are long established, wide reaching and have
high level connections...  If they did have a public face it
wouldn't be ultra high visibility but well known enough to be ignored
and easy to overlook.  Possibly a religious or charitable organization?"
Ryunosuke mused.

Shane nodded: "Possible enough. But achieving such a victory
like gaining access to our fleet level area and nearly
killing the Ambassador and me, needs military support. But I
don't like where this conversation is leading. *IF* we are
talking about betrayal (at Krondor) in Starfleet or Erassian
military, then I see black for everyone involved"

Ryunosuke nodded. "Depressingly not trusting anyone is probably the best course of action.  It may not be the most conducive course for long term happiness but its the best way to stay alive.  Although its a risk what counter intelligence assets do you have to hand."

Sighing, Shane added: "You know most probably best yourself.
SFI had no unit on UNITY, SSFI is busy elsewhere and what we
have ..." Shane paused, "is not usable for counter
intelligence. I bet I have to speak with the Ambassador
about some intel backup"

"I'm sure she'll do her best to facilitate the request Admiral.  One last thing before I go.  Officially blame the assassination attempts on Romulan spies.  The easiest way to find the enemy is when they're not aware you are looking for them.  Do be careful who you mention this conversation to.  We do not know who the enemy is and there is a chance they do not know who they are either." He said getting up and moving towards the door.  Just before he exited he said just loudly enough for the Admiral to hear him. "After all it wouldn't be the first time you've had a sleeper agent amongst your crew..."
