===== Shane's office, SB 234 : UNITY
======
Somewhat irritated, Shane threw the PADD he was just holding
against the wall. Following the physical rules, it hard
landed on the wall, bounced somewhat back and landed on the
floor – with the display broken. The PADD was all
innocent, of course, but the content made Shane quite
unhappy. It was a report from Engineering about his request
to scan the entire star base for components that could be
used to create an organic explosive. Engineering was
diplomatic in the reply, but the point was clear – the
base was too large for a full detail scan and there were too
many possible components to be scanned for. A draft scan of
just one civilian sector on decks 100-110 revealed 79
possible dangerous substances. Scanning the entire station
would require 4 weeks and would result in estimated number
of 10.000 found results. {Damn}
Truth was that Shane was dead in waters with the
investigation of Explosive cargo bay three explosions. Clues
pointed towards Romulan origins of the attack, but he was
unable to find out more. It was now when he missed his Chief
of fleet level security, because it seemed that LT. Mumacik
had a 'sense' for finding new clues and connecting the old
ones. It was funny to think about senses for an emotionless
guy like Mumacik, but it was just as it was.
Adding pain to injury, Shane had to deal with the day-to-day
routine of a fleet commander as well. Now when he was back
on UNITY, he could not expect Captain Rodgers to take care
of all the paper work issues and to dodge all the
'important' calls from Starfleet various departments. At
least, there was LT. Pakosii, his aide, who did a great job
dodging such calls, but not even he could dodge them all. As
the Romulan War gain on intensity, more and more Starfleet
branches took part and more and more reports had to be
filled, answered, added, commented or approved. UNITY became
with final authority the lead point of the entire war, home
base for most of the war employed units and main logistic
point of all operations within the adjacent sectors.
Hundreds and thousands of marines, naval NCO and officers
came a left the base within a week, tenths of Starfleet and
allied ships docked and left and even the civilian traffic
seemed to intensify since the start of the war. Some said
that 'war is god for business' …
Reports from the fronts were in general pleasing. Romulans
were currently in defensive and all three sides –
Federation, Erassian Alliance and Klingon Empire did their
best to win as much advantage as their could. Magna
operation (where most of 1st TF forces were involved in) was
running well the same. Reaching objectives was hard and time
schedule was already in delay, but there were no major
setback happening …. yet. Shane was surprised about the
quality of reports submitted by General Sharpe – he never
thought the General to be a 'deck job friendly' man, but it
was that Shane was wrong, or that the General employed
skilled aides.
There was much of other business that came to Shane's
attention. One of them was Rangi's report about sending the
dead bodies of Samantha Palmer and Nicolas Harker to Andoria
– to the Medical Research Investigation unit facility. She
hoped for more details about the 'came from other dimension'
point of her own investigation. Shane needed to know where
exactly the bodies came from and if it was expected to
encounter more folks from the other dimension … maybe even
more Nicolases Harker.
