Georgia Pegg had been locked in the little room for hours,
during which time she had been questioned..again.. and had
undergone a few 'tests'

She was worried, not so much by the fact that she was being
kept confined, not even by the tests themselves but more by
the fact that if anyone entered the room, they wore
protective clothing, as though she was infectious...a
risk...a danger.

They were very polite, very gentle and explained what they
were going to do which was merely to take blood samples and
perform various scans and make lots of notes.

She had sent a message to her fiance Ed Halliday and had,
eventually, received a message back from him, full of love
and concern and reassurance. He would be with her in a week
he said, perhaps a little longer but certainly within ten
days.

That seemed an age to Georgia who sat on the edge of her bed
reading and rereading his message. She was trying to be
brave but was, if the truth be known, a little bit scared.

Whatever the skin condition was which concerned the doctors
so much was worrying but at least it wasnt painful.
It looked unsightly and wasnt responding to any of the
medication they had tried but on the other hand, it wasnt
getting any worse either but it was still scary to see them
in their white suits and listen to their hushed voices.

She sighed, laying the message padd aside and looking at the
tray of food set on a side table.
She didnt really feel hungry but eating would use up some
time, so she stood up from her place and went to collect it.

Outside the small room, the guard on duty was double
checking orders.
It seemed that the doctors now wanted Miss Pegg in a proper
isolation environment and she was to be moved under escort.

The fact that the orders had arrived but the escort hadn't,
caused the guard to call his superior and sort out the
delay.
It took a little while and one of the doctors, having
glanced through the window, told his companion that the
patient seemed happy enough and was enjoying her lunch.

His companion commented that it was "alright for some!" and
then changing the topic, asked if his friend intended to
watch 'the game' later.
They began to talk of teams and scores and chances and 'luck
not being a factor' and in a twist that Fate is so very good
at, something that could have answered many questions and
something that in fact could have saved countless lives,
went unnoticed because they discussed sports and didnt look
inside the room until the chance had passed.

Georgia sat down with the tray on her lap and lifted the
cover off the dish. There was Chicken soup, with a delicious
aroma and under a second cover, some crusty bread. She
lifted the spoon, feeling hungry after all and filled it with
soup and lifted it to her lips.

It was tastey and Georgia enjoyed it, taking two or three
more spoonfuls before stopping to try the bread.

She swallowed some but it seemed she had taken too large a
bite and it stuck in her throat causing her to cough.
The bread didnt move, Georgia frowned and coughing a bit
harder, set the tray on the bed beside her and put a hand to
her throat.

She felt as though she was choking, which indeed she was
although she had no time to call for help or make a sound
other than a strangled gulp and gasp.

She fell back on the bed and the sound of the spoon falling
to the floor wasnt noticed in the laughter outside that some
comment about a teams captain had generated.

Georgia stared up at the ceiling, her mouth open as she
gasped for air and it seemed to her in those last few
seconds of conciousness that her skin was pierced by the
sharpest of needles that ran along her veins.

Then everything went black and ceased to be.

**

The problem was sorted.
The escort arrived, signed the required padds and took the
brunt of a few sarcastic comments before they moved to the
door and unlocked it.

By that time the Demons that had inhabited her body had
left Georgia lying on her bed and but for the fact that the
game had been so rivetting a point of discussion, the doctor
might have glanced in through the window and he might have
seen the thin black lines on her skin disappearing as though
rubbed away by an invisible hand.

Where did they go?

Well that ofcourse, would be another question and it would
be sometime before the answer was found but had they
followed Georgias line of sigh,t they might have wondered
why her lifeless eyes were centred on the airvent in the
corner of the room.
If only the doctor had glanced in and seen it all, the vents
could have been sealed off and the civilian quarters made
safe.

It could have been the beginning of the end but it wasnt
because Fate is often fickle.

This was just the beginning.
