Finally, the door hissed open and a tall man in a Rear
admiral uniform walked in. Shane beamed a smile at the man
and offered a hand for shake. "Welcome Admiral LaGrand"
"Commodore Guzman" replied LaGrand, "I have to say
that I am NOT impressed by your forces"
This word catches Shane out of guard as he was expecting an
least some sort of a polite reply. It appeared that the
Admiral only now noticed Shane's hand and he shook it
absently. Looking directly in Shane's eyes he went on:
"When Starfleet Command ordered me to come here, I
expected Special forces to offer more a match to the Romulan
forces."
Without giving Shane a chance to say anything, LaGrand
continued: "I've studied all the battle reports for last
2 months as well as your and Colonel PontBrillant reports.
There were at least 15 encounters I would react to
differently and far more effective. I must say that the
casualty ratio of your forces is not impressive by far. I
expected to see better results from Starfleet's best" he
finished hinting at the Special forces motto.
Only now Shane could enter this conversation: "I must
admit that in several cases we suffered severe loses, but we
do our best to keep up with the Romulan forces. Our biggest
problem is that the front line is to wide and we have too
little ships to cover it all"
LaGrand shook his head: "Nonsense. I've seen the
dispatchement schemes of your forces and have to say that
they are very poor. But I am not blaming entirely you
Commodore, as I know that you are not very long in your
office. Its not long ago since you were promoted to flag
officer and you don't have much experience with fleet
command. Special Forces should have sent someone else to
watch over this area. Nonetheless, I am finally here and I
take over all the fronts in this sector."
"Excuse me, Sir" Shane said not wanting to give way so
soon, "order that I've became stated that you shall take
over alpha and beta zones, not the entire front. Were there
any new orders that did not reach me yet?" he tried to
sound polite. It was never a clever idea to mess up with an
Admiral ... not even when you were a commodore.
LaGrand pierces Shane with his stare and said: "No, those
orders are still valid, but as I see the situation here,
it's better I take over the whole front. Your forces will
pass over to my command and remain as backup and resupply
units".
"This isn't necessary, Admiral, is it?" Shane asked.
"I mean that Special Forces aren't specialized in large
scale combat and a lot of our vessels are special purpose
vessels, not heavy combat ones"
LaGrand nodded : "I am aware about that, Guzman and
that's why I don't want to put them on the front line.
Fast and maneuverable ships are ideal for recognizance and
resupplying as well as supporting fast response units."
Looking around himself LaGrand added: "This station is
ideal for fleet command. Upgrades performed here are fine,
but there still needs to be done a lot of improvements on
her defensive facilities. All those murky civilians have to
be removed from the station. I really can't understand why
are they still here. It's war and this is a Starfleet
station. The war here went a wring way for too long ... but
things will change now"
