Gustav was busy going over the transporter program that was designed
to quickly send teams of four over to the cloaked listening post
through the 'holes' in the shields, he was very impressed in
complexity considering how sort a time the ops department had to put
it together, he was also waiting on the main ops officers that wrote
the program one Lt JG Dexter and Ensign Baco.
Both Dexter and Baco arrived at the same time. AS usual, it was Ensign
Baco who addressed the deputy Chief Engineering officer: "Lieutenant,
I take it that you are here cause the transporter program for the
listening post..."
As usual, Dexter stayed behind, allowing others to take the
initiative. He was not a type to stand in the reflectors light –
rather the opposite. Therefore he remained silent,
waiting for the DCEO to answer.
"Yes I am Ensign" he answered the eager Ensign, Gustav then introduced
himself and explained exactly why he was there "I'm Lt JG Gustav
Kroitzer the Chimera's DCEO, I've been sent here by the CEO to help
reprogram the transporter program for two person teams as well as give
an extra hand to finish it" adding "and you two are".
Baco nodded and replied: "I am Ensign Baco and this is Lieutenant
Dexter. We have already started with the modifications. Of course, its
not a problem to reduce four to two, but we wanted to increase the
speed two times... but that's where we experience problems"
Dexter nodded: "Yes, we've reduced the energy consumption and needed
computing capacity, but achieved only 15% speed up from the original"
"I see, is there any chance that you could let me see what you have so
far, all I've been able to look at is the program for the 4 person
teams" Gustav asked, "also could you give me a list of the code you
changed, just to speed things up please" he added.
"No problem, sir" Baco replied. "We have it all here and all properly
commented by Lieutenant Dexter"
After looking over the new data Gustav said, "well boys this is some
pretty impressive work, but not perfect, I see some ways to get the
speed required but they would mean breaking a few safety protocols".
This time Dexter smiled: "I remember some Captain Scott saying safety
protocols are only here to be avoided or broken"
"But none of us two" said Baco, "have the proper clearance to do so"
Gustav smiled at had a little chuckle to him self at being compared to
Capt Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott before saying " well Ensign I do have
clearance… one of the privileges of being DCEO".
"Using your authorization, Sir, means you take the responsibility if
this fails" said Dexter. "But all the praise as well" added Baco
quietly.
Looking at Dexter, Gustav said "I know Lt but if it means the success
of the mission then I'm willing to take that risk" turning to face
Baco he added "and not everyone does this job to be praised Ensign"
noticing the surprise on Baco's face when he realised Kroitzer heard
him.
Dexter nodded and Baco remained silent for a moment, blushing very slightly.
"Computer input current program parameters and bypass safety protocols
4,5 and 8 then give us the estimated transporter speed increase…
authorisation Gustav pi 963" he asked the computer.
[Input parameters set… authorisation accepted… results will be
complete in 5.3 minutes] the computer replied in its robotic female
voice.
====== 5 minutes later ======
[Simulation complete] announced the computer, [speed increase to
original parameters is 43.9%]
Dexter nodded "Almost three times of our value, sir". Baco shook his
head: "but we still lack six percent". Dexter shook his head "We do
not have the time for a dozen of new test. I suggest taking what we
have and just make a single confirmation test"
"I agree with Lt Dexter, it would be nice to have the time to be able
to run all available test but this program is needed asap so the
single test will have to do" Gustav said adding "if that's everything
I'll be heading back to engineering if you need anything else just get
me on the comm."
