=Starbase Unity=
Ambassador Qalvalor felt out of place in his current surroundings. There
were so many different races with so many strange customs. It was quite
different than what he was accustomed to.
Less than two days ago, he became a pioneer of sorts. When he stepped
foot on Unity, he officially became the first Nenon to represent his people
away from their home star system. It was a sign of great change for his
people and he felt proud to be chosen by the new government to show that
his people were worthy of being a part of the galactic scene.
There was still great tension between his people and the Federation. So
much so that, instead of opening an embassy on Earth, they had to settle
for representation on this starbase far from home. That suited Qalvalor just
fine. In time, he would convince everyone his people could be trusted.
With a two-man security escort (he was almost a foot taller than either of
them), he walked down one of Unity's wide corridors. This base was
impressive. The Nenons didn't have such a facility. Only a few small research
stations that could only each hold a couple hundred people.
He walked up to one of the married crew quarters and hit the chime.
Mai had just gotten Rachel off and ready for school and had finished cleaning up the bathroom from her daily morning prego ritual when she heard the door bell chime. She felt so groggy she really was not feeling motivated to make her way to the door, but some how she found the strength.
When the door opened, he saw the human female who he recognized from
his files.
Mai was staring at a very tall individual in fact when she first answered the door, she was looking head on at the person's chest. She brushed her hair out of her face and off the shoulders.
"Commander Rodgers, my name is Ambassador Qalvalor," he spoke in a calm,
assuring voice. "I am the new Nenon representative to the Federation. I wish
to speak to you. May I come in?"
MaiKai was a bit hesitant and was hoping she didn't show it too much. "Yes, of course. Do come in," MaiKai stepped aside to allow the ambassador to step through.
"Do not worry, commander, I mean you no harm. Besides, my escort is likely
keeping an eye on me more for everyone else's sake than for my own."
Mai only nodded. She had no idea what was going on or what she was possibly getting herself into. Ever since Rick's torture, her being pregnant and having to worry about how Rachel is fairing in a new surrounding, had her worrying about all the causes and effects that could lead to somewhere Mai wouldn't want to venture.
Qalvalor looked around, awed as how much different humans were compared
to Nenons in their tastes. Such differences was why he looked forward to
serving as ambassador.
"Is you husband here?" the ambassador asked.
Mai piped up, "I'm sorry, no he isn't. He was called away for assistance." Mai was hoping she sounded confident. She didn't want to give too much about where Rick was since she was talking to a stranger and given late events. MaiKai looked around the room before finding her manners, "You may take a seat if that suits you, Ambassador".
Qalvalor took a seat and nodded.
"That is probably for the best. I'm sure he would not want to see me at this
time. Perhaps later. Anyhow, it is you whom I wish to speak."
MaiKai took in every word. Savoring it before answering, "And to what are you referring to anyway, Ambassador?" Mai wasn't meaning to sound short, but damn it she was tired of beating around the bush always so to speak.
"I wish, on behalf of my government, to apologize to you and your family for
the actions of a few of my people. Especially those actions that took place
against your husband a few months ago. While they were not sanctioned by
my government, Hoack is Nenon and, as such, dishonored our entire race with
his many ... crimes. I regret that these past few months have been most
difficult for you and your family."
MaiKai accidentally bit the inside of her cheek, but tried not to show the pain that she felt. Mai was never told the logistics of what had happened to Rick. This guy had given her more information on the situation than her own husband. Mai was growing a bit frustrated. Mai could only stare the guy in the face silently. She wanted to yell that he had no idea what any of them were going through and that he would never come close to it ... ever.
"I wish to give you this as a sign of friendship and trust," the ambassador
handed a small case to Mai and opened it. Inside was a gem that brilliantly
glowed many different colors. "I know it may not seem like much to you, but it
is the grandest of gifts we can give. A custom that dates back several hundred
years."
Mai held it in her outstretched hand, "It is wonderful, Ambassador. What is it?" MaiKai was really trying to push aside her personal feelings and be a little bit more polite and appreciative though she didn't think she should have to be.
"It is called an Umbura," Qalvalor explained. "It is a rare gem found in only one
place on our homeworld. Very unique. It is of great value and only trusted to a
few. You are the first non-Nenon to receive one. I know it doesn't make up for
all that you have suffered, but I hope that it can represent the future friendship
your people and my people will share."
Mai smiled weakly, "No, you're right. It doesn't make up for anything that has happened, but I do believe with time and great efforts that all parties may set aside their differences".
"Hoack is an enemy of my people and now on the run. While we are unable to
pursue him ourselves, we have hired certain ... individuals who are most
capable. From our last report, Hoack is halfway to the Delta Quadrant by now."
Mai only nodded to refrain from what she actually wanted to do. She wanted to scream even if the Ambassador brought the head of Hoack to her on a platter it still would not be enough to the damage that has been done. She just silently decided to let her gaze fall to the gem and then the floor.
Qalvalor saw a photo of a small child.
"Is that your daughter?" he motioned to the photo.
MaiKai hesitated a little bit again before answering a bit bluntly, "Yes, that's our daughter".
"I have four children myself," the ambassador said. "They are the main reason I
choose to be a diplomat. My hope is to better their future. This will be the
longest I have ever been apart from them. Maybe soon they will be able to join
me here. Being able to mingle and associate with children from so many different
races would be good for them as well as the good of the future of my people."
The ambassador stood.
"I shall take my leave you now, commander. I hope that we may see each other
again and become friends. I also hope to meet your husband and apologize to him
directly. As I said, my people meant you no harm. Overall, we are a good and just
people that have a lot to make up for. Unfortunately, there are a small isolated
group that remain loyal to the old ways."
MaiKai stood as well. "I understand. Thank you for dropping by, Ambassador. I do appreciate what you've done here," Mai smiled weakly.
"Good day, commander," the ambassador leaned forward and nodded.
Qalvalor exited the room, escorted by his security detail.
MaiKai returned to her bedroom. She curled up on her bed and just let the tears flow. There was too much that Rick was keeping from her. She had known for as long as they've been dating that he wasn't telling her everything and this instance just goes to prove it.
