*** Romulan Shuttle * Location unknown ***
The hours passed slowly for Rangi and Martin in their
little prison of a room with no view port to gaze through
and nothing to entertain.
They ate now and then but even the novelty of choosing
'finger foods' began to wear off. They played word games and
number games and sang interactive songs and for the most
part remained in good spirits.
Rangi was certain that they were monitored for it seemed
unlikely that they would be ignored totally although noone
came near to check on them.
After a lengthy singing of 'Old MacDonalds Farm' to which
they introduced many unusual animals to compliment the
traditional ones, Martin was laughing long and loud at
Rangis impersonation of a Ba'ku Llama when the door behind
her slid open.
Martins laughter froze in an instant and Rangi turned
quickly to see two Romulan men standing in the doorway with
a third behind them outside in the corridor.
"You!" the nearest one said, looking at Rangi "...sit."
They were dressed in casual clothes but carried disruptor
pistols and it did not take much intelligence to see that
they were not making a social call.
Martin hurried to her side and she placed a hand on the
little boys shoulders, edging back as the men moved forward.
They looked menacing but Rangis attention was drawn to the
third man who now entered the room too. He carried not a
pistol but a hypospray.
"What do you want?" she asked, fearing what might happen
next.
"I told you to sit." the first Romulan replied. " We're not
here to answer your questions. Do as you're told"
He pushed her shoulder roughly, causing her to stumble and
she put out a hand to save herself as she fell back towards
the bed.
The man with the hypospray said something in Romulan and the
second man reached out and grabbed hold of Martins arm.
"Nooooo!" the little boy shouted, trying to struggle free.
" Leave him alone" Rangi cried beginning to stand.
"Sit when I tell you!" the man roared and struck her across
the face with his hand. It was a stinging blow that caused
her to cry in pain and raise her hand to her face as she
gasped in a breath, shaken by the suddeness of his action.
Martin was fighting like a wild thing, kicking and screaming
resistance, finally twisting round and sinking his teeth
into the mans hand.
"Why you little dog..." The Romulan who had struck Rangi now
turned his attention to the child, hoisting him into the air
by one arm.
"Please! ..please.." Rangi cried but he had already flung
the boy across the small room and Martin hit the wall just
below the replicator, with a sickening thud and fell to the
floor in a heap.
The man spun round pointing the pistol at Rangis head.
"Don't even think of getting up." he growled in a low voice,
then after a second aimed the gun back at Martin "...or he
will not take his next breath."
"Please don't hurt him..please don't." Rangi shook her head,
her eyes filled with tears. She had never felt so helpless
or so frightened.
" M'eak...enough."
The third Romulan spoke with some authority and Rangis
aggressor lowered the pistol, although somewhat grudgingly.
"Please..don't hurt him." Rangi focussed her attention on
the man who had spoken, though her own voice was now
breaking. "...he's just a little boy."
"We are not going to harm you." he replied with a touch of
impatience and turning to look towards Martin added " Go and
pick him up."
Rangi needed no second bidding and scrambled from the bed to
where Martin lay whimpering on the floor. He began to sit up
as she knelt beside him.
" Martin." she whispered seeing the angry bruise already
forming on his forehead from where he had hit the wall. She
gently smoothed back his hair and helped him to stand. He
was pale and shaken but did not cry.
"Bring him here." the man ordered but Rangi was not prepared
to give up her son so easily.
" What are going to do?" she asked " What's in that?" Her
eyes dropped to the hypospray in his hand as she asked the
question.
He sighed, impatience growing. " It is merely a mild
sedative." he said dimissively. " We are taking you off the
shuttle."
Rangi stared at him, unsure whether or not to believe him.
She did not trust any of them and yet, she told herself,
Harker had gone to great lengths to capture them and they
had not, until now, been harmed.
There was no chance of resisting them and as she glanced
quickly at M'eak, she knew that by trying to do so, she
might herself be the cause of their demise..
"Bring him." The Romulan repeated as though he had been able
to read her thoughts.
She slowly got to her feet and bent to pick Martin up.
"It's alright.I'm here." she said, feeling as though she
betrayed his trust but there was no alternative and she
walked slowly back to her place on the bed, passing M'eak
who gave a sly grin as she did so.
She sat down with Martin on her knee and he buried his face
in her shoulder so that he could not see these horrid people
who had hurt him and his mother.
Rangi held him close as the hypospray was pressed against
his neck and a dose of 'who knew what' was administered. In
a moment, it was against her own neck and she felt the cold
sting of the medication.
The Romulans said something she couldnt understand and she
felt Martin grow heavy in her arms and looked down at him.
His fingers had loosened thier grip of her blouse and she
felt her own hands growing weaker so that holding him
suddenly seemed impossible. The room was beginning to spin
very gently and tilt to one side. She tried to move but was
too unsteady and her eyes wouldnt stay open. Martin grew in
and out focus but was somehow gone from her arms.
Then she was floating and someone was speaking from a long
distance away. She saw colours and bright lights then there
was a rushing noise in her ears and after that she knew
nothing more.
