Lieutenant Commander Chloe Utley was going over numerous repair requests
from starships arriving from the front when one of her assistants entered.
"Commander?"
"Yes, Lieutenant?"
"Commander Rodgers is here to see you."
"Oh, great," Chloe muttered.
"Commander?"
"Send him in."
"Yes, sir," the lieutenant walked away.
Soon after, Rick entered.
Chloe and Rick never got along. Several months ago, he had arrived and took
over her department. Chloe knew that it was Commodore Guzman's decision
since Rick had served as his CEO in the past, but she still placed the blame on
losing her position on Rick's shoulders.
Now, here he was, no longer her superior. In fact, she was his boss. Even so,
Chloe knew that she couldn't use that to her advantage. He was highly
decorated and respected from Unity all the way to Earth. So, in a way, she felt
that he still had some power over her.
And she hated that.
Also, there was the "acting" in her title as acting chief engineering officer that
showed how precarious her position really was. Several months ago, she was
chief engineer, no acting to it.
"Commander Utley, Comm ... Commander Rodgers reporting ... for duty," Rick
concentrated as he spoke, making certain he sounded a professional as possible.
"Commander, welcome back," she said, offering her hand.
"Thank you, commander," Rick said, shaking Chloe's hand.
He looked around and noticed PADDS and other items laying everywhere. He had
noticed that the first time he had met her, but passed it off as a result from the
battle that had just taken place. Now he realized that maybe she was not that
organized.
Chloe motioned for Rick to take a seat on the other end of her desk. Rick moved
aside a couple of PADDs in the chair and sat just as she took a seat behind her
desk.
"Commander, I'm going to be honest with you. Considering how things went last
time you arrived here, this is kind of ... awkward for me," Chloe explained.
"I ... understand," Rick slowly said. "I ... am here to ... to do my job. Nothing else."
She nodded.
"Good, because I do need experienced engineers. It seems like the fleet is sending
the best to ship duty while living me with whoever is left. That's why things may
seem a little hectic around here."
Rick wanted to explain that it was the job of a good chief engineer to make due
with inexperienced engineers and make them good. But, he wanted to avoid a
confrontation.
"I do ... I mean, I will do what needed of me," Rick said.
"Excellent. I'll have Lieutenant Farralon work with you to get you up to speed with
everything happening here," she stood. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got other
matters to tend to."
Rick, noticing her urge to get rid of him, nodded as he stood and walked out of her
office. He began his search for Farralon.
