Stephen eyed the newcomer as she entered his office. " Take
a seat." he said in a nonchalant tone, already returning to
the task he had been busy with when the door chime had
sounded. He sprinkled a little more food into the spacious
tank and bent down to look through the glass, checking on
the occupants.

Mnemosyme entered and stood in front of the chair. Her
marine training kept her from sitting until her superior was
seated himself. "Sir," she questioned as he turned and
looked at her.

"I said 'take a seat'" Stephen replied looking her up and
down. "Anywhere you want..sofa, armchair or at the desk if
you prefer formality." he continued, already engaging his
attention back on the feeding frenzy inside the tank.

{Oh, goody, the games are starting early this time.} She
moved to lean on the wall across from him. It appeared to
be a relaxed position and she could easily slide into a seat
on the sofa if she chose to but she preferred to stay
physically and mentally alert.

"See these?" Stephen asked, focusing on a trio of slim
black fish." ..beautiful aren't they?" He ignored his
companion though she was visible in a distorted way through
the tank. " Vicious little things too...when they want to
be."

Mnemosyme made a couple of noncommittal sounds that could be
mistaken for agreement. {Many things can be or seem vicious
when boxed into a small area. "Is there something you
needed me for... Sir?"

Stephen watched the fish who were calmer now the food was
almost gone. "Nothing in particular." he said, then
straightened up, met her gaze and added, "Why do you lean on
walls?"

"Its comfortable . yet keeps you on your toes," she answered
simply.

Stephen's expression was unreadable but he didn't reply,
instead he moved to the armchair set at right angles to
where Nym stood and sat down onto the soft cushions, laying
his hands on the chair arms. "Are you bored?" he asked.

"No.. there is plenty to keep me busy," she answered only
slightly altering the position where she continued to lean
against the wall.

"Namely?" Stephen asked with the very faintest tinge of
amusement on his face.

"Exercising, meditation, breakfast, rounds, updates, lunch,
maybe a game or two of chess, a walk, target practice,
dinner, light reading, a shower here and there and some
sleep," she said as if it was a regular routine.

"Tell me about Lapin ." he said, referring to a recent
case.

Nym couldn't help wondering why he had asked her about a
case that wasn't assigned to her but she gave a mental
shrug.
"Lapin a Lieutenant recently sent here from the USS
Artemis with amnesia. Blood and DNA testing confirm him to
be who he is believed to be. The blood and DNA testing were
necessary since the Artemis was in a squirmish with the
Romulans. He seems to have lost specifically the last 6
months but there are other pieces of his memory that are
affected as well.
Even with medications his progress has
been slow, which seems to be concerning the brass some as
his physical appearance also show some signs of torture."

She figured that was enough for a case she wasn't assigned
to or helping with as the other more junior counselor didn't
seem to want to even try any of Mnemosyme's suggestions.

Stephen said nothing but merely sat unmoving in his chair
looking at Nym directly. His expression told her nothing and
his level gaze did not falter.

Mnemosyme kept her gaze even with his as she waited for a
response. Her posture and steady stare all indicated the
comfort of the position she held.
If he wanted more he'd
have to ask for it, she was not repeating past mistakes like
she had made with the commodore.

"I expect two reports from you by this time tomorrow." He
said. "The first will be an
in depth evaluation of the case which you will now be in
charge of. The second will be a reasoning paragraph of why
you have an issue with authority. That's all"

He broke his gaze at last and turned his attention to a
recreational padd laying within reach of the chair which he
picked up and began to read, as though oblivious to the
young woman's presence.

"As you wish, but I do not have a problem with authority,"
she replied as she easily pushed herself off the wall and
began to move toward the door.
She had never disobeyed a
direct order ...maybe stretched the scope but never outright
disobeyed one. Her file was exemplary. The worst thing
that could be said except for the recent incident with the
Commodore was that she was a bit of a loner.

Stephen continued to read.
As far as he was concerned the
meeting was ended, the junior counsellor had her orders and
he would decide what her issues were when the report
arrived.
The door hissed open, paused and hissed shut but if he
registered the sound, it was impossible to tell.
