Reading through diagnostics Jade came across many PADDs that had
reports of diagnostics that the ship ran 24/7, but that was all it did
run the diagnostics and then a operations officer would need to look
over the results and make the adjustments themselves. Looking at the
diagnostic on the PADD Jade wondered how long this would take someone
to make the adjustments, so instead of having someone do it she
decided that she would do it. It was a diagnostic from EVS mainly the
heating and cooling system mainly trying to keep a nice equal
temperature through out the ship making sure it wasn't to hot or to
cold every once and while it became out of alignment just from
individuals altering it themselves.

The first thing she had to do was compare these diagnostics to the
last patch and see how far off they were to the norm and then enter
the numbers into an algorithm and then make the adjustments and then
run that to the newest diagnostic and if it didn't match up you would
start the process all over again. So Jade did this process three or
four times until it finally got into normal range and all of that took
her close to an hour and half, so she then counted through all the
diagnostics that had to be done like that and came to the conclusion
that it would take both alpha and beta shifts two days to finish all
of these. Figuring that there must be a better way of doing this Jade
opened up some data base files looking for anything that anyone as
done to solve this problem.

She knew of one way making a dedicated team to deal with these, but
that would mean pulling them from other tasks that need to be done.
Not saying that working on fixing the issues that the diagnostics
comes up with isn't important, but it's usually the last thing that
people do at the end of their shifts. While she was going through the
data base she came across the EMH program that was used for if there
was an over surge of wounded personnel and they needed some extra
hands. She pulled up the file on how they created the EMH trying to
figure out how they would program a hologram to perform minor repairs
on living creatures. "Computer pull up any other related topics about
hologram programs performing minor duties in different departments."
Jade told the computer.

It took a few moments, but it pulled up one more article a EEH
(emergency engineering hologram) it ran on the same principle of the
EMH, but it was used in engineering instead of sickbay, "computer pull
up all algorithms used in the operations department including the ones
that the ship uses?" Jade asked seeing how many algorithms operations
uses. Within seconds a list of algorithms popped up on the screen
there was close to 1500+ algorithms that operations uses daily
including the ones the ship does all on her own. A second thought
occurred instead of having a person work on all the adjustments to
certain diagnostics why not have a hologram that can run the
algorithms it self and then all the person has to do is double check
the work.

Jade decided that this might be worth bringing to the attention of the
CO or XO to get approval to start figuring out how to create a
hologram to deal with making minor adjustments to the EVS, sensors and
other minor applications. Looking up at the chronometer Jade realized
that it was almost 1 AM and that she needed to get some sleep before
she had to come back to work.

*** Infirmary * SB Unity ***

Rangis 'shift' in the infirmary was ending and she was glad
to be going home where, unless some disaster happened, she
and Shane could spend time together.
Martin was at his playgroup until late afternoon, so the
time would be just for the two of them until it was time to
collect their son.

The shifts that Rangi worked were flexible in that she
decided when she would go to the infirmary and how long she
would stay there. Alot of her time was taken up with the Med
Advisor side of her duties but she still tried to get to the
infirmary at least once every day.

Now she walked along the corridor that led from the CMOs
office to the main reception area and, nearing the end, saw
that Shane had arrived to meet her as he did as often as
duties allowed. She slowed her steps and watched him.
He was talking to someone waiting in reception, she didn't
know who. There were two others standing with them and all
except Shane stood to attention.
The conversation seemed to be light hearted for there were
smiles and polite laughter now and then but it struck Rangi
that that was exactly what it was...polite....and she felt a
touch of sadness that Shane was now somehow set apart from
everyone else.
No matter what the subject of conversations were, no matter
how many quips were exchanges, there was always the element
of politeness for he was the Commodore and it set an
invisible line that few dared to venture near and fewer
still ever dared to cross.
He turned his head and saw her so she speeded up again and
walked forward to meet him, smiling to him as she did so.

There was always dispute among high ranking officers about
what kind of CO-to-crew relation is the best. Some suggested
that comeradery and easy going was the best way (like J.T.
Kirk) others preferred a distant figure of a Captain (like
J-L. Picard), some something between – having a few
friends among his/her staff with others remaining behind a
safe line (like B. Sisko or C. Janeway).
Shane inclined to Picard's way ... as it was relatively
easy to build a barrier between the CO and his staff and
crew. That barrier helped to build some kind of respect or
admiration, but on the other end ... the CO was left along
and without real friends.
That was quite true, then there were only a handful of crew
on the whole huge UNITY that Shane would call friends.
Sure … there were many that had good working relations
with him and Shane would entrust them his life ... but he
could not imagine to share his ideas and dreams with them.
But there was a person Shane knew he could trust above all.
Rangi, his beloved and step mother to his adopted son.

He smiled widely and came towards her,
"It's wonderful to be able to meet you again" he said
and took her hand. He looked her in her eyes for a moment
and since he knew they were watched he said: "Let's go
home"

Their fingers squeezed and then released each others for
even if off duty, when still in uniform they kept to
appearances.

" Had a good morning?" Rangi asked looking up at him as the
headed out of the infirmary in the direction of the nearest
turbolift.

"Besides an angry Admiral, burned XO, compromised sensor
network and a cold green tea … yes. What about you?"

Rangi laughed at this description of his day so far.
"Well..." she said slowly, " I've just had a disgruntled
ambassador to deal with.."
She shook her head to dismiss the thoughts of her meeting
and added " I'll tell you about it later....but cold green
tea?...that's 'bad'!"

They grinned to each other and stepped inside the turbo lift
which arrived on cue as they reached it.Two crewmen stepped
out of the lift and Shane followed Rangi inside.
" I hope nothing will disturb the afternoon." Rangi
remarked as the doors closed behind them.

Shane hugged his beloved and said: "Now when most of my
staff is back on the UNITY, lets have them to worry with
things for a while. I asked Pakosii to delay anyone be it
even the President of the Federation. The afternoon is only
ours ... I missed you so when you were away"

Rangi closed her eyes, wrapped in Shanes strong arms and
hugged him back.
"I don't even want to think about it." she whispered, then
moving slightly raised her face to him, a slow smile curving
the corners of her lips.

**

Both of them arrived at their common quarters and entered
the hall. It took a while till their lips parted and Shane
said:
"I am very sorry that I had to send you to the Chimera.
When I learned about the Tal'shiar's plan to kidnap you
or Martin, I had to act quickly. I could not tell you …
cause you would not leave and I NEEDED you to be safe on the
Chimera.
I know that Chimera has always dangerous missions, but I
trust Rojac and his abilities and Tal'shiar would have a
LOT harder day to reach you on the Chimera then on an open
station like UNITY.

The same day as you left, I sent Martin with my brother on
Risa … all quiet through a civilian transport and under
guise.
We maintained only minimal contact and even Tal'shiar
cannot know everything and Risa is far away … and as you
know, both of them returned safe and sound two days prior to
you.
The only problem will now be to make little Martin used to
an 'ordinary' life … not all the tourist attractions
on Risa …"

"I understand why you had to do it." she said."..and as for
Martin, well, he likes the playgroup but I think being back
and able to spend time with 'you' again beats any attraction
that Risa can offer him."

She reached up and kissed his lips very gently and when he
released he, she turned away, disguarded her bag onto a
chair and said: " I can't wait to get out of this.!" as she
began loosening her uniform tunic.
She glanced back to him and stopped ,seeing him still
standing at the edge of the hall.

"Why are you looking like that?" she asked suspiciously as
he began to walk towards her, but the expression in her eyes
told him she thought she knew the reason and hoped that she
was correct.

"Hmmm … I think I can help you with that" he said in a
playful tone, slipping the tunic from her shoulders. "A
shower
would do it" he added, smiling, "maybe you could like to
have someone to rub your back …"

"Mmmm..well....who would you suggest?" she
asked innocently as though willing to consider any
possibilty.

"Well … you obviously need someone with great
experience, knowledge and personal bravery. Someone with a
responsible position and hard earned rank … someone like
… me!"

She looked him up and down pretending to be doubtful but
she couldnt
maintain the expression as she struggled not to laugh.

"Ok then ..." she said "...just as long as your hands aren't
cold." then the laughter overcame her when he rubbed
his hands together gleefully.

[USS Chimera] SD:240903.13 Joint Personal Log Cdr.Rick Rodgers & LtCdr. MaiKai Rodgers

=Rodgers' Quarters=
=Starbase UNITY=

Once Rick returned home, he went straight to work on breakfast.
He has saved up some eggs, but he had to replicate the rest of
the meal. Once finished, he put Mai's on a tray, along with a
coffee and orange juice. He placed a flower that he had picked
up before returning home on the side.

He took the tray into the bedroom where Mai was still resting,
though it didn't seem that she was asleep.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Rick said as he sat on the bed
next to Mai with the tray in his lap.

"Morning..." Mai grumbled.  She had been asleep for last couple
hours, but she still felt groggy and didn't want to get out of bed.

"I thought we have breakfast in bed this morning,' Rick said.

Mai used her arms to push herself up so she was sitting up more
in the bed.

He placed the tray in front of Mai.

"You never guess who I ran into this morning," Rick said.

"Hmm... Who would that be,dear?"  Mai asked as she took a bite
of her scrambled eggs.

"Your cousin Nanee," Rick said as he laid next to Mai.

Mai stopped in mid-chew.  Just her luck that Rick would run into her
on a starbase full of people.  She finished swallowing before adding,
"How nice.  And how is she?"  Mai continued on the conversation as
she took another bite of her breakfast.

"You never mentioned a cousin Nanee," Rick said. "She
apparently been stationed on Chimera. How interesting is that?"

"That is.  That's very nice," now Mai needed a swig of her orange juice
to suppress the lump building in her throat.  All of a sudden her body
was beginning to feel a bit too warm for her comfort.

"She seem like a nice person," Rick said. "A little on shy side, but nice.
Anyhow. I invite her to lunch with us. I hope you not mind."

"No, I don't mind.  I'm sure it'll be perfect," Mai smiled timidly as she
took another drink.

"Sure about that?" Rick said. "I mean ... I know how you feel about
certain members of your family. I just ... I hope I not out of line
about inviting her to lunch."

MaKai thought for a moment.  She wanted to choose her words wisely.
She wasn't sure how she felt about the whole situation.  "You weren't
out of line.  I just- well, honestly... I don't know.  I just don't know".
Mai didn't know what else to say.  Now she felt like she was going to
be sick. She was also trying not to cry.

Rick found himself nervously rubbing his hands together. He hadn't
done that since just before returning from Earth to Unity. He hadn't ever
done that in Mai's presence.

"I hope it works out," Rick said, looking at his hands. "Like I said, she
seems like nice person. And she is your family. I know you once told
me that me and my family was enough family for you, but ..."

Mai was on the verge of sobbing instead she moved the tray of food off
to the side and then grabbed a hold of Rick's hands.  "Come hold me,"
Mai's high emotions in her state were making her more needy than
usual.

Rick's hands trembled as he felt the continued need to rub them. But
Mai helped relax him and that need slowly ended. He held her as a
slight smile cross his face.

"You know, Rachel not here," he finally said.

"Yes, I know..." Mai allowed a smile to cross her face as well.  She
could tell Rick's worries were easing.

Rick continued grinning as he leaned over Mai and pushed the tray off
the bed, which went crashing onto the floor. He then grabbed the blankets
and pulled the covers over them.

====== begin PART II, Shane's office, SB 234:
UNITY =====

Shane turned back to Bren and Rick and said: "Until Mr.
Wright arrives, let's discuss the Detector and the
shipyard. A scout vessel could be of great value for us now,
since recognizance and Intel missions will become more
frequent. How long do you guys expect the time costs for
making the Detector fit for a mission?

"It determines what you want her for? In current state, even
after repairs, she won't be able to put up much of a fight,"
Rick said. "She may look like a Defiant, but not have the
same punch."

Shane nodded: "I am aware of Detector's lesser tactical
abilities. We will use her for stealth mission mainly, so
weapons aren't the biggest issue. Sensors and cloaking
device is what I have in mind for her. Dedicated and secured
computer core for data collecting and analyzing …"

"The Detector was created during time when it believed
Defiant-class unable to handle extensive weapons systems,"
Rick said. "So, she outfitted with most advanced sensor
system of the day. Even for today, pretty impressive. She
also built to maintain a cloaking device, though it had yet
to be installed prior to being abandoned."

Turning to Bren Shane said: "So be it. The first task of
the shipyard will be to upgrade the Detector. The second one
is to repair the shipyard and make it ready to build ships.
I have already a dozen of requests for Danube, Argo and
Peregrine runabouts from Starfleet Command … not speaking
about requests from General Bretam."

Rick simply nodded.

"If you can spare some engineers for us, it should take all
that long to get the Detector ready," Bren said. "I can try
to pull a few strings and have the necessary parts shipped
in within the next few days."

"You two seem to get well along and I believe you will
make an excellent team. I think you Commander Rodgers Could
take a more active role on the shipyard … under leadership
of Commander Ohmsford of course … since we all know that
you 'can't' assume a department head role"

"Understood, sir," Rick said.

+TAPS+ The Captain of the USS Jameson is here as you
requested, Sir" + announced Pakosii through the comm.

+TAPS+ Did he passes all the checks? + Shane asked.

+TAPS+ Yes, sir + Pakosii replied.

+TAPS+ Let him in please +

The elder man, in his 80s, walked into the office with a
security crewman on each side and wearing wrist restraints.
He inwardly smiled at the precautions being places on
someone of his advanced age.

"Thank you for the escort, gentlemen," Wright smiled. "It
was such a splendid walk."

Shane addressed the sergeant standing to Wright's right.
"Remove the restrains and both of you can leave". The
sergeant nodded and removed the restrains. Then both marines
left he room, leaving the four men alone.

"I am Commodore Guzman" Shane introduced himself,
"Commander of Special Forces First Task Force. We need to
talk about you and the device from the Detector. This
conversation needs privacy, but please don't think of
anything funny in the absence of the guards." Shane paused
and added: "Please take a seat. Can I get you anything for
drink?"

"A herbal tea would be nice. Any blend will do," Wright
leaned back in his chair.

"Commanders Ohmsford and Rodgers just reported about your
identity theft. That along would grant you a court martial,
but that's not my biggest problem. My problem is that
device found on the Detector. Is it really that powerful and
Commander Rodgers believes and if yes, who the hell
authorized a weapon of mass destruction?"

"Who authorized it? Many of the same people who were hell
bent on improving our firepower with the new Borg threat
that had arisen at the time. Any advantage was being sought.
I was .. well ... I was given free reign," Wright took a sip
of tea. "I helped with new torpedoes and improved phasers,
but the TechEx was what Starfleet was really looking for."

Wright was fully relaxed now as he stretched his legs out in
front of him, taking another sip of tea.

"Does it work? I don't know," Wright continued. "To an
extent, it'll work. Send whatever affected planet back to
the pre-industrial age. That's for sure. But how really
powerful it is ... now that is the real question. The only
way to answer it is to test it."

Shane looked over at Ohmsford and asked: "Your opinion
Commander?"

"I think testing it in the field is out of the question,"
Bren said as he sat up. "We would need specific conditions
to measure the outcome, conditions which can only be found
in a real life situation and not be recreated in a lab or a
simulation."

Nodding Shane said: "Testing your device isn't an
option. I Agree that the Borg threat was great at that time
and it required … lets say … less orthodox measures. But
now … even while in War with the Romulans, there is no
place for weapons of mass destruction in Starfleet … it
goes against all the principles of the Federation. That
device needs to be dismantled immediately." Shane looked
at Wright with a strange look and added: "Though a smaller
version of such a device could be of great use …"

"No problem," Wright said. "I can't say that I'll be
disappointed to see it destroyed. I'll even be glad to
help."

"Commander Ohmsford and Rodgers will disable the device;
your assistance here is not needed. Well … Commander
Ohmsford means that Starfleet could need someone of your
abilities … but how could I trust someone who pretended to
be dead and stole an another man's identity?"

"Commodore, I didn't fake my death and assume the identity
of Captain Richards on my own. I'm an engineer and
scientist, not an intel operative," Wright said.

Shane pierced Wright with his stare and asked: "So, you
say that Intel helped you? SFI or perhaps SSFI?"

"I'm not certain exactly whom, and I didn't really care at
the time, but I do know why," Wright said.

"Intel works of its own accord," Bren sighed. "Trying to
understand why or how they do anything is like trying to
understand why time moves forward. I wouldn't be surprised
if it had to do with the Romulans, though. Intel keeps a
very close eye on R&D for any possible infiltrations. The
R&D Vault is probably one of the most highly guarded
facilities in Starfleet."

Shane nodded: "A good point" Turning to Wright, Shane
said: "But I suppose there was a certain reason why intel
would lend their hand in your case, Mr. Wright"

"I was close to developing a sensor array that could detect
cloaked ships," Wright said. "Unfortunately, there were some
minor difficulties, and the Tal Shiar got wind of it, so
someone in Starfleet thought it best to put me under wraps.
The idea of Romulan agents hunting me down did not seem too
pleasant of an idea. So, my death was faked."

Shane's got interested in the old man's words.
"Detecting cloaked ship?" he asked. "What kind of
detection do you mean?". His old tactical side got all
excited. Detecting cloaked ships was always the issue in
battle with Romulans and even Klingons. Cloak was one of the
most important tactical advantages in space combat for last
3 centuries...

"I'm talking about being able to detect a cloaked ship as if
it we not even cloaked. It would have made cloaking devices
obsolete," Wright said. "Hell, I could have developed a
smaller sensor to put on a starship."

"That would be quite an important technological
breakthrough" Shane agreed. "The tactical value would be
really great ... but you mentioned some ... minor
difficulties"

"Minor difficulties as in that the Federation did not want a
device that would provoke the Romulans ... or even the
Klingons for that matter," Wright explained. "Not that I
don't blame them. But it doesn't take much to provoke the
Rommies. Our little war now if a fine example of that."

Nodding, Shane said: "True". After a while he added:
"Well, this is really a hard nut to crack" He looked at
the three men saying: "This is far beyond my authority to
make any final decision ... but I am the most senior officer
around and we need a decision, even if only a temporal one.
I will inform SSF Command and until they decide about your
future Mr. Wright, you shall stay under your disguise as
Starfleet Captain. The last thing I need are Romulan agents
hunting for you on my station. You shall submit a request
for extended medical leave to my office and it will be
granted. You will stay on the UNITY, under watch of
Commander Ohmsford. I will not arrest you or put guards on
your tail, but please be not mistaken ... you will be
constantly watched. Your level of cooperation with Commander
Ohmsford and Rodgers on our tech projects will be considered
when a final decision will be made. Disobeying any part of
my order will mean immediate arrest for you Mr. Wright, I
hope I made myself absolutely clear."

Shane nodded towards the three men and added: "You are all
dismissed!"

[USS Chimera] SD 240903.12 Joint Log Captain Cropa Rojac (CO) & Lt. JG Tom Jaqrdan (CSEC)

[Ready Room - Deck One - USS Chimera NCC96899-C]

Tommy knocked on the door and waited for the captain to tell him to enter. As he waited, he tried to compose his thoughts and decided on what he would say.

"Come." Came the customary reply, Rojac's voice print provided the clearance for the computer to open the door to the office. The Captain looked up to the form entering the room and quickly identified it as his chief of security. "Lieutenant." He greeted the man as he leaned back away from the work on his desktop. "What can I help you with?"

Tommy first asked, "Sir, when you asked me to help with the fire investigation why did you not tell me Harbright was dead? He was a friend, and he made me the person I am today. He was like a father. " Tommy waited for Rojac to speak.

Rojac took deep breath and leaned backward in his chair, swiveling it slightly to the left as he did so. "Because Harbirght's death was a separate matter, Lieutenant. And a matter that is under strict Taskforce jurisdiction. It is because of your relationship with Harbright that I assigned you to the Fire case and not the Harbright one - you are too personally connected to Harbright to remain objective. I'm sure you understand."

Tommy nodded his head," I understand, I guess." Tommy bowed his head a moment, then looked back up." About the investigation. No one is telling us anything. Starbase Security won't even see us. Can you help with this?"

"Yes." Rojac sighed. "The base's Security situation is in a bit of turmoil at the moment with the departure of Joeleco." He pulled up  UNITY's chain of command on his desktop and studied it for a moment. "Security is under the command of LtCol Pont Brillant, the station XO at the moment. Though he is more than likely very busy with the arrival of Admiral LeGrand's fleet. I'll through some flagship commander clout around and set you up with the Deputy Security Chief of UNITY."

"Thank you, sir. That would be a big help." Tommy thought, ( With Johnson sitting there already, maybe he will already have the info when I get back to the station office.)

"One more thing, Lieutenant, that I can take care of now." Rojac said. "Computer: Command code Rojac-Alpha-Six-Kappa."

[Command code authorized.] The monotone voice responded softly.

"Give Lieutenant Junior Grade Tom Jardan, Chief of Security of USS Chimera complete access to all First Taskforce files regarding the Explosion and fire in UNITY's shuttlebay for the next 48 hours." Rojac said.

The computer beeped an acknowledgement.

" Um, 48 hours sir? Not a lot of time, sir." (Wow) Tommy cleared his throut and waited.

"Forty-eight hours is all I'm allowed to give you, Lieutenant. Make the best of it." Rojac replied.

" Aye, sir. May I assume that I will have full authority over the investigation?" Tommy waited for the reply.

"You may. Dismissed."

Tommy came to attention and turned and left the room.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240903.12 Joint Duty Log Cdr.Rick Rodgers & LtJg.Nanee Quiocho

=Main Promenade=
=Starbase Unity=

Rick sipped on his coffee and looked out at the busy foot traffic
from his seat in one of the starbase's many establishments. By
the looks of it, it did not even seem to be the morning.

MaiKai was still asleep when he slid on some civilian clothes and
went out to take Rachel to her class. Well, it actually wasn't a
school day, but her class had planned a special all-day project,
which Rachel seemed to be excited about.

Rick was also excited.

That meant that he would be able to spend most of the day
alone with Mai. He smiled inwardly at the thought.

Nanee had gone into a not-so-crowded establishment aboard the
starbase trying to figure out how she could keep herself occupied
before she would need to board the chimera.  She didn't know
anybody and the person she did know, she wasn't sure that they
would be interested in anything she had to say even if she had the
nerve to speak words that have been needed to say for years.

Nanee was sipping a vanilla latte that she had just ordered when
her thoughts slipped into what she would say if she was ever
approached by Mai and what they would talk about.  It had been
too long since Nanee had talked to her own cousin and felt that
even though Mai wasn't associating with anyone else in the family
that MaiKai should still be able to talk to her since she never did
anything wrong compared to some.  While thinking she had put
her cup back down and started to twirl her finger around the edge
of the cup.  She became so overwhelmed by her thoughts that she
accidentally knocked her cup to the floor shattering.

After dropping Rachel off, Rick decided to grab a quick cup of coffee
before returning to their quarters to prepare breakfast. As he sat,
he saw a woman drop her own cup onto the floor next to him. He
quickly stood to give her a hand.

"Here, let me give you a hand," Rick said as he knelt and picked up
the now broken cup.

"Oh, ummm... Thank you," Nanee almost mumbled.  Unlike her
cousin, Nanee was a bit shy.  She was already bending down out to
clean up the mess when this stranger had seemed to jump in.

"Please, let me order you anot ... another drink," Rick said as he
motioned to the waiter.

"No, really.  That won't be necessary," Nanee really didn't like
confrontation and just wanted to clean up the mess and get out of
there fast before she embarrassed herself further.

"I insist," Rick smiled. "You seem to be having a difficult day. It least
I can do."

He then offered her a seat at his table when he realized that all of the
other tables were full.

Nanee nodded and took the seat that was offered.  She didn't want to
be there now, but she didn't want to be too rude and leave either.  This
wasn't helping the day she was having at all.

When the waiter returned with the drink, Rick handed him the broken
mug.

"You stationed on Unity?" Rick asked.

Nanee was spaced and seemed to realize that the stranger had moved
his lips and formed actual words, "Yes, for now.  I will be boarding the
Chimera when their- I mean our rest and relaxation is over with".  She
probably sounded all jittered up.  She was spitting out words so quickly.
Nanee was too nervous and she knew she didn't have a grip on much
these days except for her job.  Now that she did well and she hoped
that she would soon prove herself in that arena.

"Really? I was stationed on previous three Chimeras. Good crew. I
sure you will do well," Rick said.

"Thanks..." Nanee blushed quite a bit.  Random people weren't known
for having pleasantries and though Nanee appreciated it, it made her
feel uncomfortable just the same.

"I .... I am stationed here, on Unity ..... with my wife. She was also
on Chimera," Rick said.

All Nanee felt she could do was nod timidly.  This was all too weird for
her to all happen close together.

Rick grinned and shook his head and was slight embarrassed.

"Oh, I sorry. I should have introduced myself earlier. I'm Rick.
Commander Rick Rodgers," he offered her a hand. "And you are?"

Nanee knew that name, but couldn't place it at the moment.  She was a
bit too frazzled. "Nanee- I mean that is... I'm Lieutenant Junior Grade
Nanee Quiocho".  One of Nanee's nervous ticks was to play with her hair.
She began to twirl her black long hair on her right index finger.

Rick stared at the woman for a moment. MaiKai rarely talked about her
family and the name Nanee never came up. Even so, he couldn't help
but notice a slight resemblance.

'Couldn't be,' he thought as he just smiled.

Nanee noticed the man smiling and thought it really creepy.  She really
didn't want to be rude and grimace, so instead she put on a timid smile.

"Just thinking that it a coincidence," he said. "My wife's maiden name is
Quiocho.."

Nanee stopped for a second.  She had to gulp down hard on the drink
that wanted to shoot out her nose.  All of a sudden she had a headache.
"Oh, my... I'm sorry it just clicked in my head that you said you were 'Rick
Rodgers'..."  Nanee paused for a second.  When Rick still looked perplexed
she continued, "MaiKai...?" when Rick nodded she continued further, "Yes,
ummm... She would be my first cousin on my father's side..."  Awkward
enough, Nanee knew that MaiKai had never ever talked of her family to
anyone.  Safe to say, Nanee really didn't talk much about them either
except Mai.

Rick's eyes opened wider.

"Really? Wow, that's ...," Rick didn't know how to react. He wondered how
Mai felt about her cousin ... what kind of relationship they had, if any. "Does
she know you're here?"

"I'm not sure," is what Nanee managed to say before reverting back to
sipping on her latte.

"Well, if you not busy, why not stop by later today," Rick said. "Maybe lunch
or dinner or something ..."

"Maybe..." Nanee seemed to voice to herself.

"How about lunch then? Do you know where our quarters located?" Rick
asked.

"I'm pretty sure I could figure it out," Nanee didn't mention that she had stopped by before because she didn't know what even happened to the note she left.

"Then I expect you about ... how noon sound?"

"Sounds great," Nanee smiled for Rick.  True she was excited to being able to see family, but she had no idea how Mai was feeling about all this.

"Excellent," Rick stood. "I better be getting back. I look forward to seeing
you later."

Nanee waved Rick off and tried to finish the rest of her cup.  She hoped the latte would liquidate the new knots forming in her stomach.

=Rick and Mai's Quarters=
=Starbase Unity=

"Hurrrrry. She'll be home soooon," Rachel insisted as Rick finished
up work.

"I almost got it," Rick said, holding a wrench in one hand. "There,
that should do it."

Rachel clapped her hands, "Can I use it?"

"No, it for your mother," Rick said. "Maybe later."

After closing his tool kit, he stood and brushed off his pants and
washed his hands.. Rachel followed suit, copying Rick by washing
her hands, even though they were not dirty.

As soon as they walked out into the main living area, the door
opened and Mai entered.

"Hey, sweetheart, welcome home," Rick smiled as he walked up
to her and kissed her.

MaiKai gave her husband yet another kiss.  She missed him so
much and wasn't use to having him back home just yet.  "Alright
you two,  what are you up to?"  Mai figured people only said
'welcome home' when there was a surprise or when the person had
been gone away from home a long time.

"We have a surprise for you, mommy," Rachel grinned.

Mai tried her best to bend down to Rachel's level.  Even doing that
was beginning to become a bit of a task.  She tickled Rachel, "What
is it then?"

"It wouldn't be surprise if we just told you, would it?" Rick said
as he pulled out a piece of cloth and wrapped it around her
head like a blindfold.

{{Oh great}} Mai thought.  The last possible thing she could have in
her state would be to go blind.  Mai tensed up a bit, but knew she'd
be all right with Rick and Rachel there.

"This way," Rick said as he held onto one of Mai's hands while
Rachel grabbed the other.

They led her through the main bedroom, then onto the
bathroom. Once there, Rick removed the blindfold, allowing Mai
to see where a large jazzuzi/tub had been installed.

"I thought it could help you relax," Rick said. "It has all the settings
anyone could ever want.. You like?"

"Of course I like it!" Mai whipped around and clung onto Rick.
MaiKai really did appreciate all the efforts Rick was attempting since
he hasn't been home at all lately.

"Good, because for the next couple days, you do nothing but rest,"
Rick said. "Your wish is my command. I take care of Rachel and
anything else that need taken care of ... like dinner. You ... you
just take it easy."

"Why?"  MaiKai wasn't sure if something had happened that she
wasn't aware of, "Why all this?"

"Because you deserve it," Rick said, giving her another kiss.

Mai was just beaming ear to ear.  This is all that she wanted and she
didn't even need this high-tech tub.  She just wanted someone to
appreciate it for all that she'd been doing.

Rick leaned to Mai, grinned and whispered, "Why don't you go ahead
and test it out. Once I get Ray busy with her drawings, I might join
you."

Mai grinned. first to herself and then looked to Rick.  This was truly
the remedy that she needed.  She didn't know how much she had
really missed Rick or how badly she really need him to be home until
he spoke words that chilled her spine.

Rick gently laid a hand on Mai's belly before heading to the door.

"Come on, kiddo. Lets see about what we will have for dinner," Rick
said as he reached for Rachel's hand and the two walked out of the
bathroom.

An hour later, he saw Mai laying quietly in the tub with her eyes closed.
He undressed and slipped in with her.

"This IS relaxing," he said softly, sliding in behind her.

"Yes, it is... Rick-," true enough that it was relaxing, but Mai thought
Rick would've had more pressing matters to attend to now.

"Don't worry," Rick said, sliding his hands along her arms. "Rachel will
be busy for next hour. She say she working on painting for you."

Mai nodded slowly then took in another slow deep breath.  "And what
about yourself?  Don't you need more rest than what you've been
getting for work?"  With pediatrics, Rachel, and the new baby Mai may
be overwhelmed, but not enough to stop thinking of others first.

"Shipyard won't be ready until day after tomorrow. I not have to be back
to work until then," he started rubbing her shoulders, then kissing them
and her neck. "For now, I at your beckon call."

"Mmm... Sounds too good to be true..." Mai replied as she took another
deep breath with her eyes still closed.

Rick grabbed a wash cloth and began to rub it against Mai's back and
shoulders. He wanted to make love to her then and there but, while
Rachel may be busy painting, he didn't want to take the chance.

That didn't mean he couldn't be a little frisky.

It's suppose to say MaiKai Rodgers in the subject title. I was doing so well. In my defense, I had just been working on a Nanee joint log.  Apologies Rick baby ;) .

MaiKai was sitting on the edge of her bed.  She had just gotten home when she had found a note rested up against their door.  She recognized the big white flower from her home back on Earth in Hawaii, then she recognized the handwriting, and then the signature Nanee.  At first reading the letter, Mai had gotten chills up her spine.  She hadn't talked to anyone in her family for years.  Almost countless years, but she knew roughly how many.  About five.  five long years of silence among family.  Considering Mai's traditional background, it was even more shocking to her that it had been five years.  Hawaiians were known for being all about "Ohana" or  the family.  To them, family means no one gets left behind or ... forgotten.

Over the years Mai had let herself be forgotten or at least tried.  She was mostly an outspoken person, but for the past few years, living to the shadows had done her well, or at least so she thought.  MaiKai just didn't know what to do now.  Nanee and Mai had always had a really good relationship for being cousins.  It was just ruined when Mai's father had a falling out with his brother, Nanee's father.  She never gotten to see or really talk to her cousin since.  She wasn't even sure what she would say now.  Mai was thinking what if Nanee wanted something from her.  That was the last thing she needed was negligent family members asking her for hand-outs.  It's true that Mai has been a bit harsh when it comes to her family, but from her point of view, she's had a right to be headstrong.

Mai ran her fingers over the edges of the letter first.  She then lifted up the note up to her face to see if she could get a scent from the flower.  She did.  She wasn't sure what the scent would be called, but she knew it took her to place that would be hard to describe with words: home by the beach.  The fresh breeze from the ocean, mixed with a woodsy smell probably from the palm trees and then a bitter-sweet smell of the house and civilization.  Mai took the deep breath in so slowly she could of sworn her heart skipped a beat.

MaiKai heard a noise behind her which made her jump a bit.  Rick must be home.  And sure enough, "What do you got there, honey?" Rick asked upon seeing his wife with a somewhat relaxed look on her face and paper in hand and the look had now been replaced with a deer caught in headlights.

"Nothing," Mai stammered as she buried the note for now in a drawer in one of the bed side tables.  She turned around quickly and flashed a smile that hopefully wouldn't show that she felt flushed.

***SB Unity***

Tommy and Johnson met at the bar in a corner. They were both fustrated, as so far nothing had come of the investigation. In fact, no one has said anything to them at all. It was peculiar, and Tommy was saying so. " I'm getting real tired of the phrase,'It's classified, sir' How are we supposed to help if no one will tell us anything? Did you get to see the crime scene?Johnson shook his head." The guards wouldn't so much as open the door for a peek. I got pretty much the same thing."

Tommy sighed and tried to think. " Did you get anything at all?" Johnson took out a padd. " Just basics, sir. a paragragh saying that there was an incident, and an assaination." Tommy frowned. " Who was killed? The captain never mentioned a murder." Johnson looked at the padd, turned pale, looked at Tommy with a strange face, and said,"Lernen Harbright."

Tommy looked up at a scared Johnson. He also saw several other people who were looking at him with concern in their faces. Johnson was saying,"... OK, sir? Wake up. Sir?" Tommy moved his head, whick was hurting and asked," What happened? Why am I on the floor?" " You passed out. After screaming loudly. thought ... Well, you must have known Harbright." " I did. He trained me. For Betazed. This just got real personal."

Tommy pulled himself back into his chair and told the people that he would be OK. As they moved away, Tommy spoke." OK, new plan. I want you to go to station security and park yourself in their office. Demand to see the chief and do not take no for an answer. I am going to see the captain, and will meet you there afterwards. " Johnson nodded his head and left.

[Fighter Operations Labratory 1 - Deck 14 - USS Chimera NCC96899-C]

"Your not taking an R&R, Captain?" Captain Cropa Rojac asked his Squadron Commander as he entered the quiet labratory. Xerxes appeared to be the sole occupant along with the myriad of LCARS status displays and data-files of the Lancers, Shadow, the Ameratasu and their concurrent components. "Or do you find research relaxing?"

Anya laughed as she twisted round in her seat and indicated that likewise he should take a seat.  "Research is never relaxing Captain, in fact usually quite the opposite.  I will be taking a brief trip to Trill although I am waiting for my traveling companion to arrive back before departing.  At the moment I'm trying to come up with plans for a new Anti-Ship Missile."

"It sounds quite interesting." Rojac replied.  "To tell the truth, Captain, I'm glad I found you here. I wanted to approach you for a proposal that I need your expertise for and also to ask for your permission for something."

"Well to be honest Captain I doubted you were here on a social call.  But if its a favor you want then I'll help how I can.  Between yourself and Harbright you provided enough convincing to the brass to let me build my Lancers.  For that I owe you thanks, not a lot of people have helped me out in life so I am appreciative.  Let me know what you need."  Anya smiled as she replied.

Rojac nodded. "Article one: Federation Warhammer are severely outdated and outgunned on this battle field. It is badly in need for a replacement." he stated. "I wanted your help in proposing a new anti-ship and tactical bomber fighter design. One that could support anti-ship combat and be used for air support in planetary assaults. Would this be possible?"

"To be honest it's already possible using my Lancers they are designed to be a multirole fighter by nature capable of taking on Capital Ships, Close Air Support on ground troops and good air to air capabilities against fighters.  In that scenario it's only new and better weaponry that needs to be developed.  However if you are looking for something which packs and even bigger punch I do have one design in progress but at a very early stage of design called Halberd."  Anya said.

"What would you need, and how long would you need to get something like this done?" The captain asked.

"At least nine months design time for Halberd plus a full design team, minor shipyard facilities and like with the Lancers full access to any tech R & D has in development.  To be perfectly honest though I don't think that a tactical bomber should be our main priority.  Our main source of concern should be the Romulan Scorpion II and its capabilities which are so far unknown."  Anya replied gravely with a sigh.

"That's what your Lancers are for, Captain. I'd care to estimate that their deployment was as confusing to them as their new Scorpions were to us." Rojac said. "I'm trying to get the Commodore to use the shipyard towed from the Tarangor Nebula to be used to produce your new class of fighters for distribution throughout the Taskforce, and eventually the fleet. Valkyries just are not cutting it against Scorpions. As for your Halberd, as we try and retake captured colonies from Romulan troops, we are going to need some heavy air support."

"Finally thinking about an offensive then...I'll see what I can do about speeding up the design process for the Halberd but bear in mind that its at a far earlier stage of the design process than the Lancers were when they asked me to build them.  So there is a good chance it may take longer to roll them out."  Anya replied.

"I'll see what I can negotiate in terms of facilities and personnel.  I don't want to have to lose you aboard this ship though." Rojac replied. "On to topic number two: we've already touched on it briefly. I want your formal permission to send Lancer plans to Commander Ohmsford and Rodgers to begin Lancer production in the new shipyards."

"Firstly you won't have to lose me of the ship quite yet as we're nowhere close to building a prototype yet plus there is one more thing I want for the Halberd project...I want access to the Voyager Files.  Yes I know that's a taboo subject given some of what it contains although I won't need any of the information concerning the omega particle.  In particular I want information on the Ablative Armour that alternate future Janeway gave them even though we haven't particularly successful at recreating it so far.  As far as beginning mass production of the AX-02 Lancer is concerned the test phase is still ongoing so any changes that I make will have to be followed up at that end likewise if they want to make any changes they consult with me in advance.  Other than that as long as their security is tighter than a priest's sphincter I have no major objections to allowing production to commence."  Anya replied.

"Good." Rojac smiled. "I'll talk to Intelligence about clearance for those files. And I'll send Commander Ohmsford the good news on the Lancers." He stood from his chair. "Thank you, Captain. I look forward to reviewing your initial proposals."

"I look forward to creating something new.  Oh and Captain, don't work too hard during R&R.  The last thing we need is you burning yourself out through overwork."  Anya replied returning her attention to the screens in front of her.

[USS Chimera] SD 240903.11 | SB Unity | Joint Log, Cmdrs Summers (1TF Med) & Ohmsford (1TF Sci/Eng)

Bren Ohmsford <ohmsford83@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

= SB Unity - Serendipity, Promenade =

Bren looked at the tall candlesticks that adorned the small
table in the restaurant, hoping his guests would arrive
soon. He had made reservations for four at Serendipity; for
himself, Liev, Rangi and Shane, but Liev had decided not to
come at the last minute.

The dinner had been a "tradition" started while he was CO of
the Chimera, but due to the short stay in the chair, the
tradition didn't last very long. But now that they were all
back on Unity, Bren thought it was a good time to revive it.
At least it would give the officers a chance to socialise
and see each other somewhere other than a conference room or
the command deck.

Rangi, greeted at the door, was shown to the table where
Bren was sitting. He stood up as she approached and waited
until she was seated. "I'm so sorry, but Shane won't be
here." she said as the waiter hovered nearby. " It was a
last minute hiccup and he sends his apologies."

"Don't worry," Bren replied with a small smile. "Liev isn't
making it either. He says he's feeling a little under the weather, so has
decided to stay in."

A few moments were spent in organising a drink then the
waiter left them alone to peruse the menu.

"We were ready to come out," Rangi explained " ...waiting
for Laura, our babysitter, to arrive. She is usually so
punctual but then she called to say her boyfriend had
arranged a surprise birthday party for her
and..well..obviously she couldnt leave it so she called us
to explain and Shane said he would stay behind and care for
Martin.. I'm so sorry after you've gone to all the trouble
of arranging it."

"Oh, it's no trouble at all," Bren scoffed. "I hear he's
been spending a lot of time with Starfleet brass lately... I'm sure he'd
rather like to spend time with his son. And with you. You
didn't have to come if you'd rather spend time with them."

" I couldnt give up the chance of an excellent dinner."
Rangi replied with a touch of amusement in her eyes. "...and
though Shane would have enjoyed it too, he treasured the
time he can share with martin."

Bren smiled. "Well that's good. Things have been so busy
that we haven't had a chance to catch up since I came
to Unity. How have you been?"

"I'm fine now thank you," she said "..never better, though
you might have heard I had to spend time in a stasis unit?"

At the mention of the stasis unit, Bren frowned. "While on
the Chimera? No...
what happened? I have to say people were very tight lipped
about your
assignment to the Chimera. Official reason was that there
was a shortage
of medical staff, but to be honest... I'm not sure I
believed that."

"Mmmm..that wasn't strictly true." Rangi replied. " When
LtCmdr Quiocho suddenly returned
to the base it left the cmo position vacant and because of
the time factor, someone had to be found fast.
That was the official version.
Actually Shane wanted me away from Unity and that was too
good an opportunity to miss."

"Away from Unity? For what reason," Bren quickly asked, then
added as an after thought. "Sorry, just stop me if I'm prying
too far."

Rangi smiled to the kind face. " It's alright." she said. "I
don't mind you knowing what I know. Some things are always classified.Shane
wanted to ensure Martin and I were safe. Unfortunately...well...I
became very ill...hence the stasis unit."

"I see," he said as the waiter brought their drinks. It was
obviously quite serious if she needed to be put in a stasis unit, but
she seemed fine now and Bren didn't want to push the subject too much.

"Would you like to order now?" the waiter asked.

Rangi handed the menu back to him. " I'll have the salmon
please." she said. He gave a small bow then turned to bren " And for you Sir?"
he enquired.

"The steak, please, medium rare," Bren said, also handing
his menu back. "Haven't had that in a while. I'm supposed
to watch my diet but what the hell."

Rangi laughed "Well, speaking as a CMO I have to advise you
to do that, but then again, what would life be without one or two
indulgences now and then?" She raised her glass.
" To Good food in moderation and to good company in full."

"Hear, hear," Bren said and raised his glass.
"How's Martin adjusting to life on the starbase?" he asked.

"He's enjoying it." Rangi said but paused, not wanting to
disclose too much about Martins time away from Unity which
had more or less coincided with her own absence.
" You must make time and come and visit us." she said.

"Does he ever ask about his birth parents?"

The arrival of their meal paused their conversation and as
the food was set out before them, Rangi thought back to the
events which had brought Martin into their lives. The Mirror
universe had been something to experience and, if the
situation could have been different, would have been
fascinating.
She would have liked to have talked to Martins real mother
much more than she had and to have found out about her life.
The time had been short...too short and the end had been
disasterous with her mirrored self and Shanes too both
losing their lives.
The waiter fussed around then finally left them to enjoy
their food and Rangi was able to answer Brens question.

"He doesn't mention them much now." she said. "At first it
was difficult...for all three of us. We went on a steep
learning curve. " She gave Bren a rueful smile. " Shane and
I..well...we suddenly became parents to a two years old and
Martin was stuck with people he didnt know."

"The few times that I've seen him with you, he seemed to be
adjusting well," Bren commented. His first and only mission as
Chimera's captain had seen the ship slip into a parallel universe, the
gateway to which was controlled by the mysterious transdimensional
key artifacts, one of which had been destroyed and another of
which remained in the custody of the R&D artifacts vault.

"Yes..and he coped amazingly well. We didnt know anything
about him. His favourite toys or food or...anything."

"Not that an event such as losing one's parents is ever
easy, but I think he was fortunate that it happened at an early
age," Bren said. "It makes adjustment so much easier."

Rangi nodded. " Yes...yes I suppose it does."
They each concentrated on their meals and began to eat.

"I've been catching up with some of Commander Harker's old
logs," he said between bites. "He did some really good work.
It's a shame Starfleet has to lose such good officers. I see he assisted you as
well with the Solrin vaccine?"

Again Rangi nodded, unable to answer until she had swallowed
the morsel of Salmon.

"Yes he did. It was a stroke of luck that some Romulan
refugees had had a similar condition. That treatment was the
basis of ours."

Bren nodded. "I haven't had a chance to go down to the
planet yet. Have you been?"

" No, not yet, but Scott was telling me that
its very lovely in some areas even quite close to the main sett
Shane had suggested a day
for us there...a picnic, you know the sort of thing?" She
smiled at Bren, happiness at the prspect clear to see.

"That doesn't sound half bad," he replied. "When... if
things quieten down I think I should go down and have a look around my
self. Terek reports the planet has valuable mineral deposits, but I look
forward to experiencing the scenery."

"We're fortunate to have such a place so nearby." Rangi
said. " Holodecks are all very well but there's nothing
like 'real' freshair."

"I second that," Bren grinned.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240903.11 Personal Log, Cmdr. Athena Wellington, CCON

----------
Start Log
----------

Athena stood looking at the architecture of the impressive building in front of her.  She took a deep breath as her eyes reveled in the color of the blue sky.  {I feel like I had to do a bit of double talk to get and now...}  Her thoughts were cut short by the arrival of a young, dark haired Hybrid male in what looked like leather armor.  The look was accompanied by a Claymore made from black metal resting over his right shoulder.

"Welcome Commander Wellington.  It has been too long since you were last here at the ball to celebrate the Liberation.  My name is Tadakatsu, I've been instructed to guide you to his majesty King Asano who awaits you on the Ballroom Terrace."  He bowed then swept his arm indicating for her to walk along side him.

"Please, call me Athena," she requested not caring for the formality.  "I appreciate your help."  She followed him and in remembering some of the layout from before manage to take a couple of the turns before the direction was indicated.  "I enjoyed the ball"  She commented making a bit of small talk.

"Certainly Athena and we Hybrids enjoyed you pouring a drink over one of the Erassian nobles.  Such inflexible creatures they are so your actions did provide a good bit of entertainment."  Tadakatsu replied making his way through the ballroom main doors.

"Just don't let that tidbit of information be any more than an accident when its retold.   I get the feeling it might not be appreciated in some circles."  She smiled at the young man and the return smile felt conspiratorial  and then they walked through a set of door to the balcony.

"I wouldn't worry too much about the nobles their heyday of power is long since passed.  These days it's the Government and the Corprations you have to worry about."  Tadakatsu led her out onto the Ballroom Terrace which commanded an impressive view over the sea with the dramatic cliffs dropping away beneath it.  "Your Majesty may I present Commander Athena Wellington of the Starfleet Special Forces."

Tadakatsu bowed and backed off into the Ballroom.  The young King Asano said "Lady Athena it is a pleasure to be in your presence once again.  I extend to you a warm welcome on behalf of myself and my people.  Won't you sit and have some ice tea with me?"

"It would be a pleasure," she said and sat down where indicated.  "Have you thrown many more parties since I was here last," she asked conversationally and took a sip of ice tea from her glass.

"I'm afraid not, mostly political meetings and corporate meetings.  One of the sacrifices made to enter this society really."  Asano said sipping his drink as he watched the woman opposite.  "So I hear you are now engaged to Lord Defender Ivanov.  How is that going for you?"

"Long," she answered.  She tapped her fingers on the glass that she held, "that really isn't an answer is it?"

"Depends on whether you are a psychologist or not I would suppose.  Probably fortunately I'm a mere strategist so why not tell me exactly why you are here?"  Asano replied.

"I was hoping maybe to speak with Viktor while I was here as well as getting to know Susan better," She stated calmly and set her glass back on the table.

"As much as I wish the Lord Defender was here for guidance he isn't.  As far as I'm aware the second fleet are conducting defensive operations within the Grand Banks which is a massive nebula formation between the Rios and Erass System.  There is a lot of interference affecting the comms in that area so direct communication probably won't be possible.  If you want a definite way of contacting him then your best bet is a telepathic transmission through Susan."  Asano sighed and took another sip of his drink.

"Communications seem to be difficult all over."  She lifted her glass to her lips and took another sip.  "Perhaps I should take my leave as a good strategist could only help things along."

"If you must Lady Athena, Susan is in the deepest part of the facility you can go there now if you want although there have been rooms set up for you on the top floor.  Suit yourself which you want to visit first, Tadakatsu will be willing to see to any needs you have and guide you anywhere within the facility."  Asano replied.

"Thank you so much.. I just might freshen up before I see Susan and I'm quite sure I shouldn't be taking up any more of your valuable time, but I do appreciate you taking the time," She smiled as she stood to take her leave.

Athena stepped into the ball room and Tadakatsu appeared.  "I think I'd like to freshen up if you don't mind showing me to my rooms," she asked.  Even if she had been told that it was the young mans job she felt it only polite to ask and not just take for granted.

"Naturally Athena please follow me.  Don't worry about being blunt with us.  Each of us was created to fufil individual tasks from those like the Royal Assassin whose job it is to seek out and destroy dangers to the King to myself designed to serve and protect the King directly.  We each adhere to our place in life."  Tadakatsu said as he led the way to the guest rooms.

[USS Chimera] ||SB 234: UNITY|| SD 240903.10 Joint Duty Log, Cmdr. Bren Ohmsford & Cmdr. Rick Rodgers & Commo. Shane Guzman

"shane.guzman@mojwap.sk" <shane.guzman@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

PART I

====== 1st TF CO office, reception area, SB 234:
UNITY ====

Pakosii looked up from his desk on the two man approaching
him. He knew the Science advisor well enough to guess who
the other man was. It was Commander Rodgers, ex-CEO on the
Chimera and ex-CEO of the UNITY. He knew that the Commodore
was expecting the couple and said politely: "Commanders,
please take a seat for a moment, I check up with the
Commodore immediately"

Rick looked over at Bren, then down at one of the chairs.
Before he could take a seat, the lieutenant spoke.

"The Commodore is expecting you, sirs, but before you go,
I must ask you to confirm your identity by a retinal
scan". The group of six marines watching over the room
pierced both man with their stares. One would say that they
longed to trigger the gun.

Rick had met with Shane a few times when he was transferred
over to Unity. Of course, that was a few months ago. Still,
he felt that the security precautions were a bit odd.

"We not going a bit overboard, are we, lieutenant?" Rick
asked.

"I am sorry for the inconvience, Commander" Pakosii
said, "but both of you were out of the UNITY for longer
then 4 hours. This is a new security measurement following
the death of Commander Harbright. Afterall, you could be
Changelings, Metamorphs … or even tax collectors … I
mean chirurgical altered Romulan assassins. Please proceed
to the retinal scan or security will escort you to
infirmary"

"Very well," Rick sighed as he leaned his head toward the
device.

Bren did the same, thinking it simply as a sign of the times
Things were probably going to get worse before they get
better. "How long is the scan valid for, Lieutenant?"

"One hour. This measure is active for one hour, Sir"

"Only one hour?" Bren responded, surprised. "We'll all be
blind by the end of the week if we have to keep doing this
every hour," he muttered under his breath.

====== Shane's office ====

"Commanders, welcome back, please take seats" Shane said
seeing Bren and Rick entering the room. "Anything to
drink?"

"Just water for me, please," Rick said as he took a seat.

"I'll have some coffee, thank you, Commodore," Bren said.
"Black, no sugar, please."

Handing over two cups, Shane returned to his own seat and
said: "Quite interesting reports from both of you … and
well done. The shipyard is here and even a new ship. I take
it that the Detector is in shape to be usable for duty
…"

"There is still section of hull that needs to be complete,"
Rick said. "Once shipyard is operational, should only take a
couple days to finish. Other upgrades, like weapons systems
should only take a couple of weeks. Though in current state,
she be much more valuable as a scout vessel."

Shane nodded and asked: "Pakosii told me that you wanted
to speak with me urgently. Is there anything that isn't
written in the reports?"

Rick looked at Bren before looking back at Shane.

"Two things, sir," Rick said. "First, a device that was
discovered on Detector. It a very powerful technology
inhibitor, capable of affecting an entire star system. At
least in theory. Though it never properly tested. Still, I
believe it has considerable potential."

Rick handed Shane a PADD with everything he had been able to
research on the device.

Shane took the PADD and gave it a brief look. He was no
Engineer, but his knowledge from old good tactician times
helped him to get at least a vague idea of the device's
potential. "Damn" he said, "this doesn't look good.
What's the origin of the device?" he asked.

"The man who created the inhibitor, along with various other
projects and technological enhancements during span of 40
years, is a civilian engineer/scientist named Trevor
Wright," Rick said.

"His work is well known inside R&D," Bren commented. "He is
somewhat of a legend, in a way."

Shane shrugged his shoulders: "I have never heard about
him" he said.

"He kept a pretty low profile," Rick said. "Its believed he
died 20 years ago, but he still alive and was living under
guise of Jameson commanding officer."

"What?" Shane asked. "Under guise? Where is he now?
How could this happen?"

"He currently under house arrest and being detained in his
.. Captain Richard's quarters on Jameson," Rick said.

"I wasn't aware of any of this until Commander Rodgers
mentioned it to me when they returned to the station," Bren
said, taking a sip from his cup. "I have to say, putting
aside Wright's identity, theft he could be a very valuable
asset to us, especially at this time."

Shane remained silent for a while. He considered the
situation and cursed his rank. {Why it's me who has to
deal with things like that?} He knew the answer. It was him
who wanted a higher position … a position of power. But
power takes a great deal of responsibility with itself and
like love and marriage … you cannot have one without the
other.

"I need to speak to this Mr. Wright.". Shane pressed a
button on his console and contacted his aide. "Lieutenant,
please ask the CO of USS Jameson to report to me
immediately. The Captain will need an escort … please take
care of it"

+TAPS+ of course, Sir. +

[USS Chimera] SD: 240903.10 Joint Log Part II, Cmdr. Rangi Summers/Amb. Alecto Ayanami‏

----------------
Begin Part Two
----------------

"I've told you that I will do all I can to help." she said.
"We have an interest in finding a cure just as much as you
do." she added. " I need the Commodores authority of course
and as soon as I have word from the Nightingale, I will
speak to him at the first opportunity."

"Naturally, Commander but do remind the Commodore that while
he sits pondering good, honest, decent people are dying. Not
people who chose Alliance values over Federation values. The
people on Charos VI are simply looking for decent work so
they can feed and clothe their families." Alecto said as she
stood and turned to leave.

Rangi remained sitting as she was, forearms resting on her
desk, the padd in her hands.
"I assure you Ambassador," she said rather coldly, " ....the
welfare of innocent people is never far from his mind."

"I'll assume that's been the reason why my office has not
received a single call inquiri! ng if any humanitarian aid was
required following the mass evacuation prior to the
fall of the Rios System."

"For that matter not even good wishes or sympathies have been
extended to the Alliance since the battle of Aeren III, nor
despite a number of attempts has an answer been provided as
to a time and date for a joint strategy meeting. So I have to
wonder whether it is the Alliance he objects to or myself. Or
if he simply wishes not to win this war?"
Alecto walked out of the office leaving what was likely to
be chaos in her wake.

Rangi got to her feet, rounded her desk and called
"Ambassador!" in a loud, commanding voice. By the time she
reached the door, Alecto was already some distance away and
still walking. Rangi sprinted after her and caught her by
the arm, causing her to stop and turn.

"Your comments were totally out of line." Rangi said and the
thought briefly skimmed through her mind that she shou! ld ask
Alecto to return to the CMO office but it was obvio! us the
Ambassador had clearly said all she had intended to and
Rangi wasn't inclined to pander to protocol either.

"You seem to be under the impression that the Commodore acts
alone." she said, keeping her voice low and staring Alecto
in the eyes."...and I have to wonder why you come
complaining to me instead of directing your grievances to
him face to face. I have told you that I will do all I can
to help you and I 'will' do so but when it comes to strategy
meetings and the course of the war then you are talking to
wrong person....and insinuating that the Commodore acts on
his personal feelings is, frankly, beneath you."

Her attention flicked to Alecto's clothes, amply spattered
with Klingon blood.
" I can only think that you voiced your thoughts in anger."
she said, softening her tone a little "...but even that is
not an excuse.

"Humans rely on emotions, Hybrids do not. We are not
emotionless machines ! like the Borg but we are not ruled by
our emotions like you humans. We are not like Vulcans
suppressing emotion but we simply don't feel that much in
the way of emotion under normal circumstances and even less
under combat conditions."

"Plus to your former comments. One -
As I already stated I've tried to contact the Commodore on
direct channels to no avail so I'm submitting this data to
the person he's most likely to listen to otherwise. Two - My
comments are not out of line as they are based on
information gathered from a multitude of sources. Three -
I'm well aware that the Commodore has support staff whom from
intelligence data who so far have never challenged any
decisions made by the Commodore."
Alecto replied coldly before walking off.

Rangi watched the retreating figure, her lips compressed in
a thin line of annoyance.  When Alecto disappeared from view,
Rangi turned to retrace her steps well awa! re that the little
confrontation had not gone unnoticed. S! he returned to her
office releasing a long breath as the door closed behind
her and crossed to her desk where the glass of orange juice
stood almost untouched. She picked it up and placed it into
the replicator, pressing the buttons for 'recycle'
acknowledging in her mind, that Alecto had been correct in at
least one thing, Shane would certainly be told of their
meeting.  The fact that the Erassian Ambassador felt slighted
would be only one of his problems.

[USS Chimera] SD: 240903.10 Joint Log Part I, Cmdr. Rangi Summers/Amb. Alecto Ayanami

----------
Start Log
----------

*** CMO Office * Infirmary *  SB Unity ***

Rangi had returned to the infirmary having decided she still
had an hour before leaving for the day. She planned to be
home by lunchtime because 'officially' she was on R&R but it
didn't work out like that. Her time was, in much the same way
as Shane's, taken up by duty first and making the best of
what was left.

She walked to her office, entered and closed the door behind
her and went towards the replicator where she requested
chilled apple juice. The sparkling glass soon appeared and
Rangi took  a sip. It was delicious.

She carried it to her desk, setting it down carefully beside
a pile of padds before taking her seat and scooting the
chair forward.  She planned to read as many reports as
possible in the hour she had allowed herself, so pressed a
button to turn the windows opaque so that nothing would
distract her.

Alecto walked into the Task Force Sickbay deliberately
ignoring the stares.  She still wore her skin-tight adcam
outfit and adcam trench coat which was set to white at the
moment but still admittedly was covered in Klingon blood.
She walked into the Chief Medical Officers Office and
said bluntly "We have a problem."

Rangi looked quickly towards the door as it opened without a
warning chime. She was ready to admonish the intruder but
instead stared at the newcomer and getting to her feet asked
" What's happened?"

"I've received word from our doctors on Charos VI that the
virus has mutated again and the vaccine your people
developed is no longer effective...I did warn you that this
wasn't going to be an easy task."  Alecto said tiredly.

" I meant with you." Rangi replied pointing at Alecto's
dishevelled appearance and dispensing with formal greetings
just as the Ambassador had done. " Please...sit down. Can I
get you something?"

"Orange juice please and what happened to me was not
remarkably explicable to me.  Bloodstains yeah I can explain
away...obviously not mine but the reasons the bloodstains
were caused I can't explain Chisulo can fill you in more on
that.  What I need is for your labs to be able to accept in
a sample of the Charos VI virus to analyse"  Alecto said
without pause.

Rangi eyed Alecto in silence as she crossed to the
replicator. She waited for the juice. "When did you get word
of this?" she asked as the glass materialised.

"En route back from Narendra...so time wise about two hours
ago although they probably would have that information there
about a day or two before I did."  Alecto stopped as she
sipped from the proffered glass.

"To be fair this has been the longest period that the virus
has taken to mutate.  We've been lucky up till now." Alecto
said blandly

 Rangi returned to her seat.
"There will probably be a preliminary report here." she said
reaching for the stack of padds. " The Nightingale replaced
McCoy as the hospital ship in attendance." She began to skim
through them. " What else did they say?" she asked glancing
to Alecto.

"I don't have much except the symptoms have gone from just
like e-bola virus to including the symptoms of hemmoragic
fever as well."  Alecto said grimly.

This was bad news indeed. A treatment had been 'relatively'
easy to find following a similar illness suffered by Romulan
refugees. The antidote had proved suitable and the tide had
turned in the devastation that the virus had caused. ...but
mutations threw everything into a different light.

"I hate to point this out but this isn't the first time this
has happened.  The Alliance has found several 'cures' so far
none of which have been permanent.  I hope you understand
now that the disdain which you in the Federation look down
upon the Alliance isn't really justified."  Alecto said
measuring the response of the person across from her.

Rangi looked across her desk at the Ambassador.
"With respect..." she began quietly "..I think you are
mistaken.  Medical personnel seek to help the sick and
finding a 'cure' as you succinctly put it, is not a simple
procedure particularly when mutations come into it. So
frustration certainly but disdain, no." She held the
Ambassador's gaze for a moment longer then looked back
at the padds in her hand.

"Perhaps you may want to pass that on to your subordinates
and also mention that it's a dumb idea to send unencrypted
messages inside Alliance Space criticising our less
developed medical abilities.  Whilst we may not be as
advanced as you, we are not 'primitive and inferior'."
Alecto said with irritation as she handed over a padd
with details of intercepted transmissions.

"You may want to mention to Lieutenant Commander Hiroshi
that it was the Erassian Alliance who helped save this
Starbase whilst your preferred allies hid and did nothing."

Rangi looked at the padd Alecto held out and after a moment
reached to take it.
She did not doubt the Ambassadors word exactly yet if the
messages were indeed all that Alecto said then Rangi would
be far from pleased.
She decided to read it when her visitor had left and laid it
to one side.

Chimerans!
I hope you are enjoying your R&R. I know I am, and will be in RL next week as I cruise the eastern carribean with my honey on my honeymoon. As such, i believe my internet connection will be rather spotty that week. Therefore I am going to prolong R&R for one more week, with the next Chimera plot starting the week after. I will see if I can get some Taskforce people to get the background rolling for the next mission, however.
I'm sorry to announce that Lileutenant JG Michael Howard is being dropped this week due to lack of logging and participation. Mike, you will have to reapply. Terek is also being put on report for two consecutive weeks without an excuse. Terek, please get in touch with command and let us know what's up. We'd hate to loose you again.

Greetings everyone,

Now that the Chimera is finally on R&R, everyone is taking some time to get out some personal logs, which is fantastic. Some interesting developments were seen with Gustav being passed over for a promotion and I'm sure many of us wonder what kind of repercussions the events at Narendra will hold in store.

Congratulations to everyone on their well-deserved awards.

Have a good week!

Crew entertainment?.................

She released, and Rojac rolled onto his hands and knees and
started laughing. She did too.
"I think you'll have to do the teaching, Lieutenant."
He said between breaths.
She smiled, and bent over to help her superior officer up.
"I can do that. I taught a class when I was aboard the
Magellan, perhaps I can start one here and you can
attend."
"What, and get my ass beat in front of my crew every other
day?" He laughed. "I don't think so, Lieutenant."

Old habits die hard?............................

There were a lot of things that happened and none of them
was good. Explosions and murders, problems at the promenade,
disturbing reports from the Chim and Qashqai and even an
Admiral on Shane's tail … all that was almost too much
for the ex-TAC officer.
{Maybe I should just shoot and ask later?} he thought.

Someone is hungry.................

"There's no menu here Love just order what you want and
they make it" Gustav explained.
Gustav's words let her know that the waiter had arrived and
was waiting. She looked around for the menu and then his
words sank in and slowly she started with, "French onion
soup, umm... Teriyaki chicken with grilled pineapple rings,
a loaded baked potato and broccoli salad. Oh... and a peach
margarita?"
Gustav chuckled at Mimi's choice, he had never quite
appreciated her eclectic taste in food until now.
"Excuse me ... do you need to know about desserts now... or
is later fine," she questioned shyly as a blush crept up her
cheeks with the knowledge that she was indulging in all her
favourites.

Logging:
The weekly logging deadline is at Midnight (12:00AM/00:00) GMT/UTC (19:00 EST); all logs received after the deadline will be counted for the following week. If you are pressed for time and would like a log to count for the previous week, but it is sent after the deadline, please send an email to the command team when you send the log so that we can make the corrections.
Please remember that all MAJOR plot changes need to be cleared with the command staff before a log goes through! You can do this by sending the command staff (chimera-command@ucip.org ) a log labeled with "Draft" tagged to the subject line. We'll typically let you know if it's approved within 24 to 48 hours, or tell you what might need to be modified before it's sent to the listserv.
When using other characters in your logs, please keep in mind that person's characteristics. Character information can be found on the UCIP website or the USS Chimera website (under CREW - just click on the Star Trek symbol next to the character's name). If you're still unsure how to interact with a character, then privately mail the person
involved, and I'm sure they'll be willing to help.
Conversely, if you feel that your character is being portrayed incorrectly by someone please contact them to try to work out an agreeable solution. Just keep in mind when logging to treat other characters the way you'd like them to treat you - with the respect due to any member of Starfleet who is a specialist in their field.
If you think your log may be going out of bounds, then please ask! If you are having problems finding things to write about or would just like some help with your log, please contact your department head or the command team. Remember, you don't always have to log about things relating to the main plot - logs that develop your character's
personality are encouraged! We're eager to help if you're having trouble; just email the command team (

-------------------------
- On Report
-------------------------
Any officer who is Absent Without Leave (0) for two or more consecutive
weeks is considered "On Report." Crewmen on report should email the command staff immediately to explain their absence (too much to do in RL is a fine excuse) and say when they anticipate being able to log again in the future.
The following crewmen are on report:

Commander Terek Weranis
-------------------------
- Removals/Resignations
-------------------------
The following crew have either resigned or have been dropped due to lack of activity. If they would like a position on the USS Chimera, they will need to reapply.

Crewman Theodosia, LtJG Michael Howard
