[USS Chimera] Sd240908.01 Personal Log. Scott fisher / Mercedes Carpenter

By the time Scott had packed his bags and arranged with a
yoeman to clear the rest of his belongings from his AMO
quarters, the new position as Chimeras CMO had been put in
place. He found no problem in boarding the ship for security
expected him. He was on their list and he the routine checks
went without pause.

He trudged along to the CMOs quarters feeling as though he
was stepping back in time for how often had he boarded
Chimera in the past and walked this very same corridor. He
arrived at the designated quarters to find a crewman
changing the name plate on the door.
" Lieutenant Fisher? " he asked and when Scott said yes
that was he, the crewman handed him a padd. " Your security
codes sir," he said "...to get inside..."

He stood to one side and Scott tapped in the unfamiliar
code and stepped inside his new home. He glanced around the
place so recently occupied by Rice and dumping his bags near
the door, crossed straight to the terminal on the opposite
wall and put through a message to Merecedes Carpenter,
hoping that she would be available to answer in person.

Mercedes had just returned from the lab having finished her
report on the study of the captive alien in the secure
medical facility. It was officially the last thing she had
to do for her assignment to Unity, and until she got further
word of what to do from her superiors, she was on holiday
until further notice.

She was looking forward to the dinner with Scott and it had
been milling through her mind all day. There was kind of
excitement in the air that she just couldn't keep down, and
she wondered what the evening might hold in store. She was
just about to undress and take a shower when she heard the
beeping from the comm terminal.
Sitting down at the desk, she flipped it open and was
surprised to see it was a call from Scott.

"Scott," she greeted him with a friendly smile. "I didn't
expect to hear from you until later.

He smiled back though not perhaps as warmly as she could
have expected. " I..I'm sorry. " he said, coming straight to
the point "..theres a change of plan. I cant make it to
dinner."

Mercedes frowned and wondered whether something serious had
forced the change of plan... or if perhaps he'd had a change
of heart. "Did something come up?" she asked. "We can
reschedule, if you want?"

" I can't reschedule. " he said . " I've been reasigned as
of a couple of hours ago...I'm no longer on the base."

"Reassigned? May I ask to where?"

He sighed. " Chimera. " he said. " I'm back on chimera but
as CMO."

"Congratulations," she said with a mixture of surprise and
praise. "I didn't know you had applied."

" I hadn't." he replied simply and looked for a moment as
though he was thoroughly regretting the new position. He
glanced down at his wrist chrono, gauging how much time
there was before Chimera would set out on her mission.
" Look.." he said turning back to Mercedes. "...I know there
isnt much time...and it wont be like having dinner or
anything..but we could still meet up if you want. There's a
small place in the departure lounge...we could meet there."
he looked at her hopefully.

Mercedes nodded. "Of course, I can meet you there in 5
minutes."

" Done." he said and grinned at Mercedes excited expression.
The screen reverted to the usual logo but scott was already
half way to the door, grabbing his jacket and almost falling
over the crewman outside the door who had only just
completed his work. Scott retraced his steps, walking fast
and sometimes breaking into a jog. The security guard
cleared his departure off ship but looked a bit surprised
that he was leaving so soon though Scott took no notice and
arrived in the departure lounge, scanning the crowd for sign
of her.

A few minutes later Mercedes arrived at the small cafe in
the departure lounge to find Scott inside. He didn't look
very pleased but seem to brighten a little when he saw her
approached. "Hi," she greeted him and took a seat. "Is
everything all right? You don't seem very pleased about the
new assignment..."

" I...it's...ah never mind." He shook his head and smiled. "
It's fine." He looked across the small table and into her
eyes which seemed to him more lovely then before. " I'm
sorry. " he said. " I'm sorry about dinner and
about...everything."

"Sorry about what?" she asked, not sure what he was talking
about. But when he said 'everything', she thought back to
her conversation with Sally and the depressing picture of
Scott she'd painted after Mercedes had left.
"If anyone should apologise for 'everything', it should be
me. I'm the one who left. And now... you have a chance at
being Chimera's CMO. You've wanted it for so long, and
you'll be much better at it then I ever was."

" I was going to tell you about that." he said. " I've got
another job...its on hold and has been since starfleet crews
were recalled. Its the medical officer of the civilian
hospital on Aeran 3. I wanted a change you see." He broke
off and looked at her in silence as the sounds and sights of
activity swept around them. " When you came to my office
yesterday...I'd hoped that we could get our friendship back
on track. Seems its not going to work like that."

Mercedes sighed, not knowing what to say. She looked down at
her hands and then back at Scott. "I have to admit, I'd
hoped the same. But this is the reality of what we do. It's
hard to... keep people in the same place."

He nodded, knowing it was true and that there were two of
many who faced the same sort of situation. "Well...we can
arrange a dinner for when i get back." he said "...assuming
you'll still be here..and I hope you will be."

"That would be lovely," she smiled. "I have a lot of
waiting to do now... it's up to my superiors to decide if
they want me to stay on after they've reviewed my research,
which would take at least a month."

"Well if we come back in that time we could take a trip to
the planet? We could spend a...."
A steady high pitched bleeping soujnded shrilly and Scott,
frowning, looked down at his wrist where his chrono alarm
was sojnding. He switched it off.
" I'm sorry...I have to get back. " He stood up and when she
did too he reached for her hand and gently raised it to his
lips.

Mercedes smiled sweetly at the old fashioned gesture. Scott
was ever the gentleman. She squeezed his hand tightly. "I'll
see you when you get back. I hope you have a safe mission."

" Thankyou...and we'll have dinner then at least ok?" He
smiled to her and gently let go of her hand then turned and
walked away cursing the ill timing of the whole situation.

"All right," she said and watched him as he left. As he
walked away, she didn't want him to leave and almost had to
resist the urge to walk after him. There was a chance she
could make up for what happened between them, but now it
seemed farther and farther away. Unless she took her fate in
her own hands for a change.

OOC: Takes after Bren is released from the Brig, after a JL with Anya
Xerxes (which will follow shortly), but before Rangi sees Jacobs about
returning to duty.

*** Guzman / Summers Quarters * SB Unity ***

The door chime sounded and Rangi smiled to herself as she walked
towards the door, carrying a small lunchbox in her hand.

" Here it is." she said opening the door and holding up the box " You
almost forgot your lun....oh...hello." She lowered her hand to her
side. " I'm sorry...I thought you were Martin and Laura come back for
their lunchbox. Please...come in." She stood aside, making way.

Bren stepped inside the quarters and smiled. It was good to see Rangi
again and he was relieved she was all right. Considering what she'd
been through, she looked remarkably well.

"It's good to see," he said, leaning forward to give her a hug. "How
do you feel?"

" I'm alright." she replied having returned the hug and indicated that
they enter the main room. " But whats this?" she asked pointing to
Brens blackened eye. " You've had an accident?"

"I had a small disagreement with a few of Unity's pilots," he
answered, feeling slightly embarassed. "I haven't been myself much the
last few weeks, to be honest."

She followed him into the room, setting the little lunchbox with its
colourful design, onto the table in the hall as she passed it.

" You were in a fight?" she asked and smiled when he looked at her
rather sheepishly. " Please, take a seat. May I get you something to
drink?"

"Black coffee, please," he said as he sat down on the sofa, avoiding
the mention of the fight or the fact that he had spent the night in a
holding cell. "I could really use it
right now."

" Replicated alright?" she asked and when he said he didn't mind it,
she busied herself in getting his choice.

She returned to him and handed the cup sitting down on the sofa next
to him and wondering how best to broach the subject that had obviously
brought him here.

He glanced around the room and saw Martin's toys and the lunch box
left behind. "How is Martin doing... after everything?"

" Very well thankyou for asking." she replied. " He's a remarkable
child. " She gave a short laugh. " I suppose all parents say that
about their children dont they?" she asked
but added: " ..but he really is. I expected some sort of..I dont
know..upset about whats happened. He was quiet on the journey home
because he wanted Shane to come with us but once he arrived here he
seemed to drop straight back into the routine, almost as though
nothing had happened at all."

"That's good to hear," Bren replied with a smile. "Children are
resilient... they can bounce back quickly from trauma. Adults, on the
other hand, seem to take much longer." He took a sip from the hot
coffee cup and noticed his hand was trembling slightly. Putting it
down, he finally decided to ask what he'd come here for.
"Rangi, I need to ask you, about Liev... what happened? I received a request to
see Rodgers about it, but if it's... if he's dead, I would rather hear
it from a friend."

{He doesnt know} Rangi thought and was lost for words for she had expected
that someone would have told him. She reached out and laid a hand on his arm.
"I'm sorry." she said quietly, almost in a whisper and saw the moment
that he acknowledged in himself what he had feared for so long.

"I'm sorry to put you in this situation," he said. Emotions were close
to surface now and he had to swallow very hard against the lump in his
throat.

" I spent some time with him." she said "...and when you want to or if
you do, then we can talk about it."

Bren let out a deep breath he'd been holding and took another sip of
the coffee. He felt strangely relieved in a way, now finally knowing
the truth. "It's what I expected, but when you don't know for sure...
thank you, I appreciate it. I'd like to talk about it, but I
think I need to just take a short while to digest everything."

"Ofcourse. " Rangi replied. " It's always the not knowing that's the
worst." She gave him a faint smile and withdrew her hand. " I'm
removed from duty." she said, changing the subject.

"Why?" Bren asked quickly, not thinking it through, then added, "I
suppose it makes sense, given what you've been through. How do you
feel about it?"

She shrugged. "It was the right decision. I knew it if i was honest
with myself but..well..Ive done nothing for a few days and I feel
rested and ready to take up the reins again."

Bren nodded. "Well, we've been issued new orders. The 1st Task Force
is planning an incursion into Quorum space and I've been ordered to
Padassa. I know that you've just been through an awful ordeal and I
wouldn't ask this if it weren't very important, but... I need you to
come with me. What you saw and experienced there is invaluable, and
I'll need your expertise. The Commodore will also be there. If you
want, I can talk with Jacobs... although, to be honest, I've been
avoiding him."

Rangi had not expected it and her expression showed her surprise.
After a moment or two she said: " I'll come with you of course if you
think I can help. As for our counsellor...he said told me to tell him
when I thought I would be ready to return to duty. I'll go to see
him tomorrow." She smiled. " He's a strange character isn't he? I'm
never sure what to expect from him."

"Yes," Bren replied, frowning slightly as he thought about Jacobs.
"Can't quite seem to figure him out."

Rangi nodded agreement. " The thing is...somehow I quite like him."
They smiled at each other and rangi thought how tired bren looked, it
was the worry of course, the not knowing. Finishing the last of his
coffee, Bren set the mug down on
the table in front of him. "Thank you for the coffee... and for the
talk. I should get going. I suspect we'll be leaving on the Quasar in
a day or two and I have a number of things I need to sort out before
then. Please tell Martin I say hello."

" I will." she replied. They stood up and walked together back towards
the door. "Take care of yourself wont you?" she asked.

Bren nodded as he stood inside the door frame. "Don't worry about me,
I will. See you soon."

"Yes indeed." she replied and watched him walk off along the corridor
a slightly hunched figure as though he was beaten down by what life
had dealt him. She sighed, went in and closed the door.

[USS Chimera] SD 240908.02 | Padassa | Joint Log, RAdm Guzman & Adm Janeway

[ Padassa Station ]

After her talk with General Sharpe, Admiral Janeway had one more name on her list to get to before she could call it a day. This one was a little more difficult to reach,  and while she had been talking with Sharpe, her assistant had been working on establishing a secure connection to the Padassa Station. Finally the spinning logo disappeared, replaced by Commodore Guzman's face.

Shane was already tired. He has been hardly more then a day on Padassa and he already learned to hate Klingon ways. Klingon were warriors and as such they had regard only for battle, good battle and glorious battle. And tales … and blood wine … and opera. He was a Commodore, but did not love fight or war and if fight was the motto of the day, Shane's preference was tactical position, not the front line fighter. This earned him a slight disrespect by the Klingon crews on Padassa, since he refused to take a part on some warrior competition to "show how Starfleet tough really is".

It was a welcome change when there was no Klingon in front of him … or on the other end of screen. When the call from JDC CO was announced, Shane was glad to see Janeway's face.

"Admiral" he greeted Janeway once the connection was established. "what can I do for you?" he asked politely.

"Commodore," she greeted him in return. "I hope I'm not interrupting you on important business?"

"You're not, Admiral. In fact I am thankful that I do not have to watch more Klingon warrior competitions and listen to their operas. One would say that being so deep in Romulan space would make them careful, but they all seem to enjoy the prospect of glorious battles ahead. But I suppose you did not contact me because of Klingon operas …"

"B'Elanna informed me she's managed to persuade the High Council to send a representative to Padassa, a Commander Kortag'h if I'm not misaken," Janeway said. "I believe you should be able to get along with him. If what Ambassador Torres tells me is true, he's one of the more level-headed Klingons she's had the pleasure of meeting. And I'm sure that's saying quite a lot."

Nodding, Shane said: "It would be great to have someone with let's say … more responsible thinking here. The Captains of those four Klingon ships are not exactly what I call strategists. Give them a target and they are happy like a Ferengi with a bar of lantinum, but I think we need more then bare firepower here. Not to mention that we expect Erassian forces to arrive here shortly as well."

"The Erassian forces seem to be a little stretched thin at the moment," Janeway replied, tapping a finger on her desk. "Their attention is focused on the Rios system. From what I understand only one or two of their agents were held captive on Padassa, and they don't consider the system of much importance to themselves. But, they
are likely to send at least a small military unit; its commander will probably take over the role of representative, if need be."

Shane nodded: "Not that I miss Erassians much, but I have to admit that their military presence would enhance our combat abilities greatly. Their heavy weapons are quite handy for mass combat. But still, even a small force is better then nothing" After a short pause he added: "As I understand this, we bulk of ground combat will be on our shoulder."

"I just spoke with your new MEF Commander," the grey-haired Admiral said. "And I had the pleasure of promoting him to Major General. It seems he's hit the ground running. If anyone can whip the marines into shape, it's him."

"I hope so" Shane replied. "I talked with Sharpe earlier as well, but cant make an impression from a single conversation. Nonetheless, I hope he's that good cause it
will be his task to drive the Romulans away from all nearby installations" Shane's face went a bit sour when he said: "Major General is a great honour, so I have to congratulate him when he arrives"

Janeway smiled. "It won't do to have him outrank you, Shane. Therefore
I'm promoting you to Rear Admiral with immediate effect. Your position
as Task Force leader has been invaluable over the last years, especially during the war. You've managed to hold the front against the Romulans, something which is not an easy task. This is well deserved on your part and quite overdue, if you ask me. Your father might not be so pleased about it, but I hope that you are."
Shane's face went less sour immediately. He would not show it openly, but he long hoped for a promotion ... and now the day came. "Thank you, Admiral. I can only say that I am most honoured" He grinned: "You know that the great Ambassador John Guzman is top of Federation diplomats, but Rear Admiral comes close"

"You deserve it, Shane," Janeway said simply.

With concern in his eyes Shane asked: "Hmm … I hope my promotion isn't connected with relocation, you know me, Bragg or even Earth is not of much attraction to me ..." he left the sentence unfinished as he knew if Janeway would
want to reassign him, he could do next to nothing about it.

Janeway laughed lightly. "No strings attached, I promise. Besides, we need you on the front lines."

With the slightest of relief on his face, Shane answered: "Thank you again. If you should have someday a trip near Aeran system, please don't forget to drop by, I am sure you will like UNITY"

"I might just do that, Admiral Guzman," she replied. "Janeway out."

Start Log

Anya walked slowly along the Promenade with Commander Bren Ohmsford
shortly after forcing through his release from the Task Force
Detention Cells. "I assume at some point you're going to ask me why I
went and got you released from the holding cell Commander and why
exactly I called you a tool which I required for my assigned mission."

Bren tried not to walk too fast seeing as every step he took felt like
someone was hitting him against the head. "I try not to ask too many
questions when something is authorised by Admiral Janeway," he
replied. "And especially in my current condition I'd prefer not to ask
any at all. But, seeing as you went through all the trouble to get me
out from under Lieutenant Mumacik's clutches - of which I am really
grateful - I am assuming it's urgent?"

"Urgent may not be the exact word. I have at least a month to get the
equipment I need into place and for that I'm thankful. Whilst I can't
reveal the exact specifics of the mission I can only stress this is of
the highest priority. The Federation and the Alliance to boot have
enemies out there preparing to strike against them, whist the majority
of these organizations are unaware of the threat posed it is still
important these threats be dealt with. What I require will not be
easy or quick to produce I only ask that it be ready as soon as
possible, I need two types of warhead to fit in the newly designed
Anti-Ship Missile created by various Chimera departments. We already
have standard Quantumn and Verteron Warheads but what we need are more
strategically advanced warheads that the enemy cannot defend against.
Firstly I want a Transphasic Warhead with a large yield created and
secondly I would like for immediate research into the creation of a
Tech-Ex Warhead." Anya stated although when she was talking about
this sinister lurking enemy she couldn't tell whether she was talking
about the traitor Colonel Vernier or the Karaf.

Bren nodded. He was aware of the Anti-Ship Missile and the proposed
cooperation between the Federation and Alliance to increase
Starfleet's weapon efficiency. "You're in luck, Major. I've already
authorised the delivery of six transphasic warheads for the Chimera.
I'm not sure whether their yield will be high enough, but I'm sure we
can increase that depending on your requirements. As for Tech-Ex, I'm
not sure I'm familiar with it, but I've been a little out of the loop
recently with weapons development. What exactly does it entail?"

"Firstly we'll need a lot more warheads and the higher the yield the
better. Honestly I'm not entirely sure exactly how Tech-Ex technology
works but from what little I was able to read it works like an EMP
does on old technology. I only managed to read so much before it was
reclassified above my clearance level. There was one name though on
that report who had knowledge of how the recovered device worked...one
of your employees as it happens, Commander Rick Rodgers." Anya said
monitoring Bren's responses to check if he was lying.

"Ah, you're talking about the technology recovered on the USS Detector,"
Bren replied as he caught on with what she was talking about. "You
know, Major, if you ever get tired of being an ace pilot, you should
give some though to joining R&D. Though I suspect sitting behind a
desk drawing up plans is not something that would keep you fulfilled."

"Funny intelligence once made the same offer. Somehow I doubt my skills
are that transposable. I am what I'm required to be and for now that's
a combat pilot and a little bit extra. I would like either yourself or
someone at one of the secure labs to do a small scale test on a biological
ship like those of Species 8472 or in theory any advanced craft the Breen
may come up with." Anya replied.

"I'll put in a request for more transphasic warheads," Bren said. "And
look into this technology you mentioned. On a serious note, give some
thought to my suggestion about R&D... at least on an associative
basis, then you wouldn't have to leave your commission. You've worked
with them before. They might just be interested in having an official
Erassian liaison, and it would give you access to the information on
Tech-Ex."

"I'll give it some thought but I can't promise any priorities just
yet. As the good Ambassador says 'Fate is inexorable'. If you'll
excuse me I have some further items to attend to." Anya said before
giving a nod and heading back to Chimera.

OOC: Takes place after Bren and Gustav's little brawl at the Wrench Bench.

[ Starbase Unity - Brig Detention Cells ]

Bren woke up facing the bare grey wall on the inside of one of the detention cells. His first thoughts were that he could swear his bedroom wall was a different colour, then slowly the memory of where he was returned along with a throbbing headache in the dull pain in his left eye socket.

Gustav had woken up about ½ an hour before Commander Ohmsford had awoke, he noticed the Cmdr stirring while he held his head in his hands thinking to himself {I'm never drinking again}.

Sitting up, Bren looked towards the other side of the cell at Lieutenant Kroitzer, separated from him by a force field. "How long have we been here?" he asked.

"Four and a half hour, Commander Ohmsford" Mumacik replied. It was thank to internal sensors that announced that Bren was recovering from his 'status'. It was not far from Mumacik's office, so he was just there when both men awoke.

Bren looked up in surprise at the lieutenant who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. It was only when seeing Mumacik's emotionless face, so etched into his memory during his years of service on the Archer, that he remembers being notified of the lieutenant's appointment to Chief of Fleet Level Security.

"Lieutenant, I didn't see you there," Bren said. He tried to get up but as soon as he attempted to lift himself off his bunk the room started spinning, so he gently sat  himself down again.

Still holding his head and looking out the side of his eye at the lieutenant, Gustav asked "What are we doing here, and how did we get here?"

"Reports about your activity are a bit unclear" Mumacik said. "I have now six officers arrested by promenade security and a short report about a bar brawl. Since a member of Task Force Command staff was involved in this accident, the jurisdiction for this case was transferred to me. Maybe you could please explain your activities, "Commander, Lieutenant?"

Bren glanced at Gustav and then back at Mumacik. Seeing as he was the senior officer present, he decided to take it upon himself to properly explain the situation. "Well, you see... the young lieutenant and I were enjoying a drink at the Wrench Bench when a group of Unity's pilots decided to harass us. Naturally things got out of hand and we simply defended ourselves. I'm not sure if they recognized me as a Task Force staff member... as you can see I'm not wearing my uniform."

Still trying to remember what had happened Gustav had sudden visions of his head meeting someone's nose but decided to stay quite, not because he had anything to hide but because his head hurt too much when he spoke.

Mumacik looked at both officers and replied to Ohmsford:  "Commander, in case of someone attacking you within the areas of Starbase 234: UNITY you were supposed to call UNITY's security. You are of course allowed to defend yourself, but still you were supposed to call the security. From what I have in my report, UNITY's security was called by a passing Vulcan male, not you or Lieutenant Kroitzer"

Deciding to speak up even know that it would hurt Gustav replied "I don't think we had time to call security".

Anya walked into the detention area in one hell of a bad mood.  The trip from Trill had been long and her headache was still pounding despite the numerous legal medications she tried.  Self righteous deities could prove to be a real pain in the ass or in this case pain in the head.  She announced herself loudly. "My name is Major Anya Xerxes. I'm here to the person in charge of this department regarding the release of detained personnel.  Captain Rojac is busy and Commander Trez...Chimera's XO is on Earth which if you check your star charts is quite some light years from here."

A marine sergeant walked over to Anya and said: "Ma'am, please follow me. You are seeking Lieutenant Mumacik, who is in charge of Fleet level security." Entering the cell block, the Sergeant announced: "Lieutenant Mumacik, this is Major Xerxes from Chimera. She is here to take care of Chimera's arrested guys"

Mumacik turned and faced the marine Major. "I am Lieutenant Mumacik, Major Xerxes. According to SSF wartime regulations, only a ship's CO or XO can request taking custody of their own crew members. As far I know, you are none of the two, unless there has been a command position change on the USS Chimera that I don't know about."

"Changes come so thick and fast these days so I may need to check on that but to the best of my knowledge it hasn't happened yet.  Besides as I told the sergeant here the Captain is busy, strangely enough with helping plan an offensive to persecute our enemies rather than our own troops.  The XO is light years from here on Earth so may be slightly disinclined to come to bail out a hammered junior officer." Anya replied evenly.

Nodding, Mumacik replied: "Please present a formal letter of authority delegation from Captain Cropa Rojac."

Anya handed over the first of her padds "Here is the formal request for Lieutenant Kroitzer's release.  Whilst I do not have the same document from Commodore Guzman or Captain Rodgers I do have this…" Anya handed over the second padd.  "…which is a requisition order allowing me to requisition any materials or tools I feel necessary for the completion of an assigned mission…the authorizations at the bottom are those of Admiral Kathryn Janeway and General Kira Nerys the second of which being directly at the top of the chain of command.  Plus before you ask the tool
in question is Commander Ohmsford."

Bren didn't know whether he should be flattered or insulted at being called a tool, but either way if it got him out of this brig cell he wasn't going to complain. He couldn't afford to be stuck there for hours on end while he waited for Captain Rodgers to make an appearance, and he had neither the inclination nor the desire in his current, head-aching state to make a plea for his release himself.

Mumacik inspected the first PADD briefly. Then he pushed a few buttons. He connected the PADD with UNITY's main computer who requested a confirmation from Chimera's Computer. All that was done within a second and the result was positive. Handing the PADD back to Xerxes, Mumacik inspected the other PADD with far more care. The encrypted signature seemed to be all right as well as the SSF encoding. He looked up at Xerxes and said: "Thank you for the documents Major Xerxes. I am transferring Lieutenant Gustav Kroitzer into the custody of Major Anya Xerxes from USS Chimera as of this star date. Please remember that Captain Cropa Rojac is required to report about his legal decision in this case to SB 234: UNITY's JAG department by SSF Wartime regulations. Since he still did not submit his legal decision in the case of Marine Captain Channer Davis, I will forward this issue to the office of 1st Task Force Commander."

On Mumacik's face was no emotion visible when he looked at Gustav, but who knows what went through the head of the security officer when releasing a prisoner?
Gustav stood up and exited the cell and then stood wearily behind Anya hoping the pain in his head would stop.

"The case of Commander Ohmsford is a bit complicated, " Mumacik said with an emotionless face like always, "since I have no possibility to verify the orders from Admiral Kathryn Janeway and General Kira Nerys. There are two possible ways now, Major Xerxes. You can wait till Joint Defense Command confirms those orders, or sign a warrant that you take full responsibility for Commander Ohmsford as well as full responsibility in case your orders will not be confirmed." Not giving Anya time to reply, Mumacik went on: "Commander Ohmsford will be required to sign a warrant of agreement with this actions as well" he remained quiet expecting Major's decision.

"Nothing ventured nothing gained.  I'll sign the warrants Leftenant."  Anya said quickly.  She may not have been sure about the real foundation of her standing but nothing was achieved by hesitating.

Nodding, Mumacik said: "Very well then, Major Xerxes." He produced all three PADDs with high speed and he handed two to Anya. "Please sign both warrants, Major Xerxes"

Anya quickly scanned over the two padds.  She wasn't stupid enough to sign anything without reading it first.  When she was satisfied she signed the two padds.

Mumacik gave a nod to the marine standing next to the force field command console and he lowered them on both cells. Gustav was free to go immediately, Commander Ohmsford was required to do his portion of warrants signing.

Grateful that he didn't have to sit in the cell any longer, Bren got a bit unsteadily to his feet and walked over to the lieutenant, taking the padd and signing it. "Thank you, Lieutenant," he said to Mumacik. "Hopefully I won't have to see you again soon."

[USS Chimera] SD240908.01 Duty Log - Lt Acting COps Ian Vaughn - "Reporting for Duty"

[Deck 1, Bridge - USS Chimera - C]

Ian stepped off the turbolift Ian headed straight for the operations console to relieve the officer on duty taking the PADD from him that held the shifts diagnostic reports and any other information that the new shift officer would need. This one had a message Jade saying that she was going to be on medical leave on UNITY and unable to be apart of the new mission. There was also the report from the Quartermaster for the new materials and equipment for the stealth platings.

After reading through all the reports and diagnostics he plugged the PADD back in so that everything that Ian did would be recorded on the PADD for the next officer to look through. Checking on a few things mainly dealing with the sensors he wanted to make sure they were all working after the last mission even though everything was checked first it never hurt to double check it. Deciding to run a level 3 diagnostic seeing that would also give him some time to check in with the ODCC and get some other things done.

"Vargas this Vaughn how is things down in ODCC?" Vaughn asked the operations yeoman.

"Um good Lt we're finishing up some of the level 1 and 2 diagnostics on the targeting systems and shields." Vargas said reading over one of the latest reports, "do you want me to send you them?" Vargas asked seeing that he was the acting chief.

"Nah I'll look them over when I get off duty just make sure the adjustments get made." Vaughn said as he continued to look through the different systems double checking things before they departed for the mission.

"Alright I'll keep you posted if anything changes." Vargas said closing the COMM link and going back to organizing the reports.

With everything looking in order Ian decided to run a level 5 diagnostic on all systems just to be through and not wanting to deal with any major problems while starting there mission. After the level 3 diagnostic was done he went through it and made some notes for some minor adjustments that he well have the enlisted crew deal with.

" Hey...I didnt know you were working here today." Scott
said as he saw Rangi approaching.

" I'm not really." she replied, " I was waylaid when I came
in by a minor emergency. Actually I had come to see
you.....do you have a minute?"

" Certainly..." he replied " You're office or mine?"

" Mine's nearer." she replied and he fell into step beside
her.

" You look a bit worried. " he said. " Is there something
wrong?"

" No not exactly. " she said and he didnt ask more realizing
that whatever it was needed the privacy of her office.

She led the way in, asked him to take a seat and followed
him across the room to her own chair where she sat and
immediately pressed the button on her desk that clouded the
windows, a sure indication to those outside that she was not
to be disturbed.

" What's up?" Scott asked, watching her face.

She leaned forward resting her forearms on the desk top and
linking her fingers together.

" You know that Chimera will be leaving in a matter of
hours?" she said and he nodded.
" Alex Rice came to see me a short time ago to ask for
compassionate leave of absence."

Scott frowned. " I've heard about his children. " he said
quietly. " It's tragic."

" Yes it is. " Rangi agreed. " Obviously he wants to be with
his wife at a time like this and I've given him permission
to leave for home on the next available transport."
She paused.
" That means that Chimera is without a CMO and I'd like you
to take the position."

Scott said nothing, he didnt need to for his expression said
it all.

" I know you dont want this." she continued "..and from
choice you'd be on Aeran running the hospital there by now
but I wouldnt ask if I didnt think you the best man for the
job."

Scott dropped his gaze, his lips compressed.

" There are others I could call on but getting them here
before Chimera leaves is impossible and although Matheson or
possibly Sark could be a choice, they arent as experienced
as you.
Scott, I know you dont want a ships mission and if you feel
strongly about it then I 'will' ask someone else."

He glanced at her for a second then took a deep breath and
released it slumping back a bit on his chair.

He knew that Rice needed to be his family and he knew too
that Sark would be a good choice.
His job as Medical officer in charge of the newly built
hospital on the planet had been on hold for sometime. It was
something that he had wanted to do for it would open other
avenues for him and expand his career which he no longer saw
as being confined to a ship.
More than that though came the thought of Mercedes.

He had been so pleased to see her when she appeared in his
office and he wanted ...'what did he want?' he asked himself
and the answer was already there.
He wanted to resume the relationship they had had and he
believed, perhaps optimistically, that Mercedes wanted it
too.
On the other hand, they hadnt been in touch recently, he had
had no idea she was even on the starbase and she might leave
again just as quickly as she had arrived.

The war had altered everything and personal wishes had to
take a second place so he looked up again to see Rangi
watching him and waiting for his answer.

"Alright." he said. " I'll do it. " He gave her a small
smile which she returned with interest.

" I'll notify Captain Rojac of the change over." she said "
and your promotion to CMO will be set in place.."
She knew he wasnt whole heartedly behind the decision and
hoped that he hadnt felt under pressure to accept it.
" Congratulations." she said holding out her hand.

Scott leaned forward and took it in a firm clasp.

"Thankyou." he said. " We'll celebrate when I get back."

[USS Chimera] SD240908.01 Joint Duty Log - Cmdr/MCapt CMO/COps Rangi Summers and Jade Reese - "Treating a Headache"

[Infirmary, SB UNITY]

Walking into sickbay on UNITY Jade needed was going to have
a post-op appointment to make sure all the radiation was
gone she felt fine expect for every once and awhile she
would get head splitting headaches. While she was waiting in
the waiting room she could feel one coming on deciding that
she needed to see a doctor now before it became worse she
stood up and walked up to the admitting window, "excuse I
really need to see a doctor." Jade said rubbing her temples
trying to slow down the headache.

The nurse eyed her specutively. It had been a long shift for
her and she was rather tired of patients demanding to be
seen immediately.
"If you take your place the doctor will see you as soon as
he's free." she replied sounding rather annoyed.

"Ma'am I'm not trying to be a pain but it feels like my head
is going to split into two." Jade said trying to remain calm
while her head continued to pound. "I really need to see a
doctor because I can barely concentrate to stay standing."
Jade said faintly while she put her hand out to balance
herself on the desk.

The nurse had heard the excuse before and was not inclined
to believe it, particularly as her own head was beginning to
ache, her shift had officially ended eight minutes ago and
there was no sign of her relief and all she wanted to do was
return to her room and sleep for a week.
She frowned at Jade and was about to repeat her request when
from the corner of her eye she saw another newcomer and
after giving her a quick glance, looked back at the patient
and said rather more loudly than necessary:
" Ofcourse. I'll find you a doctor immediately. "

She stepped from behind the desk which put her almost face
to face with the CMO and feigning surprise she said: " Oh.
Commander Summers!"

Rangi had not expected to be in the infirmary so long but
she had no hesitation in asking, for the Marine Captain
looked far from well.

" Umm..yes, the patient needs to see a doctor and I'm
just..."

" I can see her." Rangi interrupted and stepping towards
Jade said: " Follow me please." She glanced back over her
shoulder. " Which exam room is free?" she asked the nurse
and having been given a reply  turned to Jade and said:
" Its just along here."

"Thank you doctor." Jade said trying to give her smile but
even that slight motion made her headache worse Jade also
had her hand out along the wall just incase she felt faint
again. This is the worse she's felt even when she had that
rash entering the exam room Jade slid up onto the biobed
hoping that they could figure out what's going on.

They entered an examination room and Rangi asked Jade to lay
down on the biobed though she needed a steadying hand to do
so.
The screen above the bed activated immediately but Rangi
took little notice, instead taking a padd, soon finding and
opening Jades medical history.
" So whats the problem exactly?" she asked as she accessed
details

Wincing a little as she laid her head down on the biobed
Jade moved her head so she look at the doctor, "while on the
last mission my body reacted badly to the radiation and the
medical staff on the Chimera was able to treat it." Jade

said taking a minute to allow her headache to subside a

little, "but once we got back to UNITY I've been having
really bad headaches where I haven't been able to do
anything." Jade said looking at the doctor.

"  I see....and you have one now?"

Rangi glanced up at the screen, back to Jade and then back
to the padd in her hands.
The history showed no illness or injury of anykind until the
recent radiation episode.

"Yes and it subsides and then comes back even stronger."
Jade said raising her hands to rub her temples to see if
that'll relieve some of the pain while the doctor does her
examination.

" Can you describe it to me? Is it a dull ache?...a
stabbing pain?"

"I can feel the pain moving from the back of my head to the
front and it's like someone is constantly pounding on my
head." Jade said continuing to rub her temples.

" I can give you something for that in a moment. " Rangi
said. " I just need to do a couple of scans first. Try to
relax, it wont take long."

The medtricorder gave instant readings but they didnt make
sense.

" Ok. " Rangi said. " I need to take a blood sample."

The med trolley, fully equipped, stood near the end of the
biobed. Rangi selected the tool she needed and pressed it
against Jades arm, drawing off a few millilitres of blood.
She laid it back on the tray and lifted a hypo filled with a
painkiller and administered the dose.
" There, that will help. " she said.

"Thank you." Jade said glad that she might be feeling some
relief from the pain. She then waited to see what else the
doctor had to say hoping that the blood samples would tell
them what's going on.

Rangi had moved to the small work station at the far side of
the room and began testing the sample but what she saw made
her pause thoughtfully. After a few seconds she returned to
Jades side.

" I'm afraid I need a little more time. " she said. " But
theres a possibility that you wont be leaving
with Chimera."

Jade just nodded she would've preferred to join the Chimera
on the new mission but with these headaches she would be
more of a liability then being helpful. "I can live with
that." Jade said giving a weak smile, "would I need to stay
in sickbay?" Jade asked never enjoying spending a lot of
time in sickbay.

" For the time being yes...until we can get the headaches
under control. Don't worry.." she added with an
understanding smile. " It will only be for a day or so and
you needed be confined to bed, you can use the day rooms."

Nodding Jade was okay with spending a day or two in the infirmary to make sure these headaches are not so bad. "Thank you doctor for seeing me." Jade said glad that the pain killers are working and that she could finally get some rest.

[USS Chimera] SD 240908.01 | Joint Log | MGen. Sharpe & LtMaj. Shao

=/\= SB Unity, Task Force Decks =/\=

Why was it when you tried to get away from something, you were just pulled right back towards it even harder?

Dare Shao, former marine, former pilot, former...assassin, former lots of things, sighed as she stalked up the halls towards a destination that she knew would displease her greatly.  This was the second time she'd been pulled from her semi retirement since returning from Civonian space and it was starting to get annoying.  Whilst she was only 151 years old, she'd already seen enough and done enough to last her a lifetime

Gazing once more at her PADD, the Ka`Leigh woman stopped and stepped up to a desk.  "Is this the office for Sharpe?" she asked bluntly, wasting no time of being pleasant.

The blonde female officer looked up suddenly at the voice. She brushed her hair from her face and looked up… way up… at the new arrival. “This is indeed the office of Major General Richard Sharpe.” Sophie said. “Do you have an appointment, Ms…?”

Dare looked down at the small human.  "I am Dare Shao.  This Sharpe fellow requested to meet with me...at my earliest convenience.  *Now* is convenient for me."

Sophie looked nonplussed at this arrogant woman. “What if now is not convenient for the General?” She asked, sweetly.

"Then I leave now and ignore his request to meet with me."  She dumped the PADD on the human's desk.  "His words, not mine... 'I invite you to attend a meeting with me at your earliest possible convenience.' It's right there, if you dont beleive me." Dare clasped her hands behind her back and rocked back on her heels slightly, looking extremely comfortable just standing there.  She could do this all day if she had to.

Sophie sighed, and pressed the intercom buzzer. “General, sorry to disturb you, but I have a Ms. Shao out here, demanding to see you.”

“Send her in, Leftenant.” Richard’s voice could be heard.

“You may go in, Ms. Shao.” Sophie said, indicating the large double doors at the end of the outer office.

Dare inclined her head slightly to Sophie, before turning away and walked off, boots clicking.  She pushed the doors open and entered, eyeing the oppulent room with disdain as she approached the desk that a rather obvious marine sat behind.  Her expression was composed in a carefully neutral expression by the time she stopped in front of him.  "Dare Shao, former Lieutenant," she greeted him.  "You wished to speak with me?”

She didnt salute, as far as she was concerned, she'd retired, but she stood straight backed at a sort of attention.

Richard placed down the padd he was reading and turned to look at the tall woman who had just entered the room. “Ah yes, Dare Shao. I’ve read your rather interesting file. I must say you’re somewhat more striking in person than your records lead me to believe.”

She nodded once.  "Your records only date back maybe five years.  That's hardly enough time to record over fifty years of combat experience."  A smile almost graced her lips.  "May I enquire about the reason I was pulled from my retirement to meet with you?"

“You can ask, by all means.” Richard said. “You were pulled back because we are at war with the Romulan Star Empire, and we need every capable person we can get. There is a mission coming up where your… skills, would be an advantage.”

"I see.  And just what skills does Starfleet think I have that can help with thier war?" Dare asked, moving over to a wall and looking at the collection of items there.

“Your ability to get things done, without regard for the rule book or how it is done. Your philosophy of the ends justify the means is exactly what I’m looking for, for the platoon leader of a special unit I’m putting together.” Richard said.

Her head tilted slightly, but she didn't turn to face him.  "I see," she said again.  "So my absolute willingness to cause immense collateral damage, whether it be to property or life, whilst completely my missions makes me exactly what you want?  I have to admit, your Starfleet's standards are certainly strange."

“Certainly not. I imagine that Starfleet would berate me something fierce for encouraging you to do that.” He said. “But I’m a realist.” Richard got up from behind his desk and walked around in front of it. “I know that a fight is not as black and white as Starfleet brass or the Federation council would like it to be. Sometimes, we need some rouges out there, doing what needs to be done.”

Dare turned, crossing her arms over her chest as she regarded the man at the desk.  "Funny that.  Starfleet suggested I retire because of my rougish behavior."  This time she didnt hide the smirk.

“The SSF think differently, Ms. Shao.” Richard said. “So, do you want back in?”

One of her delicate brows quirked again.  Well, well, well.  First it was the SFMC, then Starfighters, then Security laying claim to her unusual skills, and now Special Forces wanted a bit of the action too?

Dare considered.  She had her son to think of, but he was 50 now, so old enough to hold up on his own on occassion if she had to go.  "A tempting offer, to say the least, General," she said.  "A possibility of Starfleet finally using my abilities to thier full potential..."

“Well, it had to happen eventually.” He smirked. “Before you accept, you should know that there are some… conditions.”

"Arent there always?" she responded with a grin.  "And what would those conditions be?"

Richard began walking the length of his office, his hands behind his back. “You would be operating outside of the chain of command, directly under my command. You will lead a team of special forces personnel whom you may pick from out of the MEF’s roster, but I must sign off on each selection.” He said.

“Furthermore, you will follow my orders, regardless of what they are. It may be necessary for you to operate in an area where marines or Starfleet are operating, and it must be essential that they not know you’re there unless I state otherwise.” Richard said. “Lastly, if anyone asks, you’re just a platoon leader within the MEF, nothing special at all.”

So, sneaky stuff.  She used to assassinate people to collect bounties, she could do sneaky.  Though sneaky with a whole heap of people, that could be a fun challange. "I bring my own weapons," she said after a few more moments consideration.  "I'll train with other weapons like the rest of them, but if you want results, I need my personal cache."

“If you can get it past that bastard Mumacik, you’re welcome to it.” Richard said. “I’ve got my own cache, so I know what you mean.”

The corners of her eyes crinkled as she smiled.  "I got this past starbase security..."  She reached up behind her and withdrew her mono filament katana from its scabard hidden beneath her trenchcoat.  The blade wasnt visable, but as she turned it this way and that, there was a slight blue sheen revealing an extremely long blade.

“I think getting weapons past just one person will be easy."

“Don’t bet on it.” Richard smirked. “Mumacik is not a normal person.”

Dare flickered for a moment before completely disappearing from Richard's view.  When she reappared she was sitting in his seat, legs crossed.  "Neither am I."

“Oh very nice.” Richard said. “Now out of the chair.” He said, gesturing with his thumb for her to move.

She chuckled.  "Much too...cosy for my liking anyway." Standing, she came around the desk and stood before him.  "Count me in."

“Alright.” Richard said. “I’ll give you a commission as a Lieutenant Major.” Sliding a padd across the desk to her. “Head over to the QM’s office to get yourself allocated quarters and a uniform.”

Dare looked at the PADD.  "They must be quarters that will house myself and my son.  Would you make note of that in here?  I have had issues with the quartermasters in the past."  So, she was back in the game.  This was going to be fun.

Richard made the necessary note on the PADD. “There you are. Carry on, Major Shao.”

She sketched him a salute.  "General," she said, taking back the PADD and made her exit, resheathing the blade as she did so. She was looking forward to this, it would be nice to play games again.

*** Med Advisors Office * StarBase Unity ***

When Rangi returned to her office for the first time in
several weeks, she had expected to find a great deal of work
waiting for her attention. Even with the help from her
deputy it had piled up but when she entered the room she
stopped and said slowly : "Wow" when she saw the neat stacks
of padds.

She crossed to her chair, sat down and scooted it forward
then taking and releasing a deep breath she opened the first
report.

The hours passed without much interruption and by midmorning
she was beginning to think she had made some headway and
decided to break off for a drink. She had just got to her
feet when the door opened and a man she did not recognise
entered the room followed quickly by her yeoman who said :
" Ma'am I'm so sorry..but he wouldnt listen to me."

First Lieutenant Castillo walked into the office and
immediately approached the Commander,
"Excuse me, but I have a pressing medical issue that could
not wait. "
He glanced at the man who had attempted to block his
entrance, " You see, I have several pressing matters to
attend to shortly and my ships medical staff isn't fully
staffed at the moment..."
He stopped suddenly,
"Can I speak with you PRIVATELY", he added glaring at the
yeoman.

"Shall I call security ma'am?" the yeoman asked glaring back
at the intruder.

" No..its alright Nick. Thankyou I'll deal with this." Rangi
answered.
Nick seemed none too sure that this was a wise move but gave
a short nod and backed away.
" Very well ma'am..I'll be right outside."

When the door closed behind him Rangi looked at the
newcomer.
" And who might you be and what is this pressing medical
issue that cannot wait?" she asked.

"Lieutenant Castillo.Actually", Charly began. "I was hoping
you would tell me". He stepped closer to the doctor, "My
shoulder is aching quite badly."
As he stepped he placed his left arm over his right shoulder
and rubbed it,

"Unfortunately I was unable to find a masseuse anywhere",
he said clearly expecting the Commander to agree with him at
what a horrible tragedy that was.

Rangi looked at him in silence wondering for a moment
whether he was trying to be funny. She stepped back from her
desk and walked around it to stand in front of him.
" You burst in here because you have an aching shoulder?"
she asked coldly.

Charly stopped as if someone had just slapped him. His hand
moved away from his shoulder.
"Perhaps you didn't understand me", he began slowly. "I
think it may be sprained, or worse, You are a DOCTOR are you
not?". Without waiting for her to reply, "then do something
to help me, or give me something to help with the pain!"

He did his best not to sound condescending.
{ Is all medical staff on this damn starbase this
incompetent } he thought.

" Oh, you're in pain are you?" she asked. " Well I wonder
why you didnt go straight to the infirmary. There are 'many'
qualified doctors there who would have treated you."

Charly sighed, "Look", he began, "I didn't want to say
anything, but the truth is", he paused, "I'm not sure you
have the proper security clearance to hear this, but, well
I'm the Deputy Chief Security officer on board the USS
Chimera." he said, obviously ignorant to Rangi's own service
aboard the ship.

"Its a Special Forces ship", he added clearly attempting to
impress her. "I don't have time to be waiting in the normal
infirmary where all the regular starfleet people go, I have
several important pressing matters that I need to attend
too, soon".

" I see." she replied, in a tone that implied she had just
been allowed to know a great secret. "Well, in that case you
had better take a seat." she replied " I'll examine you at
once ofcourse. Just a moment."

She turned away, hiding the amusement that filled her eyes
and threatened to make her laugh and retreived a
medtricorder from the grey medcase that lay on floor beside
her chair.
She gave him a reassuring smile as she returned to where he
sat.

" Initial scan." she explained and hovered the tool above
his shoulder then swept it over the entire area.
" Mmmmmm..." she said, sounding thoughtful then " Ohhhhh."

She took a step back and made great play of adjusting the
setting.
With another small smile she resumed her position and began
a second scan which by now had told her there was certainly
no damage to the joint and in fact very little problem
whatsoever.

"Uhha." she said after a few seconds as though all had been
revealed.
She switched off the medtool.
" I need to carry out a physical exam." she said.

"What?, Why?, Charly said suddenly worried. "What does that
mean?"

Rangi shrugged.
" It means a physical examination of your shoulder. I can
manipulate it to find out the amount of movement you have
and then decide on any ......treatment."
She smiled.

The lieutenant's eyes widened when she said the word
'treatment', and that wicked little smile she gave made him
feel uncomfortable,
"Uhhh, you know, now that I think of it, my shoulder is
starting to feel better already, perhaps I don't need to do
a physical?", he said, getting up and stepping towards the
door, "Perhaps if it gets worse after a few days I could
come back". he added half-way out the door with a wave.

" Come back here!"

Her tone told him he had better listen or face the
consequences.
Rangi remained where she was and waited for him to return.
She could see Nick looking in through the open door as
Charley made his way back.
"Now lets get a few things straight." she said. " I'll tell
you when to leave."
She looked him up and down slowly.

" I dont know who you think you are Lieutenant but you will
never again assume that you can enter the office of the
First Task Forces Medical Advisor without an appointment.
Neither will you waste any of my doctors time with a
nonexistant complaint. There's nothing wrong with your
shoulder. At most you have lifted or carried a heavy weight
and the unaccustomed exercise is causing a minor ache which
will pass very quickly.
Further more..." she continued as he was about to speak.
"...I'm astounded that you have the position on board
Chimera when you seem ready to divulge any and all
information about yourself and your ship to someone you do
not know."

"Ma'am", Charly coughed as if he'd swallowed something
extremely bitter. "I didn't know", he swallowed, "I mean, I
thought you were just a doctor...Look, can we not report
this, I just got here, they'd probably send me packing if
they heard that".

He looked appalled but Rangi wasnt entirely convinced. "It
states it clearly enough on the door." she said then without
answering his plea added curtly : " You're dismissed." and
turned away, placing him in her mind into the list of
hypochondriacs she knew and also as a young upstart who
thought he was a big fish in a small pond.

Nick, who had heard the end of the conversation stepped
inside the room. " Lieutenant?" he said loudly.

Charly turned and looked at the man now addressing him. "I
know where the door is", he said abrasively and walked out.

"Yes?"

" Sir, Commander Summers is asking to see you."

" Thankyou Kate...send her in please."

Stephen Jacobs pressed pause on the padd he was reading and
looked expectantly towards the door which soon opened to
allow Rangi into the room.

"Good morning Commander." she said brightly as she
approached his desk. " I'm fit for duty!"

As she had made her way to the Counselling Suite, she had
decided to take the same attitude that Stephen had done at
their last meeting and come straight to the point and state
a fact.He had told her to tell him when she was fit for duty
and thats exactly what she would do.

His expression was similar to that one would give a tiresome
child. He said nothing but merely pointed to the vacant
chair opposite his own.

She sat down expectantly, waiting for him to ask why she had
that opinion and perhaps to question her on the aftermath of
her recent experiences but he didnt.
Instead he pulled a blank padd from a pile near his elbow,
tapped in a few words then signed it.

" There you go." he said pushing it towards her across the
crowded desk.

She reached out to take it and saw that it was an approval
for her immediate return to duty. She stared at it then
looked at him suspiciously.

"Is there something else?" he asked and then before she
could answer added " Good." and returned to the padd he had
been reading, effectively ending what little conversation
there had been and dismissing her from his attention.

She looked down at the padd again and frowned.

" I thought we were to have an assessment." she said into
the silence.
He raised his eyes and then his head.

"We just did didn't we?" he asked.

"Did we?" she queried wondering what she had missed.

He released a sigh, pointedly switched off the padd and
looked at her with an expression that said: "' Try' to keep
up!"

" I assume you know the rhyme about nails." he said.

"Nails?" she repeated uncertaintly

"Horse-shoe nails"

"Errrr......."

He enlightened her: "For want of a nail a horse-shoe was
lost...for want of a horse-shoe the horse was lost..for want
of a horse, the battle..and for want of the battle a
kingdom."

" Riiight." she said with a touch more uncertainty than
before.

" I told you that you're not essential and thats perfectly
true as regards all of your duties on this base but you are
the nail on which greater things could hinge." he said then
leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking as he did so.

" Ohh." she said because he seemed to expect a responce.

" Commodore Guzman is, for the moment, essential and I could
make a safe wager that despite his medals and commendations,
his rank and his experience, 'you' are essential to 'him'."
He paused and they looked at each other in silence, she
beginning to understand what he meant and he knowing that
she did so.

He leaned forward, resting his arms on the desk.
"Therefore it follows, that if you place yourself under more
pressure by returning to duty after not one but two
stressful missions, then it is certain that you will fail
and the knock on effect of that will be that the Commodore
will, despite his best efforts, be distracted from his own
duties by concern for you. That makes you, in effect, a
nail. Clear?"

"Perfectly." Rangi replied.

" Good. Anything else?" he asked.

" No....thankyou."

"Good day to you then Commander."

Once again he returned to his padd and this time Rangi
stood up walked to the door and exited his office.
She did understand his meaning. She had been stressed, too
stressed to have carried out her duties efficiently and she
admitted that to herself.
He had ensured she rested and recovered.
She knew she was now ready for duty and he had trusted her
self evaluation and he had ensured that Shane would have no
personal worries added to the load he carried.
Rangi made her way to the med. Advisors office feeling
satisfied with the outcomeof their meeting.

Stephen had not watched her leave and did not think of her
again throughout the rest of the day.

[USS Chimera] SD 240907.31 || Duty Log || Capt Rojac, CO ||

[Bridge - Deck One - USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]

"Captain on the deck!" The security officer on bridge duty called as Cropa passed through the turbolift doors.

"At ease." He said as he approached the command dais to relieve the Officer of the Watch, LtCmdr Saren. Saren was a tall, dark-skinned vulcan that was a whiz at administration. He transferred over from an Operations position at Fort Bragg to ship duty after the loss of his family on V'Tar III. Rojac was more than happy to have him aboard - so far he was a good officer of the watch. "Report, Mr. Saren."

Saren nodded. "Marine Captain Reese and the Quartermaster report that the shipment has arrived. UNITY assures our engineers will have ten workerbees with which to apply the plating to the outer hull."

Rojac nodded. "Is Mr. Kroitzer planning to attempt another spacewalk?" He asked.

Saren cocked an eyebrow. "I am unsure, Captain. I can contact him if you-"

"That won't be necessary, Commander." Rojac said, walking past the vulcan and taking his seat. "What of the Erassian Squadron?"

"According to last contact they should be landing within the hour." Saren informed him. "They have been assigned the Shadow Squadron's quarters."

"Good." Rojac replied. He needed to remember to send those pilot's letters of gratitude. They only flew a few missions aboard the Chimera, but he appreciated their service all the same. "Well, then, Commander, I relieve you."

"I stand relieved." Saren saluted, then turned on his heel and left the bridge.

Rojac sat in his chair for a moment, reviewing departmental reports as the came in during the change of shift throughout the bridge. He looked up as the door hissed open and Lt. Dior approached the helm. "Lieutenant," He called, "how are our warp coils performing?"

Reese and her team had finished the repair the Lieutenant requested the day before, and so far Dior's day had been spent running diagnostics and simulations to recalibrate their alignments. "They are performing admirably, Captain." Rayna replied with a genuine grin. "We've increased warp field efficiency by .05%."

"Excellent work." Rojac said. "Was their considerable damage from our journey through the Grand Banks?"

"Not considerable damage, but it's better to be safe than sorry, Captain." She added.

"Agreed." Rojac nodded. "As you were, Lieutenant."

"Captain," The Operations Bridge Office on duty called, "the installation team is ready to begin."

"Give them the go ahead, Ensign." Rojac ordered.

"Aye sir."

Rojac watched as the first of the workerbees left the shuttle bay with the first piece of the dark hull plating. It was a dubious effort to be sure, but if anyone could get it done within a week it would be the Chimera's engineering team. Of course they had the aide of the Tarangour shipyard too, but mos of Commander Rodger's teams were busy applying repairs and hull plating to the Rapier as well - who was to accompany the Chimera in their part of Operation Magna - along with the USS Eagle. All three ships were being outfitted with the Erassian stealth plating technology to help them sneak into the Stellar Nursery for their part of the operation.

Chisulo had put Rojac in charge of Beta Group, by order of Commodore Guzman. It was the most delicate part of the Operation, but Chisulo was confident in Rojac's abilities. He would have led the Operation himself, he told Rojac, but he Romulans kept too close of an eye on him after Khasazi Pass, Narendra, and V'Tar; and secrecy was of the utmost importance in Beta Group's task. As such, he was deploying himself to the Erassian Second Fleet as a diversion - and to help out in their assault against a Romulan supply depot supporting the occupation of Erassian settlements in the Solrin sector. It was a good move. Chisulo had developed a reputation on Romulus and was sure to be a target of their intelligence operatives. They would be keeping tabs on the tactical advisor, and if he was on Beta Group it could jeopardize all of Operation Magna.

Rojac wondered if he was ready for the full weight of the responsibility as he watched the workerbee lower the first section of hull plating to the engineers in envirosuits on the outside of the hull. Thousands of lives were being risked to ensure the success of his part of the mission. Klingons, Erassians, and Federation citizens we creating a diversion for his team. If he failed, their lives would be placed in jeopardy for nothing.

But he had no intention of failing. He may be the youngest Commander of a starship in the SSF, but he had proven himself in battle. He had uncovered a Breen Installation on Antignonis V, he made first contact with a new race, he provided humanitarian aide to Charos VI and strengthened ties between the Federation and the Erassian Alliance. He placed a crucial role in the battle of Aeran III, saving the strategic starbase and colony from occupation by Romulan forces by risking his own ship. He had proven himself a capable commander and strategist, deserving of commanding the flagship of the First Taskforce. And he was going to prove that again in Operation Magna. He had the best ship and the best crew in Starfleet, and Romulus was soon to be keeping tabs on him.
