head in an attempt to stop him moving "...you're wriggling
like a worm on a hook!"
He eyed her momentarily before disappearing beneath the face
cloth that she brandished unmercifully.
He spluttered and as she rubbed his mouth and chin but she
looked pleased with her efforts.
"There.." she said"...that's better...all gone."
Martin stood on tiptoes to look into the mirror and saw for
himself that the blue juice stains had finally been removed.
The only thing blue now, was the nasty bruise on his
forehead. He grinned at Rangis reflection and began to soap
his hands in the wash basin, rubbing them with gusto in the
suds.
Suddenly form the main room, they heard the sound of the
door sliding open and someone entering.
"Who's that?" Martin asked, pausing with his hands still in
the warm water and they both looked towards the door.
" I dont know." Rangi said quietly and handed him the towel
she had been holding. He took it and began to dry his hands
as she moved to the door where she stopped, totally
unprepared by
the figure she saw.
"It's you." she said in a mix of surprise and recognition.
"Commander Summers," Nicolas Harker greeted her where he
stood in front of the doorway, flanked by two Romulan
soldiers. "It's good to see you again. I trust you had a
pleasant journey?"
Rangis lips drew a thin line of displeasure.
"I had no wish to journey here at all as you well know." she
said coldly,
stepping forward into the main room. Martin followed her,
wondering who this person was.
Nicolas frowned. "I'm sorry you feel that way," he said as
if genuinely regretful. "I always had great admiration for
you... a dedicated officer with an impeccable record. Your
medical staff were very friendly and efficient, I remember."
"Your compliments are wasted." Rangi replied. " What do you
want with us?...why have you brought us here?"
"Why don't we go talk a walk," he said, then looked at
Martin for the first time. "Would you like some ice cream?"
Martin gave Rangi a quick glance then looked back towards
Harker.
Although the man was smiling at him, Martin didnt like him,
reasoning that
this was the person who had spoiled the little holiday and
who had, indirectly, been
the cause of him being flung against the wall. Now he stodd
there offering the treat of an icecream.
Martins answer was definate.
"No I don't!" he replied through a scowl.
"Hmmm, no matter," Nicolas replied. He then stood aside and
lifted his arm, indicated for Rangi and Martin to step
outside. Once outside, he fell into step beside them in the
corridor. The starbase was a much different place than most
Federation citizens were used to. Though it was
sophisticated and even somewhat elegant in design, it was
very simplistic and there was very little in the way of
everyday technology onboard. The occasional replicator or
other piece of technology available was clearly Romulan in
origin and did not fit with its surroundings. There were no
automatic doors, no visible computer terminals, no plasma
lighting.
"I'm sure you wonder where you are," Nicolas said. "This is
a Quorum station. They are a group of somewhat... simplistic
races. Quite intelligent, yes, but they believe very
strongly one must not rely on technology. They only use it
when necessary."
Rangi turned her head to look at him when she answered.
"And they use Romulan technology?" she asked in a part
statement part question tone. " ...that's interesting."
paid attention, for there could be a chance to find a way of
escape.
Martin clutched her hand and trotted along side, glancing
now and then at the
guards who followed them closely.
explained. "The Romulans annexed this territory many years
ago and no matter how resourceful they may be, they are
quite attached to their modern technology."
Behind them, the tall Anxinar guard that had previously been
with Nicolas when he met Regina joined the two Romulan
guards who were with them. "Thilmar, I was wondering where
you'd been," Nicolas said as he spotted the guard. "Has
everything been taken care of."
"Yes sir," the Anxinar replied.
Nicolas stopped walking and narrowed his eyes at the man as
if something was wrong. With lightning reflexes, Thilmar
drew a pair of knives and drove them into the spines of the
unsuspecting Romulans. Nicolas pushed Rangi out of the way
and drew his disruptor. He fired, but the beam only scraped
the Anxinar man's side as he reached up and cut into
Harker's upper arm.
"Uahk?!" Nicolas shouted as he stepped back. Thilmar's eyes
were glowing a deep amber and he'd suddenly shortened two
inches, his face also becoming slightly rounder. Harker
didn't hesitate again and fired his disruptor straight into
the man's chest. Thilmar collapsed to the floor and morphed
back into the chameloid Uahk, who had come to seek revenge
for Harker's attempt to kill him.
Nicolas looked at his tattered arm and turned to grab Rangi,
but when he looked in her direction she was gone and instead
a crowd was milling about, blocking his view of exits to
other corridors and rooms.
silvery robes said to Rangi and Martin as Harker confronted

steadily then made a gesture that she follow and began to
move into the crowd that was quickly gathering.
"Come on" she said to Martin, making the decision and
holding his hand tightly, pushed her way past the onlookers.

The room was high and was, Rangi thought, probably some
place of worship. It was decorated most beautifully with
wall paintings that reached to the ceiling, itself richly
ornemented. A huge chandelier hung near the centre a blaze
of light above them. Candles glowed along the walls and a
raised platform at one end was hung with heavily embroidered
drapes.
The two robed figures stood a little apart from Rangi and
martin, hands folded in front of them.
"Who are you?" Rangi asked.
"Our names are not important; we are Ruh'Bazeans of the
religious caste," one of them said in a melodic whisper.
"We do not like the Romulan's presence here; it is
disturbing us," the other replied in a similar voice. "The
man named Harker must be stopped."
....I dont know where we are. I need to get back there or
at least contact them. Can you help me? "
She had hoped for some definate responce but one figure
remained motionless whilst the other bowed his head slightly
and pointed to a door on the far side of the room. The first
figure began to move towards it, the second indicated that
Rangi and Martin follow and he walked with them.

one said while another secured the door. "Do not worry, all
will be well."
