[USS Chimera] SD 240911.07 Joint Log, Capt Rojac, Cmdr Summers & Maj Cortez

OOC: Forwarding on behalf of Rangi (apology if this has been sent before.)

[Recovery Wards - Main Hospital - SB 234: UNITY]

The tall bearded figure stood next to the bed staring at the
sensor read-outs on the screens above the bed. Concern was
evident on his face. The marine under observation was sent
into battle under the man's command with little hope of
actual success. At the time, the man had thought nothing of
it. He had worked with the marine before and had seen him
accomplish many seemingly impossible tasks - but now it
seemed he had pushed the envelope too far.
Cortez laid on the bed with a surgical arch looming above
his chest. It was monitoring his vitals and projecting a
small structural integrity field that kept his new, weakened
lungs inflated.
The guilt Rojac faced was horrendous.

Cortez wasnt allowed visitors yet so Rangi, coming to check
on him, was surprised to see someone beside the bed. "May I
help you?" she asked stepping into the room ready to point
the person in the way he needed to go.

Rojac turned around to see the familiar face of Dr. Summers.
"Rangi," he muttered, "is he going to make it?"

Her frown disappeared as she recognized Chimera's Captain
and she moved to stand beside him. "Well...despite what this
seems to indicate, I'd say his chances are improving" she
said glancing up at the overbed display. "It's early days of
course but I'm carefully confident."

It was at this point that Cortez suddenly woke up. He heard
Summers speak and was about to open his eyes to see who she
was talking too when he heard Captain Rojac's voice and
decided to keep them shut.

"'Carefully confident.'" Rojac half-smirked. "That sounds
promising. Fisher reported that he'll need new lungs and
that he's lucky to be alive." Rojac said. "How did the
surgery go?"

"Rather well." Rangi replied. " We didnt have any major
problems. They tried a similar idea years ago but its been
refined and the success rate is actually quite high." She
turned away and sorted through a number of padds on a nearby
station. "If you're interested" she said over her shoulder,
"this will tell you more about it."

She returned to him offering a padd. "We use stem cells of
course and basically take a piece of the tissue we want to
grow..Cortez's lung in this case... strip it down to basics
leaving just the protein skeleton, add the new cells and off
we go."

She smiled to Rojac." Its in laymen's terms but interesting
reading."

"Good." Rojac replied, glancing over the cover page. "My
medical experience is limited to emergency medical
training." After a moment he dropped his hand down to his
side and looked back to the Marine in the bed. "You will
keep me apprised of his progress?" He asked. "I would like
to be here as soon as he wakes up."

" Of course." Rangi replied."I'll call you immediately."
Rojac gave a nod of acknowledgement and giving Cortez
another glance, turned and walked away.
Rangi watched him go then stepped closer to the bed.He was
doing as well as could be expected given the circumstances
but rangi released a small sigh.
" Come on.." she murmured " You said you owed me one."

[USS Chimera] SD240911.05 | Back Personal Log | COps, QM | MCapt Jade Reese and GSgt S'hae D'Belzen (NPC) | "Old Acquaintances"

= Classroom 1A, SB UNITY =

As Jade finished up her first class she stayed behind to speak with Louis (NPC), "so how did you think they did?" Jade asked her aide that she also learned that he's working on becoming a instructor at the academy.

"They know how to think outside of the box but need to do it faster." Louis said pulling up some of the video, "like here the LtJg did anticipate something and had a plan but was uncertain on how to start the plan." Louis added as he allowed the video to continue to play.

"I agree." Jade said looking up at the video, "I think we just need to do simulation after simulation and just drill in the class room." Jade said stopping the video. "We'll hold class not tomorrow but the next day." Jade added needing a day or so to go over all the footage.

"Yes ma'am." Louis said picking up his materials and notes that he'll compile tonight and send over to Jade so she could look over them and then make a lesson plan with what she has and what Louis gave her, "well see you then." Louis said smiling.

Jade nodded as she watched the young Ensign head out of the class room on his way out he gave a nod to a female Andorian who looked familiar to Jade. It couldn't be Jade thought to herself, "S'hae?" Jade said loud enough for the Andorian hear.

The Andorian looked up and smiled, "how could you forget a face like this after the things we've been through." She said smiling as she walked down the steps to where Jade was seeing. "I mean for gods sake I was your Platoon Sergeant when we were dealing with the Gorn incursions on Cestus III." She added with a big grin she was one of the few that enjoyed fighting the Gorn.

"Damn it is you." Jade said smiling walking forward to greet her old Platoon Sergeant and friend, "I see at least you've been promoted." Jade said remembering the few times where she had to connivence JAG not press charges after a nights of drinking. "I'm assuming that you got your drinking under control." Jade said.

"Yes and no." S'hae (NPC) said smiling, "and I got promoted shortly after you left and joined the "Squids"." S'hae said with a look of why did you do that on her face.

"Hey lets not get into that now I had my reasons and I'm sticking with them." Jade said, "but I'll never forget what you did for me on that last incident." Jade said getting very serious.

"I know you won't and plus all the times you've saved me from JAG we should be even." She said grinning and bringing her into a embrace. "It's been too long." S'hae said.

"I know." Jade said as they continued to embrace after a few more seconds they disengaged the embrace, "so what brings you to UNITY?" Jade asked.

"Well I've got some news for you Sgt Vera Drake has been transferred SFMC wants her back to become a drill instructor which leaves the Chimera short a Quartermaster." S'hae said taking a breath and heading Jade a PADD, "anyways I've been acting as a supply officer for the 5th Platoon on a remote base near the badlands and I've been wanting a transfer and SFMC finally agreed and transferred me to the Chimera." S'hae said smiling.

"Ah the Badlands." Jade said remembering a couple of her friends that joined the SFMC were stationed there on ships and remote bases most of them hated it but like any good Marine you put up with it. "Well it's going to be sad to see Drake go she's been one of the better QM's I've had." Jade said, "but I'm glad you're the one they've decided to replace her." Jade said smiling.

"Same here." S'hae said smiling, "also I was thinking that I could bunk with you until the Chimera gets back." S'hae said with those same eyes she would use to connivence Jade to go out celebrating after a successful mission while they were on Cestus III.

"Sure plus it'll give us a chance to catch up. I'll meet you there in 5 I need to get some things done." Jade said giving S'hae a card to her quarters.

"Thanks." S'hae said smiling she then turned and headed out of the class room and to Jade's temp quarters.

[Ready Room - Deck One - USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]

Scott walked up to the door of the Captain's Ready Room and knocked on the door and entered into the room ignoring the chime.  He handed over a padd to Cropa.  "Captain, these are my initial report findings.  We are now fully docked at Starbase 234: Unity and we have started preparing the most severely injured crewmen for transfer to Unity."

The Captain nodded, and briefly glanced at the padd before placing it at the top of his "in" stack at the corner of his desk. He waved toward the empty seat in front of the desk. "Have a seat, Major. We have much to discuss."

"Thank you Captain, I imagine we do."  Walters said sitting in the proffered chair.

"So," Rojac leaned back into the soft leather of his chair, "how do you think we did?"

"Honestly?"  Walters started.  "...Not good.  Average at best.  We have too many new crewmen who are untested under fire who hesitate before following orders.  The crew haven't worked together long enough to build up a level of trust with each other and that's affecting performance.  The most critical failure of this mission though was a severe lack of critical intelligence which caused the loss of one ship and almost a second, nearly resulting in a Mission Fail.  As it stands it was hardly a resounding victory...if not for the EAS Samson we would be dead now if not from the last Thelaron Cruiser, then that Heavy War Cruiser that was coming through the gate."

Rojac furrowed his brow and brought a hand to his lips. "I'm not convinced it was a Romulan War Cruiser coming through that gate?"

Walters raised his head and looked Rojac directly in the eyes.  "Not that I've not had similar misgivings but what makes you say that Captain?"

"We've had no trouble detecting the Romulan ships present in this dimension already, why couldn't our sensors pick up that last one?" Rojac was thinking more out loud rather than asking the Major
directly. "And if the situation is as dire in that dimension as Colonel Ivanov depicts it, then why haven't we seen any Heavy Cruisers here before?"

"No." Rojac said quietly. "I think it was something other than Romulan coming through. Maybe Borg, or maybe not." He looked up to Walters, "But whatever it was, I saw fear in Ivanov's eyes when he got word. It was just a glimmer, but it was there all the same."

"Perhaps if the situation is as dire as Colonel Ivanov says, the reason we may not have seen the Heavy War Cruiser is that the Romulans may be using them as their main line of defense whilst letting the lighter Thelaron Cruisers take on the job of crushing enemies 30 years obsolete in this universe?"  Walters hypothesized.

"Possibly." Cropa took a deep breath. "So the crew." He tried to get back on track. "Hopefully most of them were baptized by fire and won't be so green the next go around. And hopefully, UNITY will give us some more hard nosed people to work with."

"This ship has a history of delving into unknown situations, Major." Rojac said. "Before the war, most of our operations were extremely time sensitive and hard data was hard to come by. Intelligence is a necessity we have learned to do without. Especially since the Council tends to disapprove of Intelligence Operations as a general rule." Rojac half smirked, "So I fear we're going to have to rely more on wit than planning."

"That approach has cost thousand of troops lives and not just those of green rookies.  What SSF will be pretty much left with is a handful of grizzled veterans who survived through luck and determination and a majority of inexperienced green troops who have likely been rushed out
of training to shore up numbers.  An intelligence based approach tends to create a far more balanced and beneficial outcome.  Whilst the military shouldn't dictate politics it should help influence and shape it...it's a thin line I know but it's worked out well for us in the Alliance."  Walters said.

Rojac sighed. "As history illustrates, the Alliance broke away in protest of the Federation's more ideological views. Views that are politics have not yet shed." The Captain said. "As a consequence, our political system is not as receptive to military advice as your government is. But even more so; Starfleet is not a full military organization either. I also acts as a diplomatic and law enforcement
agency."

"It's a lot of bureaucracy." Rojac said, "and makes the high level commanders a little out of place during wartime." He opened a drawer and dug through it as he kept talking. "Trust me Major, I would prefer that Starfleet operated more like the military, but a professional officer must follow the orders of the political system. At least until that system fails." He pulled out a padd and slid it across the table toward Walters. "I haven't given up hope yet."

Walters took the padd and brought up its contents which looked suspiciously like a calender filled with appointments.  "Care to explain what this is Captain?"

"Its our itinerary to attend a strategy meeting on Earth in two weeks." The Captain said. "We'll transit to HQ in San Francisco to present the intel we gathered on our last mission and discuss
strategies for further operations. That is unless you've been suddenly summoned back to Erass."

"Alas no."  Walters began.  "My superiors haven't seen fit to deprive me of me voicing my opinion to Starfleets most elite methuseleths and be promptly shouted down as I don't make nice with people trying to kill me.  I'm along for the ride whether I like it or not.  I hope you know some good bars there."

"Oh," Rojac gave a sardonic grin,"I do Major, I do."

[USS Chimera] SD240911.04 || Unity Sick Bay || Duty Log, CMDR Summers + Major Cortez + Lt. Fisher + Nurse Natalie

Herman <herman.oliver@gmail.com> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

(OOC...somewhat of a backlog, this occurs before Rangi treats General
Sharpe in sickbay)

*** Main Infirmary * SB Unity ***

Rangi had been ready and waiting in the main infirmary long before
Chimera was due home. Scott Fisher, CMO on board, had sent detailed
medical records of Major Cortez' condition and it was sobering
reading. Rangi had gathered a team and they were ready in the surgical
unit when Cortez was beamed aboard. The delicate procedure was time
consuming and at the end of it, Cortez survival rate was at best,
50/50 and that was being overly optimistic.

Those who believed in such things would say some entity had a
particular fondness for him and so had given a modicum of protection
but the apparent fact was that if the Romulan Disruptors beam had been
a pinch further to the left, Cortez would have been a name on a'
killed in action' list. His body armor had saved him, that much was
certain but even it could not deflect such a strong beam and had in
fact been fried, disintegrating into crisp flakes and molten liquid
both of which had entered Cortez' chest cavity and done its own damage
there.

'Ironic'. That's the first thing that popped into Cortez' mind as his
eyes opened and he saw Summers face staring at him, he'd expected to
be dead. At first it was blurry, but after a few moments it began to
straighten out and he realized he was still alive. He let in a deep
breath and swallowed. He tried moving, but his entire body felt numb
to the bone. "What the hell have you done to me", he managed to gasp
weakly at Rangi's face as it slowly focused in.

"You're in the infirmary on Unity." Rangi replied. Her tone was quiet
and calm."..and you're sedated because you needed surgery. Do you
remember what happened to you?"

Cortez swallowed the warm saliva that was forming in his mouth, he
paused as if his mind was rebooting, "I failed", he finally said
after several seconds of silence.

"You were injured." Rangi replied. " Quite seriously and that's why
you were beamed straight here."

A nurse, standing on the opposite side of the bed, reached out to dab
at the sides of his mouth with a cooling pad that wiped away a dribble
of saliva.

"You've had some surgery but you need more and I need to explain what
it is. Can you understand me?"

Richard nodded his head at Rangi's question. Glancing to his side he
saw another familiar face. He recognized the nurse from the sickbay
on the Chimera. "I'm sorry if I hurt you", he said now ignoring
Summers.

"You didn't" Natalie replied and gave a small smile. When Scott Fisher
had made arrangements for emergency transport, she had volunteered to
accompany him and he, reasoning that Natalie had nursed Cortez from
the outset, had agreed to it, actually taking little time over the
decision. Scott too was with the group, carefully monitoring Cortez
and the life support. Rangi glanced to him, checking herself and he
gave a short nod and answering her questioning expression replied "
It's ok."

She turned her attention back to Cortez. "You need extensive surgery."
she said and I need your permission to do it."

Richard looked over at Scott who's eye was a bit swollen and somewhat
red and let out a small laugh, which turned into a wet cough. "What
is it you want to do to me Doc", he finally responded switching his
gaze back to Summers.

"I want to give you some new lungs " she answered and saw the shock
and disbelief appear on his face. "The disruptor caused alot of
damage and that was accentuated by your own body armor. You've
suffered a whole host of injuries but basically what it boils down to
is that you have a choice. We can rebuild and we can carry out a
transplant but because of other issues I have to tell you that the
prognosis is poor....possibly depending on a life support system or at
best a relatively short life." She flicked a glance in Scotts
direction. He was looking worried as he studied the sensors. Turning
back to Cortez she said: " There's a new treatment. Its not a
transplant as such but rather a new set of your 'own' lungs.I want
your permission to take that line. I'm sorry to be so blunt but you
have to make a decision."

Richard swallowed. "I don't want to be hooked up to a machine for the
rest of my life, do whatever you think is best", he added rolling his
head back to the side to get perhaps one more glimpse of the pretty
nurse. He gave her a wink, "Don't worry, she's always this
melodramatic", motioning with his head towards Summers.

Natalie smiled to him not caring if he was disrespectful to Unitys CMO
or not. She admired him. {If someone just told me I was dying I
wouldn't be making a joke.} she thought.

Rangi had been watching his face and the expressions that passed
across it and she had seen, or thought she had, a moment, albeit
fleeting, when he had face his own mortality. Scotts voice caused her
to look at him. " Rangi" he'd said to gain her attention and looked
pointedly now at the monitor. She turned back to Cortez. " I want to do
whats best for you." she said.

"I know" Richard said softly, "Because if you mess up I'll come back
and haunt you". He did his best to smile and closed his eyes which
were suddenly becoming very heavy. "Besides" he continued talking,
"You still owe me one, after this we're even.....Or maybe I'll owe you
one...we'll work it out in a few days", he added.

Natalie found herself blinking very fast for it wouldnt do at all to
shed tears over a patient, particularly when he was still alive.

"So be it." Rangi answered, though whether Cortez could hear her or
not she couldnt tell.

In reality Cortez was supremely confident in Summers doctoring
abilities. He'd never seen anyone match her level. If anyone could
save him, she could...not that he would ever tell her that. "Don't
screw up", his voice trailed off before he once again passed out.

"OK, it's not just the fact that I abhor this weapon, which I do in ways you can't possibly imagine," Rick said as he and Trevor Wright had a section of the TechEx open.

"Uh, huh," Wright said annoyingly, wearing a large pair of magnifying glasses that covered half of his head, closely studying the wiring.

"Aren't you concerned in the least that the Romulans, or some other power will develop their own device and, oh ... I don't know ... use it on us."
Wright simply said, "No."

"Why not!"

"I'm just not," Wright said. "Hand me that micro-optic drill."

Rick handed Wright the requested tool.

"You're not worried that someone else will use such a weapon against us?" Rick asked.

"No," Wright answered as a drilled a small section of plating with the most minute of holes.

"Really? Why not?"

"Oh, for heaven sakes, Commander," Wright put down the drill and removed the glasses. "Do you want to know why I'm not concerned?"
Rick crossed his arms and nodded.

"This device is so far ahead of anything the Romulans, or any other race in the known galaxy has, that by the time they figure it out, we'll have the means to counter it."

"You're so sure of that?"

"Yes, I am."

"Oh, I forgot. I'm in the presence of the greatest mind in the history of ... well ... everything. There's no way the Rommies can have a genius on nearly the same level as you."

Wright sighed, "Commander, I'm starting to regret bringing you in on this project."

"Good," Rick replied. "That's been my goal since I arrived here."

"You know, Rick. After word got out on the existence of the Genesis Device, there was a panic that the Klingons, Romulans or someone would soon develop their own version and use it on the Federation. But, as you are well aware, that is not the case. There was also a fear a couple hundred years ago that cloaking technology would allow the Romulans or Klingons to place ships in Earth orbit to attack us at will. That, too, hasn't happened."

Wright grabbed a glass of water and took a long drink.

"Besides myself, you are the only one who knows enough about this device to replicate it. Well, at least you would have a pretty good start. I haven't shown you everything just yet. The plans are not in any computers, nor will they be. When we are finished, Starfleet R&D, Intel, or anyone else will not be permitted access to the device. If we use it, it will go straight to a ship for deployment. If it isn't used, I will have it dismantled right away. But I assure you, what we know, no one else will."

Wright took another sip of water.

"And you know something else ..."

"What?" Rick asked.

"I am more intelligent ... way more intelligent than anyone the Romulans have."

Rick wondered if Wright was being serious. The elder engineer/scientist had been known to be arrogant from time to time. The one thing was for certain was that Wright seems awfully certain of himself.

As Rick wondered about the elder man's words, he caught a smile from Wright.

"OK, enough BS talk," Wright said, putting on his glasses. "Lets get this rewiring done so we can run some dry tests on the device in the morning."

Rick nodded as they went back to work.

Chimerans!

Well, the plot is finally over. Consider everyone back at UNITY for some R&R. Engineering is going to begin working on replacing that port engine we screwed up over in Quorum Space. If your stuck for logs, you can probably help with the logistics of that.
Next week, there's going to be a small awards ceremony. Be prepared. Also, I'll probably be kicking a lot of JLs to some people this week. So watch your inboxes.
The Next plot is going to be OFF-SHIP. We're going to be facing a threat outside of our optimal environment an without our enormous firepower. THink we can handle it? I hope so. Two weeks folks. Make it so.

Administrative news: This week we're dropping Sarasi and Terek due to lack of activity. Terek's been in beta with no logs for at least six months. Sarasi hasn't logged or asked for an excuse in four weeks. If you have more time later guys, we'll be ecstatic to have you back. Until then though, good luck.

Attention Jer and Aurora; you two are on report. If you don't get an excuse letter or a log out by the deadline on Saturday we will be forced to drop you a well. We hope to hear from you two before then.

That is all.

Get logging!

Alpha - Bren

None submitted.

Beta - Rojac

Rojac, Walters, Xerxes and the new Ivanov held a conference in the conference room of all places. Ivanov shared with the gathered a PART o the grim ate that awaits their future - but apparently he was keeping something rather big from them - but why? The conference was cut short when Ivanov caught word that something he was calling a "Romulan War Cruiser" was coming through the gate.
Cortez stammered about in sickbay, and managed to assault poor Doctor Fisher before passing out on the bio-bed again.
On the Chimera's Bridge, Walters and Rojac began the maneuvering to destroy the gate. On the Samson's bridge, Xerxes and Ivanov fired up the main cannon to take on the karaf ship that was coming through. The Rapier and the Klingon contention joined in the fight. In the end, the gate was destroyed and the main objective of Bravo group's mission was completed.
Cropa made an after action Captain's Log summing up Bravo's progress. The ship was on it's way back to UNITY for repairs and R&R.

Unity - Rangi

Rangi told Shane about the three crewmen exhibiting the same symptoms as the Breen hostages and advised quarantining the two ships. Shane was not so sure and said he needed more proof that the outcome would be the same. Research was ongoing and Rangi had no proof to provide, so it was agreed that the Wayfarer and Scavenger be advised to limit contact with other ships and bases.

Jade arranged the first simulation with the help of Louis but experienced the beginnings of a headache. She decided to meditate for a few minutes but began to instruct her first
class.

Change his rank to Sapper?

Engaged in the endless paperwork surrounding the position of
task force commander, Shane found it impossible to fight the
huge workload. All he could do was to retaliate the best he
could and hope not to get buried under all the PADDs,
requests and orders coming his way.

All Russians are optimists!

"Major Walters by this date the world has already started to go
rotten."  Nikolai responded.

Col. Nikolai 'Happy Thoughts' Ivanov

************

Don't think that strategy is in the handbook!

"Starfleet Command will not be as forgiving I fear." Richard said. "I
lead an invasion of a Romulan critical world, and blew it."

MGen. Richard 'Bold Options' Sharpe

Reading things out of context is funny :D

The Major out of energy was in no shape to resist and soon found
himself back in the bed that he had just stumbled out of. Gazing over
at Fisher he realized what he had done.  "I'm sorry" he managed to say
before his eyes began to feel too heavy too hold up and he once again
drifted off into a dreamless sleep.

==============================================
-------------------------
- Subject Lines
-------------------------
Please remember to use the following format for your subject lines:
SD 24YYMM.DD, Duty/Personal Log, Rank Name
e.g., SD 240502.01, CO's Log, Capt Rojac
e.g., SD 240502.01, Personal Log, Cropa Rojac
The [USS Chimera] part of the subject is placed automatically by the listserv, so you don't need to include it.
Also remember to include your details at the end of your log
e.g.,
Captain Cropa Rojac
Commanding Officer
USS Chimera NX 96899-B
-------------------------
- Logging Guidelines
-------------------------
Logging:
The weekly logging deadline is at Midnight (12:00AM/00:00) GMT/UTC (19:00 EST); all logs received after the deadline will be counted for the following week. If you are pressed for time and would like a log to count for the previous week, but it is sent after the deadline, please send an email to the command team when you send the log so that we can make the corrections.
Please remember that all MAJOR plot changes need to be cleared with the command staff before a log goes through! You can do this by sending the command staff (
chimera-command@ucip.org ) a log labeled with "Draft" tagged to the subject line. We'll typically let you know if it's approved within 24 to 48 hours, or tell you what might need to be modified before it's sent to the listserv.
When using other characters in your logs, please keep in mind that person's characteristics. Character information can be found on the UCIP website or the USS Chimera website (under CREW - just click on the Star Trek symbol next to the character's name). If you're still unsure how to interact with a character, then privately mail the person
involved, and I'm sure they'll be willing to help.
Conversely, if you feel that your character is being portrayed incorrectly by someone please contact them to try to work out an agreeable solution. Just keep in mind when logging to treat other characters the way you'd like them to treat you - with the respect due to any member of Starfleet who is a specialist in their field.
If you think your log may be going out of bounds, then please ask! If you are having problems finding things to write about or would just like some help with your log, please contact your department head or the command team. Remember, you don't always have to log about things relating to the main plot - logs that develop your character's
personality are encouraged! We're eager to help if you're having trouble; just email the command team (
chimera-command@ucip.org).

====== CO's ready room, USS Qashqai
=======

Thinking about it, it is rather the usual image of me.
Sitting behind a desk, doing some paperwork or just thinking
about some trouble or another. Today is of no difference as
I am really quite troubled about the recent events.

It all began just recently, when I was invited for a top
important meeting at Starfleet Command on Earth. Not unheard
of, but surely uncommon to call officers from deep space
back to Earth just to attend a meeting. Since there was
hardly time to delay, I took the Qashqai and made it to
Earth with max warp. There were in fact two meeting, but we
get to that later.

The first meeting was a large one, flag officers involved in
the current Romulan war and a bunch of Starfleet Command top
Admirals. The meeting was a lengthy one and more then one HQ
brass had has a speech, but the general outcome was that
Starfleet Command isn't much pleased with the current
situation on the Romulan fronts. Well, there was some truth
in that, Starfleet had to take some embarrassing defeats
lately, but on the other hand, we gained quite a foothold in
Romulan territory with the Quorum space operation. Our
efforts were not much worth in he eyes of the top brass and
the audience was told that the war seems to be drawing
towards a long and exhausting one.

The attention then was drawn upon me and a few other
officers from sectors around SB 234: UNITY. It was presented
that our findings on Padassa station indicated that Romulans
were receiving some sort of support from parallel universe
… possibly more the one. Together with the appearance of
Thalaron cruisers (who are really an formidable weapon)
Starfleet Command came to an conclusion that a new tactical
element was to be introduced soon. We were not told what
that element should be, just informed that wherever
possible, emergency supplies or food, water and basic
resources should be prepared and in special cases our local
forces will be called for support.

"Support what?" I asked and been told that I shall be
informed about everything necessary in due time. That made
me raising en eyebrow, cause I am not used on such blurry
pieces of information, but there was nothing else to do then
to obey and remain silent.

The other meeting was a more casual one, more rich on
information, but far not that pleasant. In the end I left
Earth with the impression that I was talked down. Of course,
it was not done in a bluntly way (cause an Admiral is not
talked down), but the effects were no different. It took
some half en hour to get to the root of the matter and
learned that some HQ Admirals expressed their doubts about
my decision to dismantle a weapon of mass destruction
recently found on the USS Detector in an abandoned shipyard.

I objected that I strictly followed Starfleet regulations
and general objectives. Weapons of mass destruction were
never used by Starfleet … rather the opposite - a lot of
legal documents forebode the use of mass destruction weapons
for whatever cause.

"That just shows how a small frame you do see" I was told by
an elderly Admiral.

At the end of the meeting, I left with the impression that
some devilry is cooking in the Starfleet Command pots,
something like the Pegasus accident decades ago, where
Starfleet Security and Starfleet Intelligence try to employ
a cloaking device when the peace treaty signed with the
romulans explicitly forebode the usage of a cloaking device
on a Starfleet ship (in alpha quadrant). Quite a mess
happened around this accident and it took Admirals Picard
and Riker (Captain and Commander) at that time to cut
through the case.

I am no Picard or Riker and there just was no way how to cut
the case for me. I was just told that under a warrant from
President Spock himself a special operation was running and
that I shall find several agents on UNITY or within SSF
Forces under my command that have been given full authority
to acquire all necessary crew and resources for this
project. Saying it bluntly, there were some guys running up
my station that could ask for everyone and anything and I
was supposed to deliver that to them without a single
question.

I tried to ease the situation with a joke saying that "I am
not giving my pillow to anyone even under the pain of
death", but from all the facial expressions of those old
Admirals, it wasn't taken very well.

So there I am, sitting in my CO's ready room on the way back
to UNITY pondering about the future.

[USS Chimera] Sd 240911.02 SB Unity. Duty Log : Cmdr Summers / MGen Sharpe (Part 1)

"rangi.summers@mojwap.sk" <rangi.summers@mojwap.sk> wrote to chimera@ucip.org:

Part 1 )

*** Main Hospital. SB Unity ***

"This is USS Montgomery to Starbase Unity, we have a
priority one medical emergency, request immediate transport
for one patient straight to sickbay."

In the main hospital the call was passed to the head nurse
Lucy Fleming who immediately alerted the team on call in the
emergency rooms.

Three people materialized into the middle of the hospital
reception area. Doctor Borvan was holding up a sachet of
plasma as his nurse was trying to keep an oxygen mask on the
patient.

"Details" Lucy said, wasting no time on pleasantries.

"This is Major General Richard Sharpe, male, aged 50,
he's bleeding out internally, but we can't isolate the
source. He's not responding to treatment and he's
slipped into cardiac arrest twice prior to beam down."
Doctor Borvan reported.

"Straight to the sensor suite." Lucy directed although the
team needed no second telling. " ..and contact Doctor
Summers." she said to the duty nurse who nodded and put
through the call. Anyone of high rank was routinely seen by
the CMO whether or not in an emergency.

"How long has he been like this?" Lucy asked walking
extremely quickly to keep up with the trolley and the trio
engaged in keeping the patient stable.

"Just shy of an hour." Doctor Borvan said. "He'd recovered
from his
initial
injuries in sickbay, but he broke out of sickbay, then this
happened."

"When were the injuries...how long ago?" Lucy demanded as
they entered the brightly lit suite.

"Coming on eight hours now." The doctor said.

On the count of three, the Generals body was transferred to
the bio bed and immediately a surgical support frame was
lowered across him.
The nurse was back. " The doctor will be here in a few
minutes." she said.

"Good." Borvan said, just as Richard once again went into
cardiac arrest.
"Damnit! He's coding!" Borvan moved towards the General.
"Don't you
dare die
on me you old fart!"

The 'clamshell' support frame had an inbuilt
cardiostimulator and it was this that stabilised Richard
'though it took a few minutes.

"Whats happened?" Rangi asked as she hurried into the room
and Lucy explained about the previous injury, the cardiac
arrests, the internal bleeding and how Richard had
"...broken out of sickbay." glancing at Borvan as she ended.
Rangi looked sharply in his direction. " Broken out of
sickbay?" she asked.

"He was in a state of emotional distress." Borvan said. "He
refused
to
return to bed, despite repeated requests. He kept blaming
himself for the
failure of the mission, so Sergeant Harper took him
somewhere to try and
cheer him up, then a few moments later, called for help, as
the General had
collapsed and was spewing blood from his mouth."

Rangis lips compressed into a line of annoyance for she had
just left her previous patient who was blaming himself for a
failure which in all probability he couldnt have avoided
either.

"Let's see what he's done." Rangi said taking Lucys place at
the side of the bed, her eyes scanning the multitude of
results made possible by the sensor array above them.

Borvan waited patiently for Rangi's assessment of the
General.

"That's it." Rangi said and looked across at Borvan. " Youve
never treated him for a duodenal ulcer?" she asked.

"A duodenal ulcer?" Borvan said, with a look of mild
surprise. "No, we
were
dealing with combat triage, we dealt with what we could see.
We were
remarkably short staffed, so it is conceivable that a common
alement went
unnoticed."

" I take it he never complained of it then?" she said,
already suspecting the answer would be 'no' She had had
dealings with marines before and was of the opinion that the
vast majority of them felt that seeking medical advice was
tantamount to laying down their phasers in the face of the
enemy.

"I'm not his regular physician." Borvan said, narrowing his
eyes. "I
was
just on duty in the recovery room when the General woke up.
His physician is
the MEF Chief Surgeon, Colonel Veronica Fletcher. But no, he
mentioned
nothing about an ulcer, and it wasn't in his file."

"Then he's probably put up with the discomfort...possibly
for some time." Rangi replied. " he could ofcourse have been
self medicating, taking non prescription drugs to ease
things...he wouldnt be the first to do that."

"With all due respect doctor, this speculation isn't helping
to stop the
bleeding." Borvan said, flatly.

"We wouldnt have to speculate if we had up to date medical
histories." Rangi stated and ignoring Borvan, requested Lucy
to prepare the surgical tools she needed.

"You may observe if you wish." she said looking at Borvan
again and accepting the exoscalpel Lucy held ready, waited
only a moment for his reply.

Borvan shrugged. "I've got other patients to deal with. I
assume I can leave
the General in your charge then?"

"Most certainly." Rangi replied and to Lucy added: " Let's
begin."
