[USS Chimera] SD240911.03 ||PROJECT LOS ALAMOS|| Duty Log, Cdr Rick Rodgers and Trevor Wright

=Janus Research Station=
=Janus VI=

"OK, it's not just the fact that I abhor this weapon, which I do in ways you can't possibly imagine," Rick said as he and Trevor Wright had a section of the TechEx open.

"Uh, huh," Wright said annoyingly, wearing a large pair of magnifying glasses that covered half of his head, closely studying the wiring.

"Aren't you concerned in the least that the Romulans, or some other power will develop their own device and, oh ... I don't know ... use it on us."
Wright simply said, "No."

"Why not!"

"I'm just not," Wright said. "Hand me that micro-optic drill."

Rick handed Wright the requested tool.

"You're not worried that someone else will use such a weapon against us?" Rick asked.

"No," Wright answered as a drilled a small section of plating with the most minute of holes.

"Really? Why not?"

"Oh, for heaven sakes, Commander," Wright put down the drill and removed the glasses. "Do you want to know why I'm not concerned?"
Rick crossed his arms and nodded.

"This device is so far ahead of anything the Romulans, or any other race in the known galaxy has, that by the time they figure it out, we'll have the means to counter it."

"You're so sure of that?"

"Yes, I am."

"Oh, I forgot. I'm in the presence of the greatest mind in the history of ... well ... everything. There's no way the Rommies can have a genius on nearly the same level as you."

Wright sighed, "Commander, I'm starting to regret bringing you in on this project."

"Good," Rick replied. "That's been my goal since I arrived here."

"You know, Rick. After word got out on the existence of the Genesis Device, there was a panic that the Klingons, Romulans or someone would soon develop their own version and use it on the Federation. But, as you are well aware, that is not the case. There was also a fear a couple hundred years ago that cloaking technology would allow the Romulans or Klingons to place ships in Earth orbit to attack us at will. That, too, hasn't happened."

Wright grabbed a glass of water and took a long drink.

"Besides myself, you are the only one who knows enough about this device to replicate it. Well, at least you would have a pretty good start. I haven't shown you everything just yet. The plans are not in any computers, nor will they be. When we are finished, Starfleet R&D, Intel, or anyone else will not be permitted access to the device. If we use it, it will go straight to a ship for deployment. If it isn't used, I will have it dismantled right away. But I assure you, what we know, no one else will."

Wright took another sip of water.

"And you know something else ..."

"What?" Rick asked.

"I am more intelligent ... way more intelligent than anyone the Romulans have."

Rick wondered if Wright was being serious. The elder engineer/scientist had been known to be arrogant from time to time. The one thing was for certain was that Wright seems awfully certain of himself.

As Rick wondered about the elder man's words, he caught a smile from Wright.

"OK, enough BS talk," Wright said, putting on his glasses. "Lets get this rewiring done so we can run some dry tests on the device in the morning."

Rick nodded as they went back to work.
