SD 240811.10:
The Chimera was re-called early from R&R and ordered to the Charos system to bring prevent possible Romulan sabotage of the humanitarian aide project at the Erassian Alliance settlement of Charos VI. My crew and I were to rendezvous with Captain Miranda Stewart and the USS Manticore at the Charos System to ward off any acts of sabotage by Romulan aggressors.
My senior officers and I concluded that the best approach to Charos VI would be a subtle one, remaining behind the projection of a modified nebula class vessel from our holo-cloak. The Chimera arrived before her sister-ship, and found the damaged USS McCoy. The McCoy had been attacked by a group of Erassian Terrorists who sabotaged the ship, and killed XO Harbajan Singh. I received orders from Commodore Guzman to protect the USS McCoy while he took the Qashqai out in search of the missing USS Quasar. I would like to note, that I respectfully protested the Commodore's decision to insert himself into such a potentially dangerous situation. His orders, however, were upheld.
An away team led by XO LtCmdr Trzetrzelewska was sent to the USS McCoy to aide in the recovery efforts there. a glowing remark from the McCoy's CEO was sent about Ens Gustav Kroitzer for his performance while aboard. The Manticore soon arrived, and was informed of Guzman's orders to set up a patrol around the McCoy.
Unexpectedly, an explosion occurred in the Main Engineering Section of the Chimera as a result of sabotage. Commander Rodgers was eventually able to get system to stable levels, but the damage was quite extensive. Soon after, 1Lt Xerxes reported the arrival of the Qashqai and 4 decloaking warbirds.
With the damage to the ship's systems, power reserved were extremely depleted. In response, I ordered the execution of a tractor beam maneuver and had 1Lt Xerxes alter the trajectory of one warbird to put it on a collision course with a second vessel. Both ships were destroyed. (A more extensive report of this maneuver will be submitted to the Starfleet Tactical Journal.) Soon the Erassian Second Fleet arrived, sending the Romulans into retreat.
Ens Jardan's speedy investigation into the sabotage effort brought up a discrepancy in the Chimera's Records indicating David F. Martin as the perpetrator. Jardan quickly apprehends the Romulan sleeper agent and holds him in the Brigg. The investigation is on-going while Martin is being held in UNITY's detention facility. Major Varis of J.A.G. has been placed in charge of the investigation.
After the Battle, I called General Ivanov and thanked him for his efforts. Guzman gave me orders to take the ship to SB 234 and repel the attack there. The McCoy away Team was beamed back aboard, and the course was set along with the Manticore. The holo-cloak was disengaged for power reasons, as the impulse drive was already damaged. Captain Chisulo transmitted the attack pattern for execution upon our arrival: the Chimera was to act as a decoy, luring as many Romulan vessels into the gravitational "bottle-neck" between SB 234 and the Aeran system as it could. The Manticore and any ships it could rally together would ambush the Romulans from the other side, who would be sent into confusion by the detonation of a tri-cobalt device from the Chimera.
The tactic worked well enough, but the Romulan numbers were too great. The use of previously inexperienced technologies hindered our abilities as well. The Chimera was hit by what my Science Department calls a "Shield Inversion" device (from what they could tell from the log buoys database.)Shields went down and had to be reset. Romulan assault teams were beamed aboard, and the Security department under MCapt Joeleco performed valiantly int he Chimera's defense. Ensign Tom Jardan was injured in his effort to save the upper decks, but still managed to find his way off the ship following the explosion in the impulse engines. The investigation proved to be inconclusive, but Commander Rodgers suspects that an EPS relay became overloaded, and breached the barrier between the anti-deuterium and deuterium relays, triggering an anti-matter explosion.
With sub-light maneuverability near zero, and power supplies quickly depleting, I made the decision to call for the ship's evacuation. As a last ditch retaliation however, I engaged project "Immolation" to inflict as much damage as possible to the Romulan fleet. The Arrival of Commodore Guzman and the Erassians proved to late for my crew, and our sensors never really registered their arrival. A trajectory was set to the best estimated location of the Romulan's command ship, and warp four was to be engaged at the last possible second. The Chimera would be transformed into an overly large grenade. It was a difficult decision, but I feel that it was a pivotal one in the Battle of SB 234. The Erassian Fleet was sending the Romulan Fleet into a stalwart, but the detonation of the Chimera behind their lines severely weakened their communications structure and could have played a factor in their decision to retreat.
LtCmdr Trzetrzelewska, and the rest of the crew that were able, took the escape pods down to Aeran III's surface. LtJG Dacour and myself made way to the Captain's yacht to ensure the successful completion of the Chimera's final programming. Upon the final transporter sweep of the ailing Chimera, several officers were beamed aboard including 1Lt Jade Reese of the Quasar and Ens Kroitzer. All officers aboard the Bahamut performed excellently in the defense of the Chimera from in-bound Romulan Scorpions, and unknowingly prevented them from loading a computer virus that would disengage the self-destruct protocols. I have since requested 1Lt Reese's transference to the Chimera-C.
The new Chimera-C is currently being completed at the Omega Fleet Yards near SB Bragg. The project was to be part of the Century project, designated as the USS Millennium as a weapons testing platform. The Chimera and Manticore's destruction changed the mission parameters however, and the two testing platforms were redesigned for active service under the command of SSF Deputy Chief of R&D, Commander Bren Ohmsford.
These past six months the crew of the Chimera has been spread out as the New Romulan War has progressed. Cmdr Trzetrzelewska was moved to help set up the sensor outpost project to monitor Romulan border crossings. Acting Lieutenant Pazla dacour was asked to fill in for XO aboard the USS Rapier. LtCmdr Birt was deployed as acting CTAC for the USS Magellan, while Xerxes was placed in charge of developing the Chimera-C's new fighter squadron.
Commander Rick Rodgers has moved to SB Unity as the taskforce Engineering advisor. He recommended Lt. Tobok as his replacement and retaining Ens Kroitzer as the Deputy. MCpt Joeleco 283 made a similar transition to 1TF, and recommended placing Tom Jardan in her place. I acknowledged both decisions. I have reviewed all the logs and records and will be submitting rank and award requests in due time. The officers will be notified at the present locations of the awards. Sadly, because of the war, no ceremony will be possible.
The Chimera is due to arrive and depart for her shakedown cruise in two weeks time. I am anxious to get back aboard a vessel of my own, and engage the Romulans in battle once again. I regret not having the opportunity to head into battle with Captain Chisulo as Khasazi Pass, but I do understand that my duties are here. The Chimera will return.
