=Starbase 234=
Rick had to move the location of the meeting to a larger room when he realized
that the number of engineers who qualified for being present at the meeting
was a lot more than he had expected.
As Rick began to speak, he saw Chloe Utley, the starbase's CEO, who didn't
seem happy having giving up any of her authority on her station.
"I know that a many of you are still in a state of shock … losing your ships,
finding yourselves in the middle of a war … Trust me, I'm not too fond of this
myself. But we have a job to do now, and a big one at that. With all of you,
and the engineers under your commands, I believe we can accomplish this
before the Romulans can regroup.
"This starbase has suffered considerable damage. Commander Utley's people
have already begun repairs. Even so, I will be pulling some people from the
destroyed ships to assist them. We will also be reorganizing things around
here to make this base function more properly. But, repairs to key systems
are our first priority."
Rick noticed that Utley didn't seem to like the idea that her starbase was
disorganized. She kept quiet. He knew that he was going to have to deal with
her sooner or later.
"Another priority is to set up a sensor net along the Romulan border. I'm placing
Tobok and Gustav in charge of this operation. A couple of ships will be made
available for this operation."
He looked over at Gustav and Tobok.
"Many of you will be leaving here to transfer to other assignments or to new ships
being constructed as we speak. But, while you and your people are here, unless
you have been given medical clearance, you will be working. We are at war, after
all. There's no time to rest."
Rick saw the looks in some of their eyes and understood how they felt. He wanted
to be with Mai and Rachel, especially after everything that has happened. Even his
brother's ship was waiting for a new warp core and was still onboard the starbase.
Rick would have liked to spend some time with him. Unfortunately, he didn't have
that luxury. Maybe when they get things up to speed, then perhaps …
"We will also be repairing ships, Federation and Erassian, too damaged to make it to
the nearest shipyards. Kon, I'm placing you in charge of this. Work closely with the
chief engineers of these ships."
Kon nodded.
"OK, we all know what we need to do. Lets make it happen," Rick concluded, not
needing to dismiss anyone. "Gustav, Tobok … stay behind for a moment."
