========== / CSciO's Office \ ==========
Now that the overhauling had been completed Terek finally got a
permanent office. It was not too big. Just the right size, to fit in a
standard issue work desk, large wall screen, personal computer and close
to the viewport a two opposingly faced sofas with the sidetables. He was
just sitting on one of them admiring the scenery. This was the reason
he asked if he could be assigned this office. It was on the outter rim
of the main Unity's core and right in the spot, where the hull was
changing its curvature so the viewport was extralarge covering whole
side wall and even [art of the ceiling. The main docking ring wasn't
far but not blocking the view so he could watch over the inbound and
outbound traffict, while figurring out the great mysteries of
science.... well at least those that still left in this century.
Mostly when he sat and watched, he however thought about Alex trying to
overcome her death. Now was one of those moments. He just sat there,
watching a photo of her in a digital frame having a steaming mug of
dimbula petiagalla on the sidetable. Suddenly he was brought back from
memmories by a chime.
"Yes, come in." he answered and put down the picture. The door opened
and let in a friendli figure.
"Jerom. Hello, good to see you."
Since he arrived on the station he has only seen his half-bajoran friend
only a few times. Jerom was a slightly taller than himself, with short
red hair and beard, dark eyes and friendly smile. He was half bajoran
after his mother, but he only got the dark eyes from her and bit
wrinkled nose, but the rest of the genetic markers came from his father
and that sort of made him center of attention when he arrived somewhere.
It was unusual to see a person who resembled a Bajjoran but with flaming
red hair that in fact no Bajoran has ever had.
"Hi Weranis, sorry to bother you this late, but we have a little problem
in the rad lab."
Terek sighed, this was the only pain in the side he has got left in the
department. Everything else was at the moment fine, but it seemed they
can't get the radiation lab to get working. It was almost like back on
the Chimera.
"Oh Prophets, this radiation lab issue is like a curse. Back on Chimera
it were those high yield particle generators we couldn't get and now not
only the radiation shields aren't working properly."
"Yeah, sorry to disappoint you mate, but there's another bug."
"Come on, you do this on purpose."
Jerom shook his head with appologetic look. His friend really helped him
to move over Alex in those last few months and he was really grateful.
He's been a good friend of his since one Halloween party way back on the
Chimera-A.
"You know I'm not. The Lab is simply remodeled cargo bay and its EPS
grid is a bit weaker than it would normaly be. But still well withing
the requirements. I'm not sure why this is happening, but no worries,
we'll figure it out."
"All right, let's go. I want to see this."
Jerom thought that would do no good for Terek to see the problem, but
after all he was the boss so he just shrugged and led the way. Few
hundred meters of corridors, one turbolift ride and another few meters
of corridors led them to the large cargo bay door.
"Watch out, the overloads are unpredictable." warned him Jroem and
opened the door.
"...ckly, reroute the power!"
"And where the hell am I supposed to reroute it to?! The particle
generator's transformer output is ten times larger than..."
the rest of the heated conversation in the room was unintelligible for
both Jerom and Terek as they were nearly deafened by the loud crack and
blinded by a bolt of bright blue light that sparked between the large
particle emitter at the back of the room and the isolation padd it was
on. The both ducked in a reflect response to the shock.
"HOLY SMOKES WHAT'S HAPPENING IN HERE?!!" shouted Terek probably too
loud cause his ears were still ringing like a jingle bells. The two
technicians in the main control room that hung from the left side of the
ceiling like a large shuttle just looked puzzled at each other and then
just shouted back:
"WHAT?!! WE CAN'T HEAR YOU!!"
Jerom touched Terek;s arm to attract his attention and tried to sign him
that this is going nowhere. Terek nodded and rather walked to the ladder
and climbed to the control room. During the way his hearing got back a
bit although the high pitched noise was still in the background.
"I've said: What are you two doing?!"
"Eh, sir we were just trying to recalibrate the power distribution..."
"By blowing out the particle emitter? Do you even have an idea how hard
is it to get one of those? Let me see the grid."
he moved to the console and tapped a few commands. The hologram appeared
that displayed the layout of the all EPS rellays and conduits directly
affecting the radiation lab. He saw that more than half of them wasnn't
working right now and done his best to keep an anger at bay. Those two
morrons, just probably fried them all and it will take at least another
three days to replace.
"Jerom, do you think that if we use a rellays with higher capacity it
would help?"
He just shook his head: "No, because the grid is not built to handle it.
We have three options. One we move the lab somewhere else. Two, we
rebuild the whole energy distribution system with adjacent power nodes
or three we try to figure out something else."
"Those aren't options. We have to find another way around this. What's
in this section?"
Jerom approached console as well and called up the schematics for the
section of the station.
"Just three storages, one of them empty and currently unoccupied living
quaters. And wait, there is a backup secondary sensory platform built
from on the hull exterior right outside of the cargo bay."
"Are you kidding? You;ve been having a power problems and you haven't
noticed this leech?"
"Well what ca nI say? We didn't have power problem until now."
Suddenly it clicked in for Jerom. "Wait a second... The astrometrics is
still working on the sensory upgrades, aren't they?"
Terek nodded and suuddenly realized where Jerom is heading.
He tapped a few more commands to see the progress of astrometrics and
they read the details for a while.
"Jerom, can you...?"
"Already on it." Terek looked aside to see his friend at the next
console veryfiing the numbers.
"There it is. They use the same frequency band as the power rellays. No
wonder it has been causing the problems. They were interfering with each
other. The power distribution net for the lab might be a bit weaker, but
still it has to be able to hold."
"Great, we'll just need to compromise with the astrometrics about the
frequency band. I'll change ours for the moment, but we need to be sure,
they don't switch it again."
"Just send me the necessary modifications and I'll go and tell Jessica."
replied Terek and headed back to his office. "I'll leave this to your
capable hands here."
