It had been two days since Captain Rojac told Gustav that the new CEO
of the chimera had been assigned when he received an order to report
to Lt Commander Scardona's office on the new Chimera, he had expected
this meeting a bit sooner but Gustav figured his boss wanted to settle
in.

As Gustav came up to the office door he hit the chime button on the
panel next to it.

Scardona was reviewing the latest warp field tests for the new engines
when the chime buzzed through his ears. He checked his chronometer,
surprised to see how fast time had flown by. He pressed a button near
his desk, and then stood up, strolling over to the door of the office.

"Enter, Lieutenant."

The door swooshed open and his new deputy walked in. But before he
could really do anything, Curtis scooted right past him, through the
door of the office and out into Main Engineering. He gestured for the
younger man to follow.

"Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kroitzer. I've heard good things."

Wondering where the commander was going Gustav followed "Really, thank
you Sir" Gustav said.

"It's a pleasure to meet you as well Sir" Kroitzer said trying to keep
up with the senior officer.

Curtis nodded, continuing on a brisk pace through Main Engineering.
When he reached the warp core, he stopped, and leaned on one of the
railings. He waited a few seconds for Kroitzer to reach him and then
stood up a little straighter.

"This ship has over 200 engineers on board, one of the larger, if not
the largest, departments. My job will be to serve as a liaison between
Engineering and the Senior Staff. You, however, will be my 'man on the
ground', so to speak. You'll have a lot of responsibility. Will you be
able to handle it?"

Gustav looked at his new boss and said, "I can but try Sir".

"I'll give you the best I can just like I did with…" Gustav stopped
himself finishing the sentence and then looked down at the metal
grating that was the floor.

Curtis understood the look in the other man's eye. He had lost a ship,
and it haunted him. Curtis could relate. He had lost 12 men when the
Saratoga was destroyed, and it took him a long time to get over it. He
looked Kroitzer right in the eye.

"Don't try, Lieutenant. Trying is overrated. You DO. That's my only
rule. No cop-outs. You won't have time to second-guess yourself. If
you can do that, then you'll be a fine Engineer."

"OK Sir, will do" Gustav said trying not to look back at what had
happened in the not so distant past.

The chief nodded, and proceeded to hand his deputy a series of PADD's.

"Well, best we get to work, isn't it? Run a level 2 diagnostic on the
warp core, to see how the warp field re-calibrations are holding up."

Taking the PADD's from Curtis Gustav said "Aye sir" he then started on
the diagnostic.
