"Excuse me...is the XO around?" Rangi asked. The Yoeman looked up in
surprise, startled by the sudden voice for she had not heard Rangi
enter the room through the already open door. "Yes!" the Yoeman
replied, springing to her feet." I mean...yes ma'am, she is." Rangi
smiled, patiently waiting for the next move. " Well...may i se her?"
she prompted. " Ofcourse...immediatley" the Yoeman answered.

Natalia looked up from reading an Operations report as the door opened
and her new yeoman entered, followed by Commander Summers.
"Commander," she greeted Rangi, surprised. "Please, come in. To what
do I owe the pleasure?" She nodded to the yeoman who then left with
the door closing behind her.

"Good morning." Rangi said."I received some news today that will
interest you. Its from the Cranfield Centre." She saw Natalias
welcoming expression freeze for a moment before a slight blush tinged
her cheeks for a secong or so. "Its concerns Lieutenant Laqkost."
Rangi continued and without being asked, moved to the vacant chair
near natalias desk and sat down, taking her time so that the XO might
regain her composure.

Natalia felt her stomach tighten slightly and sat down again as Rangi
took the chair. Lakqost had been in the back of her mind for a while
now, and she found herself occasionally thinking about him, but then
forced herself to think of other things. When it came to Fr'r'n
Lakqost, she was not the cool calm stategist that made her a part of
the youngest command team in Starfleet.

In fact, she felt like she turned to jelly everytime someone mentioned
his name and was both comforted and unsettled by the fact that her
Halanan heritage played a role in her personal attachment to him.

"Has their been any improvement in his condition?" she asked, looking
up at Rangi and trying to keep her gaze steady.

Rangi replied." Actually I've had two reports. The first came in last
tuesday evening and it was mildly encouraging. I didnt say anything to
you at the time...even though I promised to keep you imformed. That's
because I was hoping for a follow up." She smiled. "That arrived this
morning. He is in recovery..he isnt fully awake yet but all the signs
are extrememly encouraging."

Natalia couldn't help but smile to herself at the news. "That is good
news," she repeated. "I must admit for a while I didn't think he'd
wake up again at all. Do they know yet how bad the damage is?"

"No, not yet." Rangi replied, sorry to temper Natalias obvious
enthusiasm. " You must remember that this is a very early
stage.Sometimes it can take days or weeks...or even months for
patients to regain full conciousness. Even then, their recovery can be
very slow. he will probably need a great deal of therapy. " She looked
at the Natalia, seeing "Its not unknown for patients to have amnesia,
at least in the short term." she added.

"That makes sense," Natalia nodded somberly as she listened to the
news. She couldn't help but feel a sudden pang of guilt at the memory
that he was in his current state because he saved her life. "I assume
he'll be staying at Cranfield for a while still? Or will he be
transferred to another facility?"

"For the time being he will remain where he is." Rangi replied. " The
facilities there are geared for his needs. Later no doubt, he will be
relocated to a rehabilitation unit.By that stage family....and
friends...can be a big help in a patients recovery.." She watched this
information sink in and gave a small smile when natalia looked at her
again.

"He has no family," Natalia replied after a moment. "I'm not sure how
many friends he had either." For a moment, she almost wanted to ask
Rangi if she could petition for guardianship, but the idea was
ridiculous. She was on a starship who, more often than not, was on
silent communication with the rest of the Federation. It would probaby
do more harm than good.

" Mmmmmm." was all the responce that Rangi made before she added more
to herself than to natalia: " That's a shame." Her left hand fingers
tapped absently against her knee as she lapsed into thought. " I
wonder.." she said as though addressing the desk edge, then raising
her eyes to natalia and speaking more loudly she said: " I wonder if
we could put your name as a close friend then. I know it's a bit
presumptious of me to suggest it but it really might help him when he
gets to that point....knowing there is someone concerned i mean."

"I would appreciate that very much," Natalia said eagerly. "I'd like
to help in any way I can."

"Excellent." Rangi said, pleased that Natalia was so keen. " I'll
inform Cranfield and..."

Natalia looked up as the door opened and the yeoman appeared again,
this time followed by two armed marines. "Apologies for the
interruption Commanders, but Commander Summers, could you please come
with us? We have a situation that requires your immediate attention,"
the first marine said in a gruff tone.

"Ofcourse." Rangi got to her feet, frowning, wondering what the
situation was. " Thankyou Commander." she said glancing to Natalia. "
I'll keep in touch."

"Thank you, Commander," Natalia said as Rangi left.
